Catra works at Burger King pt 3
catradora in ther modern party clothes!
AO3
pt1/2
Catra was currently studying in the library, trying to work her way through a math problem.
Her place didn't have internet, so she usually alternated between the school wifi, the public library, and Burger King. Lonnie usually let her study in the break room when the libraries closed up.
Her phone pings with a message, obviously from Adora.
Catra picks up her phone and unlocks it, eyebrow raising when she sees the message.
Adora:
Wyd?
Catra sighs. Of course that airheaded jock texted like a frat boy. As much as she wanted to leave her on read, a deal was a deal.
Catra:
Studying.
Adora:
So diligent! You're so cool, Catra :)
Adora:
I'm weightlifting right now! Gotta work off all those BK calories 💪
Great, maybe she will leave her alone to go do her workout.
Adora:

Catra almost drops her phone when she sees the photo Adora sent. It was a shot of her by the mirror, and she was flexing with a dumbbell. She was wearing a black crop top, which framed her abs perfectly. What was she doing, getting flustered over what, a gym rat photo that looked like it belonged on a Tinder profile? After much gay panic and debate, Catra takes a photo of herself with her middle finger up to the camera. She taps ‘send’ angrily.
Catra:
[image.attachment] 🖕 She doesn't get a response for a few minutes, which was odd. Usually Adora typed back at the speed of lightning.
Ping.
Adora:
wow Ur rlly hot Catra looks at the text, slack jawed. What the hell?
Adora:
Oh my god I am so sorry. That was Glimmer, she took my phone.
Catra could almost scream, but she was in a public library. She settles for furiously chewing her out, sharp nails flying over the keyboard.
Catra:
Plz make Ur excuses more believable. It's so unoriginal I can't even post this on r/OopsDidntMeanTo.
Adora:
I really didn't mean to 🥺
Adora:
I mean
Adora:
Glimmer didn't mean to God, Adora was so stupid. Yet here Catra was, blushing like a fool. When she doesn’t answer for a while, her phone starts pinging again with notifications.
>Adora liked your photo
>Adora liked your status >Adora reacted to your comment >Adora liked your photo
It goes on for another 23 times and Catra scrolls through it, dumbfounded. Unblocking her was a mistake.
----
As promised, Adora would visit her garage when her shifts were over bringing groceries. In exchange Catra would cook, as it seemed like Adora would burn water if she tried.
It started off as a weekly thing, but in a true Adora-like fashion it ended up like this everyday. They would talk for hours, catching up on their lost years together.
Adora talked about all sorts of things, like how hard it was adjusting to the soft beds at first and how she requested a hard one. She told her about the contents of the letters she would send to Catra that never went received. Catra just listened, gratified to hear that Adora missed her in their time apart even half as much as she did.
They would sing the little songs they invented back when they were kids and make up whole new ones as they waited for the food. Adora even started learning how to cook after watching Catra, and she would barge in uninvited with new recipes. The food tasted better with company, and Adora took great pleasure in piling her seconds.
Catra would show her the local dumpster and they would go scavenging for items they needed. She taught her how to repair the things they found using Youtube tutorials, and how to disinfect them. It was fun watching Adora try to haggle for prices at the market, or her face when she realized she had to use the outhouse to go to the bathroom at Catra’s.
Days bleed into months, their easygoing friendship making Catra feel at peace for the first time in forever.
Right now they were currently in their trial exam period, which functioned both as practice for their final exams and half of their final marks. They were sitting in the library, chatting about their future majors.
Catra taps a pencil to her chin. ‘Let me guess, you want to do art. No, art history.’
‘Political science, actually! Did you know Eternia University has the number one ranked Political Science course in the entire country?' Adora says, flipping through the uni coursebook.
'Wao, future leader of the free world huh? That's kinda hot.' Catra teases, while Adora swats her in embarrassment.
'What about you?'
'Double degree of Law and Social Work.' Catra replies. 'Cliche I know. But I just want to be in a position where I can sue the shit out of Shadow Weaver. The system is corrupt, and there's thousands of kids being abused.'
'Wow, you're so cool Catra.' Adora says in awe. 'You're so smart, you'd definitely get in.'
'Damn right.' She scoffs, crossing her arms.
'You're gonna love Eternia. I went to their open day, the campus is gorgeous. Oh my gosh we could dorm together!'
'Gross, who'd want to be your roommate?'
'You would.'
'Ew, you're so full of yourself. Anyway get off me, I have work soon and I need to get changed.'
'Ah yes, the cute Burger King apron. I never get tired of it.'
They would always flirt back and forth like this, but nothing ever came out of it.
With her friendship came the feelings that she had repressed long ago, unknotting and resurfacing like they had never gone at all. However she had no idea if Adora even liked her in that way, given how affectionate she was with Bow and Glimmer. She was popular with boys and girls alike, but she never dated anyone. Catra never dared to ask.
Once Adora had fallen asleep in Catra's bed, and the brunette had woken up to the other girls arm around her and their feet tangled together. It reminded her of when they shared the bed as kids, but now they were grown up and this kind of thing didn't have an innocent meaning anymore. Having her there made her heart race and her palms sweaty.
She had wanted to kiss her then. She wanted to kiss her now. Catra wanted every single morning to end up like that.
--
Adora:
Your birthday is soon! Did you want anything?
You , Catra thinks, like a huge sap.
Catra:
My sanity back.
Adora:
Oh my gosh, we could throw you a party at my place! You’re turning 18 right? We could go out drinking! Angella has this amazing vintage wine collection and I could make cocktails!
Catra receives another wall of text, basically planning the entirety of this birthday party with Bow being the DJ and how Glimmer could make these buns that were to die for. Adora starts going through the entire party guest list until she has to cut in.
Catra:
lol calm down
Adora:
Does this mean Ur on board? 🎉
Catra:
yes fine since you won't shut up about it
Adora:
AAAAAAAH YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ U WILL NOT REGRET THIS
DW I WILL PLAN EVERYTHING <3333
💗💖💖😻
The excessive amount of heart emojis make Catra grin dumbly into her palm.
She's glad they're not video chatting, or Adora would've already taken a screenshot.
---
It’s the day of her 18th birthday, and she’s nearing the end of her shift. The best friend squad were waiting for her at their usual table so they could give her a ride.
‘Hey Catra. Can I speak to you out back?’ Lonnie asks, gesturing outside.
What the heck, did she do something wrong? It’s been pretty peaceful as of late, and Catra tries to remember if she had done anything to Kyle recently. She nods, chucking her apron at the back as she tries not to notice Adora’s eyes following her.
Catra goes out to the back of the store, the night air nipping at her shoulders. Lonnie waits for her there, biting her lip.
‘What’s up? Don’t tell me you’re giving me a raise.’ Catra jokes.
Lonnie looks conflicted, and she takes a big breath.
‘I’m sorry but our store isn’t doing so well. I know you’re turning 18, and that means we can’t afford to keep you on anymore.’
‘What…?’
Catra felt numb, like she wasn’t really there in the back alley with Lonnie. It felt like an out of body experience. She could only stare at her, betrayed.
Like Lonnie could read her mind, she tries to correct herself. ‘It wasn’t my decision, it was Octavia’s.’
Of course it was. Her regional manager was the reason she could never just swipe food while she was working. Octavia never liked her, she always reviewed the security cameras and told her off for goofing around. She must’ve known the door incident was on Catra’s shift, and what really happened despite Adora’s cover up. This ‘layoff’ was just an excuse to get rid of her from a financial standpoint.
‘Thank you for all your hard work over these past 3 years. I know you’re going through a rough time, so we will of course give you a recommendation.’
Catra just nods.
She returns to her shift, robotically going through the motions. Catra doesn’t even say anything sassy when Adora asks for a burger with no patty and no onions and no sauce, only cheese on bread.
The lack of a clever comeback to their gag routine has Adora concerned. ‘Are you okay?’
Of course she wasn’t. How could she be? She was going to have to vacate her garage space, not like she had anywhere to put her furniture in. What the hell was she going to do?
‘I’m fine.’ She says, even though tears were threatening to burn a hole in the back of her eyelids. ‘Just...rough day.’
‘It’s your birthday! The party will cheer you up.’ Bow says brightly. ‘I have the sickest playlist of all time, you're gonna love it.'
'My mum isn’t home so we have free reign over the entire house! Come on girl, let's get you changed!' Glimmer crows, too excited about the party to pick up on Catra's mood. 'Makeover time!!'
The two of them force her into Glimmer's Mercedes, on their way to buy every alcohol imaginable from the bottle shop before they go to her house.
The last thing Catra wanted to do was play dress up or even go to her party, but Adora had planned for so long for this. It would definitely ruin the entire night if she refused to go.
Out of all the times they had hung out, she’s never been to Adora’s house. She leans her head against the window when they drive into the fancy part of town, by the lakeside with the multi-million dollar yachts parked in the water.
That still doesn't prepare Catra for when security lets them in through the black gates to the biggest mansion she’s ever seen. There were fountains, perfectly manicured lawns, a tennis court, and was that a helicopter pad?!
It was incredible, she had only seen this kind of luxury in the movies. So Glimmer was rich , rich. No wonder she was put out that Adora had her 18th birthday at Burger King.
Catra looks at Adora with a dumbfounded expression as the attendants let them in, and the blonde looks almost embarrassed when they have to get into an elevator to go to her room.
Glimmer picks out a hybrid of clothes from her and Adora's closets. The walk-in wardrobe is huge, like a department store full of designer clothes, shoes, jewellery and bags.
Her wardrobe alone is the size of Catra's home. The brunette suddenly understands why Adora cried upon seeing her concrete garage space. Looking at it, she wanted to cry too.
Glimmer sets her down on her huge poster bed as she brings out a checkered crop top, ripped black garter shorts and an expensive looking black leather jacket with a gold trim. While Catra reluctantly gets changed, Glimmer picks out a pair of black strappy heeled boots and a hair straightener to battle the bush on Catra’s head.
She sits still while Glimmer goes to work on her face, bringing out an entire Sephora’s worth of makeup. When Catra looks in the vanity mirror, she almost doesn’t recognize herself. Her eyes were framed with false eyelashes, a swooping cateye, smokey eyeshadow, sharp contour and her lips were now cherry red with bold lipstick. Glimmer applies the finishing touches with silver rings and clip on piercings.
She hears Adora inhale with shock from the staircase in her bedroom.
‘Catra you look incredible !’ She gasps. Adora was wearing this cute backless white dress tied with strings, short enough that it cropped above her knees. She was wearing sparkly wedges to go with it, and her hair was curled instead of her usual ponytail. Her delicate gold sword necklace frames her collarbones.
Catra’s throat goes dry. ‘Uh- You too.’
Glimmer smirks, satisfied with her work. She gets changed into her own outfit, a short purple tulle lace dress with a white fur trim and a cute Gucci clutch to accompany it. The pink haired girl spritzes them all with her various floral and sea spray scented perfumes before they head back downstairs.
‘Wow you guys look amazing!’ Scorpia marvels, and Adora’s friends voice their approval as well.
‘Gosh this place is crazy.’ Scorpia whispers to Catra. ‘Did you see their pool? We should’ve just held the swimming carnival here!’
Catra opens her mouth to tell her how Lonnie had let her go, but Sea Hawk’s booming voice interrupts them.
'I challenge you to the ultimate game of BEER PONG!' Sea Hawk announces, spinning the ball on his fingertips.
Of course this gets everyone's competitive spirit going, and everyone gets into pairs.
After a few drinks Catra has almost forgotten what she was worrying about earlier, too focused on the buzz. Her and Adora demolish the other teams by a landslide with their impeccable aim.
Soon the attendants came out with dinner, and it was lavish with every food you could imagine. Lobster, kobe beef, hor d'oeuvres, beluga caviar, kale, and opulent ice cream were all among the plates of food on the table. They bring out a massive 3 tiered truffle cake, the words 'Happy Birthday' written with an oddly crude drawing of Catra.
'You drew this?' She asks, and Adora nods happily. 'You worked so hard on mine, so.' Catra doesn’t have the heart to tell her that the cake was $7 and the drawing of her forehead was meant as an insult. They sing the birthday song for her, and this time no one brings up the cake cutting tradition.
After dinner they sit outside in the garden around the bonfire Sea Hawk had made. He was drunkenly singing a loud shanty while Bow piled in the wood, fanning the flames. Frosta sips on a mocktail, the only one there who wasn’t old enough to drink yet. The fire flickers and dances, casting shadows around them.
Catra downs a few more cocktails and jello shots as she waits for Mermista to light up some fireworks. Apparently it was illegal, but Mermista just waved her off, telling her that she’ll just pay the penalty fee as Catra’s birthday gift. Sea Hawk really did rub off on her.
When she successfully sets them off they light up the sky in dazzling multicoloured sparks. Adora’s friends whoop with glee, taking photos and videos to commemorate the moment.
Adora's side profile is lit up in the dark, and she looks impossibly beautiful among the backdrop of stars. Longing tears at her chest, Catra wants to hold her hand but her throat feels too tight and she can’t move. The truth was that she knew she had always had feelings for Adora, even back when they were just kids back in the foster home. But like a coward, she could never voice them for fear of Adora leaving her side.
A loud neighing can be heard from the stables in response to the loud booming noises from the fireworks.
'Swifty!' Adora says, standing up. The moment's breaks and Catra reels back her hand. 'Stay here, I'll be right back.'
Her chance disappears, she couldn’t say it after all. She watches her go tend to her horse, feeling stupid.
‘Yoohoo~, want a rematch?’ Sea Hawk calls out from the patio, pouring vodka into tiny glasses.
‘Don’t mind if I do.’ Catra replies. She definitely didn’t know her alcohol tolerance levels yet, so it was the perfect time to take that to the test.
Catra confidently does a whole line of shots, determined to drink herself into unconsciousness. Every time she sees a flash of Lonnie or Adora’s face in her mind, she takes another swig. Everyone is cheering her on, screaming the song ‘Shots’ over and over again, also all drunk out of their minds. Sea Hawk taps out at the 5th drink, and everyone screams at Catra’s flawless victory. Scorpia lifts her into the air to do a victory lap, cheering.
Adora finally makes an appearance, alerted by the sound of Catra's shrieky laughter as Scorpia swings her around.
‘Don’t worry, I can take it from here.’ Her school captain says pulling Catra away from her friend. Scorpia just shrugs and makes her way to the food table. ‘Catra, maybe you should slow down.’ Adora tells the giggling girl in her arms.
‘Noo way.’ She slurs, she was enjoying the feeling too much, the alcohol burning through her body, making her feel lightheaded. The light up disco dancefloor starts to blur into a kaleidoscope of colours.
‘You got some weed?’ Catra asks, seeing Perfuma light a bowl. The taller girl hands her an already rolled up one and Catra snatches it to take a long drag. The smoke hits her lungs and she starts coughing.
‘Oi Perfuma, why did you bring drugs? Angella will kill me!' Adora gripes, trying to wrestle the blunt away from Catra.
‘Aw don't be like that! I made some edibles for you guys to try.’ Perfuma says cheerfully, pointing to the pot brownies.
‘See? Scorpia likes them.’ She gestures at the other girl, who seemed to be currently tripping out of her mind and eating everything on the table.
Catra goes to reach for one, but Adora grabs her by the wrist to lead her back inside. 'Alright, you're done for the night. Everyone say bye!'
‘Byee Catra!’
‘Happy birthday!!’
Adora grabs her by the waist to lead her to her bedroom, Catra wobbling after her in the heels Glimmer lent her.
'Ugh Adoraaa, don't be such a party pooper. I'm fine.' She moans, leaning heavily on the other girl. 'Don't you have a shift tomorrow afternoon? I don't want you getting hungover or drug tested.' Adora chides, rummaging around the dark for the light switch.
Catra snorts. 'Oh you don't have to worry about that anymore. Got laid off.'
Adora looks at her in confusion, until realization dawns on her. 'Wait, is that why Lonnie took you outside?'
'Say, I never got to give you your birthday gift.' Catra pushes her hair back, voice sultry as she flings off her jacket. She never pinned herself down as a horny drunk, but here they were. Catra shoves Adora onto the bed, straddling her. Her golden hair spills over the mattress, soft like spun silk.
'You still want that kiss?' Catra whispers in Adora's now burning red ear. 'My knife touched the bottom.'
Adora's face now resembled a fire truck, mouth gaping in shock.
'C-Catra, I…'
Catra presses their lips together, silencing her. She knows she probably tastes like alcohol and weed right now, but she couldn't care less in the moment. Adora's mouth is still slack jawed from mortification, so she takes the opportunity for tongue. She frowns and moves down to her neck when Adora doesn’t return the kiss.
'Catra, what are you doing-'
Catra bites down on Adora's nape. The blonde underneath her lets out a soft gasp, arching her back. Her gold manicured nails dig into her shoulder.
'Stop, you're not thinking straight-!'
'Sure ain't.' Catra grins, licking a stripe down the base of her neck. Adora’s necklace chain jingles with the movement. There was now an impressive hickey there, blooming violet on her pale skin. She pauses to admire her handiwork.
'This isn't you talking, you'll, you'll regret this in the morning.' Adora stutters. She's shivering, their hands now laced together, silver rings clanking.
'I know. I don't care.' She replies, kissing her again. Adora's teeth nick her lip. The alcohol in her system makes her feel lightheaded, confident. No way would she have managed this sober. Adora tastes better than she does, sweet like blueberry soju. Catra's hands wander down further, pulling the strings to untie the back of her dress-
'Catra stop!' Adora suddenly shouts, striking Catra across the cheek in a deafening slap .
Adora's eyes were blazing, almost teary in the dark. Her breathing was irregular, panting in and out. Catra stills, clutching her cheek. The look in her eyes sobered her immediately.
Adora looks down at her palm, realizing what she just did. 'Sorry for hitting you!' She flounders. 'It's just that, you're only doing this because you’re drunk and upset, right?’
Catra just stares at her before climbing off. Cold realization settles as the fog in her brain clears. 'You're right. Forget it.'
She sits on the edge of the bed, numbly watching Adora hurriedly trying to re-tie the back of her now wrinkled dress. Her lips are stained with Catra’s red lipstick. Adora catches her looking, and she quickly turns away to smooth down her hair with her fingers. 'You've had more than enough to drink tonight. I’ll get you some water to clear your head.’
She gets up to turn on the light switch, and Catra blinks in the harsh light from the chandeliers. ‘Come on, let’s get you sobered up, okay?’ Adora leads her to the kitchen on the same floor, gingerly placing her friend on the slippery bar stool.
The blonde goes to get the chilled jug of infused water from the fridge and pours it into a glass. Adora slides it across the island, and Catra reluctantly takes it. She sips at it, mint and lemon on her tongue. It tasted way better than her hose water.
‘I’ll uh, pick out some groceries for you since we’re here and all.’ Adora says awkwardly into the silence, turning around to rummage through her pantry.
Suddenly Catra is brought back to the whole reason why she was sitting here in this oversized mansion in the first place. Their friendship agreement. The one she had just violated. Catra had never felt more stupid to mistake Adora’s kindness and guilt for actual feelings. She felt like a charity case, waiting to collect food from the soup kitchen.
Of course Adora didn't like her back. She just saw her as someone needing to be saved. The product of survival guilt. Catra wanted to whack her head on the corner of her marbled countertop and not wake up.
Adora takes out a green plastic bag, and starts filling it with everything and anything she can get. Cans, pasta, biscuits, fruits and vegetables. Actually this feeling was more like being one of those poor kids that white girls would pose next to for their Instagram after their trip to Africa. Did Adora have fun, volunteering to slum it up in her place while she returned here? All she ever wanted her entire life was to be Adora’s equal.
Scorpia and Sea Hawk's loud laughter and DJ music can be heard downstairs in the garden, beyond the tall golden trimmed windows. The class difference between them stretched like an unfathomable canyon. Living the classy bougie dream until the clock struck midnight and she was back in her run down garage. Except soon she won’t even have that anymore. Why did Adora have to bring her here? It was almost cruel.
Catra's suddenly overcome with the urge to vomit. She nearly falls off the high chair in her rush to throw up the unholy cocktail of alcohol into the sink. Tears bead in her eyes from the sour taste as she continues to vomit out everything she ate that night. She can feel Adora by her side, patting her back reassuringly.
It was by far the worst birthday she has ever had.
--
The morning of, Catra woke up in Adora’s bed with a splitting headache.
Unfortunately she was not given the gift of amnesia, as she vividly remembered every last excruciating detail about last night.
She spots Adora’s mop of blonde hair under a blanket on the floor, even though there were a billion other free spare rooms to sleep in. Adora was probably too afraid to share the same bed as her now.
Catra’s borrowed crop top digs uncomfortably into her skin, and she angrily flings it off her body. The shorts stick to her like a second skin, smelling of tequila. She grabs her old Burger King uniform and puts it on, though even this didn’t belong to her now.
Adora shifts in her sleep, and Catra lightly steps over her to get to the door. The last thing she wanted was for Adora to wake up.
As soon as she’s out, she runs out to the elevator and bangs frantically on the buttons until it sends her to the bottom floor. The lift opens with a ding and in her haste she almost crashes headfirst into Glimmer.
‘Oh hey! Are you going to work?’ Glimmer greets. She was in her silk pajamas and slippers, holding a glass of orange juice.
‘Uh. Yeah.’ Catra lies, trying her best to look natural.
‘Some party last night huh? Lucky today is a Saturday.’ Glimmer says conversationally, unaware of Catra’s urge to throw her across the room. ‘Hey, what happened to your cheek?’
Catra clutches her face, it still strung from where Adora struck her. ‘Nothing.’
Glimmer raises an eyebrow. ‘Well anyway, did you wanna stick around for breakfast? The cooks made pancakes, bacon, eggs, the whole deal.' She peeks behind Catra. 'Is Adora still not up yet?’
As much as Catra wanted to scream get out of my way she schools her expression to her best customer service smile. ‘Nope she’s still sleeping it off. Anyway I’m gonna be late so I can’t stick around.’
‘Did you need a lift?’ Glimmer asks. It dawns on the brunette she couldn’t exactly run the entire way back home. ‘I’ll ask one of the drivers to take you back so you make it to your shift.’
Catra thanks her lucky stars that Glimmer was still too hungover to drive her. She wouldn’t have been able to dodge her questions if she had.
‘Yes please.’ Catra says, giddy with relief. ‘Thank you.’
‘Ooh and before I forget, Adora told me last night to give you this.’ Glimmer says, grabbing the green bag of groceries off the counter. The shorter girl bundles it into Catra’s arms before she can object.
‘Get home safe.’ She says, waving as the attendant leads her out the door.
Catra looks down at the cans of food in her arms and doesn’t say anything.
------
The days leading up to graduation were painful, to say the least.
They more or less pretend the kiss didn't happen. Adora never brings it up, and neither does Catra.
She would stare at the ceiling, wishing she had never gotten piss drunk at her birthday and kissed her. Adora was right, she did regret it. It was awful, the look on Adora's face when she slapped Catra replays in her mind and nightmares over and over again. It was mortifying.
Adora still messages her every 3 days, and Catra still replies, though her words are empty and devoid of banter. I'm worried about you, she says. I'm fine , Catra always responds.
The brunette continues to humour her to keep the peace, only shutting down when her old job was mentioned. Catra doesn’t allow Adora back into her home again.
Sometimes they study together, but she can't concentrate when Adora wears her glasses. Her heart hurts, so she cradles her cheek and tries not to remember.
The hickey she had branded Adora's neck with had been covered with foundation until it faded away. None of her friends had teased her about it, so she clearly had not told a single soul what had happened.
Catra bites at the scab on her lip from where Adora’s teeth nicked her until it bleeds. She wants to apologize, but the words stick on her tongue and she can't bring herself to talk about that night.
Catra knew Adora was only here by her side to alleviate her guilt. Shame buries itself under her skin every time she's near her, like she was too embarrassed to even exist in the same space as Adora. She wants to disappear.
Exams are hard, and without an internet connection after the library closes at 6pm made it difficult to study. In her heart she knew she wasn't going to come out on top. Her ranking had slipped, she wasn't even at second place anymore. Rent was due at the end of the month, and without her Burger King wage she knew she'll be kicked out sooner than later.
Catra felt stressed and self destructive, and the only thing that kept her from falling off the edge completely was Scorpia. As much as she hated depending on others, she'd much rather her old coworker than Adora.
Her classmates seemed to like this new, muted down version of Catra who didn't argue and just stayed quiet most of the time. Fighting back was too difficult when all she wanted to do was blend into the wallpaper. All they talked about was where they were going for vacation after graduation, and Catra certainly had nothing to contribute to that conversation.
She felt like crying, all the time. It was agony, wanting to burst out into tears randomly while she sat wasting away in the student council room. Despite herself, she missed Burger King, and she just kept getting ghosted or rejected in her other job applications. Sometimes when she really wanted to indulge herself, she'd go cry silently in the school toilet stall.
Glimmer notices the change, and she catches her glaring. 'You don't seem as alive lately. Your eye bags are huge.'
'S'fine.' Catra replies, hiding her hands so she doesn't see how they shake. Honestly Catra couldn't remember the last time she slept.
'Pfft, don't lie to me. Adora's worried about you. You're getting skinnier, and your eyes are always raw. All you do is stare into space.'
Catra bites down on her nails. Of course she knew that. But she's gone through this before, and she'll do it again.
'What happened between you two?’
‘None of your business.’ Catra replies, shuffling her way to the hall.
--
Their graduation ceremony starts off uneventfully. Every student’s parents except Catra’s sit proudly in the audience, eager to watch their kid graduate. One by one they receive their certificate and return to their seats.
Adora and Catra stand side by side onstage, as Adora makes their final speech as School Captain. Through the blinding lights, she sees Angella waving proudly at her adoptive daughter in the crowd.
Catra looks at Adora in the corner of her eye. She must look pathetic, lovesick and pining after someone she couldn’t have.
‘It’s been such an honour serving the entire faculty and students of this school. I couldn’t have done it without my amazing Vice-Captain and all of my prefects. Now I’m proud to hand over my badge to the next School Captain, Frosta.’
They go through the rest of the ceremony like that, each member of the student council handing their badges to their successors.
Soon their Principal comes up to the podium, tapping it once and clearing her throat.
‘Announcing our honor student, and the winner of the scholarship to Eternia University…’ Castaspella says, turning over the sign card.
‘None other than our school captain, Adora!’
Everyone starts clapping, and Adora walks across the stage to shake Castaspella's hand.
Sounded about right. Catra never won against Adora in her entire life. She had already expected this outcome. Like a game of cat and mouse, going over and over for all eternity.
Adora would excel with her elite education and secure a well paying job. Catra would struggle at the bottom indefinitely, never amounting to anything. She never would, if Adora was still there next to her. When the blonde re-entered her life, everything she had been working towards for years just collapsed. Her job, her home, her School Captain status, her chance at the scholarship, her sanity.
She had to be wiped clean. A fresh start.
The flower petals were falling, the streets decorated with a vibrant pink. The other students mill out of the crowd with their parents, chatting excitedly about what was next in their futures. She waits for Adora underneath a tree.
'Congratulations.' Catra says, when she finally spots the other girl in the crowd. Adora pulls away from Angella’s embrace to meet her.
'You deserve this so much more than I do.' Adora says, her voice pained like she didn't just win a full ride to her dream university. 'You should take it.'
'It's in your name, silly.' Catra replies, lightly tapping her with her rolled up certificate.
'Besides, I knew you'd get into Eternia, so I never applied.'
Adora blinks dumbly. '...What? Aren’t we going to the same university?’
She always was a bit slow on the uptake. ‘Only you decided that, stuupid. Say, it's about time we ended this right?'
‘Catra, what are you...'
'Our deal. You don't need to feel guilty anymore or bring me anything.' Catra says, her voice sounding like it didn't belong to her. She rummages in her bag, bringing out Adora's spare varsity jacket that she hadn’t returned. 'Here, take this. Thank you for all the help.'
'What do you mean? You want to stop being friends?' Adora says in disbelief, taking the jacket.
Catra nods. ‘I can’t continue with the arrangement. I hope you understand.’
‘I don’t! Was I the only one who thought we were friends, real ones?’ Adora asks.
‘...That’s right. I never saw you as a friend. You were just a meal ticket to me. Are you happy now?’ Catra snaps back. Shit, that wasn’t what she meant to say. She had planned to end this quickly and painlessly, on a high note. Trust Adora to put up a fight.
Something seems to click in Adora’s brain. ‘Is this about the night of the party?’
‘Figure that out yourself.’ Catra replies, turning to walk away.
Adora grabs onto her arm. ‘Wait! If- if that’s what you want, I’ll give it! Just don't go!'
This dumb blonde really was offering up her body, out of what? A sense of duty? How stupid.
‘Is that right?’ Catra says, walking closer to her. Adora backs up until she is pinned to the tree. They’re face to face now.
‘Can you really do this?’ Catra lifts Adora’s chin by a finger.
Finally it seems to dawn on Adora exactly what Catra wanted. She swallows, biting her lip.
There’s a flicker of hesitation, before Adora’s eyes squeeze shut defiantly. The blonde is shaking like a leaf, her breath coming out in panicked stutters from her pursed lips.
Catra just stares at Adora’s scrunched up face impassively. Her scared reaction was the only confirmation she needed for closure.
She flicks the other girl’s forehead, and her big blue eyes open in confusion. ‘Chill out, I’m not that evil to do it to someone so unwilling.’
Adora blinks, clutching her forehead. ‘Catra?’
Suddenly Angella’s voice cuts through their conversation from the car park. ‘Adora dear, are you done chatting with your friend? We have reservations!'
‘Um, I…’ Her old school captain opens her mouth to say something, but Angella's started to lose her patience. 'Adora, how long are you going to stand there? Glimmer is already waiting for us at the restaurant!'
Catra just smiles tiredly. ‘Take care, dummy.’
She watches Adora being dragged off unwillingly by her adoptive mother to the car.
Catra lets out a sigh. Her phone pings with a message from Scorpia, and she knows it's time to go.
---
By the time Angella releases her from their graduation celebration, Adora can feel that it's already too late.
Adora:
Please, can we talk? Let me fix this
A pop up appears over the screen.
Message Not Sent
This person isn't receiving messages at this time.
Adora sends another message, but they all go undelivered. Catra had blocked her again. Panic spikes through her veins, and she quickly dons on a jacket and grabs her car keys.
She sneaks out that night, down the familiar winding path through the bush that led to Catra's place.
'Catra?' She rolls up the garage door, blinking in the darkness. When her eyes adjusted, she found Catra's old home completely emptied.
All the furniture and items her friend had collected over the years, they were all gone. The little stove where they cooked, the old mattress where they talked late into the night, all vanished like they were never there.
A single green plastic bag remained on the floor untouched, filled to the brim of food.

pt1, pt 2

Catra:
She doesn't get a response for a few minutes, which was odd. Usually Adora typed back at the speed of lightning.
Ping.
Adora:
wow Ur rlly hot
Catra looks at the text, slack jawed.
Adora:
I really didn't mean to 🥺
Adora:
I mean
Adora:
Glimmer didn't mean to
God, Adora was so stupid.

Adora:
Your birthday is soon! Did you want anything?
You, Catra thinks, like a huge sap.
‘What…’
Catra felt numb, like she wasn’t really there in the back alley with Lonnie.
It was incredible, Catra could only walk in a daze with her jaw dropped on their polished marble floors. So Glimmer was rich, rich. No wonder she was put out that Adora had her 18th birthday at Burger King.
Catra looks at Adora with a dumbfounded expression, and the blonde looks almost embarrassed when they have to get into an elevator to go to her room.
‘Catra you look incredible!’ She gasps.
Catra's hands wander down further, pulling the strings to untie the back of her dress-
'Catra stop!' Adora suddenly shouts, striking Catra across the cheek in a deafening slap.
I'm fine, Catra always responds.
She tries to use the Mcdonald's wifi but soon just ordering a water cup wasn't enough for the workers to let her stay. It was a fruitless effort anyway, in her heart she knew she wasn't going to come out on top.

Summery- Bucky returns home after a mission, and makes some slight changes. Soft, Sweet, Flashbacks in italiacs. Written for @star-spangled-man-with-a-plan Stars Follower Celebration. The prompt- “Im never letting you leave this bed again” Thank you @curtisbbq for letting me borrow your idea.
Word Count- 2833

Bucky returned to the compound, dirty, rough around the edges, and just fucken damn glad to be home. What an odd thought, he really start to feel like this was home, YOU were home. The first time since he left for the army way back when, now he had a place to settle down, let himself explore something he had yearned for for a lifetime to most.He was home, he had to admit being able to get used to this.
Following Sam to weapons lock up, he just replaced most of his tactical gear, the weapons, well they were his babies, and all needed to be personally attended to, cleaned before he could in good concious put them in the lock up. Sam slammed the cage door after putting away his Falcon Wings when he looked over at Bucky.
“You know, you might wanna clean up before going up to Y/N, especially your hair man.”
Bucky really didnt know what he was going on about, but reaching up, he could feel the rats nest of tangles that formed, 2 weeks in some remote bum fuck area being shot at would do that. And honestly he was ripe, it probably wouldnt do well for the upcoming reunion between the two of you.
“Trust me, your not any better off.” Bucky retorts back, locking his own cage door, and headed towards the showers.
“The ladies all love me!” Sam called to Buckys retreating back, chuckling in amusement, opting to head back to his own apartment. After the couple weeks they been with each other every waking moment, they both needed a break from one another.
After his shower Bucky stood at the mirror, alone in the facility, and the mess that showed back in his reflection made him wince. Sure the bruises and cuts, not a big deal. He would heal from those fairly quickly. He managed to work out the mess of a knot, It looked just like himself looking back, but he wasnt seeing James “Bucky” Buchanan Barnes, no, he still saw The Winter Soldier, the man with an unknown number of kills under his belt. But he knew... He remembered every single one. The knowledge brought him the greatest grief, it was heavy on his shoulders, even with the vibranium arm holding him up. It made his physical aches pale in comparison,
Nearby his phone gave off your ringtone, and he snapped back out of his thoughts, glancing down to see a picture of you two lighting up the screen, and suddenly that heaviness was gone.
You were playing music on your phone as the two of you walked the compound grounds after a long exhausting day. Honestly Bucky would have been content to crashing on the couch to reruns of Bobs Burgers, you always would giggle during that dumbass show. But you insisted on this first. “Please Bucky, just a quick walk down to the river” He relented, you did ask so nicely. His arm rested lightly around your hip as you would sweep down to pluck a flower and twirl it in your fingers before twisting it into the crown of your head.
“Where the brave are free and lovers soar Come ride with me to the distant shore We won't hesitate to break down the garden gate There's not much time left today Life is a highway I want to ride it all night long...”
You phone sang and you plucked it out, opening the camera as you moved behind him, jumping up on his back, catching Bucky by surprise, his arm shoots behind to help hold you up.
“Smile Barnes!” Resting your chin atop his head, and his eyes rolled up in a exasperated look, the corner of his mouth coming up in a grin at you. You wrapped your legs tighter around his waist and slid down a bit, like a hug from behind, and nuzzled your face against his own.
God Damn He loved you.
You gave him joy
‘Heard your FINALLY are back. See you tonight when I get home. Im gonna blow this popsicle stand early. Picking up chinese. Dont worry, Im going to get that orange chicken extra spicy. Cant wait to see you. Love you Sargent. XOXO’
And ahh, there it was, Home. He thought seeing your message, the way you were all about blowing off the rest of your day to come back, taking care of him picking up his favorite guilty pleasure, and the way you insisted on calling him Sargent, even before the two of you started taking your friendship further. Simply setting his phone down, his gaze lifted back to the mirror, and thats when he decided he wanted to bring Sargent Bucky Barnes back. Collecting a hair clipping kit from the shelf, he got to work.
Waiting for the elevator to bring him up the flights, his hand went to brush through the shortly cropped hair, it was a bit more in style with today, a mess of tufts atop his head, it was different, it would be different for you. You were so used to the longer look and always told him how you loved them. Hell the first time you two started hanging out, you snuck in his room and braided it just for the hell of it much to his horror. How would you react to this? The elevator buzzed open and he went down the hall to your shared apartment, the door locked.
Digging out his keys, they clink against the vibranium of his hand letting him know he had them in his grasp and pulled them out of his jeans pockets, getting the door unlocked, and stepping inside, its all quiet. Usually you had a bit of music playing of some sort in the background. He never knew what it would be, you were set on giving him an education of lyrics and tunes. So far he had no complaints with your choices. Dropping his keys in the bowl you kept as your “Keep all the shit off my kitchen counter” bowl, he went to go see what you were last playing for music. Picking up the ipod you so lovingly cherished, he pressed play. And guess what the song was.
Disney. Lion King to be exact. You had just gotten out of the shower and were singing to Hakuna Matata, and Bucky had been stretched out on the end of the bed, watching you in the steamy bathroom, wriggle your hips as you pull your panties up over your ass “When I was a young warthoooog!” Bucky broke out in laughter right here, pushing himself up to sit and you pulled one of his shirts over your head as you left the bathroom, continuing along with your song, and cupping his face, looking down at him.
“It means no worries For the rest of your days It's our problem-free philosophy Hakuna Matata!”
You wink at him and kiss his forehead, his arm lopes around your hip, drawing you to sit in his lap, kissing in the curve of your shoulder and neck, placing feather light nips and trace of his nose along the softness, inhaling your honeysuckle softness. You trail fingers along his shoulder and nuzzle into him, enjoying the early morning moment, before the day truly started.
“We should adopt that philosophy you know” You say chuckling as your still humming the tune softly, swinging your legs that dangled over Buckys lap. “Means no worries, no worries about us showing up to work on time.” He chuckles against your shoulder and lifts his head to kiss your lips, playing at nipping between tangling of tongues and pulling away. “And have Sam come barging up here demanding to know where my ass was not down training the new recruits? He wouldnt know where to start with this group.” You scoff with a roll of your eyes, and nudge him to fall back, straddling his hips and running hands up his chest. “You think Im scared of the Falcon, bring it Oversized Pigeon.”
Fuck he loved you.
You gave him so much laughter.
Turning it up further, he went to go grab a beer from the fridge and with a twist, he flung the cap into the disposal, taking a drag off it. He never knew he would enjoy these craft beers you insisted on buying cause “There seasonal bits of goodness, let me have my weakness... well one of my weakness” A very obvious salacious wink thrown his way. A lick of his lips cleared any residue on the beer and he was about to check his phone to see if you sent him another message, usually you were good about blowing it up when he heard the door handle click open, and with your usual gusto of chaos, swept in. Your keys missed the bowl, of course. You never actually followed your own rules. And a quick kick sent sneakers flying off your feet. “Bucky Baby, that better be you. If it isnt, im about to whoop ass on whomever it is.”
You come around the corner and dump the bags of chinese on the counter, still not having seen Bucky, but you caught sight of a flash of him over your shoulder, in the living room. You couldnt wait to see your man, it had been so long, and Fuck you just missed him. Tossing everything else down on the counter, hell you were all about breaking rules, especially your own, your turn on the balls of his feet, calling him again “Bucky Barnes, I so- “ Cutting yourself off immediately when you step into the living room and your mouth hangs open a bit in surprise. Self consciously he touches the top of his head.
“You... You cut your hair!” It was said in surprise, pure surprise. Its not like normally something like this would surprise you with a regular person, this was Bucky Barnes, the man who tried to stay as routine as possible for the simple fact it was that he was in complete control of himself, and that is what he was all about. You had never seen him even have the desire to cut his hair, ever.
“You like?” His voice is soft, almost a child like softness to it, and a worried look on his face, like maybe he made a mistake? You give a shake of your head, and that surprise looks fades into an excited one, crossing the room to reach him.
“Baby, fuck I LOVE IT”
You two are driving, no where in particular. You were restless, the hot sunshine weather making you itch to go for a drive, Imagine Buckys surprise when you held up a pair of keys to Tonys Acura Nsx, wiggling brows at him.
“Is that... Starks keys?” Bucky questioned when you tossed them at him, wrapping your arm around his and tugging him along.
“Yup, ssshh, we will bring it back. Were just borrowing it. For the day.”
“You know your starting to remind me of Steve.” He accused as you two entered the garage, and he opened the convertibles door for you, slipping inside.
“Sorry baby, he doesnt borrow rigs this nice. Im a class all my own.” Giving him a smirk, you slammed the door shut and he just shook his head while circling to the drivers side.
Miles away, Bucky is loosening up to your little trip, your flipping the radio to some random station, singing along in that soft voice of yours.
“So baby pull me closer in the backseat of your Rover That I know you can't afford Bite that tattoo on your shoulder Pull the sheets right off the corner Of the mattress that you stole...”
Bucky glanced over at you while you were so lost in the moment, your feet were dangling out the door, you yourself were angled to lean into him, the aviator glasses slid down to the tip of your nose, and with a push of the button, you dropped the top down, your long tresses of hair whipping around you, you slid your hand into his and lifted it to your face, brushing his knuckles along the side of your face, your eyes sparking over the glasses at him. His foot pushed onto the gas, and the the Acura sped up, taking you two anywhere and nowhere at the same time, it didnt matter anymore what the plan was.
Chaos and All, he loved you.
You gave him adventures.
“Do you?” Relief crossing his face and easing the tension he held, your hands immediately brushing into the soft locks of hair, marveling now at how soft they were, sprigs popping in between fingers and you bit your lip, eyes shinning up at him, in a playful manner, you gave a slight tug and stepped in closer to him.
“Bucky, absolutely I do, this is the best surprise ever, even better then when you let me call you Bucky Bear in public.”
He rolled his eyes and snorted, tracing his hand over your hip to grasp your ass. “That was a one time thing, and the barista was clearly uncomfortable writing ‘Y/N’s Bucky Bear; on the cup.” Who is he kidding? He actually loved it and you knew it. You wiggle your nose at him and place a loving kiss on his lips.
“Yet you still allowed it. But why, tell me why the change?”

How you managed to drag him to the museum display once again, he didnt know. But this seemed to be something you loved, the two of you walking quietly around the different exhibits. Reading over the information, and your questions would draw stories out of him that others didnt know, short of Rogers. His gaze would lift to the faces of his howling commando brothers, from a life time ago, and you would tumble into a decent part of his past. No, it wasnt perfect. There were hard memories edging the shadows of his mind, but you only encouraged the better parts, the parts he was proud to tell.
“It was our fifth hydra outpost, and the prisoners they had kept there were the rowdiest bunch. They drank all of us under the table that night in celebration. Short of Steve... poor guy couldnt even catch nothing more then a few minute buzz.”
You shake your head chuckling and wrinkle your nose at the idea. “Well that would suck, cant even get yourself a proper buzz, let alone drunk. I dont know, maybe the serum wasnt worth it.” Moving the two of you to the next display, and he caught a look on your face, and then turned his attention to what you were staring at. A picture of Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes, himself with a piece of his history. “This one here, my favorite display in here. You look so handsome, so proud.” Your head would rest on his shoulder. “But Im gonna be honest, your best picture is the one on my nightstand. They should have that in here.” One of all of you back at the compound, you and Natasha playing video games against him and Steve. in that photo he was laughing at something Natasha had said, a deep laugh, holding onto Steves shoulder as he doubled over.
He looked at the photo, tucking you in close to his side, but remained silent. That one on the wall was a life time ago, but yes, he was proud of who he was before Hydra.
Quietly, He loved you
You gave him Pride.
“It was just time for a change Y/N, time to say goodbye to that part of myself I just... I cant take any of it back, but I can move on from it. Im ready for our memories to be what I see in the mirror.” He confessed, his gaze falling down to look lower then in your eyes, and you, well damned if that man couldnt stir you to your soul.
Your hands cup his face to bring his gaze back up, kissing him fiercely, no hold back, all of it was just poured into this kiss to your Bucky Barnes, he accepted it. His arms pulled you up to wrap your legs around his hips, and a hand snaked up the back of your shirt, pressing the small of your back in flush against him, your chest crushing against his and your arms loped around his neck. Falling back against the couch, you arch up from where you were sitting low on his stomach, running your arms down his chest. “Get comfy Sergeant, Im never letting you leave this bed again.”
His brows lifted as his hands moved to lightly grasp your thighs on either side on his waist. “Baby, you know this is the couch....?”
“Shut up Barnes, we will make it to the bed eventually, now kiss me like you missed me, cause fuck I missed you!”
Always, He loved you
You gave him his Home.

The Happiest Place on Earth (is When We’re Together) Part 2/2
This is technically a late entry for day three of saiou week but since it is legitimately more than four months late, I’m not going to describe it as such. But! It’s a part two of its previous part one-
(In which Shuichi loves everything about Kokichi, from his unbreachable veil of lies, to his annoying, yet somehow unexplainably endearing personality, and everything in between (but he can’t admit it because he thinks Kokichi might be lying about his own feelings towards Shuichi.)
Also, they go to Disney World together! :} :}
Rated T: for crude language and sexual innuendos.)
It’s not the alarm that wakes Shuichi up in the morning…
He’s woken up by a loud, startling, “HAAAAAI-YAAHH!” accompanied by a loud thump, followed by the sensation of pain where his body meets the floor, and then more pain everywhere else as something falls on top of him.
“Uggghh,” a pained moan resonates from above him as a hand pushes him closer to the floor.
Kokichi pushes himself up, still disoriented, and realizes he’s been attacked in his sleep.
He looks up and faces his assailant. “So you think it’s a good idea to disrupt an evil supreme leader’s sleep, huh?” He asks as he gets to his feet, only just realizing Shuichi must’ve been the one to break his fall, since he’s underneath him, and the pain in his own body is concentrated at his stomach where he was kicked instead of anywhere else. “What’s your goal?”
“I should ask you the same thing!” She points at him accusingly. “What were you planning sneaking in our room during the night! Such suspicious behavior is fitting for a degenerate male.”
Shuichi sits up, rubbing his head with a groan. His surroundings tell him that he was pushed off of the bed, blanket and all.
“Nyeh? What time is it?” Himiko raises her head from her pillow, her hair thoroughly tangled from sleep.
Shuichi glances at the digital clock on the night table. “It’s… seven o’clock.”
“Too early,” she mutters before collapsing back on the bed.
Shuichi rubs his eyes and stands to his feet. “We should get ready.”
“First, explain what you were doing in here!” Tenko commands.
“Weeelll, the manager of this resort came by to tell us we had to sleep in this room or they’d kick us all out!” He prattles falsehoods.
Shuichi amends the statement with the truth. “We traded beds with Maki and Kaito.”
Himiko perks up again, “huh? Why would you do that.”
“Miu was trying to fuck Keebo with us in the room!” He exclaims.
“Kokichi, stop lying.” Himiko seems oddly annoyed. It must be because she’s tired.
“Actually, that’s not a lie,” Shuichi assures them.
“What!? Tenko will set them straight!” She proclaims as she swings open the door to the other room and starts scolding them. Shuichi, from his position on the floor, can see Maki packing some knives away into her backpack. He really hopes she doesn’t plan on taking them into the park.
Kokichi shuts the door behind her and the upcoming mayhem, grinning wildly. “Whatcha guys waiting for? We’re going to Disney!”
“Ah...” the detective yawns.
“I wanna go back to sleep…” For her next trick, the magician disappears under the covers.
--
“Hey, that wasn’t too bad. We might not be the first ones on this bus, but we still got seats!” Kaito hits them with some positivity.
Maki’s shockingly awake, and Shuichi never expected she’d be a morning person.
“How the hell do people wake up this early?” Miu asks rhetorically before chugging down a thermos of hot coffee.
Keebo smiles beside her and hands out breakfast snacks that he packed for all of them.
Shuichi takes a granola bar. “Thank you.”
“This doesn’t make up for you’re unforgivable behavior, vermin!” Tenko makes sure he knows that much before grabbing an apple from his hand and furiously wiping it with her shirt before biting it.
Himiko’s sleeping on Tenko’s shoulder, and none of them are convinced she woke up at all to get ready; Tenko carried her to the bus stop, and she hasn’t spoken once.
“Nee-heehee!” Shuichi isn’t sure why Kokichi’s drinking Panta this early, but he is. “Shuichi! Did you download that app I told you about?”
The detective cocks his head to the side, before he remembers. “Ah, yea.”
“Open it up! C’mon.”
So he does; it’s kind of like charades with talking, and there’s a Disney themed category. Kokichi mentioned how it would be a good way to pass time before they visited. He chooses a total of four teams, since there are eight of them, and passes the phone to Kokichi.
“I’m gonna win!”
“Huh?” Kaito looks over.
“We’re all gonna play. Tenko, wake Himiko up or I’ll have Shuichi poison that apple like an evil old lady!”
“I won’t let him!” Tenko fights back.
“I-I wouldn’t do that!” Shuichi waves his hands in front of his face frantically, looking more than a little worried. The outburst, however, does the trick. Himiko slowly blinks her eyes and yawns.
“What is it?”
“We’re gonna play a game, m-kay?” Kokichi grins, showing off his teeth.
“Nyeh, okay.”
“What’re you guys playing?” Miu asks, raising an eyebrow and tucking her thermos away.
“You too! We put it on our forehead and our teammate describes it without saying what it is. If they guess it, tilt the phone down, and tilt up to skip.”
“I don’t trust that you won’t cheat.”
Kokichi sticks out his tongue. “Ugh, fine then, you can go first Harumaki.”
“Don’t call me that.” She glares threateningly as he passes her the phone.
She lifts the phone to her head and the game begins. “Kaito, describe them.”
“Uhhh..” he squints. “Skip that one.”
Keebo opens his mouth to speak, but then he realizes it’s not his turn and keeps quiet.
“Oh! It’s the toy!”
“Hah, I bet you wish it was a sex toy,” Miu remarks.
“Fuck no!” Kaito yells back, before trying to explain. “He’s the space one! To infinity, and beyond!” Kaito puts a fist in the air.
“Buzz Lightyear.”
“Yeah! Oh, that guy’s real strong. He can probably do almost as many push-ups as me.”
“Strong…” Maki furrows her brows. “Hercules.”
“You got it Harumaki. Okay, now this one’s a princess. The one with the yellow dress.”
“Belle.”
“Uhh, this one. Skip it. Okay, another princess. She also wears yellow, I guess…” He scratches his goatee. “Red ribbon, I think, and short hair.”
“Snow White.”
“He’s a duck-”
“Hey! Duck is in the name, degenerate!”
“Oh, fuck, right. Skip.”
“He’s a doll, and he can’t lie. Well, he can lie, um.”
“What..?”
“His nose. It gets longer if he lies. Yeah, that’s it. It’s his nose.”
“Heh.” Miu smirks.
The ex-assassin stares. “I’m skipping.”
“Maki! Oh you know this one-” he begins when there’s a beep.
“Awwww, looks like you’re out of time!” Kokichi grabs the phone and looks at the list of characters. “You guys only got four! Hey Shuichi, put this on your head. We got this.”
“Right!” Shuichi nods, taking the phone and getting ready.
“Mmm, Shumai, you gotta tilt the phone forward a little.”
“Hah-haha! Pooichi can’t even do it right!”
“One, two, three, go! He’s the monkey in Lion King!”
Shuichi thinks for a moment. “Um… Raf-Rafiki?”
“Yup! Girl Mickey rat!”
“Wh- Minnie Mouse?”
Kokichi nods, “Nee-heehee! It’s Miu!”
“Nnnnnnnn,” Miu squirms in her seat.
“Miu? Kokichi, what?”
“Y’know, Miu. In that famous spaghetti scene from that movie with the dogs.”
Shuichi hesitates, “...Tramp?”
“Right-o! Didn’t know you had it in you Shuichi! Skip!”
“O-okay,” Shuichi stutters.
“Hmmm, Na-na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na!” he sings.
“Kokichi…”
“C’mon Shuichi! You can do it. If she doesn’t scare you, then nobody will!” he continues impishly.
“Cruella De Vil...”
“Good job Shumai! Oh! Oh! They’re emo like Shuichi!”
“Kokichi… I already told you I’m not like Eeyore…”
“Nee-heehee, you still got it. His mom was shot!”
“...is this really in a Disney Movie?”
“Yup! Would I lie to you, Shuichi?”
“Yes.”
“He’s a deer!”
“Right, I think I’m gonna skip.”
“Shuiichiii,” Kokichi whines, “you could’ve gotten that one. But skip this one. Hmm, oh, evil lion!”
“Scar!” The detective declares.
“Okay! Last one! Glass shoe!”
“Cinderella.”
“Yeah! Times up! We got seven! I bet no one else can beat that.” He taunts.
“Oh yeah?” Miu challenges, taking the phone and putting it on her head.
The countdown begins. Keebo frowns. “Um, I don’t know that one. Skip. That one either… Who is Scrooge McDuck?”
“You’re not supposed to say it!” Kaito exclaims.
“But who is it?” Himiko asks. All of them, except for a very focused Miu and Keebo, shrug.
“She’s a small fairy!”
“Scrooge McDuck is a small fairy?”
“No, Keebo is describing the character on Miu’s head.”
“Tinker Bell!” Miu slams her free hand down on her lap. “Hah! I’m a fuckin’ genius!”
“Correct! He is a dog.”
“I’m gonna need more than that babe.”
“My apologies! He is friends with a cat, if I remember correctly.”
“C’monn Keebo, hurry up.” Miu urges.
“He has a birthmark shaped like lightning!”
“Harry Potter?”
“Harry Potter is not a dog, nor is he Disney!”
Wh-what? I got it wrong?” Miu seems shocked as she meekly looks away.
Keebo keeps playing, already accustomed to Miu’s random bouts of timidness. “Skip! She is the significant other of Simba. She… when we watched the movie you said she has bedroom eyes...”
“Hah-hahah! Nala. All you had to say for that one was bedroom eyes. That was all I needed.”
“He was raised by animals!”
“Oooh! Gonta! Hah! I totally nailed it!”
“Gonta is not a Disney character.” Keebo asserts.
“He’s not?!” Kokichi gasps like he’s been lied to his whole life.
“He swings on vines!” Keebo stands to his feet and pounds his fists against his chest. “Aaaaaaa-auaa-aaaaaaah!”
Kokichi boos, “Kee-boooooo! Your time ran out.”
“Wait, Gonta isn’t Tarzan?” Himiko tilts her head skeptically.
Miu takes the phone down and looks over the results, the others peering over.
Kokichi laughs, “You idiots! You only got two!”
“Shut up cuck!”
“Ahahahaaha!”
“It’s our turn!” Tenko declares. She hands the phone to Himiko and eagerly waits until the mage holds it against her forehead. The round begins.
“In the morning, Himiko is usually…”
“Sleepy,” she answers correctly.
“Skip! A degenerate male that steals bread!”
“Aladdin!”
“She’s an innocent princess that’s defiled in her sleep!”
“Aurora.”
“Another degenerate, this one tries to trick a girl into leaving her parents forever!”
“Nyeh… Peter Pan.”
“Aha! His name describes him perfectly!”
“Beast.”
“She has long, golden hair!”
“Rapunzel.”
“Skip this one! And this one! She saves China!”
“Mulan.”
“The least menacing of all males!”
“The… hunchback, maybe.”
“His full name!”
“Quasimodo!”
“She’s a beautiful native princess that’s manipulated into betraying her people.”
“Pocahontas.”
“She’s a sea witch that tricks a naive mermaid!”
“Ursula.”
“A degenerate talking dog!”
“...Bolt?”
“No, another one!”
“Nyeh?” Himiko tilts her head.
“He’s friends with vermin!”
“It’s goofy!”
“Yes! Skip, ahhh, Himiko, we’re out of time.”
“Nyeh, we couldn’t have lost with my spell casting helping us.” They all glance at the screen, showing eleven correct.
“How did you do that?!” Keebo is astounded. He can’t seem to wrap his head around the fact that he and Miu were only able to answer two correctly.
Himiko’s smile brightens. “With my magic…”
--
After making their way through the security check...
(Kaito was plucked out of the group to pass through the body scan machine, and complained, “Oh come on! I’m the suspicious one?!”
“Of course!” Tenko remarked.
Shuichi took note that Maki was able to successfully smuggle in her weapons. It was a little disconcerting, but the thought of a possible forthcoming lifetime ban from Disney World was a little more disconcerting.)
(Kokichi also begged the seven of them to rent a stroller to push him around in, but sadly, they did not.)
...They make their way through the crowd toward Tomorrowland.
Shuichi had set up fast passes for them in advance, so they would get to do more things with less waiting. Their first one was for Space Mountain, at Kaito’s request. Himiko and Tenko had mentioned that they are not a fan of big roller coasters, so they opted for a fast pass for Peter Pan’s Flight. It isn’t until later though, so they go on line for the race-track ride as the remaining six of them hurry towards the roller coaster.
Kaito’s expressions display his complete captivation with the theme of the ride, and Shuichi can just tell from that, that this is definitely Kaito’s favorite ride. Keebo is appreciating the decoration too. Kokichi is bouncing with excess energy at just riding rides in general, and all the positivity must be rubbing off on Maki; she’s smiling slightly. Miu’s pretty pumped up and isn’t making any profane jokes for the moment. Shuichi is smiling, but at them all; he’s glad to be there with them all.
The Neo-Aikido Master and the self-proclaimed mage meet up with them soon after to go on another ride in Tomorrowland; Maki’s score on the Buzz Lightyear laser shooting ride surpasses the rest of theirs by far, but Kokichi still manages to get in second place, winning against Tenko by a few points.
“Our next fast pass is for Pirates of the Carribean.” Shuichi reads off of his phone.
“Nyeh? Where is that?” Himiko asks, peering over his shoulder.
“Nee-heehee! I say we go this way until we find it!” Kokichi spins around and stops, pointing his finger in a random direction.
“Kokichi! You’re just going to get us lost again. We should stick to the map!”
“Boooring, Keeboy. Are robots only capable of coming up with predictable ideas?”
“I am not a robot!”
Shuichi looks at the map in Keebo’s hands. “It… says it’s this way.” Shuichi points.
“Good job Shumai! Your navigational skills are almost as good as Rantaro’s!” Kokichi praises gleefully.
“Kokichi! You’re doing the same thing I suggested!”
“Hmmm, nope. Shuichi using the map is waaaay different,” Kokichi lies.
“It’s not different at all!” Kaito disagrees, and Kokichi just laughs.
--
“This ride is about me!” Kokichi claims from his seat beside Shuichi.
“No one cares,” Himiko drawls, leaning against Tenko, half watching the animatronic pirates sing.
“How is this ride about you?!” Keebo challenges.
“Don’t you know Keebo, I live a secret life as a famous pirate! I am the phantom pirate, king of the seas!”
“That’s a lie!” he accuses from the row of seats behind.
“Yup, now be quiet Keeboy! You’re disrupting the other people on the ride!”
“Kokichi, you’re the one who-!”
Kokichi shushes him, grinning. He subtly scoots closer to Shuichi, but Shuichi still notices it and tries to stop himself from blushing.
Shuichi isn’t stupid. He knows it is fairly likely that Kokichi’s interested in him romantically. His blatant proclamations along with some observed involuntary mannerisms have clued him into that much.
However, Shuichi is a detective, which means he can only make deductions; he knows it’s likely that Kokichi likes him, but he’s not sure. He has known Kokichi for years, and if there’s one thing he’s sure of, it’s that Kokichi Oma is a liar. He can’t risk reciprocating these feelings that Kokichi has been projecting, because he knows that it might be a lie, and if it is a lie, then things would get awkward, and awful, and Shuichi is happy just being next to Kokichi. If being close to Kokichi means that he has to shove down his feelings, then so be it.
--
“Fuck it’s hot outside,” Miu states the obvious, fanning herself with her shirt.
Himiko and Tenko approach. “I knew my tracking spell would help us find you guys.”
“Hey,” Kaito greets them, “we’re about to go on the Haunted Mansion.”
“Ooooo, sounds exciting!” Tenko chirps while Himiko nods with a smile.
--
As they get wait to get inside the elevator of the Haunted Mansion ride, Kokichi speaks up, “Hey Kaito, guess what?”
“What?”
“A whole buuuunch of riders actually died on this very ride ten years ago! People say their ghosts haunt the ride and mess with the seats! Workers even claim that some of the decorations aren’t just fake projections, but real ghosts!”
“Wh-wh-what?!” Kaito screeches, clinging to Maki, who returns Kokichi’s claim with a glare.
Miu guffaws, “hah! That’s bullshit.”
“Kokichi, everyone knows you’re lying!” Keebo points at him.
Kaito crosses his arms and avoids eye contact. “...yeah, you’re obviously lying.”
Kokichi grins, “are you sure?”
(Maki starts glaring even more than usual at Kokichi after she finally gets Kaito to stop screaming about the “definitely real” ghosts)
--
They’re strolling through Fantasyland after eating something for lunch.
“Hey,” Kaito walks back from where he was walking ahead with Maki, “we’re about to go on, uh… the teacups.” He points towards the Wonderland-themed ride.
“It’s a mad tea party!” Kokichi grins.
“Me and Keebo are gonna go on Splash Mountain instead.”
“Isn’t the wait for that, two hours?” Shuichi inquires.
“Yeah? So? ...I just wanna get soaked.”
There’s a relative groan of annoyance at the innuendo.
“We’ll meet you guys at Cosmic Ray’s after,” she informs them, remembering the name from Kaito when he was talking about where he could get a burger.
--
“Wheeee! Shuichi, isn’t this fun?”
“Kokichi, could you please slow down?” Shuichi doesn’t mind going fast, but this is… very fast. He’d like to go a little bit slower, at least.
“Hmmm, fine, but only for you, my beloved.” Kokichi smiles wide.
Shuichi’s cheeks turn pink.
“Oh for fuck’s sake.” Kaito groans from beside them. Tenko wanted all the girls to go in one teacup, and since the teacups are two to three per cup, it worked out pretty well… for them.
As soon as they get out from under the hood of the teacup ride, rain starts pouring down.
“Shit,” Kaito mutters.
“Of course you degenerate males wouldn’t come prepared! Luckily, me and Himiko came prepared!” She reaches into the magician’s small backpack and pulls out some rain ponchos.
“Tada!” Himiko proclaims, “eight magic ponchos for all of us.” She hands them out to the group.
“Too bad Miu and Keebo aren’t here to use them.”
“Nee-heehee! Guess they’re getting soaked after all!”
--
Eventually, after some more walking and shopping around, they find solace from the rain at the restaurant Kaito insisted they all go to for dinner. Shuichi remembers him mumbling something about the “full Tomorrowland experience” or whatever that means. It works out alright though, since Kaito gets his burger, and the rest of them get to sit down. It’s still pretty early for dinner, but they plan to make it back to the hotel to rest so they can be back and more awake for the fireworks.
They’ve all got a booth to themselves, which is good because that means no one besides the five of them has to witness Kaito inhaling his burger unless they look his way. It also means no one can hear Tenko when she scolds him for his lack of manners.
“Shuichi! Feed me a fry!”
Shuichi blushes but picks up a fry and lowers it towards Kokichi’s head as it rests in his lap. “Please don’t choke Kokichi.”
“I’m the supreme leader of an evil organization! You think eating while laying down could kill me? No way!” He insists, inching up towards the fried potato.
“If you’re sure…” Shuichi trails off as Kokichi eats the french fry.
He prattles on after chewing, “I’m the king and Shuichi is my servant! Nee-heehee-ouch!”
Kaito snorts, food in his mouth as he asks, “did you just bump your head on the table?”
Kokichi sits up from Shuichi’s lap, rubbing his forehead. “Of course not, I just bypassed an assassination attempt. Because of my invisible helmet, Harumaki’s blow to my head only gave me a teensy headache,” he lies, adding hand gestures to emphasize.
“That’s a lie,” Maki calls him out this time, wiping her mouth with a napkin. “If I were to attempt to take your life, you wouldn’t survive,” she assures him.
“Awwww, does that mean Harumaki doesn’t actually hate me after all?” Kokichi tilts his head, his voice teasing.
“Don’t push it.” Her expression is deadpan.
“Do you want me to feed you a fry, Himiko?” Tenko tilts her head, holding up the offered fry.
“Nyeh… I’m okay.” Himiko bites into her burger.
“Okay!” Tenko smiles. “So how was everyone else’s time while we were gone? Hopefully not getting into too much trouble.”
“Nee-heehee, what else can you expect from an evil leader like me?” His grin broadens. “Keebo screamed like a little kid on the rollercoaster! Too bad you missed it!” Kokichi teases.
“What time is it?” Kaito asks, looking towards Maki as she sips her water.
She reaches into her backpack and checks her phone. “It’s five-ten.”
“Hey fuckers,” Miu greets as she walks up to their table with her tray alongside a very wet and sulking Keebo.
“Miu! You’re shirt’s see-through!” Kaito yells reproachfully.
“Heeeeee!” Miu covers herself. “Well don’t look perv…” she mumbles as she sits down meekly.
“I didn’t know Keeboy was water-proof!” Kokichi changes the subject with faux surprise.
“Kokichi, we have been in the pool at the same time!”
--
They get back into the park around eight-thirty, a little more awake than before.
“Shouldn’t we just go back to the hotel? It’s still raining…”
“Not before the fireworks Keeboy! I wanna see things explode!” Kokichi exclaims.
Keebo and Miu have rain ponchos on now too, not that it’s making much of a difference since they ran from the buses without them.
They all try to navigate through the crowd in front of the castle to find the best place to see the fireworks from as possible. It’s not very full, since it’s still raining, but a decent crowd has decided to stick around.
The rain turns to drizzles as the show begins.
Shuichi looks at Kokichi’s face light up in amazement while watching the firework show and feels warm inside.
--
They go on a few other rides they weren’t able to get to earlier. (One of them is called Astro Orbiter and they ride it mainly for Kaito.)
They’re sort of just roaming around when Miu halts the group in their steps. “I gotta go on jungle cruise. I sorta told Gonta I’d get some pictures of the animals... C’mon Keebo.”
“Okay!” Keebo nods.
For some reason, this prompts Maki and Kaito to converse amongst themselves before approaching Shuichi. “We’re gonna head back. Y’know what they say: early to bed and early to rise.” Kaito pats Shuichi on the back and gives him a wink… for… some reason.
“Ah, okay.”
“Have fun, we’ll see you later…” Maki smiles as they head towards the exit, four remaining.
“Are you tired yet Kokichi?” Shuichi asks.
“Who needs sleep when you can stay up late and wake up early in the morning?”
“...”
“But, I was more tired earlier. Taking a nap with Shuichi made me much more awake! I’m ready to ride more rides!”
Shuichi smiles at that. He doesn’t want the leader to push himself too hard. He’s experienced Kokichi completely shutting down because of a lack of sleep. Shuichi has struggled with insomnia too, but Kokichi isn’t able to sleep in like he can. The other normally wakes up early regardless of when he goes to sleep.
“Let me know if you get tired Shumai! I wouldn’t want my beloved to lie just for my sake. I hate liars, you know.”
Shuichi nods, “I’m alright for now. I think we can stay a little bit longer.”
Himiko then speaks up, “Hey. We’re going to watch Mickey’s Magic Show. Do you wanna come with us?”
“Sounds like fun!” Kokichi grips his hand, racing ahead of the other two. Tenko seems to take that as a personal challenge, so she lifts Himiko for a piggy-back ride and chases them.
--
Himiko pulls a blanket out of her backpack once they get into the waiting room for the show; none of them are sure why or when she brought it but the air-conditioned room is pretty cold and the air outside is beginning to cool down because of the season. At least it stopped raining.
“It’s a cape, because I’m a mage,” she says, but the fleecy crescent moons and clouds on it say differently.
--
Shuichi and Kokichi had already decided they would ride Thunder Mountain next. Well, Kokichi decided, and Shuichi quickly agreed.
Tenko knows Himiko won’t want to ride anything that high up, so she suggests a less intense alternative. “We never got to ride Mine Train Himiko! Do you want to go before the park closes?” Tenko remembers that Himiko wanted to at least try riding Seven Dwarves’ Mine Train.
“Nyeh… but isn’t the wait still really long?”
“It might be, but we can check!”
“Okay. After Mine Train let’s leave right away. My feet hurt, and my MP is too low to cast a health recovery spell.”
Himiko and Tenko set out towards the ride.
And then there were two.
--
The line for Thunder Mountain Railroad isn’t unreasonably long, but it’s definitely not quiet either.
Kokichi has his arms up the whole time, and even though Shuichi is gripping the safety bar for dear life during the sudden turns, his eyes are wide open, and there’s a rush of adrenaline going through him. It’s not an intense roller coaster by any means, but the wind on their faces and the loud crackle of the tracks makes it exciting. After, Kokichi pulls him by the hand towards Adventureland and Shuichi smiles the whole way there.
--
In the last few minutes before the park closes they make it back to Pirates of the Carribean again, for the last ride of the night. Now that it’s just the two of them, it feels somehow different from when they were in a group.
“Shuichi, we need to talk.” The boat has begun to move along its track in the water, the false night sky of the ride seeming so realistic overhead.
Shuichi’s eyes widen. “Ah, what would you like to talk about?”
“Do you like me?”
Eyebrows raise, “of-of course.”
Kokichi rolls his eyes, “C’mon Shuichi. I know you’re not that dense.” He pauses. “What I mean is, how do you feel about me, as more than a friend?”
“O-oh,” Shuichi stammers, feeling his face preheating like an oven.
Kokichi leans forward expectantly. “So?”
“Um… I like you, Kokichi.”
An involuntary smile appears on the leader’s face. “Good, me too.”
Shuichi smiles back.
“So let’s make it official.” Kokichi says, looking ahead instead of into Shuichi’s eyes as he laces their fingers together.
“I’d like that.” Shuichi smiles lovingly as he leans over to press his lips to Kokichi’s cheek.
Even though it’s a little dark in the ride, Shuichi can still see Kokichi’s blush. It’s really cute, he notices, but then Kokichi’s facing him again, and he sees a searching look in those purple eyes that’s even more cute. Shuichi nods, and Kokichi takes the opportunity to grab onto Shuichi’s shirt and pull him closer until their lips meet.
It’s nothing crazy, just a soft press of lips against one another with that yo-ho pirate song echoing in the background, but it makes the two of them feel really warm and giddy. The seriousness of the moment is stopped quickly, since Kokichi can’t help himself from grinning. It sort of stops the kiss, but he can’t help it; he’s suddenly so full of energy, and he just can’t stop smiling. Shuichi opens his eyes and seeing Kokichi makes him smile too. It’s like their cheeks are stuck like that, but neither of them really mind.
As they’re getting off of the ride, Shuichi speaks up, a million little thoughts going through his head, “maybe we shouldn’t say anything to the others yet.”
“Why not? Are you ashamed of me?” Crocodile tears well up in his eyes.
Shuichi shakes his head. “No, I just think that Tenko would be less willing to share a room with us if she knew we are together.”
“Nee-heehee, so devious Shuichi. I think I’m rubbing off on you.”
“Maybe…”
--
(They don’t make it back to the hotel until midnight because of the long bus wait. Himiko texted them to warn them, but by the time they get there the line is already long and they have to wait for two buses to depart before finally getting on the third one. But, as they sit down in the seats and Kokichi falls asleep leaning against Shuichi’s shoulder, he finds that he doesn’t mind too much.)

Frozen--Book 1--Chances
Chapter 2--The Unlucky Prince
_________
Summary
Hans is granted a second chance by a criminal known as the Mystery, someone people have only heard rumors about. How and why the Mystery decided to go out of his way to do this was beyond Hans, and frankly it bothered him. But once the Mystery’s plan goes into action, it’s only a matter of time before something bigger begins to develop.
(AO3 version) (Prologue)
_________
Early the next day in the Southern Isles, a guard walked to a prison cell with a tray of food. He stopped at the end of the hall and turned left to face the prisoner—Hans Westergaard. The green-eyed man sat with his back against the wall, unmoving. His right knee was pulled up, and his right arm was resting on it. His head was tilted at a slight downward angle, and he looked to the floor. His red hair had lost its form and was tangled and messy. His usual princely attire was far from princely, having wears and tears in his clothes and gloves. His once shiny boots were now dull and dirty, and overall, he looked miserable.
The jailor slid the food under the bars. “Such a pity, being unlucky number thirteen and tried with treason. You probably already know that your family is very disappointed in you.”
No response.
The jailor walked off, his footsteps echoing down the hall. At the end of those footfalls, a door slammed shut.
Running his fingers through his hair, Hans tilted his head back and groaned. His eyes shifted down to his food, and he moved his arm to grab something off his tray. Savage squeaking was heard, and rats hungrily skittered to the tray of food, startling Hans and making him stand up and jump back. When the rats left, there was nothing but crumbs. Hans groaned. So much for breakfast. . . .
A small bag was suddenly slipped through the bars of the cell’s window, and the bag landed on the metal bed with a soft thud. Hans turned around to see a navy blue figure at the window hanging by a whip. Startled once again, the ex-prince took a few steps back and reached for his sword. Only, it wasn't on him anymore.
The figure gestured to the bag with his eyes. Not taking his own eyes off the suspended person, Hans reached for the bag and peered into it. And inside were fruits and the occasional bread.
He opened his mouth to say some sort of thanks when he saw no one at the window. Seeing something on his right, he turned his head to see a wanted poster of the—boy?—he had just seen.
Wanted—The Mystery
Thievery, Murder
Looks: navy blue clothing and cloak
Physical features: light jade eyes
Weapons: leather whip, fists
The description was all under a picture of a hooded and masked figure, the only spark of bright color seeming to be the eyes. The reward for capture was $300,000.
Sitting on his hard bed with the bag in hand, Hans began to wonder why a thief and murderer, specifically that one, would go out of his way to give him food when he really could be doing something else. Or maybe he had imagined the person at the window.
Then what would explain the bag he now possessed?
Suddenly he heard voices from down the hall. He went to the farthest corner of his cell and strained his hearing.
“. . . time we end this,” a gruff voice said.
“How many times have I told you? We wait for His Majesty’s orders,” a second voice said, irritated.
“I say the sooner he dies the better it’ll be for everyone. We’ll finally be rid of the troublemaker.”
“I agree, but we have to wait.”
Who are they talking about? Me, or the Mystery? Hans thought.
“Anyways,” the gruff voice continued, “how about that thief whose been wanted for ten years?”
Ten years?!
“Ten you say?” the second voice started. “Bah! I’ve heard of one whose been wanted for fifteen.”
“Oh she’s just a legend in a book,” the gruff voice protested.
“Legend or not she was a murderer with no soul.”
“Well no matter. That murderer they call ‘the Mystery’ was seen in Arendelle last night. Stole some food and killed a man with a single punch. A single punch!”
“I’d like to see what else he can do.”
“I can do that, but better.”
“You did one time. Remember 1834?”
“Oh yes. I almost tore off his head, that rascal.”
Hans put a hand to his throat and swallowed. Suddenly the rest of the pear didn’t seem that great.
“Now you can’t,” the second voice said, a little disappointed.
“Bah. I could—wait did you see that?” The gruff voice sounded suddenly startled.
“See what?”
“Look there! A black blur! Don’t tell me you didn’t see that.”
“You’ve been eating too much—there! I saw it!”
Hans heard someone shift in position.
“You there!” a third voice exclaimed.
“Yes sir!” More shifting in footing.
“A message from His Majesty King William about Hans’s fate.” Hans’s heart stopped beating for a second.
“What of it?”
“He has decided that Hans Westergaard be hanged at noon.”
“Finally!” the gruff voice cheered.
Hans slid down against the wall. He felt like puking up what little breakfast he had. He didn’t want to die, but he also didn’t deserve to live. It was enough they threw him in prison after having him shovel horse manure for who knows how long.
“It’s only eight in the morning, so I suggest you ready the gallows,” the third voice said.
Hans’s stomach went into knots.
Four hours left to live.

Winner’s Curse Prologue
Note: Thanks to @edream93 who gave me the “crazy” suggestion to stop lagging on one of my old fics and do something new and for encouragement in this beginning prologue. This is going to deal with more potential fae problems in Auradon and the villain’s dire living conditions on the Isle. Hope you enjoy.
2 weeks after Cotillion
“Everyone shut up!” Queen Nerissa commanded loudly banging her fist on Queen Grimhilde’s table so that the assembled villains would pipe down about how they were missing their latest soaps or needed at their shops.
She surveyed those present. Each with their own skills and ruthlessness that would be useful when the time came for them to invade Auradon.
At her right, sitting on her throne since she refused to sit at the dinner table with the rest of the villains was Queen Grimhilde, filing her nails.
At the head of the long, dusty, unused dinner table was Dr. Facilier in a heated debate with Ursula next to him. Going over past grudges and insults no doubt. They’d had a complicated history since Ursula’s accidental pregnancy resulting in twins.
Further down the table next to Ursula was Morgain Le Fey conferring with Circe. They were newcomers to the Isle. Just arrived six months ago as part of King Adam’s second crackdown following his spawn’s coronation so neither showed the signs of defeat and neglect in their appearance as other villains had. Both were impeccably dressed, the rot of the Isle had not touched them when it came to physical beauty. Their long black locks were free of tangles and they managed to maintain the velvet robes that they had come with so that the patches and faded material were not visible. And their skin remained perfectly pale and smooth.
Which was more than Queen Nerissa could say for Mother Gothel who sat across from them scowling enviously. She looked reminiscent of a gargoyle with her frizzy hair and wrinkles that were deeply entrenched into her forehead despite her vigorous use of a anti-aging cream that she had found among the Auradonian’s leftovers.
Next to Mother Gothel were three of Agrabah’s formerly most powerful sorcerers, Jafar, his sister, Nasira and Mozenrath. Jafar and Mozenrath had been going at it, arguing over who was more powerful and who humiliated Aladdin more while Nasira sat in the middle of them rubbing her temples at their infantile fighting.
Squished between Dr. Facilier and Mozenrath was Yzma, the former advisor of Emperor Kuzco and formerly a kitten before her banishment to the Isle. She seemed to be praying for a bottle of wine if she had to deal with these people and was mumbling something about cow potions under her breath.
At the other end of the table was Queen La, impatiently tapping her ragged nails on the table. She hadn’t aged so drastically as the others- keeping fit by hunting animals in the Isle’s jungle area allowed her to look almost pretty in her skimpy hyena fur bikini. But age had taken its toll on the immortal Atlantean too, crow’s feet were creasing her angry cyan eyes.
The villains immediately quieted down at Nerissa’s action but still harshly glared at the interruption of their tirades.
Queen Nerissa paid the glares no mind. They were harmless, just delusional blowhards still yakking about their evilness even though none of them had their magic anymore. Or even muscles to punch someone to the ground. They were pathetic, aging mortals griping about their glory days.
Well that was all going to change.
Giving a steely glare back at them, Queen Nerissa looked at each of them in the eye as she began her explanation for why she had brought the 11 of them to Queen Grimhilde’s castle.
“If any of you cared to figure out why I’ve called you here, look around. We all have something in common here. Something that no other villain in this forsaken place possessed.”
“More brains than Gaston?” Yzma suggested, rubbing back the wilted flower attached to her hat. She had a recent confrontation with that lug head when Dr. Facilier made her pick up Zevon from Dragon Hall after Gaston Jr. mummified him with his own leather coat and stuff him in the garbage pile. It was humiliating to have such a louse for a son. And pummeled by an idiot like Gaston’s spawn!
“More evilness.” Jafar half-heartedly guessed, slouching in his seat and rubbing his hungry stomach. He wished he could be back at his shop with some moldy baklava.
Dr. Facilier took a discreet glance around, absentmindedly his useless shadow cards in his hands. “Hmmm” he hummed, his voice transitioning to its infamous velvety tone, “I believe what la reine is implying is that we all had magic.”
“Yes.” Queen Nerissa cut in shortly with a curt nod in the voodoo man’s general direction, “We all had magic before we were sent to this hellhole.” “So what?” Ursula interrupted.
Queen Nerissa tensed, glaring at Ursula until the hefty sea witch rolled her eyes and made a dismissive “continue” motion with one of her tentacles. “King Adam may have stopped us from using magic with his little dome around the Isle, but Maleficent and Ursula’s brats have done something useful. They have broken the barrier twice. They have weakened it enough so we may have a chance to gain some power back.”
It was almost comically that at her last claim, all the villains leaned forward in unison waiting for her to explain.
“I have invited you all here to join my coven. With the barrier weakened, little spurts of magic can come into the Isle and we can practice here, growing and combining our powers until we can break the barrier from within. And from there, we invade Auradon for a glorious, bloody new reign.” Queen Nerissa exclaimed proudly.
The other villains looked toward each other, evil smirks spreading across their faces, minds alight with visions of revenge.
“We can have King Beast grovel at our knees!” Circe gasped. She had been particularly vengeful toward the former king for throwing her on the Isle despite various Auradonian citizens vouching for her to stay in the U.S.A. and that she had reformed.
“And his head decapitated on a ship mast.” Ursula added, protectively touching her stomach where Prince Eric once stabbed her.
The only one not joining in the happy atmosphere was Queen La. The former queen was stonily glaring at Queen Nerissa as if assessing for the best way to rip out her jugular.
“Your coven?” she growled, slicing the excitement to dead silence. The other villains’ happy grins faded away s they realizing the meaning behind that possessive word and Mozenrath and Morgain Le Fey got up, looking ready to fight.
“I meant, my coven as in it was my idea.” Queen Nerissa began to explain.
“I will not work under your coven. I am the Queen of Opar.” Queen La got up, fists clenching as she strode towards her. Mozonroth sat down with a satisfied smirk at the thought of the coming catfight.
“Was queen!” Queen Nerissa cut in but Queen La continued her furious complaints.
“I am Queen. I magicked my own kingdom. I brought rain. I had an army of leopards who when they rebelled, I disintegrate into dust. I fought Tarzan three times and he, not once, was he able to kill me.”
“Just put your soul into a rat body.” Yzma snickered.
Queen Nerissa began backing away to Queen Grimhilde’s throne as Queen La reached throat-grabbing distance, “I was not defeated by a little princess by losing my balance and falling off a building. I will not work under someone who is my inferior!”
Queen Nerissa didn’t bother to defend that she had been stabbed before falling off a building as Queen La’s sharp nails aimed at her face when Queen Grimilde threw a box in between them.
The shoe box clattered to the ground and out scurried a small purple lizard.
“What is that!? Is it poisonous?” Mother Gothel screeched, getting up on the table with Circe and Nasira.
“That’s Maleficent.” Queen Grimhilde answered, shoving between a momentarily shocked Nerissa and La.
“Can we keep this meeting moving along? I need eight hours of beauty sleep a day.” Without a big display, Queen Grimhilde pulled out a vial of bright pink liquid and threw it at the lizard that was running under the table causing several villainesses to screech with uncharacteristic fear. The lizard began to grow and morph into the familiar, formerly petrifying figure of Maleficent.
“So our magic potions can work?” Yzma whispered joyfully.
Flinging her head back so that her horns almost stabbed Dr. Facilier’s hat, Maleficent stretched and cracked her bones before turning to face Queen Grimhilde. “About time!” she huffed and turned her attention to the other villains.
“Scared of a common lizard, no wonder you were defeated by royals. You’re just as soft as them.”
“Hey, I have a right to be scared. Didn’t Nasira’s daughter almost die from some lizard bite last month?” Circe questioned.
“It wasn’t a poisonous lizard, it was just the infection from the bite. Though I think she was being a bit over dramatic about it if you ask me.” Nasira said, “Just because I don’t have medicine to treat a wound doesn’t mean she was “dying” or whatever.”
Maleficent snorted derisively to signal a topic change, “And La, you were defeated by a half-witted gorilla man and his British twat of a wife. Your soul was in a rat’s body before you came here. You don’t have the staff that allowed you to have a kingdom or bring down rain. You don’t have any claim to being someone’s superior....Now as for the coven, it will not be ruled by Nerissa, it will be ruled by-”
“Not you.” Queen Nerissa moved next to Maleficent, away from her safe spot next to the throne. “You’ve been gone for months, Malfi.”
She smirked at Maleficent’s clenched scowl, “You’re no longer the Queen of the Isle and with your daughter turning out to be as big of a goody goody as Aurora I don’t think you have any claim to being the Mistress of all Evil.”
“Exactly.” Queen Grimhilde agreed, glaring at Maleficent to respond, “As a coven, we shall have no ruler. Just a common goal. Bring King Adam to his knees and kill the royals that have foiled our plans and ruined our lives far too many times.”
“How do we know you won’t try to take the power for yourselves?” Jafar challenged.
“How will we know that you won’t?” Queen Grimhilde shot back.
“He’s too weak to be able to do such a thing. He’s nothing without his cobra staff.” Mozonroth said. “Why you-” Jafar reached to strangle him when Morgain Le Fey waved her arms and the two dueling sorcerers split apart with a force pushing them to the walls.
With a satisfied smile Morgain Le Fey confirmed, “We can use some of our former magic. And as the only one here who has been in a coven before, you should know that covens work without a ruler. Just one common goal as Grimhilde said.”
The rest of the villains seemed to begrudgingly accept that explanation so Morgain continued to talk.
“Even without our wands or staffs, we can still use alchemy. Ursula, your powers are derived from the sea right? You don’t need your necklace.”
Ursula nodded, “I would prefer to have my necklace but yeah I can do it.”
“Jafar? Nasira?” She turned to the Agrabahans.
“We can try to go back to the old fashioned magic until we can have our objects back again.” Nasira answered as Jafar got up and shuffled back to his seat, wiping himself of imaginary dust.
“La?”
“Queen La. I’m fine without my staff. I was a High Priestess before I became queen.”
“Mother Gothel?”
“I can use old spells.” Mother Gothel answered.
“Good. Then we can all be useful in this coven.” Morgain said. “The most powerful magic users on the Isle. And soon to be most powerful rulers of Auradon.”
“What about Madam Mim? If we are going to have all the magic users, shouldn’t we include her?” Dr. Facilier questioned.
“A coven either has three people or thirteen people.” Queen Nerissa said, “Besides do you really want to work with that madwoman?”
None of the villains volunteered to continue with that suggestion.
“No leader?” Maleficent hissed through clenched teeth. “You’re saying that we’re all equals.”
“In the coven at least.” Queen Nerissa said, “I was thinking on the Isle...we can be at the top of the food chain. After all, we have powers. The others don’t. They should all bow to us.”
Maleficent smirked, “That would be good.”
“So we’re all in agreement. We work together until we take over Auradon. In the meanwhile, dominate the Isle.” Queen Grimhilde clapped her hands and some of Maleficent’s goblins came in carrying trays with unfermented wine.
When Maleficent looked at her incredulously, Queen Grimhilde just shrugged, “You were gone. So I took them.”
The villains took their seats at the table, and clinked glasses to their coming takeover of Auradon.

Year-In-Fic
How many fics did you write this year? What was your total wordcount? 26 fics, which is a million times better than my nine from last year, so I’m counting it as a win! 59,441 words, so clearly all of those 1-2k fics added up.
Fic Roundup!
1. Piece From a Satyr Play | Star Wars | Reylo | 141 words
Her hair is done up in white ribbons, three enormously lopsided buns trailing down the back of her neck.
2. Wasted Early Sunday Morning | Star Wars | Reylo | 434 words
Her skin is smoother than his, smoother than many of the people that he’s touched in his life, and he aches to touch it now, watching her stretch lazily in the early morning sunlight, spine arching like a cats.
3. Cosmic Love | Stargate Atlantis | Mcshep | 786 words
There’s solid matter under the palm of his hand, a beating pulse, and a heart to go with it. A living person that Rodney thought that they’d lost.
4. can’t help but be wrong in the dark | The Flash | Barry/Julian | 2,942 words
The day that Allen had snarled an insult back in response to one of Julian’s cutting remarks, he’d gone home and fisted his cock furiously, thinking about the slant of Allen’s mouth and how it would look smeared with come. How Allen’s hair would feel, knotted in Julian’s fingers as he fucked his mouth.
5. eat flowers, breathe light | Stargate Atlantis | Mcshep |1585 words
John gives Rodney a dreamy smile, swaying slightly towards him, and says, “You have really beautiful eyes, you know that?”
6. Bifurcation Theory | Teen Wolf | Stiles/Derek/Lydia | 7208 words
Lydia sucks in another shaky breath, trying to think of a polite way to explain that she’s sorry, that this was a mistake, and she didn’t mean to bother him. Just as she’s opening her mouth, Derek sighs gustily, the sound breaking apart with static in her ear. “What’s Stiles done now?” he asks, his tone resigned.
7. Ain’t At Home (Home’s Where I’m Going) | Horizon Zero Dawn | Aloy/Everyone | 6857 words
“Not all comforts are bad,” Vala whispers, and Aloy shudders apart.
8. love, can’t protect you now | Stargate Atlantis | Mcshep | 1635 words
“When they come,” Rodney tells him quietly, “I won’t kill you.”
9. Say You’ll Be There | The Flash | Barry/Iris, Barry/Thawne | 1159 words
Barry swallows, fingers tangling with hers, and says, “Storms make me think of him.”
10. it’s warm, this skin i’m living in | SGA | Rodney/John | 1,170 words
When he is thirty-seven years old, John Sheppard thinks about the universe.
11. it’s good to be in love, it really does suit you | KH | Sora/Riku/Kairi | 1,694 words
“We’ve done dangerous before.” Sora shrugs. “Getting a mortgage was dangerous, but we did it anyway.”
12. a hazy shade of winter | Stranger Things | Steve/Nancy/Jonathan | 1,863 words
In November, they build a tree house.
13. can’t deny your appetite | SGA | Mcshep | 4,031 words
John finds out that there’s a vampire in Atlantis the day after they’ve stepped through the gate.
He finds out that the vampire in question is Rodney McKay four weeks later, when they’re all hunkered down in the yawning shadow of some crumbling ruins and Rodney looks at him, his eyes eerily bright in the darkness, sees the blood on John’s face, and says, “Oh.”
14. caught off guard by you | FFXV | Prompto/Noctis | 1,671 words
“I just got you back,” Prompto says quietly, words muffled into the curve of Noctis’s neck.
15. take me to church | Teen Wolf | Sterek |3,129 words
Derek scoffs. “You want to take me back to Quantico.”
16. how to be eaten by a woman | Star Wars | Reylo | 1,350 words
“So why don’t you do it?” he asks, breathless. His chest is heaving, his mouth open, gasping for breath.
“Do what?” Rey asks, and thinks about biting his mouth.
The corners of his lips tick upwards. Kylo squints at her, half-smiling. “That.”
17. move the stars for no one | SGA/Labyrinth | Mcshep | 3,049 words
“You have no power over me,” Rodney whispers, just to see the way that the Goblin King’s eyes narrow - how he steps closer, until his narrow hips are pressed up against the footboard.
He slouches in towards Rodney, sways toward him, his clever eyes hooded, and smiles like he’s won something. Asks, “You sure about that?”
18. is this love? | SW | Reylo | 4,013 words
“It’s okay,” her brother tells her on their wedding night, lowering himself to sit on the floor beside her, until his nose is level with her shaking knees. When he smiles, he looks like a monster. “You don’t have to love me.”
Then he goes to sleep on the couch, taking only a threadbare pillow from their marriage bed.
19. rise again | SGA/SW/Dishonored | Rey, Emily, and John Sheppard | 952 words
“You’re Emily Kaldwin.” A pause. “You are, aren’t you?”
Emily blows out a loud sigh, giving him an annoyed look, as if he’s to blame for the fact that she’s the most recognizable face in all the Isles. “Might be.”
“Huh,” the girl says, and takes a seat right there on the floor. “I’m Rey.”
20. i hope you’ll be happy, miss tara joan | SGA | Rodney/John, original child character | 360 words
They turn off John’s life support on a Thursday.
21. blue lips, blue veins | Voltron | Keith & Allura | 655 words
“I am not,” he says stubbornly, “kissing you awake.”
22. jewel of the south | Dishonored/Star Wars | Corvo & Rey | 686 words
The girl watches him warily, hunkered down in a nest of blankets in the corner. She’s a squatter, that much is obvious from her thin, patched clothing and the general disrepair of the apartment that Corvo’s found himself in. He blinks around, eyes lighting on a sofa, a desk, a couple rat-gnawed shoes.
“You’re bleeding all over my floor,” she says flatly, her eyes heavy on him.
“I’m bleeding all over your balcony,” he corrects, and wavers hard enough that his other leg gives out from under him. “And I’m mostly sure that it isn’t yours.”
23. when the autumn moon is bright | SGA | Mcshep | 2,881 words
There weren’t, strictly speaking, supposed to be wolves in Atlantis.
24. hard and heavy, dirty and mean | Stranger Things | Steve/Billy | 2,846 words
“Remember,” he whispers in Steve’s ear, his breath hot. “You wanted this.”
25. I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus | SGA | Mcshep | 3,855 words
Rodney can’t see much about the man inside of the Santa costume from where he’s standing, the wig and beard hides what the suit doesn’t, but there’s something in his mannerisms that makes Rodney feel a spark of familiarity. He swallows and is still trying to puzzle it out when the Santa finishes with the little girl and turns their way.
John Sheppard looks back out at Rodney from behind a fuzzy white Santa beard, his eyes widening almost imperceptibly as they shift from Rodney to Charlie and then back again.
Jesus - fucking - Christ.
26. The Yawning Grave | Star Wars | Gen, Possible Reylo | 2,489 words | WIP
does the skywalker choose the path, or the path the skywalker? [or: the sabriel au that no one asked for]
Best story I wrote this year: take me to church, hands down. Coming back to Sterek, after two years away felt like coming home. Stepping back into Stiles and Derek’s world, into their feelings for each other, was an amazing experience. I miss them, and I love them still, and the story that I gave myself the chance to write was dreamy and quiet, and just so entirely conveys the feel that I wanted to achieve this year.
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest. Probably a toss up between is this love?, take me to church, and move the stars for no one. Those were the fics that I felt most at home in, the ones that came easily and quietly, like stepping into a comfy robe.
Okay, NOW your most popular story. hard and heavy, dirty and mean comes in first at 992 kudos, 12,356 hits, and 228 bookmarks. I had the good fortune of posting it right after Stranger Things 2 came out, so it got nearly as much traffic as the fic that I wrote last year for the Stranger Things fandom. It is entirely filthy locker room porn between Steve and the latest asshole to be introduced to the high school, and basically exactly the itch that I needed scratched after watching the season. Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I’m, um. Maybe a little bit put out that I published the first chapter of The Yawning Grave, and it’s only gotten seven kudos. I mean, it’s a prologue, and I made it abundantly clear that I wasn’t sure when the next three chapters would be out, but it was still a little bit of a downer, considering how long I’ve been fretting about the fic itself.
Most fun story to write: jewel of the south was super fun to write, but I tend to have fun with all of my crossover prompts. Imagining Rey in the Dishonored universe (twice!) was great fun, and I would totally do it again. I’m going to pretend that this isn’t tickling the portion of my brain that wants to write a Reylo AU where Rey is the street orphan in Karnaca that Empress Ben Organa runs into when he’s on the run. Don’t think that way, Heather.
Story that could have been better? I think that all of my fics could be better in certain ways, and the day that I don’t feel that way I’ll have gotten too conceited to live. I think the one that bugs me the most is one that I haven’t even published yet. Because I hit a snag with the plot and can’t decide if I feel like going back and changing everything or if there’s a handy work around. If we aren’t counting this one, caught off guard by you was the Prompto/Noctis tragic love story that was supposed to be two or three times as large as it is now, and also feature tent sex.
Story I wrote to fix things: take me to church and Bifurcation Theory. The first I wrote because I received a prompt regarding Derek and Stiles around the time that the first episode of the last season aired. I didn’t watch it, but I did see the scene where Stiles does a literal spit-take upon seeing a shirtless Derek on screen in his FBI class. My brain basically went, ‘huh, they’re gonna fuck it up’ and so I just went for it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s canon.
The second I wrote after I’d reluctantly let myself watch season 6. 6A? Whatever. I was pretty intrigued by the idea of Stiles being taken and forgotten, and I don’t mind Stydia, so I watched it and Bifurcation Theory is basically what I wanted to happen.
Longest completed fic this year: Bifurcation Theory, at 7k. So, you know. Not particularly long at all.
Fandom you enjoyed writing for most this year: I actually had a lot of fun dipping my toes into the Stargate Atlantis fandom this year. The people are all really great, and I wish that I’d been around for the old days. Alas, I was up to my eyeballs in anime and Kingdom Hearts.
Favorite character you wrote this year: Toss up between Lydia and Rodney. I like both of their brains, for - weirdly - a lot of the same reasons. Lydia in Bifurcation Theory felt comfortable. A lot of the fic itself is full of tropes that I love. Angst, road trips, little food places that are entirely based off of cafes that I frequent, two people having sex because they’re pining after a third. And Lydia herself is strong and soft and just. I really like writing girls, and Lydia is one of my favorites.
Rodney is just easy.
Most memorable comment this year: Basically every comment that I got on take me to church? Some people welcomed me back to the fandom, others made comments on exactly what I wanted them to feel about the fic - slow, sleepy, and according to one reviewer, tired, but hopeful. I wanted them to be able to feel the atmosphere of the fic above all else, from the quiet echo of the church to that southern sun shower to the shitty apartment. I even had someone comment on the little town in North Carolina that I used as the setting, so all of them were a delight.
Also, I feel the need to say that @popkin16 has some of the best comments and every time I publish a Mcshep fic I eagerly wait in the hopes of a comment from her. They make me really happy.
Fics you wanted to write but didn’t:
Okay, but I’ve written so little compared to what I’ve wanted to. The Sabriel AU is definitely at the top of this list, though I’m hoping to fix that soon. I have the SGA fic where John is a wraith, the SGA fic where John is dead and Rodney is raising his kid, the Enjolras/Grantaire fic, the roadtrip/beach fic that never got written because I couldn’t figure out if I wanted it to be Voltron, Kingdom Hearts, or SGA, the long ass Dishonored fic that spans all three games and basically centers around the idea that the Outsider, Corvo, and Emily come together as the most dysfunctional family ever, the prompt-fics that I started but never finished, the Beetlejuice AU, the girl Cisco AU, the bodyswapping Reylo fic... and those are just ones that I liked enough to jot a sentence or two down somewhere.
Oddest story: Probably move the stars for no one. I mean... it is a fic where John Sheppard is the goblin king. Though I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus was a little crackier than I usually get. Hardest story to do: Hah, my answer to this question last year was the Sabriel AU. That... is still at least slightly true, though the wraith John AU has been a pain in my ass and isn’t even out yet. Of those that I did actually publish this year, caught off guard by you which gave me so much trouble that I eventually just published it as is. Fortunately, a lot of the fic that I wrote this year were little things that niggled their way into my brain, so they came naturally. I didn’t do any challenges or secret santas or big bangs, so I didn’t have to force myself to write anything. Easiest story to write? Again, a lot of them sort of wrote themselves since they came out of my brain mostly formed already. can’t deny your appetite was probably one of the easiest, as were all of the ones that I’ve already mentioned on here. take me to church was pretty high up there.
Most mining of your own history in one story: take me to church and Bifurcation Theory, probably. For the first one, I spent a lot of time in chuches as a kid, a lot of time in cars, and well, the entirety of my childhood in the south. Stiles’ apartment is also completely based off of my last apartment. Well. The building anyway. I had two other roommates and a lot more furniture in my actual apartment, but the layout is all the same.
The vegan cafe that Lydia and Derek stop at is based off of Cornerstone Cafe in Columbus, right down to the probably-gay teal haired kid and the pretty college girl who checks out Lydia. I’m pretty sure there are other bits I’ve borrowed, but that’s the one that stands out.
Oh! Also, it’s good to be in love, it really does suit you. There’s... a whole lot of domestic mumbo jumbo in that. Also, weed smoking on what is an exact replica of my back porch. Actually, scratch that, upon rereading this I realize that it is also an exact replica of my house, minus the weird clock. The table holding Riku’s moon flowers holds my bougainvillea and a couple of my coffee plants in real life. Mickey-the-cat is not mine, but he is based off of BMO, who is. Looking back on it, I’m actually 100% sure that what inspired this entire fic was coming home from work and watching the fireflies with Nick on our back deck. We have a really dense knot of trees surrounding our backyard, and the fireflies are NUTS in the summer. It’s really gorgeous back there.
Themes, or absence thereof: Atmosphere. Feeling-the-fic. Slow, quiet love and burn-you-up passion. Where did you publish/archive your stories? Ao3, as per usual. Story I haven’t yet written, but intend to: Sigh. Fingers crossed that I’ll get the Sabriel AU out at least. Though this question has reminded me that I wanted to finish the Carmilla AU as well.
Sexiest moment (excerpt): “Did he ever fuck you?”
“Yes,” Derek gasps, a ragged catch to his voice. Her smile grows and then carefully, she crawls off of him, leaving him blinking at her blankly.
“Good,” she whispers, and hitches her knee invitingly. “So you can fuck me how he fucked you.”
He blinks at her and for a moment she thinks that she may have broken him, but then he’s surging into motion, pinning her to the bed, and sliding home in one smooth movement. She gasps, head thrown back against the pillows, and wraps her legs around his waist. They hold like that, both trembling, sweat on their skin and the smell of sex heavy in the air. His lips hover over hers, so close that if either of them moved even an inch they would drag together, his breath hot against her lips. His eyes dart down to her lips before they jerk back up to her eyes.
“Does that mean I should kiss you how he kissed me?” Derek asks, his voice wrecked, and she whimpers, high and desperate.
“Yes,” she breathes, wetting her lips. “Please.”
(or)
“Who else has been touching you like that, Harrington?” Billy whispers, his lips catching on the curve of Steve’s ear. He licks his lips, tongue flicking out like a snake, like he’s tasting Steve. Like he wants to eat him. “Was it your daddy?”
Steve’s heart is pounding, adrenaline singing in his veins. He’s let this go on too long, has all but given Billy the advantage here - Steve's let himself be backed up against the shower, the handle digging into his lower back.
With a sigh, Steve finally opens his eyes and looks at him.
Billy is standing too close, fully clothed and soaked to the bone, his own hair damp from the spray. The only thing he seems to have thought to take off is his jean jacket, which has been flung thoughtlessly at the benches behind them. His shirt is near translucent against his chest. When he sees Steve looking, he grins, touching the purpling bruise that hasn’t quite faded from Steve’s lower lip.
“Now this one I remember giving you,” he remarks, pressing in closer, until his head is under the spray too, tilted towards Steve.
Steve’s breath hitches and he tries to backpedal, going up on his tiptoes when he finds that there’s no more ground to give. The handle digs painfully into his lower back, but he can’t be bothered to care. He gasps as the hand cups his jaw, Billy’s fingers lingering over another bruise before they begin to skitter down the column of his throat.
Billy grins at him and leans down, pressing a strangely gentle kiss to a fist-shaped bruise at the base of his throat.
“You wear them well,” he whispers, lips slick against Steve’s skin.
Crackiest moment (excerpt): “Dinner should be ready around then,” he says with a shrug, and realizes with an abrupt, sinking sensation that Charlie is going to think that he’s inviting Santa Claus to dinner with them. “I’m uh, shit, here.”
His cheeks go ruddy with embarrassment as he rummages through his bag and comes up with an uncapped green pen and a pad of crinkled yellow paper. He quickly scrawls their address across it before tearing it off the pad and shoving it John’s way. Jesus fucking Christ, the entire food court just watched him set up a date with Santa.
“I, um,” Rodney says, becoming increasingly aware of the surge of noise coming from the disgruntled soccer moms waiting in line. He cringes, dragging Charlie down a few steps. “I’ll just see you later. Maybe.”
He trips on the rug once he reaches the landing, but catches himself on a reindeer before he can go sprawling into the nearby fountain. His face is on fire, but when he looks back up, John Sheppard is smiling down at him, fond and horribly, achingly familiar.
Favorite dialogue (excerpt): “Come on,” Stiles says, pushing to his feet. He turns once he’s up and grabs Derek’s hand, yanking him upright before Derek can think to protest. “I’ve got a place.”
Derek looks at him, his nose wrinkling dubiously. “You have a place in Murfreesboro?”
Stiles raises an eyebrow back, refusing to give ground. “I have a place in Virginia. It’s like, a three hour drive, tops. Less if I speed.”
Derek scoffs. “You want to take me back to Quantico.”
“I’m an intern, Derek. Pretty sure they’re not going to go looking for you under my mattress. Come on,” he coaxes, jostling Derek with his elbow. “You know how this works, we’ve done it before. Safest place to be is right under their nose.”
“This is a little bigger than hiding in the closet every once in awhile so your father doesn’t notice that you're harboring a fugitive, Stiles,” Derek tells him. He shuffles backwards, but Stiles follows him, always a little too close. When Stiles refuses to look chastised Derek reaches out and grabs hold of his wrist, stopping him at arm’s length. He swallows. “We aren’t talking about you getting kicked out of your program if they find me. You’ll go to prison.”
Stiles watches him, his eyes dark. Knowing. He takes a pointed step forward, always pushing, and turns his wrist in Derek’s grip. He’s still watching as he threads their fingers together carefully, his palm a dry rasp against Derek’s.
“I know,” he whispers, and leans in to press their mouths together.
(or)
“You have no power over me,” Rodney whispers, just to see the way that the Goblin King’s eyes narrow - how he steps closer, until his narrow hips are pressed up against the footboard. He reaches out, curling long, elegant fingers around the cold metal rungs between them, and though he hisses out low through his teeth when he finds the sting of iron waiting for him, he does not look away.
John is a looming figure in the shadows, a slash of moonlight thrown across his face illuminating the smirk that sits there. He slouches in towards Rodney, sways toward him, his clever eyes hooded, and smiles like he’s won something. Asks, “You sure about that?”
“No,” Rodney admits and pushes himself up. The cracked saucer is in John’s hand, empty. Rodney licks his lips. “Not at all.”
“I love you,” he offers quietly. It’s the only secret he has left.
John cocks his head, letting go of the bars and coming around the side of the bed. He is human enough, save the glint of gold in his collar and the slight sharpness of his teeth. He smells real, and absurdly, Rodney wants to dance with him.
“Nothing is freely given,” John says, but it sounds like a question. There isn’t an apology in his eyes, but Rodney hadn’t expected there to be one. The empty saucer in his hand was proof enough.
Rodney shrugs. “Your rules, not mine.”
Favorite lines (excerpt): It’s raining when they leave the church, a warm downpour that leaves everything smelling of green things and wet earth. The sun is still shining, giving the parking lot a strange, otherworldly air. Stiles squints out into the glare, mashing the button on his key fob until an anonymous black sedan honks back at them, the tail lights flashing red.
Stiles bounds across the parking lot, holding a hand over his head to ward off the rain. A hint of ankle winks back at Derek as he scrambles gracelessly into the driver’s seat. Derek follows at a more sedate pace, swinging by the car that he’d bought for a couple hundred bucks from a local hick’s junkyard. He grabs his bag from the back and the picture of Laura that he’s got pinned under the visor, but leaves the rest to rot in the parking lot. Someone will find it eventually.
When he climbs into the passenger seat he’s uncomfortably damp, but can’t bring himself to be troubled over it. He feels lighter than he has in months. Maybe years.
“What happened to the jeep?” Derek asks, dragging a careless hand across the unfamiliar dashboard. The jeep had reeked of Stiles, of junk food and sweat and a little like the cheap cherry-scented pine tree he had looped over the rear-view mirror. This car still smells new, fake leather and plastic, with the faintest undercurrent of boy.
“Left it with Scott,” Stiles says easily, sliding the key home and turning the ignition. It doesn’t even fight him for it. “It wouldn’t have made the trip.”
That was true enough. Derek watches the parking lot disappear from view, relaxing into his seat more and more as the minutes pass. Derek is tired. It's been days since he's felt safe enough to catch more than a few hours of sleep in his shitty car, head propped uncomfortably against the window. Here, with Stiles next to him, Derek’s body is finally beginning to cave in to the need for sleep.
He makes himself stay awake for awhile, long enough for Stiles to flick the radio over to some generic top 40’s station. He keeps it quiet, occasionally mouthing along to the words, but never once getting loud enough to be offensive. The third time that Derek jerks himself out of a light doze, Stiles turns to him incredulously and says, “For god’s sake, just go to sleep. I knew what I was signing up for when I saw those bags under your eyes.”

The first time that Rey sees her brother practice the art, she is being fitted for her wedding dress.
He is not strictly speaking supposed to be in the room with them, but none of the servants have quite worked out how to tell him to leave, and Rey doesn’t care one way or another herself. From her understanding, seeing the bride before the wedding makes for a bad match. It brings misfortune on the future household. Bad crops. Dead cattle. Some tales even say that it leads to an empty womb.
Let them be unlucky, Rey thinks with a sniff.
Her brother is reading, half-reclined on the settee to the left of the door, his leg crossed at the knee. It’s been well over an hour since he’s moved to do anything more strenuous than turn a page. Whatever lies within the book's pages has captivated him thoroughly, his mouth having gone ever so slightly slack as he mouths words to himself, black eyes intent.
The sun is beginning to set, the room growing long with shadows around them.
Rey is watching him when her brother flicks his wrist lazily, still absorbed in his book, and calls a ribbon of scarlet flame to the palm of his hand. It winds itself lovingly between his fingers, circling around and around his wrists, like some lazy beast.
Startled, Rey’s breath catches in her chest. Blinking, her brother looks up, catching her eye over the flame, the red glow casting him in a devilish light.
He cocks his head, and she wonders at his expression, the curiosity there as he unravels the flame outward, letting it find the wicks of the fat, ivory candles on the desk next to him. He quirks an eyebrow at her.
The room is still half in darkness, the last of the fading sunlight leaving them.
Rey licks her lips and steels her expression, flexing her fingers nervously before she raises her hands and cups them together. She doesn’t look away from him as she calls on her oldest friend, the familiar blue flame licking first over her knuckles and wrists, teasing, before it settles between her palms. She lights the rest of the room like that, and doesn’t pay any attention to the way the seamstress is fretting about Rey scorching the sleeves.
Her brother’s eyes are dark and intent on her, his book forgotten.

Rodney’s mark started out small, elegant slashes of color splashed across the meatiest part of his bicep. At the time, Rodney was six years old and didn’t much care for the idea of soulmates. There were cooler things than a bunch of blue paint on his arm, like black holes and the crowded, complicated mess of wiring inside his dad’s alarm clock. He’s going on nine when his mark changes, the familiar blues and greens and whites of sea and foam now a backdrop for the gleaming ferris wheel laid over top the waves, black lines on cool colors. He stares at it, lips pursed, and can’t for the life of him decide if he actually likes the new addition. When he’s thirteen the dark silhouette of a sleek, dangerous looking airplane is added to the mess. The plane itself is larger than the waves, larger than the ferris wheel, so long that the tip of it’s pointed nose touches the inside of his elbow. He grimaces at it, touching the curve of its broad back with one finger. It takes an hour of hunting through books at the library before he recognizes the shape of the SR-71 “Blackbird.” By the time Rodney’s fifteen, two more things have been added - a horse made out of shadows and edges, indistinct black smoke licking up the insides of his forearms and the mandelbrot set that sits neatly underneath it, an expanse of beautiful lines and inky dark that go clear down to his wrist. At fifteen years old, Rodney is significantly more interested in his soulmate than he was when he was six years old. He’s moved to America and is the top of his class at one of the most prestigious colleges in North America. He doesn’t like the majority of his peers and is beginning to realize that it’s entirely possible that he just doesn’t like people in general. He’s prickly, bad-tempered, and his ego has swelled to be the size of a small city. Whoever his soulmate is, she apparently likes the ocean, ferris wheels, planes, horses, and math. Rodney, who enjoys exactly one of those things, doesn’t have very high hopes.
Fic goals: I’m going to carefully not say anything about finishing the Sabriel AU, because that way lies madness. Instead I will say that in 2018 I would like to a) write something novel-length, b) write something original, and c) focus more on original characters. ....Additional goal: write over 60k.

you were made to suffer
Prologue, Ch. 1, Ch. 2
Chapter 3: The Daemon
When Melody awoke, she was in a place she didn't know. The room was sleek and modern, a floor to ceiling window constituting one entire wall, giving her a breathtaking view of Insomnia. Or it would have been, if the night were a normal one, if the stars were out, if the lights of the city still burned brightly. If the city hadn't become a war zone several months previously.
Don't panic.
She sat up from the soft mattress beneath her, placed her feet on the plush silver carpet. Her dark hair spilled down her shoulders, and that perturbed her. She'd definitely had it pulled up in a ponytail before, as she always did when she was on a hunt or expected to run into daemons. Her boots and coat were off, but she spotted them nearby, her coat draped over a high-backed chair, boots resting on the floor. A quick survey of herself found that her weapons were gone, too, but her disquiet subsided when she stood and crossed to a long, obsidian vanity, finding her sword, bow, and quiver leaned up against it. On the surface of the wood were her daggers, all seven of them lined up prettily in a row. Her heart picked up rhythm again. Ardyn had attacked her. He had brought her here, had made her comfortable, had taken her weapons, but then just left them for her to find like this. Why? Shaken by the contradictions he’d slammed her with, she examined the room again, noted how high up she was. This had to be the Citadel, and she was in a room intended for guests of the royal family.
A royal family which he claimed to be a part of.
Why, I’m your king. Ardyn Lucis Caelum.
That didn’t make sense. None of this made any sense. Why had miasma seethed from him if he was human? And why, why had he attacked her but not killed her? Still a possibility.
Don't. Panic. She forced herself to take a deep breath, held it, then at last expelled it. She repeated the exercise a few more times until she stopped feeling like something terrible was trying to claw up her throat. Despite the familiar weight of her weapons missing, her body had never felt heavier, and she was still drained from attempting holy magic. Melody winced as she touched her face where Ardyn had struck her, and a glance at the vanity mirror showed a purple bruise forming beneath her cheekbone. Nothing was broken, though, nothing but veins and those would soon heal. She was alive, and though another keen-eyed sweep of the room proved that her satchel of curatives was missing, she still had her weapons. Ardyn was either arrogant or stupid, and she could work with either. Melody brought her wrist up to check the time. Only to find that her watch wasn't there. No. Melody darted back to the bed, hands patting the comforter, ripping it off, scouring the sheets. Empty. Nonono. She moved to the vanity, examined every square inch of it before she started yanking out drawers—all empty—trying to find her watch. All in vain. "Son of a bitch," snapped Melody, flinging her coat back on the chair after searching through every single pocket. Her mantra of “don’t panic” was abandoned in some deep, dark place within her, too far away to hear. "Come now, let's not drag dear old mum into this." Melody spun around—only to find Ardyn at the room's entrance, door closed behind him. She hadn't heard it open or shut. "Give it back," she said, starting forward. Ardyn smiled, tilting his head. "Give what back?" He knew. She didn't know how, but the bastard knew how much that watch meant to her. Ardyn shook his head, hair moving freely since his hat was gone. "To be obsessed with time. How long it's been since I concerned myself with the seasons, the hours passing me by. If you stop to think for a moment, my dear, you'll realize I've done you a favor." "I want it back," she demanded. “Then I suppose you'll have to earn it, then, won't you?” He smirked, eyes glittering with something that made her stomach roil. “Not the way I expected this conversation to go, I admit, but I have been looking forward to seeing just how far you're willing to—” Without warning, Melody threw a dagger at him, snatching another from the vanity as she darted forward. The first sank through his coat, into his shoulder, and he staggered back. The second she raised, plunging it towards his heart. A ripple of miasma blasted her off her feet. She flew several feet, her back hitting the edge of the mattress and bed frame, and she yelped in pain as the latter bit into her spine. Then a hand was around her throat and she couldn't breathe. “Oh, how I hoped you wouldn’t be so easily subdued! Well done, my dear.” Ardyn dragged her up until she was laying diagonally upon the mattress, his lower body pinning her legs, her breaths coming shallow. It took her a moment to realize she still had her dagger in her hand. Melody brought it up with a jerking thrust, felt the knife cut straight through flesh and tendon, finding its mark. She waited for the feel of hot, sticky blood to gush on her hand, for his body to seize then release. But no blood came, and no life left him. Instead, Ardyn let out a long, breathy moan by her ear, the sound far more erotic than pained. His hand dropped from her throat. Only to pin down her free hand, fingers interwoven with hers, palm to palm, in a mockery of intimacy. "Well, now, what’s this? I’m still alive? Oh, how tragic. A valiant effort, but those aren’t the ones worthy of reward, are they?” He raised his head up from her neck, and Melody's eyes widened in horror at what she saw. The visage of a human had peeled itself away, leaving behind something foul, something so unquestionably daemonic Melody felt herself beginning to shake. Veins splintered like scars of black lightning upon his face, his neck, miasma dripping from the corner of his mouth, from his eyes. They had been amber before, but now they were a sick, unnatural yellow trapped in rotting, obsidian sclerae. She tried to call forth her magic, but there was nothing there, nothing left, not enough time to recharge.
"Poor Gladio,” the thing—the daemon—simpered to her. “The brute was trying to warn you, you know. Oh, if only you hadn’t been too stubborn to see it.” His voice still low and still human, dripping with false remorse. “He knew, they all knew exactly what you would find if you crossed into Insomnia. They knew that I was waiting here. Yet they didn't trust you enough to tell you. My, with friends like these..."
“How do you know all that?” It came out as a fearful whisper. Melody jerked the dagger, twisting it. Ardyn didn’t let out so much as a grunt. Merely kept smiling that same, inhuman, condescending smile. “Why aren’t you dead?”
“Because the pleasure of dying has been barred from me.” Bullshit. Melody pressed herself back into the mattress, so his chin couldn’t scrape against her cheek with its stubble and the taint dripping slowly down it did not touch her. “What do you want?”
“What do I want?” Ardyn laughed and rose, fingers brushing her palm before retreating and turning his back on her.
Melody watched him with round eyes, blindsided. Though her body shook, she managed to prop herself up on her elbows. If she tried to stand, would her legs cooperate?
“If you want answers, then I’m afraid you’ll just have to follow me,” Ardyn continued in a remorseless tone. “I’m quite adept at playing the charming host.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
“No?” Ardyn turned back, and Melody flinched. But his face was normal, that daemonic side of his submerged again. Her daggers still pierced his shoulder, his heart, and he didn’t seem to even notice. “Then I’ll be sure to give dear Benjamin Weyfamaris your regrets.” “Wait—what?” “A little rat scurries around my kingdom without my blessing, and you think I wouldn’t notice?” Then he was gone. The door never opened or shut. “Shit! Ben, shit!” Melody scrambled up, jerked on her boots, and gathered her remaining weapons with hasty, shaking hands. She burst through the door, almost shocked to find that it wasn’t locked, and ran. Where had he gone, and where were those elevators?
She ran so fast, her mind and body in panic mode, that she didn’t have time to appreciate the Citadel’s grandeur. The polished marble floor that reflected every footfall clearly. The countless curved archways along every hall. The breathtaking gold filigree on the surface of the gray walls. The myriad windows and skylights that must have made the place feel more open and free but which now gaped like maws of predators in the dark. Passing countless rooms with closed doors, Melody found the elevators at the end of the hall, and like her dreams, one was still operable. And she knew where it would take her. The throne room looked as it had in her dreams, dark, foreboding, dreary with emptiness. She didn’t even jump when Ardyn appeared out of nowhere and took hold of her wrist. “There you are, my dear girl. Care to join us after all? I thought you might.” She let him lead her forward, wondering how she could have allowed this man to so easily lure her here and trap her. Her mind raced with thoughts of how she was supposed to escape if he could be anywhere at any time, if he could not be killed. But then she saw Ben, strung up in chains above the throne, and her mind broke apart. “All the pieces on the board at last.” Ardyn said. He dropped her wrist, turned toward her, and smiled. “Let the games begin. I think we’ll start with…you.”
Ardyn’s eyes never left her horrified expression, not even when he snapped his fingers and Ben fell from the ceiling, the chains still tangled around him as he struggled to get on his hands and knees. Ardyn waved his hand toward the sailor and gave her the slightest bow. “Heal him.”
Melody was in shock. She had to be because she certainly hadn’t heard him right. “What?” she rasped.
“Heal him,” Ardyn enunciated for her slowly. He moved to stand beside her, looking sidelong at Ben’s form, now convulsing on the ground. “If you can.”
Ben’s head snapped up, and Melody’s heart stopped beating for a moment.
His eyes were gone, replaced with black holes of miasma, and his body was starting to change, to rot. He was becoming a daemon, and that made no sense because she hadn’t sensed a thing from him earlier, and she would have if he’d been infected with the Scourge. But even if he’d been exposed to it since coming here, there’s no way the transformation into a daemon should be happening this quickly.
“By the gods,” she whispered. She spoke to Ardyn, but her attention never strayed from Ben. “What the hell did you do?”
“Leave the gods behind where they belong, my dear. I thought of this all by myself.” She jumped when his hand landed on the small of her back, pushing her forward. “Hurry now, before the big, bad daemon gets us!”
“You bas—”
Ben lurched forward, on his knees now, a terrible screech ripping from his throat. She could just barely make out the words—kill me—before they were garbled beyond comprehension. At the sound, every hair on Melody’s arms rose.
Don’t panic.
She reached for the magic, hoping it would make a late arrival. She could feel a glimmer of it, deep down, borne of desperation and fear, but it was weak, far too weak.
Don’t panic.
Ben, or the thing that was now inhabiting Ben’s body, was thrashing at the chains, attempting to knock them off. But there were so many, and they were heavy. He’d be preoccupied for a while, at least.
“Tick, tock, tick, tock,” Ardyn called out, voice echoing merrily off the walls.
Don’t panic.
It was far too late for that.

Origins: Chapter Two - Scanlan Shorthalt, Slicer Extraordinaire
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a band of bounty hunters with hearts of gold formed to fight against the growing spread of evil in the Republic. But before they could do that, they each had to come from somewhere.
Based on this Star Wars AU
[ao3]
Scanlan slung his backpack onto the ground and settled back into his chair at the cantina comfortably. He was enjoying life under his new pseudonym in this part of town: no one recognized him, no one bothered him, and most importantly, no one asked questions. It had been five galactic standard months, and still, everyone he had come into contact with bought his story that he’d been displaced by the war without a second thought. It had barely taken more than a few forlorn glances and well timed tears for a few of his new neighbors to start offering to have him over for dinner while he “settled in”.
Scanlan almost snorted out loud at the thought, but reigned in the burst of humor to a private smile, just in case anyone was looking his way. He wondered what the neighbors would think if they knew his tiny new home was little more than a base camp for selling highly classified information to the highest bidder on both sides of their planetary civil war.
A quick glance around the cantina revealed that no one was focused in his direction. Satisfied that he wasn’t drawing any undue attention to himself, Scanlan pulled out his datapad and flicked the screen into life.
Scrolling through his marked pages on the holonet didn’t reveal much, except that the cantina had kriffing terrible reception. The usual updates were there: the war continues on, the Loyalists are all spineless suck ups to the King, the Insurgents are a band of malcontented warmongers. Nothing involving any of his previous identities or, gods forbid, his real name.
Satisfied for the moment that he was still a completely anonymous figure for both sides of the war, Scanlan switched away from the main news networks and pulled up the triple encrypted messaging system he had developed himself to stay in contact with his buyers.
[theMeatMan]: Information on Loyalist troop movements through the North West region going live in 20. Bidding starts at 2 million credits.
The page almost instantly lit up with messages from anonymous insurgent and loyalist buyers, as well as a few interested third parties. Scanlan smirked, and dropped the datapad back into his backpack. Now that he had their attention, all he had to do was get his hands on the information. Nothing the Meat Man couldn’t handle.
Scanlan stood up and stretched his arms out as wide as he could with a huge, attention-grabbing yawn. His hand smacked into the large glass of spiced beer perched on the armrest, sending liquid flying through the air. The glass shattered on the ground loudly, making everyone’s heads turn in his direction, including the barkeeper.
“Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry!” Scanlan said, adopting a convincingly horrified expression. “I didn’t mean to – oh my goodness, does anyone have anything to clean up glass with?”
The barkeeper sighed, and walked out from behind the counter with a broom and a rag as everyone else turned their attention back to their own drinks.
“I’m so sorry, sir, I really am just so clumsy sometimes, I didn’t mean to make such a mess,” Scanlan babbled as the barkeeper knelt down on the ground.
“It’s fine, just don’t expect a free replacement,” the barkeeper grumbled.
Scanlan hopped from foot to foot behind him, playing up the anxiety he was giving off. “I understand completely, that’s fair of course. Oh, as long as you’re over here, I think I should mention that I stepped into your ‘fresher a little while ago, and it’s clogged like you wouldn’t believe. I think someone must have been eating a mountain of Spicy Djo earlier, just looking at the mess they’ve made in there. You wouldn’t happen to have time to take care of that as well, would you?”
The barkeeper raised an eyebrow, before sighing heavily again. “Perfect. Just what I needed after the day I’ve had.”
“Thank you so much sir, you really are a gem, you know that?” Scanlan gave the man a winning smile as he lurched off with a dustpan full of glass towards the ‘fresher that Scanlan had purposefully stuffed three pairs of socks into earlier that day. With the barkeeper distracted and a pointed look around the cantina revealing the few other customers were completely focused on their own business, Scanlan ducked behind the bar counter.
For the most part, everything looked normal… except for the extremely well disguised safe that Scanlan would have mistaken for another cask of beer without the intel he’d received last night about the generous commission the cantina was receiving to retransmit Loyalist messages from the North to the South.
Scanlan twisted the “cask” around to reveal the ten digit number lock on the back. Ten billion possible combinations. He quickly slung his backpack off one shoulder and pulled out the scramble key he’d developed with an algorithmic security bypassing system. The key clicked into place and began whirring through possible combinations.
The process took nearly thirty seconds, and the first stirring of anxiety twisted in Scanlan’s stomach. If the barkeeper happened to poke his head around and saw him, he was quite literally a dead man.
After what seemed like an eternity, the scramble key flashed the number 2967329548 and the secret compartment swung open to reveal a transmitter blinking almost innocently at him.
Scanlan didn’t waste any time yanking a tangle of cords and his own bugging device out of his pockets and grafting them into the Loyalist device. He had to be coming up on two full minutes back here. A quick glance at his datapad revealed a steady stream of information coming in from the bug, as well as messages from buyers bidding steadily higher and… a flagged message pinned to the top labelled “[Doctor D]: YOU’VE BEEN MADE, SHORTHALT”.
A thrill of fear shot through Scanlan, and only years of work as a slicer prevented him from freezing entirely. He automatically pocketed the scramble key, twisted the safe back into position, and darted out from behind the bar. Somewhere in the back of his mind he thanked the gods that the cantina was nearly empty and no one happened to be watching the bar as the snuck out the side exit. He was practically running away from the bar, which was bad form if he was trying to stay inconspicuous, but he couldn’t think straight around the urgent panic at the forefront of his consciousness. A landspeeder nearly ran him over as he ducked into an alleyway far away from the cantina and hurriedly turned on the datapad.
[theMeatMan]: You know how I feel about using real names, Dranzel.
[Doctor D]: had to get your attention – have you seen the holonet in the past few minutes??
A link popped up on the screen. INFAMOUS ‘MEAT MAN’ SLICER SELLING MILITARY INFORMATION REVEALED, OTHER ALIASES EXPOSED
Scanlan felt this heart drop into his stomach. His hands trembled in a way they hadn’t for years as he typed up a reply.
[theMeatMan]: How did this happen.
[Doctor D]: someone calling themselves K Lee, apparently been tracking you for nearly year, whoever they are they’re good. must have contacted everybody at the same time and ratted you out. karking son of a vetch must be filthy rich by now
[theMeatMan]: I have to leave
[Doctor D]: figured you would. there’s a few transports off world left if you can manage to get yourself to the capitol in the next couple of days. good luck out there
Scanlan gave himself three seconds to panic, then closed his eyes and drew in a deep calming breath. In for four, out for four. In for four, out for eight.
When he opened his eyes, he closed down the messaging system and pulled up his set of fake ID’s, nearly all of which were completely useless now. Except for one.
“Francois Bertrand Jean-Luc Australia, wealthy traveling merchant, first-class clearances.”
Time for one last performance.

Excerpt (Pre-Title #2)
706 OV / 54 BA
Coppersun Kingmoon
The man who was once Vayne Carrudas Solidor took another step forward. His massive foot dragged, and he lurched forward, clutching his abdomen. Every part of him was too large; his body was glutted, bloated with Mist, and the wind was like a wall pressing him backwards. But step he did, further across the deck of the Sky Fortress Bahamut—more than six miles above the desert but sinking slowly.
His fingers tangled in the something draped across his chest, and he realized, with absurdity, that his decorations still hung over his bulbous frame, distorted by nethicite. His clothes were all but gone, but somehow the medals still hung there. They were anchored by two large crosses, each one earned by slaying a supposedly-treasonous brother. And somewhere behind him was Larsa, ready at last to stand on his own. His mind was sluggish—the stones made it so hard to think clearly—but some part of him knew that it was time to exit the stage.
“Venat!” He called out to the sky, and took another skidding, shuddering step. Behind him, he could hear the scattered footfalls of his killers approaching even over the roar of the sky, but they seemed to fade when she at last appeared before him, twin burning eyes amidst a shapeless cloud. It—she, Cid had thought—hovered there, just beyond arm's reach, expectant as always, forever an unspoken promise.
He still remembered the first time she'd deigned to appear to him as she had Doctor Cid, first as the spots in one's eyes from clenching them too tight, and then coalescing into something cocoon-like, with a halo, and that radiating warmth that had reminded Vayne just a little of his late mother. Below them, he could see the Bahamut's glossair rings rotating in opposite directions, and it only now occurred to him that Cid had refashioned the relic in Venat's image.
His voice gasped and gulped as he staggered towards her. “I have failed us both... I am no Dynast-King.” Had failed Larsa. Had failed Cid. And his empire as well. He'd been failing people, he knew, since seventeen, not least himself. “You must find another. One who might realize your ambitions.”
Venat's voice was always twofold; male and female, purr and echo. “They are fulfilled beyond your knowing.” She retreated slowly, only just keeping pace with him as he took single step by single step, to where the deck widened at a massive Imperial seal. “The Cryst is sundered, Age of Stones complete.” A darkened room in Draklor, Cid taking him into confidence. Whispered truths about the Gods. Vayne had declared resistance—insurgence—on the spot. His younger brother could not, would not rule as a puppet to forces beyond their ken. His brother who'd turned blade upon him, as he once had to his own elder siblings. “From the Undying Ones, the world is free.”
To Vayne Solidor, history had been naught but a series of repetitions, tiered roads like those of the Archadian capital itself, where those below could never see those above, and those above rarely deigned to look below, each path leading to the same destination. The crest ahead marked the observation deck, which was a dead-end, highest in the sky.
“You shall not tread this path alone,” said Venat, “Together we go. Come.” She turned to let him past, and followed behind as he marched. And for a man who'd denied the Gods, he found himself grateful for the blessing.
Vayne let out a bitter chuckle. He could feel his own withered teeth coming loose in his mouth. Behind him, the street rat approached, and behind him the sky pirate, the one who'd slain Vayne's best friend. Surely the princess was soon to follow. “Won't Cid be eager to learn what has happened here...” He kept walking, and found he had a sense of irony remaining. “History begins anew.”
He could feel Venat entering his body, and it was strangely muted, almost numb at first. His steps were lighter, and he almost didn't notice that the Mist that leaked from his body had begun to ignite. As raw magickal energy pulsed out of him without effort, tendrils of Occurian power that erupted whatever lay in their wake, it was his mind that changed. He could feel her presence suffusing all of his thoughts, and each bit of flame that shot out, crippling an Atomos or digging through the Bahamut's hull, felt like casting aside a bit of himself he no longer needed: that one a state dinner at age fourteen, this one a dissident he'd killed with his bare hands at nineteen. Just let me keep Larsa, he wanted to beg her, but he did not, because they were the same being now, and because he could see his brother's long life spool out before him, and what came after as well.
He flicked fire from his fingers and detonated a light cruiser, but it did not register, because the omniscience of a God was overtaking who he was. He—they—were one, now, without transition, and even as he tore the sky fortress apart, pulling pieces of his friend's handiwork to also become a part of him—for it was all of Cid they had left—the thoughts and understanding of a God were destroying all he was.
In the last moments of the Undying, as he rose on hundreds of wings above slayers of his dream, he understood what Venat understood, and he could see the future that lay beyond their Age of Stones. He could see it all, every year before and aft, and it was then that The Undying began to scream.
In the air he turned to face his killers, knowing Venat as well had wanted to die all along. But now he knew what else she had planned for Ivalice, and wanted to be extinguished, because he could not bare the knowledge. For nothing truly ends, and man's mark on history would ever be as fingers trailed through sands like Dalmasca's below him, swept away by the winds of powers greater.
Machine and Man and God, he roared beneath the weight of twelve hundred years.
