Oh, huh! In this behind the scenes gifset we see that this costume, the particoloured underlayer worn with the Chrysalis Gown, is carefully planned, with the brocade only where it will show, and the rest black. The pleated skirt is very full, but also split to reveal the black and gold brushwork underlayer, only when he moves.
I bet this makes a good deal of noise.

I love finding LBFAD BTS I haven’t seen before. 🥰
(Though clearly not appropriate for this scene, judging by the dream sequence, DFQC absolutely does get that silly with her in private post-canon.)

I finished Guardians of the Dafeng.
I'm still trying to collect my thoughts after episode 40 because not a single part of me expected any of the breaking into the imperial palace, violence towards the bad guys, shirking his teacher for what he believed was right, the beheading(s), accusing the emperor of wrongdoing. It was the determination to do what was right, to get vengeance for ZXH and the 380,000 innocent civilians, no matter the consequences to himself was just...whoa.
Whatever anyone feels about comedies is valid - I rarely go in for them myself and I know a lot of folks had big feelings about this being so silly upfront - but I truly think Wang Hedi absolutely nailed this role. He is obviously so, SO suited to comedic performances. It's his wheelhouse and happy place without a doubt. And he delivered so much humor in such a fresh and charming way (all the obvious bloopers they left in as the final scenes, the silly shenanigans with his other copper gongs, the family dynamic). But he also really shined in this big, poignant, heartbreaking moment too. The emotion in this scene reminded me so much of him grieving the loss of Xiao Lanhua in Love Between Fairy and Devil. He cries so hard and it's not pretty and it's not delicate, it's gutting. The emotions that he digs up from somewhere - the sheer agony and heartbreak that he shows to the world - really is astonishing for someone his age.
And seeing the BTS of both this scene (and the scene in LBFAD), you can tell he goes to a seriously brutal place because it takes him many moments and even many more hugs to come out of it.
The ending was definitely strange and open and definitely in anticipation of a second season but since that's always unlikely in cdramaland, I'll just count it as finished and an open ending is fine in this instance.

I do think you can kind of tell that LBFAD ran out of money to film more episodes because it was a pretty lowbudget production that unexpectedly blew up, and a number of subplots had to be trimmed or cut entirely(there was initially supposed to be a danyin/xunfeng plotline, there are bts pics, but they ran out of time). given the givens i think they landed the plane pretty well even if I'm a bit frustrated that nothing bad ever happens to yunzhong
Hearing that it was low-budget is genuinely surprising to me! My frame of reference is extremely limited, but aside from the Shuiyuntian fashions (which read as cheap to me because I associate that kind of lightweight iridescent fabric with, like, kids' princess costumes), I was impressed with the production values. The green screen and CGI were decent, the wigs looked good, the weapons moved like they had some weight to them, the makeup for injuries and illness never made me think "I could do that better with my one Ben Nye palette," the costume designs were a lot of fun (and reflected character growth!), the jewelry and other accessories were lovely, and scenes that were supposed to involve massive crowds or armies actually looked like they included hundreds of people so you didn't have an ostensibly massive rebellion that includes zombies being fought by like 40 dudes max and they're the same 40 dudes in every scene FOR EXAMPLE. The last six or so episodes definitely felt rushed, but even then it wasn't to the degree of the last few episodes of Word of Honor (which itself wasn't as bad as the last few episodes of HBO's Rome and that should give you an idea of just how jarring THAT show's cancellation was). So they made that little budget work!
Xunfeng and Danyin... hmm. I'm not opposed, and they'd have a lot to talk about if they ever met each other (they are both assholes who feel they deserve more but are also insecure and resentful and need to work on that!), but I'm glad their actual during-the-show plotlines didn't include a romance. The show is pretty full-up on romantic love, and having two core characters who are transformed foremost by the power of familial love (Xunfeng) and fraternal love (Danyin) was one of my favorite things about the conclusion! I wouldn't have liked the show as well if every character had ended up neatly paired off.
Yunzhong 100000% deserved worse though. I genuinely didn't get why his authority is so unquestioned because he doesn't... do anything to merit it? He's not the strongest. He's not the most charismatic. He isn't in possession of a resource that the other fairies need. He's not the eldest among them all. He's not the wisest or the sneakiest. He's just this boring jerk who's a little too invested in his brother's personal life (but not even in a compelling messed up way! just an annoying way!) and wants to provoke imperialist wars of aggression so bad it makes him look stupid. He was wrong CONSTANTLY and it's fully possible that he learned nothing even after Xunfeng showed up with the rest of the Moon Tribe to help. I choose to believe that Danyin lowkey assassinates him once she becomes God of War.

Talking about kisses!!!
I should cover my eyes or look away... but... WHOA!!! *fans self*
Understandable that they edited it (so much!?) for the final cut. The censors would probably go apoplectic if they did not!
* I feel like I'm intruding while watching but I can't look away!

the way dfqc’s soul and spirit ends up contained in a single, small piece of an item shaped like the moon but covered with twisting vines that can fit in the curve of xlh’s palm is just. like. that’s so utterly symbolic.
dongfang qingcang, larger than life, most powerful in all of the three realms, is contained in this beautiful, hopeless-hopeful, tragic thing. the moon, representing his tribe, his people, his loyalty, but the vines, representing his heart, his person, his love. it’s curled around his very soul, unwilling to let go for 500 years, and he is grown and tended to and cared for and so so loved until…
he finally comes home.

"But it is my mission to save you"
I swear, I SWEAR, I'm trying to move on from this show, but listening to sad music and rewatching the YT clips isn't helping.
So here I am, once again thinking about that moment, about that exchange. It is the climax of the story, the entire plot leads to that exact scene.
LBFaD is about the inner conflict the characters face when they're forced to choose between duty/destiny (aka heaven's will) and love (free will). And the thing is that they always pick duty above love because their hands are tied and going against fate has grave consequences.
This happens every single time EXCEPT in that scene.
When Changheng has to choose bt saving XLH and saving the fairy realm, he chooses the latter, because he's the god of war, because he's an immortal of shuiyuntian.
When DFQC has to choose between his relationship with XLH and the lives of his people, he, again, chooses the latter, because he is a monarch, and as such he as a duty to his people.
When XLH had to choose between her own life and the life of the soldiers. Guess what? Yeah, she stabs herself.
And the thing is that, as the goddess, she knows she has to make the same choice again. She has to sacrifice herself to save the common people, because she is the Goddess is Xishan.
BUT THEN enters DFQC and goes "Uh-huh not on my watch. I think I've seen this film before and I didn't like the ending." And he, for the first time in the show, doesn't choose duty. Not only that, with this sacrifice, he's also keeping XLH from fulfilling her duty.
"It is my destiny to save the world. Not yours."
"Bu it is my mission to save you."
He was the only character brave enough to defy Heaven's will by choosing love.

Getting emotional thinking about the first leaks of my kids in costume. I was sadly not here yet for LBFAD, but I was for LGIEF and I was so hyped. I am retroactively experiencing the hype for Canglan.
Xiao Lanhua’s is so magical. You can tell just from that BTS pic how much she is going to nail the role. The layers of skirts!! Her smile!!
Also I remember when Ziqi’s came out people thought if was photoshopped because Ding Yuxi looked ‘too good’ and they’d never found him attractive. As if he hasn’t always been a total cutie. 😭
