I think ppl do mel's character a huge disservice when they choose to ignore her more morally grey parts.

People react very defensively when someone calls mel 'manipulative' and that is very annoying bc these ppl act like everyone pointing out mel's manipulation or influencing is hating on her which is ridiculous??? Her slyness is one of my favourite things about her.

She IS kind. She isnt a bad person and i dont even think her personal gain is her main motivator, but power IS important to her. How could it not be when ambessa is her mother. "Mel haters are calling her manipulative!!" she is??? babe literally one of her first scenes is about her blatantly manipulating someone. And YES, she also manipulated jayce.

Its most apparent in the scene where she talks to jayce and viktor about potentially weaponising hextech, the difference between her attitude towards viktor and jayce is JARRING. She knows she cant influence viktor, so she simply just excludes him from the conversation and talks directly to jayce, putting on a much softer and more affable persona (Viktor even visibly reacts to that). That doesnt mean shes only using jayce or that she doesnt love him or that she HATES viktor, i dont think most of her manipulations are something she does consciously (we could get psychological about this being a learned tactic from growing up with a distant, demanding, narcissistic mother), which is why shes genuinely shocked when jayce blows up at her for "using him and viktor" in s2. I think she genuinely didnt see it that way and saw it as subtly guiding them (mostly jayce) towards success, but that doesnt mean she didnt sway him towards a path she picked out for him. (Which, lbr, he also very much let her do to him. Like hes not putting up a fight.)

That is a core part of her character and one of the most interesting, bc it tells us so much about her. Yall are always calling for more morally grey, complicated women, but when someone actually wants to talk about the complicated parts yall act like its an insult to the character. Like why would you want mel to be LESS interesting?? She IS a fox.

Devi's parents are named Cab and Toshiko. they have three other kids together w the youngest being 8 years older than Devi, so they were pretty chill parents for the first few years of his life. theyre both huge nature lovers so they taught him a lost about saftey in the forest surrounding Westchester, so thats why they were fine w him just wandering the forest for funsies. when Jane died, they became a bit uuuuuh. helecopter-y but eased up on it a bit by him getting to hs bc Devi is VERY independant

during the events of ilitw, they were in Japan to help Toshiko's family w the death of her aunt. Devi was also there for the funeral, but when there started being some Family Drama about estate or whatever, Toshiko & Cab decided to stay in Japan while Devi went back to the states. its the first time he's left alone, & his parents are a bit worried about it at first but two of his older siblings live in the states & could go to him if he needed anyone with him. plus theyre only supposed to stay there for a week, two at tops, & will be back by the first week of school [looks into the camera and shakes my head]

theyre delayed bc of Totally Normal But Dangerous To Fly In Weather & Devi convinces them that he's fine to stay by himself for a bit longer (really he just wants to make sure that Redfield doesnt do anything to them) but the night Cody dies in their front yard they panic & do their best to go home asap. id say its like a sort of Home Alone type thing where his parents are taking this crazy route to get home & his sister who lives in Japan just waits for the weather to clear but they all end up back in Westchester at the same time

they arrive back in Westchester the night of Homecoming, but arent able to get to Redfield's ruins until right after Devi dies

Cab and Toshiko deal w grief in two different ways, so Cab is mostly very emotional and will just start telling whoever's nearby about His Special Baby Boy, and Toshiko thinks theres somsthing Off about Devi's death. its way too similar to how Jane died to be a coincidence, so she starts looking into all of the same things Devi & co were investigating and starts to figure out whats going on. she eventually finds his conspiracy board out in the shed & convinces Lucas to tell her what really happened (he was just stopping by to get pictures of Devi for an In Memorium page for the yearbook. there wasnt enough pictures of Devi at school for them to use)

as for ilw, where they are changes based on which route i'm going for. in most versions, Stacey & Connor convince them to leave town around the same time as the carnival so they arent effected by the rain. in the Everyone Dies Badly route, Connor isnt able to convince them to leave on his own & they stay and die at the carnival

while Toshiko knows about all the weird supernatural stuff in Westchester, she mostly stays out of it bc she doesnt want to lose any more of her family. i think she knows that Devi is a ghost & will visit him, but idk if she's told Cab or not

& their thoughts on Devi dating Noah. at first they don't like it but Devi tells them that his death was his own choice actually and they shouldnt blame Noah for it bc he was manipulated by his dead sister and also he spent the better part of the last five years learning necromancy to bring him back to life. & they warm up to it, especially when they see how much Noah and Devi care about each other <3

im curious to know what yall’s headcanons for ilitw mc’s parents are… canonically they were away for the duration of the book because they were handling something like their aunt’s estate, but what happens after the book? do you guys have different headcanons for where mc’s parents are or their family dynamics in general? and what role do they play in ilw?

au i'm planning in my head (WILL i ever write outside of my head again?) where alex and henry went to college together but "hated each other" and then when years later in nyc they meet again henry works at a magazine and alex is a model and they become roomates somehow. bc when aren't they roomates? and lbr henry is struggling bc 1. he still has it bad for alex after all these years - embarrassing ??- who walks around the apt half naked all the time AND 2. he has put on some weight since college bc he started working out a lot to overcompensate for his depression (real thing) and even tho it's mostly muscle he still keeps comparing himself to alex. classic gay shit. but little does he know that alex is actually going crazy bananas abt how wide shouldered and yummy henry has gotten and he wants to touch his hair so bad and get on his knees for him and he doesnt really wanna be a model anymore tbqh maybe he wants to be a lawyer and well. i wonder what would happen...

i like angst, sorry ┐(´∀｀)┌ but continuing the whole 'how does viktor's side of the family cope with his impending(sp?) death' i cant help but think how they react to the news that hes having a baby cause like. theyre genuinely happy for him! hell it probably doesnt even register to the kids that a pregnancy could be bad for his body. but silco damn well knows that his own pregnancies almost killed him and before the whole Eye/Face Thing he had mostly decent health. its probably why he was always so insistent that viktor only have kids when hes actually ready for it. silco does kind of want to murder jayce a little more than usual, and its not just cause hes a piltite (he should KNOW if he loves viktor as much as he says he does that this all could potentially kill him!)

also, i forgot to add this in the previous ask, but silco (and lowkey vander lbr) ends up feeling awful for thinking all of that cause he fucking adores naph. like he still thinks viktor and jayce couldve been smarter about it but he genuinely loves that little brat so Where Does He Go From There, yknow?

There's a reason I tend to go with Jayce and Viktor having their baby more early in their partnership than later (and reason why I generally go with them having only one) - as Viktor's illness progresses the chance of him surviving a pregnancy decreases.

Not only did Silco emphasis that his kids shouldn't have kids until they are themselves actually ready he also emphasised (to them all, but especially Viktor) that they don't need to even have kids at all. He's not the kind of parent to actively wish for having grandchildren (and he's pretty sure he's going to get some with the amount of kids he has) and he's also very pro adoption as a child acquisition method (going so far as to joke at times that if he had of known Vander would be as happy with adopting as he was he wouldn't have bothered going through pregnancy as many times as he did).

Funnily enough because all the kids grew up with Silco's horror pregnancy stories (there are just part of his regular monologues to them) their first reaction to finding out Viktor is pregnant is all some variation of "but why would you do that?" As the pregnancy progresses though they get more excited. They do know pregnancy can be dangerous (again Silco monologues) but I don't think they fully appreciate the risk - it's more kind of something to joke about to them.

There's no point in time or change to the situation that would make Silco not at least a little mad at Jayce getting Viktor pregnant. And honestly Viktor's getting a bit annoyed about it because they are in their mid-20s, independently wealthy, and have grand-parent support from both sides. They are in a far better position than Silco debatably was for any of his (and far better than he was when he had Viktor). Yes, Viktor's health is a concern, but that's why they're going to have doctors involved for the whole pregnancy. Viktor has calculated the risk and come to the side that it's worth it. Unless Silco wants to offer something helpful to the situation he can fuck right off with his opinion.

In Jayce's defense I don't think he was really aware of how bad pregnancy can go until Viktor gets pregnant and he starts reading up about pregnancy (because he's the kind of person who would read up about it if his partner's pregnant) and starts finding out about all the potential complications. And now he is aware he is very worried because he knows Viktor isn't as healthy as the average person and he cannot lose him.

I don't think Silco realised how much he would love his grandchildren until Naph is born. He's not a warm and fuzzy person and he knows it. He's protective of his children because it sucked for him to obtain them but he shouldn't have that with his grandchildren. He's very neutral on children that are not his own. So while he always planned on helping his children out however he could with his grandchildren I really don't think he expected how much he adores Naph from as soon as the boy's born. I don't think he feels that guilty about his thoughts before Naph was born - the pregnancy could have still ended badly he wasn't wrong. The fact that it turned out alright is lucky and, well, Naph's here now the risky part's over (now no trying to have another one you two).

Vander always knew he'd love his grandkid. His concern during the pregnancy was purely Viktor's health and prioritizing that over the baby. Once Naph is born and Viktor is fine that worry doesn't matter anymore and he can just dote on his grandchild.

alhaitham seems simple but has a lot going on deeper (aka alhaitham loves media literacy)

ok all the alhaitham discourse makes me think about how there's a mismatch between alhaitham's perception and his actual self

that difference leads to:

- his moe gap

- the way that he's seen as mean/uncaring

- ppl thinking he doesnt have a personality or temper

- his humor & wit going unnoticed

i feel like i go back and forth on how complicated alhaitham is, but it all comes down to the way that he's an unreliable narrator

(he obfuscates the truth by not including details or by distracting with non-answers, so there's just a lot we don't know for certain)

like when his "something to share" voiceline is "oh i like to go to the bar after work to relax"

and he teases traveller like "if u want to know what i think, u can just read what's on the message boards lol"

when we all know he's just playing devil's advocate with kaveh on those message boards like BRUH this is on purpose

i keep harping on how his "food i dislike" voiceline gives a weird reason for why he dislikes soup because it really shows how you cannot take him seriously at all! despite his serious demeanor and tone!

taking him at 100% face value is just asking to be made a fool of bc he was being sarcastic rip lol

but that makes him a much harder character to understand! bc you have to question everything he says about himself.

like the "feeble scholar" line was literally just a joke and he's like "lol if ya wanna waste ur time getting hung up on it go ahead"

he isn't actually serious!!

and interestingly, he also doesn't care if he's understood by other people

so he won't really bother correcting incorrect assumptions about him

and he won't stop making weird sarcastic jokes that sound serious at first bc lol he thinks he's funny so why would he stop

but its not that he /can't/ be serious. so now you have to judge every line for "ok but is this a joke or real"

and even if it is genuine, next you have to consider "what's left out" because alhaitham will not be bothered to explain himself in detail. no, figure it out yourself

and sure that level of critical thinking and meta-analysis is good to apply to characters in media, but to understand alhaitham you actually have to go that deep

you can't just be lazy about it and go with a surface-level understanding

and he does this on purpose lbr

alhaitham likes reading books bc he loves picking apart the author's perspective & figuring out biases/assumptions & placing his own takes up against the author's

so of course he would delight in forcing a reader/player/fan to have to dig deeply into how he thinks & compare to themself

sorry that's called critical thinking and if you aren't capable of that then why the heck should he stoop down to your level so he can be understood?

he is interested in learning more about himself tho, hence him wanting to use kaveh as a "mirror" for self-reflection... haitham is a scholar of his own self too!

but yeah alhaitham purposefully chooses to live freely as he wants and doesn't care about being understood easily by other ppl

hey, remember the Harvest Moon festival? Remember how Stolas is the ONLY ONE who could do a specific, complex ritual needed to MAKE HELL'S CROPS GROW? Because I fucking remember. And I'm seeing The Only Guy Who Could Do It utterly fucking depowered. His heiress is capable but lacks training, guidance, a safe home, and afaik even the grimoire that she'd need to do it. You know who is in charge? Two demons with rulership over ICE. Stolas' palace used to be a representation of the balance of the stars, and by extension the balance of Hell's seasons. There were flourishing plants. Now the star charts are covered in ice. Everything is covered in ice. The plants, except a few in Octavia's storeroom/closet/idk, are dead. We dont even know if the Harvest Moon Festival is the only one of its kind, there could be a spring one. We have anywhere from 3-10 MONTHS for a 17 YEAR OLD to not only realize this is a duty she has to take on, but teach herself to do the ritual totally from memory, without her father and possibly without the book she needs. she'll also have to go behind the backs of the ppl currently abusing(emotionally/psychologically at the VERY least) her, travel out of her home ring, and appear in a public ceremony that, if its not canceled outright, will be anticipating the arrival of said abusive family.

and if she fails? the crops don't grow, there's no fruit, no vegetables, no feed for the animals. that street market we saw this episode had produce being sold (and I rly wonder if this was an intentional storytelling choice here...) but they wont soon, unless something changes. The crops wont grow, Hell's seasons wont turn, famine will spread, and it wouldnt be shocking if the ice began to creep further and further into lands where Stolas' balance-focused influence previously existed. Ever wanted to know if Hell can freeze over? This could be how we find out. and this famine wont affect Stella or Andrealphus or whatever its name is. it'll affect farmers, and then lower class imps, and then whatever counts for a middle class. the rich may CHANGE their diets a bit but lbr, Goetia can probably import food directly from Earth if they want to. Meanwhile, the same community who hailed Blitz as a hero will be starving soon, and Hell's ecosystems gradually falling into disarray, all because a certain owl prince couldnt put millions of lives above his own emotions.

the thing i LOOOVE tapping into with akirui (and akikasa/akiruikasa) as well is that for all akito bitches and moans hes more like rui (and tsukasa) then he insists he isnt.

i made another post before about akito and tsukasa both push themselves beyond their health limits for their dreams (and as well in my fic 'the balsam, fallen silent' it comes up that tsukasa's stunt in phoenix pissed akito off BECAUSE of how much it reminded him of himself with what happened in sbd)

with rui you have to read between the lines a bit more but there's a big deal made of how they're both very passionate about what they create and making what they create the best they can be

similarly to the phoenix/sbd stuff, rui does also push himself in a different but similar way, as seen in darkfes, where akito chastises him for downplaying his injury and to let people help him for the sake of putting on the best show possible.

you could argue there's a point of comparison to be made about how much they mask. akito with his polite front he uses around people he doesn't know, and rui reigning himself in at best or acting completely detached from what hurts him at worst. there's an excerpt from a fic i really like that summarizes rui's state well i think:

and also as well as of the most recent event, we have rui asking akito who does and doesn't know about the latter's fear of dogs because he's trying to be delicate and careful regarding discussion of what is described to be trauma for akito, and akito is shown to be surprised and very touched by this act.

i don't think akito ever truly fully hated tsukasa or rui, but in the case of rui you can really see how much akito grows to tolerate and enjoy his company, to the point he can enjoy himself in rui's presence so long as rui doesn't try to treat him like tsukasa (ie: the situations)

also if i can ever finish the wip i have w/ them. the topic does come of shinei being a shithead, and i don't think we talk enough about how of the times we've seen rui genuinely pissed off and ready to throwdown it was about someone harming (emotionally or otherwise) a person he cares about. rui would hear about shinei and experience a rage unlike anything he's experienced since the scuffles with shosuke emus brothers. ive said this before but if akitoya is "lets run away together and we can escape everything and everyone thats ever hurt us", akirui is "you can run to me, i'll protect you. i won't let anyone hurt you ever again"

SO hard to get him to crack a smile. lowkey causing a scene in the restaurant by being such a clown... but marc isnt really biting. is still responding, like they ARE having a conversation, but its nothing like it used to be. clearly he is just being polite. smiles twice ALL night—all wan and pale and beautiful and so clearly exhausted—and vale's mouth gets all dry and his ribcage feels like its going to implode. and of course in response to this he is like wow. my heartburn is going crazy. damn. like looking to real life, as awkward as rosquez have been in their years of estrangement, they have always had to share space. for 6 years in that paddock ! that's a lot of years of small talk ! they can have and will do it if necessary... so as the night drags i think marc talks about riding and the season to fill in the gaps... goes home and gives himself a list of regimented rules to stick to when interacting with valentino (i see him texting exclusively the PR thread more as his classically unpracticed self protection style than like. a deliberate fuck you to that end. i cant drunk booty call vale if karen from PR is also there type stuff). that being said, eventually i do think he makes elaborate excuses to BEND these rules bc he still wants valentino's attention. and also his tongue in his mouth. hes like okay! i am only kissing valentino in front of tv cameras if we both podium! and then they DONT share a podium and hes like. okay! it would be WEIRD if i didnt kiss vale after i podiumed even if he didnt! because thats what i would do if we were actually together! you know whats weird is how often noah is partnered with just millie in interviews and stuff? lor noah will be straight up missing from stuff all the others are in?

which is weird because im positive he doesnt film more often than millie or finn. like it feels like any time you see them there's intentionally very little noah involvement, esp not with him and finn.

is it a tom holland they'll spoil it thing? was it backlash because of will's sexuality? or were they tryna bury main character will that hard? ive seen a lot of people (lbr mostly homophobes but still) theorize that the rest of the cast just hates noah or something and only millie likes him because of it so i knowwww im not the only one seeing it. i just cant help wonder why

If it's asks you want, asks you shall get! I remember you mentioning that you think Spot will probably die in the next movie. However, Miles says something like "Spot only wants to be respected, like everyone else," before he gets interrupted by Miguel. Maybe this could hint at Spot making it out alive. Or this is just wishful thinking on my part. And if he really does die in the next movie, then it will be due to his own actions, like using up all his powers or smth like that.

tbh, my reasoning for spot dying can be boiled down to a few points. but first, i wanna talk about...

why i absolutely believe spot shouldnt be killed off.

1. the current narrative is that miles is effectively breaking the cycle that is "canon", giving a big 'ol Fuck You to whats defined as fate and inevitable pain. spots trying to force miles in to the narrative hes made up in his head (which coincides with whats meant to be "canon"), but things dont have to be that way and miles KNOWS that. i think itd be thematically appropriate if miles breaks this cycle of cruelty and allows spot to survive, making him have to face his own actions and crippling lack of self worth and actually work to make things better, for himself and everyone hes hurt.

2. im overly attached to spot being disability-coded, for more on that, please read this amazing post that opened my third eye. anyway, the tl;dr is that spot behaves and is treated a lot like a newly, visibly disabled person, subject to the same prejudices as they are as well as being forced to navigate an entirely new body, as somebody might have to if they were to receive a workplace injury that left them disfigured and permanently disabled. this is also why id like it if he doesnt get turned human again/"cured" at the end. it just doesnt feel like itd be satisfying for things to end like that for him. if anything, the most satisfying conclusion to his arc would if he got stopped, and then be given the opportunity to finally take responsibility for his own actions, and acknowledge his own fault in what happened to him and that it ultimately wasnt miles that did this to him and that even so, one of the things thats NOT spots fault is how he got treated for what happened to him so he really should get understanding and validation in that department. he also deserves to learn how to accept himself (beyond seeing his new form and powers as a tool to pursue revenge) as he is instead of it being framed likes hes only worthy of respect and recovery once he becomes human again.

3. i like him a lot and thinks he deserves better than to just be killed off.

why i think that despite it all, spot will be killed off:

1. any form of redemption or willingly giving up entirely depends on if spot can bring himself to listen to reason and take responsibility for his actions. something weve seen that hes notoriously bad at.

2. why would spot willingly choose to give up and back down when hes got absolutely nothing left for him in life? theres literally nobody waiting for him on the other side of this if he does. no family. no friends. no job. nothing. he might consider himself too far gone.

3. while 90s cartoon spot DID redeem himself, he did it through a heroic sacrifice...

4. lbr spiderman villains usually either get jailed or killed off. why would things be different for spot. because hes sympathetic? a lot of villains are. hes also insanely powerful and this could end up as a "destroys himself"" situation.

5. spot might be about to commit mass murder, which...definitely makes it harder to consider him as somebody "worthy of redemption".

6. ive watched so many of my favorite characters die. im not kidding i have the worst luck. 98% of them have been killed off and i think spot might be next in line bc its unlikely the writers care about him as much as i do. :(
