after finding out he's trans from Draxum, Leo drops the news to his family with a joke and zero explication. The family wants to be a supportive as possible, but misunderstand and think that Leo just came out as transfem. The fact they didn't even consider Leo is biofem is surprisingly validating.

“Guess who just gave a new meaning to to word trans-portation!”

This is the first thing Leo says to everyone after going off with Draxum to who-knows-where for who-knows-what.

“Normally, I unfortunately understand the flow of logic for Leo’s puns, but I admit that I am blanking here.” Donnie says, looking at Leo with narrowed eyes.

Leo laughs - maybe a bit hysterically - as he saunters on over to the rest of his family. “Eh, just a little joke about my awesome portal powers mixed with- uh-“ He coughs into his fist, finding it difficult to keep his regular act up. “-a fab new finding about myself. Turns out I was born…a female turtle……?”

There’s silence for a moment.

Then- “Omigosh! Leo!” An orange blur rockets its way into Leo’s arms, making the slider let out and “oof” before steading both he and Mikey. “Thank you for telling us! Wait, is it still Leo? Or Lea now, maybe?”

The shock wheels its way out of Raph’s form as he comes over, eyes shiny, “I’m glad you told us, little sis.”

Leo blinks at them. “Wait-“

“Please note that if any of our enemies or allies refers to you incorrectly I can and will use deadly force to correct them.” Donnie states, with a grin that looked a little too excited about the idea.

“Same here!” April states, pounding one hand into another, “And- it’s cool to have another girl around.”

Leo thinks something got lost in translation. ��Uh, guys-“

Splinter comes up to his side, patting his arm gently. “Oh, my Baby Blue, I’m so proud of you, my daught-“

“Oh.” Raph blinks down at him, surprise on his face, “Oh we may have jumped the gun there.”

“Well, this is embarrassing, though my offer of violence stands.” Donnie states.

Mikey rubs the back of his head sheepishly, “So…still Leo? Our brother?”

Leo gives a fond grin, “Yeah, yeah, still your brother.”

(April makes a noise of amusement, elbowing Splinter as everyone turns to her, “Hey, y’know what Splints? I think your DNA may have accidentally became some kinda HRT for Leo.”

Donnie thinks, “It does make sense, if a female red eared slider were to become mutated with a male human’s DNA then hypothetically it could create a mutant that takes on a more masculine outer appearance while retaining the female make up that was used as the base-“

S1E14: Gender Bender

Case: In what is arguably one of the most "why did you write this??" plots so far, our dynamic duo (per Mulder's request, I might add) investigate the deaths of five victims who appear to have, like... been fucked to death? Or something?

Actually I have to interrupt my own summary here, bc I just looked up the Wikipedia page (yes, bc I was trying to remember the state, shut up), and Glen Morgan is apparently quoted as saying he wanted "an episode with more of a sexy edge." How that ended up being this particular episode, I cannot say. That is an X-File in and of itself.

But I digress. People are dying of mb really high levels of pheromones caused by super mind-blowing sex. Sure. Also no one is sure if this killer is male or female. (They somehow manage to not even entertain the idea that any of the victims might have been gay, which I thought was an impressive feat of elephant avoidance.)

ANYWAY. Their investigation leads them to Massachusetts, where a bunch of sci-fi not-Amish people are chilling out doing not-Amish people things. Stuff kind of just snowballs from there. Mulder jumps down into the not-Amish people's ritual cellar with no backup and then proceeds to reprimand Scully for being reckless; Scully (for the first, but unfortunately not last time) almost bangs someone bc she is being manipulated due to some supernatural phenomenon; I laugh A LOT alone in my work office bc I had forgotten the stupid twist ending; and Nicholas Lea is a starving artist who has to take the roles he's offered if he ever wants to be bumped up to recurring character status. Sigh. Hustling the club scene used to be so simple...

Does someone die in the cold open: Yes. He is fucked to death. Or something.

Does Mulder present a slideshow: Yes! Of dead people! Who were fucked to death! Or something!

Does the evidence survive the investigation: The evidence doesn't even stay on this planet.

Whodunit: A horny alien cosplaying as a gender fluid Amish person. No, seriously.

Convictions: Zip.

Did they solve it: No. This is my very first explicit no with no qualifiers. They 1. did not figure out the cause of death definitively, 2. did not apprehend the suspect, 3. lost literally all of their evidence, and 4. the government wasn't even hiding anything this time, they just got outsmarted by some horny aliens and were left with nothing. In fact, I bet they actually know less now than when they started. Failure from top to bottom, guys, good work.

Hmm. It's something I've been wanting to add, but because being trans is pretty central to the experience of being a competitive athlete, I'm not entirely sure if I can commit to making sure I reflect that experience in the game.

Hence, to avoid adding something that feels "empty", I haven't added the option to the game yet (same for race/ethnicity).

It might help if I get an idea of what you guys expect when picking a trans MC—how should it affect the gameplay/text? If you have an opinion, do vote in the poll below, but also feel free to comment/send me a message to elaborate if you have more to say! Really appreciate the time.

Also, for folks that chose option 2 or 3: It would be helpful if you could let me know if you'd actually prefer that I don't include the option for MC to be trans if I don't eventually go with option 2 or 3 (meaning, option 2 / 3 or nothing, rather than option 1). Thanks for weighing in!!.

Explanation of the options below

Edit: By 'having an impact on gameplay', I mean having narrative differences / scenes that explore it further. E.g. Maybe an opponent comments on it in a match, and MCs have the option to either be bothered by it or to be fired-up to play even better to prove 'em wrong, and have teammates stand up for MC etc. Maybe MC gets to have a talk about being a trans athlete with someone they're close to.

On the other hand, having 1-2 occasions where characters talk about it would be less 'significant'/would be more like getting flavor text differences. E.g. When Rayyan talks to you about being POC, maybe you get an option to say hey I get it, I'm trans, I feel like I have to prove myself of being worthy all the time too~ or something like that.

And by 'choose it & have it be referenced' (the most basic option), I mean something one level below the above—maybe just a remark here or there by MC or a teammate etc. but no sig. difference to the text/choices etc

Taking estrogen could be the great experiment of my life. In spite of myself -- and perhaps contrary to models of transsexuality that would insist that I was already a feminine person in my mind, lacking only the tits to match -- I see it as a way of gaining insight into feminine libido, a topic that the entire world since the dawn of humanity has been obsessed with (while simultaneously dedicated to misunderstanding it). In the cissexist imaginary, there are two sexes: the hard, rough male sex, a highly directional blunt instrument that does all the desiring, and the soft, submissive female sex, a complex and mysterious creature who longs only to be desired.

What's curious and genuinely vexing about this binary is that my experience on hormones so far fits this stereotype pretty closely. I don't have much desire to engage in sex. Instead, I find myself craving affirmations that I am desirable. My sexual needs mostly look like needing to be read as a trans person (and not a man), and to be desired for it, to know that turns someone on. And I don't need to take my clothes off to get that; I can know it with a single glance in my direction. Chemically, my levels are those of a woman (actually, right now, I have less testosterone in my body than a cis woman -- and I suspect that's part of the story). I wasn't really expecting my libido to take as hard a hit as it has, because I privately doubted (and still do) that the mere act of taking HRT could give me the same experience that cis women have during and post puberty -- my libido will be by definition a transfeminine libido, and hence its own thing.

So imagine my shock when I suddenly become a tease, a 30-yo coquette with wide shoulders and a backache, the sort of flower that only the most deranged of bees would try to pollinate. This came as a surprise after a life spent reading feminist testimonials on the internet by women who were shamed for wanting sex too much, or who wanted it but rarely felt safe enough with any man to trust him. I'd always believed on some level that most ladies had a reasonable drive but different needs from men, hence, the preference many have towards reading smut rather than watching porn. That's the sort of transformed sex drive I could live with, actually, would greatly prefer to the inescapable lizard-brain appetite that for years made me feel like I couldn't have close friendships with women because I'd inevitably catch feelings.

But this newfound, borderline-asexuality? It feels quite different to the model I'd always held in my head.
