Story Idea

Telekinetic supervillain who REALLY loves historical architecture. Living in a superhero universe where heroes keep crashing through stained glass windows and leveling entire streets. As well as the normal corruption causing building to be demolished or “restored” in extremely destructive ways.

Kinda has Poison Ivy vibes, without any of the femme fatale trappings - her entire focus is preserving historical valuable buildings, and she doesn’t really care if humans that get in the way die. But she also isn’t going out of her way to kill people.

And the leader of the local superhero team can see where she’s coming from. And decides that just throwing her in jail every time she acts up is a sign they’re failing in their duty to protect the city. Instead, he starts trying to gain her trust. He doesn’t care that much about buildings, but he works on lessening his team’s collateral damage. He promises the supervillain that he’ll try to pressure the city government if she brings problems to him rather than taking them into her own hands. Eventually, he convinces her that she can protect the city’s infrastructure better by being on his team than she can on her own.

She’s incredibly helpful! She will keep burning buildings from collapsing until everyone can get out and the fire is extinguished. She’ll hold skyscrapers up while supervillains reign destruction down around them. She’ll deconstruct traps and grumpily direct her teammates towards the hidden mastermind who set them up. And when the crisis is over, she’ll see what can be salvaged and rebuild it if possible.

But she’s a PR nightmare.

Former Supervillain refuses to help people. She DOES NOT care. Your kid is trapped in the burning building? That is not her problem. Go bother someone else. Dude is holding a bunch of people hostage? It’s fine, he’s not causing any damage to the building he’s in.

People DO NOT like this attitude. People do not accept that she’s part of a team, and other heroes are capable of filling the “empathy” and “human rescuing” gaps.

And she’s high maintenance! The team frequently end up in situations where protecting lives is in conflict with protecting property. They take missions that mean very little to them, because they’re important to her. And the leader is constantly having to talk her out of rampages, pressuring the government to drop lucrative and unethical contracts, and making sure she’s sticking to the plan in the field. And she isn’t interested in interpersonal relationships or social niceties, so none of them are even doing this out of friendship!

Sometimes, you help someone not because they’ll be grateful, but because it will make your community better. Sometimes, you help the local drug addict not because he’s likely to turn his life around, but because he smashes less windows when he has a warm, quiet space to stay. And sometimes, keeping that community benefit takes a long term commitment.

I want to see a superhero team turn a villain as harm prevention and then willingly bear the cost of keeping that villain from causing harm. Not because it’s rewarding (though there are rewards) but because it’s more effective than any other method. And I want the villain to go along with it because the heroes actually found a more efficient way for her to reach her goals.

And it being messy for everyone, but I want them to make it work. And it to be worth it, in the end.

Actually, I think this does link in with a wider conversation that I have been thinking for a while Tumblr maybe needs to hear.

There's a common meme on this site now that no one here has any reading comprehension skills. The best one is, of course, the original "No offense but reading comprehension on this site is piss poor/How dare you say we piss on the poor" post, which gave rise to the nickname "pissing-on-the-poor website". There's also the "I like pancakes/How dare you say waffles are terrible" one. Both of these are great, because they're silly jokey ways to show two closely related phenomena that are probably the commonest ways to fail a reading comprehension check.

The first is someone reading certain catchphrases or buzzwords in the post, and based on their own biases or prior experiences or whatever else, their brain simply fills in what it reckons the poster is saying on the topic. Instead of reading the rest of the sentence and digesting it, the reader then just uses their assumption as the interpretation, and reacts to that.

The second is closely related, because it also uses biases and prior experiences to to interpret the post, but rather than ignoring what the OP is actually saying, it instead performs a series of gymnastic leaps to construct a whole new assertion on the OP's behalf that simply isn't there.

There's also a third, of course; that one is people being so eager to feel smug and superior over someone they perceive as Bad that they wilfully assume the OP is stupid or being serious when they're actually joking. And if the reader hadn't been so blinded by their desire to get to look down on someone, they'd have seen the very obvious tells, sometimes even including sentences like "Obviously this is a joke." (I think we have all seen examples of these. Also, in a bid to avoid as many reading comprehension fails here as possible, this does not include misunderstandings borne entirely of neurodiverse struggles to parse intentions; but, neurodiverse people are just as likely as neurotypicals to have ego play a part in their misinterpretation of others, and that is what this point is about.)

And the thing is... actually, we are all capable of any of these. I imagine a sizable chunk of people reading until this point were probably thinking "Lol, yeah, people are so stupid," but na, nage, I'm not having that. Literally everyone does these sometimes. And it becomes a particular risk when the topic under discussion is something that might brush against an issue that is a pressure point for you, like a social justice talking point that you are forever having to argue with internet strangers about, for example. Your brain holds schemas! And sometimes it likes to pattern match things before it deigns to tell you about its findings! And that can hit you right in the emotions, which if they are strong enough, really can shut down all rational thought.

But. This brings me to the real point of the post.

Because the thing is, we have all saddled up and gone to war under these conditions, or at the very least been strongly tempted to. And a vital skill that literally everyone has to learn, sooner or later, is:

Before you hit 'reply', double check the post to make sure you fucking understood it.

And that does not mean "simply re-read, confirm your bias, carry on." It means, "Is it possible to read this post from the point of view of someone who doesn't intend it the way I've taken it? If I put myself in the shoes of an innocent, could they still have written these words? Is there another interpretation for these phrases?"

And you do have to do this step. You simply do have to. Because if your desire is to 'clap back' and call someone a gargling knobskin made of garbage, fuck me sideways but you must see that it is imperative that you check if they actually deserve that kind of treatment first. You cannot spend your time claiming that we must all choose to be kind and then not bother doing your due diligence before screaming a person's various and assorted bigotries at them. If you misread it, and they were innocent - you are the raging aggressive cunt in this situation.

It does not matter that you reacted from an emotional place of normally having to defend yourself either, by the way. Sure, that makes the quality of your human soul better than that of the average Redditor who just enjoys anonymously hurting people, I guess? But it's also irrelevant. If you messaged someone and called them a misogynist because you performed several mental somersaults and landed on your own sore spot when they meant no such thing, you are the attacker. You owe them an apology. And yeah, sure, you can explain your over-reaction as the product of your normal experiences if you like, but that is only an explanation, not an excuse. You are still the asshole here. You still need to apologise and mean it.

And you could have avoided it if you'd done that due diligence, as you should have. If you're going to take a swing, make sure it's the right target. This was once described to me as donkey people - they don't think, they just kick. This is admittedly a little unkind to donkeys, who always do their due diligence, but I feel it's an apt metaphor.

TL;DR: If you feel moved to angrily reply to something, first make sure you've interpreted it right. Don't be a donkey person. And if you ask for clarification, people are innocent until proven guilty. Ask nicely. If they are a bigot, you can then smelt them for parts.

I realized the other day that the reason I didn't watch much TV as a teenager (and why I'm only now catching up on late aughts/early teens media that I missed), is because I literally didn't understand how to use our TV. My parents got a new system, and it had three remotes with a Venn diagram of functions. If someone left the TV on an unfamiliar mode, I didn't know how to get back to where I wanted to be, so I just stopped watching TV on my own altogether.

I explained all this to my therapist, because I didn't know if this was more related to my then-unnoticed autism, or to my relationship with my parents at the time (we had issues less/unrelated to neurodivergency). She told me something interesting.

In children's autism assessments, a common test is to give them a straightforward task that they cannot reasonably perform, like opening an overtight jar. The "real" test is to see, when they realize that they cannot do it on their own, if they approach a caregiver for help. Children that do not seek help are more likely to be autistic than those that do.

This aligns with the compulsory independence I've noticed to be common in autistic adults, particularly articulated by those with lower support needs and/or who were evaluated later in life. It just genuinely does not occur to us to ask for help, to the point that we abandon many tasks that we could easily perform with minor assistance. I had assumed it was due to a shared common social trauma (ie bad experiences with asking for help in the past), but the fact that this trait is a childhood test metric hints at something deeper.

My therapist told me that the extremely pathologizing main theory is that this has something to do with theory of mind, that is doesn't occur to us that other people may have skills that we do not. I can't speak for my early childhood self, or for all autistic people, but I don't buy this. Even if I'm aware that someone else has knowledge that I do not (as with my parents understanding of our TV), asking for help still doesn't present itself as an option. Why?

My best guess, using only myself as a model, is due to the static wall of a communication barrier. I struggle a lot to make myself understood, to articulate the thing in my brain well enough that it will appear identically (or at least close enough) in somebody else's brain. I need to be actively aware of myself and my audience. I need to know the correct words, the correct sentence structure, and a close-enough tone, cadence, and body language. I need draft scripts to react to possible responses, because if I get caught too off guard, I may need several minutes to construct an appropriate response. In simple day-to-day interactions, I can get by okay. In a few very specific situations, I can excel. When given the opportunity, I can write more clearly than I am ever capable of speaking.

When I'm in a situation where I need help, I don't have many of my components of communication. I don't always know what my audience knows. I don't have sufficient vocabulary to explain what I need. I don't know what information is relevant to convey, and the order in which I should convey it. I don't often understand the degree of help I need, so I can come across inappropriately urgent or overly relaxed. I have no ability to preplan scripts because I don't even know the basic plot of the situation.

I can stumble though with one or two deficiencies, but if I'm missing too much, me and the potential helper become mutually unintelligible. I have learned the limits of what I can expect from myself, and it is conceptualized as a real and physical barrier. I am not a runner, so running a 5k tomorrow does not present itself as an option to me. In the same way, if I have subconscious knowledge that an interaction is beyond my capability, it does not present itself as an option to me. It's the minimum communication requirements that prevent me from asking for help, not anything to do with the concept of help itself.

Maybe. This is the theory of one person. I'm curious if anyone else vibes with this at all.

“you will start this evening. miss karina needs her tea whenever she goes out on the balcony. i assume you know how to make tea?” she asked, eyes fixed on you expectantly.

“good.”

after explaining your duties, she handed you a uniform—a black dress that stopped just above your knees, with white cuffs and collar, and an apron trimmed with frilly edges.

“how unfortunate. i would have asked you to paint with me.” she said, turning back to the mirror.

then she paused again, looking at you through the reflection.

“be my muse.”

you froze, eyes wide, mouth hanging open before you could find the words.

“pardon?”

“be my muse. since you can’t paint.” karina said casually.

she stood up and walked to the spot where she usually painted. grabbing an empty canvas from the corner of the room, she settled it on the easel.

you remained frozen in place, like a statue, watching her prepare.

karina glanced at you, raising an eyebrow.

“do i have to drag you myself?” she asked.

you snapped out of it and quickly moved to where she wanted you to stand.

“there. perfect. don’t move.” she said, sitting on the stool.

you stood still for the entire afternoon. though it was uncomfortable and unpleasant, the way her eyes lingered on you made it worthwhile. you liked how she studied your features, how her gaze held you. you enjoyed the attention more than you expected.

the moon hung high when karina finally finished. you let out a sigh of relief, grateful to finally move. you reached out to peek at the painting, but karina held up a hand to stop you.

jae wook sighed, turning to face her. his eyes were dark, dull—not the ones she once loved.

“can you just leave me alone, karina? i don’t want you up my ass every single second!” he snapped, turning his back on her.

karina’s eyes glistened with tears. she bit her lip, trying to hold back a sob. without another word, she turned and hurried out of his office, running to her room.

"am i looking at a mirror right now?" you asked but what answered you was a beautiful melody.

karina laughed. she laughed. albeit short, it was soft, angelic, something that came from heaven. you wanted to hear it again.

your eyes tore off the canvas as you look at her, enchanted by her laugh.

there, a small smile rested on her lips. you made her smile. you made her laugh. you couldn't be prouder.

"what do you think?" she finally asks.

you look back at the painting. you were looking at yourself. a portrait of you so beautifully painted, your features perfectly captured.

"miss karina, this is breathtaking! you really are blessed with such talent!" you exclaimed, stepping closer to examine the painting.

karina felt her lips twitch upward upon hearing your words. something unfamiliar swelled in her heart, it made her happy, seen, recognized, acknowledged.

she rests a hand on where her heart is, unsettled with such unfamiliar feeling.

then you heard it—faint voices. a man’s voice, loud and angry.

you sprang to your feet, pressing your ear against the door.

“i told you it’s nothing!”

he ran a hand through his hair in frustration, jaw clenched tight as he bit back the words threatening to escape.

“i had a rough day, karina. don’t start." he said, then stormed past her, his footsteps heavy and angry.

karina stayed rooted in place, eyes cast downward, until the sharp slam of a door made her flinch.

her fists clenched tightly as tears welled up in her eyes. she padded down to her room, slamming the door shut behind her as she slid down with her back against it, sitting on the cold tiled floor, letting her emotions spill free.

she hugged her knees, resting her head on her arms, trying to muffle her sobs.

then a faint knock echoed through the room. she paused.

“miss karina?”

it was your voice.

karina wiped at her tears with one hand while the other shuffled to open the door.

when the door opened, she was met with your worried face.

“miss karina? are you okay? i heard the doors slamming and thought something happened.” you said softly, your voice gentle.

you saw her red, swollen eyes, the faint traces of tears still glistening. her lips, chapped and red from crying, looked almost too tender.

karina closed the door behind you and then wrapped you in a tight hug, burying her face in your shoulder as her body trembled with muffled sobs.

you stood frozen for a moment, unsure what to do.

then your hands moved—one patting a slow, comforting rhythm on her back, the other gently stroking her hair.

when her body stopped trembling and her breathing calmed, you lifted her in her arms. she was surprisingly light, making it easy for you to tuck her in bed. 

you left her room as quiet as you can after making sure karina was comfortably asleep. taking one last look at her now peaceful face, you closed the door softly. 

walking back to your room, you paused just outside jae wook’s office, eyeing the closed door before resuming your way to your room.

karina sat by the glass doors leading to the pool, staring at the water as her mind drifted. jae wook had left before she could even talk to him. she had just learned from the driver that he’d gone out of town for a business trip.

she didn’t believe it.

her eyes followed the moon’s reflection dancing on the water’s surface. then she looked up as donna passed by and called her.

“please call yn.”

donna nodded and hurried off to fetch you.

you rushed over as soon as donna told you karina had requested you.

karina looked at you, a small smile gracing her lips when she saw you.

“i feel like taking a swim tonight.” she said, standing up.

“i’ll go prepare your swimsuit." you said, turning to leave, but karina stopped you.

“no need.” she slid open the glass door and stepped outside.

you watched her helplessly before following.

then, without warning, she slipped off her silk robe, letting it fall to the ground.

your eyes widened at the sight, cheeks flushing, ears probably turning red.

karina wore a black silk nightgown that stopped just mid-thigh. her milk-like skin glowing softly under the moonlight.

you quickly looked away, your mouth suddenly dry from the unexpected sight.

then you heard a splash. you glanced back—and immediately wished you hadn’t.

karina emerged from the water, wet hair slicked back, the nightgown clinging to her figure.

“come join me.” she said, pulling you out of your trance.

It isn't the case that suffering from racism makes a people more noble or connected inherently, it's just that the people who are able to survive centuries of slavery and subjugation are the ones who developed particular strategies for doing so, and have the skills to do so.

white people in contrast (especially rich and highly assimilated ones) live a relatively more insulated existence where they are protected from the direst consequences of social failures, so they never have to develop those keen social skills. a mistake doesn't get them killed or imprisoned, just looked down upon, or maybe even taken care of. their feelings are catered to and they are allowed to avoid discomfort as much as possible. they can often buy their way out of problems and uncomfortable situations, or buy their kids' way out of them. and because of their wealth, they don't lean on large communities but rather withdraw from them in order to protect their wealth and status. this makes them interpersonally very weak but structurally very strong.

Everyone seemed to be eager to catch him off-guard, eager to see the "real" side of him, eager to witness him lose his cool.

She had caught on to his nervous tells early on in their relationship. It was subtle at first, just a hint of a tremor in his voice when he cleared it before speaking, or the way he'd swipe his palms against his pants when he was about to be interviewed, even the way he would shift from side to side slightly when he felt uncomfortable. But over the course of their two years together, she had learned to read him like a book.

He would never admit it out loud to anybody but her, but Joe was terrified of letting his guard down. Between the never-ending carousel of guests, Joe would find himself glancing in the direction of the entrance, hoping the line would soon thin out and she would be by his side - where she was supposed to be. The hour reserved for check-in seemed to drag on with Robin and Jimmy occasionally stepping in to take some of the conversational weight off him. He loved them for it, he really did, but all he wanted was her comforting presence, her hand in his, her laugh in his ear.

Finally, she appeared, looking absolutely radiant in a simple white sundress that contrasted with her brown skin, her hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail, and a small black handbag in her hand. She made her way through the crowd, a vision of confidence and grace that made Joe's chest tighten. She had that special glow about her today, something that seemed to have been amplified by the excitement of the event.

Her eyes met his and he couldn't bring himself to focus on what the shorter, gray-haired man in front of him was saying. Everything around him blurred into a muffled murmur. She was everything he wasn't in social settings: poised, articulate, natural, and absolutely magnetic. As she approached, Joe felt his body relax, his breathing even out, and a small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. She was by his side in an instant, taking her rightful place as she handed him a chilled bottle of water.

His hand gravitated to her waist, and he felt a wave of comfort wash over him as she leaned in slightly, her hand brushing against his back. He could feel his back straighten, his shoulders ease, and his breath deepen. The familiar warmth of her body began to ground him, bringing him back to the present, and reminding him that he was more than capable of remaining in control.

"George, Tim, this is my girlfriend," Joe introduced, his voice steady as he finally had the strength to redirect his focus to the guests. He watched with a proud smile as she offered the two men her hand for a handshake, easygoing greetings of "Nice to meet you," and "Thank you for coming," leaving her soft lips.

She tucked back into his side in an instant, her free hand coming up to rest between his shoulder blades, his hand wrapped around her waist once more. They made small talk with George and Tim, who both looked at Joe with a knowing smile, nodding their heads in approval at the mention of her name. Though they wouldn't have guessed it before she appeared by his side, they could see his nerves smooth out, his shoulders drop, and the tension in his jaw ease.

"So, how long have you two been together?" George inquired, sipping his drink and looking at the couple with genuine curiosity.

Joe's gaze flickered to her, a hint of a smile playing on his lips as he replied, "Two years now."

Her eyes sparkled with affection as she listened to Joe speak, her thumb idly tracing patterns on his back. "It'll be three years in August," she added, clarifying gently.

Tim, the taller of the two, chuckled and said, "Well, Joe, you're getting closer to the big 3-0. Maybe it's time to start thinking about settling down? I think you've got a pretty good candidate by your side. My wife was raving about her when they were setting up the check-in."

Joe felt his cheeks warm slightly, but the smile didn't leave his face. "I've already started planning, actually," he responded, surprising even himself with his decisiveness. Her hand stilled its motion on his back, her eyes widening in shock as she turned her face to meet his eye.

"Oh, really?" she asked, her voice a mix of surprise and amusement. "That's news to me."

Joe felt a twinge of panic, realizing he had spoken before thinking. But the look on her face wasn't one of annoyance or upset; her eyes sparkled with excitement and anticipation. He took a deep breath and said, "Well, I mean, I've been thinking about it. We've got a good thing going, and I can't see my future without you in it."

That was the truth. He often found himself wondering what life with her could look like beyond football. The dream with the white picket fence, curly-haired kids playing in the yard, her standing in the kitchen with a baby on her hip and a smile on her face when she welcomed him home. It was a picture that had started to form in his mind more and more often in the quiet moments between games and practices. At times, he questioned how he managed to be motivated to do anything that wasn't football before her - couldn't fathom how he managed to exist before her.

Her smile grew wider. "Is that so?" she said, raising an eyebrow playfully. "Very interesting."

Tim and George laughed heartily, their faces reddening with good cheer as they slapped Joe on the back. "Good for you, Joe," George exclaimed. "You're going to need someone like her to keep you grounded in this crazy world. Good luck, you two."

The conversation flowed around them as they found themselves in the middle of the bustling golf clubhouse. The air was filled with the chatter of excitement and the clinking of glasses as people mingled and shared stories. She leaned closer to Joe, whispering, "So, you're planning our future, without my input?" Her voice was teasing, but her eyes searched his, looking for a hint of what he might be feeling.

Joe looked down at her, the corner of his mouth quirking up. "Well, I figured you'd be okay with it, given that you're a big part of it," he replied, trying to keep his tone light despite the sudden seriousness that had entered their conversation. The room felt warmer, and not just from the bodies packed into the space. "I want to do this right, babe. I want to make sure you're happy, that we're both ready."

Her expression softened, and she leaned in to kiss his cheek, the gesture unseen by the surrounding guests. "Joey," she whispered, "you always make sure I'm happy. I'm ready for whatever comes next, whenever it comes."

I'm really stewing on the fact that there are people out there who genuinely believe that testosterone just magically makes trans men's voices cis passing without any voice training and only trans women "have to" train their voices to pass.

It like. Viscerally upsets me actually.

I was on testosterone when I was studying acting and I had to do voice training the whole time for two reasons:

1. So my voice didn't break on stage / I didn't damage my vocal chords while they were changing.

2. So I could learn how to speak with my chest voice, because I was socialized to speak with my head voice.

Not speak using my diaphragm — you can resonate from most places and still support yourself using your diaphragm — but speak using my chest, because on average cis men speak from their chests and throats whereas on average cis women speak from their throats and heads* and I was going to be playing otherwise cis men on stage. (*this is fairly cultural)

The way you are taught to speak is a facet of learned gender performance. When you are transitioning, regardless of how you are transitioning, you are often expected to unlearn the way you were taught to speak and relearn the "correct" way of speaking that aligns with your gender presentation because if you speak "incorrectly" it outs you!!

Personally? Now I like talking in the way that feels most comfortable for me, and for me that is with my head voice. On a good day, that gets me targeted as a faggot. On a bad day gets me targeted as a woman who is Wrong, because people will hear my voice, then see my facial hair, and that puts me in danger.

When I am not in an environment I know I am safe in, modify my voice for safety. I have trained myself to modulate my voice for other reasons, but I have used those skills to protect myself, just like many other trans people regardless of identity.

Being cis passing is not important for everyone — I am literally one of those people for which it is not very important on a personal level. However I am talking about expectations that are placed on trans people so they pass as cis and the things trans people do to achieve safety and/or gender euphoria in a violent anti-trans cis society.
