The first aid competition, I've been studying for the last couple of weeks, is on this weekend, so I started to pack my suitcase today. We'll leave tomorrow afternoon and arrive sometime in the evening. The theory part will be on Saturday (wish me luck). The competition is in Leipzig (pretty cool city) and I'm looking forward to the weekend because at the same time I can have fun with my friends from our team. I hope all the studying will pay off!

god damn it my library doesn’t have any Czech grammar books. Guess I might have to order one cause I’m struggling to find online resources that aren’t YouTube videos (I like have articles / books as reference materials so I don’t have to skip through a YouTube video to try to find the chart I want)

i love that viktor is czech i love everything about it. my favourtie is when jayvik people make him call jayce a "dobrý chlapec" because they used google translate i love you so much everybody.....
a little guide on calling jayce a "good boy" in czech: "dobrý chlapec" is kinda like calling him a "sensible young man" skjdfh. "dobrý" is a very literal translation of "good", its use is like "good day, everybody", not like "a well-behaved dog". "chlapec" is super formal, it's like how heimerdinger calls people "my boy", not like anything familial or intimate.
you might want to probably use "hodný kluk", literally translating to "kind boy" or "nice boy", closer to what we use for praise. (a more casual version is "hodnej kluk", as i can't imagine they'd use formal czech in the lanes.) he could even just say "hodný"/"hodnej", as we often use just the adjective for nicknames and such. (if you ever see a slavic character call someone "hey, [adjective] one!" that's what that is, english is weird with this aslkh)
that being said: there is nothing wrong with using google translate!!! it's incredibly sweet nonetheless, i really don't mind any mistakes ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡ i grew up learning english in fandom so i know first hand how hard it is :]

If i may give one (1) tip to A0-A2 learners of Slavic Languages:
Study both verb aspect forms from the get-go.
Slavic languages have a grammatical category called 'verbal aspect' which, simply put, expresses either that you are/were/will be in the process of doing something (imperfective aspect) or that you have or will have gotten a certain result (perfective aspect).
What do I mean by 'study them from the get-go':
Personally I use Anki (beloved) for vocabulary study, but I guess you can apply this to whatever suits you best.
Russian example sentence in the text book: "Вчера я купил яблоки." [Včerá ja kupíl jáblka. Yesterday I bought apples.]
In the vocab list* I find the infinitive of купил [kupíl; bought]: купить [kupít'; to buy].
I head over to wiktionary and type in the search bar the infinitive form and hit enter. You should now see something like this:
Tumblr media
What we're looking for is the 'Verb' section, and, specifically, that first line of the paragraph that mentions the infinitive, an abbreviation for its aspect [ipf. = imperfective, pf. = perfective] and, in brackets, the 'opposite' verbal aspect. In this example, we learn that купить has the perfective aspect, and its imperfective equivalent is покупать [pokupát'].
This is how I structure my Anki card then:
Tumblr media
(german is my mother tongue so it's russian - german - spanish. the latter is there just as a reminder for myself, please ignore lol)
I always put the imperfective form on the left - then slash - then perfective form. I highly recommend to maintain a consistent order.
How I study:
So, our textbook example mentioned only one form. That is the one I am going to be studying actively. Meaning: When the card 'to buy' pops up, I try to remember only the word that came up in class/read in the textbook etc., in this case купить. I turn the card and check if I got it right, then read both forms (optional, but helpful: read them aloud).
What this does is that it familiarises you with both aspect forms without putting the pressure of learning twice as much vocabulary on you.
You will have to learn both aspects at some point, but it will be so much easier when you're already actively familiar with one form and passively familiar with the other. I started doing this during my second semester and it was SO WORTH IT.
Let me know if you have any questions or if this was helpful to you! <3
*in absence of a vocab list, I use this website for Russian and this website for Czech. you can type the exact verb form as you encounter it (in this example купил) and it will show you the entire conjugation table. extremely useful to have at hand

I literally try not to chuckle when I hear someone say they want to learn Czech😭 like, it’s one of the hardest languages (I’m gonna scare y’all with the letter Ř because I can) and even most of the Czechs I’ve met can’t even really speak their own language (including me) so I think it’s really hard for a non-Czech speaker to learn it💀 (I admire the Vietnamese people that learn Czech just to sell some random stuff all over Czechia) (maybe I’m gonna do another post about Vietnamese people in Czechia later) (man I love yapping about my country idgaf if I’m just being annoying with it)
If y’all don’t believe me I have a proof

youtube
Also here y’all have czech memes cuz why not (not made by me btw)

Are Czech People… Cold?
One of the things that foreigners seem to struggle with in the Czech Republic, is that Czech people can appear to be quite cold and distant. You might even think that they look at you like they have something against you.
Do not worry, this is simply the “Czech public spaces resting bitch face” (as I like to call it). When you walk on a street or take public transportation do not expect Czech people to smile. Most won't and are not fond of small talk with absolute strangers either. However, this is nothing personal against you. Czech people are actually very warm and welcoming, once you get to interact with them on a deeper level. It’s just that we do not waste our smiles on strangers, but reserve them for people we hold dear.
So the next time a Czech person looks like they have a personal vendetta against you when you say hi to them in an elevator, just remember, they are probably thinking about how many rohlíky they should buy in Lidl.
Sincerely, a Czech person
