Dick and Cass held their shot glasses of lemon juice, both preparing to drink. However, as Dick took his shot, he was met with a splash of lemon juice right in his eye.

Dick yelped, clutching his citric acid blinded eye. His face turned bright red enraged.

Cass: Got you, sucker!

With a mischievous giggle, Cass dashed off, leaving Dick momentarily blinded. Enraged, he grabbed a frying pan but had to stop himself before losing control.

Dick (jumping up and down, speaking Filipino): Bakit mo gagawin yun! Bakit mo gagawin yun! Lord, bigyan mo ako ng lakas!

Translation: Why would you do that?! Why would you do that?! Lord, give me strength!

Cass (using Tim as a human shield): I was feeling a little mischievous today. You can't hit me! Dad will side with me!

Cass stuck her tongue out and took off laughing, with Dick hot on her heels. Tim quickly swiped the frying pan away from Dick.

Tim: They have the oddest sibling dynamic… You guys are both older than me! Act like it!

What If? is the question that drives most retellings. This works best with the well-known fairy tales. Everyone knows the original story, so readers will be interested in how you twist it.

You can change

Plot: What if Cinderella didn't go to the ball?

Character: What if Snow White was evil?

Setting/Genre: What if Sleeping Beauty was set on a spaceship?

Theme: What if Beauty and the Beast was about family love instead of romance?

There's a variation of the plot What If? that asks:

What's Next?: What happens after Cinderella marries the prince?

In this case, you're writing a sequel. The fairy tale is backstory, and your story is something new.

There's also a mash-up What If? that asks:

What if these two stories were combined?: What if the prince in Cinderella was also the Beast in Beauty and the Beast?

Here, the readers are pulled through the story because they want to see how the plot and characters of these stories fit together into something new.

In all these cases, What If? is the question that motivates your readers. They want to see how your changes make for a different story.

With traditional retellings, you have to ask different questions. You want to tell a story with the same plot, characters, and setting as the original--maybe because you love the original story so much, maybe because you're retelling an obscure tale. But then what's the point of your story? What question are you going to answer in a way that can't be satisfied by reading the original tale?

The questions that work best here are:

Why?: In fairy tales, things usually happen "just because". There's very little explanation of why events happen a certain way or why characters act the way they do. Asking Why? allows your story to give an answer that explains confusing or ambiguous points in the original story.

Who?: Fairy tales don't dig very deeply into the psychology of their characters. A retelling allows you to enter into the perspective of one of the characters and explore what it would be like to live through the events of the story. What kind of person acts the way this character does? What fears and hopes motivate them? What do they think about the events of the story?

There's a variation of Who? that asks:

Who is telling the story?: This is your classic POV switch. Your story can have the same plot, setting, and characters as the original, but if you focus on the viewpoint of someone other than the traditional main character--the love interest, the villain, a side character, a confused bystander--you can wind up with a very different, sometimes almost entirely original story.

Almost every retelling needs to answer at least one Why? question. Even if it's a minor plot point, your story should offer a clarification or a rationale behind some element of the original. Asking Who? is a great way to expand upon the fairy tale and make it something more psychologically complex. First-person point-of-view is very helpful in this case, because it instantly adds something new to your telling of the story, even if you follow every beat of the original tale.

What If? retellings also need to answer Why? and Who?, but they're not the driving force in the same way that they have to be for traditional retellings. What If? allows for a twist that's the driving force behind the story, but when you're not changing anything, the depth that Why? and Who? provide is crucial to making your story feel new.

After a few months of lowkey art block I got the urge/inspiration to start planning the next Jedi temple adventure game thing. I put it off because 1. I was previously considering doing my classroom setting first, and 2. My previous attempts at either setting was intimidating because even though I can technically do backgrounds… they’re hard.

But I really really want to draw the Room of a Thousand Fountains again (or at least a section of it 😅) so even though it’s intimidating I’m gonna try it.

I’ve got an idea of what some of the NPCs will say. I need to arrange the features so that (if this was an actual game) the character has space to move around, and I want to focus on making the scene pretty and soothing (nice shapes and colors). I also would like the water and plants to move a little and do some idle animations for the NPCs, and maybe have the occasional birds or fish appear. 🥲 which is so much work, we’ll see if I can manage it. 🤞

Been obsessing over Diana x Rick au scenarios where they get together, for some reason I’ve been really leaning into them knowing each other growing up, parting ways, and then meeting and dating in the future

Diane and Rick being across the street neighbors who have huge crushes on each other

They never end up confessing to each other because Rick feels like he has to “prove” himself to Diane before he can confess to each other (stemming from fear of rejection) so he wants to set out and really make something of himself

Diane never confesses because she has abandonment issues and everyone knows that genius Rick Sanchez isn’t going to stay in their dinky hometown, and she doesn’t believe that it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved, losing him after having him would devastate her

So Rick gets accepted into his dream college while Diane stays in their hometown, knowing she’s going to remember him for the rest of her life but not expecting him to ever return, just to one day get surprised when Rick returns, as was always his goal

That’s the basic outline I’ve been using for all scenarios, just tweaking it a bit based on my mood, but somehow it’s devolved into:

Rick coming back and finding out he never properly sealed away the lab in his house and some of his specimens have gotten out and it’s had far reaching consequences for the town

Diane’s been having fun with it, because it’s more gravity falls level of issues than like an undead apocalypse, but Rick’s responding like Frankenstein seeing his monster actually move around

Fiona and Cake spoilers seriously

(Something I noticed abt Betty and Simons relationship)

I love Betty and Simon’s relationship, I think their back story is so cute and romantic and all that lovely stuff don’t get me wrong.

But there’s this under tone of Betty constantly giving things up for Simon and we don’t really talk about it a lot???

Like, Betty let Simon have his moment with the artifact and the pubic, she also doesn’t go to her trip in favor of going on an expedition with Simon. Then when she goes to leave again she stays for Simon.

Even Fiona is like “you went with her on the bus?” And Simon just looks all confused like “what? No, why would I do that?” Like- hello???

Then after that she gave up her entire life and mind to get Simon back to the point where she literally says “I don’t know who I am without him anymore.” And that just sucks! Since the beginning Betty has been the one giving up the most, her mind, her own possible career, and it’s a story of love of course and it’s very sweet but it’s also a story of sacrifice.

Their love wasn’t a perfect solution, it was already sort of imbalanced when it started and I lowkey love how we see those cracks even before they’re together.

Again, I love their relationship and I think it’s sweet. I just think we should talk about Betty’s side more, especially when she tells a story of what most women do in relationships, sacrifice.
