Sometimes before I have to tuck into a big job with a bad deadline, I need to mentally prepare myself with a few warm up sketches before hand to loosen the ol’ noggin.
They’re quick and messy, but make me giggle! It’s the sugar that makes the medicine go down.

Cricket Cat concept. Do you see it? Do you see my vision? I don't think they'd purr or meow, just chirp with their wings.

i think you got to love the life we share this planet with. or at least appreciate it and don't revel in killing it.
there are so many creatures that may not look nice, may carry diseases and may be parasites. but they are each so unique and incredible in the way they have evolved, formed and survived.
you can't be mad at them for living in the same planet as you. or so i think.
#i'm not saying don't use pesticides or the like#but. don't revel on the killing of creatures just cause they scare you or are ugly#i'm very scared. terrified tbh of grasshoppers#that don't mean i'll go try and crush them or take their wings or legs off or other horrible things i've heard from some people

Sorry can’t go out tonight, busy thinking about that one animal blorbo is frequently compared to in canon
#One day I’ll reread tid and tally up how many times Charlotte is compared to a bird and how many times Henry is compared to a puppy#Actually it’s so amusing to me that both those two are compared to the aforementioned animals multiple times by multiple people#But none of the other TID characters are compared to a certain animal in that manner#At least not that I remeber? Could be wrong#Have I mentioned my silly animal traits au that I came up with forever ago#Not a writing thing actually it was a drawing thing between me and like two other people#The most important thing is that if will was an animal he would be a grasshopper#I have at least two or three notebooks with doodles of Will herondale with grasshopper legs

need a bi4bi t4t m/f pairing where the girl is a giant freak and not in the "cute manic pixie" way but in the "unethical experiments in my fucked up laboratory" way and the guy is a golden retriever who thinks he can fix her. and he brings her cute bento lunches and she's like "bradley shut up put on your fucking gloves and hold this possum down so i can graft these giant grasshopper legs to it"

Sketches up an idea for an evil 18th cent foppish locust guy.
I like all the anthro and furry art I see. Unfortunately my favorite living things do not lend themselves well to be anthro. .. He wound up kind of like a locust-satyr instead. Inspired a bit by the james and the giant peach's mr grasshopper. (the terminology between locust and grasshopper is really interesting..))
#bug#insect#I always liked how mr grasshopper's wings were used as an extension of the coat tails#my sketches#bug art#bug anthro#i find it very hard... to make bug furries. mammals and reptiles/birds lend themselves better to it i feel#i keep on being like 'well i want hair for fashion. and eyebrows and a regular mouth to draw understandable emotions'#and then.. before u know it nothing much of the bug remains..#my favorite thing to do when drawing fictional bugs: is have their walking legs come out of the thorax!!!

↳ Love in the Shadows of Parenthood.
A Twisted Wonderland × Youth-Parent! Reader.
Chapters: Heartslabyul (here). Savanaclaw. Octavinelle. Scarabia. Pomefiore. Ignihyde. Diasomnia.
Characters Included: Riddle Rosehearts, Trey Clover, Cater Diamond, Deuce Spade, and Ace Trappola.
Prompt: "What of their S/O had a child before being with them?"
Possible trigger warning: Teenage pregnancy (all), Reader's ex leaving them to be a single mom (Riddle, Trey, Ace), and parental abandonment (Ace).
●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●~●
❤️ When you first arrived in Twisted Wonderland, Riddle thought that the child you had by your side was your younger sibling. Oh, how shocked he was when you told him it was your son, Charles. ❤️ He asked you many questions; who the father was, how young you were when you had him, etc.
❤️ Riddle was surprised that you had him only two years prior; you would've been fifteen years old! But, when he heard about how your ex left you after finding out, he was beyond upset. His face began turning red, but calmed down when he heard your son giggling at his face. ❤️ When you guys finally got into a relationship, he pledged to always be there for you and your son. He knew his mother wouldn't approve of your son, and therefore relationship, but Riddle could care less at that point. ❤️ He takes care of Charles when you need to study or some time to rest. As he has no younger siblings of his own, and was never really around other kids, he does get some help from Trey.
Riddle smiled softly, lifting the spoon and making a plane noise as he moved the utensil in a zigzag motion. Charles, giggling with his eyes sparkling as they followed the food, opened his mouth and swallowed the yogurt given to him.
You walked in the kitchen, seeing your son in his homemade-high chair, and chuckled quietly. Jack, who volunteered to go with you to grab stuff for your son, stood behind you and chuckled just like you.
"He really does love Charles, doesn't he?" He asked.
You nodded in reply. Turning around to look into Jack's eyes, you asked if he could bring your stuff for Charles to your room. He nodded and took the two sacks from your hands and walked down the halls towards the room Riddle had given you. After all, he knows it's not smart to have a child and young mother in a run-down building. Who knows what could happen.
Looking back into the kitchen, you take a breath and walk inside. Stopping behind your son, you picked him up. He squealed and laughed as you nuzzled your nose into his belly and blew raspberries into the plump skin.
"How's my little prince?" You asked, baby talking the young boy and kissing his face all over.
"He's been perfect. He hasn't thrown a fit once. Though, he did throw a block at Ace."
"Deserved?"
"I suppose."
Chuckling, you tucked Charles on one of your arms and wrapped the other arm underneath Riddle's arms and held him close. Riddle did the same to you and kissed the side of your head.
This feels right. He thought. This is right.
🧁 Trey was one of the most welcoming when he saw the young child behind your leg. He walked up to you both and held out his hand, shaking yours and hers before asking for your names. 🧁 He absolutely adores your daughter, Carroll. He loves to bake things with her help. As you're both the same age, he was shocked to hear you had Carroll so young, as she was four and you were eighteen. 🧁 The one thing they baked the most together was, funnily enough, the first thing he learned to baked with his own parents; brownies. Specifically, Grasshopper brownies and S'mores brownies. 🧁 Everyone in Heartslabyul, and throughout the school, believed you guys were dating before you actually started a relationship. So, when you actually told the others, they normally replied with, "Wait... you guys weren't dating before?" 🧁 Trey finds it funny himself, you just flush and look away. 🧁 When Trey asked you about your pregnancy with Carroll, you pushed him back, saying it was normal and nothing was wrong. Trey did not think it was the truth, but understood you probably just didn't want to talk about it. So, he put it to the side for another time.
You laid in bed alongside Trey, his arms around your waist as he spooned you from behind. Carroll was with Yuu for the night, as she wanted to spend some time with her 'Uncle Yuu'.
Trey rubbed the back of your hand and kissed the side of your head, before asking if he could ask you a possibly sensitive question. You hummed and nodded, wondering what he wanted to ask that was sensitive.
"What was it like with Carroll? You've shown me the photos of Carroll throughout the years, but I've never seen her father in them. Where is he?"
Your eyes looked down and your body curled into itself and you shakily sighed. "He... left. I was pregnant at fourteen, we didn't plan it to happen. So, when I told him... he flipped out and left. Never saw him again."
Trey's face became filled with a mixture of anger, disappointment, and sorrow. He knew how important it was to have a father in your life. He doesn't know what he would've been like without his own father, he taught him so much.
"That's horrible." He replied.
"Yeah, but it was honestly a better option... he wasn't the best guy.
"Honestly..." You dragged off. "I'd rather you be there for her than him."
The warm mustard eyes you loved widened in surprise. You wanted him to help raise Carroll? He smiled calmly and tilted your head so you could look into one another's eyes. Once he caught your sight, he kissed your nose.
"Sweet Sevens, I love you." He said.
"I love you too, Trey."
💎 Cater adored your daughter so much! He found her to be so cute! And the way that you stood up to the role of being the main parent of your family just amazed him. 💎 While he normally does take photos of anything he wants without any issue, Cater does understand that you don't appreciate having your child placed everywhere all at once. This is because of your parents, you told him. 💎 So, anytime he wants to take a photo, he asks if he is allowed to post it. It's rare, but sometimes you allow it. When you do, his eyes light up with sparkles. 💎 Whenever he posts Hattie on his socials, he gives her three different unique tags: #CayCay'sbb'sbb #MadameHatsalot and #HattieDiamond. 💎 It shocked you when he put down Hattie Diamond as a tag, and it shocked everyone else. While yes, Cater is seen as a fun and go-with-the-flow seeming guy, they did not expect him to be this chill. 💎 If you guys ever had a family day at Night Raven College, you best believe his father is claiming Hattie as his granddaughter and his sisters claim her as their niece.
"Cater!" Two girls scream as they run towards your boyfriend. Cater jumped, nearly falling to the ground as his sisters gripped him in a group hug.
You knew he wasn't huge on the whole 'physical touch' thing, but you understood how he wanted to keep his sisters happy. He did love them after all. They were his family. Despite the things he could, and had, said about that.
An older man walked up behind them and glanced at you, looked at his three kids and looked back at you. "You must be Cater's girlfriend, am I correct?"
You stiffen under his gaze, he was banker after all. Brains was something he must use quite often.
"Yes." You replied.
"And this must be your daughter, Hattie." He added. His eyes lit up slightly, nearly matching Professor Trein's when he first held your daughter, as he was reminded of his own children.
Hattie smiled and laughed, moving her stuffed rabbit around.
Cater's sisters began to tear up from the cuteness. "Cater, she has your little rabbit plush! I remember when we gave you that. Oh, you were such an adorable little guy."
"Still are!" His other sister chimed in.
You laughed slightly, trying to signal to Cater that you wanted to get a move on and not be in the middle of the hall talking to his, now as you agreed, slightly overbearing family.
Cater stood straight and wrapped an arm around your shoulders and smiled at his father and sisters. You knew it was a forced one, but they seemingly could not. "How about we all go to the front lawn? I'm sure it'd be better talking there than here."
"That sounds wonderful, son." Mr. Diamond replied, motioning for him to lead the way.
"I'm gonna blow a fuse if those two even think about dressing Hattie up like they did me..." You heard Cater mumble.
You smiled and kissed his cheek, a silent saying that you were there, and nothing bad was going to happen while you were around.
♠️ Deuce isn't the best with kids. This is mainly due to his past as a delinquent. But, when he does spend more time around you and your son, he gets better with handling the multiple situations his own mother went through with him. ♠️ Speaking of his mother, Deuce does call and message his mom a lot. During these conversations, he ends up talking about you and the toddler a lot. She finds it adorable. ♠️ When she sees photos of the three of you together, she tears up with pride and joy for the two of you. She would call you guys her babies, and your child her grandson, much like Cater's family. ♠️ Anytime Cater takes a photo of Lewis, Deuce likes to have them sent to him and you immediately. In fact, the background on his phone is a picture of you and Lewis laying down with one another in the middle of Heartslabyul's maze. ♠️ During the White Rabbit Fest, he entertained your son happily while you took a break to speak with his mother. She just watched with a laugh as you took pictures of the two together.
"You know, it's really nice to see Deuce helping someone out." Dylla spoke.
You nodded, opening the photos app on your phone to find the folders of pictures you had taken of Deuce and Lewis in the past few months of being together.
Dylla looked at your screen and began practically cackling when she saw a photo of her son dressed up like a dragon and playing with you, the princess, and your son, the knight.
"That's so cute!" She said, her cheeks flushing slightly as she laughed harder and harder.
"I know!"
Hearing steps behind you, you looked behind to see Epel and Grim there with Yuu. The three began laughing even harder than Dylla when they saw the many photos of Deuce playing around like the father he was.
"Deuce!" Epel yelled, catching the blue-haired man's attention. "What's with the eyeliner?"
Deuce's eyes widened and his cheeks reddened. Turning towards you with embarrassment written all over his face, you took another photo and marked it; White Rabbit Festival? More like Pink Rabbit Festival.
🪅 Ace was shocked to see a baby girl in your arms. You had twirled around the blue flames and tried to calm her down as Grim ravaged the room; a horrible first impression of Twisted Wonderland. 🪅 He was even more shocked when Riddle had assigned Trey and him in charge of Alice while you, Riddle, and Deuce were away for the Masquerade at Noble Bell College. 🪅 While away, you constantly messaged him and Trey, wondering if Alice was being to much for them and if you needed to come back. Trey chuckled and said you were just having a normal 'motherly reaction', as you were scared for Alice being away from you. Or rather, you being away from Alice for too long. 🪅 When you got back, everyone noticed how much more energy you were expunging paying attention to Alice. While some found it brave and very mature for your age, others wondered if something happened in your past with her. 🪅 Among the people wondering was Ace.
"Hey, what's going on over here?" Ace said, cocking an eyebrow and moving to sit beside you. Alice was playing with some of the animals and Lilia, who took a lot of joy watching over her.
"Just... observing." You nervously voiced.
Ace looked over and saw how Lilia played with Alice carefully yet care-freely. He knew you did that sometimes, but you had a tendency to be more careful than the other.
"It looks more like your watching them like a mama bear."
"I'm not a mama bear!" You rebutted, only for Ace to roll his eyes and wrap an arm around your shoulders.
"Seriously, you are. Why?"
Your eyes widened slightly and you looked down at your slightly broken phone. It had only had a scratch from Grim when you had to bathe him, but it still wound be considered by this world's tech as broken.
"Nothing."
"Bull. Be honest."
Sighing, you curled in on yourself slightly. Leaning into his chest, your mind flashed with memories. The man and woman that had raised you leaving. Shouting. Calling you all kinds of names.
"My parents..." Ace's eyebrows furrowed and his looked down at you, worry hidden in his eyes as he motioned for you to continue. That he wasn't going to leave you.
"They left me in the care of my aunt and uncle. I was like seven months when it happened.
"I felt like I was nothing... like I was just a burden on my mother and father's shoulders. I don't want Alice to feel the same way."
"Let me guess; her father left her?"
"Yeah, right when I told him."
"Piece of shit..."
"You can say that again." You chuckled.
"PIECE OF SHIT!" Ace screamed, kicking his feet out like a toddler. It was obvious he was trying to get you to laugh now. He was never the best with this kind of stuff.
"Shit!" Alice said back.
Lilia froze. Malleus froze. Silver and Sebek froze. Ace froze.
You glared.
"She learned that from Deuce!"
"Unless Deuce is spelled with an A-C-E than, yeah, she DID!"
For the proceeding hour, Diasomnia and the young Alice laughed and watched as 'Tom' was chased by 'Jerry'.

super hard & horny jake with sleeping f reader
for all the ppl out there who might be startled reading this request, please know that my works always contain consent even if it’s not explicit between the characters (i.e. previously discussed or part of the plot).
***
“Babe, are you awake?”
Jake’s voice echoes throughout the quiet of his bedroom. He can faintly hear the quiet chirps of the grasshoppers from outside and peers down at your sleeping figure beside him.
You look so peaceful like this, cheek squished against his pillows with one leg propped in a triangle. Your lips pucker into a pout and Jake admires your sleeping form.
It’s too bad, though. He’s so hard he can’t enjoy his girlfriend in his bed properly.
“Baby, please wake up.”
Jake puts his hand on your waist and gives you a squeeze but you don’t budge. His eyes trail over that t-shirt you borrowed from him and gives you another squeeze when his fingers have dipped underneath the fabric. But you still don’t wake up, not even with his hands all over you.
He looks down at his lap and sees his cock straining against his boxers from the wet dream he had before waking up. Jake whines quietly when your body does shift, even though he’s pushing his hand up higher until your naked bottom half is presented to him.
You can use me, is what you said to him one Thursday night while completely sober. I’m into it if you’re the one waking me up.
And, well, Jake is down to try almost anything at your request. He loves you that much.
“Fuck,” he mutters to himself as he stands from the bed to rid himself of his plaid boxers. From the foot of the bed, Jake slowly peels the blanket off of your body and spreads your legs until your pussy is presented to him. Still careful with his movements, he sees that you haven’t woken up.
“Really? After all that?”
Your stillness doesn’t deter him. Jake moves himself back onto the bed and pushes his face until he’s able to stick his tongue out and lick you. Dry. You’re dry. But you won’t be by the time he’s pushing his cock into you.
“So soft,” he mumbles with his eyes closing shut. Jake pulls himself from you to check on your status. You’re still asleep.
“Wake up.” Jake sticks his tongue inside of your folds and massages your inner walls before licking fat stripes up and down your pussy in repeated motions to spread his spit all over you. “Need you so bad.”
He pulls away from you and situates himself behind your body, pulling you up until you’re somewhat arched. Jake takes himself in his hand and watches a wad of spit drop from his mouth to your slit until he’s rubbing his tip over you.
Jake sees you stirring. Your eyes blink open as if to assess the hour of the night like you were expecting it to be bright out. You shift until Jake pushes his tip inside of you and he bends down to kiss just below your ear as he pushes the rest of himself inside of you.
“What’s going on—ohhh.”
“I’m so horny, baby,” he whispers against your neck. Jake props himself up on his palms and thrusts into you until you’re voluntarily arching your back against his chest. “You didn’t wake up for me.”
“It’s okay,” you moan lowly. “I like waking up to this.”
“Yeah? You like waking up and feeling my hard cock inside you?” To make a point, Jake pushes himself forward abruptly and relishes in your gasp.
“Mhm.” You fall back down on the pillow below you but keep your posture for him. You feels the weight of his hips slinging like he’s close.
“Had a dream about us.”
“Oh yeah? What were we doing?”
“Exactly this,” Jake moans. “Fuck, you feel so good. So good.”
He barely pays attention to you, too focused on his pleasure to care about anything else. You love when he gets so lost in his euphoria that you’re almost an after thought because it always leads to mind blowing sex once the guilt settles in. You don’t really care that he gets off before you do from time to time. What follows is his magical mouth and fingers, sometimes together.
You arch your back even deeper until it feels like your ass is pressing back against him. Jake pushes his hips into you harder and faster until he pulls out and spills all over your folds. His cum is warm and sticky. Jake can’t help but gaze at you in wonder as he pushes his release around until you’re pressing yourself back against him.
Jake doesn’t need to ask you if you’re up for another round with the way you moan as he sinks right back into you.

Daughters with Soft Underbellies
john price x fem!reader | cowboy/outlaw x preachers daughter | masterlist
Chapter Four: daddy needs his lunch
tw: threats, minor threats of non-con, minor character death, surprise austrian death
The remnants of your life rattles in your lap as you trot along campestral American terrain.
You sit on the back of Kyle’s horse—a large, sweet beast named Bear—with your carpet bag on your lap and your legs thrown over the side of the animal. Unforgiving heat plagues the back of your neck as the mid-morning sun reaches high into the beryl sky, beating down and baking the earth and you along with it. Anxious hands grip your bag as you keep your head down, eyes staring at the sage brush and thickets that pass you by. Grasshoppers jump through the air as the earth around them is disturbed. You smile as their wings flap. The dirt looks just the same as it does in Penmosa, but the air smells fresher without the livestock to kick up muck.
It’s been hours since you’ve departed from the camp, and a single word has yet to leave your mouth. Your rump aches from your uncomfortable seat, but you keep your kvetching to nothing more than a thought in the back of your mind. Really, you’re glad that you’re here with Kyle rather than any of the other men. Riley intimidates you, Soap is too odd and mouthy, and John Price makes your skin crawl with a nervosity you can’t quite name.
Quiet chatter bleeds from the front of the pack where John Price leads the way as you cut through untraveled lands, but it sounds like buzzing flies to you. Unimportant. Something not meant for your ears. You keep your head down and mouth closed as you allow them to chat away. As the horse sways, you remind yourself that you’re nothing but a guest here.
(It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.)
The only thing you’ve been able to think about all morning—despite the fact you’re absolutely looney for traveling with such disgraceful men—is how you missed Daddy’s sermon this morning. You wonder if the church feels quiet with your absence. You wonder if he even realizes the gaping hole left in the pews. Your fingers gingerly reach for the cross on your necklace as if your guilt can absolve you from your skin.
“Awfully quiet back there,” Kyle suddenly hums. His voice has your head perking and back straightening. Angry muscles tighten along your spine from your poor posture, but you hide your wince. “Doing alright back there?”
You aren’t aware of how dry your mouth is until you swallow. “Yes, thank you,” you answer monotonously.
“Comfortable?” he presses.
“It’s a little warm,” you admit.
Kyle nods in agreement. There’s a canteen in my saddle pack if you need it.”
“You’re sure?”
“Course,” he shrugs. “Exposure can kill just as easily as a bullet. Need to keep yourself fed and watered if you wanna survive out here.”
You’re embarrassed by how quickly your fingers reach for the clasp on his pack. It comes undone with a simple flick of your fingers, and you’re eagerly reaching for the leather canteen before your mind can fully process it. It’s not cold, but it is fresh. As you take a sip, you let the water sit on your tongue, hoping it’ll rehydrate your mouth and bring it back to life.
“You got a hat?” Kyle asks as you put the canteen back.
“Afraid not,” you murmur. You pause as you secure his saddle pack. “I’ve got a scarf.”
“You should put it over your head,” he recommends. “The sun can be brutal out here on cloudless days like today.”
Taking Kyle’s advice, you rummage through your carpet bag until you find your headscarf. It’s made of thin, dainty silk that you put over your head and tie under your chin with ease. You pray the sun’s rays haven’t done too much damage to your skin, but the reprieve lets you breathe easier.
“I hope Riley didn’t scare you too much last night,” Kyle then says. “He can be rather crass at times, but I promise he’s all bark and no bite. Well, concerning us, anyway.”
“It’s alright,” you assure. “After all, I was the one who trespassed.”
“I thought you were just wandering?” Kyle teasingly goads.
“Well, the trespassing was an accident.”
“Of course.”
Bear interrupts your conversation with a peeved huff as the small caravan crosses over a particularly rough patch of terrain. His hooves slip over the chossy terrain, kicking rocks on either side of him, but he manages to keep steady. Kyle coos as he leans forward, hand patting the animal along his neck to calm him.
“Can I ask you a question?” you murmur just loud enough for only the two of you to hear.
“Didn’t you already?” Kyle deadpans.
You huff. “Well, another one.”
“Of course.”
“Why the… you know. The mask? It’s a little off putting.”
Kyle’s shoulders hunch before falling limp. He leans back with a sigh, but straightens himself back up when he feels himself bump into you. “Dunno. Guess he was accused of killing his family back home in Manchester. England, yeah? Showing his face would get him accosted, or worse. I think he’s just grown used to wearing it, that's all.”
“He killed his family?” you repeat, hushed.
“Oh, course not. No, he’d never. His family meant everything to him. Simon spent weeks tracking down the people who framed him and killed them. Settled the scores, and avenged his family. Couldn’t quite clear his name, though. He’s a good man,” Kyle recalls.
“Is that why he’s here? To get away from that?” you question.
He shrugs. “Part of it, I suppose.”
You nod your head as you adjust the scarf on your head from falling past your hairline. “What about you?”
“Why am I here?” Kyle clarifies. “Price was about all I had back in England. Lost my parents from consumption. Well, my dad died from consumption, but mum’s pneumonia wasn’t much easier. He’s taught me everything I know, so when he left, I did too.”
Your throat grows tight as he reminisces about his parents—about their deaths. You pull your carpet bag closer to your chest as you shift on the horse, as if your pitiful belongings can be of any comfort to you.
“I’m sorry about your family,” you offer.
“Yeah, me too,” Kyle sighs.
You swallow and change the subject. “So then, Mr. Price?”
A long pause settles between the two of you as you come to a vast, verdant pasture. Bear begins to move smoother on the kinder land, and you notice you’re not being jostled around as much as you were previously. Wildflowers brighten the slade with vivid yellows and purples, and suddenly the sun no longer feels quite as overbearingly warm.
“It’s a long story,” he finally relents.
“Oh,” you chirp.
It’s difficult to hide your disappointment at his evasion—it soaks your tone until it’s dripping wet. Feeling how your letdown emanates from your bones, Kyle looks over his shoulder at you before nodding at the short train of horses ahead.
“Soap’s also got a long story,” he explains. “I dunno much about it, if I’m being honest. All I know is that he doesn’t seem too keen on returning to Scotland.”
“He’s a curious man,” you note.
“That’s a polite way to put it,” Kyle deadpans.
“Is that why his accent is different? Because he’s from Scotland?” you wonder.
He nods. “Yeah, he’s up further north than any of the rest of us.”
“Is that why his hair is so strange, too?”
Kyle’s laughter is so forceful that it nearly scares you out of your seat. He manages to calm himself quick enough so as to not garner too much attention from the others, but his words still titter.
“No, I think it’s because no one’s been brave enough to tell him otherwise,” he humors.
The mirth Kyle shares with you is so contagious that you catch yourself chuckling as you sway on the back of his horse. Now content with knowing that you’re well hydrated, he allows silence to fall between the two of you once more as the small band of outlaws, cowboys, and a wayward woman continues to cut through the lush pasture.
A duo of deer stand proudly along the environs of a small weald that skirts the edge of the pasture. Perking up, you blink at the creatures as they curiously watch you pass by. One of the deer—a beautiful doe with a wiggling, wet nose—prods at her young calf, but the boy does not seem alarmed at all. He stares, unwavering, before eventually listening to his mother and returning into the safety of uncultivated trees and bushes.
After another mile or so, the speed of the caravan begins to dwindle, and you find your body leaning to look around Kyle. John Price has his head held high as he surveys the land with his horse stopped. She whinnies as he orders for her to trot in a circle, and he doesn’t stop until he’s satisfied with what he sees—a lack of people.
“Right then. What do you say, boys? Lunch time?” he prompts as he looks back at his crew.
When everyone begins to nod and grunt in agreement, they quickly dismount. Kyle awkwardly manages to swing his leg over Bear’s back without kicking you, then he offers you his hand to aid you down. The moment your feet hit the earth, you feel every muscle in your body scream. Your tailbone pops as you stretch your legs, and your bum feels numb. Sighing, you place your carpet bag down before stretching your arms high into the sky as if you could cup the sun into the palm of your hands.
It’s then that you realize most of your pain comes from more than just riding a horse through the hardly civilized backyard of the United States. Though you’re not particularly disfigured, your cheek still throbs with that dull ache, and your scraped knees scream at you when you bend them a certain way. The skin is still angry, and its sting is hard to ignore when you walk. But there is a pleasant breeze, and the wildflowers wave at you as you adjust the skirt of your dress. This country is as good of an emollient as any, and your father’s steeple isn’t even here to ruin the view.
“Hungry?”
John Price’s voice has your head whipping to the side so fiercely that your scarf falls down the back of your head. You don’t even bother to fix it as he stares at you expectantly with his arms extended. In his hands lies more of the same jerky you were given last night for dinner, along with a generous amount of hardtack.
“Thank you, Mr. Price,” you murmur. As you take the food into your hands, your thumb swipes over the hardtack, forcing a few crumbs to flutter into the uncut grass at your feet. You wonder if this would count as your daily bread.
“Just John is fine,” he waves. You stare down at your food as you wait for him to leave, but he doesn’t. Thumbs hooked into his belt buckle, he continues to stare at you. “How’s your cheek?”
Blinking, you look up at him and fight back the urge to press at the wound. “It’s fine.”
John hums. “The swelling isn’t too bad.”
“Yes, it’s… fine,” you repeat, gauche.
Still, he does not leave. Harsh, cobalt eyes wander over every inch of your face before he trails lower. His gaze sears your skin as it settles on your throat, and then your collarbones. When you shift, uncomfortable under the pin of his gawking, he looks back up at you.
“Ought to keep that necklace of yours hidden,” he recommends.
Looking down, you witness the way the charm on your necklace glints in the glory of the sun. It’s so bright it nearly burns. “Why?” you ask.
“You shouldn’t put stealing past anyone who we might run into out here,” he shrugs. “You might get hurt. Or worse.”
Swallowing, you feel the sweat on your palms begin to soak into your hardtack. “People would kill over a silly necklace?”
“I’ve seen people get killed for less, and that’s a fair amount of gold you’re lugging around, little lamb,” he says, his voice grave. “If you won’t take it off, at least keep it tucked underneath your blouse.”
All you can do is stand there and blink as John walks away, leaving you with your hands full of food and your mind riddled with worry. Shoving salted jerky in your mouth to hold between your teeth, you quickly shove the charm of your necklace between your breasts, keeping it well hidden beneath your clothes. You don’t think your heart could handle losing the only trinket you have left of your mother.
Only then do you allow yourself to enjoy your meal. As much as one can enjoy hardtack, anyway. It is—well—quite firm against your teeth, and as you bite into it you fear you might crack the enamel and splinter it into a million pieces. It’s bland and salty on your tongue, and you find your lips puckering. No more easier on the jaw but more tasty, you chew on your jerky next. It’s certainly nothing compared to your salted pork—a luxury you can no longer afford now that you’re out in the thick of the heartlands—but it’s enough to fill your stomach and quell its growling.
Kyle offers you his canteen again when he notices you’ve finished eating, and you use it to wash down the sawdust texture stuck on the insides of your cheeks. Then, you stretch your legs. Miniature daisies dance at your feet as you wander the pasture, and you revel in the kind zephyr that teases the skirt of your dress.
It’s strange to be here. As if it wasn’t odd enough being in the middle of nowhere with four men you don’t know, it’s even worse knowing that you should be working. Pews need cleaning, and Daddy needs his lunch—something you always prepare—and here you are, enjoying a makeshift picnic with a band of outlaws and crooks. Teeth sink into the flesh of your lip, and your face throbs. Guilt erodes your chest until your ribs are brittle enough for your heart to puncture, and still you ignore it as if your bones aren’t turning into dust at the soles of your shoes.
“You hear that?”
Riley’s gravelly voice cuts through the quiet afternoon, ripping your attention away from the nature around you. He stands staring at the hill on your left with quiet eyes and tense shoulders. Rolls of lush grass sway as it covers the earth better than dirt covers a grave. Riley stares past the hill, eyes squinting at the horizon while his fingers itch for iron.
“Hear what?” you question.
He snaps his head in your direction as if he had forgotten all about your existence. Jaw flexing, he motions you away. “Get back,” he bites. “I think someone’s coming.”
Breath catching in your throat, you quickly fumble with your scarf as you pull it back over your head. His warning has caught the attention of the other men, and they all stare at the same hill that Riley does. Stumbling over a small thicket, you quickly make your way to Bear who’s busy eating his own lunch as his head dips low to graze on the grass.
You situate yourself next to him just in time to witness someone come up over the hill. A large man on an even larger horse gallops over the horizon. He travels at a leisurely pace, then halts the moment he catches sight of the group. The stranger sits back on his horse, but not even the distance can erase the anger emanating from his body.
“I think we just found trouble,” Soap murmurs.
“There’ll be no trouble unless he makes any,” Riley chuckles darkly.
A single gunshot rings throughout the air, quickly followed by a squeak that rips its way through your throat. The sound echoes over the rolling hills, and it’s enough to get the horses to perk up.
“Don’t worry, he’s not shooting at us,” Kyle assures. “He fired a round in the air.”
“He’s headed this way,” Riley huffs.
John rubs his hand over his chin as he looks back at everyone. His eyes stay on you for longer than what feels comfortable before he brings his attention back to the stranger. “Just be quiet and let me do the talking.”
It takes the man little time to close the distance with his horse galloping at full speed. Riley’s hands shake with the hardly restrained urge to reach for his gun, but John stands cool with his hands on his belt and a smile on his face.
The stranger slows the moment he’s within talking distance, and your tongue shrivels up at the sight of him. He’s the largest man you think you’ve ever seen—even larger than Riley. He sits proud and broad on his horse who huffs and puffs with exertion like he’ll be crushed beneath the weight of his master soon enough. Similar to Riley, his face is obscured by an odd mask, though it’s nothing like you’ve ever seen before. Nothing short of an executioner’s hood, black cloth obscures the entire circumference of his head and face, excluding two holes in which his pale eyes peer through in a glare.
“You’re on my property,” the man barks in an odd accent. It’s different from John’s, and even stranger than Soap’s—something else you don’t quite recognize.
“My apologies,” John chuckles cordially. “We’re just passing through. We thought we could cut through here off of the main trail. We’re in a bit of a hurry.”
The man adjusts his grip on the reins of his horse, and it’s only then that you see the pistol in his hand. It flashes in the rays of the sun, bright enough to singe your eyes, and despite the heat baking you alive, you feel your blood run cold.
“Do you think I’m a fool?” he spits. “Do you really expect me to believe that you weren’t aware this was private land? That makes you a trespasser, doesn’t it? And trespassers get shot.”
John’s shoulders tense through the cotton of his shirt and the leather of his vest. His six shooter sits loud and proud on the side of his hip, yet he doesn’t reach for it.
“Or,” he says, hands gesturing to either side of his body, “we leave and you never have to see us again.” His voice is too firm for his words to be a suggestion.
The stranger is quiet for a long moment as if sincerely contemplating John’s offer. His pale eyes scrutinize every detail of his face before glancing at Riley, then to you. His gaze burns you to the point you nearly wince, but you attempt to save face by keeping your feet steady as Bear continues to peacefully graze next to you.
“Or,” the man counters, “we could make a deal.”
John hums, sincerely surprised. “Well, I’d never say no to an offer,” he chuckles. “What’s your proposal?”
“Times are tough. I work these lands with these animals and sparse crops by myself. No ranch hands or workers, just me. I’ve no wife to come home to, or children to raise.” A swift air of arrogance surrounds the man as he holsters his pistol beside his hip. Your head grows light when he points a finger in your direction. “If you let me take that one there, and I’ll consider it fair payment for your trespassing and let the rest of you leave without a bullet in your back.”
It’s as if every last bit of air has been syphoned from the earth. No matter how much you will your lungs to expand, your diaphragm refuses to relent. Instead, the useless muscle seizes and flutters as you stare at this man and replay his offer over and over in your mind. His words echo just as bad as his gun does; relentless and deadly. Your feet urge you to run, but you’re stuck in place.
John’s chuckle is sonorous and warm. Stomach churning, you watch as he looks back over his shoulder at you with florid cheeks and bright teeth. His gaze is warm and kind despite the chill his titter sends down your spine, and if you were any more like your father, you would have slapped him for the gesture.
“I’d take good care of her,” the man assures with a haughty grin lacing his tone. “I just need a bitch for breeding and-”
John doesn’t even give the man any time to explain himself before his fingers wrap around the holster of his six shooter. Head whipping around, hand raising, he pulls the trigger before anyone can comprehend his actions. A single shot fires and leaves a cacophonous screeching in your ears as your hand covers your mouth in an attempt to swallow your scream. With wide eyes and a fluttering heart, you watch as this stranger falls off his horse and plummets to the ground like a boulder crashing off the steep palisades of a canyon.
Once his body stills, you notice a newly made hole in his mask sitting right above the two for his now lifeless eyes.

“No!”
Screaming, you rushed up. Breathe!
In, out. In, out. Blood raced.
In.
Out.
With a shuddering breath, you sighed. You became aware of a presence at your pillow. Glancing, you locked eyes with your second robin. Well, you called this bird a robin, but it was barely that.
The bird was covered in black feathers, with the exception being bright red that covered its head and a small part of its chest. It hardly resembled a robin anymore. This one, you referred to as Hood.
Hood gave a little chirp, hopping over to your lap. It settled down, providing a reassuring weight. You started petting it, just a little. Hood could always tell when you had this particular nightmare.
You didn't have nightmares often, but if you did, it was always the same one. It started simple, an unlucky mistake leading to the meeting of a soulmate (which was nightmarish enough). Your brain never really elaborated on the meeting, as if it couldn’t quite comprehend what it could be like. Instead, the horror appeared when you met your own soul animal.
It was impossible to meet your own soul form until you've met a soulmate, as the animal orbited those you were bound to. Many a novel has been dedicated to those discovering that their soul has taken some unfortunate form, and their journey of self-acceptance. One particular novel you were fond of had the protagonist learning to accept that their form was a snail.
But… in the nightmare, your form wasn't that of a snail. It wasn't the form of a snake, a grasshopper or even a turtle.
It was a robin.
A little, fluttering robin. In green. In yellow.
In red.
You always awoke after that.
You continued petting Hood. Pet pat, pet pat. It always let you have little leniencies like this, after your nightmares. You appreciated it.
For you, a robin was the worst form your soul could possibly have. You had tried previously to logic yourself out of this fear. What was so bad about being a robin? You had four of them already; they weren’t so bad, albeit annoying. You just couldn’t… stand the idea.
It reminded you of the blood on your hands. The sight never really left you. The bodies of soul animals didn't remain, they disappeared just as the soul did after death. The fact both comforted and reassured you. You didn't have to bury the body, but you also didn't have anything to mourn.
You had made a small grave anyway.
You cried. Just a little. Hood gave a small tweet of distress, raising itself up to you. You took the offer, picking the bird up and cuddling its face. Just a little.
You felt sick.
You two stayed like that a while, two souls sheltering from the world. You wondered if your soulmates ever did a similar thing with your soul form. It was times like this that had you considering reaching out. You brushed aside some feathers on Hood’s chest, revealing a faint, scarred Y.
Maybe not.
A scutter of wings could be heard from your kitchen. You groaned, lifting Hood off your lap as you slowly got up. Who was it this time?
Bleary eyes blinked, you slowly made your way over. You were joined by Hood, as it made itself a steady weight on your shoulder. Hood was always a little too heavy for you to carry about easily, but you decided to be kind by not complaining this time.
Staring into your kitchen, it took you a moment to understand the sight in front of you.
A robin darting about, as a bat watched from the top of your fridge. It was a typical image for your home, but why..
Why was the robin… purple? And, was that bat a little smaller than usual?
…
Oh, no.
Strength left your legs as you crumbled to the floor, just staring at the two with an empty gaze. Hood squawked in alarm, fluttering off your shoulder.
You had two new soulmates.
Goddamnit.
~ ~ ~ ~
Somehow, Spoiler and Orphan (you later figured out their identities, none of your soulbonds were subtle) weren't your first surprise bond. No, that dubious honor belonged to the fourth robin.
You had been a little exhausted after a long day being tormented by Wing’s affections. Occasionally Wing has rather clingy days, and it becomes impossible to leave the house. It had only gotten worse after the second robin’s demise. You endured.
As a result, you were sleeping in. That is, until the sounds of high pitched peeping noises stirred you from your slumber. You slowly awoke, your eyes meeting bright green.
“Aaagh!” You shrieked, jumping back and falling off the bed. “Owww.” Groaning, you slowly sat up, taking in the situation.
There was a baby bird. On your bed. “What…?” You muttered. The bird didn't have many feathers, but the ones that it did have were a mixture of black and green. It was this fact, alongside the bird being a robin, that made you register exactly what was going on.
“Ohh my god.” Your head was in your hands. That was how done you were. Most people stopped getting soulmates at one. Sometimes there were bonds of two, maybe even three. Having four bonds was already rather extraordinary (which is why you pretended all your robins were the same one), but now there was a fifth.
Well, at least the baby bird was cute. You reached out, extending a finger to pet it, when it snapped at you. With its beak and everything.
Betrayal.
Since when were baby birds aggressive? All your other soulmates were older than you so you never got to care for any of them. Now you finally have one, and it snaps at you.
Turning away from the bird, you mean to sulk a little, but get interrupted by the Bat fluttering right in front of you. You blink, and the next second it's perched right by your new soulmate. You stare, eagerly anticipating a conflict.
The baby bird stares at the Bat for a second, before making an adoring noise and resting under its wing.
What.
Suffice to say, your initial relationship with Robin didn't start off perfectly. It did seem to warm to you within a few weeks though, so you didn't feel too bad about it.
In all honesty, you were more concerned about what the existence of a fourth robin would mean for the third. Would it be a smooth transition? A simple bestowing of the title like it had been for the first and second robin?
Or would it be tainted with blood, another robin bleeding out in your palms. You shuddered.
You didn't want to find out.
~ ~ ~ ~
Adjusting to two new additions to your bond was a little strange. All your bonds so far had been birth ones, formed at the start of your existence (with the exception of Robin, which formed when Robin started his life). Spoiler and Orphan were delayed bonds, also known as fated bonds. They started later in life, generally after significant events, but they can just randomly pop up too.
Were you going to get a new bond every time Batman trained a new vigilante? Was being a vigilante a requirement? That has some odd implications for you, actually.
You didn't really want to become a ‘hero’.
Enough of that. A few days had passed since the emergence of your two new bonds, and you suspected that the rest of your soulmates had found the change to be about as surprising as you did.
You could tell, because for the first time in a literal month, you were alone! No bat watching from a corner, no bird fluttering around you. Just you, and complete, lovely, isolation.
Honestly, it was so quiet you were a little unnerved. You had gotten so used to the constant chirping and fluttering of wings.
As a result, you've left the house.
You enjoy a nice walk, taking in the sights you usually rush over. Settling into a coffee shop, you treat yourself to a cookie. It was fun just to enjoy the atmosphere for once, without the paranoia of having what occasionally felt like a literal flock of birds following you around.
You've almost finished your drink when a shadow falls over you. A lean man stands before you, clutching a coffee to himself as if it contained the secrets to life. You blink.
“Sorry, I was wondering if I could sit with you?” He gestured to the cafe, and you noticed all the other seats were occupied. Huh, you were so busy being infatuated with your current freedom that you didn't even notice.
“Ah, yeah that's fine.” You replied, giving a small smile.
He smiled back, settling down and pulling out a laptop. Your time passes in simple peace, him on his laptop, and you on your phone. A scuttering noise drew you away from your scrolling though, and you looked up to see a familiar scene.
A blue bird had landed on the man’s coffee, shaking it as if it was trying to knock it over. The laptop man was fighting back though, doing his best to preserve it.
“Ah.” You muttered, staring. They both turned to look at you, exactly at the same time. It was a little creepy.
“Apologies for disturbing you.” Coffee man said. The blue bird jumped off the coffee, turning to you.
“It's alright. Is that your soul animal?” You replied, watching the bird hop closer.
“Ah yeah, he is. My family can be annoying about my caffeine intake sometimes.” There was a pause. “He seems quite interested in you, though.” There was a question in that statement, and you had the inkling that this was leading up to something you wouldn't like.
“What type of animal is it? I can tell it's some type of bird but..” The bird had reached you now, hopping onto your raised hand.
“It's a raven…” The man continued on, starting a tangent about raven facts, but you were too distracted to listen. Instead, you were fixated on the bird that was nuzzling your hand in a very familiar manner.
A bird that wasn't a raven. A bird that recognised you.
A bird that was a robin.
Wing.
You felt like both laughing and crying. Here you are, celebrating finally getting some space from your soulmates, and you meet one? How ridiculous. This was a nightmare.
You need to leave, immediately.
You stood up, your chair making an awful screech as you did so. Coffee man looked a bit surprised, as you peeled Wing off you and handed it to him.
“Sorry about that.” You smiled. “I had some extra bird seed on me from feeding some birds today. Perhaps your soul animal could tell. I've got to be going though, maybe I'll see you some other time.” And with that, you start marching out the shop.
Maybe your behavior was suspicious, but you really couldn't afford to stick around. All it took was for one of your soul animals to appear on you and the game would be up. He’d instantly know that the soul animal would have appeared from your side of the connection. It would be over, the efforts of years upon years.
You couldn't let that happen.
“Wait!” A voice called out, the tapping of footsteps following. You swung back around, meeting the gaze of your soulmate. He extended a card to you.
“This is my number, perhaps we can text in the future. I know we didn't really talk, but I enjoyed your company.” He smiled. It would have been a nice scene if the sight didn't make your gut twist.
You took the card.
“Oh! And before I forget, my name’s Tim.”
You answered back, giving your name.
You prayed that he assumed the shakes of your body were due to the cold.

And that's the second chapter! Woohoo! Hope you all enjoyed it, since the third chapter is already half way done! I'm rather excited for it haha ^ ^
