Raphael's First Love—A Talk With Splinter

part of the First Love Talk miniseries!

The old metronome in the corner of the dojo ticked on incessantly as Raphael sat in indignant silence with Master Splinter. After four outbursts, a fight with Leonardo, and days of distance, Splinter had put his foot down and called his son in for a talk about his behavior. Beneath his stern exterior, Splinter was concerned.

"Raphael, explain yourself," Splinter demanded with a calm voice, treading a thin line with his angriest son's temper. Not out of fear—Splinter could and would easily put the giant back in his place even as an old rat. That was no issue. "What has gotten into you?"

Weeks of this crap, that's what, thought Raph bitterly. Weeks of feeling sick to his stomach every time she was around, trying to put up a good front and getting embarrassed by himself or his brothers; he felt stupid. Weak. Utterly at her mercy, and she didn't even know. Good. I don't want her to. Splinter gave him a skeptical eye. He shifted his position multiple times, uncomfortable and trying to look casual. Grunted dismissively. But he knew his father was not going to take that for an answer. He let out a scoff, dodging eye contact, "Things gettin' under my shell like usual."

"But not like usual, because you are worse-off than usual," observed Splinter.

His mental health was actively declining the more he deliberated on the pang in his heart he felt when he thought about her. It made his guts twist to think about why he was so angry, why he was even afraid of her, deep down. The last thing he ever wanted to admit to himself, let alone Splinter, was that he cared what she thought. A lot.

Too much.

All of his brothers seemed so confident, and yet he was self-conscious. Why? Why do I gotta be like this?!

Raph shrugged. "You know me, master. Comes with the whole package, whether all of you like it or not." He was already moody, prone to rapidly-changing emotions. That was never a guess, it was a given. "Look, I'll do us a favor and just end this convo now—I ain't in a bad way. And Leo needs to stay in his lane comin' to you over a little fight." He started to get up, leave the terrible silence of the training room and that god awful ticking metronome. Splinter jabbed his cane into his plastron, knocking him back, and then brought it down hard on his foot. Raph yelped and stumbled down, quickly reassuring his seated position.

"Enough!" Splinter barked. "Sit, Raphael."

Splinter had his full attention, now. The top of his foot ached dully.

Raph was seething on the inside. On the outside, he slumped over his knee, hiding his face behind his thick forearm.

This was all her fault. If she hadn't fallen—literally crashed—into their lives, he would be fine. There would be no question about what to do or what he was feeling. It was always them and the shadows—no people, no complications. He always knew that would never be accepted despite craving it with every ounce of his being. Why change that? Why suddenly bring more emotions into the mix? Before her, it was all straightforward. Now, he worried if he was too brutish, too much of a freak, if his normal habits weren't so "normal". He didn't want to feel like he was under one of Donnie's microscopes, with her eye looking through the lens.

Splinter furrowed his gray brow at him, resting his hands on his cane. "This is about your self esteem, is it not?" he questioned carefully. Prying.

"You couldn't know anything about it!" Raph shouted back. He swung his hand as he spoke. "I'm a six-foot turtle, there's no changing it! No changing me!"

Sighing a light breath, Splinter closed his eyes. This was going to be the challenge for the day. No day was without its challenges. He recentered his thoughts, looking for a different angle. He wanted to speak his son's language.

"Correct, there is no changing you."

Raph stuttered on his response as his face fell almost imperceptibly, but Splinter knew every minute expression of his kids.

If she knows, I'm done for. Raphael's mind was swirling and his thoughts were reaching dead-ends left and right. There was no changing. No hope? He couldn't tell. He'd given up before he'd even tried. Because like his weapon, he was defensive, and did everything possible to protect what? Himself. His big, soft heart in there that needed some serious attention. The thought of telling her made him want to hurl. But like a moth to a flame, he kept coming right back to her, torturing himself with "what-if's" and doubts he had all the while.

"What do you want me to say, Splinter?" Raph spat with a low voice.

"I want you to be honest with yourself," Splinter replied.

Raph poked the tip of his sai into the mat before him, digging it into the material. "Okay, I'll bite," he said, "what do you think I'm lyin' about? Huh?"

He already knew the answer to that. It was everything; he rejected the shyness he felt inexplicably when she was around. He felt dirty next to her, or if he accidentally touched her, it was an ordeal. Because he was a mutant and she was a human. Out of all of her pick of people, he never could have been at the top of her list. He doubted he even made the list as an option.

Knowing Raphael was lying then, too, Splinter simply lifted his chin at him, and waited for the real answer.

The silence was getting to be too much for him. He jammed his sai into the mat, stabbing through it. But in his face was sadness, not anger. He finally admitted, "I just want to be accepted. Even just by her." Fiddling with his sai, he averted his eyes to stare at something random next to him, adding quietly, a little bashfully: "Aaaaaand sometimes I think Leo has a…better shot than me. That's why we were fightin'. I went nuts because he was gettin' along with her and it made me feel some stuff I don't want to feel."

There it was, thought Splinter, bingo. "Well, you are certainly not the first young man to make a fool of yourself over a girl."

"Master, I don't even know what to do with myself. How am I ever gonna know what to do with her?"

"The first step would be to stop ruining my mat," Splinter said as he bonked his son's head with the end of his cane, irked that he was creating a hole in it with his sai. Raph quickly tucked his weapon away. He muttered an apology. Splinter cleared his throat before continuing. "The second step would be for you to face your fears, Raphael. Accept them, conquer them. You are as you are—what humanity thinks of you is not your concern. You know who you are. I would like to think that [y/n] does as well."

Raph shifted, uncomfortable. "Yeah, I don't think she does. I don't really…"

She was all too kind, beautiful, and smart; a deadly, terrifying combination, in his predicament. He'd been plagued with dreams of being with her night after night. Not worrying about a single thing until the moment he woke up—he was stressing every morning. His anxieties always seemed to curse him cropping up in his dreams; not even in sleep could he escape her sphere of influence.

Placing a gentle hand on Raphael's shoulder, Splinter looked down at him, "Then, you show her who you really are. Raphael."

What your Life Lesson is by your Sun Sign

Aries: Your lesson is to learn the difference between play and work. It is not that you are too playful, but it can be that you struggle to find work where you feel you can be your authentic self, which can lead to a lot of your life being aimless in search of something you haven’t felt. It’s important to be concrete about your goals and to find a path to meet them. It’s not always about play; sometimes your best time to feel playful is when you’re accomplishing your goals, not when you find something that’s exciting.

Taurus: You need to stop being so focused on how you want to live your life when there is a large world around you. If you get stuck in your city, state, country, or even just being wherever you know, it can be hard for you to explore the world around you, and most of your desires are quite selfish and related to your success. That’s all fine, but you need to learn to care about the world around you. Just because your belly is full and you have a big house doesn’t mean the world is your world. When you start expanding your awareness, you’ll find that your life has more meaning.

Gemini: You need to learn that knowledge isn’t going to get you to the place you truly want to go. Deep down, you crave something so profound, but your mind keeps pulling you in, which only inflates your ego and makes it very difficult to understand. Leo: Your lesson to learn is to be down to earth. Oftentimes, it can be hard for you to be humble, even when you want to be. Through hard work and dedication, when you see the fruits of your labor, you will have humility and be able to help other people. Sagittarius: You can be so against routine that it backfires on you eventually. It’s not that you need routine, but you certainly need structure since your adventurous soul can border on recklessness, and it’s so easy for Sagittarius to get good things in their life and recklessly ruin them, but what you need to expand is structure. You need a job where you have to dedicate hours to your craft; you need a routine to keep your health up; and you need to carve time out of your routine for hobbies. You need to pay attention to the details because, as much as you see the bigger picture, you miss out on a lot when you refuse to concern yourself with details. You need to focus on refining your life and being less impulsive because you really do crave to be innocent and free as a kid, but you lose your innocence whenever you make impulsive decisions. So refine your life and pay attention to the details. You can gain a lot of wisdom when you see both the bigger and smaller aspects of life.

Capricorn: You need to learn balance. You’re so black and white, and it can be almost scary to be around someone with this kind of mindset, as it can do the biggest harm to yourself and bring negativity to others. For the most part, you’re driven to become successful because you have a lot of trauma you don’t want to unpack, and you think the way to distract yourself is through work, your studies, or just occupying yourself because if a Capricorn isn’t occupied, they often turn to drugs. But let’s be real: this way of thinking and being is what makes you so dark and often reserved. It’s important that, just as much as you focus on the serious stuff, you spend time with friends, having fun, going out, and experiencing life. Let your life be a vibe, and romanticize your life. To expand, you need to make your life like a movie and expand your horizons beyond the mundane. Make your life more exquisite, and let your friends be part of it. Fall in love, and let that person be for you. Learn that it’s okay to go to therapy, but yeah, you can still go hard at work and the gym. Aquarius: Your way to expansion is to connect to how you feel and to become introspective. Aquarius at times can be so focused on the world and their friends and just everything outside of their self sometimes their help and volunteering and always being available to others is to avoid sitting with yourself and dealing with your emotions. It was probably super hard for you to understand how you felt as a kid but you know you didn’t know how to deal with the negative emotions at all. Your lesson is to introspect and get to know why you feel the way you do what is in your heart. It is good to spend time journaling, mediating, examining your internal world, and taking space for yourself. This can give your life a lot more purpose and direction, but it can also make it so that people can actually understand you and not feel that you’re so detached. Come out of detachment and reflect so that you can be at peace with seeing the world and realizing your place in it.

Pisces: Pisces You need to learn to use that great imagination and lively internal world and actually utilize it in the world. It seems to you that you’d rather just keep it to yourself, and what good is that? Share yourself with the world. You are so great at making the world a better place because that hideaway is actually fun when you bring it to life. You know how, when you’re a kid, you play and act out your imagination with your toys. Be like a kid again, Pisces, and act out what’s all in your head. Learn to speak your mind; there is no need to shy away from sharing the wisdom you have beneath your exterior. Enjoy life’s pleasures and make the most of your life. Social Dynamics in the Manor

I did this for funsies

Leaders

Eli- The peacekeeper. He’s invested in the happiness of all the manor’s inhabitants, and often steps in (uninvited) to mediate issues between them. Secretly, he likes the attention and fulfillment that being needed gives him.

Luchino- One of the more passive “leaders.” He’s of the opinion that most inter-personal issues will sort themselves out with or without his interference, as nature often does. He gives his opinion on things freely, but doesn’t step in with force unless it’s critical.

Orpheus- A wolf in sheep’s clothing, Orpheus plays the role of a Follower to get a more personal understanding of the others. He prefers to lead from behind the scenes, controlling situations through careful leaking of information, or a specified figurehead.

Emily- A natural mother figure, Emily is sought out for comfort and advice as often as she is healing. Her rapport is especially strong with the other women of the manor.

Ada- A bit of a gaslighter, to be honest. Ada is good at convincing people they want the same things she does, be it through words or hypnosis. Her ability to read people is of strong use. She’s a bit more passive, however, and is less likely to see a need to step in for situations that don’t impact Emil.

Alva- Not a natural-born leader by any means, but his previous role in education has made him an experienced one. Alva is perhaps a bit too calm, a bit too slow to react as a leader, but he is nothing if not level-headed and calculating.

Kiegan- She’s been cold-shouldered for too long, and is not willing to be ignored anymore in life. Kiegan takes charge every time she sees an opening.

Phillipe- Has a strong sense of justice, and will always speak up for whatever he views as morally correct (though it should be noted that his morals are warped and prejudiced, and someone other than him is always at fault.) He can be even more pushy than Kiegan, when his heart burns with enough passion for something.

Followers

Andrew- Likes to think he’s a Lone Wolf, but he often feels directionless.

Luca- Will point a horse towards water, but not lead it or try forcing it to drink.

Freddy- Fancies himself a leader, but for all his intelligence and scheming he’s not well-liked enough to have followers. Also, his plans tend to be too…sacrificing.

Florian- As long as he gets his ten seconds of fame every once in a while, he's fine with whatever the atmosphere ends up being. ironically, he occasionally sides with Freddy, just because that man's "strategies" can be such dumpster-fires that it would be easy for Florian to save the day.

Kreacher, Emma, Lucky Guy, Willaim, Helena, Vera, Kevin, Margaretha, Patricia, Murro, Jose, Mike, Demi, Victor, Edgar, Ganji, Anne, Emil, Memory, Joker, Frederick, Lily, Violetta, Smiley ,Leo, Michiko, Wu Chang, Ann, Antonio, Ithaqua, Sangria, Grace

Lone Wolves

Aesop- Sometimes acts as a follower, but he doesn’t usually feel invested in the various issues and drama that comes up.

Norton- Is willing to follow when a situation calls for group cooperation, but he trusts his own judgment over that of most others in the manor.

Naib- Experience has taught him to fend for himself. He looks out for his allies, of course, but a group-mentality is sometimes detrimental to survival.

Alice- She behaves like a Follower for the sake of blending in, but Alice spends every unwatched moment she gets with her own goals and curiosities in the forefront of her mind.

Melly- Solitary and private. Melly makes truces, not allies.

Qi- Believes some emotional distance is the key for maintaining a clear head and fair judgement.

Matthias- A recluse for safety’s sake. He partners more closely with a select view, but does not like to call into crowds.

Jack- Only cares about satiating his own desires, and not the manor’s socio-politics.

Bane- A recluse for his own safety. He’s content with being left alone for the rest of eternity.

Hatsur- He speaks for and enforces the decrees of the Baron, but otherwise doesn’t care for the affairs of the other Hunters and Survivors.

Joseph- What’s the point in trying to obtain peace in hell? At least suffering, he thinks, would sometimes be more interesting.

Burke- He’s only concerned with his inventions, his work, and he picks sides and solutions according to what lets him get back to things the most quickly.

Fool’s Gold- Doesn’t care about anyone else’s problems. He barely cares about his own some days.

As Don nudged Mikey to tell him to bring the food Lil Mikey and Leon had made to Donnie, Raphael cleared his throat and brought Leon over to Raph. “C’mon kid. Lets have you sit with your brother now. You need some time to relax.”

Leon didn’t quite seem to want to rely on Raph at the moment, considering Raph was still way more injured than he was. But he at least took a seat next to Raph and let April squish up next to him. And when Lil Mikey shamelessly clambered up on Raph’s lap to be wrapped in a hug, Don took a seat carefully on the foot cushion Raph’s leg was propped up on.

“...I’m sorry if this is really uncomfortable for me to ask. But could you tell me what just happened? I want to know what’s normal for you guys so I don’t have to worry about if there’s something medically wrong,” Don prompted, trying to be delicate but having his curiosity way outweigh his respect for privacy.

After a quick glance at the others, and seeing Leon just avert his gaze to the floor, Lil Mikey looked over with a slight smile. “He was talking to Donnie.”

“...Through a communicator?” Don asked, not quite sure how the two boys were able to speak without yelling between the rooms.

“In their brains,” Lil Mikey corrected with a bright grin, using his left hand to point at his own head. “Though I’m not sure if it was the ninja mind meld this time or just the twin thing.”

The words Lil Mikey said made no sense to the other two, and Raphael drew a slight sigh as he looked to Don, ready for him to explain. But it seemed Don was also failing to comprehend what Lil Mikey was saying, for he had his fingers pressed together while pursing his lips.

“Oh, here we go,” Leon muttered when Don finally drew a breath to speak.

“I’m sorry, what do you mean by ‘twin thing’?” Don asked first. “You mentioned earlier that they’re twins, but I’m not sure I follow considering they’re-” “Different species? Yeah, Donnie argued that a lot in the beginning too,” Leon filled in, rolling his eyes slightly.

“...Yeah…,” Don agreed, now even more confused since they actually did seem to be talking about the two boys being biological twins and not just using the term incorrectly.

“We used to think it was just a thing Leo liked to say to feel close to Donnie, but Dadxum told us recently that it’s actually a legit thing,” Lil Mikey explained, voice full of mirth and excitement when talking about Draxum. “He said that since Leo and Donnie were probably born around the same time, and now share 50% of the same DNA, they became twins when they were mutated. And now they’re always in each other’s heads. Well- Sort of? They just always know how each other is feeling and stuff.”

There was a lot to unpack from what Lil Mikey said, but luckily Don had seen enough mystic happening to not immediately discredit it. And the more he thought about it the more he understood, and it explained things that had been a little odd before. April saying that Leo and Donnie caused each other to spiral off each other. Leon reacting to everyone being loud when apparently it was actually just Donnie that was bothered by it. Leon being so certain that Donnie wouldn’t eat the stew, and would be asleep for awhile. And the fact that he wasn’t worried about Donnie being asleep in the first place.

“You saying Lil Leo and Donnie have some constant psychic connection with each other or something?” Raphael piped in now, sort of following with what Lil Mikey was saying. At first he thought he was being pranked, especially when Lil Mikey nodded so happily. But the way Leon almost looked embarrassed, and April rubbed his back made Raphael doubt his initial thought.

“We can all do the ninja mind meld, where we can talk in each others’ heads super fast. But Leo says with him and Donnie it’s all emotions and not words,” Raph supplied, pointing to his own head with a grin, then looking down to Leon to make sure he was explaining it right. “We always just thought he just knew Donnie really well and was good at guessing what was wrong. But after-” Raph spoke happily for the most part, but then abruptly cut off as he almost breached the subject none of them liked talking about. As Leon hunched up more, Raph reached over to pull him close, tucking him onto his lap with Lil Mikey and looking more sullen. Even April scooted over to get close again and leaned over to lay against Leon, almost like she was afraid he’d vanish if she wasn’t in contact with him. Clearing his throat, Raph shifted subjects back. “Anyway. He used to drive Donnie crazy sometimes, telling people they were twins and all. But now he’s gotten a little more closed up about it.”

This time Leon spoke up before the others, getting tired of being in an uncomfortable topic. “Yeah, well… before it didn't mean that much,” he half huffed trying to play it off as not a big deal even though it was obvious to his family it was something that really bothered him. “Before it was just something for me to have in common with Donnie that you guys didn't. We happened to be the same age, so why not tease you guys and say we were closer than you guys could ever be? But now?... Now…,” the slight sharpness to his words faded with them, being replaced by a slight shudder instead as fresh tears welled in his eyes. “Now it hurts. Now it’s a lot more than what it was before. And if this is what Dee felt like all the time back then now I know why he'd always shut me out. Sometimes it's… sometimes it's just a lot and it's too much.”

Don and Raphael were quiet when Leon explained his side. It made sense then why Leon hadn’t wanted to talk about it. And why he seemed so frustrated and upset. “So… something changed? And you haven’t gotten used to it yet?” Don summarized what he understood so far, and also prodded for further response.

It seemed he wouldn’t get an answer from Leon this time, for he just squeezed his eyes closed and pressed his cheek against Raph, needing a moment to recollect himself. His brothers didn’t seem to want to answer either, so April sat up slightly to take over. “...We almost lost Leo a few months ago,” she explained as softly as she could. It caused Don’s heart to skip a beat, his own unwanted memories flashing briefly through his mind as Raphael sucked a slight hiss. “He was… he…,” April tried to continue, but found she couldn’t say it fully and skipped ahead. “Donnie says it was like having a piece of his heart ripped out. He said he’d always felt something more than others before, but he’d just assumed that it was his own difficulty in recognizing his own emotions. But… when Leo was gone for a moment… It took losing him for Donnie to realize that extra stuff was from Leo and not himself. And after that he said he stopped trying to push it away.”

“.... How did that make things different?” Don asked before he remembered what Leon had said and made his own hypothesis. “It’s more intense for you now?”

“...Yeah…,” Leon admitted, motivated by hearing the thoughts Donnie had expressed a while ago included in the discussion instead of just focusing on him. “Before it was like feeling something from a long distance away. Like it was a faint feeling in the back of my mind. But now… it’s like two people sharing the same body. If that makes sense.”

“Yeah, it makes sense,” Raphael finally commented, a hand rubbing the back of his head to try and dispel the awkwardness he felt about being able to understand something like this. “You said he’d always shut you out before? Why don’t you do the same now?” It was a blunt question, but it was the first thought he had. If something was so hard to deal with, why not just make it take a step back?

It was a fair question, and probably would make sense to just turn off the faucet if he couldn’t handle it. Any smart person would. But Leon found he just couldn’t do that. “...Because he doesn't anymore,” he admitted quietly. “He just accepts everything from me now, even if it’s too much for him and makes him hurt. And I can't just turn it off now that he's so open. Now that it's like how I always wanted it before. It’s just… Sometimes it's just hard… I’m sorry.”

“No, don’t be sorry,” Don was quick to reassure, reaching a hand out to rest on Leon’s knee once again. “I’m sorry for prying into something so personal. But… I have to admit it’s actually really cool.”

The blunt admittance of finding Leon and Donnie’s connection to be a merit earned a snort from Raphael, and broke Lil Mikey out of his sullen silence. “That’s what I said! They share a brain twenty four seven, and don’t even have to talk to know how each other’s feeling. It’s like the ultimate Dr Feelings technique,” he gawked, sounding both in awe and extremely disappointed.

“Doctor what now?” Raphael coughed in surprised mirth.

“Mikey’s persona when he’s playing family therapist,” April answered quickly. “He finds it’s easier to let the others know what he expects and what to expect from him when he gives them names.”

“Oh…. I guess that makes sense,” Raphael admitted, then rubbed the back of his head again as he thought back to the other topic. “Well… while Don thinks it’s cool - and it is cool, I guess - …… I think it just goes to show how impressive you guys are. I had a hard enough time dealing with my own emotions as a teenager. To deal with someone else’s on top of it? …. Let’s just say I can’t blame you if you end up murdering something.”

The last line earned a choked snort from Don as he looked over with a wry grin. “Raph,” he chided lightly, shaking his head. “Let’s keep murder off the table for at least another twenty years.”

The comment caused the rest of the people in the room to silently stare at Don with wide eyes. Raphael having not expected Don to include a timeline, and the others having not expected jokes about murder from the one that seemed to be the most gentle person they’d met so far.

“... Oh, you and Donnie really are a lot more alike than I thought…,” April commented, mentally filing that fact away for later if necessary and earning a barked laugh from Leon.

You can kind of tell who my favorite characters that are by how much I traumatize them and how many terrible things I make them do. Leo and Donnie are closely tied for first.

Leo gets to be a hugely toxic physical, emotional, and (when she was much younger) a sexual abuser.

Donnie gets to be a horrible apathetic sado-masochist who does shit he knows is wrong because he’s too numb to force himself to give a shit

And then Raph is like mostly ok with some severe dissociation, a bit of (early childhood) sexual abuse of Mikey & Donnie, violent urges and cannibalistic intrusive thoughts & impulses

But Mikey is just kind of annoyed at his brothers lmao. His biggest sin is being kind of annoying in a “teenager who just got into social justice” kind of way. Because for the most part, he is correct. He just doesn’t know how to properly communicate things without coming off as preachy.

He’s the least asshole-ish and I always wanted him to be the “nicest” one I guess. but unfortunately, that means I’m less interested in him because I can’t write him being insanely awful to someone. He can be mean but not the same way as his siblings can, because his main thing is being more emotionally intelligent and hating how his brothers let their trauma control them.

Sorry Mikey I love you, truly. It’s unfortunate it shook out this way 😔 I’ll make it up to him later. After I’m done with the Raph & Slash comic I want to try to do one for Mikey.

Is normally go straight to Donnie since I clearly like him more, but Donnie has his own dedicated fanfiction I need to keep updating lol

Sunsets Duo's overlooked relationship

Analysis for Mikey's and Raphael's relationship.

Let's start this off with something easy, people tend to ignore Mikey's and Raphael's dynamic or brush it off as Mikey disliking Raphael.

Which is just plain wrong, they have reasons for why they act the way they do.

It's a bit easier to tell, why Mikey dislikes Raphael protectiveness solely for the 'Hot Soup: The Game' and or 'Men vs. Sewer' episode but people are way too fixated on that and ignore every other episode to see, where Raphael is coming from.

Just look at Mikey anytime, he's by himself without his brothers, there is definitely a pattern going on.

This fight or flight instinct kicks in, anytime something doesn't go as planned. He freezes on spot and it takes him a very long time to run away as a last result.

(Todd literally had to carry Mikey away from Meatsweats after Meatswats was about to punch them in this tree like monster form and another time Leo had to pull Mikey away from the robo ghost)

This is all linked to Mikey overthinking situations.

Mikey needs to be told, what to do.

This is something he learned from Raphael and Donnie, the training session with Raphael made him a strong fighter no doubt and Donnie's advice is just as helpful for Mikey in certain situations but this is also why Mikey is very reliant on others, specifically Raphael and Donnie.

He never learned how to do his own thing in missions without his brothers. He always just listens and you can see this very strongly in 'Repo Mantis' episode with Donnie.

Like yes he still does impulsive stuff due to his ADD but regarding the mission, he mainly was listening.

This is also an episode in which Mikey pleads for Donnie to not call Raphael and Leo for help.

Everytime he gets to shine by himself through battles, he can do just fine but anytime he overthinks something, he usually tend to mimic his brothers fighting style and of course loses that way.

It's not helping that usually his ideas were never taken into considerations. They were usually brushed off by Raphael and or Donnie as nonsense or something to immediately correct, which amplifies Mikey's anxiety to do something wrong on his own without his brothers being there to tell him what to do.

They may have good intentions but those good intentions are also hindering Mikey's growth.

It's why his first solo mission was an entirely new experience for Mikey. He wanted to do things his own way and proof Raphael that he can be trusted.

It's why he got serious after he got the call from Raphael and managed to fend off Cassandra pretty well.

Now with this in mind, we also got some canon confirmation regarding Raphael.

Raphael possess emotional intelligence.

Which means, Raphael completely understands Mikey's fears but has no clue, it's him being a cause of this.

(Donnie understands Mikey's needs as well but in a different way and luckily isn't protective to the extreme as Raphael)

This is why Raphael gets very protective over Mikey the most. He worries about him way too much and in turn Mikey is starting to get irritated by this.

He even gets passive aggressive, especially in this scene below.

It's also not helping that Mikey is pretty sensitive as a whole and all of his brothers know.

Mikey is the most expressive in the family when it comes to his sad or scared emotions and doesn't shy away from showing this, not even to strangers.

The fact that Mikey always seems to be on Raphael's back is very notable as well, which means Raphael is Mikey's safe space and Raphael is fully aware of this fact.

Those are points as to why Raphael is overprotective to Mikey, he doesn't do this for no reason.

Now the question is, why does Raphael not consider Mikey's ideas in missions and why does Raphael struggle to trust Mikey, if he is emotional intelligent as the creator says?

It's pure stress, Raphael is very stressed in a lot of episodes, he can't always keep track on everyone's emotional side.

He is just a minor that happens to take care of his younger brothers, we also can't forget that he is just 1 year older than Donnie and Leo, the way Raphael reacts, it's pretty realistic honestly.

If everything is quiet and nothing stresses him out, he's right there to comfort Mikey, if needed.

Now to the trust question, I will elaborate.

People usually pick the 'Mrs. Cuddles' card to show that Mikey apparently hates Raphael.

No this is quiet the opposite, sounds weird but the reason why Mikey acted uncharacteristically mean towards Raphael, is purely because he can't grasp the idea that Raphael, a big guy, who is the strongest and most reliable person, would be afraid of an insignificant plush like Mrs Cuddles.

They joked about it because it's funny for them but then Mikey gets irritated that the person who always have answers just doesn't have it and is shows to be scared...of a plush of all things.

I mean in the very same episode, Mikey screams his lungs out because he hopes that Raphael will go safe him, despite being with Leo.

Now you can perhaps see, why Raphael was worried sick for Mikey in the 'Hot Soup: The Game' episode and struggles to trust Mikey to do things on his own.

Both Raphael and Mikey are unintentionally hurting each other, Raphael doesn't mind to take care of Mikey but sometimes it's just too much and he needs a break. Whereas Mikey needs to have a voice in certain missions, figure himself out and not rely heavily on Raphael to do all the lifting.

The latest episodes and season was showing us growth for both Raphael and Mikey that seemingly went unnoticed 'One Man's Junk' is the ultimate episode for that.

Mikey and Donnie already went once to this junkyard at the ‘Repo Mantis’ episode and did fine, it’s why Donnie and Mikey wanted to get to Repo because they knew how this guy ticks.

But Raphael didn't listen to Mikey and wanted to go with his plan instead, he had no idea that Mikey and Donnie prior went on an adventure with Repo as their opponent.

As before, Mikey was able to tell that this isn't his fault, he almost finished the mission in ease with Donnie just like he almost finished his first solo mission.

Raphael is the one who kind of ruined Mikey's progress, even if his actions were intended to be good.

I think right this moment Raphael realizes this, after Mikey communicated this to him.

In the end, he decides to go with Mikey's plan, it may sound silly but at the same time it sounds like this is going to work, which it did.

This is where the relationship of the two, slowly started to get mended.

How communication can solve issues like this!

Moving on from S1, let’s talk about S2 with another sorta Mikey and Raphael episode with Draxum included in 'Reparin' the Baron'. Now since Mikey's confidence is geared up by a lot after Raphael has shown to trust his plans and by default trust him, he wants to help Draxum in his own terms, which confuses Raphael because he can't for his own sanity understand why. He isn't necessarily listening to Mikey but for good reasons, Draxum was their enemy the entire run time in this series, Raphael jumped to the conclusion that Mikey is putting himself in danger without any plans or idea on what he is doing.

But seeing that all of the Hamato family joined this apartment of Draxum, it's a bit clearer to Raphael that Mikey didn't do this with nothing planned ahead, no.

Mikey wants everyone to see that Draxum is part of their family and should be treated as such. He wants to convince everyone, including Draxum that he is part of their family.

So Mikey chose Raphael to come join him with Draxum.

This episode as a whole shows us how much Mikey and Raphael have grown to understand each other much better. Mikey is not afraid anymore to pursue Raphael into his plan because he knows Raphael will get worried the most out of everyone and wants to show him that he can take care of things on his own.

Raphael on the other hand didn't downright tell Mikey that this is stupid or dismisses Mikey altogether after being calmed down enough, he softly asks Mikey if this is really a good idea and doubts Mikey's word that it will work out but still he goes along with Mikey's idea.

Everything was fine, until the bounty hunters found them. Mikey is the first one to step up, ready to defend Draxum and Raphael readied himself to help Mikey, if things goes south but instead Draxum ran off and left Mikey to fend himself, meanwhile Raphael got upset at Draxum for leaving Mikey behind.

Mikey still wants to help Draxum but obviously Raphael doesn't want to anymore, not after the stunt Draxum has pulled on Mikey.

This is where he takes the time to listen to Mikey again and Mikey’s reasoning was still the same. 'He made us, he is family'. Raphael's realization was creeping up on him that Mikey let something this awful slide because he sees Draxum as family.

Sometimes I get a feeling that this face Raphael is making, is pure shock and a bit of guilt right here.

He doesn't want to abandon Mikey's feelings, the same way Draxum abandoned Mikey. He reluctantly agrees to help, not for Draxum but for Mikey's sake.

Now this is more of a theory but still possibly part of this analysis.

A lot of fans think that the fall out between Mikey and Raphael started, when they were very young.

I for one thing that either S2 or S3 was going to be this fall out episode between Mikey and Raphael, it would have happened not because Mikey goes on a streak of doing more by himself and not relying as much on Raphael as time goes by.

Knowing Raphael lost his leader role to Leo and the way how Raphael treated Mikey for a long time, makes him question if he really was a good leader to begin with and I think Raphael would ultimately believe that Mikey never needed him in the first place.

Which is just plain wrong because Mikey still needs Raphael, even if he acts more independent.

I feel like Donnie rarely learns his lessons about how his behavior affects people. And I think that’s a lot because he’s extremely babied by his family when it comes to emotions. Not in the “protecting his feeling”way of babying but in the sense he’s not trusted in emotional situations. Mikey tried to teach him in the episode “Breaking Purple” but it didn’t really work. Again because he kind of being babied about it. Mikey’s whole “seminar” came off as extremely condescending. What really changed Donnie’s mind was seeing Sheldon in danger and a legitimate heart to heart. I know I’m kinda just rambling at this point but I just don’t think telling him he’s wrong works because he just takes it as an insult rather than constructive criticism.

mmmm soft disagree. i dont really think they baby him at all. there are several instances of raph shouting at him or even swatting him, and they're very quick to call him out when he does things that actually upset or anger them (+ yeah, he mostly learns his lessons through SEEING the consequences of his bad decisions. in smart lair shelldon was hacked because he programmed him to favor him in the first place, in mind meld he comes face to face with how much he does actually miss and need his family as they are-- and i've talked extensively about donnie's gifts and how people are too harsh to him there and seen several posts about it already so im not gonna yap about it again). they are comedically rude to each other about these things, and donnie's tendency to shirk responsibility is contradicted by his swiftness to self-correct in literally every other way. just because he doesn't verbally acknowledge it or jokes around it doesn't mean he doesn't do it.

doctor feelings is designed to be condescending and i think that's just how mikey is, really. he'd do it to leo or raph too, and he does act similar to draxum who is a grown man and his psuedo-father-- i think its more reflective of mikey as a person than how he sees donnie. when donnie is actually being alarmingly hurtful to other people, it's the result of him not feeling heard; that's usually what it always is, with the exception of breaking purple i suppose. i cannot pathologize that outside of him being a neurotic teen parent who doesn't know how to act because of his own daddy issues lmao

#ask #i see a lot of people who will talk about how donnie is never held accountable while making leo into a martyr and a victim of his family #and i think both counts are wrong and i dont think anyone is a victim here. they consistently hold each other accountable all the time #its probably why im put off by talking about anyone in the cast like this .... i do think you have a point its just not how i see it #i think the crux of it that needs to be understood is that these comical slapstick situations that are Horrible and traumatic to us #are like proportionate to arguing over the laundry for them-- such is the case of donnie's gifts and smart lair for example #they're acting like siblings bickering over moving shit around on the chore chart.#and that's partially just because theyre in a cartoon but i also think its just because that's kind of how their life is #they're quite literally built different #when i say i dont like how donnie treats april i understand its comedic and not a big deal i just dont think its FUNNY lmao

Gender and Sexuality HCs

First of all, they're all queer. Unless they are *only* attracted to mutant turtles (no tcest here), they're all queer. Just by technical definition. So, we are going to take for granted that they are attracted to other species, and use that as a baseline.

The specifics, however...

Leo

Gender: Cis Masc (he/him)

Sexuality: Gay

He honestly doesn't think about it all that much, because things like gender are really not important to him, but if you ask him, he is masculine. He has more important things to worry about than having pointless arguments.

It took Leo a long time to come around to his sexuality. Not because of any kind of homophobia, but because for most of his life he pushed away any thoughts of sexuality at all. He had the safety of his family to consider, not to mention the city at large, and if he laser focused on his *mission,* he wouldn't have time to think about and want things that could never happen. At least, he hoped.

Eventually, he'd stopped kidding himself. Trysts were pretty normal for him. "Stress relief" he called them. He didn't much care who it was. He had his preferences. Eventually, he fell into a hole bordering on addiction. Worried for his welfare, his father called upon one of Leonardo's oldest friends. He's not sure what was said in the secrecy of his eldest's bedroom, but he has always had a sixth sense for what his boys need, and Leonardo emerged for patrol the next evening far more at peace than Splinter had seen him in a long time.

Raph

Gender: Cis Masc (he/him)

Sexuality: Straight

Raphael is the Gods' answer to toxic masculinity. No one can say this guy isn't what peak male performance looks like. With equal parts strength and softness, he'll challenge anyone who says that emotions make you less masc. Our boy knows how important it is to occasionally have a good old fashioned breakdown. Life is hard, and tears are healing. He'll correct you if you misgender him, but it's usually a light hearted correction with a throwaway joke because he's not a dick. He'd have no problem with being fem, he's just not.

My guy is straight as an arrow. He can definitely appreciate the male aesthetic, but for him it's always from more of a respect angle. He has ZERO problem telling a man he's beautiful, but Big Red loves the ladies. When they used to play pretend as kids, Raph got the girl. They could have the treasure, the glory, whatever. He just wanted a princess he could ride off into the sunset with. He never grew out of that.

He's a huge ally (both literally and figuratively), and is always ready to jump in and beat the piss out of some hateful douchebags if there's trouble on the rainbow side of town.

Donnie

Gender: Non-binary - doesn't care (he/they)

Sexuality: Demi

"The only thing binary about me is my code."

Donnie isn't an idiot. He's well aware that the only true "binaries" that exist were made by people, not nature. Evolution could never be that grossly limited. And if you ask him, he will tell you exactly that, before moving the conversation on to more important things.

Autism and physical intimacy can be *extremely* difficult to navigate. For many *many* years, Donatello just assumed he was fully asexual. The only time he ever really felt "urges" was during the Season, and his "preferences" had very little to do with that.

Until he meets his person.

It takes a while, but eventually he starts letting them see what's behind all the tech and flashing lights, and as they grow closer, he starts feeling things he doesn't actually understand (complete with frustration bordering on violece; more than one project ends up in pieces). The paradigm shift takes a *while* to wrap his head around because it doesn't feel *weird* when they touch him. He even *wants* it, sometimes. It isn't until his first Season after meeting them that he figures out what some of these feelings even *are*. These days, if you ask him about his sexuality, he won't look up from his current project, he'll just point at his partner across the lab.

Mikey

Gender: All of 'em

Sexuality: All of 'em

His Royal Majesty, Hamato Michaelangelo, Lord High Sovereign and King of the Queers! *uproarious applause*

I'm sorry, did you say drag? Did you say *gender bending*? DID YOU SAY GLITTER AND FEATHERS AND SEQUINS? Great! Welcome to the party. Mike's been here since since the lights dropped. Mike's philosophy on both gender and sexuality is the same: "It's all love, baby!"

He isn't human, so human "rules" about equipment, identity, and preference never really applied to him. It only really came up once in their early teens, when Raphael was being a dick. Mike responded by trying to become more "masculine," and was injured out on a mission. Raphael apologized at his bedside later. He'd only been trying to get under his shell, he didn't really care if Mike was "manly or whatever." Which was really great, because neither did Mike.

Other than that one instance, he's never been pressured to choose *any* of those things. So why the hell would he? From the outside looking in, he can see the whole sandbox. Why stick to one corner when he could play wherever with whoever, however he wanted? And how could he possibly stand for *everyone* not having the same right to explore this big beautiful playground?

He makes a run through Greenwich Village every morning on his way home to check on his people. It usually only takes one "conversation" with bigoted assholes for them to realize they're "in the wrong neighborhood, my dudes."
