the solo era, my somewhat incoherent ramblings….
There is constantly so much ridiculous, inane discourse and nonsense about the ‘solo era’, from both tkkrs, haters and solos alike, even sometimes insecure jikookers, both on twitter, and here. I have had enough of it, so here is what I think happened in early 2023, using mostly facts, and some potential logic.
(disclaimer – for this suspend any disbelief you hold about Jikook as a couple, for this purpose, and in real life, they are)
Jimin came back from Paris in late January and went into full Face mode. I think that it was around this time that they either made the decision to not see each other, or barely, likely so Jimin could focus, or as a consequence of his business. If the former, I imagine this would be for around two months, so February and March.
JK is on a break from work. Come February 1st, JK decides to randomly start doing lives, at home, without ‘company permission’. As an aside - despite people subsequently getting used to his lives, and him doing a few of them, he didn’t really do that many during February. He did one on the 1st, one on the 3rd, and then the 11th. There was then a big gap, and he next came live on 28thFebruary. That’s it. It wasn’t as if it was everyday. (I’m saying this as a way of highlighting that it’s not as if he were bored and going live every single day during this period).
So from the get go, Jimin commented on the lives. Often Jimin would say where he was, what he was doing, and used terms of endearment (my ‘shrimp’…I want to tie your hair back, have fun with Army and Bam, I will be back after work). Hardly what you would do if you were broken up/avoiding someone/distant/fell out etc etc. Equally, every time Jimin commented, JK would light up with his Jimin Hyung smile ™. Again, not something you would do automatically if you were broken up/distant/fell out etc etc.
This continued in all three lives, the live at the Boxing class especially stood out, due to the obvious familiarity between JK, the coach, and Jimin. JK saying Jimin would come with him again when he has time (highlighted especially because Hobi was also in the comments but this attending boxing lessons applied only to Jimin, thank you K Army for highlighting the nuances of the honorifics or lack there of).
There was then a big gap between lives, with JK at this point, as we now know, going to visit Tae in Hawaii to sky dive and hang out. There is some debate whether this is also where he went to the USA to do the CK shoot – which was filmed by late March, so the timeframe fits for this. At some point, we found out in April, that JK also visited Jimin whilst he was practicing his dance for SMFP2, he was wearing full CK, which links to the fact the partnership was underway, and I would estimate this was either mid-February or early March before Jimin flew out to USA for Fallon.
Either way, my point being, Jimin was obviously very busy, JK was on a ‘break’ from work, but did actually do his CK work during this time frame of Feb/March.
JK went live next on 4th March, and this is where he gets drunk and fell asleep on his live. This was probably the first live that was hard to watch for me, as it did seem like he was struggling. I know people like to avoid this somewhat, but it did seem like that to me, and that is fair enough, heck he is human. He was also struggling with people stalking him at the gym, and at his home, which he addressed in such a beautiful way. Boundaries people.
I want to add here, that Jimin also went live a handful of times during this period, in the lead up to Face, at the company. He would often mention JK in his own lives, though to my knowledge/memory at that point, JK didn’t comment on his much. During one, he fondly spoke about JK and Euphoria and would often recall what JK did in his last live, including farting, falling asleep and singing ‘unholy’.  On Hobi’s birthday, at the company, Jimin joined him for a bit, it was extremely cute to see them, and Jimin dancing to ‘killing me softly’ is just (chefs kiss). I have seen solos/antis and haters wonder why JK didn’t join them if he missed them, turns out he was actually in Hawaii, so that is why.
By mid-March, Jimin was gearing up for the release of Face. He flew to NYC on 13th March. JK went live three/four times the next day, White Day, each live he dressed differently, and at one point he explained to Jimin, who was in the comments, what he was doing. I don’t think I personally will ever forget the Prince Eric (cough my og gay awakening) vibes he gave with that white shirt, but moving on….
During this series of lives, JK became increasingly melancholic, in my opinion. He had his mood lights on, he was playing music, he had a candle, and he was drinking. By the time the lives ended, he told Army to look forward to midnight, because ‘something amazing is coming’, that something being Jimin’s teaser for ‘Set me Free Pt2’. And he was right, it was truly amazing.
Face was released 24th March 2023, and just wow. It took the world a little while, but eventually we realised that there was a hidden track on the physical album, one which had background vocals that sounded eerily similar to JK’s. Turns out they were. On the beautiful song ‘Letter’, JK providing background vocals towards the end of the song. The  weverse version of the album containing a booklet of handwritten original lyrics from Jimin’s notes (again K Army, thank you for the context of words used). The track listing in the booklet hidden in white so you can barely see it. Jimin never speaking on the fact that JK provided those background vocals (not until we saw the production diary later on in the year). A fan song. Yeah…moving on.
At some point, I cannot remember the date, but in late March OT7 had a dinner together. Yoongi posted a pic on Instagram of 5 of them, stating Jimin and Tae had gone off earlier. A day or so after this, JM posted on wevserse ‘I miss you’, to which JK replied ‘me too’.
(side note- my memory is fuzzy at the best of times so if any of this is the wrong way wrong I apologise, but this is the jist of it all)
28th March, JM went live on the way back from a music show recording in the car, he said he was on his way back to the company. He thanked fans for coming to see him. Someone in the comments asked him if they had seen JKs pictures – to which he replied, yes, with a phew face. JK appeared in the comments not long after this, he commented a total of 19 ish times on the live. JM engaging from that point only with him, it was like we ‘fans’ ceased to exist. JK said he wanted to ‘come see Jimin’s next show’ to which Jimin replied, this was the last one, he told JK not to worry as he had come see him practice (at this point, we fans hadn’t seen this by way of any SM or BB, that came later…), and Jimin said that ‘time flies’. Anti’s/haters and solos like to use this quote as meaning JK had no clue about JM’s schedule – I think these people lack common sense. The most important part of the conversation was when JK declared himself as Jimin’s fan. The rest is whatever re schedule, heck at one point in a live prior Jimin himself said he didn’t know what time a life was planned for the next day, so there we go.
Later on, in the early hours of the morning after the 28th March conversation, JK went live. In this live he spoke about CK, the pictures just having been released. He then asked himself what he came live for…turns out it was to literally just watch Jimin on Suchwita. Boy got a bit frustrated when he couldn’t find the video on YouTube, when he did find it, he settled back to watch Jimin on the show, and had to apologise later to Army because as he said ‘he tends not to talk when he’s focussed’. Recently K Army have also pointed out the way JK describes Jimins way of thinking here in this live. It’s truly lovely and endearing to hear he speaks so fondly about Jimin.
This ends March, and Face promotions come to an end. In essence, we are talking potentially about two months. Two months where they didn’t see, or didn’t see each other very often. Not to minimise how hard this would be for them, I am sure it was, it seemed to be especially on JKs part, but as Jimin said ‘time flies’.
By mid-April, after JK had been to California and Coachella, (he was starting to officially to work), Hobi enlisted, and this is where we get to see them on a bangtan bomb, in real time, with the hug that was felt around the world. K Army letting us know that they were most certainly spent the night before drinking together.
I know in reality after this as fans we still did not see them together much, but it my believe that this is when they began to spend more normalised time together. Why? Call it a gut feeling, and the fact that JK was brighter, his whole demeanour changed once he was back working, and likely that he was seeing Jimin more often again, what with Face promotions being over, and likely planning for the show and his work was starting. To contextualise this, we now know that Jimin was finishing Muse during this period after Face, we know he went to the USA again, attended Yoongi’s concert, recorded ‘Who’, and then went to London in May. The next time we saw them together, is in late June, at Yoongi’s concert in Seoul, with Tae. They looked normal, happy, and touchy. Weeks later, mid-July, JK flies to NYC, and a day later Jimin follows him. We didn’t know why at the time, we now know, and the rest, as they say, is history. But for JK and his lives, they did continue, and he often would just go live when Jimin flew out of the country, he did this in April (specifically after the premiere he attended with Tae), in May (he had also done this in March). It became a running joke within the jikook space, but once is a coincidence, 4/5 times is not.
instagram
All of this to say, I personally think there was only really those two ish months, February- March, that they truly did not see each other much, if at all, but by late March, they were. So really, we are talking about Face preparations and promotions. We do know they saw each other a few times from that we saw as fans, because JK went to see Jimin’s dance practice (though we didn’t see his arrival…side eye), and they met at the OT7 meal in late March, and then Hobi’s enlistment BB.
What I do also think, and it is obviously what they said about the show, that the show was born from this period of time. They hadn’t been anywhere together in a while. By that though, I mean it was planned in advance (anyone who thinks otherwise is daft, because they would have needed coordination of staff and equipment , permits, and plans – the Forbes article said both were involved in the planning. Jimin certainly made clear he made it happen.) I know this whole narrative of it being last minute/sprung upon, was from JK and what he said to Yoongi in Suchwita, but nah, that cannot be what happened in terms of the planning. They may have waited until a right period of time, the logistics planed out, and the timing left to the last minute, but otherwise no. second to this, a mutual informed me an Army on X, who visited the kayak place, was told by the owner that the location was scouted three months prior to the shoot, which would be around April/May time.
I do also think, and this is a bit controversial, that the show was an idea prior from Jimin, but probably also as a grand gesture of sorts. Hear me out, if I am right, Jimin was busy with Face, and bless him, barely had any time – P Dogg told us how hard he was practicing daily, JK was concerned for his health already in Feb. He often told BB about his eating, and what meal he wanted to eat. He was working so hard. And yes, in periods like this, especially considering this was solo work, but in any line of work where your partner is busy, the other party ‘suffers’ so to speak. (by that I do not mean that JK was unable to survive without Jimin, (or vice Versa) he did just fine, but it was obvious to anyone with eyes, that he was missing him, especially on the late March Jimin focussed live and his ‘miss you’ reply (kinda gives it away), that and his eye crinkles of happiness hugging Jimin at Hobi’s enlistment). But yeah, Jimin was busy, he was promoting, and I think as a gesture Jimin pulled through with the show idea. My timeline also links well with this, given that the Kayak place said the location was scouted three months prior to July, so April/May, just as Jimin finished Face promo.
I also think, again, controversial maybe, that Jimin did this as a grand gesture of putting JK first. By that, I mean we know that he did spend a lot of time in the solo era with Hobi, Yoongi and others. He mentioned speaking to them often, in lives (Hobi and Yoongi), he went to D-Day a couple of times, he supported Hobi, and they supported him at his shows and shoots. He mentioned to Fallon that he kept most in contact with them both, not Tae, not Joon, not JK, and despite Jin being enlisted, we know Jimin visited him with Hobi. Now I am in no way saying that is a bad thing, or that is not allowed, or that he did not in fact see JK, we simply do not know. But, I do think that part of the reason for the show is that they could be seen together in content. I have held his belief for a wee while now, but I am almost certain that is a part of it. I think this feeling was reinforced seeing the different perceptive of Jimin entering the restaurant in JK’s documentary ‘I am still’ and the smile on JKs face to the camera. His ‘finally’ – to me means not only that he is getting his Jimin for quality time. JK said over and over how happy he was, how these were the best trips of his life, how grateful he was to Jimin for joining him in the USA. This thought is also reinforced with the sheer confidence JK asked to go to Jimin’s or for Jimin to come to his, in his ‘bed live’ in late July, after filming he must have thought, why not. Turns out, for whatever reason, Jimin was not willing to go that far, but he tried bless him.
I feel that it was a choice, a choice they made for what reason only they know, to essentially go from seeming like they were not seeing each other (if they did or did not), to state that in the show in the car conversation, and to make out like they hadn’t in lives – to literally enlist together late 2023, (to the shock of all the fandom) and then in 2024, to have content show that no, they did see each other. It was such a 180 switch, quite dramatic in fact, that the only thing I can think of is that it was a choice made on purpose. Someone in fact asked this in a post, why did JM release Muse whilst he is in the military? But similarly, why the timing of all of it? I know it was for content whilst they were away, for fans to enjoy, but the timing of all projects is obviously worked out and discussed, this is no different, the choice to film but not state what they were doing at the time (for JK to go live and Jimin being in the same room/hotel ready to film but we got nothing, so much for fan service). It was a choice to deny they saw each other much if at all, to have Jimin tell Joonie in MMM2 (content which came out in Muse promo June 2024) that he and JK drink together often, to have Jimin saying in the behind of Jeju that he spent the night prior to flying out, at JKs and he cooked for him, despite having just landed from NYC (where he ran in the airport). In the Muse puzzle, that his fave food was by JK, as if Army and solos could guess that?
It was a choice.
It was also a choice to film the show at all, they didn’t have to, they didn’t need to, and seemingly a lot of the fandom sadly didn’t care that they did (side eye solos, haters and the cult) So although they said they filmed it for fans, they didn’t need to at all. We would never have demanded, never have suspected either. They are already famous, they already are wealthy, talented and have both Army and solo fans (mostly rude ignorant ones unfortunately), so why? We could get to the chicken and egg of it all, about them needing permits to travel abroad around enlistment, but still it’s a choice. It’s a choice to film, a choice to travel and film, etc. Just food for thought.
To conclude because I’ve rambled long enough, no haters/antis/insecure people and solo muppets, they did not not see each other, they did, and they are only the bits we know by the way, same for all the members. We only know what they want us to know. This is not a case of ‘pic or it didn’t happen’, they don’t owe us anything. (Please repeat that like a mantra).
When they speak about not seeing each other when busy, perhaps also just sit back and think about them having to navigate their solo work, being a (potentially) queer couple in SK navigating that, how they chose to present themselves in comparison to the others, their upcoming enlistment (and the fact they were applying to do that together behind the scenes, and they did it). The planning and execution of a show, etc etc. When you wonder about why they did not go live together, maybe watch the minute or so they were together for Jimin’s live watch of ‘production diary’ and take notes.
I also want to add, because again, there is some inane discourse by solos going around here about support, and JK’s supposed lack of towards Jimin in this era. Firstly, it is not up to us as fans to decide what level of support that either Jimin or Jungkook are happy with, and what they want or require from each other, as friends or otherwise. And secondly, it is simply just not true even from what we did see, that they did not support each other. So, just stop. Grow up, stop hating real people with a very real bond, and go out and get some life experience, for your own benefit if nothing else.
&& use common sense please, oh and be respectful at all times to our 7.
Thank you
💜

how well do you think crewel n deuce get along? i mean theyre pretty similar: delinquents trying to go straight n narrow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
… Was Crewel a delinquent??? It’s true that he did not get along with Trein, caused mischief/rebelled, and frequently got into fights, but that honestly just sounds like the average NRC student to me and not a delinquent, especially not to the same capacity as Deuce.
When Twst talks the concept of Deuce as a delinquent, they mean specifically a Japanese yankii (ヤンキー), which is a certain kind associated with its own traits and not just being rowdy or rebellious. For example, yankii are stereotypically linked to motorcycle gangs, dying their hair bright colors or bleaching their hair blonde, wear gaudy or “trashy” clothes, cut classes to smoke and drink, refuse to be polite (they have their own slang and call adults by their first names, which is considered very impolite in Japanese), form gangs/wear gang symbols, get modify their bodies (tattoos, shaved brows, etc.), and do the yankii-zuwari or yankii squat, (ヤンキー座り), and We see Deuce fitting into many of these. His hobby is blastcycles, his hair used to be bleached blonde, he has little fashion sense (remember his pink leopard print track suit?), he admits to cutting classes in middle school, he modified his hair + experimented with hair accessories and says in his Relax in Room vignettes that he shaved his brows, he speaks completely different when his delinquent switch is flipped, and, in the manga, he is depicted in the infamous squat. As far as we know, Crewel did not do any of these things in his youth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce and Crewel have definitely both mellowed out more, but for Deuce it feels like a conscious effort to better himself and for Crewel it feels like he just simmered down a bit as he entered adulthood and gained new responsibilities. After all, Crewel still encourages his students to act out every now and again to let loose their pent-up energy—just not in his classroom!! He also still talks back to and argued with Trein, but then is quick to cover it up with a veneer of sarcastic politeness. They’re coworkers now, so their dynamic is different than that of teacher and student. Deuce, meanwhile, is trying so hard to study, be polite (he now calls everyone by their surnames plus an appropriate honorific), and not reveal any of his delinquent tendencies (ex. being violent/fighting).
That aside, I don’t know if “getting along” is how I’d describe their relationship given that Crewel is seen scolding us first years for talking during class or not paying attention. However, Deuce does seem to like Crewel, as he states both in his Labwear vignettes and his Labwear voice lines that Crewel is willing to tutor him/give remedial lessons for hours and hours until he finally understands the material. This is something brought up in other vignettes as well, including his recent Relax in Room ones. I get the impression that Deuce is often in these extra lessons to keep from failing Potionology, Magic Analysis, and other classes, but that he still tries his best and accepts all the help he can get. Crewel might get frustrated with Deuce at times (especially seeing as how Deuce is bad at math, which is kind of an important thing in the sciences), but I think Crewel appreciates Deuce’s fire and willingness to never give up.

Soshiro Yonaga's Story
For his birthday on May 15th, I translated Sou's pre-release short story (original) written by Shin Towada (lead scenario writer) with concept art by the artist Lownine. No real spoilers as it takes place before the newcomers' performance as usual. I opted to keep some honorifics in this one between Sou and Kisa just because I couldn't find a good solution around that in the time I had for this. Hopefully it doesn't read too out of place.
Tumblr media
That day we shared a dream together, and even now I'm still in it. --Where is this? His field of vision opens abruptly. Warm rays of sunlight fall gently at his feet. Unable to grasp the situation, he looks around at his surroundings. A single torii gate beckons him. Beyond the gate lies a sleepy shrine nodding off to sleep. Memories come to Soshiro Yonaga's mind at the sight of it. "Sou-chan!" As soon as he connects this place to his memories, he hears the voice of a child ring out. Yonaga's body jumps inside as it takes in the sound of that affectionate nickname again. Reliving it in his mind, he sees three kids racing towards him. The one running in the lead is a wide-eyed adorable girl. And right behind her is a boy a couple years older. A boy with a refined beauty who quite resembles the girl. Trailing behind them is the sort of typical boy you'd find anywhere, running with all his might. --That's me. Yonaga instinctively takes in a breath. And with that breath comes a deep understanding. This is a dream. He's watching a dream of the distant past. "Sou-chan! C'mon hurry up, let's play pretend!" The girl takes the young Yonaga's hand. --…chan Yonaga calls out the girl's name, but the voice does not come out. The kids pass him by, dashing through the gate towards the shrine. --Hey, wait…! Trying to chase after them, Yonaga also passes through the torii gate. The moment he does, the figures of the three kids go dim, as if being mocked by his own mind. Not just the kids, but the gate, the shrine, even Yonaga himself starts to disappear. "Okay, you play the lead today Sou-chan!" The only thing left is the children's playful voices. --Wait. "Please, wait!!" Yonaga shouts. He realizes he's in bed with his hand stretched up into the air like in the beginning of a story. "Ah…" Light shines through a crack in the curtain. Vrr, vrr--his morning phone alarm urges him out of bed. It's morning. "Ugh…" He rubs his eyes to avoid facing it, feeling a bit embarrassed about his hand stretched towards the empty air. He's at Univeil Drama School as one of the new first-years of the Quartz class. "I've gotta get out of bed." Another day begins.
He sluggishly finishes getting ready, shoves down some breakfast from the dorm cafeteria, and then heads off to school a little late. "Um…." At Univeil, the mornings consist of rigorous study of a wide variety of topics pertaining to theatre under the expert faculty. Students are permitted to choose their own courses, meaning that those in the same class wouldn't all study the same subjects. Knowing this, Yonaga scans the classroom thoroughly. (Ah…) There's a student of short stature with a delicate frame who demonstrates a strength of will like no one else. It's the same person from the dream, the childhood friend he used to play pretend with. And now they're assigned to the same class in the same grade. "Morn-" "Class is starting now" Unfortunately the teacher appears before he can hardly open his mouth. Despite his interest being on his friend, the class mercilessly continues. He rushes in to take his seat, stealing one last glimpse before focusing on the lesson. After the morning lessons crammed full of new things to learn, time moves into the afternoon. Quartz class rehearsals start from this point onwards. Students from all years gather in the rehearsal room. They're practicing for the newcomers' performance planned for the end of May. "Okay, okaaay, now let's run through everything again so far!" (Neji) As a place that recognizes independence, Univeil Drama School has come to revolve around its performances and students. Kokuto Neji is the class leader directing Quartz. He's a genius, handling everything from the scripts to the stage. "All you older students, watch the first-years carefully to help them out." Neji energetically gives out directions. "Okay then, all the Jeannes come over here," says Quartz's Al Jeanne, Sarafumi Takashina, as he steps forward. He always acts friendly towards everyone, but the overwhelmingly brilliant flowering aura he radiates makes Yonaga nervous just standing next to him. And Fumi isn't the only one like this. There's also Kai Mutsumi, the Jack Ace with a diligent expression who leads the Jacks, and Mitsuki Shirota, the tresor who gives out his opinions on songs without an ounce of intimidation from Neji. And then there's Neji who brings everyone together to propel them further and further forward. Just these people alone make quite the impression. Yonaga's anxiety reaches a point where he questions if it's even okay for someone like him to be standing here right now. And he seems far from the only new student feeling the pressure.
"…Okay everyooone, let's take a break!" The second after hearing Neji's order, the first-years collapse to sit down with worn-out expressions. Yonaga also takes in a big breath as if trying to quench a dry throat. But there's a few in the group acting differently. "Hey, Orimaki's dancing with someone." Suzu Orimaki. Yonaga instinctively searches the room for a certain person. The noisy pounding in his chest gives him a feeling of who it might be. (Ah…) The one facing Suzu as a dance partner is Yonaga's same childhood friend. Suzu likely asked her so they could try out what they had practiced in rehearsal. She-- That's right, she's a girl. His female childhood friend is here at Univeil, the school where boys play all the male and female roles. She enrolled at the all-boys school while hiding her gender. "All right, let's do it!" "Yeah!" She and Suzu exchange words then she takes his hand to begin the dance. The two of them have no stage experience so there's a lot of rough patches. Yet even so, there's something about them that captures people's attention. "Hmm, these two stand out." As their class lead, Neji watches the pair with great interest whilst muttering to himself. Fumi standing next to him agrees and says, "They sure do. I haven't had a chance to see Orimaki dance yet, but he really stands out in whatever he does. Doesn't he, Kai?" "…It's because the other one is so good at supporting him." Kai's eyes focus on the girl dancing with Suzu.
"That's typically a Jack's role," Shirota grumbles with an exasperated expression. Still, the third-years seem to have come to a consensus. "Well…the two of them do have good chemistry though." These words stab Yonaga deep in the chest. They're sharp at first before turning into a dull lasting ache. (I need some water.) Giving himself an excuse to leave the practice room, he starts chugging water like it's his job. But no matter how much he drinks, it's never enough to quench the thirst.
Practice continues as the sun quietly sets and the lights on the school grounds are lit. Neji finally declares that practice is over. The trio of Yonaga, Suzu, and the childhood friend all leave the practice room together. "Whew, I'm beat!" Despite his words, Suzu still seems full of energy. A single nod takes everything for Yonaga to muster, both his legs and his eyelids feeling heavy. "But the upperclassmen are amazing, aren't they?" Suzu says while thinking back on their practice. "The perfect way they sing, dance, and act…and them guiding us. When I see that sorta thing I think…." Suzu's face becomes suddenly determined. "I think there's no way we can lose!" Suzu's burning excitement chills Yonaga's body to the point of shivering. This guy just started here on the same day, at the same time, and should have the same amount of experience yet he seems to live in an entirely different world. Yonaga reflexively steals another glance at his childhood friend. She has a gentle expression as she listens intently to Suzu. He doesn't know what she's thinking but she's definitely in this other world too. He thinks back on the dream he had today. That distant memory where he once stood by her side in the story's lead role. The girl walking by his side now is still living within that dream. "…Sou-chan, what's wrong?" She asks after seeing Yonaga's expression fade and go silent. "Oh, you all right? Practice sure was tough today huh?" Suzu turns his head and looks at Yonaga with concern. "Oh uh, I-I'm okay! I'm just hungry, that's all." "Yeah I feel ya." Their conversation continues meandering along. It's more comfortable like this. As he listens to Suzu talk, Yonaga looks at his friend in a way that's become a habit. "….!" And as he does, their eyes meet. Perhaps she's still feeling concern for Yonaga. He manufactures a smile to try to hide it. Then questions if he's doing it right.

Maybe Aaravos x Young!startouch elf! Reader (platonic obv) where it’s just Aaravos teaching reader and being a father/older brother reader?
/🫒/
A/N: Hello Olive anon! 🩷 Oooh what an interesting idea. Okay so I’ve seen some theories somewhere (can’t remember where or else I’d link them >.<) that Aaravos once ran like a magical school or something and I really like that idea so I’m using that here!
Tumblr media
Prodigy Protégé: Headcanons
✨You are the one to seek out Aaravos and plead for his aid in learning magic
✨You had some important need for it. Perhaps your homeland is dying from a curse. Perhaps a family member is sick
✨Either way, it’s the determination in your eyes that gives Aaravos pause when you ask for his tutelage
✨“My students are the most talented magic users in all in the continent, hand-selected by the high councils and inner magi circles themselves. What makes you believe a mere child is deserving of such education?”
✨You simply set your jaw, determination gleaming in your eyes
✨“I’m not asking you because I deserve it. I’m asking you because I need it.”
✨This made the corner of his lip, slightly, ever so slightly, quirk upwards
✨How intriguing
✨He studies you. At the curious way you clench your fists to your side, the way your chin is held high in defiance. Normally, those seeking his aid spoke to him with such reverence— not that you are being particularly rude, mind. But it was certainly different, the way you approached him.
✨He turns on his heel.
✨“Please—” you start.
✨“You shall serve as a page,” he says without looking back. You tilt your head. “As such, you will be permitted in the magical classrooms during my lecture hours.”
✨You glow with excitement.
✨He seems to sense it—
✨“Not as an official student,” he clarifies. “However, we shall test your raw magical aptitude based on your ability to comprehend and apply such lessons, yourself.”
✨You excitedly hurry after him
✨It was a fair compromise, he thought
✨Something to placate this little one. Giving you the chance to potential learn, but only dependent on your hunger for knowledge
✨Little did he know, you would far exceed his expectations
✨You attend every lecture hall. This is impressive, as his schedule is based on his carefully curated ability to function on little sleep. Yet, despite the bags that eventually form under your eyes, you are always eagerly awaiting the start of classes
✨During lectures he asks you to perform trivial tasks as a page— refilling the ink wells on the desks, distributing spell scrolls to the other students, and other things that normally he would waste lecture time magicking
✨The few minutes you save per lecture add up to several hours per week of time saved, by his calculations
✨And he wouldn’t hesitate to make sure any students snickering in the hallway over the presence of a child in the school would be made aware of your invaluable contribution to their education (“If your magical education is that trivial to you, you should dedicate your time elsewhere”)
✨Sometimes he would scan his students during a discussion to gauge understanding by their expressions, and always would notice your eyes: gleaming with curiosity and passion for the subject material
✨It also impressed him that he would catch sight of you in the library in your free time, surrounded by open magic books
✨Between the many lectures and extra studying, you were able to catch up to —dare he say even exceed— the other students in record time
✨That’s when the questions started
✨“Mr. Aaravos?” You would trail behind him in the hallways between classes, asking theoretical questions about complex magical spells
✨He would answer them thoughtfully
✨But found it interesting your questions always began with the same thing—
✨“Mr. Aaravos!”
✨Normally, he would correct a student for using such a mundane title. There were other honorifics that were typical of his followers to use. But instead of correcting you, he found this…Endearing. A reminder that, in spite of all of your hard work and determination, you were still only a child.
✨So, he allowed it, and would answer every single one of your questions warmly
✨One morning, he is surprised when five minutes before the start of his first class of the day— and there’s no you
✨He furrows his brow at this atypicality
✨A quick magical survey spell of the grounds and: ah, you’re in the library
✨He contemplates if perhaps you became distracted by complex theories of the senior-level spells you insisted on learning, or if maybe you lost track of time reading two books at once with the dual reading spell. A small, fond smile creeps unto his lips as he walks across the building.
✨What he finds in the library is a mountain of books, four of which are open on the table, and you— fast asleep with your head in your arms between all of them
✨He cancels all of his lectures for the day and closes the library
✨He conjures a day bed and a blanket and magicks you into it, tucking you in
✨Then he settles into your spot on the table and begins reading
✨After a few hours, you wake up absolutely mortified. But as you open your mouth to begin apologizing profusely, Aaravos speaks first
✨“The literature you have been studying here,” he hums, tapping one finger lightly against one of the books. “This is advanced magical theory. You are trying to create a spell.”
✨That’s exactly what you’re doing. You need to create a spell to solve your problems back home.
✨You feel the blood rush to your ears. “Yes Mr. Aaravos. I’m sorry I—”
✨He holds his hand up and your mouth hangs open mid-apology.
✨“If you wanted to create a new spell,” he says, now turning toward you, “it seems the only thing you have not accounted for is the incantation.”
✨You close your mouth and swallow. “I… had forgotten that part.”
✨And he chuckles, warmth gleaming in his eyes. “Well, then,” he says, “what say you we develop one together?”
✨You can’t contain your excitement
✨After a few days of work, Aaravos helps you complete your spell. You’re astounded by the results, and even more excited that he assures you it will work at home.
✨But packing your belongings to return home feels bittersweet
✨Aaravos notices the mixed expression on your face the morning you are set to depart
✨“You are always welcome here,” he states. It’s not an invitation— it’s a matter of fact.
✨“Really? I can come back?” The wonderment in your eyes makes him smile.
✨“Indeed. But upon your return, you will no longer be my page… Instead, you will return as my prodigy.”

To be honest, August was really just an exercise in staying afloat. I was able to continue my little habits since I've been doing them so long that they are just something I do in my spare time. But anything else was really hit or miss! I also realized I had forgotten to set goals for August so I guess it worked out since I didn't miss any goals! Sometimes life just happens, so I try not to worry too much about it. Now with September and a new Japanese preschool year beginning (yes they follow the American system at this school), I want to try to focus on making significant improvement again.
Tumblr media
August Progress
I spent most of my time in August on Listening and Speaking, and the least time on Vocabulary and Kanji. Listening was primarily listening to (children's) TV shows, podcasts, and conversations, and the Speaking study time I recorded was primarily conversations (with ママ友s and this time I recorded in-depth conversations with my son and husband because my son can participate in actual conversations when did that happen).
I feel like I did a lot of Reading in August but less Grammar and Writing, because I had so much going on and I was just trying to keep on top of all my responsibilities and also trying to get enough sleep.
In July I didn't do a study habit check-in, but let's see how I did in August:
Study Habit Check-In:
〇 = Great, △ = Decent, ✖ = Not Great
Read daily - read something almost every day 〇
Write sentences 4 times a week - definitely not, but that's ok, I was busy! ✖
Review kanji and vocabulary flash cards daily - nope, no, not at all ^^; ✖
Review 1-2 N3 grammar points weekly - I did review grammar points but it wasn't as often as once a week △
Learn 1-2 N2 grammar points weekly - I reviewed a couple of N2 grammar points but did not learn any new ones △
Listen to 1 podcast a week - yes! 〇
Continue to work on hiragana with my son - not sure where we are at this point, we are reading books and I am trying to pinpoint which characters he knows and which ones he doesn't know; characters like ちゃ and じ (I learned today these are called 拗音・ようおん) are understandably difficult for him; since we practice every day I call this a win 〇
Tumblr media
September Goals
I'm super motivated for September, let's gooo!
I want to get back into my study materials such as:
新にほんご500問 (Kanji, Vocabulary, Grammar drills)
日本語総まとめN2 (Kanji, Vocabulary, Grammar, Listening, Reading workbook)
外国人のための日本語敬語の使い方 (85 Basic Expressions of Japanese honorifics for Quick and Easy use, aka Keigo)
日本の歴史366 (daily history lesson)
I also got really excited and checked out way too many textbooks on the Japan Foundation (Libby) so I'd like to go through those as well.
And finally, I'd like to take a tip from some of the ママ友s (those are mom friends) and start taking time on weekends to work on hiragana recognition with my son (very mindful). Making it fun helps keep his interest, and we are fortunate to have collected a lot of Japanese children's books in a range of levels to practice with.
How is your studying going? Any new study tips or new classes? Feel free to comment or DM me! Happy studying!

If Yinqing (OC) takes calligraphy lessons from Zhongli, and Childe genuinely joins as a new student who’s recently (?) arrived in Liyue…
Characters: Yinqing, Zhongli, Childe, some Traveller and Paimon
Note: Chinese wordplay and cultural misunderstanding, brief mentions of blood, unintentional misgendering, passive aggression
Yinqing, she/her, masculine and gender-neutral descriptions. Recently I tried to write some short scenes in Chinese. Please excuse the possible Chinese grammar mistakes and OOC moments. English translation and notes at the end.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Yinqing: My calligraphy shifu is of course, Wangsheng Funeral Parlour’s—!
Traveller: Director Hu?
Yinqing: …It’s Zhongli-xiansheng.
Paimon: …Huh?
——
Zhongli: Lately there’s a disciple from Northland Bank.
Yinqing: (A Snezhnayan student…)
Childe: I’ll be in your care.
Yinqing: (…Hm? He smells of blood; no doubt a killer with more than he lets on.)
Yinqing: Your humble servant, Yinqing. Pray tell, this shige’s name?
Childe: Shige? How familiar! It’s like having a younger sister. Just call me Childe.
Yinqing: ……
Yinqing: Heh, so that’s how it is. This young master “Young Master” here has quite the big ego, I see.
Childe: Is that so? I don’t mind a bit of exercise. Go ahead and try, then.
Yinqing: Oh my, aren’t you here for calligraphy? Why the sudden bloodlust?
Zhongli: Childe, shige in this context refers to a relationship between disciples, rather than a familial one. A simple self-introduction will suffice.
Childe: Haha, where are my manners. Call me Tartaglia then. I look forward to future classes, Yinqing-shimei.
Yinqing: Tartaglia-shige, you seem to possess extraordinary skills, so I’ll just mention this as an aside: I’m not some girl. Please just refer to me as shidi.
Childe: Fine by me, Yinqing-shidi.
Zhongli: Rather than bickering, why don’t the two of you compare your skills on paper with calligraphy?
Yinqing: Of course.
Childe: It’s about time!

Translation Notes
1. shifu = master/teacher. xiansheng = Mr.
2. “在下名为阴睛。请问师哥贵姓?” / “Your humble servant, Yinqing. Pray tell, this shige’s name?” Me trying to sound formal/wuxia in Chinese, (not sure how well it works in any language). Also, Yinqing’s making herself sound humble with the pronoun 在下 (zaixia) but the word servant isn’t actually used.
3. “口气不小嘛” kind of translates to… a passive aggressive “quite a strong tone, huh” so I’ve tried to convey this with “quite a big ego, I see.”
4. 师哥 (Shige) = older male disciple. 哥 also means older brother. Childe misunderstood and thought Yinqing meant the latter.
5. 师妹 (Shimei) = younger female disciple, but likewise 妹 also means younger sister. Childe assumes Yinqing’s gendered title preference.
6. 师弟 (Shidi) = younger male disciple.
7. 公子 (Gonzi) in a wuxia context— I’ll quote from this post by farmerlan, on wuxia honorifics in MDZS.
https://www.tumblr.com/farmerlan/619887384453120000/a-guide-to-commonly-used-honorifics-in-%E9%AD%94%E9%81%93%E7%A5%96%E5%B8%88the
You will see this translated in a variety of different ways - master, young master, sir...and they are all correct! Congratulations, you’ve hit the jackpot - depending on the situation, gongzi can be a whole hodgepodge of things.
General honorific: Gongzi can also be used between strangers/acquaintances as a respectful term. Gongzi is, in some ways, an indicator of respect of the other person’s status. So oftentimes you’ll find two young masters from different sects referring to each other as gongzi politely, but you wouldn’t find two beggars on the street calling each other that. and it’s usually used to address someone younger or a similar age as you. If you‘re talking to someone who is clearly your senior, use 前辈 or 先生.
Childe’s title uses the same term so, just like his in-game introduction to the Traveler in Chinese, here it also sounds like—
Childe: Just call me Young Master.
Yinqing: This young master “Young Master” here
8. “呀,你不是来学书法的吗?” / “Oh my, aren’t you here for calligraphy?” That first exclamation is more like a surprised “oh” but since Yinqing is being passive aggressive, “oh my” works better for the tone I think.
9. Literally speaking “算我失礼了” is closer to “pardon my bad manners” but I’m sure “Where are my manners” works better.
10. “我就随口提一下” is closer to “I’ll just casually mention [this]” but I think it flows better to say “I’ll just mention this as an aside.”
11. “要上了!” / “It’s about time!” = the same thing Childe says in Chinese when switching to Melee Stance for Skill. Kind of got the vibe of “It’s about time we start this (activity)!”
If this goes on, that’ll be another kind of weekly spar. Wonder how their handwriting would look…
Thank you for reading! ^^

woah I haven't thought of it until I saw an artist ask about it. but yeah, how do they plan to localize honorifics in korean for jack jeanne? because kisa uses さん for fumi and kai (so, fumi-san and kai-san). huh, now that I think about it, neji and shirota are referred to as senpai whereas fumi and kai didn't want kisa to be too formal with them.
but then like... what. kisa will call them 형? fumi-hyung, kai-hyung? (as opposed to probably 선배 for shirota and neji). ooh I kinda love the idea. there's an added layer of genderisms here, because you only say 형 (hyung) if you're male. otherwise you'd call them 오빠 (oppa).
now I'm curious.. I'd love to see the kr localization make kisa call them fumi-hyung and kai-hyung :o
(I guess the equivalent for さん should really be 님 if I am understanding my lessons right, but that's kinda formal and takes away the closeness of using someone's first name. maybe kisa can get away with 씨 since they're in the same class, but that's weird if she calls the others her 선배님, I think
otoh 3Q calling her 키사야...)

This update brings me life!! After all these years, our idiot Shinyas are finally making some progress. So proud of them.
The visuals were gorgeous, as always (not to mention the men). The summary was quite short compared to the number of pages simply because there were multiple spreads and detailed backgrounds that weren't dense on dialogue...I mean, the first five pages were shared on Twitter and could basically be summed up as "Suzuki runs to the studio" lol. It can be agonizing to wait for the updates, but when they come out you can definitely see the care that goes into drawing them.
I love the subtle comedy of the couple of panels of the old women. Suzuki is so sexy the old man passes out! He just like me fr fr. Those ladies previously said that their Shinya was much sexier (and xrayed the hell out of his ass, which, also, same), but I think they all enjoyed the little view they caught.
Suzuki very boldly interrupts a class because he just has to talk to Sugiki right away. I wonder if the students were thinking, "bro, this could've been a text" lol. I love the visual of the other characters blurring into the background, showing how intensely focused these two are on each other. And the moment with Fusako was nice, I didn't know she shared her partner's ability of psychic communication with Suzuki haha. But she has been channeling his spirit for her Latin practice, maybe that gives her a stronger sense of connection with him.
It's definitely interesting to see the two Shinyas meeting in front of onlookers, including Sugiki’s mother. This is the second time she's seen him come to the school, I wonder if she suspects anything? Of course, depending on what happens in the next update, she could outright see something happening if she hasn't left yet. Funny that she caught him coming around the day they broke up, and now is also around for their reunion.
I took the moment where he said "Sugiki...Shinya" as wanting to specify that he wasn't talking to Mrs. Sugiki. But I also am curious if the way they refer to each other will change with an actual relationship. They both grew up in countries where calling people by first names is the norm, so it's not like it's too jarring for either of them to be addressed as just "Shinya". I do wonder if having the same name will result in one (or both?) using a nickname instead. I just want to find out what their solution is! At the very least, Sugiki should drop the "-sensei" honorific he always attaches to Suzuki's name once they're proper boyfriends.
Though Sugiki keeps looking aloof in this chapter as he continues his lessons, his hands still sparkle as he feels Suzuki nearby, and his mind is swirling with anxiety over why Suzuki came to see him, including flashbacks to their breakup. She even redrew a couple of the panels, so instead of how chapter 28 originally ended with their lips just about to touch and Suzuki's tears just about to fall, in this chapter we see their lips connected and tears streaming down his face. So sad and pretty. And Sugiki worries about being rejected again, like how can that happen when you're not even together? You think Suzuki came to double dump you lol. Or maybe he was thinking about their heartfelt kiss and embrace backstage, and that Suzuki might be coming to say they shouldn't have done that. Well, lucky for him (and us), that's not why he's there at all!
I like how Sugiki comes to the door in his slightly dressed down state, taking off his tie and vest, unbuttoning those top buttons of his shirt, like he's getting ready for a practice session with Suzuki. He's displaying annoyance at having to wait and wonder all this time about why Suzuki is there, he's so cute when he's snippy. And then Suzuki makes his epic declaration, a simple request of "please be mine" that's still so impactful. Then he follows it up with some desperation, saying he'll do anything Sugiki wants, including going along with the delusion of being a god and becoming one with him. We're left on this cliffhanger before Sugiki gives a response, though he has a bit of a raised eyebrow at that last part. I imagine he'll say something along the lines of he doesn't want Suzuki to do that, and only wants to know and love his true self. Whatever happens next, I'm salivating at the thought of the next update, and I hope that since it's a second part rather than an entirely new chapter that it'll come in a shorter time frame (usually 4-6 weeks based on past updates). Inoue has said that this volume would see them going down the road to happiness, and we're finally so close to that goal!
10 Dance - chapter 42, part 1 summary
Suzuki rushes to Sugiki's studio so the two can talk about their relationship. What will he say once they finally reunite?
Full summary and highlight images under the cut
Chapter 42, part 1: 好きにならずにはいられない (Can't Help Falling in Love)
Published online on July 12th, 2024, available to purchase on Comic Days, or rent for ten days on Yanmaga.
Tumblr media
Suzuki runs through the streets of Ginza on his way to Sugiki's studio. He thinks about how he needs to see him right away so they can discuss their future together. He enters the building and notices that the first floor is a shop selling dance goods, which he'd never seen before since he's only been there late at night. He passes by the group of elderly students who were seen ogling his sexy magazine ad in an earlier chapter. The women blush and sweat, as the husband of one of them faints. Suzuki heads to the classroom, where Sugiki and his mother are giving instruction. Sugiki looks stunned as he catches sight of him, and the two focus intensely on each other, visualized by the other characters blurring into the background.
Tumblr media
Fusako sees Suzuki and happily runs up to him, grabbing his hand and thinking that she's missed him. He appears to hear her unspoken communication and thinks back, "Me, too," before giving her a playful tap and turning his attention back to Sugiki. He states that he needs to talk to him, to which Sugiki replies that he's giving a lesson right now, and is pretty booked up for the rest of the day. Unfazed, Suzuki says he'll wait until he's finished. Sugiki sighs and says that someone canceled their lesson later on, so he'll come see him during that time. Suzuki says that he'll be outside and leaves the buidling, staring up at Sugiki's classroom as he waits.
Tumblr media
As he continues giving lessons, Sugiki is distracted by thoughts about what might be happening. He wonders what Suzuki could have come here to say to him after he previously told him things were over between them and they promised to not see each other anymore. He thinks of the day they called things off, when Suzuki stated that Sugiki's obsession with him was not love, and Sugiki realized he was not the god he had imagined him to be. Even so, his yearning still remains, and he doesn't think he could handle being rejected by Suzuki again. He wonders if he himself might have changed a bit, and if he's capable of seeing Suzuki for his true self now.
Sugiki finally gets a chance to leave the classroom. He cracks open the main door and accuses Suzuki of being selfish, complaining that he's had to stop himself from coming to see him this whole time. Slightly intimidated by his attitude, Suzuki asks him to come outside. Once they're together on the sidewalk, Suzuki bows his head and says, "Please be mine." He pleads and says that he'll do anything, even be the god Sugiki saw in him, and merge into one single being with him as he wished.

JRPH 101 - Lesson two: Honorifics, part 2
For today's lesson we will be covering:
more common honorifics: -sama, -dono, -sensei, -shi
familial honorifics: -nii/-nee, -oji/-oba, -tousan/-kaasan, -jii/-baa
cute honorifics: -chan/-tan, -chama/-tama
archaic honorifics: -ue, no kimi
how/when honorifics can/should change
It would be impossible to make a comprehensive list of every honorific, in part because it's not uncommon for friends to invent new ones as wordplay and in-jokes for use with each other. There are specific honorifics for corporate titles, honorifics for use in court documents and reporting, martial arts honorifics, and honorifics specific to a variety of professions. While it may be passingly useful to know that company president Hayashi should be addressed as Hayashi-shacho or as shacho-san, for our purposes, we'll be focusing on those honorifics most likely to be seen floating around JRP*.
General Honorifics
-sama This honorific is a high mark of respect, used when other honorifics aren't respectful enough or as a way of teasing between close friends.
-tono/-dono More common in writing than in speaking, this honorific can be used to indicate respect between high ranked individuals. It is generally agreed that -dono is a lower respect level than -sama, although not universally.
-sensei An honorific of respect for certain authority figures, such as doctors, teachers, and lawyers, as well as highly skilled artisans and martial artists. Like -senpai, -sensei can also be used as a noun and paired with other honorifics.
-shi In theory, this honorific is more commonly used in writing than in conversation as a way of showing a standard of respect in referring to a person the speaker/writer hasn't actually met. Preferred over -san for formal writing where other, higher level honorifics are not appropriate.
Familial Honorifics
-nii/-nee Indicates older brother/sister respectively. Can be combined with other honorifics to show more or less formality/intimacy with the other person. Oniisan/Oneesan are commonly used for strangers who are young adults, especially for younger speakers.
-oji/oba Uncle/aunt. Like -nii/nee, -oji/-oba can be combined with other honorifics for more or less formality. Ojisan/Obasan are commonly used for strangers who are middle-aged adults.
-tousan/-kaasan Father/Mother. The roots are actually -tou and -kaa, but they are always paired with -san, -sama, or a derivation of those as a sign of respect.
-jii/-baa Grandfather/Grandmother, often paired with -chan or similar diminutive to show affection. Ojiisan/Obaasan are commonly used for elderly strangers.
Cute Honorifics
-chan Diminutive of -san, -chan started as babyspeak but is now an accepted “proper” honorific for young women. Use of this honorific can also take the place of a term of endearment, since it indicates affection, cuteness, and endearment.
-tan Diminutive of -chan, this honorific is even more cuteness and affectionate. Often used for anthropomorphisms, such as the OS-tans.
-chama Diminutive of -sama, affectionate and cutesy, but could be interpreted as demeaning and offensive in the wrong context.
-tama Diminutive of -chama, even more affectionate and cutesy, but also capable of being seen as offensive in the wrong context.
Archaic Honorifics
You might never run into these honorifics at all, but they're worth noting, because you never know, you just might.
-ue Though rarely used as an honorific, it still sometimes appears in conjugations such as hahaue (honored mother).
no kimi Historically used to indicate a member of the Court (eg Hikaru no kimi), if it is seen now, outside of historical dramas, it is most likely in love letters a man might write to a woman
Changes in Honorifics
Ok, now for the other Big Question we've been asked: how does one know which honorific to use and can they ever change? As we noted last time, in a real world situation, -san is always the safe choice. In our admittedly biased opinion, this is still the safe choice when opening a dialogue with someone you don't otherwise know from Steve. It is, after all, a very Japanese thing to opt for more polite over less~
(So why not go to -sama, you ask? Because that can be too easily read as potentially mocking, especially in the semi-casual context of internet conversations. Unless your muse is working in a service industry and Muse B is a customer, better to stick with -san. And definitely don't use any of the cutesy honorifics until given permission, unless you're trying to pick a fight.)
In the context of JRP, many of the people your muse(s) will meet will be musicians. If your muse is a fresh young face in the music scene, those others are going to be largely senpai to one degree or another. In Japanese, the convention is to use (stage name)-senpai or just senpai with your seniors until one is given explicit permission to use something else. As one progresses in the business and gains kouhai of one's own, the convention is to call them (stage name)-san or (stage name)-kun for inside one's own company, while one's peers continue to be (stage name)-san. Moreover, one's senpai continue to be one's senpai, even after ten, fifteen, twenty years in the same company. Changes in a senpai-kouhai relationship will always come from the senpai side, but even after a senpai grants a kouhai permission to change honorifics, senpai remains respected as senpai. The linguistic convention is to continue with these rules until the senior partner in a pairing gives permission for a change. So for example, in a context where Kazuki is junior to Shinya, Kazuki would continue to call him Shinya-senpai until Shinya gave him explicit permission to call him something (specific) else.
School classmates address each other mostly as (name)-kun. As childhood friends move into other contexts, the use of -kun will continue with some drifting into the cutesy honorifics as shows of intimacy. So for example, given Mitsuki and Takemasa have been friends since high school, it wouldn't be strange for Mitsuki to call Takemasa “Take-chan,” especially in a teasing context.
Because not everyone comes to the music industry at the same age, one may encounter a situation where a musician who is older than another is technically kouhai to the younger one because the younger musician has been with the company and business longer. Politeness would dictate that the younger therefore be addressed as -senpai, however social mores would pressure the younger to offer the use of -san or -kun to the elder in short order. As an example, when Gazette signed with PSC, Miyavi, who had been with the company for awhile already, was their senpai in the company, even though he is younger than Aoi.
In a dating context, a man may use -chan on his girlfriend while she is still using -san on him. Indeed, a woman married to her husband for ten years could still be calling him (name)-san, if not Tousan (to reflect that he is the father of her children). As a general trend, women speak in a more polite form than men, although this trend is slowly changing.
Reflecting Changes in Honorifics in Your RP
As we noted in the previous lesson, there is no one right way agreed by all players on how to handle honorifics in JRP. What feels natural and appropriate to you may not to someone else. Linguistically, an honorific-less name would be far too intimate for use in anything but a private setting. However, in RP contexts, dropped honorifics could mean anything from a -kun level friendship to long-term lovers and the specific meaning will change depending on the mun doing or asking for the dropping. Therefore, our best advice is to find what works best for you and keep communication channels open so your partners know which conventions you're using.
And with that, we do believe we have covered the basics on honorifics! If we've missed something or not fully answered your question, please do let us know!
* this focus is why, even with the number of Kansai-ben-speaking muses, we opted to drop dialectal honorifics, though if you do know of any Kansai muses using -han extensively, that's Kansai-ben for -san.

Ruggie Info Compilation part 1: Animal Linguistics and Honorifics
Tumblr media
Ruggie is a self-described “expert” in animal linguistics. Thanks to the various part-time jobs he has worked he also says that he “can say hello and goodbye and haggle prices in like ten different languages”, so he may be proficient in languages just in general.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruggie says that he excels in his animal linguistics courses because it “is a practical skill for the workforce, but knowledge of the past ain’t all that useful”, which is why he performs comparatively poorly in history of magic lessons.
Trein teaches both courses and, when he insists that Ruggie improve his performance in history of magic, Ruggie does so by utilizing his animal linguistics skills: he bribes Lucius into avoiding Trein long enough to make Trein worry, then returns Lucius to Trein himself, pretending to have found him.
Ruggie claims that he was studying history of magic in the library when he went to Lucius’ aid, and Trein rewards him with information about the upcoming history of magic exam.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the same vignette Trein again goes to Ruggie for help, asking Ruggie to retrieve escaped rats that are needed for his animal linguistics classes.
Ruggie is reluctant to assist without compensation for his efforts, and Trein offers to nominate him for a prestigious Animal Linguistics Speech Contest. Ruggie agrees, saying, “Just having competed in that could totally help me get a good job after I graduate”.
Ruggie struggles to retrieve the rats, at first, and resigns himself to having to chase each rat down individually.
Leona recommends that he tries viewing the situation “from a pack leader’s perspective” instead of trying to do everything alone, giving Ruggie the idea to once again employ Lucius (and all of Lucius’ ‘kitty friends’) into rounding up the rats on his behalf in exchange for tuna.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruggie refers to third-year students such as Leona, Lilia and Malleus with the “-san” honorific, while he uses “-kun” with younger students and those in his own year. Much like Cater, symbols like “~” and “♪” get removed from his dialogue on NA, as does the word “cute”.
There is a cute addition to NA-Ruggie in Book 2 where he quotes the hyaena Banzai’s “Toodles” line. His original lines are a very slang word for “You got it” and the English word “bye-bye ♪”.
(It is interesting when quotes from the movie are added to NA where they do not exist in JP, as the quotes from the movie that do exist in JP have all been removed from NA (“light of another day” / “be prepared” etc.)

"Alright, everyone," Veth says with authority, and everyone else quiets down. "Tomorrow is the big day."
Caleb sighs and ducks behind his drink. There is a speech coming. This is exactly the sort of ceremony he had hoped to avoid by having this get-together at his home rather than the bar Veth had suggested. It's only five of them, tonight; Beauregard and Yasha are always in town, and Veth had insisted on coming. And Essek, of course. He's not sure when the elf's presence at his side became an of course, but in a careful way, he likes it.
“As the person in this world who cares the most about Caleb--”
Essek silently quirks an eyebrow at that, and it doesn’t get past Veth.
“Alright, come on, just because you got him into bed and I didn’t doesn’t mean--”
Caleb clears his throat loudly, and Veth’s smile snaps back into place.
“As Caleb’s oldest, dearest, truest friend,” she says, and Essek manages to look dignified even while rolling his eyes, “it is my humble duty to tell you all how amazing he is on this momentous occasion.”
“You know, I am starting a new job, not getting married,” Caleb murmurs in her direction.
“And we’re all very proud of you!” Veth replies.
Caleb takes a long drink as the others chime in with agreement. Yasha shoots him a sympathetic look, and he returns a tight smile.
“Come on, man,” Beau says from where she leans against the table, “aren’t you excited, at all?”
He takes a long breath. Excited is a word for it. Ready to vomit at a moment’s notice is perhaps more accurate. The Soltryce Academy is tricky. He’s been back there a few times in recent weeks, for interviews and preparation, and each time, it’s felt like walking through a dream of a place the mind could not quite capture properly.
For whatever purpose, Trent has always wanted Caleb - Bren - to follow in his footsteps. Those footsteps feel a touch too literal in those hallways.
“Caleb?” Beau’s voice brings him out of his thoughts. “You still with us?”
He shakes his head. "Ja. Entschuldigung. There is a lot to think about."
Veth lowers her glass, frowning. "Nobody threatened you, did they? Because I'll have words with them."
"No, nothing like that." Not lately, anyway. He sets his own drink down on the table. "Just a bit worried, perhaps."
"Worried about what?" Beau asks flatly.
Caleb lets out a long breath, looking down at the floor. Where to begin? He’s worried that everything will go wrong. Worried that he’ll turn up with his clothes on backwards, or spill coffee down the front of his shirt, or trip over his words before the lesson even starts. Worried, most of all, about what comes after.
“I hope that I will not…” He searches for the right words. “I hope that I will be able to serve my students well enough,” he settles on. “The examples I have had were, ah….” Trent Ikithon is not one he wishes to emulate.
Essek frowns. “Carve your own path,” he says. “Someone as brilliant as you are needs no one to emulate.”
“Ja, well, that is fine for throwing together a spell or two, but I imagine the students will need a little more structure.” These are young minds. Any mistakes he makes will stick with them. He, of all people, knows just how much.
“Maybe you could ask them what they want from you,” Yasha pipes up. “You know, make sure you’re doing alright.”
Caleb lets out a long sigh. “Ja, maybe. That is a good idea.” Of course, it also requires that the students in question trust him enough to give him a straight answer.
They sit in relative silence for a moment, working away at their drinks. He hopes Veth doesn’t resent him for stepping on the atmosphere.
“Seriously, man, you’re gonna be great.” Beau knocks back the rest of her drink. “You’re already the best professor I’ve ever known.”
“I do not think the owl counts as a point of comparison,” Caleb deadpans. “Regardless, I will settle for not making a fool of myself for a first impression. That will be difficult enough.”
Beau shrugs, and reaches over to refill her glass. There’s a devious look in her eye that makes him nervous. "So why don't you practice?" she asks.
Caleb looks at her warily. "Practice?"
"Yeah, man." She gestures at the others. "Here's your class. Teach us something."
Before he can object, she’s already begun to pull an armchair toward the coffee table in the center of the room. Soon enough, three more seats have joined it, all on the same side. She throws her arms wide with a challenging grin.
“First day,” she says. “Don’t be late.” With that, she flops down onto the rightmost chair.
Transfixed in bemusement, Caleb watches as Yasha and Veth rush to occupy the next two seats in the makeshift classroom. The Expositor commands a room, it seems.
“Are you comfortable with this?” Essek murmurs as he brushes past as well. “I am willing to be the, ah... wet blanket, if need be.”
Caleb sighs, briefly twining their fingers together and squeezing once before letting him go. “Not comfortable, no, but it’s not a bad idea.”
Someone wolf whistles from the peanut gallery, and Caleb turns a fond glare on them all. All three of them are, of course, the picture of innocence. He shakes his head as Essek settles down primly in the last remaining chair. It’s not exactly the picture of an academic setting, with their glasses of half-finished booze still on the table in front of them and the lot of them draped over armchairs and ottomans.
“Alright,” says Beau, who has not even bothered to put her drink down. She makes a trilling sound that he thinks is probably meant to emulate a school bell. “Hit us.”
"We will be brutally honest," Veth promises. "Which means we will tell you honestly how perfect you are."
"Or if there's anything you could do better," Yasha adds.
Caleb stares back at them. It’s nothing he hasn’t gone over in his own head a hundred times. Even once or twice, to a captive audience of cats. It’s a short class. It will be over before he knows it.
The others look up at him expectantly. Watching him. Waiting. Caleb clears his throat.
"I, ah... feel a bit silly,” he admits.
Without a word, Essek waves a hand, and the familiar faces before him shift to those of strangers.
It’s almost embarrassing how much it helps. Caleb takes a deep breath and lets it out, running through the lesson plan in his head.
"Guten Morgen, class, I am, ah… Professor Widogast." It's the first time he's said that particular pair of words out loud.
"Whoo!" the student who is not Veth shouts.
"Yeah!" the student who is not Beau chimes in.
Caleb gives them a look and straightens his coat. "This is Introductory Transmutation, in room 142, so if you are all in the correct place--"
"Professor?" The student who is not Yasha raises her hand.
"Ah, ja, Miss…"
"Lionett."
Not-Beau slaps a hand over her own mouth and mutters, “Holy shit,” into it.
“Was that too much?” not-Yasha whispers.
“Babe, it was so hot,” not-Beau hisses back.
Caleb clears his throat. "Miss Lionett, do you have a question?"
Not-Yasha seems to suddenly remember her role, and she folds her hands in her lap. "No," she says, "I have to use the bathroom."
Caleb pinches the bridge of his nose as not-Beau bites back a giggle. “Ja, okay, go.”
“Don’t let her go!” not-Veth interjects. “She knew it was almost time for class; she should have gone earlier.”
“Dude, if she has to pee then she has to pee,” not-Beau protests.
Pointedly, not-Essek raises his hand.
Caleb lets himself sigh with relief. “Ja, Master…?”
“Gross, Professor, we don’t need to know about your weird sex dynamics,” not-Beau says.
Not-Essek’s face blooms red, and Caleb presses a hand to his face to hide the same. “You know very well, Beauregard, that it is an honorific.”
Not-Beau shrugs, looking very pleased with herself as she takes another sip of her drink. Not-Essek glares very polite daggers at her before clearing his throat.
“Thelyss,” he answers.
Beau cups both hands around her mouth and boos.
“No, it’s better that he’s honest,” Veth says. “We already know he’s a terrible actor.”
“Herr Thelyss,” Caleb says, raising his voice above the heckling. “Do you have a question?”
Essek leans forward, resting his elbows on the table in a gesture that’s much too endearing. “I wondered what you will be teaching us today, Professor Widogast.”
Caleb tries not to dwell on the way the title hits differently on Essek’s voice, instead straightening up and waving one hand behind him. An illusory chalkboard appears in the air behind him to polite applause from Veth and Yasha. Back on track.
“Well, this is your first day,” he says. “So I know that - Beauregard, please remove your feet from the table - I know that most of your other teachers will be spending time going over the material that you will be covering this semester, but, ah…” What is he meant to be doing with his hands? They feel limp if they’re at his sides, but too formal behind his back and too awkward in front of him. Perhaps he should have a lectern? Somewhere to rest them, or shuffle with papers?
His gaze drifts back to his “students,” who all blink back at him expectantly. Essek inclines his head as though to prompt him on. He clasps his hands in front of his chest, hoping it will do for now.
“Right,” he continues. “Ja, so I thought we would take a look at something more practical to start. We will leave the reading for tomorrow; you have enough of that today.”
He waves his hands again, and behind him, a set of runes and diagrams appears on the chalkboard. Above it is written the word Prestidigitation.
“So, ah, partner up,” he orders. “Introduce yourselves. If there is someone on their own, a group of three is perfectly acceptable.”
“I call Miss Lionett,” Beau shouts, grabbing Yasha’s hand.
“Can I go to the bathroom, first?” Yasha asks.
Caleb gives her an incredulous look.
“I really do need to go,” she says.
He gestures towards the hallway, and she shuffles off. In the meantime, Veth and Essek scoot their chairs closer together. Caleb’s gaze lingers questioningly on Beau, who shakes her head.
“She’s not learning anything tonight, man. Go ahead.”
“Ja, okay,” he says distantly.
It feels silly, explaining the spell to this motley crew. Beau has leaned back in her chair, arms crossed, eyes glassy, clearly not paying an ounce of attention. Essek has produced a piece of paper upon which Veth occasionally scribbles, though the way he periodically nods approval at Caleb’s points betrays his own prior knowledge of the subject. After a few minutes, Yasha returns and attempts to take down notes of her own.
“Is everyone following along?” he asks after a while, knowing it’s a futile question.
“Yep,” Beau lies.
“Hmm.” Yasha hums.
“Perfectly,” Essek says.
“You’re doing amazing, sweetie,” Veth confirms with a wink.
He continues, running them through the various applications one by one. Beau gives him an occasional “uh huh” that he believes not one bit. At one point, he catches Essek take a passing glance at Veth’s paper, widen his eyes, and lean forward to murmur something to her. He isn’t sure he wants to know what that’s about.
“Let’s keep focused, please, everyone,” he reminds them.
Essek waves a hand to signal him to continue. Nothing too scandalous, then. He goes through the final few points, then comes to stop in front of the chalkboard, hands awkwardly clasped again.
“Okay, that is it,” he says. “You have as much time as you require to finish the spell, and when you are finished, I would like one person from each group to demonstrate.”
He gives the others a questioning look. It’s one of the points he’s most worried about. A way to take pressure off some of the slower students could just as easily be a way to unintentionally foster competition and resentment. But none of them objects, so he gives them another nod.
“I suppose we should skip the demonstration portion,” he mumbles.
“I can do it,” Yasha chirps. Without warning, she swings the massive greatsword from her back and sinks the tip into the table, making the others jump. “I made a small mark.”
Caleb covers his eyes with one hand. “Ja, will it go away in one hour?”
Yasha silently places her drink down over the indentation. Caleb sighs. It isn’t as though he has very many guests, anyway.
“I can probably swing producing an odor, for you,” Beau offers. “But I figure you probably don’t want that.”
He ignores her, and instead gives Essek a tight smile.
“Well, would my second group care to demonstrate?”
Beau jerks a thumb in Essek’s direction and fake-coughs to Yasha, “Teacher’s pet.”
Essek ignores her and sits back, fingers working in those little patterns he draws when something has piqued his curiosity. “I believe so,” he says, and nods to Veth.
Caleb raises his eyebrows as all eyes turn to Veth. Though Essek had the courtesy to leave her a halfling, her features and coloring are entirely different - but that wide smile as she stands and rubs both hands together would give her away, no matter the face it was set in. And as Beau swears under her breath, Yasha and Caleb look on wide-eyed, and Essek watches with a smirk, she pulls her hands apart to let loose a shower of sparks.
“You… learned the spell,” Caleb says numbly. He hadn’t imagined any of them were actually paying attention.
“It was an excellent lesson!” Veth replies.
As she takes her seat again, Beau and Yasha give her a smattering of stunned applause. Essek clears his throat pointedly.
“And I guess, maybe, Essek gave me one pointer,” Veth amends with an eye-roll.
“Hey, so your partner system worked,” Yasha points out.
It had. The lesson had worked, the procedure had worked - his teaching had worked. There’s still a little voice in his head reminding him that Veth is brilliant, and an adult, and perfectly capable of learning things like this without even so much as his help - but he can’t deny that it’s his guidance that taught her this particular spell. ‘An excellent lesson,’ Veth had said. In this moment, he’s inclined to believe it might be half true. Caleb realizes very suddenly that he’s beaming.
With a snap of his fingers, Essek dispels the disguises. The soft smile on his face - his real face, and Caleb always misses it dearly when it’s hidden - says he hasn’t failed to notice Caleb’s relief.
“Danke, all of you,” he says sheepishly, waving a hand to vanish the chalkboard.
“Thank you!” Veth says. “For the shiny new spell and for the masterclass in professoring.”
“You were really good,” Yasha agrees. “I’m, uh... I’m sorry about the table.”
He dips his head to hide the way his face is flushing. They exaggerate, the lot of them. But there is something to be said for having friends who will say such things. “Ja, well,” he says, “I am not convinced it will translate to an actual class, but I will hope.”
Beau takes another swig of her drink, wiping her mouth afterwards. “Dude, we were the worst and you still managed to teach somebody something,” she says. “Those kids have nothing on us. You got this.”
He offers her a smile, retrieving his glass from the table as Yasha, Veth, and Essek do the same. He hopes it’s true. He hopes that, separate entirely from his ability to teach them the how of magic, he will be able to keep them safe. That he will be able to keep from passing on any damage he received in his own time in those halls.
He catches Essek’s eye, and the knowing look there puts some of the anxious buzzing to rest. He will be better. He will struggle, most likely. He will stumble, inevitably. But he will give better than he got. He’s been practicing that part for years.
“To Professor Widogast!” Veth shouts, breaking him out of his thoughts.
“Professor Widogast,” the others echo, and Caleb smiles.
“To my very good friends,” he replies.
“To the hottest professor the Soltryce Academy has ever seen,” Veth shouts in response, and Caleb nearly chokes on his drink when Essek casually clinks his glass against hers with a nod.
They drink together. Caleb thinks, just a little bit, he might be excited.

thanks @peregrintook for reading this over and telling me it wasn't the worst thing i had ever written (in much more generous words than that), and @saturdaysky for catching me red-handed last time i deleted it and being so kind about it 💜

“The ceremonial differentiation of the dietary is best seen in the use of intoxicating beverages and narcotics. If these articles of consumption are costly, they are felt to be noble and honorific. Therefore the base classes, primarily the women, practice an enforced continence with respect to these stimulants, except in countries where they are obtainable at a very low cost. From archaic times down through all the length of the patriarchal regime it has been the office of the women to prepare and administer these luxuries, and it has been the perquisite of the men of gentle birth and breeding to consume them. Drunkenness and the other pathological consequences of the free use of stimulants therefore tend in their turn to become honorific, as being a mark, at the second remove, of the superior status of those who are able to afford the indulgence. Infirmities induced by over-indulgence are among some peoples freely recognised as manly attributes. It has even happened that the name for certain diseased conditions of the body arising from such an origin has passed into everyday speech as a synonym for "noble" or "gentle". It is only at a relatively early stage of culture that the symptoms of expensive vice are conventionally accepted as marks of a superior status, and so tend to become virtues and command the deference of the community; but the reputability that attaches to certain expensive vices long retains so much of its force as to appreciably lesson the disapprobation visited upon the men of the wealthy or noble class for any excessive indulgence. The same invidious distinction adds force to the current disapproval of any indulgence of this kind on the part of women, minors, and inferiors. This invidious traditional distinction has not lost its force even among the more advanced peoples of today. Where the example set by the leisure class retains its imperative force in the regulation of the conventionalities, it is observable that the women still in great measure practise the same traditional continence with regard to stimulants.” ― Thorstein Veblen, The Theory of the Leisure Class
