Specifically queer venues:

Planet: never been except after pride one time like 6 years ago, so unable to really review personally, but my pals have given me middling to low reviews of the vibes tbh. The queer rugby team often host events there though

CC Blooms: a club, usually fun tunes but can have a slightly "cishets on stags/hens" crowd occasionally. Would recommend going for their drag shows though, they're always super fun

The Street: good food good drink, also host regular drag shows and club nights and I've loved all the ones I've been to

The Regent: a regular ass pub that is just pretty much exclusively for queer people who want to do a crossword and start weird arguments about board games

Other drag shows/queer events spaces:

Kandy Store at Frankensteins: all seated but Is downstairs so ymmv access wise, usually not super busy which is a tragedy because it fucking rules. They also host a yearly competition for new and upcoming drag artists which is always so special

Queer as Punk at Wee Red Bar or Leith Depot: cool as fuck group that puts on punk gigs and drag shows and spoken word nights and short film screenings, it's never the same twice so I recommend following them on Instagram to see the specific shows they do

Leith Arches: events space that hosts a variety of shows including a regular drag king night and other clubs or performances

Dog House: very fun bar hosting drag bingo or other performances. A little out of the way for me but every time ive been it's been fun!

Paradise Palms: foremost a smashing veggie food and drink place, but also regularly has queer performance nights

I know there's also regular drag shows at Subway, Three Sisters, and Casablanca in grassmarket, but I have not personally been

Fun places that are queer friendly but not explicitly doing events or anything, or aren't bars but worth knowing:

Kafe Kweer: queer-owned cafe that hosts craft fairs and galleries and suchlike

Lighthouse Books: radical leftist bookshop and love of my life

Banshee Labyrinth: spooky pub with cinema room and weekly karaoke

Mortal Kocktail: weird little alt bar full of old arcade machines

Argonaut Books: independent bookshop and community space with book group meetings including im pretty sure a queer themed book club

There's definitely more that I've missed, the queer scene in Edinburgh is so wonderful and vibrant and there's space for everybody if you know where to look!!

Who was the one to propose: 

Tariq. Duh. It sort of just…happens. For Ryan, anyways. For months, Tariq secretly stressed over how to do it. Part of him - the over the top person that he is, wanted an ‘all eyes on us’ kind of proposal. ‘Cause that’s what Ryan deserved. But the more he thought about it. The more he knew Ryan and what she’d want. He decided that a more lowkey proposal was the best way to go. So he did. He’d slipped the ring on her finger after she’d crashed hard from a double shift. The question in bold sharpie writing on one of her old bright pink note cards tapped on the bathroom mirror for her to see when she shuffled in. And the living room littered with her favorite flowers trailing from the bedroom, the table set with her now cold favorite meal and him chilling on the couch as if he hadn’t been waiting for hours for her to wake up.  

Who stressed more over wedding planning: 

Both. It’s the cultural clash that Tariq expected would happen after proposing to a good old, Southern Christian black girl. From the food to the music. To who’ll preside over their ceremony. “Should we just have a justice of the peace? I mean, it will be a interfaith marriage.” Tariq sighs and pulls Ryan into a silent hug. He is two seconds away from grabbing his fiancee and heading to the courthouse to marry her. Right the fuck now. Some of his uncles are asking if she’ll convert. Or if he will. His aunties are talking kids. And all Tariq wants - besides marrying the woman in his arms - is to take her somewhere quiet with nice ass weather so he can see her in as less clothing as possible. No wonder a few of his cousins laughed when they found out his fiancee was Christian. In the end, they work it out ‘cause failure was not a fucking option. But damn, if he isn’t looking forward to their honeymoon.

Who decorated the house:

It’s a weird mixture of both of their tastes. The integration of Ryan’s favorite colors with his (green and gold) is an interesting sight for Tariq. An argument - or several - originated from him learning not to use decorative pillows for anything other than aesthetics. “Pillows are used for sleeping, Nae.” “Not those, Tariq! You’ve smushed them. Do you know how much those cost?” And it’s not like Tariq didn’t know. He just assumed that as a grown man, he could sleep on any pillows in his house. …Apparently not all of them. “I’ll cash app you the money. Just.. damn.”

Who is more organized:

Ryan. Hands down. Not that Tariq isn’t organized. But Ryan likes things in their place. All the time. He knew that going into this. Them finally living together. And he thought that knew. Or that, at the very least, she’d tried to warn him. But…he’s… learning to keep his shoes are out of the way so she doesn’t trip in the dark of night as she trudges to bed exhausted. Or remember to put up reminders when he’s used the last of something. It’s not perfect but Tariq is learning.

Who initiates bedroom fun:

Tariq. But in his defense, have you seen his wife? He continues to give praise to Allah on that alone. Especially considering how they met. He’s been threatened with a ‘no-touching’ rule that has to go into effect when Ryan has important things to do. Like major reports to complete and things like that. But so far, Ryan hasn’t used it yet. She will though. One day. Until then, Tariq is more than willing to keep her distracted.

Who suggested kids first:

Verbally, between the two of them, it’s Ryan. Tariq shouldn’t find the anxious look she gives him, or the wringing of her hands and thinning of her lips, to be cute. But he does. His Ammi has been asking for a grandchild since a week after they returned from their honeymoon. Which, trust him. Tariq was trying. The idea of a unique, smaller version of them out and causing havoc in the world was something that Tariq couldn’t shake. “I’ve been waiting on you, Doc.” He laughs ‘cause it’s the truth. “Fuck yeah. Let’s do this.”

Who’s more dominant: 

Tariq. It’s not because he’s a man. But that Ryan has this unspoken thing about telling him what she wants aloud. He figured that out as he got to know Ryan. Not that she doesn’t have her moments. It’s weird but Tariq likes it. Which, dealing with him, appears to come easier and more regularly than before they met. Ryan’s not entirely demure - see how they met. It just has to coaxed out of her. Which is something Tariq doesn’t mind. At all. 

Who’s the cuddler:

Tariq. He’s a tactile communicator. He talks with his hands. He works with them. Like most people, he uses them often. But it’s just something about Ryan that makes him gravitate towards her. Like a ship steering towards a lighthouse near the coast. His hands have to touch some part of her. Most of the time. So cuddles are natural. He likes the feel of her near his side. Or front. And on his emotionally draining days, his back. Her fingers combing through his short hair as he listens to the beat of her heart. 

What’s their favorite non-sexual activity:

Cuddling aside? Ryan may or may not have gotten Tariq hooked on some trash tv show. One that, save to say, he does not watch without her. “Alright, alright. Explain this to me again?” They sat on the couch, Ryan curled against his side, as a earlier season of a Bravo reality tv show classic starts up. “Okay. So that’s Nene. She doesn’t like Kandi this season. That’s Kandi. Oh. And she’s not cool with Kim again - Nene, I mean - but they’ll probably make up in a few episodes. And then there’s Sheree…” Tariq will damned if he’s clowned for even knowing this. Let alone watching it. 

Who kills the spiders: 

Tariq is the go-to killer of all things creepy crawly. There’s this one instance of Ryan being unpleasantly surprised by a spider crawling along the shower wall. While she was in there. Ass naked. “Why’d you leave the window open, Ryan?” Tariq asked, in between chuckles. His sides hurting from laughing so hard. He’d thought a burglar was in there with her, from the scream he’d heard. “I got it. I got it. It’s dead now. Don’t worry.” Tariq almost slipped and fell from the water splatter on the floor left behind when Ryan hauled ass out of the shower to get to safety. “No, we’re not moving! You should’ve turned on the damn fan.”

Who falls asleep first:

They take turns. Mostly due to their erratic schedules. A first year doctor and a late-night hip hop radio personality? Of course sleep is the last thing on their minds. 

Who is louder?

Sexually? Ryan. Non-sexually? It depends. When it comes to the World Cup. Or football - see soccer - in general, Tariq is an obnoxiously loud fan. Anything that lets him proudly wear Pakistan’s colors is a guarantee for him “show out” as Ryan would say. On the flip side, she’s the same way about things she enjoys. So it depends on the season for both. Tariq is definitely louder when it comes to shit talking. He keeps trying to give Ryan pointers but “Who’s gonna stitch you up if I’m shit talking with you?”

Who is more experimental?

Both. Tariq isn’t afraid of try new things. But depending on the subject, Ryan can be more hesitant. “What do you mean, out here? Tariq. Have you lost your mind?” “Noori. It’s our honeymoon.” My light. It’s one of Tariq’s new nickname for Ryan. He’s been using it since they’ve got engaged. It’s becoming a favorite of his. “You’re telling me that you don’t wanna feel me under the stars? C’mon, nobody’s here.” They discover that mirrors are a great compromise. 

Do they fuck or make love?

Both. For someone who doesn’t drink, alcohol definitely plays a part in this. Tariq can tell the night he’ll have, depending on the number of drinks Ryan has. Nowhere is she like Amy from Brooklyn Nine Nine. But he’s learned the higher the number of drinks, the more likely fucking will happen over making love. Drinks aside - emotions are the other factor. If they’re in a stalemate as both of them can, and will be, stubborn as hell  - Tariq knows that the first few rounds of makeup sex can hardly be called that. Maybe a few things end up getting damaged or even broken. But in the end, his marriage is in tact. Which is all that matters.

Who is more likely to be caught masturbating?

Tariq has. Not that he planned on it. But, in his defense, it’d been a minute and he missed his wife. Obviously. Ryan was at work. Or well, he thought. The shower - yes the same one that Ryan had the classic run in with the spider - was supposed to be a safe place. But sleepy doctors do not like walking into their marital home hearing moans greeting them in the night. Especially from their husband. Without her. “So you gonna stand there or…?” Tariq shot Ryan a challenging eyebrow, stepping back in open invitation for her to join. So it was all good.  

Who comes first?

Ryan. It wasn’t for lack of not trying. It’s just that… well, she married a man that makes sure that she comes before him. Literally. Not that she’s complaining.

Who is better at oral and who prefers it?

For a good, old born and raised in the church Southern Christian, Ryan is excellent at oral. Which was a top-notch surprise for Tariq when he finally learned this fact. However, Tariq certainly prefers to give as good as he gets. He has this smug quirk that he does in the days following. Tariq struts around their place shirtless afterwards, proudly displaying his supposed battle scars from his efforts. Despite saying otherwise, he knows Ryan loves it.

Who usually initiates things?

For the most part - Tariq. Ryan initiates calling Tariq out on his shit. Or when she needs her stubborn husband to gain an objective perspective. A busted lip and bruised knuckles on her husband is not what she expects to see when paged down to the ER from her rotation in the lab. “You can’t just fight everybody that says stupid shit.” “What?!” “You can’t. What if something happens to you? What am I supposed to do then? I didn’t marry you to become a fucking widow, Tariq.” With a heavy sigh and an apology on his bloody mouth, Tariq agrees to pick his battles next time. 

Who is more sensitive?

Ryan. Hands down. She has the emotional sensitivity on lock. Physically - “Stop that shit.” Tariq jerked, his body moving from Ryan’s reach instinctively. “Are you…” “Nah, what’re you doing? Get your hands-” The noise that left Tariq neared a pterodactyl screech. “You’re ticklish!” “No the fuck I’m not.” “Stop moving. Let me see.” She could barely get the words out, laughing around them. “Ryan get your fucking hands away from me.” “Oh my god, Mr. Big and Bad, is ticklish. I got your ass now.” “Ryan!”

Who has the most patience?

Both. In different ways. Tariq directs people to the near-saint like patience he says he used while “waiting on my wife to stop being another man’s fiancee.” To which, his voice may sound annoyed but the confident smirk Tariq wears while uttering it says something else. As a doctor, Ryan has patience in spades. It’s something that Tariq jokes about - still he likes that about her. She’s the calm to his ongoing storm.

Time to relax...

This might sound pathetic given that we are on holiday but the first 10 days were pretty packed with sightseeing and that can be tiring even without a baby so we really enjoyed the end of our time in Sri Lanka at a beach resort in the South-West. It also coincided with Ged’s birthday which made for a brilliant day and gave Ged the chance to scratch ‘try surfing’ off his bucket list. This week we also went on a safari, had a traditional lunch at a family home, visited an elephant orphanage, the Dutch colonial fortified town of Galle, the 3rd tallest lighthouse in the world and a waterfall.

We have settled nicely into life on the road now. Woody is still sleeping in our bed, which I’m sure will wreak havoc when we try to get him back in his own room at home, but for now the advantages outway the thought of that! He is particularly happy sleeping like that (as you can see below) and we are getting more unbroken sleep doing this than we have had for months so hoping it continues! He did crawl off the bed one night which was a low-point but he is ok and we make crash pads to line the bed now in case it happens again (but really hoping it won’t if we cocoon him in enough with our legs!). We’ve also found that Woody makes a good phone stand for when we are watching Netflix.

Taking Woody to dinner asleep in the baby carrier only lasted a few nights as he was getting too hot and waking up and it’s also pretty uncomfortable for me or Ged too so we have changed his bedtime to 8.30pm instead of 7pm so he can come to dinner with us and then we put him down after that. It’s not the most leisurely dinner time but it’s the best we have managed so far and it means that he is sleeping in a bit later in the morning which is also better for while we are away.

Our guides in Sri Lanka were wonderful in the sense that they were really friendly and laid back and really lovely with Woody, but we did come to realise that they were pretty sketchy in the facts. When in Kandy I asked what the population was and they told me 20million. In fact the population of the whole country is only 20 million. On safari I asked how many elephants there were in Udawalawa National Park and our main guide said he didn’t know. Then 2 minutes later told me 50. And when we asked what type of whales we might see in Mirissa he said “dolphins”. I initially put this down to the language barrier (because we had numerous “rice paddy fields” and “cow” pointed out to us), but in the end we decided that giving facts just wasn’t their thing!

This week’s activities:

🐘 Elephant safari and Udawalawa. I love being out in the jeep spotting animals. There were loads of peacocks and beautiful birds and we saw a few elephants which I could watch for hours. We were with a lovely couple too so we had a really nice afternoon. I would probably recommend one of the other areas to anyone thinking of visiting though as they tend to have more variety and the elephants weren’t as numerous as I had imagined they would be.

🥙 Traditional lunch at a family home. We had typical Sri Lankan curry and rice made for us and served on banana leaves. They also use banana leaves instead of clingfilm which I thought was great, although possible more tricky to do in the U.K.! Sri Lankan curry and rice is a selection of about 6 different curry dishes, mostly veg, with one fish/meat and a dhal and rice and poppadoms. Ged impaled his gums on a bunch of fish bones and choked on a chilly while the guide tried to take photos of us.

🐘 Visit to Elephant Santuary. The santuary has been really successful in rehabilitating bambino elephants ready to be released back in to the wild and they were CUTE! I loved whatching then stomprun with excitement up to the milk givers.

🏝 Mirissa beach stay. This really exceeded our expectations. We didn’t think the hotel was going to be too great and I wasn’t sure that the beach and sea would be as nice as your would imagine for the Indian Ocean either. However, the hotel was right on the beach, the food was the best we had had, the beach and sea were really clean, the water like being in a bath and the bay had a lovely chilled backpacker-ey and family vibe. We had a lovely couple of days walking on the beach, paddling, eating, swimming and drinking passion fruit juice! 😋

🎂 Ged’s birthday - so easy to make a birthday special in a setting as we were. We went for a walk on the empty beach before breakfast and had breakfast overlooking the beach. Then Ged did a surf lesson with a local guy which was a long held ambition of his. We spent the rest of the day swimming and took Woody in the sea for the first time ever. The hotel made a beautiful chocolate birthday cake too and bought it out at dinner with candles in it. It was such a great day and a birthday to remember.

We really loved Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 and the beauty of its landscapes and people. It’s easy to see why it has been voted the No 1 place to visit by The Lonely Planet and The Sunday Times. We just hope that the boom in tourism that is sure to follow doesn’t dilute the people’s passion for looking after their country and each other.

So our next stop is a month at a yoga village in Goa and we woke up on our last morning in Sri Lanka to find Woody asleep in King Pigeon pose so we think he is on board. 🙏

Kandy Festival, Sri Lanka

Day 01 – Arrive Colombo – Negambo   Arrive Colombo (Sri Lanka). Meet our representative upon arrival at Colombo airport and transfer to a hotel in Negambo. It is a famous fishing village that is equally proud of its Dutch fort and other Dutch period architecture. Overnight at the Negambo.

Day 02 – Negambo – Sigiriya This morning travel to Sigiriya (Approx. 145kms/ 04hours), home to the 5th-century UNESCO World Heritage listed Rock Fortress, also known as ‘Lion Rock’. The rock fortress was built by King Kashyapa and was named so because a massive lion was carved out of the rock and once sat at the entrance to the palace. Today only the lion’s paws remain. While here you can climb to the top for panoramic views of the area and explore the surrounding gardens.

In the afternoon take a jeep safari through the Kaudulla National Park, looking for elephants, deer, peacocks, boars, and many kinds of birds. Overnight at the Sigiriya.

Day 03 – Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa – Sigiriya Today visit the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage listed site. Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka from 11th to the 12th centuries and is a well preserved city of stupas, frescoes and statues. While here, explore the Gal Viharaya, a magnificent group of rock temples consisting of four separate statues.

Explore the Vatadage, an ancient structure with elaborate stone carvings that are commonly placed at entrances to monastic buildings of ancient Sri Lanka. Return to the Sigiriya for overnight.

Day 04 – Sigiriya – Dambulla – Kandy After breakfast, travel to Kandy (Approx. 90kms/ 02 ½ hours) en route visit the Dambulla Rock Temple. Dating back to the 1st century BC, the temple is made up of five caves that have been converted into shrine rooms containing around 150 Buddha statues and colourful frescoes.

Continue your drive to Kandy and en route visit spice garden of Matale. Here cinnamon, cardamom, pepper creepers and other spice are grown. Learn about how to use spices in Sri Lankan cuisine and watch a cooking demonstration.

Upon arrival in Kandy, transfer to the hotel and later witness Kandy festival or Festival of Tooth. In this festival hundreds of musicians, dancers and other artists participate along with large numbers of Elephants who accompany them. Overnight at the Kandy.

Day 05 – Kandy (Festival of Tooth or Esala Perahera) This morning after breakfast, visit the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens with a fine collection of over 4000 species of exotic plants and later visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most revered Buddhist sites in the world. The temple houses an important Buddhist Relic, a tooth of the Buddha. Stolen at his funeral, the tooth was smuggled into Sri Lanka hidden in the hair of a princess who fled from India. The relic of the tooth is kept in a two-storey shrine fronted by large elephant trunks. Explore the remains of the Royal Palace, now a museum.

Spend your another evening in Kandy festival. Interact with local people, watch cultural dance performance and try Sri Lanka food. Overnight at the Kandy.

Day 06 – Kandy – Nuwara Eliya After breakfast drive to Nuwara Eliya (Approx. 80kms/ 03hours). Visit a tea factory en-route to see how the world’s favorite drink is prepared. Nuwara Eliya resembles an old English town, complete with a lake, race track and well- kept lawns with hedges, an Anglican Church and an 18hole golf course.

Visit Hakgala Botanical Gardens, which houses an exotic collection of roses and ferns. Overnight at the Nuwara Eliya.

Day 07 – Nuwara Eliya – Udawalawe – Yala National Park   Today travel to the Elephant transit home located in Udawalawe National Park, where abandoned baby elephants are cared for before they are released into the Udawalawe National Park.

Later drive to Yala National Park (approx. 01 ½ hours) which is one of Sri Lanka’s premier eco-tourism destinations, where you can watch closely Leopard, Elephants and unique varieties of Birds. Evening is free for relaxation. Overnight at the Yala National Park.

Day 08 – Yala National Park   Enjoy morning and afternoon jeep safaris around the park, home to leopards, elephants and deer. One of the world’s largest populations of leopards can be found here.

Day 09 – Yala National Park – Galle     Today after breakfast, drive to Galle (Approx. 185kms / 03hours) en route visit Hummanaya blow hole, the second largest of its kind in the world. Later, continue to Dikwella Wewurukannala Temple dominated by an image of a seated Buddha that is over 48m high.

Post visit drive along the coastline towards Galle. Stop along the way at Weligama to see the unique stilt shermen, an old tradition practiced by around 500 fishing families in the region. Each fisherman has a stilt and balances about 2m above the water. With one hand they hold the stilt and with the other they use their fishing rod.

Upon arrival, check in to the beach resort and spend your evening in leisure. Overnight at the Galle.

Day 10 – Galle Today after breakfast start city tour of Galle including the lighthouse and the Old Town. Also visit the UNESCO World Heritage listed Dutch Fort, the largest intact Dutch fort in Asia. Within the ramparts and stonewalls of Galle Fort outstanding buildings remain. The narrow streets are dotted with Dutch colonial villas, museums and antique shops.

In the afternoon, relax at your beach resort. Overnight at the Galle.

Day 11 – Galle – Colombo Today after breakfast travel to Colombo (Approx. 140kms/ 03 hours), en-route visiting Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery. The hatchery is home to Sri Lanka’s pioneering sea turtle conservation project, established in 1981 to protect Sri Lanka’s turtles.

Upon arrival in Colombo, start your city tour which includes Fort district, the historic center of the city. Wander through Pettah Market. Visit the Dutch Church of Wolfendhall dating back to 1749, Kelaniya Buddhist Temple, a major pilgrimage site for Buddhist devotees, and the Colombo and Natural History museums.

Late night you will be transferred to Colombo airport to board your flight for onward destination.

A/N: Credit to @aborddelimpala for the gif, thank you to @wayward-girl for listening to me whine about how emotional I was while writing this, and I really hope I didn’t just ruin one of my favorite fics by adding on to it. Written for this year’s RPF Appreciation Day.

“Buddy, you okay?” Jensen pulled his mic away from his mouth and clapped his hand onto Jared’s shoulder. Jared’s eyes were wide, then clenched shut as he shook his head, hand gripping the microphone tight until his knuckles turned white. Jensen set his mic down on the chair and snatched Jared’s water bottle, pushing it into his hand. Grabbing his microphone again, he hurriedly told the crowd, “We’ll be back in a few, sorry guys,” and rushed Jared backstage. 

“Everything okay?” One of the ImAlive volunteers darted to Jared and Jensen, and Jared again shook his head. 

“I’m not really sure what happened. I kinda zoned out while he was answering that last question, and then when I looked at him, I could tell what was coming.” Jensen’s hand didn’t leave Jared’s shoulder. 

“It was too much.” Jared whispered, his voice broken. 

“What was too much?” Jensen crouched down in front of Jared where he was sitting, making sure there was direct eye contact. 

“The question. The fans. They expect me to be so damn strong all the time, and… I can’t. I can’t be their support, I can’t be their outlet, I can’t-” Jared blurted.

“You don’t have to be any of that.” Jensen stood and patted Jared’s back between his shoulder blades. “Drink some water and see if you can get your breathing back to normal, yeah?” He squeezed Jared’s shoulder as Jared nodded. Jensen patted Jared on the back of the head, and Jared gave him a little smile.

Within a few minutes, Jared was slightly calmer, and ready and willing to hit the stage again. The pair walked out during some bantering between Rob and Rich who had stepped in to clear the air and fill the awkward break.

“Sorry about that guys!” Jensen smiled and gave a little wave, then they both blew kisses to the audience. “You have to understand, I can tell as soon as something is up with the big guy.” Jensen winked at Jared. “And something was up. Admittedly, I wasn’t exactly present for his answer to your question, and I’m sorry for that, but there’s something else you all have to realize.” 

“Don’t.” Jared whispered, wide eyed and head shaking quickly. 

“This is one of my best friends in the world.” Jensen grabbed Jared’s shoulder once more as Jared nodded in agreement, then reached back and gave a loving pat to Jensen’s upper arm. “And this fandom - this family - that we’ve all built together, it’s a great thing, and it’s something that no one else can say they have - this relationship between you guys and us. Your stories are important, your battles are important, and the way you find the strength to always keep fighting-” he air-quoted, earning a smile from Jared “- that is beyond important. But it’s equally important to remember that Jared has overcome some of that same stuff, and is still working every day to fight through it. We want to hear your stories, really, we do, and I wish we could sit down with each one of you and listen to you tell us about how much you’ve been through and admire the fact that you’re still here. We can’t, and you need to remember that in this setting - this isn’t the place to tell us.”

“Jen.” Jared put his hand on Jensen’s arm and shook his head. “I got it.” Jensen gave a skeptical look, but let Jared continue talking to the fans. “We love y’all so much, and what you’ve given us - the support you’ve given me - over the last few years has been absolutely incredible, but… there are hard days for all of us. Today was a particularly hard day for me, so answering that question kind of tipped the scale and sent me spiraling. I do apologize for that, and I’m sure I could’ve handled it better-” 

“You don’t need to handle it better, Jare. You did what you needed to do, and that was step away.” Jensen spoke away from the microphone, but Jared waved his hand, motioning for Jensen to let him keep going.

“I could’ve handled it better, and I didn’t, and I’m sorry. But Jensen? Jensen has been… my saving grace. Jensen has been there for me every time I’ve needed him since we met all those years ago.” Jared turned away from the fan at the microphone in the crowd and looked at Jensen. “I’m okay, and Jay?” 

“Yeah?” Jensen sighed.

“I promise.” Jared smacked his palm against the side of Jensen’s head and gave a sharp nod. As Jensen cleared his throat and ran his hand down his face, wiping away tears nobody but Jared had seen, Rob walked to Jensen’s other side and whispered something in his ear.

“Yeah, I think now’s a good time.” Jensen nodded and moved his stool, stepping up to a microphone stand and adjusting it. “We’re gonna try something a little new here. An appropriate song, given the basis of our show, and the friendship between me and this one.” He pointed across the stage at Jared, who stayed seated, a confused expression crossing his face. The band started playing, Rob and a few others started clapping and “ooh”-ing as Jensen readied himself to take the lead vocals.

Jensen’s head turned to look at Jared, then tapped his chest over his heart. Jared had disappeared backstage after the first verse. He knew the song, he and Jensen had started calling it their “anthem” after the first time he’d made Jensen listen to it. Jensen made plans with Rob and the rest of the band to play it at a convention in the future, but they didn’t decide on which one until minutes before they started playing. Jensen stumbled over a few of the words, not having practiced a whole lot, but it didn’t matter. He was singing for Jared, and he knew his best friend wouldn’t judge him. Jared might tease him and poke fun as his mumbling into the microphone, but it was all in good fun. 

Jensen continued to sing Brother at conventions to follow, his eyes always searching for Jared, sometimes pointing to him, and never failing to tap the left side of his chest. Other songs came and went, but Brother was it, Brother was the song that fit Jared and Jensen and all they’d been through to a tee. One night, while Jared was sitting in his trailer strumming his guitar, he decided to look up the tabs for the song. As his fingers picked at the strings, he smiled and grabbed his phone, typing out a message to Jensen.

“Everybody needs someone beside them shining like a lighthouse from the sea. Thanks for being my lighthouse, brother.”
