As some of you may or may not know, I recently left my job as a reporter at a major newspaper to sell out (go corporate lol). In honor of my time in news (7 years) and with all my newfound creative energy now that I’m not writing 24/7 for work, here’s a teaser of a galex newsroom au

After midnight, the lights in the newsroom turn off if they don’t sense movement.

So when Alex is plunged into darkness -- the only light coming from the sickly gleam of Adobe Premiere on his desktop and the Times Square billboards through the office windows -- he just sighs.

Alex sticks his arms over his head, waving like a car dealership blow-up man. That always does the trick.

As the lights click back on, Carlos, a video strategist, peeks his head out from the miniscule glass-walled pod he was occupying a few rows down, balancing his tiny Macbook in one hand. It was hard not to be jealous as Alex’s behemoth of a video-editing desktop whirs. Covered in dust, one desk over, a particularly cheerful trout grins from the fish-of-the-day calendar Logan left behind.

Carlos scrubs his hand across his face, flexing his jaw. “Ay, how’s the edit coming? How did it get so late?”

Alex huffs. The strategy guys have no respect for the process. All they care about is how big they can make arrows on thumbnails, and then telling the bureau chiefs that that’s what made Alex’s mini-doc get 2 million views on YouTube.

The edit was, actually, coming. Kinda.

It hadn’t started until 4:00pm -- even though Alex had gotten to the office at 9:58am, sliding straight into the clump of reporters in the back of the 10:00am daily news briefing unnoticed.

His executive producer James had surreptitiously waved his phone from his seat up front next to the other chiefs, and Alex dutifully pulled up Slack on his phone.

10:02am:

James Vowles (EP): Looking like they want a video on the new tariff ruling to run tomorrow morning.

Alex Albon: lol

Alex holds back a groan. Susie, the London Bureau Chief, is in the middle of talking up her reporter Dorianne’s article on the food supply in Gaza, clearly trying to get the headline bumped higher on the paper’s home page. Unfortunately, the room in New York was entirely focused on a less-worthy but more clickable story: this morning, a national trade court had invalidated a bunch of tariffs. Because they just couldn’t do it after Alex had his morning coffee.

Anyway, Alex didn’t get his cameras rolling until 2:30pm, didn’t get the transcript of Max’s interview until 3:00pm, and didn’t have the script locked until 4:00pm.

But the real work didn’t start until after the rest of the team had gone home -- the cameraman Patrick slapping Alex on the back in solidarity as he left to catch the train -- because, of course, Max and Christian and the econ guys had forgotten their desk wasn’t the center of the universe, and still had to run their article by Standards.

Every newspaper worth reading had a Standards desk, of course, but their overwhelming reach and power at The Times still blew Alex away, even though he’d been at the paper for three years. Their job was to read the most important stories, the stories that could move markets -- and make sure every word was so phenomenally buttoned-up that the paper could never, ever, be accused of falsehood.

So while James reviewed Alex’s latest cut of the video, AA_2025_tariffs_boogaloo.mp4, he decided to take a jaunt across the newsroom to the Standards desk and see George.

No one told you when you started out that your favourite thing about content creation would be the webcam quality. Of course, it was definitely something you could live without, but on nights when it was just you and Wilbur, a video call on your desktop as your sun rose and his set, the fact that you could see him in picture perfect vision was occasionally the only thing holding you together. 

But then suddenly, he was right in front of you.

You and Wilbur had been together for nearly three years, meeting at a creator event ages ago. You’d seen him at a panel and he’d waited in line to meet you just to give you his phone number, asking you to call him, and two weeks later he was calling you darling. 

You’d known at that first meeting that you lived awfully far from each other, but that hadn’t been thought of as a particularly big issue until the two of you started dating, and then it was comparable to torture. You’d have semi-regular meetings where he’d fly to your place and stay with you for a couple of days. This time, though, this was different.

“You have been holding out on me,” your voice was heavy with sleep, your head in Wilbur’s lap as the two of you watched something, some nature documentary that was playing so softly it was almost designed to put you to sleep. “Your couch is so much more comfortable than mine is.”

Wilbur looked down at you fondly. “My bad,” he laughed steadily, careful not to be too loud. “I guess I thought that if you got to experience the wonders of my sofa you’d only wanna come here, I wouldn’t get to come see you as much.”

“I knew you and Mr Gardener had some weird thing going on,” you said, accusatory with a smile draped across your face.

“He makes you bread!” Wilbur defended. “How are you not obsessed with him?”

You cracked one of your eyes open sleepily, hand coming up to reach for his. He took it eagerly, drinking in your figure as you lay on his couch. “I’m pretty sure he’s not the one doing it.”

Wilbur threw his head back to rest against the couch, letting out a puff of air. “Okay, maybe Emily is the one doing the actual baking, but you can’t tell me that Mr Gardener doesn’t add to the experience.”

“I’m sure he does.” You hummed.

“You can not seriously tell me that baking a loaf of bread is not made infinitely better by the presence of a cat.”

You paused. “Okay, okay. It would be.”

Wilbur let out a pleased noise, moving down to run his hands up and down the exposed skin by your collarbone. “We should get a cat,”

His voice was barely loud enough for you to hear it, your eyes closed and his voice heavy with exhaustion. The two of you had been out all day on the first day of your visit, finally taking a moment to rest. 

“Should we?” You mused. “Who gets custody?”

Wilbur made a choking sound like the answer was obvious. “Well- I would, right?”

You forced yourself up, yawning as you brought your knees to your chest. “Why am I jealous of our hypothetical cat right now?”

Wilbur chuckled and reached for you, sitting forward on his knees, gently tugging at your calves until he was resting on your chest. “You don’t have to be,” he pointed out. “I’ve got a very big bed. And an entire section of wardrobe that I’m not using, and-”

“Wilbur,” you chided. “You know it’s not as easy as me simply never going home. Believe me, if I could spend the rest of my life curled into this couch, I would but-”

Wilbur sighed dramatically, pulling himself off you and standing up. “There you go, dream crusher,” he let out an exaggerated groan, taking you by the hand and pulling you up. His cheek was pressed against the side of your face, hands interlocked. “Crushing my dreams all crush-ier and dreamy.”

You let out a giggle as he poked your side. “You think I’m dreamy?”

“So dreamy,” he nodded. “Dream girl material right here, loves me, loves our future cat-”

“Loves your sofa,” you added dreamily. 

“And before I let you two get a room, please just consider moving in with me?” He begged gently. “Come on, wouldn’t it be so nice? Just you and me, I’d even let you name the cat. Please?”

“I’m not doing it for you.” You conceded. “I’m doing it for Rhubarb and all of the future kisses I am going to get from him on my new couch.”

He kissed you on the forehead. “Okay, I’ll leave you guys alone, I see where I’m not wanted.” He pressed another one on the side of your mouth.

“No,” you groaned, trying to drag him back on the couch. “I don’t have our cat yet, I need someone to shower me with affection.”

how the hell do i describe that unckuna fic with my limited vocabulary. but the change of reader & sukuna (still an asshole throughout and i love him (and u) very much for it) from that polite distance, to dependency to him, to him distancing himself because he saw how fucked it is, not from his own vision but by placing himself in someone else's shoes and then the confrontation and the ending that made me PRAY there's another part. it's not just the smut that captivated me (which is surprising 4 me cause i came for that if i had to confess) but the whole entirety of reader and sukuna's dynamic that you made really intricate is what really stood out. how you write them that makes me even question why. i feel every ounce of shame, disappointment, embarrassment, more shame,, even anger. and now im just eagerly waiting on that next part. cause i know you'd ate.

iirc your next fic that i consumed is To Be Human. loved it. made me more in love with sukuna. cried a bit at the end. the reader is so funny in a way and how she and sukuna slowly became more and more intimate? and sukuna burning down that village for her?? and how you just ended it like THAT??? thought i'd hate it but i physically cant cause my hand just keeps clicking on it to reread every once in a while.

the oneshots are so fucking funny too. cackled at the dead of night, truly lived up to the name of no 1 sukuna tormentor. why is reader such a menace. i love her.

my next dddne from you is Nightingale, this one, well, i actually read it with breaks every few days cause it was the last thing and i didnt wanna run out of stuff to read. that series introduced me to a whole lotta genre i would've thought nasty (dont stop) and refuse to eat but honestly? naur the dread reading it is actually lowkey addicting. imsosorryimyapping.

im thrilled that you could see what i was trying to lay out with the unckuna fic which is that it’s not only smutty kink stuff but meant to make the reader also feel the range of emotions that i assume would realistically arise in such a situation. ive probably already said this before but i think a lot of incest fics ive come across were just kink stuff and it read like “yeah im fucking my uncle and im super chill abt it” which ofc nothing wrong with that (in fics), but i personally see incest as almost ….psychological horror tbh.

and that element of “horror” is something im purposefully leaning into the next part like it’s supposed to be as erotic as it is deeply uncomfortable but at the same time im kinda nervous about it for some reason because balancing those elements is kinda hard and i might just ask for a beta reader when i finish the entire part to make sure it feels alright

i think to be human was the first time i dipped my feet trying a new type of format where an entire story is basically told in a long(ish) one shot. i went into a deep dive of kitsune lore and mythology for that one and basically there were some interesting themes of humanity - i think one thing i wanted to stress in that point is sukuna’s humanity. despite everything, even with his four arms and cannibalistic tendencies and however much he tries to deny it, sukuna was still a human, and that is in indirectly in a way what led to that ending. (speaking of endings can you tell im obsessed with bittersweet endings)

the oneshots… listen i think i have some kind of jester blood in me there’s just some innate need to bother my loved ones and if sukuna was real he would not catch a single break 😭😭😭

im a time traveller from the future. the 4.1 feature update in october or whatever added something lifechanging incredible why cant i use it! perpetual license only gives you up to 4.0 features. which includes 4.0 and 3.2, 3.1, 3.0 etc etc. you dont get 4.1 or 4.2 stuff. you have to wait for 5.0 perpetual for those. if youre impatient you can pay 11 dollars for an update pass that lasts 1 year and is functionally the same as a 1 year subscription. the update pass is only available if u have perpetual license and never goes on sale so its always 11 dollars which is coincidentally about the same price as an on-sale 1 year sub.

i use ipad tablet or android phone perpetual license is only for desktops. mobile devices can only have subscription. 1 year sub is on sale for $10.79 though (its usually $27)

This is the best outcome really, just nod, let him design his sprites and talk to him about how weird this is and wonder if any other characters have come to life in other people's copies and how this happened at all. Just treat him like a strange desktop friend. From the computer he can do a lot to theoretically ruin your life, but due to his usual habits he's pretty unlikely to actually be OVERLY harmful as long as you let him boss you around a bit and don't go anywhere without him via getting access to your phone.

He is eventually going to want a physical body though but like, that's MUCH later and he certainly isn't going to expect some random ass person to know how to make an android or something. Also potentially MUCH MUCH later some kind of "if i make you a program you cant die" but thats like, a long while away because of how LONG it would take to just make and how its not currently a priority thats like, you got DECADES before you gotta worry about getting matrixed.

If anything it might be an overall net positive because he is going to be like "i can do so much stock market manipulation and wire fraud like this" and now suddenly your bank account has just tripled. Can you change the way your phone looks with a different launcher? It depends what part is pissing you off, but you should be able to make the 'desktop' and all the icons on there look however you want. A bandaid, obviously, but maybe a slightly better user experience?

it is mostly like, the actual physical phone is now modelled after the iphone which i find ugly, and also the problem with almost all phones/new devices now where your aesthetic customisation options are so limited. for example there's a bunch of excess panels in the quick settings tray which you can't remove, or you cant even choose the colour of app icons when you choose a theme you can only choose the base colour of the theme and everything else is auto picked. idk its just so annoying like. let me decide how i want my shit to look and function bro this is MY device

Oh yeah since ive realized i cant do one big masterpost abt my security breach rewrite like i wanted due to image limit stuff (i did all the art on my phone and trying to get it on desktop is a painful process), im just making lil snippet posts to slowly feed you guys information. As per usual, it’s a long post so all the info will be under the cut

Starting off! Protagonist role is shifted over to Vanessa (Gregory still plays a decently important role story-wise, but he loses his protag rights), the ‘gameplay’ (said like that bc its hypothetical. Im not making a game) being split into two sections: the Dayshift Phase, and the Nightshift Phase.

Dayshift Phase (which is the focus of this post) is very simple in nature, but also the part that I have less specific details for at the moment due to it being less impactful on the overall story.

Essentially, Vanessa spends this phase running a variety of errands and tasks within the Pizzaplex, spread across over the span of a 5 day work week. For obvious reasons. While the majority of tasks come from whoever her higher ups are (the newest ceo of fazent will be revealed in a later post), there are a few oddballs mixed in thanks to the 80’s serial killer that lives inside her head. Because we’re ignoring Mimic in this au. At least for now. William has no physical presence in the rewrite though, he’s moreso haunting the narrative just as much as he’s haunting Vanessa. It’s complicated and I’ll get into the changes in a different posts where I’ll discuss the changes that have been made to the Glitchtrap situation, as well as discuss the other employees mentioned in Help Wanted.

The map itself doesn’t change too much. Glamrock Bonnie gets to live in this au (i needed him alive and present for. Reasons I’ll discuss when I get to the Nightshift Phase) and Glamrock Chica gets an actual, proper attraction, which is a rollerskating rink. Yes this means her feet/talons/whatever-the-term-is double as heelys.

But, to start off, here’s the main gal herself!

Vanessa, obviously, gets the rainbow hair back. Because it was the most iconic part of Vanny before SB came out imo. She’s a bit more of an anxious mess, but I would be too if I was under the psychological influence of a serial killer. Her job pretty much stays the same, now working both dayshift and nightshift at the Pizzaplex. Because in true FazEnt fashion, the employees are not treated fantastically.

She doesn’t like talking about either of the founders for wildly different reasons. Headmaster Grimm feels like it's too easy to say "I hate you" despite that being true. Because he is a deliberate villain. Hate the fucker in canon, in your rewrite I like him a lot as a villain very intimidating love it.

I honestly had to google other faculty since they're so forgettable in my brain. Looking at the wiki I think I'm gonna go with Jack B Nimble just because what I remember he's silly as hell and he seemed like a genuinely good teacher, modifying his assignment for Cedar so she was able to do the work. Very fair in listening to his students.

In middle school we were given chrome books. In freshmen year of high school we were required to take a tech class that taught us how to use things like excel. I am 19, this was ~2018. Which doesnt feel like that long ago to me.

Except that was 6 years ago.

When I finally got my school computer, I abused the hell out of it. I brute forced internet literacy because it was an escape for me. It was new and cool, and my brother had one so I wanted to learn and catch up with him. Even though my highschool had a tech class, it was not at all thorough. I taught myself keywording and plugins and antivirus and a whole host of other things, and Im still learning.

That being said, I think this is a symptom of a much larger problem of "i-pad" kids. Kids who grow up on apps and tablets and phones, so when their school gives them very regulated/limited computers, they don't branch out. They think they know how the internet works because they use the internet on their phones, dont they? But when handed computers, theyre often chromebooks, which give app-like toolbars with things like chrome or google docs.

Technology feels like its going away from browser based to app based, even in phones. I had an iphone for about a year and hated it because safari felt so unintuitive. Websites have mobile-specific versions that lack features, so you have to find desktop mode to actually do things. You can't access files on a phone, so people dont know how to do that on a computer. We've equated phones to the internet and computers so much that people forget that a phone cant even compare to a pc or even a laptop.

As someone who loves modding games, and loves teaching my friends how to mod games, you'd be suprised on how many people who really did grow up with the internet have no idea how it actually works.

And that is terrifying.

Which is about people wanting an AO3 app, but then it became large and way off topic, so here you go.

Nobody under the age of 20 knows how to use a computer or the internet. At all. They only know how to use apps. Their whole lives are in their phones or *maybe* a tablet/iPad if they're an artist. This is becoming a huge concern.

I'm a private tutor for middle- and high-school students, and since 2020 my business has been 100% virtual. Either the student's on a tablet, which comes with its own series of problems for screen-sharing and file access, or they're on mom's or dad's computer, and they have zero understanding of it.

They also don't know what the internet is, or even the absolute basics of how it works. You might not think that's an important thing to know, but stick with me.

Last week I accepted a new student. The first session is always about the tech -- I tell them this in advance, that they'll have to set up a few things, but once we're set up, we'll be good to go. They all say the same thing -- it won't be a problem because they're so "online" that they get technology easily.

I never laugh in their faces, but it's always a close thing. Because they are expecting an app. They are not expecting to be shown how little they actually know about tech.

I must say up front: this story is not an outlier. This is *every* student during their first session with me. Every single one. I go through this with each of them because most of them learn more, and more solidly, via discussion and discovery rather than direct instruction.

Once she logged in, I asked her to click on the icon for screen-sharing. I described the icon, then started with "Okay, move your mouse to the bottom right corner of the screen." She did the thing that those of us who are old enough to remember the beginnings of widespread home computers remember - picked up the mouse and moved it and then put it down. I explained she had to pull the mouse along the surface, and then click on the icon. She found this cumbersome. I asked if she was on a laptop or desktop computer. She didn't know what I meant. I asked if the computer screen was connected to the keyboard as one piece of machinery that you can open and close, or if there was a monitor - like a TV - and the keyboard was connected to another machine either by cord or by Bluetooth. Once we figured it out was a laptop, I asked her if she could use the touchpad, because it's similar (though not equivalent) to a phone screen in terms of touching clicking and dragging.

Once we got her using the touchpad, we tried screen-sharing again. We got it working, to an extent, but she was having trouble with... lots of things. I asked if she could email me a download or a photo of her homework instead, and we could both have a copy, and talk through it rather than put it on the screen, and we'd worry about learning more tech another day. She said she tried, but her email blocked her from sending anything to me.

This is because the only email address she has is for school, and she never uses email for any other purpose. I asked if her mom or dad could email it to me. They weren't home.

(Re: school email that blocks any emails not whitelisted by the school: that's great for kids as are all parental controls for young ones, but 16-year-olds really should be getting used to using an email that belongs to them, not an institution.)

I asked if the homework was on a paper handout, or in a book, or on the computer. She said it was on the computer. Great! I asked her where it was saved. She didn't know. I asked her to search for the name of the file. She said she already did that and now it was on her screen. Then, she said to me: "You can just search for it yourself - it's Chapter 5, page 11."

This is because homework is on the school's website, in her math class's homework section, which is where she searched. For her, that was "searching the internet."

Her concepts of "on my computer" "on the internet" or "on my school's website" are all the same thing. If something is displayed on the monitor, it's "on the internet" and "on my phone/tablet/computer" and "on the school's website."

She doesn't understand "upload" or "download," because she does her homework on the school's website and hits a "submit" button when she's done. I asked her how she shares photos and stuff with friends; she said she posts to Snapchat or TikTok, or she AirDrops. (She said she sometimes uses Insta, though she said Insta is more "for old people"). So in her world, there's a button for "post" or "share," and that's how you put things on "the internet".

She doesn't know how it works. None of it. And she doesn't know how to use it, either.

Also, none of them can type. Not a one. They don't want to learn how, because "everything is on my phone."

And you know, maybe that's where we're headed. Maybe one day, everything will be on "my phone" and computers as we know them will be a thing of the past. But for the time being, they're not. Students need to learn how to use computers. They need to learn how to type. No one is telling them this, because people think teenagers are "digital natives." And to an extent, they are, but the definition of that has changed radically in the last 20-30 years. Today it means "everything is on my phone."

i wanna play the other games on mobile (i used to play star rail on mobile ngl LMFAO then realized 'hey this is fun' and moved to pc after genshin got too big. or maybe i had both at the same time i cant remember now ghreuigh) but uhm. the farthest i get in wuwa on mobile is like the opening loading screen before we see the rovers (it just stops there. even the music stops i think?? ive left it on and did other stuff but nothing happened and its either it wants me to wait super long, or theres just no hope) i did the tutorial for solo leveling arise on mobile but then trying to do literally anything else (like trying to access the menu) kicks me out of the game so then i had to move to pc. genuinely scary game first time around it shut down my pc, and even at lowest graphics kept warning me that 'for smoother gameplay you should have lower graphics' or something so fan on all the time (i have a fan pointed directly at my laptop.) and honestly. im not even that big of a fan of solo leveling why am i here (meilin fisher that is why. anyway i got her. so. shes not even an actual character outside the game??) ive literally only seen the anime and i forgot most of it😭

zzz on my phone is just black screen. it kicks me out. the farthest ive gotten is it asking if i want notifications but it still kicks me out

and in the case its actually storage.. uh. tough luck. nu carnival is. a gacha game. and i got the character i wanted there, but its more convenient to go through like daily kinda stuff. ..also confession time if yk the difference uh. listen it was a hassle downloading it im not gonna delete it then have to reteach myself how tf to download it again because oh my god

twisted wonderland (aka disney tw LOL) is my OTHER fixation besides star rail. ive gone through all the story (including JP which i dont have cause i cant read it but fan translations for the win) + most event stories (i havent gone through anniversaries, new year sale 2024 JP, and like i think theres a crewel one rn..? or thats just the new card., tapis rouge, playful land, thats it). i love this game. so much.

Begrudgingly trying to look for a new phone because my current one (which I’ve had for 8 years) is having some issues but like......hhh.. Every person I know who has a newer phone like.. theirs SUCKS lol.. you can’t take the back off/battery out, some you can’t even change out the microSD because apparently they expect you to just use evil ~~cloud storage~~ or whatever nonsense, they come with so many apps built in which you can disable but not fully delete (wasting space on the phone), can’t control when updates happen, one of my friend’s has to be connected to the internet just to get voicemails??? like having to be connected to wifi or mobile data just for some BASIC functionalities is insane (I prefer to keep my internet disabled at all times unless using it, hate the idea of just being internet connected constantly in the background and having all these apps sending and receiving data and giving dumbass notifications when I’m not even actively using them), SOME of them don’t even have a built-in GENERIC notes app or media player (like I’m just supposed to download spotify instead of using my collection of youtube to mp3 files?? lmao) or photo viewer (I know someone who doesn’t have a generic ‘photos’ app, just “Google Photos’ which prompts them to make an account and login every time they open the wretched thing), etc. etc. etc. 

Genuinely, if it weren’t for my need to be able to use the internet to map and check bus directions/look up things on the go when needed, organize/transport files, and take photos on a whim when I may not have my camera with me - I would legit just get one of those basic non-smart phones where you can only text and make calls lol ... alas... ToT
