"I've been a professional artist and illustrator for decades. Like most artists, I was concerned when AI image generators hit the scene. But since they sucked at first, I wasn't all that worried... but then they started to get much better, really fast. I figured I should look a bit closer to see if I should be worried.

What I found was that they really are a powerful tool if used creatively, but they are *nowhere near* a replacement for human artists. They don't understand context, they spit out a lot of garbage that needs a ton of work to refine into something useful, and you still need an artist's eye to know how to direct them to make anything that's actually good. This is why you see so many people complaining about all the bad AI art. Because there really is a lot of bad AI art out there. The good AI art? People don't even know it's AI in many cases.

But as an artist who has been around since before the days of computer art, I have had to adapt to many changes. I adapted to using a computer to make my illustrations to keep up with the times. I learned to use Photoshop. I learned to use Blender (although admittedly not very well). I see this as necessary in a world where technology is constantly evolving; you need to evolve and adapt with the tech, or you will get left behind. So naturally I looked into ways to use AI generators to help in my work flow.

I started out by using it to create textures. One thing I have always done is use a blend of photo textures in my digital paintings to create visual noise and interest. It's a great technique that's been around for years. Being able to generate my own textures with AI means that I can get exactly the texture I want, much quicker than looking through stock images or going out with a camera trying to find new textures.

As AI image generators improved, and as my prompt skills improved, I started using them to generate thumbnail images to work off of, and to generate models to use as reference, etc.

I have always been very open with my clients about my work flow, and I've never had a problem with that. If I have a client who is opposed to my use of AI, then I don't use it when working for that client. No big deal. I have some clients who actually prefer that I use AI in my work flow, as it helps smooth the process along, gives me more flexibility, and they believe that the end product can be better. Again, I'm happy to accommodate.

Well I had one such client hire me to do a book cover. They suggested I use AI to help because the cover included multiple human figures, and without AI I would have to get some very specific photo references which would cost a lot of time and money. The whole image was completely created by myself, a product of my own mind, but there were some AI elements remaining in the final image.

The client was very happy with the end result. The author of the book was especially excited. They shared it with their audience and they got a ton of positive feedback. No negative feedback at all. Just another job well done then, right?

Well, no. Apparently another artist who also does book covers decided to run it through AIorNot and it came back saying it was likely AI generated. Well, of course it did. If you so much as look at AI while creating an image, AIorNot will say that the whole thing was made by AI.

And often even if you don't.

It will say that my old abstract acrylic paintings are AI generated more often than not. That software is seriously flawed. But no matter, as in this case, I actually did use AI elements in the illustration, and my client was well aware of this. No big deal.

Well, no, it turns out that it *was* a big deal. This artist contacted the book's author who, apparently, had not been made aware that I would be using AI in my work flow on this piece. It turns out that this author is extremely anti-AI, not just for images, but in general. For him it is a moral issue, and anyone who uses AI is not fit to be employed.

My client, the publisher, explained to him that I made the image, but only used AI elements as part of the process, but the author wasn't having it. They refused not only to use the cover, but refused to allow me to paint a new cover without the AI elements in it. In fact they strongly pressured the publisher to cut off all ties with me. The publisher obviously wasn't going to do this, as they are very happy with the work I do. In fact they still paid me for the cover art, even though they can't use it now, because they loved the cover and I did the work they asked of me.

But still, the publisher had no choice but to pull the cover art.

The author put out a social media post about it, essentially accusing me of being dishonest. People are jumping on the bandwagon, calling me an art thief, telling him how morally superior he is, etc. It's a truly nauseating display. This is not a matter of creative differences to these people; it's about good vs. evil. And because I dared to try and stay relevant in a changing world, I apparently picked the side of evil. And there is no arguing with them about it being art theft. They have no idea how these generators work, and they don't actually want to know, or they wouldn't keep pushing that obvious falsehood.

I have reached the frightening conclusion that if AI generators don't put artists out of work, then they may very likely do it to themselves when the community implodes. The way I see it, you can either try to stay competitive, or you can choose to be a Luddite and fall behind, because AI image generators aren't going away. They simply aren't. And in a few years, only the zealots will remain, beating their drums in a small echo chamber where only other zealots will hear them, because everybody else will be over it and bored sick of the drama. In the meanwhile, they are only making it more difficult for artists to stay employed in this new world with AI generators, by punishing those who try to adapt!

Any artist who runs art through an AI image detector, which actually uses AI to operate, is committing extreme hypocrisy.

The irony is completely lost on them, that due to their panic about AI potentially putting artists out of work, they themselves are using AI to track down and punish artists by threatening their livelihood.

AI will put artists out of work, because artists are making it happen.

So now, my client is in a bit of a panic and adding a disclaimer that relevant covers are made with AI on all the Amazon links because, even though Amazon claims that no such disclaimer is needed in cases where AI is merely used as an assist, he is worried that people will complain about them, and they could lose their Amazon affiliate shop, which would be death to their company. So even the images that merely had a texture overlay somewhere on it now have to be labeled as being ENTIRELY GENERATED BY AI. Even though according to Amazon's own terms they were in full compliance already. And the issue there is that if an Amazon affiliate has too many products which are listed as made by AI, apparently (I'm not sure exactly) they get put in a different category or something. So even though Amazon claims that AI assistance and editing is fine in their rules, in actual practice it is not. You can't take that chance because of the witch hunt that is happening right now.

And I'm still perfectly happy to work with or without AI. I have done without it for many years. But my clients still want me to use it, because they also don't want to fall behind. So that puts me in a difficult position of feeling like I need to choose a side on an issue that I don't even think should be an issue in the first place.

There's been a lot of bad news regarding actually owning anything that was digitally acquired. From Funimation to Sony. A lot of stuff people bought just stopped existing.

And to me, this is a flawed thought process. Owning the physical device won't save it forever. In fact, most media does have a physical form. Companies typically keep a master copy of whatever is created and sold/broadcast. A lot of that content becomes essentially lost media but in reality, we're just looking for someone who is willing to digitize the only physical copy that exists for that item.

You're thinking "Oda, one copy is good. It's better than no copies, and all we want is to own a copy and we're willing to pay for it to and that will preserve it better in the end." And that's a convincing argument. But we need to talk about how things are preserved.

CDs are how most TV shows and video games are saved and copied and CDs can last anywhere between 20 to 100 years.

Did I say 20 to 100 years? I mean to say, 1 day to whenever you scratch it accidentally. Sun damage, dropping on the floor, having it sit on a surface and gather dust, hell, running the CD wears it out after awhile.

This is the same issue with books. Of course we need to keep books. Books are valuable and priceless, but if you aren't keeping your books maintained by rebinding it, touching up the faded ink, and keeping the book basically unmolested in a temp controlled container, it's going to rot on your shelf and become useless. Hell, forget about extremists burning your books. Bugs are going to eat it first.

Review on Final Project

The Final Project is now complete, so its review time yet again!

Let's start off with three key things that I learnt through this

Watch your laptop's performance

Make sure you use (high performance) proxies!

Make sure to save constantly and make several copies!!

Throughout the post production of the film the programs were too heavy on my laptop, causing frequent program crashes, black and blue screens of death. With one fatal one causing the opened files to corrupt, setting me back 2 weeks right at the deadline! So make sure you keep an eye on your processes!

As mentioned in the previous blog, I decided to create a film about "sight" or specifically, what you can't see but what the camera "hears". It honestly was a lot more challenging than I thought to materialise my ideas, then having to repeat it again due to the corruption. But it was a fun challenge indeed!

Reflection

There is definitely a lot of things that I learnt from the first project, but more so in this final one. From effects, timing and blend modes, to playing with opacity, rotoscoping techniques and audio adjustments. But likewise there were aspects that I didn't realize or needed to develop more:

First was that I didn't draw enough frames again on the 16mm film. Unlike digital where I can insert more frames, since the 16mm was recorded using a Steenbeck, it made it difficult to add more frames. I did add a few more here and there by digitally editing them in Photoshop, but it just didn’t feel the same.

Second was rotoscoping. After researching and realizing that rotoscoping on Premier or Hitfilm required using the line tool and how it wasn't as versatile as I thought, I quickly searched how to import the video into an animating software and rotoscope that way. Unfortunately this was a lot more difficult than I imagined as well. I tried programs like Blender and Pencil 2D. But Pencil 2D did not support video import, and Blender was a bit confusing to use, especially in the short time I had.

My version of Photoshop was also missing the Dynamic Link so it couldn't import videos either. So I converted all the parts that I would like into an image sequence and imported them into the timeline, manually editing each frame’s time duration as the default is 7 seconds and I wanted it to be at least 0.03 seconds. My limit was rotoscoping and animating 30 seconds each day before either the day is up, or my steam runs out. Thus losing those 2 weeks meant that I needed to redo something that took me a minimum of 5 days. It also meant that since I couldn’t directly link the video content to the animation, I needed to make time markers such as the following to know how much to rotoscope:

16 sec of walking before clunk sound, then 6 seconds more before music starts

7 sec of wind

People walking 10 seconds

Horse = 3 seconds

More walking 7seconds

Bell = water

Waves 20 seconds

Listening to music and slowly sitting down

I also had to make sure that I saved it in parts not only to avoid corruption again, but to decrease the file size. Nevertheless, I learnt a lot about rotoscoping, animation and how to do that in Photoshop! Hoping to do it more for fun and casual use.

Lastly, timing. I felt like my timing for a few parts were a bit off after export, but when editing, it seemed to be aligned with the audio. I’ve tried several times but to make the deadline, I had to be quick as it takes at least an hour for the 5 minute video to render and be exported. There were a total of 6 audio tracks and 5 video tracks to care, keep an eye out for and render. Even though I was using the frame to frame hotkeys (< and >) to make sure that I was getting it in the right place, occasionally due to the proxies and lag, what I thought was in the right place turned out not to be. It became a bit of a gamble whether I layered them in the right place and paced them correctly or not!

Panic and anxiety start to set in until she hears a meow from a cat and starts to follow it. Calming herself down, her imagination starts to go wild as she envisions all these strange and mystical objects that appear before her based on what she hears, developing a peculiar and fun world to explore in from this unknown newfound place.

By utilizing the two different techniques, I was able to separate the two different “worlds” and perspectives. With 16mm film and 3rd person perspective as the “real world”, and digital rotoscoping/ animation and 1st person as the girl’s imaginative world.

Noises aren’t always as they seem. Similar to how foley artists use an array of different and peculiar objects to make sounds, a lot of the noises I got were used to inspire other objects. Such as the clunking of the light rails sounding a lot like chickens clucking or a boat in rough seas with its bell. The visual of the wind to represent zoning out to all the noise just like how everyone does, to buses that sound like whales as they pass by, and women running in heels to the footsteps of horses. I was also lucky to be recording when there was a band nearby playing, “giving” me the background music I needed otherwise I would’ve been stumped as to what to use. There were a few times where the transitions were a bit rough such as the movement to look at a bench and sit down, but it was a great experience. There are a few easter eggs here and there so I hope you can find them and that they were able to be expressed nicely!

I also learnt a lot about blind people and how they get by through a Youtube channel by Lucy Edwards. Learning and taking inspiration, the girl in my film travels and is notified a lot by morse code vibrations through her phone. The three messages that occur are:

I was nervous at the beginning of rotoscope animations as I thought that each frame needed to have very smooth transitions, making it a very daunting task. Since they were done in Photoshop, if I would like to change that, I would have to go into Photoshop, hide that group, exporting as an image sequence, import it back into Hitfilm and then realign it back to its position.
