Ok so the first thing you need to know about T'Sik is her head gets wider every time i draw her

The second thing you need to know about her is she is having the least severe vulcan identity crisis. My main idea for her character was someone who, while being perfectly able to fit into their society's ideals of what they should be, just cannot feel comfortable in it. She's always felt more at ease interacting with aliens or Vulcans who didn't go through with the Kolinahr, in spite of her being successful in that aspect. She's great at medicinal science. She's also pretty good at being a wife (so her parents say)! But once she's expected to 'finish' her duty as a woman in Vulcan society and become a mother, she kind of just runs off and joins Starfleet.

In that sense, she connects with a freshly-graduated (she assumes) human (she assumes) ensign, who was also a rebel in the sense he was more Curzon than Ezri Dax, a chaotic rogue with ambiguous feelings towards the society he was raised in. They serve together on their first ship for a while before T'Sik is promoted and transferred from ship to ship. She feels appreciated for a while, but she eventually has to admit that the feeling fades.

The people she's always gotten along with more simply aren't the people she really wants praise from. She longs for the people she grew up alongside, the people she was raised by.

It doesn't matter, so she ignores the feeling. She keeps being distracted at work. She gets sloppier. The people grow more distant in her mind. Years pass. Decades pass. She's not exceptional anymore, she's just decent.

She gets transferred to the ship where everyone who's just decent goes: the USS Hawking, patrolling the middle of nowhere.

The people are strange, but familiar. Too familiar — a friendly face greets her, and suddenly she's freshly 40 again. Ensign Morris treats her just the same as back then. It's strange. She doesn't quite know what to do with herself. More time passes.

Her new captain, a cardassian man named Karal, brings new people aboard, one of which is a young ferengi woman named Nul. Unfortunately for T'Sik, she's seen the story of a young woman running away from home into the arms of Starfleet before.

...Which starts us off with the (imaginary) S1, where T'Sik has to navigate a new Captain and a new apprentice who reminds her a bit too much of herself (she will be a bit cold to her at first). And maybe also properly re-befriend her former weird mysterious rebel colleague who never got promoted too.

as for morris & t'sik they're kinda weird sarcastic sorta-friends they hook up at one point and it sucks really bad. t'sik's ex husband felt a disturbance in the force (wrong franchise) the day it happened and stuff. Idk i haven't thought about him at All. that's like a s4 episode to me

& also i Forgot to adjust uniforms for time period in the first doodle but my in canon explanation for the voyager era ones (this whole thing would be a bit after the dominion war) is that the ship just never got replicator patterns for the new uniforms. Yup

Thoughts on Cad Bane in Tales of the Underworld

I almost never post analyses of my fave fandom things! But I've been thinking about nothing but this show for a solid 24 hours, haha. Honestly, I've been pretty light on sharing my thoughts on the beloved blorbos previously because I don't often care for engaging in the hot take trading in Star Wars fandom... and I also know things tend to grow on me over time, even if something bothers me at first. I’m also in times when people like me worry for their lives and futures, so the me that shows up for Star Wars anymore honestly just wants to have a little fun with it and appreciate what these creative teams manage to do, especially today, when I get Cad Bane content so enchantingly rarely!

BUT, these episodes definitely had a big effect on me. So I've sat with them a little, let ‘em roll around in my head, and though there’s parts of the narrative I think I would have also liked to see… what was done with this story, I ultimately really enjoyed.

But let's dig in deeper, because it IS fun.

THE RELATIONSHIP

Alright, to get it outta the way, anything that involves showing a past relationship for a character seems to set off a bomb inside fan heads. And as a queer writer with an MLM Bane series, some folks have seemed to kind of want to feel me out on this one!

Honestly, the Bane and Arin relationship intrigued me, and I like her.

But first, before I dig into why, I have seen some folks uncomfortable with the idea of a character that's had a blank slate backstory past now being given a "love interest," so I'm going to speak to that first. What is presented here doesn’t change all that much about what we know of Bane as a character—this was a relationship that was definitely physical and involved SOME sort of emotional attachment, but that's about all that was said, and I don't see how it really threatens most interpretations of Bane. Yes, even and especially the queer ones. One can write Bane and/or Arin with any earth-equivalent sexuality, gender, or romantic preferences (or lack thereof) that you choose and these interpretations would still work within this canon information (if you even want to keep canon information in your works!) I've been looking at this relationship from the angles of queerplatonism, aromanticism, bisexuality, pansexuality, heterosexuality, gay with a confusing puberty, etc. etc. etc.. And that’s just if Arin is in fact a woman in the sense that many earth humans mean it.

There’s a lot of wide narrative holes for creatives to nest in here, and I'm really happy I can say that, because I'm already building a nest. And, besides all THAT, Bane’s a cowboy alien?? Like. I think we should all keep getting weird with it, because he SURELY would be up to things outside of our earthly human day-to-day perspective.

THOUGHTS ABOUT ARIN HERSELF

I really like her. I love the idea of this young person who was kind, who was trying to pull Cad back from the worst parts of his nature, who was wiser than he was about the possibilities of a future past the violence of their world. That is part of what my own OC Nuni was when I wrote him. And now in canon, there were at least two people—Arin and Niro—both trying to pull Cad back from his fixation on gold and blood, and I like that theme!

Was I curious how Cad and Arin came together…? Yeah. Of COURSE. But I know this was limited time we had, and decisions were made about how to convey the most telling details in shorthand and the story in broad brushstrokes—so here, I settle for the subtle body language, which honestly was very deliberately rendered. It’s clear Cad is attached on some level to Arin; the way he works easily alongside her and doesn’t leave her behind when the going gets tough isn't without meaning at all. For him, it seems as close a relationship as he's able to have. But a lot of their interaction regardless comes across as a very Cad way of handling someone, especially while younger, rasher, his anger hotter. He doesn’t confide in her, he snips, he barely listens. He hardly looks at her or even touches her, though her own gaze is often on him, analyzing, hoping, bidding for him to let go of what doesn’t matter. But he doesn’t consider her needs for a single second as more important than him coming out on top. And this… this was a relationship I’ve seen before in life, in which one side is too focused on what they’re chasing to properly, truly notice the other person, even if some facet of having the other person around comforts them. I couldn't help but wonder if Arin was indeed startled by how easily Cad hugged Niro, when Cad just doesn’t seem to be like that with anyone else that we see, not even her. So yes, his and Arin’s relationship was strange, one-sided, with so much unspoken… but it was a lot we can glean from very little.

I wish in some ways that Arin had still been alive in the final episode, but I am sensing perhaps why it was decided that she wouldn’t be. There’s a narrative hole here I’m going to have to speculate inside, but—when Bane returns an unspecified amount of time after he was arrested, he’s grown up a fair amount. Got new scars. He has crew coming to meet him as if they want to give loyalty, when he didn't exactly come across as Lazlo's second in command previously. And now, the community council seems like they’re wetting their pants about him showing up, and they ALL know and seem to fear his name, whereas when he was arrested, they absolutely didn’t.

Frankly, the writing seems to imply that there was some serious stuff that happened in the interim between when they arrested him and he made his way back to his old stomping grounds. I don't know if it was a situation in which Bane still managed to make trouble from inside his cell, pulling strings, or if there were periods in which he was free, then arrested again.

But either way, Arin was left behind for a long while, just like Niro was once. Enough for Cad to get up to his own mischief, forge at least some part of his intimidating legacy. But again, he’s been so sucked into his own workings that the world he left behind moved on without him. I don't think he ever says that he was coming back for Arin when he does arrive; that’s a guess everyone ELSE is throwing around. He’s seemingly just there to settle accounts in general, and the mention of Arin having married Niro just seems to stick him in the pride. Either way, he's come back far too late to have done anything about it. They've both long moved on, and he wrote her off as a traitor long ago. Arin's had a life alongside a kinder person, and now is gone, and perhaps Cad could have tried to learn anything at all about what had happened before now, found a way for someone to bring him intel, wrote a letter, etc. But he didn’t.

He only returns to old places in this story when it’s time for revenge.

I think it fits his character fairly well, so unwilling to deal with these emotional difficulties that any question of Arin he still held in his heart was answered by a life fully lived without him, one he stayed ignorant of until it came back to needle his ego. The fact that Arin is dead isn't the point. It was that he didn't know she was dead, years gone. If that isn't a character statement, I don't know what is.

So yes, despite the missing parts, Arin is a character I like. I see some folks mentioning the concept of her being “fridged,” but I personally don’t think that entirely fits. Fridging is… specific. She wasn't there in the story only to die of violent or sad means, all to inspire the protagonist into having character development. Conversely, Arin doesn’t pass the Bechdel test, no, and I wish she did! Regardless, the tragedy is that Arin DOES have agency and uses it to live, not die—and her sacrifice doesn't inspire or change Cad, because he was hurtling down into the dark all on his own. She chose to end the violence, defy Cad and steal his gun because she’s kinder and wiser than he is, and knows how to let go and move on. She only died after having lived a life she chose, even an offscreen one, Cad’s choices be damned. I can’t call it a fridging. I do still wish she had more time to tell us more about who she was, but I suppose fic is here, and I’m just going to have to write something about it sometime.

CAD BANE’S SON

I yelled when he appeared. Jfc what a cute kid. This story also told us Cad was a cute kid too. And the narrative spares neither of them. :(

I’m going to get it out of the way: the only thing, literally the only thing, I am having difficulty accepting about this story is the kid’s name. Isaac. What? What?? EXCUSE ME. IS THE BOOK OF GENESIS IN STAR WARS?? I’m going to need ten linguistics and history enthusiasts in my replies immediately so we can figure out what the hell happened culturally with the Duros and Judaism in a galaxy far far away.

BUT I DIGRESS. This kid Isaac looked into my soul with those big eyes and I opened a door in my heart for him and now I’m in hell, so whatever I guess.

I AM IN HELL AHHHHH.

But. The moment when Cad looks in that kid’s eyes and knows EXACTLY who the father is was almost startling. Like, he even reaches out for a second. Just a split second. It’s this razor-sharp shard surprise-cutting him inside his moment where he thought he was just wrapping up all the loose ends. All that gloating to Niro about “I’ll take care of him like you did Arin” had so little real caring behind it that I doubt it was any kind of real promise.

But it’s then that Cad sees. For one of the few times in this story, Cad looks into someone else’s eyes outside of himself, and he properly sees them.

And he reaches out.

But that’s shut down fast. The interfering mayor clearly knows who Isaac comes from, just like Cad knows now. And neither of them say anything about it, but their understanding is clear, and Cad walks away, quietly agreeing, perhaps, that it’s the right move to do so. What he’s become can’t help this kid in any meaningful way. He’s just made another abandoned orphan like he was, and who knows what kind of life is in store for that child now?

Obviously, later in canon, Cad will have a go at helping another kid’s journey, mentoring Boba Fett. I wonder if, perhaps, he did it to try and prove to himself he could, gnawing inwardly over what happened on this day with the son he’ll now never know.

After all, he's not very good at letting things go.

THE STORY IN GENERAL

I’m kind of working backwards with my thoughts, from this very specific musing regarding the important relationships to the larger story... I haven't even gotten into Niro! Did you see that moment where Cad was the one to hug him, and he couldn't quite manage to do it back? When the last time they saw each other, he was the one being abandoned? How he faced Cad in person, and so is NEVER the person running away to save himself? I am gently patting this Duros' face. Excellent. But. I am going to have to wrap this up eventually and save any other thoughts for later.

At the end of the day, there was a lot inside this short little visit into Bane’s life that really delighted me. The scores of different Duros characters (shoutout to the guy in that giant hat, hahaha. LOVE A DUROS IN A GIANT HAT <3) The love given to the modeling, texturing, and overall craft of this production... all my love to the Star Wars animation team. The small look at the culture in the area Bane lived in as a child. The way he discourages his friend from buying a little toy their hearts clearly want, in favor of that which is practical. That moment when child Bane gets a taste of what money can do, hungry, licking the box clean that held his first real, good meal in a long time. The moment when Niro tries to get him to walk away from Lazlo’s scheme, and he immediately spins around and agrees it’s not worth it unless they’re paid twice as much—the budding negotiator!

Being fast, agile, sliding over the hood of a car as he runs from the cops.

Choosing to save himself, then the instant regret, lack of surety, fear—drowned in his first handful of gold.

The visual of him as an adult seeing his childhood self in the glass before shooting that thought right through the heart… the foreshadowing. Goddamn.

Like, I do have mixed feelings on some level. It was too big a story in too small a space. The first episode was plain excellent, but the latter two suffered from the broad brushstrokes preventing us from being able to get to know some of the new faces introduced, and raised a lot of questions about other things—truly, we never get to see what Lazlo comes to mean to young Colby, why he inspired a boy to become so like him. We never see when Colby decides to leave behind his old name and why. We never see where Todo comes from, or why Cad chose Arin to spend his time with. It also doesn’t show the why’s and how’s that made Cad Bane the Legend exceptional at what he is.

But it did give us tantalizing tidbits, the smallest pieces of the before-times we can explore more on our own. It showcased that Cad Bane's greatest strength as a bounty hunter, why he's so feared, is the precise fatal flaw that made his life the way it is: the fact that once he has the scent of his goals, he’ll never let go, not ever—he'll chase them from one end of the galaxy to the other to settle accounts, inexorable, deadly.

And it hasn't brought him happiness.

Wanted to post these separate from my Art Fight post because I spent too long on these references (really just Fallstreak's tbh) to keep them hidden away on the AF site. Also cause I love these guys and I haven't really talked about them much on here.

So for anyone who was curious about the previous art I posted of these OCs, have some actual information about them!

Nell

Full name Abnell Roache (will also accept 'Nella', but loathes being called 'Nelly'). A health and safety inspector for an interstellar cargo company, Nell becomes stranded on an ocean planet when the ship she's auditing- the ACS Endurance- experiences a catastrophic engine failure and tears itself in two.

Adrift on an endless alien sea with no guarantee of rescue and little emergency food, she has to survive with the help of Bas: an (illegal) AI inhabiting the chassis of her life pod's survival assistant. With her only goals being survival and finding any other survivors, she's unprepared to find herself making humanity's first contact with another sapient species; an alien biologist named Fallstreak who has also found himself trapped on the planet. 

She's thrilled to learn about Fallstreak and his people, as well as teach him as much as she can about humanity, and if she has an immediate, massively obvious crush on the tall faceless alien? Well, the only other person there to complain is Bas. Which he does. A lot.

Bas (Pronounced 'Baz')

An illegal AI inhabiting the chassis of a life pod survival assistant (though to clarify, in this universe all true AI are illegal because they require a human brain scan to be made and that's a legal rights nightmare). After years of only knowing his 'father', Richter (the engineer aboard the Endurance who purchased and programmed him), he boots up to find his home destroyed, his father dead, and himself in the company of a total stranger; Nell. 

He has a lot to deal with: keeping Nell alive, figuring out how to interact with someone other than Richter while also mourning his death, and acting as a middle-man/interpreter between Nell (who he has rapidly developed what seem to be romantic feelings towards) and Fallstreak (an alien biologist who's captured Nell's interest without even knowing what he has). 

And to top it all off? He has a text-to-speech Australian accent.

Fallstreak

An alien biologist with a bio-mechanical body, named after the cloud formation (look up 'Fallstreak holes', they're neat!) that most closely resembled an event that occurred on the day of his birth.

Extremely curious and wants to learn everything about his two new companions, as well as share his knowledge with them. Verbal language is all but entirely unused by his species, however, so the language barrier between Fallstreak and Nell+Bas is a large one. Thanks to Bas' assistance, he's able to understand spoken communication fairly well, and speaks (in very broken sentence structure) by vibrating the membranes in his gill openings, resulting in a voice that sounds somewhat like early English vocaloids; understandable but clearly not a natural voice.

Living a fairly solitary life isn't uncommon for his species, and he hasn't had the opportunity to experience romantic interest before, so when he meets Nell and begins to fall for her, he's more than a little confused (oblivious) about what his emotions are doing. Unfortunately draws some jealous ire from Bas as a result, but is pretty oblivious to the AI's attempted rivalry.

All three of these guys are from a WIP comic called The Rive that I hope to finish some day. I have most of the story figured out, and quite a bit of it scripted and ready to go, I just need to actually draw the damn thing.

Okay, since I have so much about the TV twink, I decided to lore dump about Viveo and Rayman’s relationship. More importantly…

In College!!

Yes. And they were roommates

Me lore dumping under cut. I know not everyone cares for my OCs or ideas lol:

So, the story is that when Rayman first migrated into America, he was struggling to settle down. People didn’t like him and never really gave him the chance for… anything really.

Then, he heard about this one college (I don’t have a name for it atm), but it was very big on being “accepting to both humans and hybrids”. This was super rare for a college in what? 1950s?? 60s???

Whatever, it was a chance for Rayman.

Sadly, college was nothing like the advertisements, cause when he arrived, he was very much bullied into the ground. Turns out the college may be accepting but the students were not.

However, he wasn’t alone.

This leads into Viveo.

Viveo was harassed, yes, but not as much as Rayman. He is technically an “alien”, but he’s “human” enough to spare a beating.

Also, he’s buff

I do make jokes about Viveo being a twink, and he is. But he has jumpscare muscles. Like, when he flexes you can tell he works out.

(This is a reference to him being based off a JD coach and that burns calories and stuff idk it makes me feel buff </3)

The two met when Rayman was getting bullied. He would’ve fought back, but when last time he did he got in really big trouble because he broke someone's nose and the school sided with the bullies cause like, this is still the 1950s.

Viveo stepped in and scared them away with his tall frame and jacked body. Maybe a bit of psychological manipulation to get the point across.

(I may draw a comic about this, depends on how much y’all like them lol)

That’s how they officially met. Viveo may have heard of Rayman through rumors and drama (cause he’s a sucker for that), and Rayman heard of Viveo through reputation.

It turns out that they shared the same room! They were roommates yay 👏

They both pursued entertainment, so they shared a lot of the same classes which only made their bond stronger.

When Rayman is not trying to get a gig or in class, he takes a job at the college as a desk assistant and soon a CA (the people who patrol the dorms and tell people to shut up). Although it was only late at night, it was the only thing hiring.

Rayman doesn’t really know what Viveo does when he’s not partying, so he lets him stick around until he’s free again.

Although Viveo technically shouldn’t be there when he's on the job, let alone talking to him, it’s the only way people would actually go up and ask Rayman for assistance (even if they only talk to Viveo)

Also, it gives Viv something to do

Rayman doesn’t want to get fired, so when a boss or something comes along, Viveo acts like he’s there for help. Gotta use that acting class for something

As you know, Viveo is popular among the campus, and that popularity comes parties.

He’s a riot at these things. He’s fun, entertaining, and can sing really really good

Viveo is invited to all the dorm parties, but Rayman is not

Since Rayman is a CA, he technically works for the college and is able to rat people out

And partying is forbidden at this one

Even if Rayman is invited, he’s seen as a “stick-in-the-mud”. He tries his hardest to be “fun”, but he’s a bit too "good" to do anything crazy (unless Viveo nudges him too)

So, when Ray works, Viv parties.

(I know it’s a modern phone. If they had flying cars and fully interactive holograms in 1992, I’m sure this is likely)

Viveo is still lowkey selfish, but if he likes you, he’s a bit more lenient.

Being best friends and dormmates with basically one of the security guards, it gives Viveo a lot of power if you think about it

When he gets bored or tired of a party, he hits up Rayman to shut it down so he can leave with a "bang"

Is it unnecessary? Yes. Is it fun to see everyone’s night get ruined because you thought it was boring? A little.

It’s a benefit for them both, though

Rayman gets praised by his boss and coworkers (mostly his bosses), while Viveo gets to party with little to no consequences

Power couple at it finest

When Eden eventually becomes sort of a big name, Rayman takes Viveo with him to his job application as moral support. Viveo stands in the back supporting him, spicing his performance with sound effects, and helping him remember his lines if he slips up (Perks of a TV face)

Rayman does get the job, and he’s super pumped to tell Viv about it (Keep in mind that this is like, senior year of college). Viveo is obviously happy for him, but also a tad bit jealous.

Y’know, until Rayman drags him along.

In Rayman’s mind, he’s nothing without Viveo and vice versa. It’s a little different for Viveo, but that’s not important.

At the end of the day, Rayman gets himself a place as “Eden’s mascot”, and Viveo’s given a place of “Eden’s voice” per Rayman's request. Two aliens against the world.

That’s enough of me yapping, I don’t know who even bothered to read this far. If you did, thank you. You either really like Viveo, or have nothing better to do.

I might do more lore-dumping. This was fun. But it depends if people want to sit down and listen

Hey, everyone! Sorry for being kinda dead lately. I went on vacation to Chicago, so there was pretty much no time to make any posts or anything like that. But I’m back with a…

New romantic F/O drop (OC edition)!

I’m not gonna stall any further…say hello (once again) to Genevieve!

Yep, she has a name now, and a very, very pretty one at that! I’ve been thinking WAY too much about this lovely alien dino lately, as she just brings me so much love and joy! In fact, I’m tempted to make her a primary F/O, I just love her THAT much!!

I want to briefly tell y’all about her story. Born as Jenav’iyah, she hails from the planet N’shav’riya. Her species is called Va’rethi, a race of sapient dragon-dinosaurs known for their fierce intelligence, empathy, and biological adaptability. Because of their planet’s higher gravity, they evolved to be dense-boned, muscular, and mostly quadrupedal. However, they have also adapted to standing and walking on two legs for more delicate tasks, aided by opposable thumbs on their front legs.

Jenav’iyah was a bit of an outlier in her species. She was bipedal for longer times than most and had a desire to explore another place, particularly Earth. And after a devastating world war that left Earth broken but able to heal, she saw the perfect opportunity: a position in her species’ Cultural Liaison Corps, aimed to study human behavior, coordinate peace, and rebuild the planet.

She was assigned to a relatively remote place on a large hill, overlooking a marvelous city below. And this is when she met me. I had survived horrible traumatic events during the war, and so I retired to a place to finally rest my soul. But little did I know that soon, I would be in the company of a beautiful alien dino. We eventually got married, she took up the name Genevieve, and we lived happily ever after.

I won’t spoil the details this soon, but I will share the biggest quirk of our relationship. Whenever she stands and walks on two legs…I melt. Blush. Get completely flustered. I cannot explain why, but I LOVE it when she does it. Time after time, she has learned to “weaponize” this to her advantage, surprising me in unique ways every time. Her bipedal stance is enough to get me out of a bad mood…even if it means my face gets completely red.

There are much more details to go over with the two of us. But in summary…

I love, love, LOVE her to death. I would literally do anything for my sweet wife. Aaaaaaaaaaaaa I’m melting already 💖💖💖💖

After looking at Echi's speech patterns your recent fic, as well as the post about ADVENT hybrids having different alien accents, I've been wondering - what are your thoughts on different aliens' speech patterns and accents? Something distinctive about how their species communicate, like the way they form sentences, or prolong certain letters, for example?

I take it Echi is someone else's OC, correct?

Onwards to my thoughts...

I will also say I sometimes forget to portray that in some fics or I'm running off "the translator is making corrections" or "this fic has been translated into something easier to understand." And then I don't want to dig myself down the rabbit hole of conlang again and the grammar structure...

When the Elders aren't stripping the identities of their slave races and changing it to something "better", I can see them as varied as human accents and snytax with cultural influences, but I haven't really put any specific thoughts for each species minus I want to avoid the stereotypical "reptiles, especially snakes, hiss their words" with the Vipers. Some do it. Some don't.

But I've had thoughts that the speech patterns extends over to body movements/gestures, pheromones, etc. E.g. they see colors humans can't see, hear frequencies humans can't hear, smell pheromones humans can't smell, etc. etc. And then psionics, forget for certain species all communication is done that way.

Something I currently have the Mutons in the Wandering Souls fic is they are very physical with how they speak and show their emotions. And with most of them being young/perhaps clones, they very much forget that everyone else is not as strong or as tough as them. Yerra avoids this because she's been around for a long time and interacted with a lot of species so she can tailor her speech and actions to fit others.

And thinking of them, I see a lot of their language would also be based on grunts, roars, and the like. And then their non-modified mouths (Fight me on the Muton redesign in Chimera Squad I hate it) would lead to human words(and other alien words) sound odd. Using an example from the Predator franchise, how the Yautja says "ooman" for human. Probably that also causes them to draw out certain syllables or stress an accent upon them.

I also can see the Muton language(well at least one) being straight to the point and very blunt(may sound moronic to some), lacking subtlety. They stress the beginnings and ends of words to get across important ideas. A lot of idioms/metaphors deal with strong wills/controlling aggression, strength, combat, weapons, etc. And then this varies from clan to clan, from dialect to dialect.

Sometimes they may try to "soften" their speech, but if you pissed them off(which you may need to run) it's anvil and hammer.

I don't have much to theorize with Floaters/Archons, but will say they have similarities to Mutons since they share some DNA(unless that's been retconned with Chimera Squad.)

And then all the modifications they've suffered and that they were in pain 24/7 because of the Elders makes it harder to judge if guttural sounds and roars would be naturally apart of their speech.

Vipers' natural tongue probably does have a lot of hissing where there are subtle differences most won't pick up. Lots of  hard consonants and sibilants, and some that outright sound like they are clearing their throats. But somehow it's also fluid and rich in tones.

And maybe some pheromones thinking of the Viper King's effects on loyal Vipers, but that could also be whatever Vahlen did really amplified that.

So a little hiss here and there slips through when speaking to other species. Since the Elders liked them a lot, they probably have the most varied/unaltered speech patterns depending on which cultures are with the Elders occupying Earth.

But they(if it's not just the double agents) seem to be able to be flexible with learning other languages, so their patterns probably have plucked something here and there from each species they've encountered with the Elders.

Sectoids, poor things, their speech is more mutable since their psionics seem to have made be able to feel the imprints of those around them. And by all means, being a slave race twice over(taking from the Bureau) for so long they've probably lost everything of what their original patterns were. Probably some chittering still permeates their current tongue, especially for those that haven't been more refined/had gene therapy to give them more human-like mouths.

A lot of communication for them is through psionics anyway with the chittering accompanying it. Straight thoughts and emotion with no words and body gestures to muddy it.

Elders... same-ish with how the psionic communication works with the Sectoids.

Their speech tends to be naturally fluid, a little echoing hiss here and there, and sometimes overly flowery, especially if they're being "nice". Still stays fluid when given commands in a neutral tone, but can quickly become harsh and very guttural when things are not going their way. You'll hear a torrent, like a rushing wind followed by many voices, with important words being stressed and sometimes dragged out by the other voices. Example for the many voices - The Many from System Shock 2.

Hunter probably hears the latter more than the formers nearly all the time when he's not at those important meetings in the chamber with his siblings.

Hybrids, we know how that sounds in-game and I imagine the syntax is an "easy switch" when they have to communicate with the other slave races due to the Psionic Network. Well maybe not when dealing with non-ADVENT city humans. Oh goodness, that's another can of worms there.

However, once freed they still have a bit of an alien grammar structure, so some sayings/metaphors/etc. come off odd to humans.

Those who've been indoctrinated and in service longer have it the worst. It'll take them years to get out of it compared to the younger members or those who didn't go through the indoctrination.

This is a sequel to my original post about Sekai here. Also gives me an excuse to drop more character lore.

Yes; "Ishida Sekai/Sekai Ishida" is a pun on "Isekai". I thought it was clever and grew attached.

Young adult. Feels like he missed out on a "typical" child/teenage-hood.

Identifies as genderfluid/non-binary. He/Whatever.

Was born with Spinal Bifida - Myelomeningocele type. Required a crap-ton of surgeries as an infant just to be able to move. Hydrocephalus as an newborn led to mild Cerebral Palsy (had to get a shunt put in to drain out excess CSF). As an adult he experiences; muscle weakness, partial paralysis of his facial muscles and legs, bowel and urinary issues (TMI), poor eyesight (legally blind), latex allergy, insomnia, anxiety, and neuro-divergency.

Walks mainly with crutches and leg braces. Uses wheelchair for long journeys.

Birth parent legally abandoned him - Sekai suspects it was financially motivated. Was put into Catholic orphanage where he spent most of his life. Was able to graduate from high school, albeit with great difficulty and numerous supports. At the start of his story, he's attending career training.

Amateur metalhead. Orginally got into it as a rebellion against his religious caretakers, ended up finding acceptance in punk metal community. Is wearing a Rob Zombie t-shirt under his hoodie.

Main social interactions pre-story are between fellow career trainees, members of his church (still attends to say hi), and people he befriended online.

Has experienced different levels of ableism throughout his life, mainly from strangers, but most harshly from a caretaker at the orphanage when he was a young child. This left Sekai with an extreme fear and paranoia of being targeted for his disability.

Has a reactionary temper, and has gotten himself into trouble for his aggressive behaviour. Kind of person to loudly announce if someone is blocking the sidewalk or taking up space on the train. He will not be ignored.

Favourite food is curry rice and pumpkin croquettes. Fave drink is anything peach flavoured. Most of his meals are from late-night convenience stores, vending machines, and cafeterias.

Story kicks off when Sekai falls (pushed?) off a train platform into the path of a bullet train. As he fell, the chaotic event opened a portal to Untrid - a high-fantasy realm that's been experiencing increased instances of portal malfunctions.

Sekai sees a lot of weird stuff as he falls through the portal. Land shifting and rising, seas parting and drying, the moon cycle of an alien sky, people in other times and places also falling, etc... probably not important.

As his fall through reality comes to a screeching halt; Sekai is met by a soft, welcoming face. This is the God of Gifts of this realm, and its duty is to grant boons and "starting bonuses" to the new souls of the world. Normally this means *newborns*, but the cheerful axolotl-shaped God figures *newcomers to the realm* fit the bill too.

The God of Gifts, joyfully: "Grown souls tend to ask me for complicated things. Babies rarely ask for anything more than warmth or food or the inherent ability to wield fire. If you have any requests, I will do my best to meet it." :) Sekai, existentially terrified/angry: "Give me back my crutches, you jerk!" The God of Gifts: "OK!" :D (*Sekai's crutches boomerang back to him from the void, he quickly reorients himself*) The God of Gifts: "Good luck out there!" :D Sekai, more lucid: "Wait, what?" (*Sekai suddenly slams onto a train track glitched into the landscape of a dense grass landscape. In the distance he sees the pinpricks of civilisation.*) Sekai, realsing: "Wait - did that fucker mean he could have given me anything!?"

Sekai is PISSED.

At first he tries to reason with himself that he's experienced a "glitch in the matrix", and that he's just in a rural area along his train route. He starts following the tracks towards the village in the distance.

Bad Idea! Bad idea! Locals take one look at him and argue in a language he can't recognise. A few get aggressive and try manhandling him. Sekai realises that the village is distinctly not rural Japan, and not exactly in the current millennium.

Running into the forest to avoid a potential hate crime; Sekai is soon tired, thirsty, freaking out, body hurting, and his whole concept of reality is breaking down. That's when he meets Wormwood - a demon who only seems to be visible in reflections and shadows.

Wormwood: "You seem lost, flatfoot. Mind if I-" Sekai, fed up: "I don't even f*cking care anymore! If you want to possess my body or something, just hop in! I really need someone to take the wheel right now!" Wormwood, surprised: "Damn, alright. I didn't even need to ask!" (*The demon "hops" into Sekai's body.... and very little seems to happen*) Wormwood, as an inner voice: "This is odd. Your limbs are stiff and I cannot seem to feel certain parts of your body. Are you not a man crippled by misfortune or illness?" Sekai, still able to move body: "Nah. I was born like this." Wormwood: "Hmm, this isn't ideal. I will exit your body and find a more mobile host." Sekai, offended: "Hey, f*ck you, man!" >:( Wormwood: "It is not a criticism of your form, but of your ability to aid me in my goals. I bid that you'll find another entity to meet your needs. Adieu!" (*a moment passes and no change seems to occur*) Wormwood, confused: "Why can't I leave?" Sekai: "Depends, where you at in there?" Wormwood: "I possess others through their brains and nervous system." Sekai: (*cackling!*) Wormwood, getting nervous: "Please explain!" Sekai: "Dude! Part of my brain is messed up from birth stuff. I think you're in the not-working department!" XD Wormwood: "What!? I have never heard of such a thing! If you'll bring me to an exorcist post-haste, we'll shall rectify this!" Sekai: "Hmm... maybe I won't." Wormwood: "What." Sekai, devious: "I might be new to this world, but I have an inkling that keeping a demon trapped in here might give me an advantage!" >:3 Wormwood: "You son of a cow." Sekai: "Hey! You're the one who agreed to help me out! You should have asked for more details before you shook on it!" Wormwood, flustered: "You sir, are worse than a demon!"

So yeah, now our isekai'd homie got a demon stuck in his brain, crutches that he never seems to lose (thanks, GOG!), and he's stuck in a fantasy realm that seems to have a history of people falling out of the sky.

Side effects of being possessed by a strange woodland demon include; spontaneous antler growth, weak ghostly limbs and/or tentacles made from shadows emerging from body, a constant inner voice (of said demon), being able to understand the local language (as the demon hears it), and taking occasional holy damage when in the proximity of Paladins. But hey! Free demon Alexa!

Sekai eventually runs into another "Off-Worlder" aka "Flatfoot" (as people from other dimensions appear to have flatter feet), and thats when the story really begins...

I'd like some help with ideas for a comic I want to make.

This is the first Tumblr post I've ever made, so hopefully I'm doing this right, sorry it's so long, I don't know if anyone will even see this post, but there's a comic I want to make with some of my OCs and I'm pretty good at coming up with roughly how I want the story to go, like how it starts and ends, but not so good with coming up with what happens in between. Like filler and stuff.

The basic plot:

Two 14yo boys (best friends) are at a summer camp and while exploring the woods they find a crashed spaceship with an alien inside, adventures ensue with the alien for the rest of the summer camp. At the end of the camp, a spaceship -following the alien's distress signal- brings the alien back home.

Random info:

The two 14yo boys names are Timothy and Chris. Chris is kinda nerdy while Timothy is more adventurous.

The alien's name is D'mitri. He is an adult.

There is also a turtle named Pete, but he's not really important to the story.

The camp is not boys-only.

D'mitri does speak a different language, so miscommunication might be an idea if his translator doesn't work quite right.

D'mitri also has some unique characteristics -he is an alien after all- and I will get to those characteristics later.

I don't really want romance to be a major plot point, Timothy and Chris might get together at the end of the story though.

I am a fan of cryptids and stuff, but I don't want the story to be super focused on stuff like that, it's supposed to be more "an alien has come to earth and now two teens have to deal with it" / "an alien has crash landed on earth and now has to deal with two teens". There can be a little bit of spooky stuff, but I don't want it to be the main plot.

My main plot problem is how D'mitri interacts with the camp since he's not really supposed to be revealing himself to humans. He couldn't hide as a camper since he's an adult, and the counsellors would probably notice that he's not one of them.

D'mitri basically got adopted by Timothy and Chris despite the fact that he's older than them.

D'mitri knows very little about Earth, so that's an idea or two.

I have never been to a summer camp so I have no idea what goes on there. Please give me info.

Chris is totally geeking out about the fact that there is an actual alien at his camp.

One idea I have is a camper being suspicious as to why Timothy and Chris are acting so weird. Kinda like Wes from Danny Phantom.

Alien info:

I had way too much fun coming up with ideas about what exactly D'mitri is, stuff about his planet, the language, and more, so this might be a lot.

D'mitri is what I call a Luranian. They're aliens from the planet Luran.

Aliens from that planet can also be called Lurans.

Luran is a largely aquatic planet with rainforest-like biomes covering the land. Aka, it's wet and damp.

Luranians are mostly inspired by amphibians/reptiles, so they have a few characteristics of stuff like that. Such as, larger lungs to hold more air and skin that can breathe air through water (like frogs) because they're underwater alot, larger feet (kinda like flippers) so they can swim faster, a little bit of webbing between appendages, they're also a bit bigger than humans, and most obvious, chameleon-like skin. Basically, they can change the color of their skin and hair to blend in with the enviroment. Their skin/hair is usually cool colors like dark blue and green, but they can change it to any color they like. So D'mitri is able to look human, except for the fact that he's slightly bigger. And his eyes can't change color to normal human eye colors, unlike his skin. Luranians' skin do unintentionally change color due to emotions and stuff sometimes.

I have been working on a written language for the Lurans, and the language sounds mostly like chirps, whistles, clicks, etc.

There is another type of alien in their universe called a Rolasian (from the planet Rolas), but they never show up in this story. If you are wondering, they are inspired off of bugs. I will make a post about them eventually.

What memory would your OC rather just forget?

Realizing that they were never as impartial as they thought, and everything that came after that. Their scale breaking, their self punishment, all of that.

But if they had the choice, they would forget all their life from the Nuclear Plant and just keep the few times they had positive interactions with their siblings. Doodle chains, notes left between swapping, the drawings they hid between the sarswapagus and the wall, stuff like that.

What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?

Man. If you already know about cherubs? probably how social they are. I don't think it's a nature thing nearly as much as a nurture thing. They, as a mediator cherub, know that their life is dependent on keeping their black and white counterparts from killing themself to kill the other, a very very real threat. They have an extremely fine tuned, almost hair trigger, ultra specialized sense of when a storm is brewing. An intuition about when they're going to swap back and see Calfuray's dollhouse covered in slime, or Calbhach's chemistry set covered in claw marks. It kept them alive in the Plant, but it's so specialized to their siblings that in a social area with other people they get so many false positives. And resolving conflicts was a universal life or death situation for them, so if they can't resolve a conflict, they start to spiral pretty fast. Their body goes into adrenaline mode.

What is your OC's fatal flaw? Are they aware of this flaw?

Their devotion to settling scores is going to get them killed one day. Especially with their siblings. Or at least it would have if the trolls didn't help them. They're always riding on the coattails of their siblings. They know they put themself in danger by trying to appease them, but they've yet to process that its not life or death anymore, that they can just let their siblings figure it out on their own.

When scared, does your OC fight, flee, freeze or fawn?

Fawn. Fawn so hard.

How far is your OC willing to go to get what they want?

What they want? Not far. For most of their story their own self is basically a footnote. "and also calixtus was here." What they feel they need? to the ends of the earth. They do really stupid shit to follow their siblings around.

How easily could your OC be convinced to do something that goes against their moral compass?

It would be extremely difficult, and they would need to feel like they've been punished enough after. They have to feel like they gave their pound of flesh, sometimes literally, depending on how much cherub eyes weigh.

What's one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them?

They got so much more scared. Originally they were way more calm about everything.

Would your OC ostensibly be able to get away with murder?

God absolutely not they would turn themself in.

Do you have a specific lyric or quote which you associate with your OC?

Not sure, but I feel like Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears, and Thumbnail - Louie Zong & BDG are very Calixtus songs.

Human au, though I just got the idea of a Rain World Iterator au and thats gonna be in my brain for a while... and a Gem (SU) au... theyd be like some kind of color change gem i think.

What is your OC's weapon of choice? Have they ever actually used it?

I said this before but i think its 1/4staffkind. aka rodkind i guess.

Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways?

My oc tore out three of their eyes out of guilt and continually sacrifices their mental stability for two people who really do not seem to care for them, and do not treat them well in the slightest.

If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?

I don't know... Hm. I'd try to be friendly, I think we would end up like most of my classmates where they know me and kinda like me but we arent really friends?

How does your OC want to be seen by other characters?

Impartial, or not at all. They're agoraphobic. They have alexithymia like 1340s Europe had the black death, their exterior is just an extention of their inner self though and they just... can't deal with the horror of being perceived, especially by their siblings. They can't perceive their Self, so they don't trust any of their gut instincts on what is right or wrong or correct or not, they just accept what people say about them, hold it as fact. Calfuray says they never treated her caringly, so that must be true.

Does your OC have a faceclaim? If so, who?

My oc's faceclaim is... YOU!!! under all that skin :0)

What is your OC's pain tolerance like?

Bad.

What is the worst thing you have put your OC through story-wise?

Yes.

They try to be as detached as their siblings are, but uh. Fail.

How does your OC behave when enraged?

This is the first time I have ever considered Calixtus experiencing this emotion...

I think Calixtus is scary when enraged.

I think they do. I think they get kind of clingy.

OCD, they don't handle it very well, I don't think they realize its a problem until Continua at the least. I feel like Lykoii would recognize it as something and they'd end up trying to become ok with unbalanced, unresolved, and nuanced situations. and also not flipping the lightswitch an exactly equal number of times in both directions. Stuff like that. (they cannot handle asymmetry in their own actions, experiences, and living situations, if they lose track of if they opened the last door with their left hand or their right hand they might have a panic attack)

What character alignment would you consider your OC to be?

Lawful Neutral.

What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express?

Guilt. also guilt. points at their blindfold...

What is an alternative life path your OC might have gone down? How different would their life be if they'd made those decisions?

They could have decided that the Pressure of Calfuray's inevitable predominion didn't need to be on the scales...

I fucking love cherubs. I love horrible nuanced sibling situations, I love lateral hermaphroditism in sexually dimorphic species, its such a fun design structure, I just love this creature.

13. If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?

God no. I don't think so. Not really. I'm very socially awkward and I dislike smooth talkers. He's beautiful, of course, and I can respect some charm, but hm. That's not the kind of person I'd ever approach on my own, only watch from a distance. I just feel awkward around out-of-my-league type social butterflies, and I really can't stand socially slippery people who always seem to be giving you the runaround. And he's often not a very pleasant person to be around long term. I don't think a weird little shut-in like me has anything to offer Balthazar either- I can't imagine him paying me much mind at all. I'm not especially interesting by his measures, I'm not useful, and I'm not an obstacle in any way I can imagine (unless we're looking at this as a re:Creators situation). But maybe I'm too much of a pessimist here.

I guess if you put us in a room together and made us interact we'd be able to have at least one decent conversation- some shared aesthetic or intellectual interest- but I think that's the best that could be managed. I guess that's a sort of getting along...?

23. What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express?

Well, the emotion that's hardest to process is easy. Genuine affection, real love... They're not things Balthazar squares with himself easily. He understands respecting other people, being amused by them, even enjoying their company. And those things can be a part of love. But having a sense of warmth around someone, wanting their company for its own sake, feeling safe in their presence, having some irrational pull of loyalty... these are alien things. He dislikes detecting them in himself. It makes him feel sick. Confused. Vulnerable. He's the type of person to try to explain those feelings away every way possible besides earnestly analyzing them. Maybe that's why it's easier for him to find affection for people he initially has friction with- it's a straightforward mask. At any rate, all the confusion and denial (which isn't even conscious sometimes!) makes him a bit clueless about his feelings for someone so used to playing with hearts. That's the power of a stubborn will.

As for hardest to express... I'd say that's sadness. It's not that he's not capable of expressing vulnerability, but it's easier when it's something that can be twisted and performed. Reclaimed by turning it into a tool, you know? It's easy to be scared, and it's easy to express fear. You just need to show it to the right person in the right way and you'll pull sympathy and protection. But there's something more personal about sadness, something less easy to direct into anything that's recognizably useful. And sadness doesn't have a target that can be focused on. It feels very helpless. It's an admission of defeat without the hope of turnaround. And that's not the kind of thing that he wants to admit to himself, let alone anyone else- he's the kind of person who drowns his grief in projects rather than show that he's been hurt by a loss. The catharsis of letting it out just isn't worth the exposure of the breakdown. Not even when he's breaking down privately.

That aside, he's a master of crocodile tears.

5. Anything you haven’t drawn yet but want to?

OOH hmm, quite a few things! First off, proper full CrowMoth art LOL 😭 Zatanna/Etrigan and Zatanna/Jason Blood.

There's a lot of DC characters who I need to draw in general who I WANT to draw. Like my takes on the other Amethyst characters or the Monster Society of Evil!! The rest of the Marvel Family and some proper Captain Marvel/Shazam art!

There's still a lot of Transformers Animated art ideas I have on the back burner. Earlier this year I REALLY wanted to draw some Ratchcee properly but never truly got to it. God and I want to draw Yoketron meeting Bulkhead and the Dinobots so bad, that was always a big one.

I know I've drawn Higurashi before here and there but... I really do want to draw more Higurashi art in general. There's a certain scene from the 6th arc that really stuck in my head and I want to illustrate.

And then there's my long list of merch ideas I still need to draw. 😭

17. What inspires you?

Man, SO many things. Any piece of media I read or watch or play, I'll probably get SOMETHING out of it. There's new ideas to get from everything! Nature too, I feel like I turn to it a lot when gathering refs and inspo.

Of course there's ones I always go back to. Paper Mario and Higurashi are big ones for me as far as writing inspo goes, when it's about more technical story things like structure and such.

And I have to shout out Metroid specifically for creature design, even as a little kid I was drawing Metroid monsters absolutely ENAMORED with them, and for me it's my go-to inspo for alien and creature design.

But most of all, what inspires me to create is just... sharing the things that make me happy with other people! I struggle a lot to communicate with others... and art is a big part of how I try to and how I interact with the world. The connections make me very happy, and also just being able to realize my ideas for me.

And of course, my lovely friends who support me. 🥺💖

i wish i could internalise this but you see the problem is that the fandoms are all american and so is much of the source material and there are just things that... don't translate across cultural contexts that would be essential to doing this? when I try to write my little guys being like me, people think they're overbearing and intimidating because there is a completely, completely different script for how to be a woman in the west, especially among non-jewish people

and that doesn't go away just because everyone wants it to, it's a subconsciously irk that i have to actively mitigate by playing so nice, the most nicest, nicest in the world. i hate playing nice so much it's hardly conceivable

having ocs is about community to share them with and if the community doesn't really want to bother to think about that there are un-American realities where people think and are motivated very differently, then where you end up is that can only play true representations of yourself when they are literal aliens :") literal grey aliens in my case

Anyway this likely sounds like I'm mad at you which I'm not, so below the cut here's some actionable ways to support your friends when they want to introduce you to ocs dealing with their cultural identity:

1. Be normal about it, we're all just blokes here, treat them the same way you'd treat any other person's little player character

2. Ask questions and engage with all their silly little fanon that explains how they're like that in a world where xyz is not textually real

3. When you're close enough people fucking love it when you want to play their ocs family, they don't care about the cultural distance, people marry people from different cultures all the time, they will coach you about how to do this, you will learn so much

4. Thru interaction with them you will gradually realize we're all just blokes and your friend can explain any difference in mentality that could matter

5. There will be such differences and they will be narratively significant but it's possible to be normal and encouraging about it and engage like a normal human with the challenging themes that can come from foreign upbringings

6. There will almost definitely be challenging themes because American imperialism has a very wide reach, and beyond that other imperialism exists. The night is dark and full of terrors out there past the core. Things you can brush aside as too political with your American friends are just part of life in some places, and that's not your fault but it feels pretty surreal to have to elide it for your comfort

This is just like a fact and the sooner you stop being guilty about it as if its your fault the sooner you'll be able to appreciate the poignancy of your friend's oc, the world's dumbest coyote

7. You're allowed to check your foreign friends for getting heavy on you out of nowhere, they're not made of porcelain. You're also allowed to joke.

8. Try to take this as an opportunity to read more widely. Read media from that country and reference it even — your foreign friends have to do it to fit in with you, why not make your ocs aware of the sources of their jokes and cultural memes? One of the most charming irl interactions I've had recently was with a random Michigan guy who knew who Verka Serduchka was

9. All of this applies to intercultural competence in general, armed with the ability to understand how to not make people feel weird and lesser for not being American you will do numbers on Xiaohongshu

Hey. You. If you're a second language English speaker. You should make more of your ocs your own nationality. They don't all need to have inexplicably English names. They don't all need to somehow conform to American cultural conventions. They should speak your first language also. Holds your shoulders and looks you deeply in the eyes. Okay? Okay.
