C1 Ep 30 Vexleth moments:

Not particularly a Vexleth moment but Matt starts explaining about entities and he starts with 'I mean' and Marisha immediately says "whenever Matt starts with 'I mean' " and both Laura and Marisha say "I mean" together at the same time and it reminded me of the "Hi" moment between Imodna for some reason.

Vax says that's it's best that they dont stay where they are currently cos they got attacked while Vex disagreed and said it's best to stay put. After she says that he says sarcastically it's going to work out real well like when the Vex and Keyleth went down to the cavern. Keyleth jumps to her defence and says that if they didnt go down to the cavern and find Clarota then they wouldnt have defeated Kvarn (and shes right). And then Keyleth says Vex is right and agreed with her to stay.

Vax and Keyleth were gonna stay on watch and then Vex says she'll stay with them because she doesnt want them to be alone (I see you jealous Vex I see you). Also this happens a little later but when they split into groups Vex immediately says "Keyleth you and me" before Percy says they are all sticking together expect for Vax and Scanlan (Percy you asshole and Vex looked slightly disappointed ngl).

Another moment when Vex wants Keyleth with them (her) when They have to attack two houses and Keyleth says shes going with Scanlan, Vex immediately jumps in and says "no comes with us Keyleth".

I disagree with this framing of Vax's feelings as him being 100% inflexible about his role with the matron. Before his behavior with her could be read as that, but he has directly stated that he also wishes he could go back, its mainly that he doesnt want to go back on a promise.

The results of what happens with the gods, informs how his fate tied to the raven queen will end up, whether he gets a leave of absence, is still tied to her after de-deification, or she is consumed. His main character trait is wanting to be some reliable, someone who can help others, and lighten the mood. In his old life he sought to be a breath of fresh air, a bit of an impish prankster, someone who wanted to enjoy the fruits of life and encourage others to share them with him.

I don't think resurrecting Vax is overriding Vax's desires as he clearly would like to return to his life but his strong sense of moral obligation means that unless circumstances change he wont consider it. He wont agree to them tricking the Raven Queen or utilizing a loophole to bring him back unless he either has her blessing or his duties are done/taken up by another. That doesn't mean he's anti revival under any circumstances.

Plus we've seen Keyleth struggle over being happy that Vax is back for one more night, despite the Raven Queen granting him a temporary respite. She has clearly been going through it, and what seemed like a sweet gesture with the ravens he sent, are something that prevents her from moving on. She wants finality to move past this schrodinger's mourning period. Either Vax becomes part of her life from now on or she needs to extinguish the possibility of it happening.

Even so despite Keyleth having a lot of negative bias toward the Raven, even if it has subsided over time, she still doesn't try to beg or plead with Vax to ignore the Raven Queen. She understands his sense of honor amongst this and doesn't to force him to go against his own beliefs. The same attitude is true of Vex, although to some extent she's more willing to try and pester him about it in a sisterly way. I dont think either of them would make a concerted effort to influence Vax against his own desires for their own benefit. And If Vax returns, it will be in a way where he is making his own choice and liking sticking to his word to the Raven Queen.

I think I pinned down what bothers me the *most* about the "Free Vax from the Raven Queen" sentiment, including from the characters in the game (only because of how I see their in-character arguments being used in discussions). It boils down to the fact that people do not listen to what Vax himself says that he wants. He's said it multiple times, if you listen! And I understand why Keyleth and Vex kind of brush it aside (because they miss him and if they accepted this is his choice they would have to accept that they're angry at him for choosing it), but seeing so many arguments from the fandom to the effect of "Keyleth is sad, they need to fix it!" ignores Vax's agency in the situation by putting Keyleth's wants above his, and also says that Keyleth should be protected from having to actually deal with her grief.

Resurrecting Vax and having them live out Vax's remaining years together without consequence (because no matter what, she *will* outlive him by about ten times over) would not "cheapen" the story of his sacrifice, because that's not how stories work, but it would say that Keyleth's wants and values and needs are more valuable and important than Vax's.

Resurrecting Vax for Keyleth is akin to Deanna being resurrected for her husband. One person's choices are being placed above another's.

scanlan - she LOVES scanlan. honestly, absolutely adores him. it was just like, right away, he knew what to do and how to help her. she had a little crush on him if she’s being honest, but wont say shit about it. why? because when VM visits, he’ll sing to her, he’ll sit with her after she has nightmares, and he will, with her permission, lay in bed with her. he treats her just like he would anyone else - inappropriate, flirty jokes - and it makes her feel not as messed up

vax - one of the other members she crushed on. they're both rogues and spent time teaching each other their preferred fighting methods, so she bonded with him quick. she enjoys his company and *spoiler* misses him after his deal with the raven queen results in his death

vex - she really loves vex. vex ends up extremely protective of her, especially *spoiler* after she loses vax. she teaches her how to do her hair when it finally starts getting long.

percy - surprisingly... i think she has a lot of bad feelings towards him. because when she looks at it, he left her. he could have, should have come to check if she was alive. or even try to save her. but he just left her, bleeding out in the snow. it was severly traumatic and i think it makes her hate him a bit. further, she resents that he is constantly off galavanting with friends while shes stuck trying to revive whitestone.

keyleth - she has Many feelings about keyleth. mostly, at first, confusion and sort of fear. she wasnt comfortable waking up to see a stranger with antlers who, when she screamed in fear, immediately reacting by screaming back then hugging her. after thr dust settles, though, she is incredibly fond of her and harbors a crush for a while. I do wanna emphasize that Cassandra develops crushes very easily after years of unhealthy "affection" from the briarwoods and probably not as much affection as she needed with the de Rolos (she was one of, like, 7 kids and her parents obviously still had to run the city). once she sees keyleth give vex an excited hug and is like wow if keyleth did that to me I'd probably fall in love with her. rhen keyleth does and Cassandra's like by the Dawnfather this cannot be happening.

grog - besties, basically. they're training partners so Cassandra can practice combatting bigger targets and grog can practice combatting small/quick moving targets. also, after seeing a post about it, I hc Cassandra with dyslexia, so they bond quick over the struggle to read/write. Cassandra still has more trouble with it as running whitestone involves lots of paperwork, but being with him reminds her that shes not an idiot.

pike - probably spends the least amount of time with her tbh, sorry pike. she does like pike, she just doesnt exactly have any common ground with her to bond over. percy also probably tries to make cass tell someone (*cough* pike *cough*) about her trauma and she doesnt like doing anything like that.

trinket - best boy. best best best boy. she loves him so so so much. every now and then when vm is in whitestone (or post canon) she can be found snuggling with him and her cat as she talks through whatever problem she cant figure out.

so i just queued up that post about chronic hanahaki (vs terminal hanahaki) and that wont be popping out of the queue until tomorrow but

because of that post and Legends of Vox Machina being on my mind, now I'm thinking about vax and keyleth hanahaki au where everything else is the same except vax keeps coughing up petals that look suspiciously like the flowers in keyleth's hair

vex is so done with him and grog or scanlan or someone is really confused why he keeps eating keyleth's flowers. the confession scene finally happens and he's still coughing up flowers when keyleth is like 'thank you.... but we cant....'

but that doesnt cure the hanahaki so he's still coughing up flowers and vex is still like so over this and now that he's been clued in scanlan keeps trying to get vax to go to a brothel to 'get his mind off things' and vax is just pointedly pretending nothings wrong until suddenly it just. stops

and no one else in the party knows whats up with that. is hanahaki season over now? did vax get over himself? does keyleth like him back? theres literally no way to know because the two of them are still acting like nothings going on??

and the twist is that vax and keyleth also don't know whats that means! they get like one quiet moment of 'hey so I noticed your flowers are gone...' I agree. Arkhan and what I seen from Joe is weird to me. He also prefers to DM than play which shows sometimes. I think my biggest criticism of him is a character he made for the book Journey into Avernus. Krull is a mad scientist type. With like a 11 or something in intelligence because Krull is a cleric so he doesnt need the stat. This is in contrast for CR who usually dump con in favor of other stats for roleplay things.

i mean i wouldn’t necessarily agree the cr cast tend to dump con for roleplay stats, because honestly they don’t (no main player character’s ever had a negative con stat, and the only 0s are the twins - everyone else across both campaigns has had positive con), but they are definitely more rp focused, because the important part - you don’t need a high stat for good rp. the dump stats are also what they focus on, because they define a character just as much as the high stats - caduceus’ and grog’s low intelligence, vex’s low strength, scanlan and fjord’s low wisdom, veth and yasha’s low charisma (also keyleth’s wasn’t even that bad, it was average, but bc that was the lowest in vox machina that became a thing too)

also you can play low/high stats without necessarily having them - keyleth’s charisma is a great example, but also percy and vax had the same intelligence score for most of the campaign (percy levelled his up a lot later), and they definitely played a disparity there. lionel, too, had a positive int score, but he played it as around the same as grog’s, because that tracked for the character

but yeah, said friend i mentioned who’s really into arkhan is also dming descent into avernus for us (slowgoing bc everyone’s been busy, so we haven’t gotten to hell yet, though we’re all aware that’s about to happen bc, title of the game, no one’s subtle about it), so, haven’t met most of the characters, and i didn’t know joe was involved in any but arkhan (i’m also aware arkhan and the hand of vecna are in that book), but that tracks

I like certain aspects of C1, and a lot of Vox Machina is endearing and wonderful, but I find all of the first campaign really hard to watch

From a player and a DM perspective I just cannot watch a 5 1/2 long episode with half the cast yelling over each other and the other half doing world-breaking shit. I know there was a sort of loosey-goosey transition between their Pathfinder homegames and 5e, and Matt and Taliesin are used to editions older than 4th even, but there were a lot of times when I felt basic rules got swept under the rug for Vax and Percy but were unfairly or even sometimes incorrectly applied to Keyleth and Vex. Vax literally broke the game multiple times, and I know a lot of the campaign was like Matt’s gift to Liam, but it’s a campaign with 8 of your friends that you’re now producing as a show so it can’t just be about the one guy anymore. No one likes playing D&D where one character is literally touched by fate and can move 120 feet and doing 5 attacks a round. even if the rest of the team are like, high level barbarians fighters and spellcasters it feels unbalanced and it isn’t fun to watch.

a lot of the combat mechanics in C1 feel sloppy too, in terms that PCs didnt know their own character abilities or had a misunderstanding of how Action-Bonus Action-Reaction 5e combat works. It’s not really anyone’s fault, that happens when you change game systems, but to the point that I actually skip combat scenes, which unfortunately can be like a majority of the episode (and have really important character moments, like death). the Kraken fight comes to mind (there aren’t 40 feet fast eels Keyleth I’m sorry), it felt like Grog had the best grasp on his character’s mechanics and goals, and I was yelling at the screen for the other PCs to look at their character sheets. i dont know why Keyleth wasnt a water elemental to start or why Vax didn’t spend all his time stealth-investigating for the lodestones or why Percy didnt think to try luring the beast or talking to it or why Vex didn’t- actually Vex did everything she could Rangers have massive drawbacks. But!! These are issues I have with VM in most fights, theyve gotten better in their level 20 one shots, but still there I want them to please read their character sheets, bc Keyleth is an archdruid who doesnt use spell components anymore and can cast from Wild Shape and that’s tight as hell. Vex’s character mechanics still suck at level 20 but that is not her fault at all 5e literally just hates Rangers. And can we talk about that? Why do Rangers not get half the shit other classes get? How come Rangers have to wait until level 17 to use hide as a bonus action? Rogues get that at 2nd level. Anyway.

I think another part of it comes from player experience, and what kind of PCs are and are not fun to have at the table. Personally I dont like the fate touched concept, I don’t have fun as a player when one character is designed from the start to be more special and important, esp when that character talks about hating it so much all the time. TBH I don’t know why Vax is such a shit about the Raven Queen deal it seems like you got something no one else has ever gotten (she let you have your sister back bro) and you literally signed up for this. A God is giving you Special Awesome God Powers that make you more of a terrifying game breaking monster and you’re gonna keep calling the Raven Queen a bitch? for what? because you didn’t check for traps? because you didnt have a spellcaster that could use telekinesis? what about that situation wasnt entirely character choices lmao

betwen Vax and Percy (dont get me started on Mr. I Know Better Than Everyone, i really fucking hate PCs like that and i will fight about my distaste for percival von frankenstein monsterenergydrink the third) there are a lot of moments in C1 that aren’t fun to watch bc I know they arent fun for everyone at the table to play. it can be really cool to watch someone else’s backstory unfold, but if that’s all you’re doing it’s super easy to check out (I dont think it’s an RP decision when Grog has no idea what’s happening, I too haven’t been listening to Percy argue about this inconsequential thing to no one in particular) think of all the early C2 Caleb-Beau moments when it was clear half the tabl wasn’t paying attention, and how quickly that was resolved after people voiced their opinions on it (Matt for sure talked to them about dominating RP and making too many smaller moments that leave out the rest of the table, I wish a certain wizard would take it to heart), but that didnt feel like a conversation anyone had during the first campaign.

maybe it’s because i didnt watch C1 live or because I watched C2 first, but I have- not even a preference really a deference to the Mighty Nein. I think they’re more fun, more entertaining to watch, more emotionally involved and driven, better developed and created, better in all aspects, smarter and funnier and sexier than Vox Machina. I dont care about high fantasy stories with legendary heroes that are basically gods that is such a boring way to play D&D, I want the dumbass characters to use and magic to play pranks on local shopkeepers and i want the lesbians to have a slow burn romance.

I dont even wanna touch on C1 romance bc like, gag me with a spoon I don’t like the way Kashaw or Vax interact with Keyleth theyre both so fucking annoying. Idk why men cant be normal and talk to the fantasy girl they have a fantasy crush on, but Fjord managed just fucking fine.

i need to go back to sleep but in essence my opinions are that C1 was a classic 1980s D&D campaign that would have made Gary Gygax proud. And now that D&D is a lot better than it was in the 80s, more accessible and a lot less shitty, we can have cool modern fantasy stories that expect more from PCs, DMs, and the audience. We can do cooler, better things than we used to, and the structure of 5e actually helps facilitate more roleplaying between characters. The 5e PHB has whole sections devoted to roleplaying your character, and now Tasha’s gives everyone a way to get rid of stupid racist features and make your characters cooler. I’m really happy to see the progession of both WOTC and Critical Role into better, cooler, more awesome and less shitty versions of themselves (this isnt a WOTC defense post im not a shill they should pay the Dragonlance writers)

while im rly enjoying lovm i find i had the same issue with vax//leth as i did watching c1 that i was hoping they would change for the show (spoilers under cut)

i love vm but i dont rly feel strongly for any of the ships, even the canon ones, but i liked perc//ahlia and pike//lan a bit more and vax//leth not that much bc it felt rushed and came out of nowhere? mostly in c1 but didnt get much better in the show.

like in c1 i was rly confused when liam made that “reveal” and based on marisha’s reaction it didnt seem like it was planned? yes i know they’ve been playing as them long before c1 started airing, but literally the entire time before that moment there wasnt a single moment that indicated vax had any feelings for key/leth or vice versa, and then it seemed like marisha was like yeah i guess i’ll roll with it! cuz keyleth saying “i think i love you too” in c1 definitely felt like it came out of nowhere. at least in the show they tried to show more moments leading up to the confession....but the whole “secretly making goo-goo eyes” and the really awkward “flirty” moments between them felt forced. like tbh while watching c1 i thought keyleth and percy were gonna end up a couple at first cuz they had more significant interactions than her and vax did lmao

and we’ve had those moments with scanlan towards pike, but in c1 to me it seemed clear based on pike not reciprocating at first, scanlan being in love with her was established prior to them airing episodes, so in the show it doesnt feel forced either since at least i know (from having watched c1) it will further develop if they continue down that road.

with perc/ahlia, the way they’re developing feels much more natural. i wasnt like wtf when vex confessed in c1, and in the show the bread crumbs being left already feel more organic and believable: the way vex pays a little extra attention to percy, especially with all this shit going on with him, their bantering, the way her hand lingers on his wrist in one of the newer episodes... bc we have these particular moments that isnt just awkward flirting shoved in at intervals, the (eventual?) confession would be the final piece falling into place.

idk again i dont rly ship anything strongly even tho i love vm, and while im not necessarily anti vax//leth, i feel like it just happened way too quickly and out of nowhere before i could get on board with the idea of them getting together? like in both c1 and in the show its just super rushed, whereas the other two were more subtle in their build-up...is basically what im getting at.

i know that in a sense8 au vox machina would be their own cluster ofc but season 2 has shown that even tho ppl are in separate clusters, they can still get visits from total strangers and it makes me laugh because like

imagine kash already being pretty comfortable in his cluster with zahra and a few other people so all of the initial discomfort he initially had with it has died down and then one day he’s brushing his teeth after taking a shower and he looks up with the toothbrush still in his mouth and in the mirror he sees a tattooed redhead in a sun hat holding gardening tools just staring at his bare ass with the Widest Eyes and he’s just like “..........you’ve got to be kidding me”
