And now Valiant by Sarah McGuire?? I wonder how many obscure favorite books we share!
AW YEAH VALIANT FAN GREETINGS I am. Deeply insane about this particular book. I've been slowly reading through and posting about it for oh, the past year or so (I keep getting distracted) and you've caught me just at the end! And then I'm gonna start it again so I can annotate it for my friend! Super normal, as you can see
Okay now I'M wondering how many obscure favorites we share excuse me while I send you an ask! Also thank you so much for reaching out!

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire | Book Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I put off reading this series for quite literally years, because the blurb was so promising that if it had been bad I would have been devastated. I finally bit the bullet this week, and this is everything I wanted and more, like a Miss Peregrine meets Narnia meets House Of Hollow mash up, and I wanted the book to be longer before I'd even finished the first chapter.
I felt this story introduced us to the house and the characters who had found themselves there really well, explaining the different worlds they had found themselves in before ending up back on earth in a way I understood easily. And this kept the pace up and my attention by brutally killing off multiple characters by the end of the story.
I did guess the culprit, but solving the mystery didn't feel as important as getting the reader to know the characters. I loved all of them, and the final pages had me wondering what on earth was happening next and where this story was going to go. I'm not reading the blurbs too far ahead, but now I've read the blurb for book 2, I love the choice of POV switch. 5/5

THE TOURNAMENT IS OVER! Eartha Kitt lounges in her deck chair in the sun, dipping her toes in the pool with Toshiro Mifune and sipping a brightly colored fruity something with an umbrella in it.

Do you have any suggestions of appropriate books for 14 to 16 year olds that have "dragons but no romance"? My young friend would enjoy the romantasy genre, if only it would avoid the romance part. I don't know for certain that she will end up identifying as aro/ace, but it's looking like a good assumption at this point and I'd really like to be able to give some recommendations that would be supportive of that as much as being a standard YA fantasy story.
Thanks for all your fabulous book recs!
thank you so much! unfortunately no romance and dragons are difficult parameters to fill so here is what i found in different categories
no romance and dragons
to shape a dragons breath by moniquill blackgoose
i have only started this book, it is a fantasy that reads like historical fiction. a girl finds a dragon egg and attends the colonizer institution that trains dragons and humans. im pretty sure there is no romance (if there is it is definitely not central) and great for teens who want more dragons!
tea dragon society by kay o'neill
a graphic novel series about a young girl who becomes a member of a society that protects small dragons who make tea from the leaves they grow. very sweet and whimsical, the only romance are established romances.
the dragon of ynys by minerva cerridwen
a fairytale like story about a knight who keeps going to the dragon to ask for the town's treasures back. if i remember correctly, all romances are already established before the story starts and does serve as motivation but not a focus of the story.
dragons and a little bit of romance
the girl who drank the moon by kelly barnhill
this is on the younger side but reads like a fairy tale. it is about a town forced to sacrifice a baby to the witch in the woods except the witch doesn't know why the town abandons the baby and takes them to another village. and one year she feeds the baby moonlight and needs to raise her. there is a dragon and other magic and both children and adults act as narrators. one of the characters goes on a quest for his wife and child but that's all the romance there is.
fantasy with no romance
thornhedge by t kingfisher
a retelling of sleeping beauty from the fairys perspective, except sleeping beauty is a changeling. a short novella with no romance.
every heart a doorway by seanan mcguire
children after they have traveled to a magical world, struggle to adjust to their former worlds and attend a boarding school together. half fantasy, half murder mystery, this is the first in a series of novellas that are great adult books that really work well for a teen audience. the main character of this one is aroace and there are different mcs in each novella and the romance never takes center stage if there is any.
sisters of the neversea by cynthia leitich smith
this is more middle grade but as an adult, i found it really interesting and engaging. this is peter pan but through a feminist and post colonialism lens. wendy and lily are stepsisters and they go to neverland with their brother micheal with the untrustworthy peter pan.
i hope this helps and i hope your young friend finds something she can enjoy on the list!!

THEY STOLE THE SUN / an introduction
🔆 adult, science fiction, horror 🛫 body horror, gore, violence, sexual content, and more 🙊 currently outlining 🧪 i am scared of the dark, my hearing sucks, i don't trust most people, and i'd rather die doing what i wanted even if it's incredibly pointless. how can you miss something you never saw? there's also monster fucker representation. and three povs! not of the monster fucking. but that would be kinda funny. 🔅 spotify / pinterest 💉 picrew used
on the two-hundred-and-twentieth anniversary of the sun disappearing, a bunker council leader declares that the hunter's should be disbanded, regrouped into the bunker guard to police people instead of searching for the corpses of those that dared to leave. after all, it's been over a year since the last time someone tried. what's the point? they should be doing a better job of guarding the doors in the first place. a week later, the bunker wakes up to strangers at their door. the last and only time the heizfree bunker let in any outsiders, it brought a sickness that has plagued their descendants ever since. and that was before they had even found the bunker; when their founders were still barely surviving in the destroyed air force base. with the entire five floors below them voting for them to lose their jobs and change their lives just as they've discovered something that could possibly save them- the hunters decide to let the outsiders in. after all, they guard the doors. the strangers claim they've been traveling across the state looking for survivors, that they saw them running from a shadow and were impressed by their skills. they offer to bring the hunters back with them, and only then they'll be able to understand how they survive out there, and that it could be possible for them, too. it's also completely possible that they're liars and that the hunters have just marked themselves for certain death instead, but what else have they got to lose? their jobs were always going to lead them to it, anyway. they might as well go out trying to do something better than the people before them.

the hunters — in order of appearance
antontio castillo - 30 | capricorn | general
van boyd - 26 | gemini | colonel
sterling townsend - 27 | aries | lieutenant
knox perry - 26 | sagittarius | captain
lily calderon* - 20 | capricorn | captain
phoebe howard - 23 | gemini | captain
vegas leon - 24 | taurus | captain
*lily is the lone survivor of her family, her dad was the last from his generation of hunters and was killed four years before the story in an attack that still leaves the bunker shaken. his death happened three months before she was meant to join the guard boot camp, which would allow her to become a hunter and many of those within the bunker tried to sway her from enlisting. but if there's one word you can describe lily as, it would be determined. besides, those people didn't care about her or her family before, why would she listen to them, then?
Tumblr media
the outsiders — in order of appearance
rem - 31 | taurus
kali* - 25 | libra
anders - 25 | scorpio
sierra - 22 | leo
*kali has been traveling across texas to search for survivors since she was twelve, along with rem, who she considers her older sister at this point. they were raised by the same scientists, but that's where the similarities end. where kali is caring, diplomatic, and serious about the offers she gives to the survivors they meet, rem could be considered the opposite. quick to set their ever-revolving pair of guards off on whoever turns on them. but anders and sierra have lasted longer than most of their guards so far, and kali really enjoys their company, even if they can be incredibly cold sometimes. she knows she can be the same, so she can't fault them for it too much.
Tumblr media
the scientists — in order of appearance
tucker marshall - 70 | cancer
shiloh schaefer* - 27 | virgo
violet mcguire - 25 | aquarius
*shiloh is the youngest daughter of edith schaefer: one of the council leaders and a member of the light of life, a religion followed by a majority of the bunker. shiloh was originally studying at the medical bay when her older sister was indoctrinated following a rough stint during her voluntary medic time with the guard, who are known for being unpleasant to, well, everyone. shiloh knew she didn't want to follow her family's footsteps and plead with dr. marshall to switch to studying with him to avoid that life, knowing he has a vocal dislike for them and needed someone to follow in his footsteps eventually. she's since been a diligent pupil, but may be working on something behind his back. just to see if her hypothesis is correct before she shows him, of course.

The Mysterious And Amazing Blue Billings by Lily Morton (haunted houses and ghost tours, with real ghosts!)🏳️‍🌈
The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (love this series, werewolves & shifters & fae politics, just be careful there are some heavy trigger warnings for some of the books) (queer side characters!)

The Scapegracers by H.A. Clarke (ya, saapphic witches, girl gang, religious trauma(?), a little bit of body horror)🏳️‍🌈
The October Daye series by Seanan McGuire (fae, politics, found family (literally), and so many adventures!) (queer side characters!)
The Chronicles of Nick by Sherrilyn Kenyon (this is a ya spin off from her Dark Hunters series, lots of supernatural creatures, gods, immortals, demons all fighting to change the main characters past and set him on different paths, time fuckery, people messing with the timelines) (queer side characters!)
If you don’t mind omegaverse stories:
The Dragonfate Games series by Hawke Oakley (mpreg omegaverse, The Bachelor style tv show meet-cute, fated mates, honestly these are hilarious and something fun to get lost in for a while)🏳️‍🌈

Thoughts:
Emily Wilde II didn't disappoint, but Mislaid in Parts Half Known did. I was really hoping we'd be immersed in a world of dinosaurs similar to Across the Green Grass Fields, but we spent such little time there.
The non-fiction reads this month really outshone the fiction reads. I especially enjoyed Betty Gilpin's All the Women in My Brain. It was weird and wonderful.

Odd questions but I’m interested in the scope of Tiny in your opinion.
- Is it always PG? Or does it get explicit?
-Is ur interpretation and HC only wholesome?
-Are they dating?
-Or is Remus like, Lizzie McGuire and Sirius is like a Mini Lizzie?
-Are they at hogwarts?
-What’s the origin story?
-is this Remus also a werewolf?
Like im genuinely fascinated! genuinely would love to know the answers! And if you’re not game to answer bc it takes away some of the “glamour” or interpretation (even though I feel like we’ll equally be excited for each video when it drops even if we know) of them that’s cool I respect it. But would stillllll love to know 😝🥰ILY xxxxx
Orrrr would love to see these q explored in future videos ! Idk just a thought 🤍🤍🤍
Tiny’s forever open for your own interpretations, he can bimble around being whatever or whoever. But as you’ve asked for my takes on them:
Tiny and Remus won’t be getting up to anything explicit in my storytelling, I wouldn’t know how or where to start with exploring that, so as it stands it’s a very PG relationship.
This is a magical verse as Tiny’s a minuscule breed of something very fairy-esque. Remus is a werewolf yes, and actually discovered him in his werewolf form during a particularly calm full moon. He was trudging through the woods, plodding about until he stumbled across a shivering Tiny wedged in a nest of damp leaves. It took one inquisitive sniff from the wolf for Tiny to try and attack (which failed but succeeded in charming his companion) though soon realised this huge daft creature was no threat. Remus prodded and sniffled for a few minutes until resigning to curling around him on the floor, keeping one eye on him rustling around in the leaves, until confidence was gained and eventually Sirius climbed on his snout and settled between the extra soft fur near Moony’s ear.
Remus discovered Tiny after Hogwarts and is somewhere around mid-twenties. At some point, there may be a magical way for Tiny to become the big Sirius we all know, but for now there’s no such thing and Sirius exists in this verse as a wee mythical creature.
I don’t think they’re dating, but there’s an unspoken rule that Remus is satisfied being Tiny’s caretaker. A friend once suggested that the people in Remus’ life have just accepted this “tiny life partner”. These boys are on their soulmate shit in every universe, even in these ones where they’re not necessarily romantically involved, but experience a strong bond nonetheless. Nothing is taking Tiny away from Remus, and god help you if you try take away Tiny’s Moony.
All I know is they’re happy with their little existence and Remus and Lily enjoy coming up with inventive ways to make Tiny-sized objects for him to function. (A toothpaste cap for him to gargle a splash of mouthwash was one of Remus’ proudest moments).

For the flower prompts...
Calla Lily (it's my favourite flower) - Something at first sight.
I leave it to you to do any Sandman pairing you have an itch to write. 💜😊
Ooooooo this one is so appropriate for me as one of my fave fics I’ve written (not for this fandom) is called Calla Lillies 💖💖 I also added a little personalized twist on this, just for you 😘
Flower Prompt Game!
(Also, for anyone still wondering, I am in fact still accepting prompts! Gonna be a bit slow and answer one or two a day, but I’m so glad this has been such a hit!)
—---
When Morpheus Endless (and isn’t that the name of the century?) enters the coffee shop in a whirlwind of taut anxiety and indignant rage, Simon Snow does not even say hello, he merely takes up residence at the espresso machine to start preparing the most absurdly complex drink known to man.
“Your man is here,” Penelope deadpans, and Simon rolls his eyes. Morpheus is not his man. He’s very nice to look at, yes, and he may or may not bear a striking resemblance to Simon’s hopelessly secret crush arch nemesis, but they’re too alike in temperament to be anything more than friends. But he can see where the confusion comes from.
When he finishes making Morpheus’s regular order, he calls for his break and walks over, drink in hand, to the corner Morpheus and his terribly bad mood have taken up residence.
“Bad day?” Simon asks, placing the absurdly sweet concoction down on the table where Morpheus has sprawled all his notebooks and laptop. He’s not looking at any of it though, more preoccupied with whatever social media scandal is happening on his phone.
“Cory left me,” Morpheus growls, tapping angrily at the screen. “For Alex Burgess. Who, as you recall, is currently still in a relationship with Paul Mcguire, the unfaithful bastard.”
Simon has no idea who these people are besides Cory, who has come into the shop with Morpheus once. He doesn’t pay attention to the campus gossip. More specifically, the rich people campus gossip. Because Simon is here at the university on scholarship, working part time at the local coffee shop for a little extra spending money, and Morpheus is part of the very small, elite group of legacy family admissions.
No one, not even Penelope, Simon’s best friend since childhood, understands why he and Morpheus get along so well. Simon knows it’s partially because he’s the only one willing to make Morpheus’s stupidly complicated order, and partially because they’re both grumpy bisexuals who fall in love too easily with the wrong people.
“You were too good for him anyways,” Simon replies, plopping down into the chair next to Morpheus.
“Damn right I am,” Morpheus answers, picking up his coffee that is actually more syrup, sugar and milk than anything resembling coffee. And that was after Simon added four shots of espresso. He groans happily as he takes his first sip. “He was awful in bed anyways.”
Simon snorts. “Maybe you should try not dating rich assholes,” he offers.
“No? I should only pine for them hopelessly from across the rugby pitch?” Morpheus answers pointedly.
“Wow, you’re lucky I’m on shift or I’d tip that sad excuse for coffee into your lap,” Simon bites back, feeling the familiar heat of anger rise up in him. Because of course Morpheus knew about Simon’s complicated feelings towards Baz. But he didn’t have to be an asshole about it just because he got dumped.
Morpheus sniffles. “These jeans are Gucci,” is all he says back, before taking another sip of his coffee and letting the subject drop.
———————
Simon’s break is over before he knows it, and not a moment too soon. He and Penelope are swamped by the late-afternoon rush. Simon doesn’t know how so many people could be craving coffee this late in the day, but to each their own. Morpheus had ordered a second cup of his ungodly drink right before the rush hit, and it’s when he’s finishing up that drink and getting ready to leave that half the rugby team decides to walk into the cafe and ruin Simon’s day.
“Snow,” Baz Pitch sneers at him when he gets to the counter to order. Simon rolls his eyes.
“Let me guess, black tea for the blackness in your soul?” he retorts, smirking when Baz’s face goes tight with annoyance.
“Ooooh, this guy’s got you down to a T,” a brunette answers, coming up from behind Baz and draping an arm over his shoulders.
“Shut up Hob,” Baz replies, rolling his eyes and shrugging his friend off before turning back to Simon. “And yes, black tea, but do try not to over-steep it this time Snow.”
“I’ll have a caramel latte,” the man called Hob adds, “with extra caramel syrup since Bazzy’s paying.”
“Hob I swear if you call me Bazzy one more time—”
“Yeah, yeah, you’ll sue me for defamation somehow, hey, can I get a couple of cake pops too?” Hob answers all in one breath. Simon gets the impression the man is something like a golden retriever in human form.
“Sure, anything for a friend of Bazzy's,” Simon chuckles before he turns to work on their order. He can practically feel Baz seething from behind him as he prepares their order.
As he’s getting ready to prepare Hob’s latte, Simon catches Morpheus out of the corner of his eye approaching the counter, and he instinctively starts preparing a drink for him as well. Seriously, how the hell could Morpheus stomach one of these, let alone three in a single sitting?
“The line is behind me, Endless,” Simon hears Baz say.
“Ah, that’s where you’re mistaken, Basil,” Morpheus replies smoothly. “There is no line when you’re the favorite.”
“Who the hell says you’re the favorite?” Baz snaps
“I do,” Simon cuts in, bringing over the order, and making sure to hand Morpheus’s drink over first. He can just tell Baz is irrationally mad about the whole thing. “Unlike some other customers, Morpheus is a sweetheart.”
“Thank you, dear heart,” Morpheus practically coos at him before turning back to Baz and Hob and smirking. “The cake pops are quite good, by the way.”
“Good to know!” Hob answers cheerily. “Did you want one, by the way? Didn’t realize how large they were,” he adds holding one out.
Morpheus looks taken aback, but accepts the cake pop with a meek thank you and then with their order complete, the rugby team starts making their way towards the exit. Morpheus stares after them as they leave, cake pop still in hand.
“I think I’m in love,” Morpheus says once the cafe has totally emptied out.
“You’re what now?” Simon exclaims, then groans. “Please tell me this isn’t about the cake pop.”
“He has nice eyes,” Morpheus argues. “And if he tolerates Basil’s awful attitude, I’m practically a ray of sunshine in comparison.”
“You're not wrong,” Penelope cuts in, leaning her elbows down on the counter next to Simon. “And if Morpheus can get Hob, maybe he can help you get Baz, Si.”
“That is a terrible plan,” Simon says. “And anyways, Baz hates me.”
“It’s an excellent plan,” Morpheus replies. “And also, you’re an idiot. Basil was ready to stab me with my own fountain pen for touching you so casually.”
“He was not!” Simon squeaks.
“No, he definitely was, I’m with Morpheus here,” Penelope says. “Maybe you two should pretend to date and see how long it takes for Baz to crack.”
“Absolutely not,” Simon says at the same time Morpheus answers “That’s an excellent idea.”
Simon groans.
“I don’t have a choice in the matter do I?” he asks.
“Not at all,” Morpheus replies, biting into the cake pop.

Snippet
One Monday Teddy asked, “Uncle Harry, why are your flowers always sad?” pointing to the newspaper under his nose. The pen was still in Harry’s hand, half-chewed.
“I,” he said, stopped. Squinted at the sketching, didn’t really see it. “Are they? Sad?”
“Yeah! Look at this one,” sticky-peanut-butter-finger wiggled very close to his face. “It’s all frowning and all.”
Did look at the lily in question, couldn’t really see where a face would be for it to frown. An eyebrow, maybe, in that line over there, or—“Oh,” when it hit him. The sagginess to the corners. “Yeah, I guess it is a bit sad.”
“They always are,” with a truly Hermione-level of self-assuredness. “Is it because of the, you know, the Terrible and Devastating Loss You’ve’ad Suffered and… everything Mrs. McGuire always goes on about?”
Choked on a startled laugh, buried his face in his palm. “Sorry! No, it’s not—sorry. Jesus, Ted, you surprised me there, is all.”
Thankfully, mercifully, Teddy laughed too. A bit like Malfoy’s laugh, loud and unselfconscious, a little wild. “Sorry, Uncle Harry! I didn’t mean to,” words lost in another burst of laughter. Harry’s chest went tight and over-warm, something fizzy and bright bubbling inside.
“Look at us,” he said in this thick voice he barely even recognised, “all sorry and silly like that.”
“So silly!” Ted shouted, delighted. “Gran would say we’re being so silly!”
“And what would Uncle Draco say?” with only a touch of self-loathing. Teddy’s smile went big, and he came closer, conspiratorial.
“He would say we’re being absolute gooses about it.”
“Geese,” smiling helplessly. “He’d say we’re being silly geese?”
“Absolute geeses!” shouting, “that we’re—we’re—honking!”
They both roared with it, arm flailing, belly-aching laughter, shouting things like “honk!” and “goose!” and “stop, Ted, oh, god, stop,” flat on the table and laughing. Harry was constantly wiping his eyes, shaking his head, overwhelmed with how tight his chest was, with how much he loved this silly little goose of a kid, who used to be quiet, who still sometimes was. Who was scratched in the same ways Harry had been, and then in different ways altogether. For whom Harry was an adult, was a fixture in a life that wasn’t entirely stable, that was, still, full of warmth and bursts of laughter.
“Hey,” he tapped Teddy’s shoulder, “when he comes in here, what do you think Uncle Draco’s going to say?”
Ted made a serious face, quivering at the edges. “He’ll say, ‘what on earth is happening here!’ and then,” giggling too hard to continue.
“Then?” Harry tried valiantly, covering his own uncontrollable giggles under his hand, “then he’ll—laugh?”
“Honk!” Teddy screamed, and they both lost it, both utterly and helplessly entranced, both, probably, a little bit in love with the image they each conjured of a bemused, sparkly-eyed Malfoy coming in with his arms crossed, with his slanted smile, with his frizzy hair and the piercings all shining in the kitchen’s florescent light. With the questions already on his face and his willingness to partake in any kind of idiocy, of silliness, with how he’d probably only make it worse.
“Honk,” Harry agreed, used his sleeve to wipe some snot, “oh god, Teddy, you’re—” no words to describe it. On the floor, Teddy had begun on what he named his ‘loose goose dance’, which involved mainly elbows and the occasional shriek, and Harry lost it, entirely, perpetually, lost it.
“Teddy!” screaming and joining, flinging his elbows in every direction, belly simmering with it, with how—how silly and light and terrific it all was, everything was, in existence: that he had his godson and his kitchen and his Malfoy and his, this, this terrible, sticky, peanut-butter-smelling moment, this lunacy.
A noise from the door—and there he was, their Malfoy, arms crossed and his face torn between amusement and surprise: “Hello there, Teddington, Harry. What—what on earth is—”
They both cracked with it, sobbing, melting down to the floor: “What,” Teddy, and “on earth,” Harry, lost, both of them lost to it, lost. In the distance, Malfoy was shouting (“what? What? You have to tell me, what?”) and they were all losing their minds, all already have lost.
(From act 2 of Wonder Full on which I'm, yes, still working, promise!)
