'My Roots in the Soil of Alba'  Fionn Maccolla (AKA)Thomas Douglas Macdonald

Fionn MacColla was the pen name of the writer Thomas Douglas MacDonald. He was born and brought up in Montrose, where he became acquainted with Hugh MacDiarmid who edited the 'Montrose Review' from 1919 to 1929, that connection puts him at the cemtre of  the Scottish Renaissance of poets in that period. He was also a founding member of the National Party of Scotland from its birth in 1928. 

MacDonald was brought up as a member of the Plymouth Brethern. He trained as a teacher in Aberdeen and took up his first post at the age of 19, as a headmaster in Wester Ross. In 1926 he went to Palestine, where he taught in the United Free Church's College at Safed. Returning to Scotland in 1929, he turned towards the Catholic faith and studied Gaelic at Glasgow University for a year.

MacColla's best known novels are The Albannach and And the Cock Crew. His strong views on Scottish Presbyterianism were given philosophical expression in his study At the Sign of the Clenced Fist and in his autobiography, Too Long in this Condition. His novels The Ministers and Move Up John were published posthumously in 1979 and 1994 respectively.

The quote is quite straight forward and t’s from his book The Albanach, a more complete line4 of it reads “Alba, Alba, my own country! That’s it there for you......the land of the people of the blood- my fathesr of the thousands of years, over the face of the world  my Roots in the Soil of Alba”  The passage refers to   traditional among Gaelic families to name the father's son after that father's father.

After nearly 20 years living in the Western Isles, Mac Colla returned to Edinburgh, where he died of heart failure in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on 20 July 1975 aged 69.

Reggel elmentem az iskolába, de egyedül voltam, mert Aoi elutazott, Ana nem annyira érezte jól magát, a maradékokról nem tudok, de így megúsztuk a speaking házi előadását. Next time. Órák után csomót nézegettem a térképet, hogy mégis hol lehet az az agency az egyetemen, de nem találtam meg, úgyhogy random elindultam egy bank felé, mert gondoltam csak valahol arra van az a cucc is. Hát, a bank egy full elhagyatott helyen volt, és kábé egy órát bolyongtam, mire meguntam és elindultam a legközelebbi vonatállomásra. A campus tour is hasznos volt, mert legalább volt fogalmam arról, hogy lyukadjak ki ott, ahol nekem jó. Még nem sikerült eltévedni, ami igazán boldogág :D A metrótól is kicsit féltem, mert még nem mentem egyedül és azért elég nagyok az állomások meg kicsit katyvasz nekem az egész metróhálózat meg úgy minden. De túléltem. Ami érdekes volt, hogy például ahol átszálltam a line 2-ről a 4-re, ott nem úgy volt, hogy leszálltam a line2-ről és akkor át kellett menni a line4-hez mozgólépcsőn meg ilyesmi, hanem leszálltam, és a peron másik oldalán a line4 ment. Csak pont a másik irányba, mint ami nekem kellett volna. Úgyhogy föl, le, és ott meg volt a másik irányba a line2 meg a line4. Elég érdekes megoldás. Eljutottam WuChang railway station-ig, aztán láttam táblákat, hogy ticket office, azt követtem és fuu nagyon para volt. Rengeteg ember volt. Kicsit nehezen találtam meg a dolgokat. Kimentem a felszínre, ott volt a ticket office, de baromi sok ember volt. Tényleg. Mindenki vonult a bőröndjével és fuu. Egy ideig álldogáltam, mert azt sem tudtam, melyik sorba álljak be, annyi közül választhattam volna. Találtam egy szimpatikusat, és amúgy egész gyorsan haladt. Amikor ketten voltak előttem, akkor gondoltam, ideje lelépni, de aztán gondoltam, ha már itt vagyok, inkább megkérdezem. A bácsi nem tudott angolul, úgyhogy cseréltek egy nénivel, és akkor vele megbeszéltem a dolgokat, és végül sikerült megvenni és jó volt. Eléggé örültem. Visszafelé meg vettem enni, mert a doupi finom, és a néni meg kérdezgetett tőlem dolgokat. Vicces, hogy megjegyzett. Mondjuk nem, mert valószínűleg nem sok nemkínai vesz nála kaját, én meg azért előfordulok arrafelé viszonylag sűrűn. Olyan háromnegyed négy körül értem vissza, szóval jó hosszú kör volt, és onnantól egész este olvastam, nagyon nagyon sokat. Közben bekopogott a mongol meg a vietnámi szobatáram és az egyik valami műsütit adott, a másik meg olivás arcmaszkot, mert hogy national holiday van. Eléggé meglepődtem, mert őőő. Hát na. Ez nem ajándékozós ünnep. Vagyis nem gondolom annak. De itt Kínában bármi bármikor lehet. Ajándékot meg nem utasítok vissza, szóval gazdagodtam ma is szeretetben. <3
