Entry 13: The One Where the Ashes Blew Towards Us with the Salt Wind from the Sea

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.”

Ah, yes, that ominous opening line from Daphne du Maurier’s novel, “Rebecca.” Have you ever read it? It’s an old book – from 1938, in fact! – but it’s truly a remarkable story, especially for its time. It’s not often you find yourself rooting for the murderer.

Lately, I have found myself becoming more and more frustrated with the fandom. And, no, my annoyance is not from the Sincerely Ignorant teetering on and off the boat every time someone takes a dump on the deck of the USS Lukola – I’m pretty fucking used to that shit – and, honestly, many of our dear Sincerely Ignorant seem to be gaining their sea legs. It’s the Conscientiously Stupid that have struck a chord with me – a disturbing, dissonant chord that leaves me questioning the average level of human intelligence.

My issue with the Conscientiously Stupid is that they push narratives that, when taken collectively, make no goddamn sense. Thanks to The-One-That-Lurks-in-a-Play-Misty-For-Me-Heaping-Pile-of-Discordant-Garbage, I have had the [dis]pleasure of learning about Nicola- and Luke-Adjacent theories. Did you know that the small scrap of green blanket Nicola was sitting on in her August 11 “Drink Your Milk” picture proved that the picture was meant for Jake? You know the guy that, at that point in Fandom History, most people had no clue even existed? I mean, that makes a lot more sense than linking the “Drink Your Milk” shirt Nicola was showcasing to the one Luke was seen wearing on June 22. Now, I’m not saying the shirt belonged to Luke, but if we’re comparing apples to apples, which one of these theories seems more plausible to you?

At this point, you have probably started to realize I enjoy weaving in and out of storytelling mode, mixing fact with theory and speculation. Today, I decided to take a classic novel – surely you didn’t think I made that reference to “Rebecca” for nothing – and loosely intertwine it with some Conscientiously Stupid adjacent theories. This is all in good fun and, like usual, mostly for my own dark humor.

I should probably begin by introducing our book characters. Honestly, you can probably guess which of our shipmates I have assigned to each role fairly quickly.

First, we have our Unnamed Narrator. Seriously, her first name is never revealed.

Second, we have Mrs. Danvers, the obsessive, borderline psychotic housekeeper.

Third, we have Maxim de Winter, our Narrator’s husband.

Fourth, we have Jack Favell, the dodgy and unlikeable cousin.

Lastly, we have our titular character, that darling creature Rebecca.

Now, let’s see who is on the playbill.

ANTONIA AS MRS. DANVERS

It pained me just a little to give the role of Mrs. Danvers to Antonia, primarily because Mrs. Danvers is such a complex character and I’ve always found Antonia to be rather simple. And, no, I’m not insinuating Antonia is simple-minded; I am saying it was never difficult to see through her bullshit (i.e., the phrase, “patterns are patterning,” didn’t come out of thin air). It helped that Mrs. Danvers is one of the main antagonists in the book and almost certainly the GOAT at trolling the heroine of “Rebecca.” I mean, the second Mrs. de Winter didn’t stand a chance with Danny lurking in the background.

The general narrative in Lukola Lore is that Antonia is an online troll. I’ve never been sure as to who her primary target was – Nicola or the Lukola fandom. I tend to believe it originated as Nicola and the Lukola fandom was simply collateral damage. I also cannot say for fact that Antonia was trolling anyone, but I can confirm that the general belief within the fandom that Antonia was trolling is well-documented on social media. For today’s story, we are going to assume the narrative that Antonia was trolling both Nicola and the Lukola fandom. We are also going to assume the USS Lutonia (because I have no fucking clue what the Luke-Antonia ship is called!) was real. Don’t get your feathers fluffed over this. This belief does exist – and it’s why Antonia has been able to fuck with the Lukolas as long as she has – but I promise I have every intention of peppering the side of this ship with holes.

Okay, let’s tow the USS Lutonia out to sea. Don’t forget your Dramamine!

We are living under the umbrella that Luke and Antonia were dating during the World Tour. Poor Antonia was forced into hiding by – who the fuck knows but let’s keep rolling with this narrative – and she wasn’t allowed to be openly seen with Luke or post anything on her social media with Luke. And, Luke mirrored this behavior and made an effort to keep Antonia out of the spotlight (in fact, at the New York City premiere, the average viewer wouldn’t have known Antonia was anything more than Luke’s “friend of a friend”). Antonia, annoyed with this lack of engagement (and, almost certainly fed up with, at a minimum, fans shipping Luke with Nicola), started the pattern of posting pictures of herself and tagging her location as places the fandom knew Luke had recently been. Luke, for his part, made no effort to acknowledge his relationship with Antonia. Instead, he continued his flirtatious relationship with Nicola. After the London premiere, the Lukolas put a target smack dab in the middle of Antonia’s back and blamed her for setting up Papsmear for her own benefit. Luke still made no effort to acknowledge his relationship with Antonia or protect her from the abundance of online hate she received. In fact, he posted his “I will not let [Cressida] ruin our night” story to Instagram instead (see my “Entry 1 – The One About That Weird Ass Cressida Post” if you’re confused by this comment). During post-Papsmear events, Luke did not list her as a plus one and he didn’t like any pictures of Antonia that were not on her grid. In fact, the only evidence directly linking Luke to Antonia were leaked and/or since-deleted pictures and videos not released by Luke. Throughout the summer, Antonia continued her efforts to place herself in proximity to Luke via tagged or easily recognizable locations. Oddly, many of Antonia’s posts seemed to occur shortly after Nicola posted or before/after DeuxMoi posted pap pictures, which gave birth to the “Antonia is trolling” subplot. Still, Luke made no effort to acknowledge his relationship with Antonia. On July 30, Luke was papped with Antonia and his friend group in Sorrento (see my “Entry 11 – The One About the Heart of the Ocean” if you want my opinion about that excursion). This was the last time Luke and Antonia were publicly photographed together. Once Luke returned to London on August 2, Antonia continued her campaign of insinuating she was in the same location as Luke, with the most recent being the Italian restaurant in Rome (which the restauranteur debunked, in my opinion). Again, Luke and Antonia have not been photographed together since July 30. To date, Luke has made no effort to acknowledge his relationship with Antonia, and the only visible interaction by Luke are his likes on Antonia’s semi-monthly Instagram grid posts, which seem obligatory at this point. For the month of November, there was no interaction between Luke and Antonia because Antonia did not post to her grid (gasp!).

Now, for all the Lutonia’s out there, explain to me why this kind of relationship is acceptable to you. Seriously, explain it to me.

Convince me that Luke didn’t shutter Antonia from the moment the USS Lukola schematics were presented to the engineers.

Convince me that Antonia is the kind of woman who would happily accept Luke’s blatant dismissal of her existence while he globe-trotted around the world with a woman he was being openly shipped with by fans, the press, and Bridgerton mates.

Convince me that Luke’s behavior towards Antonia doesn’t make him the worst boyfriend on the planet.

Convince me that Antonia’s online behavior towards Nicola and the Lukola fandom during and after the World Tour doesn’t make her a troll.

Convince me that Luke and Antonia are the definition of “true love.” Actually, before you do that, convince me that Luke and Antonia are currently dating.

Or, maybe you’ve realized that any effort to try to convince me would be a waste of your time because you, too, are starting to find this entire narrative unacceptable. It equates Antonia to someone who doesn’t mind being boxed into a corner and forced to claw her way out, and it likens Luke to an overbearing womanizer who doesn’t give two flips about how online hate may be affecting his partner. I mean, we may as well dump these two into an entirely different book called “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

I didn’t assign the role of Mrs. Danvers to Antonia because I thought Antonia was a feeble coward without her own voice. And, no, I didn’t give her the role because Mrs. Danvers is an obsessive psychopath. I gave Antonia the role of Mrs. Danvers because the fandom handed her the power to influence this narrative on a silver platter, just like the Narrator in “Rebecca” allowed herself to be manipulated by Mrs. Danvers. Moving forward, when you see Antonia with a lit match, all you need to do is lean over and blow it out. Poof! And, she’s gone. Seriously, if you see our version of Mrs. Danvers with anything that might light a fire, take it away from her!

Surely someone out there gets my joke…

LUKE AS MAXIM DE WINTER

Of course, Luke is Maxim de Winter, the outwardly charismatic, but recently widowed anti-hero who caught the affection of our Unnamed Narrator. I mean, he’s a good guy, right? Uhh, yeah, sure… Who doesn’t want to be married to a brooding chauvinist who is outwardly obsessed with the titular character? Wait a minute, that doesn’t sound like Luke at all! Oh, no, actually it does – if you believe the USS Lutonia is real!

For Luke, we are going to assume the same narrative as above – that the USS Lutonia is real, that Antonia trolled Nicola and the Lukola fandom, and that Luke refused to acknowledge his relationship with Antonia. Besides the obvious “Luke is the shittiest fucking boyfriend in the universe,” I have a few other gripes with the USS Lutonia.

Initially, I understood the concept of “keeping Antonia in the dark,” after all I try to be logical when I process information. It was always possible Luke and Nicola were rocking some great PR in the beginning of the World Tour, and that was the only thing they were rocking. In fact, that’s what I initially believed Nicola was doing – being cute but also professional in her interactions with Luke during those early press junkets. Luke, on the other hand, always seemed to wear his heart on his sleeve. Once they hit Australia, it seemed obvious to me that something had changed (go back and read my “Entry 12 – The One Where We Start Laying the Yellow Brick Road to Italy” for a briefing on this). The more I watched Luke and Nicola interact on the World Tour, the more I became convinced Antonia must have been a thing of the past (or possibly nothing) for Luke – until Antonia showed up at Papsmear. At that point, I fully expected Luke to just own up to her. Like, give up on trying to hide Antonia from public view. But, then he pulled that goddamn “Cressida” post (seriously, if you have not read my first entry to this blog, go back and read it!). When you look at the World Tour and subsequent Hot Boy Summer, and the behaviors that were – and were not – on display during that timeframe, you start to develop a completely different view of the USS Lutonia. I mean, I’m not even sure that ship ever left the planning room!

One of the most glaring cosmetic flaws with the USS Lutonia is why “nice guy” Luke would treat Antonia with such indifference if he loved her. When asked who was most like their Bridgerton character, everyone always answered Luke. That he was the kindest, most genuine person. If that’s true, then why did Luke treat his “girlfriend,” Antonia, like she didn’t exist? Again, convince me that Luke’s Public Display of Apathy towards Antonia made him a great boyfriend. Even if Luke was a private person, one would think that after someone he cared about received as much hate as Antonia did after Papsmear, he would have stepped up and taken control of the narrative. He didn’t hesitate to clear up the “cake eating” picture from his September 7 Instagram post (about Nicola), and that “Cressida” post will live rent-free in my mind forever. The only “logical” explanation I can come up with for “nice guy” Luke to shutter Antonia right from the jump is that Antonia is not, and was not, a significant person in his life. That, or he really is a shithead, and he has a team of people lying about what a great guy he is.

We also need to consider Nicola’s interactions with Antonia. First, Nicola has never followed Antonia and Antonia has never followed Nicola, at least not on her public account. But, Nicola followed – and still follows – Luke’s ex, Jade. Now, typically, I’d just be like, “Meh,” on something like this. But, after Papsmear, Nicola could have very easily played the “Diplomat Barbie” and given Antonia a follow on Instagram. But, she didn’t, which signals to me that Nicola wasn’t touching Antonia with an invisible 10-foot pole. Second, if you watch the back-and-forth between Nicola and Antonia on social media – in black and white, pen on paper – you’ll see Nicola playing the cat-and-mouse game right along with Antonia (Nicola just played it a helluva lot better). It even appears Nicola sicced her – what my father calls JVN – “assassin” on Antonia starting around July 20 or, at the very least, she condoned JVN teasing Antonia. If everything was great between Luke and Antonia – and Luke was genuinely happy with Antonia – why would Luke put up with the back-and-forth on social media between Antonia, Nicola, and JVN? Oh, that’s right, because Luke is the corrupt captain of the USS Lutonia. Seriously, if all was well between Luke and Antonia at this point in the timeline, then you’d have to surmise that all was not well between Luke and Nicola. We will get to that in a moment. Right now, aboard the USS Lutonia, Luke is just a lousy boyfriend.

Lastly – and what has always left me scratching my head – why would Luke allow Antonia to troll his fandom? Why allow Antonia to make insinuations online that they’re together but never come to her rescue when the fandom starts flinging shit at her? In my opinion, the InStyle copycat pictures (go read my last blog entry…) were just Antonia getting her feet wet. Why continue to put up with Antonia after allegations began flying that she arranged Papsmear and the Italy pap pictures? I suppose the answer most Lutonias would give is, “Because they’re in love.” With everything I have outlined in this entry, do you honestly get the “in love” vibe from those two? Because I don’t.

Now, why did I draw parallels between Luke and the book character, Maxim? It’s not because I believe Luke to be a male chauvinist so wrapped up in his own drama that he ignores those around him. The USS Lutonia will definitely paint that impression, though! It’s because Maxim’s demeanor was superficial. What the Unnamed Narrator believed was true about her husband was not actually true. And, that’s how I view the USS Lutonia – Luke’s behavior and the narrative surrounding this ship does not match the logic.

JAKE AS JACK FAVELL

Sorry, Jake, you get to be the icky Jack Favell. Yeah, that manipulative, blackmailing creep sleeping with his own cousin! But, hey, that subplot isn’t any more disturbing than Jake being shipped with Nicola, is it?

Alright, let’s jump on board the USS Jakola but not before I preface this section with my father’s flabbergasted words: “This ship is on the bottom of the ocean. These people must have oxygen masks. They’re down there with Jules Verne. This just doesn’t make sense.” No, it really doesn’t make sense but, because I’m here to tell a story, I will begrudgingly dive into the USS Jakola narrative. And, by “dive,” I mean plunge to the bottom of the ocean because that’s where this ship rests.

Just like we did with the USS Lutonia, we are going to assume the USS Jakola is real. The Jakolas believe that Nicola has been seeing Jake since, I guess, the Renegade Nell premiere on or about March 26, 2024. Although, the last I checked Eamon Farren was also at that premiere holding an umbrella for Nicola. I am not confirming Nicola was ever dating Eamon; I am simply saying he was present at the event and holding a fucking umbrella for her. You can make up your own mind about Eamon’s role in Nicola’s life. Regardless, it must have been an instant connection between Nicola and Jake because, if the Jakola narrative is to be believed, they began secretly dating after that. The Jakolas will argue that all the songs Nicola posted to her Instagram stories were for Jake. The Claddagh ring has no traditional meaning when Nicola wears it, and Chaos Week was also for Jake (and a “fuck you” to Luke). The Lukola-coded fan fiction was a “fuck you” to the Lukola fandom (see my “Entry 10 – The One About the Audibly Loud Lukola FanFic”). And, Jake and Nicola are in love and have hard launched their relationship because (a) Jake has been seen wearing Nicola’s bucket hat, (b) they have been seen in public together, and (c) they occasionally hold hands.

I’m not going to lie – for the longest time I didn’t pay any attention to the USS Jakola because it was such an incredibly absurd concept to me. A few weeks back, I posted to my Tumblr account a music video that Jake had done in early 2023. The song is called “Mixed Emotions” by You Me at Six, and the article that came out with the video on February 7th, 2023 stated, “With Jake Dunn who played the protagonist in the video who is actually a friend of mine, we actually spoke a lot about toxic masculinity and his experiences within his sexuality and the impacts it has had on his relationship with his dad.” It honestly never occurred to me the USS Jakola actually had passengers on board until October when the Jakholes went bananas over Nicola holding Jake’s hand. In my opinion – and you do not have to agree with me – the music video speaks for itself as does Jake’s social media presence, whether it be on his own pages or on those of his friend group. I’m sure I’ll get some Jakholes in here crying that we shouldn’t speculate on Jake’s sexuality, but the reality is the only people speculating on Jake’s sexuality are the Jakolas trying to discern whether he’s heterosexual. But, why doesn’t he just come out and say it? I get this question all the time. The answer is quite simple – he doesn’t need to. Jake never buried this part of his life; it’s other people burying it for him. Do you need to blast your sexual preferences out into the universe? I didn’t think so.

For shits and giggles – because that’s what I’m here for – let’s keep going with the story that Nicola and Jake are hot and heavy with each other. I’ll play center field and say Jake is a switch hitter. Happy now? If Jakola is real, then why would Nicola lay all those Lukola-coded breadcrumbs? And, NO, I am not explaining every crumb she’s dumped online. This post is already too damn long. But, Dear Jakolas, don’t tell me those coordinated airplane pictures didn’t have you crying into your pillows. Seriously, though, why would Nicola fuck with the Lukola fandom? I’ve mentioned in previous posts that Polin and Lukola have even been blurred by Netflix & Co. at this point. What would be the point of dragging the Lukolas along only to find out it was Nicola just fucking around? That makes about as much sense as “nice guy” Luke being the shittiest boyfriend on the planet. Again, the narrative does not fit the logic – although you’re welcome to try to convince me that Jakola is real.

For starters, convince me as to why Nicola is Jake’s “type” and not Luke’s. I am not being factitious. I seriously want to know why she’s acceptable for Jake but not Luke. And, if you’re going to tell me it’s because Luke likes brunettes, you better bring me some evidence that Jake likes blonde women.

Convince me that the Claddagh ring has no traditional significance to Nicola and that Jake would be okay with Nicola wearing that Claddagh ring – the one she had made in honor of Bridgerton Season 3, the season she shared with the man that fills her Instagram grid and tags and is the other half of Lukola. If you’re stuck on the significance of this ring, go read “Entry 6 – The One Where I Explained the Claddagh Ring to My Dad.”

Convince me that Nicola and Jake are a couple. And, if you’re going to mention handholding, then convince me that Nicola is not in a relationship with Mark, JVN, Jack R., Golda, Hannah D., Dylan L., or Luke. Oh, and is it true Jake is now dating Ellie Bamber? Convince me he’s not…

Any ways, good luck, babe, trying to sway me into believing Jakola is the real deal because I have a feeling your efforts are going to make your face become as flushed as Jack Favell’s when he was caught with his hand in the till.

NICOLA AS REBECCA

Surely you didn’t think Nicola was going to be the heroine of this story! If you believe the USS Lutonia and USS Jakola are smoothly sailing across the ocean blue, then the only role Nicola could reasonably play is that of the story’s villain – Rebecca. Yes, Rebecca was a bad, bad girl. She was manipulative and intentionally cruel; a Bitch with a capital “B.” She haunted poor Maxim and controlled Mrs. Danvers and Jack like a master puppeteer. She also tortured the Unnamed Narrator from her watery grave.

Seriously, though, let’s turn the tables. Let’s pretend Lutonia and Jakola are real. Starting, say, April 29, Nicola started trolling Antonia by dropping Luke-coded material online and really started ramping up those doe-eyed looks in Luke’s direction. Remember all that cute BTS? Perfectly timed to make it look like Antonia was trolling her when in reality Nicola was trolling Antonia! Unbeknownst to Luke, Nicola commissioned that Claddagh ring and started wearing it to make it look like she was in a relationship with Luke. She even organized a side jaunt over to Galway to introduce Luke to – surprise! – her mother! But, after being rejected by Luke – because he really is in love with Antonia (the USS Lutonia is blasting its horn right about now) – Nicola – YES, Nicola! – set up Papsmear to ruin Luke. I mean, if he wasn’t going to be her boyfriend, he sure as shit wasn’t going to be anyone else’s! All summer Nicola waited for Luke, but he’d gone into hiding, scared to surface because Nicola might find him! After growing tired of waiting for Luke, Nicola got her assassin, JVN, to start trolling Antonia online, that way Nicola could put all her efforts into finding and trolling Luke. She set up Chaos Week. She trolled him on the airplane. But, she needed help (after all she had so many other events and awards shows this summer) so she enlisted her unwitting accomplice, Jake! Jake helped her set up that Lukola FanFic to remind Luke of what could have been. But, nothing was working so Nicola upped the ante and volunteered Jake to be her confused boyfriend. “Luke…Luke…” I can still hear her desperate cries being carried like ashes in the wind…

SEE! I can do it, too – make up total bullshit to fit whatever narrative I please!!!

Yeah, yeah, maybe I went a bit too far (I warned you I had a dark sense of humor) but, honestly, I believe the only way the USS Lutonia and USS Jakola could stay afloat is if Nicola is the villain. She doesn’t even have to be a super villain. She just needs to be disingenuous enough to alienate Luke, terrorize Antonia, manipulate Jake, and mislead an entire fandom. Lucky for her, I don’t believe Nicola to be a real-life Rebecca. If you need an explanation as to why, then you didn't watch the same World Tour as me and you’re clearly on the wrong side of the fandom.

In truth, I believe the real villain to be…

YOU AS THE UNNAMED NARRATOR

Now, now, calm down. I’m not calling you out – at least not individually. I’m calling all of us out.

We as a fandom are the Unnamed Narrators of Lukola, Jakola, and Lutonia. We built these ships, and we control whether they stay afloat.

We took the narrative out of Luke and Nicola’s hands the moment we launched the USS Lutonia. Then we had to go and build the USS Jakola – I guess, because we were bored. No matter how hard Luke and Nicola try to pull the narrative back under their control, we allow side characters to feed us their side of the story! We fill our bellies with their nonsense and then vomit it all over the deck of the USS Lukola.

Seriously, we are the villains in this story. And, collectively, we are one bloody powerful super villain, aren’t we?

We control the narrative. So, if there’s a narrative you don’t agree with – for example, one that doesn’t make sense to you – stop being Conscientiously Stupid and feeding into it.

Remember what I said earlier? If you see Mrs. Danvers with a lit match, blow that fucker out! Otherwise, you’re going to let that bitch burn down the whole goddamn house.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard info compilation Post 4

There is a lot of information coming out right now about DA:TV from many different sources. This post is just an effort to compile as much as I can in one place, in case that helps anyone. Sources for where the information came from have been included. Where I am linking to a social media user’s post, the person is either a dev, a Dragon Age community council member or other person who has had a sneak peek at and played the game. nb, this post is more of a ‘info that came out in snippets from articles and social media posts’ collection rather than a ‘regurgitating the information on the official website or writing out what happened in the trailer/gameplay reveal’ post. The post is broken down into headings on various topics. A few points are repeated under multiple headings where relevant. Where I am speculating without a source, I have clearly demarcated this. if you notice any mistakes in this post, please tell me.

Character Creation

BioWare confirmed that even if you make your Rook a short king, the team has done work to ensure animations fit any character build [source]

Hi! I'm mostly on a fandom break right now and consequently am really slow responding to messages, so I figured I'd post answers to some of the questions I receive the most. :)

When will TLE3 be released?

I don't have an exact date, but it probably won't be in 2025. I am giving myself the space and time to write TLE3 at my own pace and pleasure, and I plan to have a full draft finished before I start publishing on AO3. I promise when it's ready, you'll be the first to know.

Can I print TLE?

Please do not print TLE using any commercial printing service, as this is not legal (at least in the US, which is where I am). If you are printing and binding it yourself solely for personal use and in a manner that is 100% in compliance with copyright law – aka no one at any point in the process can make any money off of it – then I personally am fine with it (and very honored!). However, I cannot give approval for anything that infringes copyright law in any way. Thank you for understanding! I don't want to be sued!

No, sorry. I have the story pretty tightly plotted from beginning until the (very) end, and while I occasionally swerve down new creative alleys, I’m very committed to sticking to my original plan.

Is [super specific spoilery thing] going to happen in TLE?

You are of course welcome to ask, but I am almost certainly going to shout “SPOILERS!” and run away cackling.

You say this is a canon fic but [super specific thing that I don’t agree with] is included. What gives?

For the purposes of TLE, ‘canon’ means the original seven books. Everything else is dressing. I do include as canon a lot of the lore JKR provided in interviews while the books were being published (for example, James being a Chaser), however I tend to view all post-book authorial additions as mostly optional. I do use a fair amount of Pottermore in my story, but I do not keep up with new HP material, so it’s impossible to stay up to date with everything. For example, I tweaked the Animagus process somewhat to my liking as opposed to what is described in Pottermore. This is partly because I already had my version sketched out before that was published, and mostly because I did not like what was given on Pottermore.

I do not consider any of the films canon. If this alleged HBO show happens, I will not consider that canon. Video game? Not canon. I also simply do not know what the words ‘Cursed Child’ mean, as I am pretty sure this is from an alternate timeline in which I do not exist. Tra la la. :)

All of this to say: The seven books are the framework. However, I feel pretty strongly that within that framework there is room for many, many interpretations – particularly with regards to the Marauders era, about which we know so little. Just because my headcanon or characterization is different from yours (or vice versa!) doesn’t make it less canon. Similarly, just because something is not explicitly described in the seven books, doesn’t mean it is against canon for it to have happened in the background, unnoticed by Harry, or before the timeline of the seven books starts. See: Wolfstar.

Yes. There will be wolfstar in the series. I did tag it from day one, please stop sending me shocked and horrified messages! (lol) Because people have such strong feelings about this ship, I always feel the need to give my little disclaimer: There will be wolfstar. Personally, I love it and am excited to write it. However, if you are a fan of exclusively fluffy, happy wolfstar, you might be disappointed. If you are interested in exploring the fraught, occasionally toxic relationship between two angsty, repressed, and deeply traumatized young men during an escalating war…strap in, gird your loins, etc. We're gonna have some fun.

Why do you have two blogs?

Because I'm dumb. Because I didn’t know how tumblr worked when I started this whole nonsense and thought that a side blog sounded like a good idea…aaaaand then pretty much immediately regretted it. This was back before you could reply from a sideblog, so everything was a mess. I'm an archivist at heart, so I can't bring myself to delete @chdarling-tle but I almost exclusively use @chdarling these days. Feel free to only follow that one, unless you only want chapter updates and none of my silly reblogs, in which case @chdarling-tle is here for you. Otherwise it's pretty dead over there.

(ok, confession: this actually isn't a frequently asked question at all, but I shoved it in here anyway because the two blog thing annoys the shit out of me and I wanted to give some context for my disorganization. I meant well, once upon a time!!!)

I’m amazed and flattered that I’ve been asked this enough to include it in an FAQ, but no, I do not. While I am so appreciative that people want to support this project, TLE is a work of fanfiction, created entirely out of and for love, and is in no way a commercial endeavor. I do not make a penny off of this project. I almost certainly lose pennies to this project. But that's okay! Because of the aforementioned love! hi i read your article on fanfiction culture changing and it reminded me of a comment i got on a fic in 2023. (i was going to say this year/recently but then i checked and wow time moves fast) it was phrased like i wasn't ever going to see it. which is weird bc there were only 2 other comments both of which i'd responded to. it was written almost to an audience that did not include me. idk what that says about the "culture" but i enjoyed your article!

That's super interesting, and definitely relates to this broader ~thing~ imo. My first thought is about the (significant?) rise in people putting fic reviews on Goodreads. That's definitely part of the overall context collapse—and deeply annoys me!!—but it does make me think about the concrit conversation, and how fandom post-LJ has largely shut down critical discussion of fic, which was not a rarity back in the day. (I'm not opening that can of worms now lol.) Like, I have sympathy for the Discord fic book clubs, because you should be allowed to say whatever you want about a fic in private! But I feel like that needs to be just one component, especially if you have a lot of positive things to say about a work.

Funnily, I got a comment somewhat recently that felt, at least in one bit, like it was addressed more to the world than to me. It was a really nice comment! But I showed it to a friend in my confusion (and then just replied like it hadn't struck me as odd). I've also received comments in the last few years on older stories in which the commenter acts like I've long departed from my fandom—when I've published new works as recently as a few weeks prior, and post on my (linked from my AO3 profile) tumblr daily. Which seems related, too—like, me, the fan, is still right there, very easy to see?

I do think there's something to be said about depersonalization across social media, and the way people collapse "content creators" with their "content" (to be clear, I'm not calling fic writers or fic either of these things, but part of this whole situation is that a lot of readers are thinking of them that way). Like, the creator economy is structured to encourage people do that, even. And of course there's great commentary here on tumblr dot com and elsewhere about how people talk to strangers in ways they'd never dare to in real life. I mean, the digital disconnect led to plenty of...issues...back in the day, even when fandom and fanfic weren't as bifurcated as right now.

Anyway, I think this is all swirling together...and like, it's not great! (Haha this is like how I ended the article. "This sucks! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯") But thanks again for your message—this topic has so many interesting, if depressing, facets!!

need a maximized sensory feedback experience? StimuWrite 2 is a free text editor that includes word count goals, social media type feedback emojis, background audio, typing audio, and video backgrounds. There are also sticky note and timer programs available to go with it!

need absolutely minimal feedback? FocusWriter is an older, free program that is just text on a background, no bells or whistles.

buzzdraft is a free text editor that has keyboard audio and word count features, as well as a pressure timer to remind you to keep writing if your activity pauses for too long

WriteRush is a free text editor that has a browser version

FlowWriter is a free text editor for focusing, but I haven't downloaded this one yet

bit of a ramble below! tl:dr; i have insane person problems and realised that this blog isn't healthy for me so won't be coming back until i'm in a better place, i have no intent on deleting it but may password protect it in the coming days for my own peace of mind :P love yall!

the absolute basics on my situation is that i almost certainly have OCD, have been vocal about this likelihood in the past, and while i was aware i was susceptible to obsessions and compulsions irt online interactions and my posts on here i was not actually aware of how debilitating the effect this was having on my life was until i went completely cold turkey and blocked tumblr from all my devices. like genuinely night and day. i have so much more free time when i'm not spending it constantly name searching on every platform available and scrolling through my blog over and over to be sure that i didn't post a slur by accident lol. i'd rather not get into some of the stupider details of shit ive done in the name of perceived moral purity because that's nobody's business but trust me when i say it was like a weight got lifted off my fucking shoulders lol like i was having regular delusions about making a post so bad grian himself would say i should kill myself on stream and believing it was possible 😭 really good disorder guys i love having this

i have a lot to say about the way this community treats each other, both good and bad, but i think i'd rather hold off and make more informed and thought out posts on that when i'm not still reeling from all the bullshit life's been throwing at me. i do love and value this community so much, especially all the mutuals and friends i've made here. i've also been made extremely uncomfortable in the past by the easiness that people slip into very strange relationships not just with CCs but with their fellow bloggers. including me ! and i am a relatively small blogger in the vast scheme of things. this is no hate to anyone who's sent an anon or whatever, many of you are lovely people, but it's also like, well i have been literally stalked on this blog before so i feel i have justification for being a tad uncomfortable . again, a lot to be said on the celebritification of average people and the obsession on making sure one makes "Objectively Correct" choices when doing something as simple as watching a minecraft series and having opinions on it .. but alas, no brain for it right now, and also i would rather not risk the ire of twitter teenager #48 lest i be qrted by thumbnail artists telling me to lighten up and accept the steady decay of all that is good in this sphere in order to make room for more #Content. I've been thinking about the part in your latest fic where Marius responds to Daniel's dig about not fucking Armand by saying that Daniel wishes he hadn't.

How do you think Daniel felt looking back on his time with Armand by that point?

WE TALKED ABOUT THIS A BIT ON DISCORD BUT I WANT TO REALLY LIKE PARK IT HERE AND MARINATE IN MY FEELINGS OKAY??????

Before anything else I want to say that in this fic, they’re both just kinda throwing barbs at each other and picking a fight to feel something, and neither of them 100% mean it as much as they just know how to push buttons and pick at each other’s insecurities. So like, on that note, I want to state for the record that Daniel DOESN’T wish he hadn’t, but that Marius is still picking at some really complicated feelings.

[This is going to be really long, I’m sorry!]

I think like we (fandom) get kinda swept away in the silliness & romance of the Devil’s Minion and we don’t talk enough (FOR ME!) about how dark and fucked up it was. I just think it’s worth reminding everyone now and then that the Devil’s Minion chapter is a story about stalking and coercion and substance abuse—they MEET via Armand abducting Daniel and keeping him captive in a pitch black room for days and letting him starve. And to me, that’s part of the charm LMAO but I just feel like I wanna park that idea here in case anyone has forgotten.

So like, I want to think about Daniel Molloy as a 20 year old who was abducted, locked up, and starved by a vampire LMAO, and how the 40 years following that is a roller coaster of trauma and recovery.

And like, okay, insofar as I’m half talking about my own fic that was built with my own headcanons, I think it’s worth asking about Daniel’s life experience as a 20 year old. (I wanna drop this link here because I talked about it once in terms of his sexual experience LOL). Like, we know almost nothing canonically about Daniel’s background, and while that works really great for writing fic and headcanons and is FREE REAL ESTATE BABY, I think we really have to just keep asking like, how much experience does a 20 year old have?

Because I think it’s entirely possible that he never had a serious relationship before? Even if he had, is it relative to being 20 years old? How do we feel about the “serious relationships” we have when we’re that age?

I talked about this in the post I linked about his sexual experience so I don’t want to repeat too much, but we have to realize also that his life effectively STOPPED after the interview. He was on the run, he wasn’t dating lol. He did NOT have a social life. When he stopped running, it was to be with Armand. So what I’m kinda trying to say here is that I think it’s plausible that Armand was his only serious relationship, and that also means that it’s his first serious breakup.

(And while this is like, getting into headcanon territory since the canon is so vague, I will say for the record that it aligns with my ficverse, that almost all of my VC fics take place on the same timeline, so this is at least the truth in this story and it’s the truth of Daniel in all my stories.)

This is something else where, as much as I hate building meta around FANDOM, I want to also take a moment to remind everyone that they broke up lmao. They did! That happened! Fandom gets so swept up in the idea of endgames and whatnot and it's like. THEY BROKE UP LOL. Like yeah yeah that’s what fanfic is for etc etc etc do whatever but like, canonically speaking, Armand never wanted to turn another because he knew that it would inevitably lead to resentment, that makers & fledglings get sick of each and hate each other, that’s what happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(I like to think that Armand was doomed with his self fulfilling prophecy and the trope of I didn’t have a good dad so I can’t be a good dad so he didn’t even try and I’d like to believe in the post-canon ether that they can work something out lol but this is like, the canon, this is what happened. They broke up!!!!!!!!! Daniel got what he wanted and bounced!)

It's also by then the dissolution of an ongoing period of trauma and abuse that has been going on for at least 1/3 of Daniel's life, depending what year they actually made it to, and VC is a series that is often about messy grief, trauma, and grieving abusers.

So the Vamptember/looking in the dark from below collection of fics wasn’t planned or anything, they’re nonlinear little oneshots about different moments and aspects of Marius & Daniel’s relationship. And it’s just a place for me to park all these thoughts I have about them!!!!!!

But thinking about like, Daniel’s life being ruined by vampire -> being turned during a really chaotic Vampire World Event -> BREAKING UP WITH HIS MAKER! -> (???? radio silence in the 1990s) -> Having ND timeout at Marius’s house -> RECOVERING AND BEING IN A REALTIONSHIP WITH HIS MAKER’S MAKER…

It’s just such a complicated thing to look at, you know? In a very basic, easy-to-understand-for-us-mere-mortals way, the easiest way to think about it is that Daniel is recovering from a HORRIFIC breakup, but it’s also the trauma from like, the Everything. And also going from the nonstop Devil’s Minion chaos to like, just having to live as a vampire, and having to live as a vampire on his OWN?

I really really love thinking about this aspect of like the Trondheim & Beyond era because like, we’ve all kinda debated what does Daniel’s “madness” actually entail, like, what is the vampire neurotype yatta yatta, is he just overstimulated and needs a quiet break, can a vampire truly be “mad”, are some people just not fit for the Blood, whatever. But we DO see him recover! And Marius has a hand in the recovery! And I am just absolutely feral climbing the walls thinking about Marius’s feelings about the entire thing.

Because like, Marius has to look at it and think “Good lord Armand fucked this up” and I don’t think it’s possible to pin that on Armand without also accepting that Marius also fucked up with Armand ! And I’m so interested in thinking about how family patterns manifest in vampires—like I’ve written a little bit about if epigenetic trauma can exist inside the bloodline, but it’s also the lessons everyone learns from their makers, and how it informs what type of maker they then become.

I read a really interesting post from @theatlasofclouds the other day about Marius’s particular flavor of toxic empathy, too—the way he does what he thinks is best and what he thinks people needs, without understanding that he doesn’t KNOW what other people need, or that other people don’t operate the way he does, that they have different belief systems and emotional languages. And I tend to think of Marius as a dad-type Fixer—he wants to help people and guide people and wants to be respected as a leader/mentor/teacher.

We don’t have an answer of how or why Daniel wound up with him, but it’s impossible for me to ignore this elephant in the room, that Marius would see Daniel’s predicament as an extension of his own failures!!!!!!!!! Marius has that type of egotism, too, that he’ll feel responsible even if it’s not strictly his own fault!

I like thinking about Marius feeling responsible to fix it and clean it up, even if he's not sure what he's doing, even if he's doing it badly. I always try to approach Marius this way when I write him, so I've tried to make that kinda clear in the fics, too. He doesn't always know the best way to fix something, but he's gonna try anyway. He worships at the altar of his own reason, and doesn't know how to be wrong. (Gosh I know I wrote a big meta about Marius's ego as a defense mechanism but I can't find it lol but TLDR he has to believe in himself because it's the only way to make sense of immortality and any time he's proven wrong or makes a mistake it's a devastating wound to his entire sense of reality.)

It just makes me wonder how Daniel wound up with him, since we never got a complete answer. We know that he turned B+S, and then by the beginning of B&G he's ashamed of something that happened recently, and he thinks everyone's mad at him. Like, is it fair to assume he took in Daniel as a ways to make amends? Does he see Armand's handling of Daniel as a massive fuckup, and does he want to try to help? Does Daniel see that it's also a massive fuckup?

This fic series is really a space for me to daydream about all these angles because I think that these are some REALLY rich relationships, and their space in canon is largely off screen subtext. Like, none of this is really spelled out, but how do we NOT ask these questions?

And I’ve made it like 1500 words into this answer by splitting off into all these different directions, but to focus and bring it back to your question: IT’S COMPLICATED MAN.

I think SO MUCH about the line from TVA “I was no Marius to [Daniel] afterwards.” I think so much about how we don’t have any proof that Marius ever told Armand about his life. As far as we can tell, Armand never told Daniel about HIS life. By this point in the canon timeline, they will have READ it in books!! HAVE THEY EVER JUST TALKED TO EACH OTHER IDK?

Like how do they each FEEL reading that in TVA?! How does anybody begin to make up for it?

I also was so excited that you picked up on this in your AO3 comment on the chapter: “And then the way they trade barbs, I love when characters know each others perfect weak points to attack, and for both of them of course Armand is a huge sore spot that they share” – YES exactly!

There’s a lot to juggle here between like, Marius’s anger issues & trying not to be an angry person vs Daniel who is so very much like Marius in some really meaningful ways, how they might be weird mirrors of each other who sorta saved each other, how they might both operate on some similar wavelengths. I imagined them as the type of couple who doesn’t say I LOVE YOU or get vulnerable until they can push each other into an argument to admit it. In my mind, the chapter ending on “I love you, too” was the first time they’ve said it in that way, and Daniel clocks Marius’s difficulty in apologizing as a HUGE effort that expresses love.

But they’re basically picking a fight to feel something! They’re both saying shit they don’t 100% mean! Daniel’s history with Armand is extremely complicated and Marius knows it! Marius even feels complicit in it!

There’s this thing I really love in fics, I’ve only seen it a couple times so I’m not sure if everyone considers it a proper trope the way I personally do LOL, but I realllllllly love, not when a character loses their virginity, but when they lose their virginity in a disappointing way and then fuck a new person and think “I should’ve saved it for you” asdgjklasdghjkl LORD!!!!!!!!

I just have to wonder if there times where things were gentle and nice and Daniel thought “I wish Marius had been my maker” or other such sentiments. Imagine going from chaotic stalker Armand to calm daddy Marius, you know??????????

It would be natural to think that, and wonder what it would’ve been like, and it’s something I’ve tried to hint at in this series. And it doesn’t have to mean like, that Daniel completely regrets how he was turned or sincerely wishes that it had been Marius, but whomst among us have not looked back at traumatic experiences and wondered what our lives would look like if things had been different for us?

The good news is that I think there’s hope for these fools!!!!!!!!

Like, I am thinking about an arc of Daniel’s Horrific Breakup & Trauma Recovery, where things will settle down and he’ll feel stable and okay and the past won’t be such an open wound anymore. I think it’s also reasonable within the logic of VC that all roads lead to forgiveness and that time heals. He will eventually be okay and feel like, I’m glad it worked out this way, I’m glad Marius can be my companion and not my maker, everything lead us here and it worked out.

And I think like, Daniel & Marius have such a huge shared wound concerning Armand and I like to think that Daniel might be a huge key in everyone kinda figuring it out.

WHAT DO MARIUS & DANIEL SEE IN EACH OTHER’S BLOOD? HOW DOES IT CHANGE THE WAY THEY THINK ABOUT ARMAND? MARIUS SEEING HIM IN AS A DOMINEERING PREDATOR, DANIEL SEEING HIM AS A VULNERABLE HUMAN???

Armand absolutely HAUNTS these two ! And it’s clear to me that they want so desperately to forgive each other and have something again !!!!!!!!!! Vampires are fools for that kind of thing, they mourn time periods and places and relationships! They become (or stay) vampires because they fear death ! They fear mourning !!! They fear loss !!!!

So again sorry we’re now 2300 words into this and I’m still rambling but again to answer the question, How do you think Daniel felt looking back on his time with Armand by that point? *by this point* I think, he’s sorta okay, but it’s still kinda sore. He’s getting there!

My stories I create (the main one at least) contains dark themes (such as assault, child abuse, drug use, celebrity exploitation and suicide - this is not written for weirdos, it's ment to be perceived in a realistic manner) it is highly centered around crimes, especially ones common in big cities, so expect to hear / see that. it also contains harsh language (some slurs) and graphic depictions of violence. There is no direct smut (drawn or written) in any of my stories, but it is talked about or implied, only really jokes and suggestive situations.

I have a lot of representation of different lives, traumas, and just people in general. I have communities specifically for Information on my main story (DM me for link or search ★Brocade★ and try to find it!.

It's an action thriller and sometimes comedy. It features two main characters named Mike and Phillip, from very separate worlds. Mike is a 19 yr old college student fresh out of foster care who works as a waiter, and Phillip is a 24 year old nation famous Chinese model. The story is about how they destroy a crime organization after finding out their lives heavily tied to the organization and one another. They struggle between their similarities, differences, and feelings for one another. More about this on my blog and community.

I have about five oc stories in total and four of them are in the same universe. And two of them are fantasy stories in separate universes.

Stories:

★Brocade★

Features Mike and Phillip, it's one of the more progressed stories with few blank plot holes. Story with the most developed characters and character backstories. This story takes place in Las Angeles California 2018-2019 (not including flashbacks, flashbacks go as far back as 1994). Mostly an action thriller with partial comedy. This i guess you could say had some mlm romance (though it's one sided and they become good close friends)

Delirium

This story features two men named Mathew and Richard. And a boy (12-14) named Elijah (Eli). This story is in the same universe as brocade but years before. It takes place in 2014-2017. This one is pretty graphic when it comes to gore and death, it's a horror / thriller with very little comedy. In the backstory is had a little bit of mlw/wlm romance.

Peters story (no title yet)

Features many characters, Albert and Billy are the antagonists, Peter is the protagonist, penny is his niece and also featured a flat character named Emery. Also tied to the first two stories. Takes place in 2008-20010. It's a horror / thriller, with little comedy. By far one of the most disturbing stories I've created. It lays heavily on realistic depictions of a serial killer. Absolutely zero romance in this one.

Aroras story

This story is about how the rest of them got started. It features an orphan girl who called herself Aron, though her name is arora. She is the protagonist and a German aristocrat named Nathaniel is the antagonist. This story takes place in 1885-1896. It's an action thriller with little comedy and some wlw romance (but not much)

Lunden and Realles story

This is a fantasy, not tied to the rest of the story. The protagonists are the god of grief Lunden and the god of corruption Realle who are lovers. The antagonist is the god of knowlage Anuva and an enemy I have not yet named lol. It's a fantasy action and drama?? And ofc some mlm romance. but it's mostly about humanity and war and power

Zeniths story

Another fantasy story, very different from the other one. This one goes for a more realistic fantasy (if that makes sense) the protagonist is the child of the sun god Zenith and the antagonist is the moon gods mortal body (no name for her yet) this story has the largest main cast. The story can be labeled as a horror in some parts,but I'd say it's mostly a fantasy action with some mlw/wlm romance though it's a more about war, cults and sacrifices.
