This morning, a dear friend asked me this: "Isnt canon Jason supposed to be ugly? Whats up with artist making him so unworldly beautiful???"

As the good, nerdy, geeky, totally not obsessed friend I am... I sent her a whole rant <3

SO, I'll try to make it a bit shorter:

First off, I have absolutely no idea where the whole "Jason Todd is canonically ugly" thing is from. It might be because of the art style in some comics? Cause, ya know... Why does he often look like a 30 y.o.? I understand the stress and all but man💔...

Anyways... This guy canonically looks like Dick Grayson. How? I wonder that too, but he does. And we all know Dick Grayson is this very attractive pretty boy who was a model and a stripper once. If they do look alike, either Jason is beautiful too or it's Dick who's actually ugly too, lol.

Jason Todd is a pretty boy.

Again, I have no idea where the whole "he's canonically ugly" thing is from. Maybe they mentioned something in a comic I've either missed or forgot about, but from what I know, there was never a comic explicitly calling him ugly. (Unless, again, I forgot about it. Maybe my brain is trying to remove the trauma)

But genuinely this guy looks like Dick, who looks like Bruce, and Bruce looks like Clark, and Kon is Clark's clone, those guys are a copy paste and all attractive😭

Honestly? It if was said in canon, I believe it means something else. Like, not ugly as in "his face is meh". Something like, ugly inside? We have this say where I'm from, where telling someone they're ugly doesn't necessarily meant on the outside. It could be the most handsome man alive, but twisted inside in a bad way. So "you're an ugly person" = "you're a very bad person inside, who does a lot of bad things" get what I mean? And, as we all know, some writers tries to make us believe he's the worst human being ever. So I wouldn't be surprised...

If not this, it must be a fanon thing. The Jason haters who spreads rumors around.

If you're new on this blog, hi! I'm Juliette and I mostly talk about Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon, favorite characters and ship together. Being a Barbara Gordon fan especially I can tell you this: Many things you hear about her and how bad she is are from other universes, taken out of context, bad writing or misunderstood. Sure she did some... Interesting choices, but I've heard things that makes you wonder where did they pull that out. Her haters spreads the rumors around, people share, and other people believes it and share, and bam. She's horrible. For something out of context. I told my friend that this could be the case, too.

If you hate the character, you'll probably skip all the stuff about them. So imagine this: I'm a Jason hater, he's bad, he should have stayed dead and he's ugly. I make this post saying he's canonically ugly, no context, and if there are "proof" maybe those are also out of context. I post it, and another hater who never read much about the character shares it. Then another, then another... Without knowing that it's not true at all. New fans might read it and, seeing how popular of a thing it is, blindly believe it, because it's popular and a "known" fact.

Surprisingly, the "he's canonically ugly" thing is actually popular? It's not my first time hearing it, it's not the first time friends who are getting into the character ask me about it. Who needs proof to share it at this point? It's already well known, it must be true, right?

So my theories are these: It's either a misunderstanding because of the artists, or haters spreading rumors (very possible it's both.)

But canonically ugly? Nah. Not even inside, unlike they want you to believe. I mean sure, he did bad things, but he's no monster.

The only canon thing about Jason's look that we know is: He looks like Dick. And Dick is hot.

Conclusion: Jason is canonically hot.

That’s a toughie… no! It wasn’t! If they’re too stubborn and don’t wanna compromise, then they aren’t a good match! Simple. Mizumachi was willing to compromise on some things and agree to disagree, but there did exist things that he wouldn’t budge on because he felt strongly on them from a moral standpoint. If his partner would continue to be stubborn about something that bothered him enough to speak on it- that would be an issue.

“I guess it’s cool to want to dream high and whatever, but knowing how to be realistic is also important. Life aint ideal, yanno?”

You had to learn to accept that you’d never find a perfect 100% ideal match, and that’s okay. He could somewhat understand the height thing to a degree, but he couldn’t fathom the mindset of not accepting anyone who was beneath six feet, as if it were commonplace- which it wasn’t. Finding people that tall was already a rarity, so reducing your options so drastically to begin with couldn’t make dating easy.

“I can get wanting tall kids though. Gotta save the short descendants who can’t reach the shelves. Need a tall partner for that.”

Of course, being too tall came with it’s own problems, like always needing to duck under doorways of Japan.

“Damn, that’s scary to think of, your personality changing because of brain damage. Mn? Me? Nhaa~ I got a hard head! We linemen especially have hard heads!”

He playfully knocks on his head with his fist. As a footballer, you encounter head-on collisions all the time! Helmets really are the GOAT, yanno? Of course, he wasn’t saying that Quarterbacks or running backs didn’t have to worry about head injuries, but it was very common for the linemen to bump heads.

Ah? But wait?

“Wonder if that’s what happened to some of our guys. Maybe the quarterbacks got hit in the head too many times.”

A lot of them were weird or they had really intense personalities, and that was saying something coming from him.

“I’d almost believe it for Agon, but I also doubt he’d get brain injuries. He’s got god-like reflexes.”

He’s so… different when compared to his brother that you’d have to believe that there was something fundamentally different about him like a brain injury causing him to have a violent God-complex. Hm? Was he holding a grudge over his shoulder dislocation? Nah, he deserved that one. The dude really didn’t have to prevent Kurita from joining Shinryuji when he didn’t have to. The guy proved himself! The Naga’s really missed out!

"We all wondered if he'd actually killed someone before."

The dude's temper was that crazy that you'd believe it. What was it? Who hasn't heard of the goons Agon would beat up on the streets just because they looked at him funny?

    "That's assuming the other person is open-minded enough to compromise, of course," Vivian points out, for when it came down to do it, there were individuals who were so stubborn and stuck in their own ways, they would immediately rule out a person who doesn't fit all their personal standards... something she herself was unable to relate to, because it wasn't as if she cared whether or not her potential partner had lackluster flaws and habits so long as they were still a good person at heart. Besides, it wasn't like she herself was perfect either.

    "I mean, me personally... I'm not so strict, but I cannot say the same about everyone else. Like, some refuse to quote on quote, 'settle', and would consider certain stuff as deal breakers, sadly enough." Of course, upon uttering the word 'settle', Vivian then proceeds to make air quotes with her fingers before letting her hands fall back down along her side. "In fact, I'm pretty sure there are girls out there, who to this day, will not date men beneath six feet for example," she adds, because if love happened to be so cut and dry, there would certainly be no rejections or breakups throughout the course of history.

    "As for whether or not I'd leave someone if their looks changed... probably not? After all, the feelings of love just don't easily go away even once your partner gets old or they dye their hair a colour you don't like," Vivian goes on to ruminate. Of course, she might not have sex with them or be attracted to them anymore, but romantic attraction was not the same as sexual attraction; therefore, she could totally see herself staying with a partner that became deformed from an accident as long as their personality still remains intact.

    "And now that you mention 'trauma'... welp, I do recall there being past instances of peoples' personality doing a complete 180 once they experienced brain damage," came her eventual pondering. Sure enough, she'll soon pause while pensively furrowing her brows. "It's... I believe, the specific part of the brain that controls one's social behaviour that needs to be impacted? Either way, I do sincerely hope you or nobody you know would end up having a head collision so intense, they're no longer the same person afterwards."

From Wuthering Heights to Velaris: Critiquing Idealized Obsession

Inspired in part by this post from @bluiela, I got to thinking about the comparisons between Wuthering Heights and what we’re seeing surrounding the Elain/Azriel moments in ACOTAR . . . particularly reader responses or misinterpretations to both these texts, framed in part by my personal experiences as a high school English teacher.

It wasn’t until about a decade ago, when I first taught Wuthering Heights to a group of high school juniors, that I realized how often (and with great passion) the relationship of Cathy and Heathcliff is perceived as a swoon-worthy romance.  Imagine a fairly young high school teacher trying to navigate those waters for the first time, lol. 🤣

But I’ve been realizing lately that a lot of the arguments I see supporting the Elain/Azriel dynamic transport me directly to my classroom when I’m in the middle of my Wuthering Heights novel unit.  

Now . . . before I go any further and someone misinterprets the comparisons I’m trying to make, I want to make this clear: I am not calling those who support Elain/Azriel juvenile.  At all.  And, I’m also not saying that teenagers are incapable of interpreting a classic novel.  Of course they are capable of it; I witness it all the time . . . So, just like my classroom management policy, I’m going to set the expectations now that I’m not going to tolerate any willful misunderstandings of what I’m trying to say in this post.  

OK.

Having said all of that, I now have to be honest that there is something about the teenage brain that often (not always) goes a bit haywire with Wuthering Heights.  And, it has really been a wild ride for me to see many of the arguments used in my classroom in defense of Cathy/Heathcliff also applied online in support of Elain/Azriel.

At its core, I think what’s happening in relation to both texts in these examples, is that readers are conflating emotional intensity with romantic fulfillment.  In both cases, the relationships in question are characterized not by mutual growth or emotional reciprocity, but by superficial longing, silence, and projection.  

While I think the intent behind these two pairings is different (Cathy/Heathcliff are intended to appear as a profound love, while Elain/Azriel are intended--in my opinion--as a red herring), I believe their purpose can be viewed similarly: and that purpose is that both narratives are working to critique these romantic pairings. We are meant to be critical of this type of romantic idealization.

So in the same way that I am seeing similar arguments to defend Cathy/Heathcliff and Elain/Azriel, I think we are also meant to have the same takeaway for both: idealized obsession (disguised as love) is unhealthy and destructive.

Tragic Doesn’t Mean True Love

Okay, so I’m not going to take the time to do a full literary analysis of Wuthering Heights juxtaposed with ACOTAR, but there are some things I do want to make clear.  And at the top of the list is this:

Emily Brontë was writing a Gothic novel that was meant to be somewhat *Romantic* (as in, of the Romanticism literary movement)--not romantic in how we think of courtship and love.  And, ultimately as a Romantic and Gothic novel, the story between Cathy/Heathcliff is filled with tragic situations and is not meant to be envied.  It explores what happens when two people mistake shared pain for soul-compatability.  

Heathcliff doesn’t love Cathy in a way that nurtures her or understands her.  He wants to possess her.

Additionally, Cathy doesn’t really love him either--not in a way that ever brings Heathcliff peace.  She also comes to rely on him to the point of losing a sense of self.

**okay,  are we seeing it a bit now?**

I know that a framing exists for Elain/Azriel that is soft, or leans into the quiet girl x brooding spy dynamic.  But these moments are misleading symbols of genuine connection when examined within their full context.  There is no real emotional foundation between them--just silence, superficial attraction, and seeing a “fix” to each of their problems in the other. 

Azriel feels he is owed Elain as the “the third” (ouch), and doesn’t truly nurture or understand her.  And Elain (unable or unwilling to address Lucien and the mating bond) is using Azriel as a crutch to further that avoidance, and certainly doesn’t seem to bring Azriel much peace if his self-loathing while with her is any indication.  

Intensity is not the same as intimacy.  And yearning does not equal love.

There’s a Problem with Projection

I’ve been in fandoms a long time.  Most notably, I grew up a Star Wars kid during the drought between the original trilogy and the prequels.  I’ve seen the fandom change a lot over the years (unfortunately, mostly in negative ways), and made space for other fandoms as I got older.  But, I have learned over the years that one of the most common traps in fandom is projection.

It's easy to fall in love with a character . . . or, better yet, an idea of a character.  Then, fans try to build things around that character.  This can allow for a lot of creative outlets and fan bonding in positive ways.  But, it can also run the risk of projection--where it’s not about the canon anymore; instead, it’s about what fans want to see instead.

And, admittedly, I’ve seen a lot of this the last few years in the ACOTAR fandom around Elain/Azriel, and this is where I often find myself transported to my English classroom as similar arguments or interpretations manifest.

For example, readers often cite the necklace and the near-kiss as proof of some deeper bond between Elain and Azriel.  But gifts are not conversations.  Near-kisses are not commitments.  The text has given us very little substance as it pertains to this pairing (over multiple books, mind you).  There are no scenes of true vulnerability, shared values, emotional growth, or even basic understanding of one another.

And yet, some still insist that this is the love story.

It’s exactly what I see when students latch on to the Wuthering Heights line:

 “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.” 

They pin it to moodboard assignments and quote it with fervor.  Because it sounds LOVELY, doesn’t it?  I agree, it does!  On its own, it’s a beautiful sentiment of love.  Just like, on its own, the sentiment of a necklace and near-kiss is lovely.  And how sitting with someone quietly can be beautiful.  

But canon exists.  Context exists.  You cannot just view these things on their own--you have to take into consideration everything else that lives and breathes around it.

That quoted line above, once you envelop it with context, actually represents obsession.  Not partnership.  Cathy and Heathcliff do not make each other better.  They also do not listen, grow, or care for one another in any nurturing way.  But their aesthetic--wild moors, charged glances, violent declarations--that all gets mistaken for proof of destiny.

The Real Love Story is Often Quieter

I feel like I’ve already rambled on for long enough, and I’m not going to dive too deep into this part . . . but I did want to take a second to just point it out.

Wuthering Heights DOES give us a love story.  But, it’s just not the one that people quote on social media.  The dual storyline of the novel gives us Cathy Linton and Hareton Earnshaw.  They are the product of all the pain that came before them, but they choose something different and break the destructive cycle.  Their story is awkward and it seems like old patterns will continue at first . . . but it ultimately becomes a story of healing and marked by growth.  It is generally seen as a positive contrast to the obsessive and tumultuous relationship of Cathy/Heathcliff (all the Cathy’s get confusing, I know).  

In the end, it is a quieter story.

And I know I risk sounding a little presumptuous in making the comparison, but the foundation of Azriel and Gwyn’s story is very much rooted in quiet deliberateness.  I mean, not only do their interactions show us this, but the end of Azriel’s bonus chapter tells us this:

“Something sparked in Azriel’s chest, but he only nodded his thanks and left.  He could picture it, though, as he ascended the stairs back to the House proper.  How Gwyn’s teal eyes might light upon seeing the necklace.  For whatever reason . . . he could see it. But Azriel tucked away the thought, consciously erasing the slight smile it brought to his face.  Buried the image down deep, where it glowed quietly.   A thing of secret, lovely beauty.”

I’ve written about this extensively, but SJM isn’t subtle here.  Just like Brontë uses Cathy Linton/Hareton to show that love rooted in healing and growth matters more than love rooted in pain, SJM also seems to be pushing readers toward a similar understanding.  You just have to be willing to stop looking for fireworks long enough to see the steady glow of a lantern . . . or a spark in a chest, tucked away to keep safe.

OH OF ALL THE FANFICS WIPS I'M

A Bingyuan slightly inspired by Red, White and Royal Blue ;3

Basically where Shen Yuan, son of Qijiu (born in the PIDW universe — no transmigration... although there is some reincarnation without exact memories involved), is sent to the Moshang wedding as a representative of CQMS (Shen Jiu and his +1 husband Yue Qingyuan wasn't invited because... Aha. Binghe was sent to the Abyss by his Shizun. Irreparable differences and doesn't want him around :B)

And Shen Yuan is definitely like, ah, great. He has to do anything to avoid screwing up, and it's not exceptionally difficult! Or it shouldn't be, but, he's fed up—and accidentally gets VERY drunk on demon wine. Which ends up making him practically fall into the arms of Luo Binghe, who sees him very drunk and wanting to be "taken to a quiet place" by a demon who runs away as soon as Luo Binghe approaches.

Shen Yuan, on top of being drunk, is quite scared. That is to say... Well. His father has a scars on his arms that HE SWEARS is nothing, but it wasn't there before he met privately with Luo Binghe after his accession to the demon throne and just before signing the peace arrangements.

The last time he saw Luo Binghe, he was a young disciple, his Luo-shidi, A-Luo when they sneaked out on night hunts to observe monsters in their natural habitats and collect plants for his pressed flower books. But... Now, he's a Demon Emperor. Shen Yuan is a little intimidated.

In the end, it is Luo Binghe who gets him out of the wedding before he passes out from drunkenness. Shen Yuan wakes up fully clothed (without boots) in the emperor's chambers the next day... And basically runs away!!

Well, he hasn't embarrassed his parents or the cult. Just himself.

Except for the fact that, apparently, there is now a VERY STRONG WORD OF MOUTH RUMOR, that Shen Yuan and Luo Binghe... That Luo Binghe had... And that Shen Yuan had sneaked out of his room...

("A very great walk of shame, shizhi" says Shang Qinghua when he finds out, drinking his morning tea.)

But they were rumors!!! Rumors!!! Meaningless rumors that meant nothing!! Damn!! Except, his parents are very willing to believe those rumors. Shen Jiu even more so, completely convinced that "that beast would be capable." Even if Shen Yuan swears on his virginity, chastity, and purity, they just... Ugh!!!

And of course, they need to do something.

This is how Luo Binghe is invited back to CQMS for tea and how, from then on, to quell the rumors, they must be... close. Let it not seem like it was a defiant affair by dirtying Shen Yuan's reputation (being an emperor's concubine wasn't bad. But being a one-night stand? One who ran away the next morning? Oh boy, the emperor's bed warmer!!!), but as: two close friends accompanying each other, meeting again after a long time. To weave a story of friendship and camaraderie so great that it could silence the rumors until they became boring.

Shen Yuan has no idea why Luo Binghe, with all the work he surely has to do as a demon emperor, is willing to do this charade. But of course, he seems firm: he will not let Shen Yuan's name be dragged on the ground, he will take responsibility!!!

Shen Yuan is shocked. Binghe, don't talk like that. One would think you'd even be capable of getting married just for that! Ha! Hahaha... It's not as if the ultimate goal of the charade is to weave a boring, scandal-free romance that no one would talk about, followed by an even more boring wedding to safeguard his reputation. Right? Right!? His parents DEFINITELY couldn't marry him to the Emperor just to avoid a political scandal!!

They couldn't!!! Or could they?

fic is a safe space, probably one of the last safe spaces. by safe i mean safe from the pressure of caving to advertisers. you can write fic about anything and not worry (shouldn’t worry) about what’s popular or what an advertiser oriented algorithm will pick up. what i mean by this is that you don’t have to bring this advertiser friendly behavior into fic. heroes can make bad decisions, people can fall out of love, villains can win, villainous organizations can win, redemption doesn’t have to happen, etc. make things a little messy if you want to, because life can be messy and art is a reflection of life. not what the advertisers have decided for us life is like, real life. this is one of the last places where this is still possible

I honestly don't think Crowley has trouble loving Aziraphale. For as guarded and fake a person as he is, he's honestly quite demonstrative. He's always saving him (at immense risk to himself), trying to spend extra time with him, doing him little favors, gently teasing him about silly things, taking him out to eat, asking him to run away with him. He even pays him some genuine compliments from time to time (very cute for a sarcastic liar like Crowley), and even though the sunglasses cover it up quite a bit, he also stares at him a lot.

So no, Crowley isn't afraid to love Aziraphale, he's afraid to be loved back. Or maybe more specifically, he's afraid that if he tries to be actually loved back, he'll be rejected. He's afraid of being vulnerable. But as long as he's the one offering up the love (especially if it's in safe ways like acts of service aka being useful), as long as he's in control of the situation and doesn't need to be taken care of himself or be vulnerable, he's fine.

Addition note: Don't think about how often Aziraphale rejects him, like when he really needed help with the Holy Water, or at the Bandstand or when he told Crowley either he helps with Gabriel or he leaves. Don't think about how often Aziraphale calls him evil or assumes he's done something terrible. And definitely don't think about how that would affect someone who hates themselves and is terrified of rejection.
