And considering how much Lucian loves Matthias (and let's be honest, his blood), it's never just a casual snack. What saves this vampire is that his fangs contain a paralytic venom that calms the victim, clouds the mind and all these things. ♡ — he's not sure how long he stayed in your room, watching you sleep. he doesn't know how many photos he took, but he took enough to max out his sd card. what he does know is that when he finally went back to his apartment, one of your shirts was tightly grasped in his hand. he feels so guilty, tears in his eyes. but your shirt was his pillowcase now.

♡ — and lord forbid if you ever actually catch him stalking you. it's his worst nightmare at this point, the very thought scaring him enough to the point where his hands start to shake and he starts to tear up. if you do catch him, lucian isn't against begging for your forgiveness. he's always been a bit pathetic, but the thought of losing what little affection you held for him only seemed to make him worse.

Lucian is lean and athletic and Lucia is more slender and curvy. Both gravitate toward flamboyant outfits that demand attention. Everything is tailored, everything is expensive, everything is chosen to remind you exactly what kind of monster you’re dealing with.

No one knows where they came from. The smart ones stopped asking after the last curious journalist disappeared. The smarter ones know some origins are written in blood. Everyone can agree that they’re a crime boss who built an empire from other people’s ashes. Someone who learned that power isn’t taken, it’s carved from the bones of those too weak to hold it.

They don’t do mercy. Don’t do forgiveness. Don’t do second chances.

Hi there, sorry if this is a silly question: I have a character who is Black and is a princess, very dedicated to the royal family and all that. What kind of hairstyle[s] embodies the wealth, money, and time that comes with aristocracy? I've been drawing her with a natural afro but your post about hairstyles made me think that she would want to put more time and effort into every hairstyle.

Well first: all of them! I don't like to attach Black hairstyles or texture to value. However we wear our hair, if it's being worn by someone royal, it is now a royal hairstyle! So don't do that. Afros are divine!

That emotional part out of the way, I assume what you mean is what are some examples of hairstyles worn by royalty, that look like they take a long time to do. And I'd say that depends on 1) what designates royalty in your fantasy culture (braids? Hair cuts? Headdresses or head coverings upon marriage?) and 2) what culture's hairstyles you're looking at.

For example, my mom raised me that cowrie shells were a sign of wealth, and gave me some when I was an adult for hair and ornaments. That, I believe, is more Western African in nature though.

So who invented science fiction, anyway?

Dream blunt rotation, sci-fi edition (dead people only): Lucian of Samosata, Cyrano de Bergerac, Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, Alexander Bogdanov, Kurt Vonnegut, Philip K. Dick (if there's only one of those in the rotation, it's fine, just don't get surrounded by them), Ursula Le Guin, Douglas Adams

First of all, that's a dumb question. Literary genres aren't "invented" by single individuals. Nothing exists in a vacuum, there's no virgin birth in art, and culture is a conversation.

Second, there's no single rigid definition of science fiction. That stuff is loose and fluid and in the eye of the beholder. And depending on how you choose to define it, even The Epic of Gilgamesh can be considered a sci-fi story.

Third, for most intents and purposes, it's Mary Shelley. Science fiction as a genre begins with Frankenstein, that's not complicated at all.

Fourth, before Frankenstein, there are TONS of stories with elements we recognise now as belonging or at least adjacent to science fiction, but they're incidental to the narrative so nobody cares. Lucian wrote about inhabited planets and space battles in the 2nd century. But it was a satirical story, and if it took place in a land of magic mountains instead, it wouldn't make a lick of difference. Scores of people wrote utopias and/or adventures set on the moon, the sun, the stars. So what. It could have been on an imaginary island or the Fairy Realm, and nothing would change. All it says is "we set the stage Elsewhere".

Notable exception to the Fourth: Kepler's Somnium. That story is set (via dream) on the moon, and couldn't have been set anywhere else, because the whole point is to explain how the earth would look when viewed from the moon. That was what Kepler (that's the astronomer, not some random dude) wrote first and what he cared about, the rest is just a narrative framework added later. So it's not really science fiction because it's not really fiction in the first place, it's science with frills.

More exceptions to the Fourth: there are tales written in the late 18th / early 19th century that are, by now, recongisably science fiction. But they weren't novels, they were poems and one instance of prose-poetry, and they didn't make a genre. Frankenstein did that.

Fifth, mayhaps the correct word isn't "invent". It's "kickstart".

Can't really say, given how little concrete facts we have about this relationship. We don't even know how and why they got together. I think it's pretty clear that Hephaistos did have some affection for her though, but Aphrodite's feelings are much harder to discern. In any case, it was probably not the deep and forever kind of love for either of them... At least as long as we're not taking the Aeneid of Vergil or Thebaid of Statius into account, where Vulcan is quite the simp who apparently does whatever Venus wants him to even after catching her in bed with their brother. So... I think the proper answer should be that it really depends on the source we're discussing. Lucian even has some of his characters claim that Aphrodite is fond of and affectionate with Hephaistos even if it is Ares she truly loves.
