okay Kit caught my attention immediately because I too coped with trauma that way LOL What color does he die his hair? How does he style it? Does he still struggle with that trauma or has he fully coped? If he still struggles, how does he maintain his joyfulness in the midst?

How does he express his creativity? How does he make art?

In canon, Kit dyes his hair 3 times, but passes through 4 different colors: blue, red, silver and yellow (two of them are done thanks to magic, and only one is by accident)

He WILL struggle with trauma, but I think that with time he will be able to cope tbh. Kit has a really growth arc aside from being the comic relief character and if Agatha's is more of "learning to be loved", his will be "learning to be fine by yourself"

He has joking as a coping mechanism so go figure, he never loses his joy unless stuff is really bad.

My boy is an art major and he loves everything that can make him work with his hands (painting, sculpting...) In the book there's two references of "works of art" he has done: one is a mural for a pretty famous café/bar, and the other was a drunk bitter graffiti (that makes the plot start😅)

Almost a blackout but not quite! I guess I don’t do 100% evil characters, and I have clumsy characters but none are hopeless.

Time to briefly talk about all my OCs listed here

Magic Wielder: Waverleigh Hawthorne

I have a lot of magic wielders tbh but I picked her because I’m biased lol she is the daughter of a wizard/bard father (see: Barlin) and a sorceress mother (Aracelle), and her and her siblings are in an unspoken rivalry of who’s going to be a sorcerer and who’s going to be a wizard. Wizards are usually looked down upon by sorcerers. The family is supportive and loving but when Waverleigh doesn’t get her innate specialty power she’s pretty disappointed. Except she’s a late bloomer and her darkness powers come in full force and she can’t control them and she almost hurts people she loves AND embarrasses herself in front of her crush, Alias. She eventually goes on to travel with her crush and use her powers to help with his performances (he’s a horror bard lol).

Mischief Maker: Glace Stonebriar

He is the son of a prince, born into a royal family of prim and proper and he is bored by it. He doesn’t want anything to do with sea elf politics so he decides that he’s going to do his own thing. He steals his father’s display weapons just to prove he can, on multiple occasions (he puts them back). One time he cut off half his ear by accident with a sword. He doesn’t have an accent normally but he has given himself one. Kinda British I guess? Anyway he eventually runs away with his adventurer grandpa and they become privateers. Then he loses said grandpa and has to go find him.

Cursed: Zereus

Zereus studies curse magic, and there are consequences to this, consequences that drive him a bit mad. He leaves home to continue this study, finding religious artifacts, learning curses are connected to blessings, stuff like that. The land of Jernoctrr is cursed due to some crazy curse magic used during the war, and it’s spreading to infect the other lands. Zereus learns how to stop it, but in order to, he has to absorb the curse himself.

Food lover: Marley Hawthorne

Oldest son of Barlin and Aracelle. He’s a sorcerer that can conjure up basically anything out of no where. The possibilities are endless. He uses it to make sandwiches. This pisses his wizard twin Ignatius off to no end.

Inhuman: Xander

Xander lives in a world where demons have risen from hell and have began infecting creatures of earth, creating monsters. This is usually animals, but when a demon possesses Xander’s father and takes advantage of his mother, Xander is created. He’s mostly human except he has big black wings. He’s on the run his whole life, but meeting Dakota changes everything.

Bankrupt: Axel Hawke

Axel’s from Mars which is just a mining colony planet. It’s not a thriving community for the most part, and almost everyone is poor. Axel spends all his money that he’s saved up all his life on a broken down freighter ship and gets him and his best friend, Logan, out of there. They’re broke for a very long time, just scraping by on odd jobs. Axel borrows money from people he can’t hope to pay back and gets in a lot of trouble by doing this.

Morally ambiguous: Varian Drake

Varian is a Variant, the perfectly constructed heir to take over Brillig, a billion dollar science corporation that makes supervillains and has demonized superheroes. Superheroes have been forced to go underground. A group of three teens work for one of the most powerful superheroes (idr his name or what he does, it’s been forever since I’ve worked on this, I’m so sorry). The kids have been forced to come out of hiding when he goes missing. These kids break into a Brillig facility, thinking they know where their “dad” is, and instead they find an experimented on girl named Lunaura that they rescue. Varian gets intel on this, and infiltrates their base to get more intel because the hero they’re trying to find threatens the existence of Brillig. But Varian starts to genuinely become friends with the group (and fall for Project: Luminosity—Lunaura), so he becomes super conflicted. Once he’s found out he goes back to Brillig but he feels awful and has to decide what he’s going to do: follow in his father’s footsteps, or take him down like the true variant he is.

Nature dweller: Cerelia

Cerelia is a steam genasi Druid. She wants nothing more than to be a botanist, and grow all sorts of species of plants to study them. Except she has the complete opposite of a green thumb, and often destroys her own work on accident.

Liar, liar: Rosalind [REDACTED]

She’s the daughter of two of my Vespyr crew members (don’t want to give that away right now lol) and she’s a wild child. Mischievous, always getting up to no good. She ends up running away as a teen and becoming a spy of sorts, which requires a lot of lying to get out of trouble. Or, you know, into it.

Musically gifted: Barlin Hawthorne

Barlin is a traveling merchant wizard/bard. He has learned how to play all sorts of instruments over the years, and really enjoys playing obscure ones. That’s it, that’s the character intro

Annoyingly perfect: Justice Wells

Since Shane and Raelynn are married I don’t mind saying they eventually have a little girl. However she’s born without being able to use her legs, and she’s very weak and fragile with brittle bones. Even a simple cold could kill her. Her best friend, Kai, helps her in whatever ways he can. All she wants to do is walk but a fall could break a lot of her bones. She has a very good attitude about her disability, and doesn’t let it get her down, and even gives the glory to God. But as a preteen, Justice undergoes many surgeries to get a super strong mesh placed around all her bones, making her a super soldier. And then she’s playing every sport (which ends up controversial because she’s enhanced): soccer, martial arts, gymnastics, dance. Whatever she can excel at she does, and she’s humble about it. She soars above Kai’s skill level and he’s happy for her but he’s also envious of how “perfect” she becomes. She does still have flaws but a lot of people wave them off because of Justice’s past…she doesn’t let them. She wants to be held accountable for when she messes up. Luckily her parents have always held her to a high standard. It’s difficult for Kai because he starts living in Justice’s perfect shadow.

Influencer: Mercedes ‘Mercy’ McKinley

Mercy has her own fashion line so of course she advertises it online through being an Influencer. Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, whatever. She’s got thousands of followers that watch her fashion content where she styles outfits, shows her process in clothing making, etc. she has brand deals for beauty as well and works with other smaller fashion companies.

Good-hearted: Jasper Clearwater

Jasper has always had a loving, selfless heart. She just wants to be friends with (almost) everyone, and she wants to help in whatever ways she can. When she meets Echo, she wants to help him with his trauma, and he finally lets her in. She stands up to bullies, even if it makes her anxious. She advocates for her friends always. If something involves her friends, this normally shy girl has a voice about it. This good heart gets her into trouble sometimes because she prys too much, she pushes too much and it makes people uncomfortable and angry. When he friend group breaks up, she has a lot of work to do and a lot of pushback to deal with.

Athletic: Dakota Gordon

Dakota is a military brat. She loves guns and working out and wants to be in the military once she gets out of high school. She’s in powerlifting and ROTC. She also loves nature and hiking and camping and she will sketch things she sees. She has no problem going on the run through the wilderness and mountains of Arkansas. Mackenzie and Xander teach her more combat related stuff along the way and she gets pretty skilled at it. She’s just very capable and healthy.

I’d like to share a piece I was randomly inspired to write after seeing an Amazon ad. It’s probably canon, but I have no idea if it’s going to make it into the book, of which the new working title is “Pieces” (doubt it will because I would time this during the summer before the events of the book). It’s about a group of broken teens that split after a big, unknown event that the writer has to ’piece’ together as Jasper tries to put the ‘pieces’ of her friends back together.

I hope it makes sense but there is a lack of context! also I’m rusty af lol

“I got you something.”

Jerecho peeled back the safe confines of his comforter, only lowering it past his bird’s nest of white hair, and narrowed green eyes surrounded by dark circles. Even though the curtains were drawn, the late afternoon sun streamed through his window and burned his retinas.

Jasper brought out a smiling, pastel green octopus plush from behind her back with a grin, presenting it to him in both her cupped hands.

“You got me a stuffed animal.” Why couldn’t she have gotten him something useful? Like food loaded with preservatives? Or a noose?

She brought it closer, encouraging him to take it, and he accepted it with annoyed reluctance.

“It glows in the dark. Ghostly vibes. Turn it inside out.”

He furrowed his brow and did as she asked so she’d go away and spread her gross kindness and blinding personality elsewhere. On the inside—now the outside? Whatever—the octopus was black with bright green angry eyes.

He refused the inclination to give Jasper exactly what he knew she wanted—use the dumb thing to express his displeasure. But, he did consider throwing it back at her face.

“The eyes glow too,” she said with a proud grin. “Now you can express your emotions without speaking.”

“Ah, yes, the only two emotions. Cute happy and cute angry.”

“Two emotions fitting of you.” She flushed.

He might not have noticed if the pink dusting her cheeks hadn’t given her away. “Are you flirting with me?”

Her flush deepened, but she held his gaze. “Yes.”

He almost respected the sudden display of confidence so foreign of his shy friend, but he was busy abhorring the way his stomach dropped, and how he had to break eye contact to keep his sanity. Real smooth, Jerecho. Depression really makes you bring your A-game.

At least Jasper’s gaze dropped too. Some normalcy left in this world.

“A-anyway, it’s a conversation starter that doesn’t require you to talk when you’re too numb to.”

He rolled his eyes, holding the stupid thing out to her. “Jasp, this isn’t going to help me. Or you.”

She didn’t take it. “It will if you name him.”

Jerecho blinked. “What.”

“Name him,” she insisted. “Then you’ll grow an attachment to him and will feel obligated to use him.”

“That’s stupid.”

“Just do it.”

“Ugh.” He waved the plush carelessly as he shrugged. “I dunno. Danny Phantom?” He scoffed.

“That’s copyrighted.” She smirked, challenging him.

“Oh my fu—okay, fine. Phantom. Happy?”

Jasper finally took the plush from his hand—only to turn it inside out again, exposing the wide eyes and c-shaped grin. She smiled her own ridiculously proud smile, and nodded.

Echo stared, straining, and covered his head back up to hide the stupid grin that was forcing its way onto his face. “I hate you.” I hate that I love you.

“Was that a smile?” Jasper poked at the comforter cocoon.

“It was a grimace. I was grimacing because I have the absolute displeasure of being your friend.”

She kept jabbing at him. He squirmed, attempting to fight her off without leaving the safety of his comforter, but she was relentless, and he was ticklish.

Screw it, he thought, and vaulted up. Jasper squealed as he bear-hugged her and flung himself back down with her in tow.

A tickle-focused wrestling match later, the two were face to face, breathless and grinning.

“See? It worked.” He hated that it did.

“The octopus does nothing. I can’t even express when I’m hopelessly depressed. Only ‘angry’ when you inevitably shove your way into my depression.”

“See, I thought about that.” Jasper reached down into her hoodie pocket and brought out—

“You got me two?”

“Yes.” She flipped the light blue, happy side to reveal a darker shade of blue and a frown.

His best friend was the biggest dork in the universe. And if it didn’t drive him absolutely crazy with want, want that sliced through his sadness.

“You’re so dumb,” he said, to stave off the heavy pressure of “I love you” clawing it’s way up his chest.

The smile that she gave him—the one she reserved only for him, soft and loving and forgiving, too forgiving—told him that she heard it anyway.

“I know,” she said. And he heard the “I love you too” that she was too smart to say. He saw it in her deep blue eyes, and suddenly he was drowning and he couldn’t breathe. He didn’t deserve her, but he sure as hell wanted to kiss her with all that he had, with all that he was.

Too bad ‘all that he was’ was the reason he couldn’t kiss her.

He crashed into her, not in the way he wanted, but in the way he arguably needed, burying his face in her shoulder to keep from doing something they’d both regret. Pressure grew behind his eyes, pressure he fought hard against—harder when she wrapped her arms around him, one hand running through his atrociously unkempt hair.

“It’s okay,” she said, but they both knew it was a lie. He could believe a lie for a little bit, as long as he was wrapped in her embrace.

Hi!! @ink-fireplace-coffee here!! I have a question for/about Jasper and Jerecho! How did they meet?? Did they get along instantly or, because of their different personalities it took a while to connect? do they have fun stories about their friendship?

No worries! More than one question worked out because I just answered the first two in a different ask 🤣 great minds think alike.

Honestly Jasper and Jerecho are inseparable after they get past the clashing. Here are some misc things/memories

They start keeping journals and passing it between them with writings and drawings they collaborate on together. They stopped around 12, but Jasper still has the stack of them all.

Jasper loves reading back on them and Jerecho has turned some of their ideas into books he wants to write

They totally make forts all the time

Then Jasper gets a loft bed at 11 and then they have a permanent fort that they call “The Cave”

Jasper actually teaches Jerecho how to swim which embarrasses the heck out of him at the time

They swim all summer, and play games like whirlpool and Marco Polo and a mix of the two that they invented

They go on walks down their road. Two older boys make fun of how Jasper looks so Jerecho physically fights them one day. He gets grounded for that but the boys don’t bother them anymore

This isn’t the only time he fights an older dude to defend Jasper lol

They have outdoor movie nights with his parents and they eat way too much junk and pull all-nighters

They spend holidays like Christmas together because Jasper doesn’t really have family outside of Amber. Jasper usually gets him good gifts and he usually makes her something he thinks is lame but she always loves it. She still has his gifts on display

The Maxwell’s will also take Jasper (and Amber) on vacation with them so they have camped together a few times, stayed in a haunted hotel, boated on lakes and oceans, etc

Jasper always gets sunburnt or injured and Jerecho makes fun of her but also takes care of her in his Jerecho way

“Hey, put on your aloe, stupid.”

“Remember what happened last time you didn’t reapply sunscreen?”

“Let me see your hand. Okay, it’s fine, the cut isn’t that deep, don’t be overdramatic. I can wrap it up so you don’t have to look at it”

They play Pokémon DP together on their DS’s, and Guitar Hero on Jerecho’s Wii. Also Mario Kart on the 64

they also play with nerf guns

Once they hit 12/13, they of course enter their edgy teenager phase and start listening to way more hard rock and other music together. All Time Low is their fave

Jerecho gets his nickname “Echo” because it’s edgy and cool and they’re 12. Jasper still calls him that and she’s the only one allowed

The first time Echo hugs Jasper (he’s touch averse until like 14), it’s because Jasper passes the big reading state test at the end of their 8th grade year when she was certain she’d fail

Jasper felt arms bear hug her from behind. “I knew you could do it,” a familiar voice said.

Her stomach dropped as she realized that it was Echo that had hugged her, but when she finally had the thought to hug back, he was gone.

They go to an All Time Low concert. It’s their first one and they get terrible seats but they have a good time singing all the songs and being dorks

Joseph is their ride and he hates every second of the music but is glad his kids are having fun lol

They went to a Breaking Benjamin/Disturbed concert when they’re a little older with some other friends (Brass and Mitch) and tried to mosh. It was fun until Jasper got knocked down and practically trampled. Echo saved her lol (Brass almost fell on her)

Jasper: “treasurer”

Jerecho: normally spelled Jericho. It means “city of the moon,” and was the city that the Israelites marched around and felled. It spelled “wrong” because his bioparents were trying to be artsy (also I was trying to be artsy because his nickname Echo. Echo came to me because I thought it was a cool name for a ghost which was what he originally was.)

Brass: (for spoiler purposes we won’t be using his real name) an alloy of copper and zinc. His nickname however comes from the fights he gets in because he uses Brass knuckles. Idr how it came to me, just thought it was cool.

Mitchell: English variation of Michael "who is like God"

Mercedes: “gracious gifts, benefits.” “Mercedes is one of the few names attached to luxury living…it being a legitimate Spanish appellation stemming from one of the epithets given to the Virgin Mary--Santa Maria de las Mercedes, or Our Lady of the Mercies.” Source 

Sterling: “of the highest quality”

Raegan: “little king”

Desabelle: I made this one up actually. I wanted her nicknames to be “Des” and “Desa” so I just looked for other names that had that “a” sound with an extension if that makes sense (see: Annabelle)

Kaiper: Axel’s future son. He wanted to name him after a space related thing, his wife wanted to name him Kai, which means “sea.” Axel tried for Kuiper, his wife asked for the spelling “Kaiper.” Axel settles for the spelling but they argue about it a lot. 

Alias: not his real name, but when he’s on the run and trying to keep his name private, he’s asked what his name is. “My name?” “Yeah, your name” “…” “Your name, kid. Your alias, what you go by. C’mon, it ain’t that hard.” So he took Alias lol 

Lunaura: another one I made up, literally from the words “Luna” and “aura.” It means “moon’s aura.”

Varian: “variable” or “fickle.” He’s one clone of many, all of them are called Variants. He was just the one his father deemed the best, cut off the “t” and bam. His name. (Apparently it’s the name of a WoW character?? But I didn’t know that. I don’t play WoW.)

i do not listen to music music while i write because it distracts me unfortunately! however i do listen to one playlist in order to get me in the mood for writing—my JaspEcho playlist, my main ship in my WIP Transcendents: Broken Resonance.

the mood i go for to get me in the mood for writing is ”angsty,” usually. i write angst best.

I am organizing my JaspEcho playlist based on how the songs fit them chronologically. It is pleasing the Virgo in me, but it’s 120 songs. So I had to write out a vague timeline on a google doc and then start looking at the lyrics for each song and decide where it goes in relation to events and other songs.

Ask time! How would your character(s) react to…

A small family run farm? Can they take the smell of the animals? How do the animals react to them? Would they help out with the farm duties, or try to get out of there?

and/or

An undersea vehicle, deep in the darkest and least understood regions of the oceans? Are they fascinated by what their lights catch on in the pitch black, or terrified? How does the awareness of all that weight and pressure of the water above affect them?

EDIT: I totally forgot this was an ask for an event and not out of courtesy so I might go back and answer this for a different set of characters in a bit lol

I’ll answer the farm one because I think it’s more likely for JaspEcho lol

I imagine they’re either on vacation or Echo works there. Jasper loves the animals, and they love her. She has somehow become the leader of the army of barn cats. They follow her around everywhere. Echo is terrified. He loves cats too but only the one that’s missing a leg likes him?? Of course. In fact none of the animals like Echo and he has a terrible time because he’s taking care of them. He almost gets annihilated by a horse. The poop is bigger than him. Chickens have taken out his ankles. Someone get him out of here.

on second thought, he’s fine. he sees Jasper in a field of flowers taking pictures of nature and cats. she is brighter than the summer sun. Echo’s heart wants to explode out of his chest. she’s beautiful and he can survive the trip as long as she’s there.

How did Jasper and Jerecho meet?? :) Gimme gimme.

Dang I had all this written out and was about to post then tumblr did a heckin dumb sghtdgbhtfghhht time to rewrite!

Jasper lives next door to Joseph and Keeley Maxwell, but she also practically lives at their house half the time from 3 years old to 12. Her parents (who were good friends with the Maxwells long before Jasper) died in a tragic accident, and her much older sister Amber takes custody of her. The Maxwells help Amber out while she works and stuff.

When Jasper is 9, the Maxwell’s foster 9-year old Jerecho. He came from a home full of neglect and drug-abuse, and has been in the foster system for a few years. After a bit of adjusting to his new foster home, he meets Jasper. He does not get along with her at first, but since Jasper practically lives there anyway, and they go to school together, they almost have to be friends. She wants nothing more than that, and Jerecho wants nothing more than for her to go away. Her childlike innocence makes him mad, mostly because he’s envious of it.

But they do eventually become good friends. There’s no direct turning point though.

Mundane Monday Ask!

What does the crew of the Vespyr do for fun when they're not, like, fighting for their lives and threatening their stowaway into hard labor?

Also, the Darkness Chronicles sounds really cool and I can't wait to read more about the story and characters. :)

Thanks so much for the interest! I’m sorry I didn’t answer this yesterday but balancing life with a newborn is hard eidjfhifjdjf

Des: she reads when she’s a stowaway and locked in her cell, (AKA Axel’s room because they don’t have a detainment area and he sleeps in the chair a lot anyway) and when she’s part of the crew (oops—spoilers lol). She’s from a location that has banned all books (digital and paper) and so she’s hungry for them. Logan has a huge library and she has access to...I guess the universal internet(?) now. In the beginning she befriends Logan easily so she’ll talk to him about a lot, including the books she borrows from him. She’ll go watch him do medbay stuff sometimes too. His work fascinates her. And so does he ;)

Also she doesn’t have a whole lot of free time because the Vespyr needs a lot of work. Axel, the captain, has really let it go. He loves his ship but for reasons he cant just. Go to a spaceport and get repairs. Also he’s broke. Lol

Axel: he looks at space passing by when the ship is on autopilot. It’s usually not. He is perfectly content with doing these things for hours on end for the rest of his life. Logan will often have to come interact with him, as most don’t willingly interact with Axel. He is very hard to communicate with, and takes a lot of patience. Which is hard to have when Axel doesn’t have any himself. Him and Des fight over ship repairs a lot. They don’t see eye to eye on anything.

Logan: he also reads a lot, but he studies too. Medical journals and religious texts. He’s a Christian so he pours over texts about the events of the Bible. He also practices medical stuff on rats LOL he figures if he can do it on a rat, he can do it on a human (he’s not actually a doctor, but he is because he’s had to be his whole life. So he wants to be ready if he has to act as a doctor). Him and Shane will occasionally meet and talk poetry.

Shane: he trains and eats. He is a huge dude and he has to eat and train a lot to keep himself healthy. He cleans his guns often, disassembles and reassembles to see how fast/efficiently he can do it. He also will take off his metal arm and recalibrate it. He spends time with Raelynn, his wife. she’ll train with him as well, and they’ll bond over weapon stuff.

Raelynn: she’s the ship mom. Or maybe the ship crazy aunt. She loves cooking so she’ll prepare meals for the crew. Rae also makes weapons (nothing too techy, her specialty is bows) and also jewelry and other accessories. She’s a traveling merchant and so when they’re planet-side she sells her wares. “Bows and Arrows“ is her shop’s name. She’s also the communications officer which is really funny considering how quirky she is. It confuses people lol

Cassi: it‘s a bit before she’s part of the crew but when she’s aboard she‘s drawing or just consuming media. she’s kind of lost and has a hard time finding her purpose in the universe. at first she’s just a rescue mission but once she joins the crew she takes over communications from Rae. She’s kind of a mess after spending years as a space pirate. she struggles with depression and has no drive to do anything. She’s a Christian but she’s lost her faith Which is all she’s ever known. She‘s always fighting for it back and fighting to push it away. Logan tries to help her with that, but he’s also uncomfortable because she just relentlessly flirts with him to get under his skin.

Gonna answer this for Axel, actually! hes a spaceship captain in The Darkness Chronicles. the thing he’d hate to lose most is definitely his ship. he saved up for it, he lives to fly it through space. losing it would be more than losing a huge investment, it would be like losing a part of him.
