Clive Davis, Goddard Lieberson, Walter Yetnikoff, David Geffen, Irving Azoff …

No book taught me more about these music moguls and their dramatic dealings with egomaniacal superstars (Michael, Janis, etc.) plus their power-mad managers, lawyers, etc. than Fredric Dannen’s Hit Men.

The book also delves into the controversial subject of payola, indie promoters, and the music industry’s ties to organized crime, so I consider William Knoedelseder’s Stiffed ideal follow-up reading for those who want to learn more about shady characters like Roulette Records boss Morris Levy and super-indie Fred DiSipio.

I actually sat down one-on-one with a decrepit DiSipio (he looked to be 100 years old!) when A&M Records promoted me to be a radio promotion regional in 1998 and he ironically counseled me to steer clear of indie promoters!

It was almost like that was a community service condition of his probation or something.

So … does payola live on? No comment!

James himself lay stretched out like a smug cat basking in attention and heat, golden from weeks of sun exposure, his chest bare and glistening with sunscreen and confidence. His abs—of which he was intensely proud—were on full, accidental-on-purpose display. Every so often, he’d roll his shoulders or yawn dramatically, just in case Regulus happened to glance his way. Which he rarely did. Which only made James more determined.

Sirius, on the other hand, had already achieved peak relaxation.

He lay in a purple flamingo float drifting gently around the pool like some sort of chaotic deity on vacation, wearing a wide-brimmed straw sunhat, designer sunglasses, and a white shirt billowing open in the breeze. One leg dangled over the float’s side; the other rested on a waterproof speaker that was currently blasting Fleetwood Mac.

A half-melted drink was balanced precariously on his chest.

“James,” Sirius called lazily, one eye cracked open. “Bring me watermelon. Or a better drink. Or both.”

“Bring it yourself, you lazy git.”

“I’m floating, James. This is a sacred state of being.”

“You’re lounging in an inflatable bird.”

“Exactly.”

Meanwhile, Regulus sat upright in a rigid patio chair like a perfectly miserable Victorian ghost, legs crossed at the ankle, jeans on (jeans!), and a pale button-up tucked and ironed like he had a business meeting instead of a sunburn to earn. He looked vaguely offended by the idea of summer in general.

He hadn't even taken his shoes off.

James, watching this ridiculous contrast, pushed his sunglasses onto his forehead and stared.

"Reg."

“Hm?”

“You’re gonna evaporate in that outfit.”

Regulus didn’t look up from his book. “I’m comfortable.”

“You’re sweating.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re wearing jeans.”

“I said I’m fine.”

Sirius chimed in again, now slowly rotating in the pool. “Honestly, Regulus, I don't know if you're the most stubborn person alive or just committed to the bit.”

Regulus turned a page. “Both.”

James leaned up on his elbows, squinting toward him like he was planning something.

"You know what you need right now, my love?"

“No,” Regulus said immediately and with maximum suspicion.

Sirius cackled. “God, this is gonna be good.”

James stood, stretching like he was preparing for battle—or a one-man stage performance. “You,” he said dramatically, “need to lighten up.”

“James, don’t.”

But James was already moving, grinning like a child on Christmas morning.

Regulus caught on too late. “*No. James—No.”

“YES.”

With a loud whoop, James hoisted Regulus up bridal-style, muscles flexing as if to say see, Sirius, this is why I do ab day. Regulus flailed and cursed like a proper sailor, book flying dramatically to the ground.

“PUT ME DOWN—THIS IS KIDNAPPING—”

“This is love,” James corrected, and with a running leap, he launched both of them into the pool.

Water erupted in a magnificent splash. Sirius screamed—not in fear but indignation as he clutched his drink above his head. “MY COCKTAIL, YOU BASTARDS!”

Regulus came up first, sputtering, eyes wide and hair flat against his head. “You absolute monster.”

James surfaced, laughing so hard he nearly choked. “You’re welcome.”

Regulus tried to glare, but the glare lacked conviction now that he was dripping wet and his shirt clung dramatically to every part of his slim frame.

Sirius let out a long, theatrical sigh. “You two are sickening.”

“Jealous,” James called back, treading water as he pushed Regulus’s hair from his eyes.

“I am,” Sirius agreed. “Of Regulus. For getting free abs and a man who’s willing to drag him into a pool for emotional enrichment.”

James grinned and looked back at Regulus. “You’re hot when you’re wet.”

Regulus groaned. “Don’t say that.”

“But you are.”

“Still hate you.”

James swam closer. “That’s not what you said last night.”

Before Regulus could respond—or commit a murder—Sirius cannonballed in with the grace of a drunk cat, soaking all three of them and sending the flamingo float spiraling.

After Nella had been weened, dinners in the Jackson household became a complicated affair.

Sophia was already a ... complicated eater. Not picky. She was adventurous enough. But she was stubborn and demanding, and she had the iron will of a hunger striker when she didn't feel like eating whatever Percy had made. Having grown up with limited options, Percy found this behavior a bit incomprehensible, but also, startlingly endearing and joyful. That Sophia felt secure enough to deny food, and safe enough to request new meals filled Percy with a satisfied joy was contradictory to, although equally present as his frustration. Last night, she had eaten three bowls of Foot Loops for dinner.

Nella was a classic picky eater, though, and had been the reason so many home-made dinners had become bland and routine. Percy had started cooking what they called "Nella chicken." No pepper or other seasonings, just a breast cooked in a little bit of butter, plated up with butter noodles, and some ketchup. Hers was cooked separately so that he could season the rest of the food. They had a list of foods like these for her -- hot dogs (but cut up, no end pieces, and only beef, no pork), grilled cheese (but not burnt!), Uncrustable PB&J (but not homemade PB&J), carrots, strawberries, blueberries, and apples (but not bananas or oranges). Nella has also developed a hunger striker-like attitude. But where her sister acted on principle, Nella genuinely seemed like she might be sick if you tried to force her to eat a pork chop. Percy had one convinced her to try a spoonful of peas, and she'd held them half-chewed in her mouth until Percy discovered them an hour later at bath time.

When they started telling people that they were expecting a third baby, people responded with the same question: "are you hoping for a boy this time?"

Percy and Annabeth had traditionally answered gender questions with the true: "We don't care, as long as it's happy and healthy."

But this time, they'd found themselves saying instead "We don't care as long as its not a picky eater."

And they should have know better than to tempt fate like that.

If Nella or Sophia left food uneaten, Olivia would just about vacuum it up for them. She was the first kid who seemed to take after the dog.

Percy had announced it was a McDonalds night. There was some kind of Squishmallow happy meal toy the girls wanted and had been asking for all week, Nella ate nuggets, and Sophia seemed to be on the brink of hunger strike if she didn't get french fries.

His family seemed satisfied with the choice, even if his and Annabeth's food wasn't a peak warmness by the time they got to it. They had to cut up Olivia's chicken and fries small enough that the one-year-old could manage on her own, open the toys for the girls, and negotiate a trade deal between them (which involved promising Sophia a full-sized Squishmallow later in the week if she just handed over the purple bat to her sister because "you know it's her favorite color. You can have the flamingo. It's pink!"). But finally, the older girls were playing, Olivia had been set free of her high chair after eating all of her food, and Percy ad Annabeth could sit and eat in front of the TV.

Percy figured his food was already past the point of delicious, so he left his Big Mac for another minute to lean in and kiss his wife, the only thing that brought him true calm these days. He loved the chaos of their life together, but when he needed that steadiness, he could count on her to be there. He felt her hand on his stubble as she pulled away, a contented smile on both of their faces.

"Your burger is being watched," Annabeth said as they pulled away. Percy looked over, and on the other side of the coffee table, Olivia had peaked her head up, showing Percy just the blonde top of her head and wide gray eyes -- a tiny Annabeth looking not at him, but at his food. Had Percy had a single meal in the last six months that this girl hadn't stolen a bite from?

Olivia pulled herself up, looking at him now, and opening her mouth like a baby bird.

"You're still hungry?" Percy asked. Olivia just kept her mouth open, wordless. She could talk -- she'd started around eight months like her sisters had (continuing to baffles pediatricians) -- but she favored a Jackson-like commitment to the bit. Olivia closed her mouth and then opened it again with a little chirp.

Next to him, Annabeth giggled and said something about nature videos and the cat TV she played for Boo, their fifteen year old cat.

"Yeah? Are you a little birdie?" Percy asked, standing to pick her up.

"Birb," Olivia confirmed. Percy sat back down and rested her between himself and Annabeth. They took turns picking bits off their own burgers and offering them to her. Olivia ate whatever the provided - bits of patty, cheese, pickle, lettuce, bun, even the special sauce.

Despite giving her little nibbles, Percy did still try to get in actual bites of his own meal, distracting Olivia with a full-sized fry to try and chew through while Annabeth chatted to him about her day, and their plans for the weekend. Distantly, he could hear Sophia and Nella playing in their room, nicely and without trying to kill each other.

Percy settled into the pleasantness of the evening, and let his guard down.

Next thing he knew, Olivia had pulled herself to standing on the couch, and was leaning in for a bite of his burger in the same moment in made it to his mouth. Tiny thing that she was, she got a good bit in her mouth and biting down possessively the way a street dog might. Too shocked by the whole scene to do anything about it, Percy reluctantly took the burger out of his mouth and helped Olivia take the massive bite she was after.

Annabeth, through her laughter, watched over her carefully to make sure she didn't choke, but Livy managed it all. Percy looked back at what would have been the final few bites of the burger, almost impressed at how diminished they were. Olivia only had a tiny mouth and four teeth, but she got through a decent chunk of meat and cheese, even a bit a bun.

Livy swallowed what she hand, and held out a hand to Percy for more. Percy ripped off more bread for her and handed it over.

Well. There were always Foot Loops.

i kind of combined 2010s/2000s girliness and made it aubrey themed,.,. (headspace) aubrey is actually very emblematic of my regression to me so it's kind of me but mostly her??? so this is like 6-8 year old regressed aubrey, like meeeee even though a lot of people see her as a cg :0 which surprised me

anyways i think i threw bunnies up all over this my bad guys there's too many

Discovering Tunes Through Fic: A Rec List

A sequel of sorts to my Discovering Lit Through Fic list from earlier this year (which I desperately need to update)! It's always fun to find mention of a song or musician/artist/band that you love in fic, and I also enjoy how such inclusions can lead to finding new things to listen to (some of these songs made my spotify wrapped entirely because of these fics!).

This list brings together works that I have encountered in my reading travels that have somehow incorporated songs or artists within the work (separate from being inspiration or source of title). If you see an artist or song that is your jam or piques your interest, be sure to give the fic a try—the music was selected with intent, so the work is probably your vibe!

- let’s just start this off by saying; BABY IS STRESSING OUTTT!!

- they’re about to marry their best friend. YOU! the most BEAUTIFUL GIRL/PERSON IN THE WHOLE WORLD

- when they’re changing into their suit/with their groomsmen (a few guy colleagues and some of their guy family members) sloan is getting pep talks and words of encouragement from everyone in that room. not a single bad vibe is in the room!

- wedding theme!: whatever you want it to be. a classic, white wedding? you got it! gothic/vampire? hell yeah!

- ^ but! with your choice of theme; sloan also has some huge crystals (that match the theme ofc) that they’ve gotten from expeditions for table decoration!

- the location was kinda on sloan, they picked where they wanted to have the wedding BUT! they made sure YOU were okay with it before making it the finalized decision. if you didn’t like the location, don’t worry! they have like A MILLION MORE

- everyone in both of your families helped pay for the wedding (if needed), like your parents paid for your dress/suit and sloan’s parents paid for their suit

- when they were at the alter, they were sooo nervous, their hands playing with the rings on their fingers and the bracelets that were around their wrists to calm their nerves

- but when you walked down the isle with your father/father figure, all their nerves just melted away.

- you looked so GOOD in their eyes! their heart was racing, their eyes got watery, their face got hot (they cried) (you did too)

- your vows were pretty standard (if there’s spanish vows then yall did that too!)

- but when yall had your first kiss; you know this sucker dipped you into the kiss, twirling you like in those cheesy romance movies (LIKE IN TANGLED AT THE END)

- and now the reception.

- for the food a verity of sloan’s family meals and your family meals, most of them being hand made to avoid a lot of cost

- alcohol/champagne obviously. all the adults are either drunk asf or tipsy (if you have family who smokes/does drugs, it’s totally up to you if you want that in your environment!! i will not be saying anything about that because it’s very different for everyone)

- the younger kids who can’t drink get something fizzy! like apple cider or something!

- father daughter/mother son dance to whatever song you’d like:)

- sloan did a mother-child(son) dance to songbird by fleetwood mac OR mi cariñito by pepe aguilar

- first dance! sloan could not stop smiling like a fucking idiot, they were SO IN LOVEEE

- you both shed a few tears during the dance (and through the night)

- sloan definitely used their teeth to take it off, probably also got a little carried away too; kissing your legs and running their hands up and down before snapping back to reality when their mother literally SCREAMED at them for being under your dress for almost 5 minutes

- after the wedding, the two of you got to your hotel/air bnb and just relaxed, got out of your fancy outfits, took makeup off, showered (together LMAO) and just got comfy!

- you both just kind of talked about the night and what you wanted in the future and other things:)

- let’s just say you two didn’t get a lot of sleep afterwards😳
