Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) in MacGregor Point Provincial Park, August 2017. If you squint you can see the Grebe in the center of the photo. Grebes are excellent swimmers and often disappear underwater right when you get a look at them. They forage for small fish and crayfish as well as various other aquatic invertebrates. Their nests are constructed out of bits of aquatic vegetation which they form together into a small bowl (about 5 inches in diameter). This bowl is sometimes made on top of a floating lily pad or other floating water plants. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #piedbilledgrebe #podilymbuspodiceps #grebe #grebesofinstagram #grebephotography #birdsofwetlands #aquaticbirds #macgregorpointprovincialpark #macgregorpoint #provincialparks #ontario_nature #ontarioprovincialpark (at MacGregor Point Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSPGK0Xg-S6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Antlion (Family Myrmeleontidae) at MacGregor Point Provincial Park, August 2017. These amazing creatures are related to Lacewings, and you can see the resemblance between their larvae. The larvae of Antlions (pictured here) are ambush predators that create pits in the sand for ants or other small insects to get stuck in. At the center of the pit are those massive jaws wide open and waiting. When an insect is trying to climb out of the sand pit, the Antlion will even toss sand grains in its path to make the climb even more difficult, ensuring it captures its meal. Swipe to see the Antlion as it burrowed back into the sand. . . . . . . . #nature #antlion #antlionsofinstagram #antlions #myrmeleontidae #insectpredator #ambushpredator #insectphotos #macgregorpoint #macgregorpointprovincialpark #lakehuron #beachinsect #amazinginsect #provincialpark #ontarioprovincialparks (at MacGregor Point Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDtiKYMgLuZ/?igshid=1pt7e2mja99ou

Lacewings, Part 2: Hatching out of the stalked egg would be a creature much like this one that I spotted at MacGregor Point Provincial Park, August 2017. This is a Lacewing Larva, of the Green Lacewing Family (Chrysopidae). These insects are sometimes called "aphid lions" because of their voracious predation upon aphids. They use their sickle-shaped mandibles to pierce prey and suck up the liquefied interior. This particular larva was sucking up spilled hot chocolate, apparently an alternative food source. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #lacewinglarvae #lacewinglarva #neuroptera #lacewings #chrysopidae #insectlarva #insects_of_our_world #larvae #aphidlion #entomology #entomologyphotography #ontarioprovincialparks #macgregorpoint #macgregorpointprovincialpark #naturephotography #insect (at MacGregor Point Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDYsXP6pQIF/?igshid=1adag4yny0660

Happy World Turtle Day! This is a Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina), spotted at McGregor Point Provincial Park, May 2018. Seeing a Snapping Turtle in the water was a wonderful sight, they move with such grace and stealth. Their nostrils are positioned right at the top tip of their snout, so they're able to surface just a tiny bit to get a breath of air before retreating back into the water. They will eat basically anything they can swallow: invertebrates, fish, birds, frogs, snakes, small mammals and other smaller turtles. Despite this and their fierce reputation, they generally avoid humans both in the water and on land, and aren't particularly interested in attacking, only defending if they feel threatened. Some studies show that Snapping Turtles can live for at least 100 years in the wild. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #macgregorpointprovincialpark #macgregorpoint #provincialparks #ontarioprovincialparks #ontarioparks #lakehuron #snappingturtle #worldturtleday #worldturtleday2020 #turtlesofinstagram #turtles #chelydraserpentina #reptiles #herpetology #ecology #greatlakes #naturephotography (at MacGregor Point Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAhqGMhAgF9/?igshid=104eghusf4fs1

North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) in MacGregor Point Provincial Park, May 2018. Porcupines are the second largest rodents in North America, just behind the Beaver. I've just reposted my May 2018 MacGregor observations on my blogpost at norfolknaturalist.ca, check out the post for many more photos of fascinating creatures and some facts about them. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #porcupine #erethizondorsatum #porcupines #macgregor #macgregorpointprovincialpark #macgregorpoint #ontarionature #ontariowildlife #naturesightings #wildlifephotography (at MacGregor Point) https://www.instagram.com/p/CePi9nYM6UZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Goldenrod Gall Fly Gall (Eurosta solidaginis) in a Goldenrod stem, in MacGregor Point Provincial Park, August 2017. Inside that spherical swelling in the green stem is a fly larva feeding on the plant. The feeding by the fly larva is what caused the plant to swell in the first place, creating a home and feeding area for the fly. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #goldenrodgallfly #goldenrodgall #plantgalls #insectgall #macgregorpointprovincialpark #natureallaround #eurostasolidaginis #galls #plantinsectinteractions #ecology #macgregorpoint #provincialparks #ontarioparks (at MacGregor Point Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSMwtWllsSF/?utm_medium=tumblr

Lacewings, Part 3: The strange "aphid lion" larvae of lacewings transform within a cocoon into the beautiful green adults. Their wings possess highly visible veins that give them their common name of "Lacewing". The adults feed on a variety of food sources: nectar, pollen, honeydew (that is excess sap passed through a plant-feeding insect's gut), or insect prey. This individual was photographed in MacGregor Point Provincial Park, August 2017. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #macgregorpointprovincialpark #macgregorpoint #ontarioprovincialparks #ontarioinsects #ontarionature #insectsofontario #greenlacewing #greenlacewings #lacewingsofinstagram #insects_of_our_world #insectphotography #provincialpark #insectphoto #insect #neuroptera (at MacGregor Point Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDbjmrHpcaY/?igshid=b91ogvau4rt
