Kelly Phillips – the Trapper

(1975 – 9/2000 – 34)

It is practically impossible for a normal human being to reach Tavish DeGroot’s level of drunk – but after that stunt her husband pulled, with a little sympathy and a lot of scrumpy, damn if Linda Phillips-Green didn’t get close.

When Linda discovered the pregnancy, she’d hoped that it was her husband’s, hoped that a baby could pull together their rocky relationship – and then everything fell apart when little Kelly came out the wrong color.

After the divorce, Linda hunted Tavish down for child support and managed to get his address. Unfortunately, Tilly DeGroot managed to get to her letters first – tradition is tradition no matter what her soft-hearted son might think, no contact with the girl until her first explosion.

Despite her strict suburban upbringing, Kelly somehow managed to inherit the DeGroot family eyesight troubles, requiring coke-bottle glasses to see anything more than shapeless colors (though the lenses are as good as any lighter for starting fires).

While helping her mom clip coupons from the Sunday paper, 5-year-old Kelly stumbled across the cartoons of Rube Goldberg. Over time, amusement bloomed into interest, and she began using toys and trash to build prototypes – and brainstorm pranks.

Needing a respectable way to get her crazy kid out of the house while she worked, Linda enrolled Kelly in the local Girl Scout troop when she was 7. She hoped the organization would give her some discipline – the activities just gave her more ideas.

As the chubby, dorky, four-eyed illegitimate biracial daughter of a WASP-y divorcee with a complex about their tax bracket, Kelly, unsurprisingly, carries a lot of insecurities – her inventions provide her an escape, an outlet for all her pent-up energy.

Before the REDs showed up, Kelly was instrumental in the kidnappees’ escape plan – no one bothers to check the 4th grade Girl Scout’s bag for duct tape, twine, firecrackers, and a Swiss army knife.

It takes Demoman a while (and a bender) to come around to having a kid, but he eventually sees through his own guilt and shock enough to get to know Kelly as a person – he sees a lot of himself in her, for better or worse.

Kelly gets a lot of needed encouragement on base – Hedy and Engie provide inventing mentorship, Scout emphatically endorses her pranking skills, and Pyro throws “girls nights” for her and Rosa.

One could argue the REDs indulge her creativity a bit too much, with some of her designs looking less Home Alone and more Saw – though when OHM comes knocking again, some of those more intense creations come in quite handy.

As soon as OHM is squared away, Demo has three priorities – getting visitation and custody established with Linda (Soldier is his lawyer), getting his mother into assisted living (keeping his child from him was the last straw, she’s out of his house), and getting sober (ish – it’s Demo).

In high school, Kelly joins the theater department as a tech and quickly makes a name for herself between inventive stagecraft and running tech rehearsals like the navy (her “firework shop explosion” in You Can’t Take It With You was distressingly realistic, but not real enough for Granny Tilly’s approval).

During her brief stint in film school, Kelly watches MacGyver religiously, critiquing his technique all the while.

Despite dropping the diploma, Kelly Phillips-DeGroot becomes a big name in B-movies, creating low-budget high-impact practical effects that blow audiences away and elevate box-office bombs to cult classics (she gets an offer from KNB EFX, but the big time just has too many rules).

Entering the “sci-fi future” of 2000, Kelly hits a CG-induced career slump and starts feeling nostalgic for her roots, inventing and improvising for function over flash, letting her creations run wild without needing to pump the brakes – so when old friends from TFI come calling, she happily changes tracks and joins up as the Trapper.

Next up – the world’s most silent six-year-old…

Hi friends! It’s time for a, you guess it, 2k words in snip time!!! woot woot :D

This is from chapter five of Mystery + Stranger! I’m actually busy for the rest of today and Monday (last AP test ahhh), so I’m not quite sure when it’ll be done. Nevertheless, enjoy! 

Neznayomets looks up with a frown. “You work with someone?”

“Why’s that so surprising to hear?”

Truthfully, Neznayomets answers, “You strike me as more of a lone wolf type.”

“Yeah, well,” Jack swallows, hand unconsciously racing toward something that Neznayomets can’t quite decipher. “It’s just her.”

“And she’s a doctor?”

“Nah. But she has connections. More than me. Knows the area a hell of a lot better.”

Caught between not wanting anything to do with Jack, and also wanting to be able to move his arm for the first time, Neznayomets eventually asks, “Who is she?”

“Name’s [] Vitez.”

“And did you greet her by holding a gun at her back?” Neznayomets sarcastically asks. After a couple beats of silence, he looks up. “That was- did you actually? What the hell is wrong with you?”

Hmmm... Wind + Water gave us a lot of bad guy manhandling Mac in the bank, and Jack showing his co-dependency by having an imaginary convo with Mac (and doing Mac's voice!). Also, Jack saving the day is always a win. I also like meeting Mac's military friends. He has so many, and they all love him. It's sweet.

And there's the cold open with Riley and Mac on a mission by themselves. We also get to see Mac's co-dependency on Jack, and Riley does Jack's voice!

Probable fave dialogue:

Riley: Mac? I hate to sound like you-know-who, but... now would be a really great time to do something awesome. Mac: I need you to start complaining. Riley: What? Mac: Yeah. Or-or tell me a long-winded story that doesn't seem to go anywhere. Riley: You want me to pretend to be Jack? Mac: Sadly, it helps me think. Riley: Uh, all right. Hey, hey, Mac, I-I love that big brain of yours, I do, but... uh, if you'd have just let me shoot them 17 doofuses outside with the two bullets I had left, we'd be kicking back on the Phoenix jet right now, sipping martinis, instead of... instead of sitting here, waiting to get our heads blown off.

Guts + Fuel + Hope is missing Jack, so there's that. On the other hand, I really enjoyed Mac blowing James off for almost the whole episode. I was disappointed when he met up with him at the end. Ugh.

I liked that this episode had real stakes, with the oxygen running out at the hospital, and I really liked the Mac hacks like getting the truck out of hole with makeshift airbags. And I liked the final solution with Mac going into the pressurized room and all that.

Probable fave dialogue:

Riley: I guess I shouldn't be surprised you're really good at this game. Mac: Actually, war requires zero skill or strategy, as you see there. It's all luck. But don't tell Jack. He thinks he has a gift. Riley: Oh. Mac: It's really entertaining to me.

Season 2, Episode 21: Wind + Water

While MacGyver is in Puerto Rico helping his friend rebuild his hurricane-damaged home, he is taken hostage in the bank his friend manages when robbers attempt to steal $2 million.

Season 3, Episode 4: Guts + Fuel + Hope

Mac and Riley must find a way to drive a tanker filled with liquid oxygen through a region occupied by rebels and deliver it to a children's hospital; Riley helps Mac decide whether or not to allow his father back into his life.

Today is World Photography Day. 

I have sorted through and picked out all my favorite photos that I’ve taken. I thought starting today I would begin posting them each day. 

I do miss photography, but I think I created a respectable body of work before I lost the energy to keep making pictures. 

Above is my favorite photo that I’ve taken out of all of them. 

There was a ton of luck involved in getting this shot. I’d say 50% knowhow, 50% luck, and 100% humidity. 

First, It’s rarely this foggy in St. Louis. I saw how cool the sun looked shining through the mist and knew I had to take some kind of photo. Otis needed to do his business, so I thought I’d take a picture of him. 

However, I knew to if I wanted to get him and the sun in the same photo, I’d need to add light to the front of Otis or else he would just be a silhouette. I was just getting a handle of flash photography, so I scrambled to get my rudimentary lighting gear together. 

I just kind of dumped it all in the general area I thought would make a good photo and went from there. I had no idea if I could even get Otis to be in that spot. He was more concerned with finding a prime pooping place. He was not responding to my attempts to get his attention. 

I set up two flashes on a special bracket inside a cheap umbrella diffuser and pointed it where I hoped he might end up. It was not on a light stand or anything. It was just laying on the ground and lightly rolling back and forth from the gentle breeze. 

Also, I didn’t have wireless triggers yet, so I had this $12 10-foot long curly cord going from my camera to the main flash. Which meant I had to lay in the wet grass and could not move from that spot or I would drag the entire flash/umbrella setup with me. 

The main flash was supposed to trigger the second flash. It uses an optical sensor that can see a signal burst of light before the full burst goes off. But it was only working once every 4 or 5 shots because there was a lot of ambient light and it was drowning out the signal burst needed to trigger it. So I had to tape a small white card on the main flash so more light would bounce in the direction of the slave flash. I was MacGyver-ing the shit out of this entire operation. 

I had to make educated guesses for all of my settings. The sun was rising fast and the light kept changing. I didn’t have a lot of time to take test shots so I got the exposure for the background dialed in and then just turned the flashes to full power hoping it would be enough to illuminate Otis.

Otis finally wandered into frame and I only had enough time to take about 12 photos from this angle. I was panicked because the flashes weren’t recharging very fast and I was missing shots. Though I still like this spooky one where you can see Otis’s breath.

It wasn’t until I loaded the files into Lightroom that I realized my experiment worked and I got a cool shot. Otis’s ears weren’t all in frame, but other than that, I thought it was perfect. 

I think this would be my favorite photo no matter what. But the fact that I overcame so many different obstacles and achieved this using some very questionable gear all while balancing tons of variables in my head... well, that makes it even more special.

I wanted a soft, warm light (2200k Edison-style bulb, its very cozy and comforting) over my bed in the corner of my room but I do not want to transfer from my wheelchair to my bed and back again every time I want to turn it on or off. Reaching with my arms too much can also trigger a bad pain flare up in my shoulder. With this I can either pull the string above my pillow or underneath my desk to turn the lamp on and off.

I cobbled together a wall mount from a couple L-brackets I had lying around and a desk lamp with a pull cord. I had a friend mount the lamp upside down, tied a string to the lamp's pull cord, ran the string through a couple small pulleys, routed it through the back of my desk (its a huge desk with my computer, art supplies, makeup, paperwork, books, etc so I use it all day), screwed a little bracket underneath the desk to hold the string up, and tied it off around the leg of the desk.

When the waitlist for public Occupational Therapy is 12 months sometimes you just need to MacGyver your own solution, right? @cripplemods
