What's the difference between tkc magic and pjo magic in your fic atlop?

An excellent question!

So, PJO magic is fundamentally based in divine power. Sea magic works for those with sea/river/lake/etc based divine power. Underworld magic works via the utilization of spirits, summoned with divine energy (can be with the aid of the divine rather than inherent divine energy tho), and sky magic works via divine connection to the sky but is less taking action and more asking for action to be taken.

TKC magic is inherent human magic. Those with an affinity for the divine sure, but who don't necessarily have divine power. They can do *more* with divine power, by calling upon the Gods and asking for aid or even hosting them, but it's not the core of their power. It uses their own power and life force in worst cases.

So basically, the primary difference is where the power comes from.

Magic in NRD is a bit of a loosely defined thing.. I do have some rules and reasons for it, but its not something I spend too much time worrying about as its mostly there to serve the themes and events in the story. However, I thought it might be fun to share that characters do manifest their magic in certain natural affinities, kind of like pokemon types! Of course, sometimes people have multiple ways their magic manifests, but usually for characters I assign one major type. Usually this also kind of helps with associating the kinds of imagery with the character as well. I haven’t been able to decide the affinity for each NRD character, but here are some anyway.

ode to abandoned projects

normally i dedicate my public facing social media accounts solely to sharing my finished artwork, but I figure some reflection on the past few years of my development as an artist would be worthwhile. I was initially trying to find an old gmod map I made (I didn't find it), and in the process I found a number of screenshots of WIPs spanning the past 7 years. for many of these projects, they were abandoned because I got too busy with school/university.

from march 2017. made in unity. I don't remember the specifics of this project. I think I was trying to make a short narrative walking sim.

from december 2017. I wanted to make a short smw romhack. I remember drawing level designs on a spare piece of paper after finishing a secondary school exam early. one day I'll make a romhack, one day...

from may 2018. I had just replayed marble blast ultra after finding it had a PC port. shortly after I found all the textures were just in the game files and could be modified easily. myself and an old friend wanted to make a 'games repainted'-esque mod. I claim full credit for every marble game since that's included a 🤔marble skin.

from march 2020. a mockup of a piece I was calling 'alignment chart' for the first time I had ever applied for a bursary. this used a mixture of generative art pieces i made in processing and graphic design. this piece is interesting to look back on because it marked the development of my art style for the first time, and the psuedo-cuneiform generator ended up being a recurring feature of my art. my application was rejected because i did not read the terms and conditions to realise it wasn't open to university students - and I was still studying computer science at the time.

from may 2020. I was aiming to participate in the low res game jam but never got to finish due to university work taking up my time. I never fleshed out the mechanics of the game, but the goal was to take care of the tree in the center of the map. it doesn't look like much, but I really pushed myself (or rather, tortured myself) by not using a game engine and writing this in C++ with raylib instead.

from april 2020. this was going to be a browser based demake of five nights at freddy's (a game I've never played and have no interest in) titled "five years at yanderedev's". I figured that it felt too close to participating in lolcowing someone and that it was in bad spirits, so I scrapped it.

from september 2020. a mockup of my homepage sharpfourth.net. I kept the logo and general layout for whats on the site currently, but didn't include the scanner warped images.

from october 2020. I wanted to make a walking sim in the quake engine, but once again, university work got in the way. however, this got me familiar with the basics of using trenchbroom (a map editor for quake), which came in very, very handy for later projects.

from october 2021. myself and some close friends had planned to make a zine detailing how to do DIY feminising HRT in Ireland (and maybe the UK). we never got around to writing it (partly because we feared potential legal repercussions for disseminating medical advice lol), but this marked a further development of my art style.

from october 2021. I had hoped to make a first person RPG in godot. once again scrapped because I got too busy with uni. I spent ages trying to implement a wonky movement system that could be exploited, being inspired by bhopping from source or strafe jumping from quake. the dialogue system was the last thing I worked on. I used trenchbroom again - this time with qodot - for making the prototype map. while making this demo, I realised the potential use of godot and trenchbroom in visual art, something i would revisit during my first gallery residency.

from march 2022. this might be the most unassuming piece in this collection, but it marks a significant turning point in my life. I was tasked with making diagrams for a group project in uni, but given that I was facing extreme burnout and apathy towards the course, I instead "doodled" with the elements of the diagram. this spiraled into me writing my zine/short-story EATARTHU, which I then used to apply for a gallery residency. I was fortunate enough to get the residency, and I dropped out of college to pursue art.

as discouraging as it might be to constantly start and abandon projects, it's important to stop and remember that ever single abandoned game or drawing or album or whatever marked a chance for you to learn and develop as an artist. one day you might very well finish a project, and it'll reflect a bit of every single abandoned one of its precursors.

A long time ago, her parents lived in a paradise village full of their own kind known as 天堂, or Tiāntáng.

Coming to Tiāntáng wouldn't be easy. It was high risk and high reward.

It was welcoming to those that were courageous enough to brave the lands before it; Caves full of beasts in mountains brimming with spirits, flower elves and forests inhabiting maddening fungi. It was magical, enchanting and ever-flourishing.

Unfortunately on that day, A mother qilin would lay their egg on the dawn of their village's death, that during one of the most beautiful acts of creation, would be the same time of a horrid destruction. Meteors had struck, houses undone and families torn apart. The mother Qilin clung to her egg, having it wrapped in a blessed blanket, one that doesn't catch fire or tear. Heat and immense pressure would soon be felt blazing on their back, their eyes closing for the final time. A elder returning from a long trip would return to see the carnage. Grief befell their eyes as he saw many of his kind either ran away or had been slain by nature's falling light. They saw no hope until they spotted the mystical egg, one of his very own kind. It was the very same egg the mother qilin had. But the mother qilin didn't make it. The egg was found under them, visible through the mother's chest. It was a lasting attempt from the mother to save the egg from when a meteor had hit them square in the back. The elder decided to adopt them, and when they hatched and become of age, he'd tell the truth. This egg was Calista.

After she reaches 13, Calista would learn the tale of what happened to her birthplace, Tiāntáng. It made her weep, knowing she'd never meet her parents. But, at least with the knowledge that she was loved and protected till the day they died, she felt some sort of closure. The elder comforted her the best he could, mourning for the loss of those he considered his children. This alone would convince him to teach her things he had known of, like magic, so she could protect herself. He taught Calista all the magic she was interested in. She became a protege at 16, being interested in Defensive and Illusionary magic, finding ways to extend it for long periods of time & enhance the quality of it. Though along the way, she finds she had a knack for Astral Projection, too. Then he taught her secretive magic, types that only he would know. Like how to warp through dimensions and timelines among many universes. This mixed with her Illusionary magic would make her live in worlds undetected. How he'd know of this magic was a mystery, but she never asked about that. Outside of magic, it wasn't all that he taught her. He would make things for her and teach how to do it too, like clothes and food. Calista greatly appreciated this among the other things he had taught her, her thirst for knowledge every growing.

When she reached 18 it was time for her to go on and find herself. Calista gathered her things, along with the wealth of knowledge she was given and left his home, the elder being shedding a tear as he sees his adopted grandchild go. She decided to live on a island that was shaped like a heart, oddly enough. She thought it was something special and wanted to preserve it's natural beauty while looking for a place to call home in it. While she did, she found The Eternal Lotus. Awestruck of it's beauty & potential, Calista decided to nurture it the best she could so it could bloom as she made her house out of felled trees with magic.

It would work better than she thought. It grew bigger and bigger and bigger. Over the size of a mansion. She was astonished at what was in front of her. She was sure this sort of plant wasn't supposed to be this big at all!

Writing a letter to the elder, she sealed it and awaited for a response. He came as quickly as he could. A Large, lotus flower, emitting aphrodisiac spores no less? It piques his interest, and he and Calista soon finds that this was a Concept or Aspect in the making... Something beyond mortal comprehension.

It would be years later as she learns all about it, and in those years, she's found love several times. Some farmers, some warriors. Even though she outlived every single one, she was devoted to each and every one of them. Most of the children hadn't made it, as they either didn't inherit her genes or if they simply weren't strong enough to last long. It was odd. She didn't know what was going on. Was it her? was it her darlings?No, it couldn’t be. If there was any issues they had that would have made it happen, they would have told her. Or maybe... maybe was it The Lotus's fault? Looking through the books she had, she finds a spell that would protect the weak. She finds this would be helpful, since that The lotus fits the category of a supernatural organism with overwhelming power that makes those with weaker immune systems ill. I.e, young mortals. Children.

This would fix the issue and children born in the island would live fulfilling lives should they chose to stay with her. Much like... Aria. A Goldensoul Jub-Jub Harpy that was born near the coast of Peculia. She was born ill, but Calista found her to be ill from a different source. When they had found her egg, it was cracked. Like they were dropped… or purposely kicked away, leaving them to be stumbled upon on her island, somehow. The implications made her feel sick to her stomach, Taking in the harpy egg, she began to reads some books on how to care for one. Constructing a nest of warm pillows and blankets, she sat on the egg to keep it warm. Calista did this like their birth mother would have, if they had any heart like she did. Then, There was Chloe. She was found in a stranded boat that somehow washed up on the shore of her island, bundled up in soft silks and wool. They were freezing. Calista assumed their birth was in a cold environment. They dashed to their home to get them safe and warm, even finessing some milk and a baby bottle so they could properly feed the baby. (More info about Aria and Chloe will be in their own bios!)

She had a feeling both were versions of herself. Something deep in her guts told her that these two were from alternate universes parallel to her own. But seeing them be unwanted... It stirred something within their heart that made empathy grow in waves. If they were indeed versions of herself, then she hoped that how she raised them had let them know they were loved, despite their birth parents' not being present in their lives.

Also! She isn't able to leave her island. The way that she communicates is via astral projection. Calista is able to use her protective abilities in this state and can astral project anywhere if she truly thinks of a spot to be in. Does she wish to be in one of the most popular parks in Japan? She'll pop right in Kegon Falls, admiring the view. Just an example.

Even as a hybrid, she is able to walk on water just like full blooded Qilin are. While there are no waterfalls in her island, you can be sure she can walk up one.

haven't tried to draw Khalan's dad Jal in a while. was thinking a lot about why I've always pictured him to have unnatural golden eyes even though that's not a real color that people have, and I eventually decided on a new piece of lore :0 (putting it below a cut because it got kinda long lol)

I think the humans from Khalan's home world aren't exactly what we would consider "fully" human - they all have an element of otherworldliness to them that they don't notice because it's normal to them. specifically, some strange eye and hair colors (though the latter isn't seen much due to the fact that the people of Malja are clean-shaven). so what we'd consider to be unnatural is just part of who they are, hence why Khalan and Jal both have bright eye colors despite them being loosely (and I mean loosely) based on ancient Middle-Eastern ethnicity.

on a semi-related note, this otherworldy nature also manifests in the form of a latent magical affinity that resides within all of the humans of Malja, as they used to be more closely-related to the jinn before evolving into their own people. this is why Khalan's visions are as strange as they are (being able to experience the memories of other people as well as see into the future), as it's a form of that ancient magic resurfacing in a unique way.

both of these concepts come together to not only explain why Jal and Khalan's eyes aren't a more natural deep brown like we would expect them to be, but also why Khalan assumes that Aya is his biological daughter when he sees her in his visions despite her bright, unnaturally-pink hair. ;o;

idk I thought it was fun to just go all out with the fantasy elements and make it so that the rules of the world Khalan is from are anything I want them to be xD this doesn't really have anything to do with the art itself but it was something that was on my mind while drawing it, so that's why I had to share :'0
