It was supposed to be a normal enough outing.

Pick a world, get a hold of the specific magical components they needed, and leave. But it was never that easy, was it?

Evangeline was well accustomed to stares, especially out and about in Japan- She scarcely blended in. 'Who's that little white child with the parasol', she was sure they thought-- And it was a lot more efficient to send Mizuki or even Karin out as a result, but she needed to move her legs. So it was that she found herself walking through the city streets, ignoring the murmurs and stares, passing through the crowd as if it were water... And ignoring the occasional magical girls' essence she could feel as she moved. They were irrelevant right now.

Soon enough, though, she felt something new and different-- Certainly the magical essence of a magical girl, but twisted. And not in the ways she'd experienced, the twisted magic of a Witch or the Demons that sometimes called these worlds home... Something she hadn't experienced before.

She could feel the stench of darkness from a fair distance by now, even if it wasn't quite the same as her own magic.

"Heh."

Her eyes dart around for a moment, searching for the source of that peculiar source of magic, before she laid eyes on her- A girl, not far away, rather plain in appearance, but undeniably the one she was looking for.

She makes a beeline for her, not even bothering to mask her interest, and clamps a small, surprisingly cold hand around her arm like a vise.

"You, girl. Walk with me. We have things to discuss."

I'm almost done with Going Postal rn and I'm enjoying it so thoroughly, but one thing about Terry Pratchett (as well as any pithy writer frugal with their words) is that it's frustratingly hard to post about or articulate analysis for without just posting exactly what they already wrote with minimal context

i know i said i was happy about how mel's story went, but the more i think about it the less i'm sure about that. this is very much connected to how the themes of classism and wealth disappeared in s2, but mel in the beginning was the epitome of piltover. she wanted to advance piltover to prove herself to her mother. to "put piltover—" and by extension herself, "—on the map."

she wanted wealth just to have it. and i'm not blaming her for anything that happened, especially with hextech! she, just like jayce and viktor, could not have known what it would lead to. i mean yeah heimerdinger said so but who the hell listens to heimerdinger? but anyway i think mel changed throughout s1, much in thanks to jayce. by the end she's become more cognisant of the mistreatment of zaunites. she's the first to vote for their peace. she was a good person all along but now she knows how to act on it. it's also seen more in s2 act 1. when she covers her painting with gold, it's symbolic—she won't act according to what her mother might think. she won't let her desire for approval dictate her anymore.

so somehow i wish those themes were. continued, somehow? like again they were dropped not just with mel but the whole show and it makes her story a off to me. there's no meaningful commentary on war or classism or how her ideology stands opposite to her mother's. like some people have said, it feels like she doesn't have much agency, even if she is really cool. and that to me is a shame because agency felt like her thing. "to shape your own destiny" as she says to jayce in s1. i know her collaborating with the black rose (but not fully joining them) and learning magic is supposed to represent becoming independent from her mother, taking her own path, but some other aspects of her character were thrown away... the more i think about it the more i'm thinking they kind of #girlboss-ed her a little bit. maybe to sell another champion. i can't help but feel like even though i enjoyed seeing her on screen, the payoff didn't feel proportionally satisfying compared to her setup in s1.

It's not a magical girl deconstruction if it's about teen girls turning into skeletons. It IS a magical girl deconstruction if the creator has strong opinions about Tuxedo Mask.

The scene where WoTW and Howl were running across the yard might have been so confusing and creepy though the Megan's point of view.

Imagine sitting at home, minding your business, washing dishes or playing in the yard, and suddenly this weird-looking lady, dressed as she just escaped from some kind of really unique and rich troop, wearing a dark, gorgeous, medieval-like dress and high heels, that's almost impossible to buy at the store nowadays just... appears before your eyes.

She stands on the grass, leaning on the swing and you're already reaching for your home phone to call the police because how the hell did she find a way into your house?? Except you didn't have enough time to do it because right after that some kind of weird, physical force starts dragging you to this strange, creepy woman, and you want to tell her to go to hell with her stupid tricks, but you can't.

And you kids, waking right alongside you, cannot do anything, too. You can't all possibly be mad, can you?

An when it starts to get even weirder and unavoidable, your jobless, potential-losing piece of a brother, comes into a scene, jumping through the damn fence, dressed in the same weird-looking costume, as If he escaped the same wery troupe (seriously, If you weren't so worried about your kids and unnatural forces right now, you'd think what would happen If people saw this atrociously long sleeves and eye-burning colours), and just...runs at the mysterious woman right away, dragging away your daughter in some kind of sport-like movement. Your brother and the woman then start running across the yard in the most ridiculous way possible.

The force stops. Your brother and the woman go out of sight. You take your kids into the house and pretend this never, ever happened in your lifes.
