Resources for Poll Closing Times 🕣 🗳
If you miss Net 1.0 you'll be happy to see that it lives on at this no nonsense site.
The Green Papers: 2024 Poll Closing Times for Statewide offices and Congress General Election Chronologically
First of all, it seems to have nothing to do with the useless Green Party despite the Green in the name.
The updated site, going strong for about 25 years, gives us the closing times converted into each US time zone – plus UTC/GMT. It even pays attention to states which are located in more than one time zone – hence more than one listing for some states. Those of us who have chafed under Eastern Zone hegemony need not do any converting here. 🙂
—··——
This from Slate is a bit more typical as it includes analysis and commentary – not just times (which are all given only in Eastern).
An Hour-by-Hour Guide to What We’ll Probably Learn on Election Night
—··——
The National Conference of State Legislatures has a listing of when each state begins processing and counting its absentee and mail-in ballots. They provide an explanation of the differences between processing and counting. Some states are prompt in counting these, others – not so much.
Table 16: When Absentee/Mail Ballot Processing and Counting Can Begin
A useful table but I often get 524 error codes there. Possibly a result of heavy volume which they're not used to getting. Fortunately, there's a recent archiving of this page at Internet Archive.
—··——
Polls in Georgia close at 0000 UTC/GMT (6 PM CST). They close in North Carolina 30 minutes later. Both states should have discernible results relatively quickly. Biden narrowly won Georgia and Trump narrowly won North Carolina in 2020. So results for 2024 could be compared against those as they come in.

actually i'm making a post about this in case it might be new and helpful information to someone:
If you are living overseas, there is a good chance you can still vote in your home country's elections via mail-in ballot.
if you think this may apply to you, NOW is the time to look into getting yourself on the overseas electoral register so you can receive your ballot for the next election.
this has been a PSA.

Florida man convicted of voting with his late father's ballot in 2020 presidential election
(As originally published with additional photos, Mon, December 11th 2023, 6:50 PM EST) WILDWOOD, Fla. (TND) A man in Florida was convicted of voting with his late father’s ballot in the 2020 presidential election and his lawyer, a former state representative who calls himself a “strong conservative fighter,” filed for a new trial on the same day. According to the complaint by the Sumter…

Just putting this out for anyone in Nevada.
By the way, I saw in the news today that thousands of mail-in ballots in Nevada can't yet be certified because the signature on the envelope doesn't match the name on the voter registration. They suggested that this could be attributed to young people not being used to signing their name.
So if you're a young person in a swing state who voted by mail, it'd be a good idea to check that there isn't a problem with your ballot. They official said they'll be contacting all of the voters in question, but you could be proactive in making sure.

Guess who's excited to get their ballot in the mail tomorrow? Me! So I slapped together a quick comic, as well as a map based off of this and this. A list of when same day registration is available is at the bottom of this article.
But also: wow, early voting stuff is so confusing! For example, I get my ballot in the mail tomorrow, and I can immediately mail it back. But if I want to drop it off in person, I need to either go to a special ballot drop box by city hall, or wait for early in-person voting sites to open, which isn't until Oct 22nd for my state.
Or like, early voting in Louisiana is apparently from Oct 16 to Oct 29th? And then there's a week of no voting, and then polls open again on Nov 5th? Or like how the only day you can register and then immediately vote is Oct 26th?
Anyway, best way to figure out the info for your area is to check your state and county's election website. I've found usvotefoundation.org to have clear fact sheets for each state (including ID requirements, polling location finders, as well as direct links to state election websites): https://www.usvotefoundation.org/state-voter-information . You can also jump to each state's election websites via usa.gov, or by searching directly, though some websites are more confusing than others.
Happy voting!
Oh, and here's the voter registration deadlines map from last time, in case you haven't registered and want to register. Oct 7th is the last day for a bunch of states!

#us election 2024#last election cycle i literally found out my county's early voting dates via an ad on my grocery store shopping cart#anyway it's time to research ballot measures!! and city council!#as an introvert i love mail-in ballots bc i get to curl up on the couch on a sunday afternoon to do my voting#I'm glad my state makes it so easy#but good luck to those states where it's hard#unfortunately the only way to make it easier in those states is by voting in better state legislatures and election boards#i actually had the map done early last week but i wanted to draw a little comic to go with it lol#and then i procrastinated and now it's 2am on oct 7th oops

A fire was also set at a ballot box in Portland, Oregon where three ballots were damaged.
"The Portland Police Bureau reported that officers and firefighters responded to a fire in one ballot drop box at about 3:30 a.m. and determined an incendiary device had been placed inside. Multnomah County Elections Director Tim Scott said a fire suppressant inside the drop box protected nearly all the ballots; only three were damaged, and his office planned to contact those voters to help them obtain replacement ballots.
A few hours later, across the Columbia River in Vancouver, television crews captured footage of smoke pouring out of a ballot box at a transit center. Vancouver is the biggest city in Washington's 3rd Congressional District, the site of what is expected to be one of the closest U.S. House races in the country, between first-term Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Republican challenger Joe Kent."

Today is Spirit Day, a national day of action to stand with LGBTQ+ youth against bullying. 💜🌈 One way we can fight for our LGBTQ+ community is to VOTE on the issues impacting us most.
Last year, more than 500 state bills were introduced to target LGBTQ+ rights, and 75 became law. The people WE elect have a direct impact on our community.
So make a plan to vote today at WeAll.Vote/voterhub — and let’s vote LOUD and PROUD this year! 🗳️
