when shopping for parts (which is rare by itself, shit's expensive) I am loyal to nothing but technical specifications, and even then it's damn near indecipherable without the computer's "about this computer" page and/or device manager also pulled up
why is shopping for computer shit so difficult like what the hell is 40 cunt thread chip 3000 processor with 32 florps of borps and a z12 yummy biscuits graphics drive 400102XXDRZ like ok um will it run my programmes
#at some point I might have to get a new CPU and dear lord I am not looking forward to that#although not any time soon because apparently not having the specs to run windows 11#is preventing the system from just installing it automatically without my permission#let's let that sit until smarter minds than I have found a eay to scrub the malware out of that software

Mengenal Virus Komputer: Tidak Seseram Zombie, Tapi Tetap Harus Waspada

The TL;DR is that don't download random operating systems online if they're not directly from the source because ANYTHING could be on them, it's not safe. I guess they can't be scanned for malware the way other programs can?

Hey everyone it seems there a malicious individual trying to hack the sims cc community again and fill it with malware you need to stay vigilant as a creator and a downloader so
i have some tips for both to stay safe while downloading:
1- sims cc file extension is always .Package never download anything that is .exe
2- do not auto unpack zip files and rar files into your mods folder directly, open each zip or rar individually check the file extensions and drag them to your mods folder one by one
3- the only mods that have a .ts4script extension are ones that affect gameplay or how the game works, understand that if you are downloading cas or bb items you shouldn't have a .ts4script file
4- if you are downloading gameplay mods that do have .ts4script make sure that A) the creator hasn't announced on their pages that its infected B) you are downloading from a link provided by the creator of the mods themselves not something off of google or a link you got sent and make sure dates of upload match dated of announcements
5- if the mod or cc creator has retired and hasn't posted for a while LOOK AT THE DATES OF THE UPLOAD if it has been "updated recently" after the creator has left the community its most likely re-uploaded by a hacker and infected
6- download mod gaurd by Twisted mexi and keep it updated and keep your windows defender or malware detector Program up to date and always running do not disable it
7- make sure everything you download comes from a direct link from the cc creator, in this day and age do not trust link shortners, adfly, linkverse, etc get the universal bypass extension and ublock extension to stay safe but genuinely NEVER CLICK ON THOSE no matter how much the creator reassures you its safe it. is. NOT.
8- this is more of a general saftey precaution but, create a system restore point weekly before you run the game with new mods that way if anything happens you could have a chance to restore your windows to an earlier date before you downloaded anything.
9- BACK UP YOUR SHIT im serious right now either weekly or monthly put your files somewhere safe like a usb a storage card a hard drive even an online cloud if you dont have any of the previous.
10- files you should back up are your media from games and media everything else, any mods, games saves, work files, passwords, saved bookmarks, any documents txt files word files pdfs, links you saved, brushes or actions for Photoshop if you have any, any digital bills or certificates if you have any, and keep a physical list of all programs you have installed and where you installed them from
11- turn on any 2 factor authentication and security measures for any account you have
12- google and firefox have the option to check your paswords and emails against any data leaks USE THIS FEATURE and change any leaked passwords
13- regularly check your logged in sessions to make sure all the logged in devices or computers are yours and log out any that aren't and any old devices or unused sessions do this for every website and app you have an account on if available
14- change your passwords often. I know this is a hassle i know its hard to come up with new passwords but changing your passwords every few months will help you against anything mention previously that wasn't detected.
15- and as a cc creator check your cc and the accounts you host cc on and its uplaod and update dates make sure nothing has been changed without your permission :(
16- generally try not to get swept up in the "i must get it" fever you do not need to "shop" for mods weekly or monthly you do not need to download everything by that one creator you do not need to download new cc everytime you want to make a sim, im guilty of this so i know how hard it is to resist but take a breath and think "do i want this or do i need it" before downloading.
These are prevention methods i cant claim they are 100% will prevent any hacking but its better to be safe than sorry and these do keep you safe so
Brought to you by someone who has had their laptop ruined and data leaked from downloading cc once upon a time

you never should've clicked that link.
but curiosity had its claws in you, and that night, while you were alone in your dimly lit room, you let it win. just a quick look, just to see what was really lurking on the dark web. that's what you told yourself.
one wrong click and your screen glitched. blacked out for half a second. then a text box popped up with white letters against a pitch-black background.
???: cute pajamas
your breath caught in your throat. the cursor blinked, waiting. you didn’t type anything or move at all. you simply stared as your heart hammered against your chest. your fingers twitched toward the laptop lid.
another message.
???: go ahead and close it
???: i’ll still be here
your skin prickled. and then, at the top of your screen, you noticed the tiny, glowing green dot. the camera light.
without thinking, you slammed your laptop shut so fast it nearly slid off your desk. scrambled back, stomach twisting. no way. no fucking way.
on the next day, you took your laptop to a repair shop. paid extra to have it cleaned, reset, scrubbed of whatever digital parasite had burrowed into it. but then the guy behind the counter just frowned, clicking through your system. “there’s nothing here,” he said. “no malware, no viruses. your laptop’s clean.”
all that really needed to be repaired was the tiny crack on your screen after you shut it so fast.
tomura was bored.
he had planned to fuck with you, that was all.
another dumbass poking around where they shouldn’t, clicking shit they know they're not supposed to. he almost closed out after the first few days of watching.
that was until you started talking to yourself when you were alone, making little noises when you stretched, humming under your breath while working on assignments. the way you’d pause videos to read comments, or sit cross-legged in bed while scrolling on your phone.
it was stupid. pointless, really.
but for some reason, it was hard to look away.
so he didn’t.
he watched you like a habit he couldn’t quit.
and eventually, you started leaving your laptop open more often. but the paranoia still lingered, coiling in your stomach when you were alone too long. that feeling of being watched never really went away.
a couple nights later, your screen lit up again on its own.
there it was again.
???: how long r u gonna keep ignoring me?
you glared at the webcam, hoping he could feel it through the screen, as your fingers hovered over the keyboard and typed.
y/n: how long are you gonna keep watching me, creep?
tomura laughed at that.
???: so she does talk
what the fuck was going on right now? your hands were sweating. you wiped them on your thighs, forced yourself to keep your eyes narrowed at him.
if he could still message you, still access your screen, then he knew everything. your files, your passwords, your location.
the realization sent a cold shiver down your spine.
y/n: what do you want?
this time, the reply was almost instant.
???: already got what i want
tomura wasn’t sure what exactly had changed. watching had been enough, at first. knowing he could listen in on your rambles, see the way you chewed your lip while concentrating on a homework, the absent-minded way you twirled a strand of hair when you were bored—it was all pretty amusing.
but he wanted more.
you fascinated him. the way you blushed when you saw a cringey scene in a show, the way your brows knitted when you felt troubled. all your unfiltered reactions.
people were so fake, so performative, but you—alone in your space, forgetting he was right there—you just felt so real and right to him.
and while tomura has seen plenty of people, it was rare for him to actually see the real version of someone and continue to grow attracted to them.
he wanted to see you up close. wanted to make you react to him.
it was a crowded café near campus. you had been staring out the window absently, hands wrapped around your drink as your eyes focused on whatever reading you were trying to dissect on your laptop.
you looked so at peace that tomura almost didn't want to ruin the moment for you.
but he couldn't help it as he lifted his phone and typed on his screen.
your device buzzed with one new message.
???: found you

!Important Warning!
These Days some Mods containing Malware have been uploaded on various Sites.
The Sims After Dark Discord Server has posted the following Info regarding the Issue:
+++
Malware Update: What We Know Now To recap, here are the mods we know for sure were affected by the recent malware outbreak: "Cult Mod v2" uploaded to ModTheSims by PimpMySims (impostor account) "Social Events - Unlimited Time" uploaded to CurseForge by MySims4 (single-use account) "Weather and Forecast Cheat Menu" uploaded to The Sims Resource by MSQSIMS (hacked, real account) "Seasons Cheats Menu" uploaded to The Sims Resource by MSQSIMS (hacked, real account)
Due to this malware using an exe file, we believe that anyone using a Mac or Linux device is completely unaffected by this.
If the exe file was downloaded and executed on your Windows device, it has likely stolen a vast amount of your data and saved passwords from your operating system, your internet browser (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Firefox, and more all affected), Discord, Steam, Telegram, and certain crypto wallets. Thank you to anadius for decompiling the exe.
To quickly check if you have been compromised, press Windows + R on your keyboard to open the Run window. Enter %AppData%/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/UserData in the prompt and hit OK. This will open up the folder the malware was using. If there is a file in this folder called Updater.exe, you have unfortunately fallen victim to the malware. We are unware at this time if the malware has any function which would delete the file at a later time to cover its tracks.
To quickly remove the malware from your computer, Overwolf has put together a cleaner program to deal with it. This program should work even if you downloaded the malware outside of CurseForge. Download SimsVirusCleaner.exe from their github page linked here and run it. Once it has finished, it will give you an output about whether any files have been removed.
+++
For more Information please check the Sims After Dark Server News Channel! Or here https://scarletsrealm.com/malware-mod-information/
TwistedMexi made a Mod to help detect & block such Mods in the Future: https://www.patreon.com/posts/98126153
CurseForge took actions and added mechanics to prevent such Files to be uploaded, so downloading there should be safe.
In general be careful, where and what you download, and do not download my Mods at any other Places than my own Sites and my CurseForge Page.

i do wish people would offer more coherent reasons for people to switch to Linux other than "Hurr durr AI scary bad" or some vague security thing that isn't relevant to 90% of people who use a computer.
"Windows is literally malware" it is a kind of to moderately invasive operating system that you don't like. incidentally it's also what the vast majority of people use!
have you maybe considered more grounded approaches like "if your pc is below windows 11 specs try Linux instead of throwing it out!" or "linux is fun!" or "lots of things run on linux so getting familiar with it can be useful" or "it can really speed up an old computer"
anyway shout-out to every time a Tumblr panic campaign "windows is EVIL and is going to steal ALL your data you need to delete it RIGHT NOW because AI and MALWARE" post goes around and then nothing happens except windows gets a little more invasive in a way that people don't really care about or notice
#my really controversial opinion is that windows is largely fine and if there was a FOSS version of windows it would be incredible#literally just add more customisation and less bloat and it'd be a great operating system#and for the vast majority of people it *is* a great operating system

At this point, after this has happened a dozen times, why the hell is anyone pushing any update that wide that fast. They didn't try 10 nearby computers first? Didn't do zone by zone? Someone needs to be turbo fired for this and a law needs to get written.
The "this has happened a dozen times" really isn't correct. This one is unprecedented.
But yes the "how the hell could it go THAT bad?" is the thing everyone with even a little software experience is spinning over. Because it is very easy to write code with a bug. But that's why you test aggressively, and you roll out cautiously - with MORE aggressive testing and MORE cautious rollout the more widely-impacting your rollout would be.
And this is from my perspective in product software, where my most catastrophic failure could break a product, not global systems.
Anti-malware products like Crowdstrike are highly-privileged, as in they have elevated trust and access to parts of the system that most programs wouldn't usually have - which is something that makes extremely thorough smoke-testing of the product way MORE important than anything I've ever touched. It has kernel access. This kind of thing needs testing out the wazoo.
I can mostly understand the errors that crop up where like, an extremely old machine on an extremely esoteric operating system gets bricked because the test radius didn't include that kind of configuration. But all of Windows?
All of Windows, with a mass rollout to all production users, including governments?
There had to be layers upon layers of failures here. Especially given how huge Crowdstrike is. And I really want to know what their post-mortem analysis ends up being because for right now I cannot fathom how you end up with an oversight this large.

I finally got a new laptop! Yay! My geriatric 8-year-old can finally be sent to the retirement home (aka gathering dust in the closet because what if I need it later). And now I can run programs and perform tasks without it taking a dog's age! :D
But I did notice something in getting everything set up.
I've been a staunch Linux lad since I was very little--one of the few things my father and I actually agree on. And the new laptop came pre-installed with Windows 11, as most new non-Macs do, so I decided to partition a bit of the drive for it rather than wiping it completely, just in case I need Windows compatibility for school or work stuff, even if I spend the majority of my time in Ubuntu. (I had wanted to do that with my old machine, actually, but something went horrendously wrong in the process and it took two days to fix and my laptop briefly did not have a functioning OS on it at all lol.)
Now, I find Windows... unpleasant to use. And obviously part of that is just that I'm not familiar with it--the last time I had Windows on a personal computer was when I was 6 years old, and that thing ran Windows 2000 with a genuine CRT monitor and it was not connected to the internet and I spent my time playing King's Quest and MS Paint. I don't know where things are anymore, and the UX seems pretty uninterested in telling me.
Another issue is, of course, how bloated with ads and spyware it's become in recent iterations. I see where people are coming from when they decide to stick with Windows 7 or Vista or some other older version, even if I disagree with them for security and malware reasons--"person on previous version of Windows" is by far the largest and juiciest target for all manner of bad actors online.
But I think a really big core part of the problem is this: modern Windows is speaking a different language than I am. And the language it's speaking is that of phones, not of computers.
I only spent enough time on Windows to get it set up and strip away all the permissions I possibly could, and in that time I could tell: the default user Microsoft is designing this system for is people who are more familiar with Android and Apple than they are with a desktop computer. They made me log in with my email, rather than creating a device-specific profile. When I created my password they didn't even call it a password, they called it a "Hello Windows PIN". The format of the Settings page UI is nigh-identical to the one on my phone, right down to the list of access permissions siloed away by app (and yes, everything is called an app--no programs, no functions, no systems, no app*lications*, nothing else). I had to check a specific box to be able to look through my entire computer's file system, for crying out loud, rather than just browsing my Pictures and Downloads!
Hey, Windows! My laptop! Is not! A phone! And I don't want it to be! This is a computer OS for people who hate computers and I. HATE IT!
#People I am begging you. I understand everything is Windows now. But please use Linux#There are many different versions nowadays and lots of them are very user-friendly#Ubuntu is the one I use and it's lovely#Mint is another very good one#If you need to keep a little Windows around that's fine. Work and school stuff is often Windows only. I get it#But if you're browsing the web or playing Steam games or writing in Word docs or whatever? On your own time?#Linux. LibreOffice. Just use them. They are so much better

Just found out that Microsoft has been added as a primary target for boycotting by BDS. This includes their software, games, and services.
I'm currently on a Windows system and can't hop immediately to another OS as some of my programs are still windows exclusive. Almost all Windows Telemetry is disabled on my computer. My plan is to later on switch to Linux after finding alternatives or at least find some compatibility with Linux for these programs. Not to mention backup alternatives.
No Edge, switched to Firefox and Vivaldi. Fuck Copilot.
And while BDS did ask for people to stop buying Microsoft games, there is some small leeway for those who have already bought them before the boycott: you can keep playing as long as you don't buy future Microsoft products or games (source). This includes micro-transactions, don't buy them. Minecraft Realms and Minecoins, too.
Since I own Minecraft (bought back in 2012), this one hurts a bit since I started back playing it as an escape. Have been avoiding Realms and Minecoins, but I'm still concerned about Telemetry. I can avoid Minecraft's two official desktop launchers - one from the Microsoft store and the other as direct download from Mojang's site. There are alternative launchers (including cracked versions) that allow you to continue playing Minecraft without Microsoft "seeing" you playing it, even without an account. Look for no account registration launchers or offline launchers like UltimMC or Prism Launcher. Avoid TLauncher because it may contain malware. You will miss out on servers, though.
There's also the No-Telemetry mod if you still want to play on either of the official launchers or if you are using a launcher that still requires an account.
Vintage Story, Luanti, VoxeLibre (mod for Luanti) are good alternatives if you want something Minecraft-like but completely disconnected from Microsoft. Mods for Luanti can be found here. Mods for Vintage Story can be found here.
Here's a post on what you can do if you are looking for alternatives to Microsoft's software and tools.
Kinda of a reminder, You can participate in small parts of a boycott if there's some things you aren't ready to move on or if you can't find replacements. Like, if the only thing you have done is letting go of is Edge and Minecraft, but not Windows, that's fine. If it's just Edge, that's fine. Just do your best!
#my posts#microsoft boycott#using a cracked launcher and moved my forever world backup to it#everything still works!#I only play on singleplayer anyway#also using no-telemetry just in case#might try luanti later as its the closest to MC#palestine#gaza#bds movement#boycott divest sanction

*angry Linux user voice* Windows? more like microshaft winblows! the whole OS should basically be classified as malware! you're literally a sheep if you use it.
and MacOS?? MacOS is literally designed so kids can use it, it's the baby operating system for adult babies *getting audibly excited* you might as well put on your pamps and suck on a paci if you use MacOS!

good commentary on the crowdstrike incident
Yes, this is good technical commentary. It's noticeable that different companies have had very different levels of difficulty managing the incident and preparation will certainly have played a role, along with the timing and the number and distribution of systems.
For the less technical (because I've noticed some confused reblogs): Crowdstrike is an enterprise-level, i.e. for large organisations managing many computer systems, set of antivirus tools. It is very good - this is why many, many large organisations with high security needs (such as banks and airlines) use it. Since it defends against malware and viruses, its tools are constantly receiving automatic updates.
About eighteen hours ago, one of those automatic updates accidentally blue-screened Windows machines and servers worldwide that had one particular Crowdstrike tool installed. This was quickly deemed to be fixable without too much hassle, except for one really major issue: individual systems need someone with technical expertise to start them up *directly, in person* in order to be fixed. Imagine you're an airline with computers at every airport. A bank with ATMs nationwide. A retail chain with computers in every store...
Anyway, this is going to take some organisations a while to fix. It is extremely, extremely fixable! But it's gonna take a minute. And some of the orgs not directly affected are reliant on other ones which are. So yeah, soz to IT teams everywhere about their weekend.
#technology#crowdstroke#is what I've seen it called other places and is very funny to me so I'll steal it#computer security#nb: this definitely isn't a hack or a plot or whatever. it's a fuck-up#those happen. it is honestly to crowdstrike's credit this is the first time it's happened to them in a major way
