She watches him eat for a moment, feeling the familiar satisfaction of a job well done when seeing someone enjoy what you've made for them. Reaching down she rubs his shoulder before moving to grab her mug of half drunk coffee to move back and sit beside him on the couch.

Now this was just... nice. Spending time with her son in law like this. It was pleasant and she knew Charlie would appreciate knowing they got along as well as they did.

Pim nods, appreciative that she had wiped his eyes for him, he managed to let a couple of tears fall as she did this. He looks down at the food, and immediately starts to eat.

He tries not to be too fast with eating, but he’s so hungry he’s practically scarfing down the chorizo.

Finn has used many swords. Each unique in origin and power. Some are epic, some are bland.

Regal Sword: Just a regular sword Finn used after buying it before sneaking off into a dungeon. The gray bulb was originally red until his mom ate the color.

Ice Sword: A Christmas present from Grandpa Simon. Ice King made it, adding a defending spell from the crown. This sword was unfortunately destroyed by Scorcher after accidently hiring him and the spell flew back into the crown. So, Finn went back to using the Regal Sword before getting the next one.

Abadeer Demon Sword: Finn gets it during the second time meeting Grandfather Hunson. (The first time, Hunson tried to bond with him by trying to suck all the souls in Ooo) Hunson gives it to the little "prince" before making the offer to Marcy in taking over the Nightosphere. Events go down normally, even Finn wearing the amulet. So, Finn gets a new sword and trauma that day. This dark blade is infused with Hunson's magic, giving it power to suck up souls, chop ghosts and overpower even the strongest of foes. Marceline, however, destroys this one after finding out that the Demon Sword was corrupting her son to do evil, finding out Finn's been sneaking out dungeon crawling even before he got the sword. Though the effect was taking way slower than Hunson expected for some reason. (*cough* Comet *cough*)

Candy Cane Sword: With the Evil Sword Curse still lingering on Finn, Marceline banned her son from going into dungeons. He went to the Candy Kingdom to look for any thrill, but not too extreme as he's still a good-hearted hero. He went to Princess Bubblegum to see if there's anything he could do. As Hero of Ooo, she saw an opportunity and gave him a job as a knight, giving him a new sword. Though he had a breakdown and quits after enduring trauma from the second zombie incident, but he still kept the sword.

Celestial Light: Seeing the curse becoming worse for Finn, Marcy feared she was going to lose her son like she lost her father-figure. She looked through the Enchiridion and the library to find at least something to help him, even a little. (Now, I didn't think of a full story here, but they end up in another dimension, earns the orb and it lifts his curse) Made of purifying light, Finn could shape it into any tool he willed it to with a proud shout of its name. Celestial Light was destroyed when it stabbed into the Lich's heart, erasing him and the blade from existence.

Biotech Sword: Finn gets this sword from when he, his mom and BMO somehow ended up in space... on the Drift. At first look, it's a cool looking sword, but it can adjust its effectiveness from able to block attacks to slicing anything like hot butter. It can also create arcs of energy with every slash Finn makes in close combat or ranged and release shockwaves with every hit if he wants to. If the sword has been knocked away or just out of reach in general, it will fly back to him with just a thought.

Soul Sword: Created by Peppermint Bulter before the Lich War, a soul trapper. Finn used it on the PepperLich to end to war and dumped it in the same volcano where Magic Man threw Patience St Pim after she used him as an elemental spell battery, but not before turning her into an avocado.

Biotech Arm Sword: Shortly after losing his arm, the Biotech Sword merged with the severed appendage and immediately reattached itself onto him, giving him a hard light blade with the same features as before. At one point after, he discovered it could customize its appearance, giving himself claws.

There was that one sword he made with the Sister of Flame (Flame Princess), but he never used it and gave it to her after she overthrew her father.

And that's all the sword MMAU Finn has used.

all about clementine! (charred peaches baby!)

she was an accident baby, but they both decided to keep her because they were pretty well into their relationship at this point, had a house, and were kinda bored of just being bum adults

she was born in spring, and looked like a newborn puppy (pink nose, closed eyes, downy fur). the moment charlie saw her, he was enamoured. he was basically born to be a girldad anyway.

she was like raising a puppy and toddler (ever seen wolf children?) teething specifically was horrible, she ruined so much furniture and a lot of charlie’s clothes

charlie carried her around a lot when she was a baby, taking her around to do normal things like playing video games (on his leg or chest as he uses the controller) or walking around smiling friends hq with her strapped

peach is more of an authorative and realistic parent, but she’s not less fun. she’s more likely to teach clem, taking her to museums or talking to her about bugs at the park. she likes to talk to her like an adult, explaining to her why she needs to do things like be healthy

charlie is the fun parent and treats her like a “little buddy”, sometimes forgetting he has to parent. but he’s going to be there for her and cheer her up when she falls from her bike and scrapes her knee, acting like a real dad

speaking of girldad, he doesn’t adore her girly interests but like with his girlfriend, he may endulge. he can’t say no to her big puppy eyes as she begs her dad to join a tea party as “princess charles the fifthtenth”

he loves her little paws and misses them as she gets older. he would hold her paws and revel in how much smaller she was overall

movie nights are big with this family. charlie, peach, and clementine sleeping together in bed all cuddled up, with the movie playing in the background as more white noise now. peach is sleeping on charlie’s shoulder and charlie’s dozing off on the couch snoring, while clementine is curled up on their laps, hugging the popcorn bowl with her tail wrapped around her

as clem gets older, she and charlie bond over video games. he’d teach her young about them, and if she liked girly ones he’d play with her no problem but he also teaches her shooters (peach is fine with it, better to play with dad than with randos online)

they have a little minecraft server together i think and clementine has her own room but they made her a bed in charlie’s cause she likes being with her dad

charlie is the: “hey kiddo whatcha got there” and peach is the “how was school today baby” you get what i mean

when he brings her as a baby to sf headquarters, pim is like “oh how lovely she’s so sweet” and allan kinda sticks his nose up but she grabs his snozz a lot and he’s like “ew” but tolerates it cause well she’s a baby and she’s scared of boss which upsets him but whatever

she’s a mama’s girl too, but she has a soft spot in her dad’s heart. i could see charlie getting older and growing a stubble and being more dad like and not abandoning his party life or nonchalantless but adapting it with being a dad. he’s like a frat dad to me

peach isnt super maternal to me its not like she doesnt adore her daughter she does but she’s less of a traditional mom if that makes sense. she’s always been a realist so if baby clem is fussy for example she does get upset but she also knows babies are like that. charlie is like legitimately upset she’s upset and goes a little crazy and she’s like “hey its okay she probably just needs a diaper change”

she only gets severely worried when clem is severely sick or hurt which makes charlie feel bad too cause now his wife (not married but he kinda views her as wife lol) is upset too

she got the flu once and coughed and sneezed and she stayed up all night making sure she was okay while charlie kept a close eye too even if he’s yawning cause he values his sleep and rlly wants to but yknow his kid

she also does kinda get bouts of post partum esp newborn clem who is extremely fussy and whiny as like a baby puppy, also teething sucks and made breastfeeding awful (lots of ice to boobs that charlie helped press on)

she likes “uncle pim” snd when she gets taller than him it makes her so happy because she can hug him real tight but she also misses when pim could hold her and spin her around and she felt smaller

whenever her mom or dad kiss her forehead she closes her eyes and her tail wags really hard

The Little Smiling Mermaid (Chapter 9)

Graham Nelly was out scavenging for breakfast as part of his daily morning routine in his own unique Graham Nelly way: he used his "grappling hook" to harvest the sweet and aromatic tropical fruit the island bore, although it would take about seven times to succeed in getting at least two or three of each type he was craving at the moment. He accidentally grabbed a nest full of eggs and one angry mother parrot, who proceeded to give the hapless mer-hippy the ol' stare-down of doom. Graham gulped, bearing what one would call a shit-eating grin and sheepishly wave hello to shake off any negative vibe. This friendly greeting was only met with the mother furiously squawking in his face and ferociously chomping his hand. So much for a balanced breakfast! Once the panicking Graham Nelly finally got away from that one pissed-off mama, he spotted a very familiar group he knew all-too-well. Graham called out: "Well, look at what the catfish dragged in!". It didn't take too long for Graham to notice something was up with his littlest cousin. "Say, There's something different about you, Pim! New hairdo? I can see you've been using your dinglehopper!'" Pim shook his head for "No", Graham placed his hand on his stubble trying to figure it out. "New seashells?" Same response from Pim, who was humored by his cousin's morning absentminded-ness. Graham shrugged: "Well, I'm stumped." Alan snapped: "HE'S GOT LEGS, YOU IDIOT!" Graham was taken aback by the rarity of the lobster losing his cool. "He traded his voice to some crazy sea witch for a pair legs! UGH!" as Pim was trying out his new legs by getting up to stand for the very first time, his friends further conversed; Glep summed-up the catch of the deal: "Eskabezawabowakishymwah!" Alan admitted in anguish: "And he's only got three days. That big yellow guy barely even knows Pim! This is a catastrophe! Okay, maybe there's still time for me to get your voice back-" Alan's rant was cut off by Pim tripping on a pebble and falling back down with a dramatic splash, cascading water all over the lobster who took it as a sign to chill out. Alan then crawled into Pim's hand, looking up eye-to-eye with a plea to reason: "Look, if I can call off the deal, you don't have to return to the palace BUT it can just be us exploring what else the sea has to offer! You'll be...." Alan quickly noticed that Pim's eyes started to shimmer with leaking tears. "...just be miserable for the rest of your life." Defeated, Alan agreed: "All right, all right! I'll try to help you out best I can." Pim immediately smiled, kissing Alan on top of the head before letting him go free. "Ugh, what a soft-shell I turned out to be." Graham spoke up, giving some helpful advice to Pim: "Dude, I'm tellin' ya, if you wanna be a land critter, the first thing you gotta do is dress like one!"

Charlie, his crew, Mipnessa and Mr. Boss all embarked on the newly-prepared ship at noon for some sight-seeing, as Dj Spitz served the party a light brunch of egg sandwiches and chopped fruit per Mipnessa’s request. Of course Charlie was still having an internal conflict with himself over recent events, but eventually decided to turn his brain off to properly enjoy his meal. Mipnessa asked: “I beg pardon but isn’t this fruit supposed to be chopped?” Charlie grinned and assured: “Wait for it…” Dj Spitz grabbed two swords behind himself, tossed a pineapple in the air to where his blade caught up just in time for him to quickly dice it into chunks, landing perfectly on the plate to which the impressed group gave Dj Spitz a well-deserved round of applause. Tomar complimented: “Hot damn, Spitz, you sure know how to make a spectacle out of a meal!” Dj Spitz replied, “All in a day’s work, man!” As he wiped the juice off the blades before returning them to their scabbards. “I do say, Charles, your friends are all charmingly eccentric, no wonder you’re so lively.” said Mipnessa, to which Charlie replied: “What can I say? They’re the wind beneath my sails!" Smormu, realizing the egg in her sandwich was in dire need of some seasoning, asked: "Say Chris, may you please pass the salt?” to which Chris obliged: “Sure thing.” but while reaching for the salt, he accidentally knocked over Lyle’s coffee and spilled it on Mipnessa’s gown! Boy did he ever thank the heavens that it had already been cooled off by the cream. “Shit!” Chris spat out as Smormu and Charlie quickly grabbed some napkins to help Mipnessa clean up as a groggy, crusty-eyed Lyle muttered: “Damn it.” while picking his mug up for a refill. The embarrassed Chris apologized over and over until Mipnessa replied: “That’s okay, I find bumbling, awkward men to be more unique and endearing...that’s why I find Charlie to be my ideal husband!” Tomar chuckled: “Oh that Mip, she's a real kidder!” while nudging Charlie’s shoulder as the latter's face flushed red in embarrassment; Eager to change the subject, Charlie broke silence: “How about my ol’ pal Tomar plays us a tune?", rummaging around one of his pockets to dig out his ocarina and placing it in Tomar’s hand to hastily request in a whisper: “Play us a good ol’ fashioned sea shanty, for atmosphere.” Tomar sighed, knowing he kinda had that coming. “I’m no Nicholson but I know The Golden Vanity by heart.” Charlie held his hand out to Mipnessa, "May I have this dance?”

“You look sensational!” Graham Nelly complimented Pim on the makeshift dress they collaborated on, Pim finding an old discarded sail and Graham providing the needle and thread. Alan put his claw on his chin, suggesting: “It’s missing something…” just then Glep swam up and gave Pim a familiar trinket he salvaged from the grotto’s ruins: Pim’s flower barrette he stashed inside his favorite music box. Pim kissed Glep to say thanks before placing the barrette in his hair, using his reflection in the water as a mirror to make sure the look was perfect. “I bet that Prince dude's gonna feel his jaw drop the ground when he sees you all dolled up and stuff, let's swim over to- Oh, right, you have legs now so it'd be a bitch for you to swim...luckily I have just the thing for that! See that big ol' platform with the fiddle-sticks over there? All that came with the island, now the platform itself is a little bit wear-and-tear but it'll still keep you afloat!" Pim walked up to the raft and with some help, he started pushing it out to sea. Before Pim could embark, he had to give Graham a big ol' hug to show his appreciation. Graham returned the favor by ruffling Pim's head, responding: "Love you too, kiddo."

All while the usual high-seas hi-jinks played out in the background, Mr. Boss was looking out for any sign of trouble with a spy glass, although he wasn’t behind the wheel at the very moment since the ship was anchored, he was still startled from the previous outing at sea. Just then he spotted what appeared to be a stowaway perched on top of a rock surrounded in debris from what he deemed a shipwreck of sorts. Mr. Boss took pity as he pondered just how long they sat on that rock, so the old man quickly rushed over to the dinghy with some lifesavers handy, catching Charlie's attention, asking “Woah, Boss, where’s the fire?” as he followed Mr. Boss, who replied: “We have a stowaway in need of our help!” Charlie’s curiosity peaked, asking: “...Is it a girl?” Mr. Boss spat: “There’s no time for sophomoric questions, boy!” as he lowered the dinghy to carry out the mission. …

Pim felt like an idiot who didn't know how to paddle to save his life...then again, he never really had enough experience to steer a raft, especially considering merfolk obviously didn't need anything like rafts or boats anyways. Nevertheless, his heart fluttered as Charlie gently helped him up, calmly asking: “You okay?”. Mr. Boss fussed in sympathy: “What a trooper.” Charlie carried Pim bridal-style over to the dinghy where he laid the beautiful stranger to sit beside him as Mr. Boss rowed back to the vessel to raise the dinghy upwards. …

Mipnessa was harmonizing her lute with Tomar getting the hang of Charlie’s ocarina to the rest of the gang's clapping rhythm. That was, until everyone sans Mipnessa's attention immediately turned to Mr. Boss, Charlie and the beautiful stranger they rescued. Chris, Tomar, Lyle and Smormu all stood stupefied in awe at the newcomer as Mipnessa ran to Charlie to hug him and fuss over how she wondered where he was while he was gone...for about at least 10 minutes. A sly Chris remarked: “Hello nurse.” only for Mr. Boss to chide: "Ladies prefer a man who minds his manners, Chris." Smormu piped up: "Aw sweet, more girls to relate to and bond with! Everything's coming up Smormu!" Pim started to frown, the double-disappointment of repressing his own jealousy towards Mipnessa honing in on his man and being unable to clarify his true gender, but in a case of Morton's Fork, he'd still be hesitant to come out right away even if he did have his voice intact. His frown did turn into a smile once Smormu walked up to Pim to shake his hand. "The name's Smormu, what's yours?" while patiently waiting for a response, she took notice of Pim's barrette and let out a girlish squeal: "Oh my gosh, what a cute hair clip! Say, is that a golden pearl in the center?" Pim's face flushed, responding to the compliment with a curtsy. Mr. Boss chuckled at the demure stowaway. "While all be! She must have come from a wealthy family, perhaps even royalty." Mipnessa piped up: "Oh, how beautiful indeed! In fact, it reminds me of one of my own favorite pieces of finery!" Mipnessa quickly removed her shawl to reveal a gold-chain necklace whose focal point was a large creamy-white pearl embellished with diamonds, impressing everyone around her; even Pim excitedly shook his hands while thinking of a way to express a non-verbal compliment. Charlie knew this had to be the mystery critter, right? For a girl with the most beautiful voice, she was literally speechless. Perhaps she had laryngitis, or maybe she reserved her voice for certain times? Either way, Charlie was feeling even more conflicted with himself now that he really did have two potential brides to pick between: The proper lady he was arranged with, or the wild and elusive beauty he kept bumping into?

For the record, Kaz is blaming Jesper for this one.

To be fair, Kaz blames Jesper for a lot of things. Like teaching Inej's male cousins the words to that stupid Kaelish love song, "Black is the Color," or some such thing, or insisting on trying to introduce color to Kaz's wardrobe, or the mangy orange and white cat that's taken up residence in the Slat. Granted, the last thing is not really Jesper's fault, but given time, and the proper motivation, Kaz is confident he can pin the blame on Jesper somehow.

Not this time, though. No, this time, this whole stupid situation is entirely Jesper's fault.

Jesper's fault, and the homemade moonshine that Colm Fahey brews with peaches and strawberries and wild ginger. He sent Jesper a jar of the stuff for the winter Kerst celebration, and now it seems like the entire Slat is near falling down drunk.

"It was one jar," Kaz says now, his tongue oddly thick. He hadn't been able to escape getting a glass shoved into his hand, so he'd looked at the seemingly innocuous pinkish-gold liquid and knocked it back without even thinking. He's had paint thinner that's milder than whatever brew this is. "How does one jar do all this?"

Inej is listing besides him, her long braid nearly coming undone. She says wisely, "Jesper says his da brews it with the fermented honey water. To give it, it, you know. Extra strength."

"All the Saints and their ugly mothers," Kaz mumbles and Inej swats at him, and misses by a mile. Which is a sign of just how potent this stuff is.

Inej had accepted a glass of moonshine from Jesper, tempered with water, and she'd danced with nearly everyone in the Slat--all the young kids, Anika, Pim, Roeder, Jesper, even Wylan, who let Inej drag him away from the upright piano someone shoved into the corner. No one's played it until tonight, until Wylan has started playing. Then someone got out a tin pennywhistle and another person dragged in a fiddler player from one of musician troupes that walk the Barrel busking inside, and the moonshine had flowed like water.

Music, wild and raucous and only slightly out of tune, poured out of the Slat, and the Dregs had danced like madmen, like heathens, howling at the winter moon. Kaz sat by the wall and watched; no one would ask Dirtyhands to dance, even if they didn't account for his leg. But he didn't mind watching Inej dance, her hair whipping around her, as she used her hands and feet to tell a story of a Saint defeating a monster on a mountain. Her hair is curtain of black silk in the light, and he wants to bury his face in it.

He blinks at the unguarded thought, shifting as Inej lists further and further, leaning into him more fully. "Sorry, sorry," she says, her s's oddly, delightfully sharp. Like a piece of ginger candy. "The room's dancing."

"The room's not dancing, you are," he says nonsensically and then gives up on shifting altogether. Inej is pressed up against him now, their layers of clothing between them prevent any skin on skin touch, but his heart pounds at her proximity anyways. He suspects that no matter how long he's gotten used to touching her, it always will.

"Did you like it?" Inej asks, a little dizzily. "Seeing me dance," she clarifies when he doesn't answer right away. "I didn't have the bell anklets, or the finger cymbals, but I think I got all the steps right. From what I could remember. Mama would do it better, though. Or Cousin Kathani."

Kaz couldn't tell her what they could do any better than Inej, and says so. Inej beams up at him, that smile he'd crawl over hot coals for, and for one glorious moment, leans her head on his shoulder. "One day I'll take you," she says, as the room continues to waltz and weave around them. "And you'll see me dancing. Properly, with jasmine and everything."

Later, he can blame this on the moonshine. Or the dancing room. Or the wild laughter and music still going around them, sealing them away from the outside world, and whatever consequences face them out there. But he finds himself pressing his lips to the crown of her head, lingering on the silky smooth strands, the scent of moonshine and the gardenia oil she uses on her hair. It lasts no more than second, but Inej's hands curl in the fabric of his waistcoat. Her breath catches in her throat, not in pain or fear, just dazed wonder.

He holds the moment as long as he dares, like a magician dragging out the climax of a trick before he releases the tension and settles back against the wall. Inej is still in his arms, and the room dances on all around them. Just this once, he can give Jesper and the moonshine credit.

Memphis, Tennessee, March 1957

The gentle Spring wind rustled the leaves as soft melodies floated from the radio. Elvis, with his iconic style, leaned back comfortably, resting his left arm on the open window, allowing the cool breeze to tousle his hair. Cecelia nestled beside him, her warmth radiating against his side, creating a comforting cocoon amid the spacious yet stifling confines of her family's grand mansion. Feeling the walls closing in, they decided to take to the open road, craving the freedom and adventure that cruising through the vibrant streets of Memphis promised. As the city skyline came into view, the excitement bubbled between them, ready to explore the lively rhythm of their surroundings.

"Once again, darlin', thanks for lettin' my family stay with your kin." He smiled, his eyes still on the open road,

"No, don't thank me. You're always welcome in my home. Besides, you're welcome in my heart." She kissed his cheek as he turned redder than a rose on Valentine’s.

"I see all that poster kissin paid off..." He joked as she slapped his arm playfully,

"It's to-"

"I know, I know, test your lipstick." He shook his head, "Sometimes, you're as crazy as the fans' sugar."

"Can it pim-pim..."

"That was cold, darlin'," Elvis said, growing a bit quiet, as the two continued cruising,

As they kept driving with no particular place to go, the car stopped in front of a piece of land on Highway 51 South.

Before them stood a magnificent mansion, its stately silhouette framed by an elegant brick fence that glowed warmly in the afternoon sunlight. The driveway appeared to stretch endlessly, bordered by meticulously manicured gardens and towering trees, creating a sense of grandeur that made Cecelia’s heart race.

As they pulled up in front of the grand entrance, Elvis stepped out and made his way to Cecelia's side of the car. He reached for the door with a gentle smile, his eyes gleaming with pride.

"Elvis, it’s absolutely breathtaking…" Cecelia breathed, her gaze sweeping across the sprawling estate and the lush landscape that surrounded it. She felt an overwhelming sense of awe, as if she had been transported to a different world.

Meanwhile, Elvis stood beside her, fiddling nervously with the key in his hand, anticipation etched across his face as he prepared to unveil the treasures that awaited them inside.

"Right this way." He smiled,

"Elvis how'd you..."

"Magic baby."He grinned kissing her cheek, as they walked into the mansion, Cecelia could sense a feel of home, like she belonged right here with Elvis,

"Elvis this mansion is perfect for you."

"For us..." He grabbed her hands,

"My mama would never go for that," she said, shaking her head as a frown creased her brow. "Why, she'd think I was shackin' up with you, and—" Before she could finish her sentence, Elvis leaned in and pressed his lips against hers, silencing her objections. In that moment, her thoughts scattered like leaves in the wind, leaving her breathless and momentarily forgetting her worries.

He pulled back slightly, a playful glint in his eye. "Already asked her," he murmured, a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth, as if he knew exactly how to navigate the delicate dance of their budding romance.

June 1957

"Mama..." Elvis sighed, he was exhausted coming back from shooting Jailhouse rock, and unpacking half the house he just wanted to relax, that was until he heard the sound of his favorite girl comining in. "Mama G they're wild out there! I move a box and-" Her eyes fell on Elvis as Cecelia as he picked her up and twirled her. "Whats with the outfit you can't move in, in heels?" Elvis asked,

"I just flew in from California because I had to film I Love Lucy and then move in." Explaining her dramatic outfit as she laughed,

"You two get changed so we can move this stuff in!" Gladys said as the two nodded,

"That's the happiest I've seen that boy ya know..." Minnie Mae said,

"Me too." Gladys said as she was sipping on tea, "Vernon go help them!" She shooed him off,

"Mama G do you need any help moving anything into your room?" Cecelia asked as Gladys thought to herself, "I don't think so lovebug, " Gladys giggled,

As the day turned into the late afternoon Elvis was sitting outside in the back yard drinking a soda with his friends and cousins who had all just finished playing a few rounds of football,

"So I was thinkin..."

"Thinkin what EP..." Billy asked, a twinkle in his cousin, Elvis's eye.

"You bet not be thinkin about throwin roman candles at each other..." Her accent heavy as she scolded them,

"But hon-"

"Not at my new house, could break a winda or something or worse the hospital and you can't afford to be stuck in a hospital!"

"But doll..."

"No Roman Candles do you hear me Elvis Aron Presley..."

"You tell him lovebug!" Gladys said from the kitchen,

"Mama!" Elvis blushed!

"Booby she's right and you know it." She laughed giving Cecelia a high-five,

"So hows Lucille Ball like?" Gladys asked as Minnie Mae sat in the kitchen with Cecelia and and Gladys, "Shes a gem honestly, gave me great advice, " She said seasoning the greens as Gladys put the corn bread in the oven,

"Oh?"

"What was it?" Minnie asked,

"She said, honey when you get married, always remember he may wear the pants but you're the one who picked them out." The women laughed,

"Speaking of marriage..." Gladys grinned bumping elbows with Cecelia,

"Yes mama G?"

" I was thinking you and E-"

CRASH!

"Aw hell gotta get a new winda..."

"Excuse me Mama G..."

"Of course."

"YOU BETTER NOT HAVE JUST SET OFF A ROMAN CANDLE!" Cecelia shouted from the back door, Elvis stood there like a sorry puppy, Billy gave her a roman candle an evil smirk on her face,

"Doll... now wait!" She chased him, "No! No!NO! OUCH!"

" They'll be engaged by Christmas." Gladys hummed.

Chapter 144 - Kaz

At least the Crow Club was back in working order. Beyond that things weren’t looking at their best. Kaz knew from Anika and Pim’s reports that the damage was mostly repaired and they’d reopened the closed wing a few months ago, but he also knew from the income reports Yara had been sending him  that they’d taken a hit. Her projections looked sunnier for next month, but Kaz wasn’t feeling particularly confident. There was a nervous energy about the Slat when he walked in, still as rowdy as it usually was in these early hours of the morning but with a slightly frantic edge. Kaz had known his extended absence would take a toll, but he’d tried to keep in control of what he could. 

“I assume there are rumours going round about -”

“Your mysterious disappearance? Yeah,” said Anika, “We’re treading water trynna cover up for you being missing,”

“Anyone get wise?”

“To the fact you weren’t here or to what you were actually up to?”

Kaz shot her an unamused glare. Clearly he needed to stop telling Anika up to 50% of the truth, because she was getting too good at picking up what the rest of it was. 

“I don’t think so,” she said, “Not with any proof you weren’t around. Few people here and there are convinced you’re dead,”

That didn’t particularly surprise him.

“Any attempts at territory grabs since you last wrote?”

“Liddies are still riled up, but nothing new except a pretty hollow looking threat from Black Tips,”

Kaz sighed. They weren’t staying in Ketterdam for long, he’d have to get through work quickly and make a few choice appearances if he could spare the time.

As far as Kaz and Inej knew, the plan was for them to drop in on Jesper and Wylan for the afternoon, then go to the house overnight whilst Nina stayed on the Geldstradt. They didn’t have the space to have her at the house by the harbour - especially when Alyssa was staying with them too - and anyway she would only be kept up all night by Sadja. But apparently Jesper and Wylan had other plans, as soon as they were through the door it was all but a demand they at least stay there the first night. They’d even set up a room for Alyssa upstairs, so she was close if Inej or Sadja needed her.

“How are you feeling?” Kaz had asked, watching Inej’s hand find the railing on the porch of the Hendriks house.

“I’m fine,”

Kaz shook his head, looking down at Sadja.

“Once you can talk I’m going to teach you to shout at your Mama every time she says that,” he told her, gently readjusting the sling in hopes of helping her settle.

Nina laughed.

Sadja had done well on the boat, Kaz thought, for a stubborn two month old who had never travelled further than the Grand Palace until a couple of weeks ago, but she hadn’t slept well last night and still didn’t seem to be interested in sleeping now.

“Kaz, really,” said Inej, shaking her head, “I’m okay. I’m just tired,”

Kaz nodded, but he and Nina had shared a brief glance. Inej rang the doorbell and Sadja immediately jutted out her bottom lip in indignation; for a moment Kaz thought she was going to cry but she settled again, still looking a little grumpy. He readjusted his cane so that he could remain balanced whilst he offered her his finger, and once she’d acknowledged it he gently rubbed his hand up and down her tiny tummy.

“Do you not like doorbells, Sadja?”

“I think it’s quite normal for babies not to like loud noises, Kaz,” said Nina, peering over the sling, “You’re okay, aren’t you Sadja? You’re a brave little muffin,”

“Brave little muffin?” asked Kaz.

“Hey, that is just about the highest compliment I’ve ever given anyone,”

“Well, you are brave aren’t you Sadja? You’re just like your Mama,”

She wriggled a little in the sling, as though she was trying to look up at him properly, and smiled. Kaz glowed. 

The door had barely been opened when they were met by the practically shouted words:

“Where’s my niece?”

“Well, hello to you too, Jesper,” said Inej, sharing his soft laugh.

She leaned into the arm he offered and he kissed her on the cheek, ushering her over the doorstep. Kaz followed, nodding at Jesper.

“Saints, I’ve missed you,” said Jesper, hugging Inej again.

“Oh, I’ve missed you too,”

Nina cleared her throat, glaring teasingly at Jesper. He threw an arm around her shoulders.

“I’ve missed you too, darling, obviously. And I guess I missed you Kaz,”

“Always with the compliments,”

Where’s Wylan?” asked Inej.

“Couldn’t get out of a meeting,” Jesper replied, shaking his head, “He won’t be long. Now, where’s this little Sadja you’ve been withholding from me?”

“Withholding-? She’s only been alive two months - and you were in Novyi Zem for one and a half of them,”

“Withholding,” Jesper repeated

Inej laughed. Kaz gently scooped Sadja out of her sling and into his arms, rocking her for a moment before he passed her to Inej so Jesper could lean over and greet her. He looked like he was about to burst with glee.

“Oh my goodness, you two she’s so beautiful. Aren’t you? Yes you are, yes you are,”

Jesper looked up at Kaz and Inej, grinning.

“She’s wonderful,”

“She most certainly is,” Kaz smiled, pushing the door to behind him before they walked together towards the living room, “It’s good to see you, Jes,”

“You too. And honestly you with a baby is quite possibly both the funniest and cutest thing I have ever seen, so thank you for that,”

Nina snorted. Kaz glared at them both. 

“And how are you?” Jesper had asked Inej, as they sat on the sofa together.

It was about twenty minutes later and Wylan had just got back, all apologies for being late and overjoyed to see them all again. He was now sitting in between Inej and Kiada with Sadja in his arms, smiling.

“Well, I haven’t slept in about two months,” Inej smiled, leaning her head onto Jesper’s shoulder, “But other than that I’m doing pretty well. How are you? - How was Novyi Zem?”

“I’m good, we’re all pretty good at the minute, actually. And Novyi Zem was lovely, good to see my Da, and everyone did a very good job,” he squeezed Aimee’s hand lightly, from where she was perching on the arm of the sofa next to him, “There were a few moments where we thought we’d have to come home early - that was always in the plan as an option, if anyone needed it - but we ended up staying the whole time,”

“How’s Colm?” asked Nina, leaning forwards to pick her coffee up from the table.

The conversation floated on, and Kaz had drifted in and out of paying attention to it as he kept his eyes on Sadja. She started wriggling uncomfortably and Wylan passed her back to Inej, then a moment passed before she started crying. 

“Is she alright?” asked Kaz.

“She’s just hungry,” said Inej, looking at Kaz in a way that meant calm down, she’s a baby, she’s going to cry, you do not need to worry as she stood up and gently rocked Sadja against her chest, whispering to her in Suli, “I’ll take her upstairs,”

At some point, Kaz wasn’t exactly sure how long it had been, it was only him, Nina, and Jesper still sitting in the living room. Focus had switched freely: the trip to Novyi Zem - two weeks with Colm followed by a month and a half through in Weddle and Shriftport, then another two weeks with Colm - Kiada had struggled with the boat, Aimee had struggled on the farm, Kiada has struggled in Weddle; news on the Ravkans and their new little prince and princess, twins about three months older than Sadja; Clemmie Boscht had started renting an apartment in the city and came to the house to share roast dinner with the family once a month; updates on something Kaz had forgotten to pay attention to as he was wondering how long Inej and Sadja had been gone and if he should go upstairs to find them. Now Nina was asking about wedding plans - the original date should have been last month, but it hadn’t been set in stone when Kaz and Inej first went to Ravka so Jesper and Wylan had decided to postpone and visit Jesper’s father instead of him coming out to them. 

“Doesn’t matter,” Jesper was saying, “Nothing will ever make up for the fact that Kaz Brekker got married before I did,”

Nina flopped against the back cushions of the sofa.

“Yeah, it’s a real blow to the ego isn’t it?”

“Aren’t you two just the height of comedy?” said Kaz drily.

“To be fair, Jes,” Nina added, “I think we were all surprised you weren’t the first to get married. I mean how long had you two known each other before you moved in, two months?”

“No, well I really only joke,” said Jesper, glancing briefly at the door and lowering his voice, “Wylan told me ages ago he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to get married, after everything with his parents he just kinda… lost faith in it,”

Jesper had told Kaz about it at the time. It was years ago, around the time of the Van Eck trial, and Wylan was having an unsurprisingly bad time of it. He said he’d burst into tears and told Jesper that it had been evil of him to trap him in a relationship that would never go anywhere, and that he could leave if he wanted to and Wylan would understand. Apparently Jesper had stared at him for almost a full minute, and then said:

“Wy, you’re seventeen,”

“Well, clearly,” Kaz had said, “You handled that well,”

“I helped him afterwards!” Jepser had cried defensively, “That was just my first thought,”

Now Kaz sat behind his desk at the Slat, flicking through the endless pile of papers laying in wait and watching the hands move on his timepiece. Almost five bells. He wanted to be back by six.

Sadja had woken up not long before three bells, screaming loud enough to bring the entire house down. Kaz fumbled in the dark, searching for his cane, before Inej turned on the gas lights and handed it to him, smiling and shaking her head. They sat next to each other on the side of the mattress as Sadja nursed, and for about half an hour afterwards Kaz was still rocking her slowly whilst Inej lowered the lights and lay back down. Sadja seemed on the verge of settling back to sleep and Kaz stood to return her to the cradle next to the bed, only for her to immediately start wailing again.

“Well I hope you’re not still hungry,” he said softly in Suli, giving her a gente bounce “I think Mama’s asleep,”

She flailed one of her tiny fists into the air and it whacked lightly against Kaz’s chest.

“Not bad form,” he told her, “But you need more strength behind it if you want to do real damage. We’ll work on that when you’re older. What can we do to help you sleep now though, hm?”

Sadja wriggled in his arm and Kaz moved to sit on one of the armchairs so he could set down his cane and support her more comfortably. 

“I don’t have anything new to read to you,” he said, “But I could tell you a story if you’d like,”

There was a pause broken only by Sadja’s impatient cries, before Inej’s soft voice came from the darkness on the other side of the room:

“You know the whole idea of us using one language each with her whilst she's still learning kind of depends on you speaking to her in Kerch, right?”

Kaz looked up.

“Inej? I thought you were asleep,”

“Kaz, if you think anyone could fall asleep through this then I have serious concerns about your hearing. And, again, you’re supposed to speak in Kerch,”

“I’m still not convinced that’s going to work,” he replied, “Isn’t she just going to hear us using both with each other anyway?”

Inej groaned.

“It’s three in the morning, Kaz, can we talk about this later?”

He laughed softly, nodding though he wasn’t sure if she’d see in the dark. He’d known that he needed to go to the Slat - the last word from Anika and Pim had been concerningly vague -  but he could stay here a little while yet, couldn’t he? What harm would it do, just to stay here for a little longer? He sighed.

“You need to go, don’t you?”

He didn’t know how she did that.

“It can wait until tomorrow,”

“You can’t,” said Inej, quietly, “Go on. I’ll get her settled, just don’t be long, okay?”

“Never,”

He really needed to stop watching the clock, or he wouldn’t get anything done and have to bully himself into staying longer. It was a good while past five bells when he left, ignoring the shouts for attention that followed him from the crowd. The Hendriks house was mostly still sleeping, though Wylan was unsurprisingly up and in the kitchen making coffee by the time Kaz arrived at six bells. Inej was awake but she was still upstairs, not long dressed and part way through brushing her hair when Kaz knocked softly on the door. She opened it slowly, pressing a finger to her lips as he slipped inside.

“Sadja’s asleep,”

Kaz stood over the cradle for a moment, watching her. She really was perfect. Inej appeared next to him, her arm slipping around his waist once he’d nodded confirmation. She leaned her head against his shoulder.

“She already looks like you,” she whispered.

Kaz shook his head.

“She’s beautiful. That’s all you,”

Inej shook her head then, her hand finding his and slipping beneath the rim so her fingers brushed his wrist. Kaz’s heart leapt, thinking of holding her on the floor almost a year ago, a knife in her gut and her blood soaking over both of them. He swallowed and she felt him tense, starting to pull away to give him space. His fingers tightened over hers, holding her to him. 

“We’ve not…” she hesitated, “We’ve not talked about a plan for where to live. For what to do next,”

Kaz had been avoiding the conversation, because he didn’t actually know what he was going to say. But it was a year ago when he couldn’t tell her everything he’d thought he should be able to say by now - 

Their happiness, together. In Kerch, in Ravka, they could move to the permafrost in Fjerda for all he cared. He would carve a life for her in the face of a mountain, if that was what she wanted.

- and so much had changed since then. He should be able to tell her that now. And he did.

Inej turned and leaned her face up towards his, glowing in the soft dancing light of dawn leaking through the window, her dark eyes shimmering. She lifted a hand up to cup his cheek, and slowly they leaned into each other. Their foreheads pressed against each other, Kaz’s hand slipped down Inej’s back, and their lips met in the warmth of spring and joy and a family that for so long Kaz had convinced himself he didn’t want, because he never thought he’d be able to find it. 

The entire world was golden.

how did beef lose his legs?

One day in December, the Pimling-Simpson clan was in festive spirits, getting ready for the coming holidays and getting their house decorated to match the mood. While the adults were all doing the work, the kids were racing each other through the house as they usually do. But a few tangled lights caused a horrible accident

Little Pimmy somehow got his legs all tied up while Mama and Daddy weren’t looking and went tumbling down the stairs. In a gruesome and violent display, his legs were ripped from his body in a way that shouldn’t be possible for a mere string of lights. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and the rest is history.

The holidays are a curse for the Pimling family. Many years ago, Grandaddy Pim spent Christmas at his best friend’s funeral, and just a couple years later he watched one of America’s most beloved scientists die in an electrical blaze too, not to mention nearly watching another friend melt away before his eyes. As Ell and Giorno sat in the waiting room that night, they desperately hoped their son wouldn’t be another casualty of whatever god had a vendetta against holiday cheer. They’d take the Christmas when Nee and Dur got arrested over this any day.

Most of the family looks back on this day and cries, or cringes, or any other adverse reaction. But Beef just laughs, reminiscing fondly about the day he became a man. The day he laughed in his creator’s face and said he couldn’t be killed in a way that matters. Without that horrific accident he wouldn’t be the Goldpilled Medalmaxxing Paralympian he is now. Thanks Mom and Dad for leaving that string of lights unattended! You’re the best!

Beef tells the story at every family gathering and regales the younger siblings and cousins with his badassery, with the same enthusiasm with which he recounts his gold medal wins. Nobody can really stop him because well, he’s the one who lost his legs. He had it worst, so he can feel however he wants about it. If he’s not traumatized then that’s good.

Even though Beef likes recounting the story, he hates when strangers in public ask him about his legs with pity and sadness in their eyes. They won’t get it like his family does. So for them he spins different stories to make them regret asking, as if the real story isn’t gruesome enough. It’s kind of funny to tell some bratty kid he lost his legs from not eating his veggies, or tell the old lady praying over him that he personally sold his legs to the devil.

17. Worst romantic experience: Here’s the thing: a mediocre date is worse than a bad date because at least a bad date you get a funny story. And Halli has really only suffered through mediocre dates. I don’t think she’s ever had a romantic partner or slept with anyone, tho she has made out with people passionately at the bar while relative frequency. But the fact is, she’s only going to sleep with someone who she is really into and feels she has a strong emotional connection with (perhaps some echoing issues/fear due to her conception? who’s to say idk) and she has not found anyone who she has had that with
