Map Sequence

You know those animated travel maps in movies that let you follow the characters’ route? Well, my friend and I seem to be stuck in one of those.

Together we opened the biggest book in the library, got sucked in, and now it’s telling us about the cultures of so many different places, so very far apart. But we’re never really landing on the map, seeing everything from the sky without getting immersed.

The lights shine up at us in different colours, the rivers draw patterns we’ve never considered. In a way, this ongoing map sequence is comfortable. We can’t see the dotted lines behind us or ahead. We roll with it, and we’ve both reached a point at which we’re no longer certain whether we consider the eventual destination an escape or some lurking trap. If the book ever lets us go, we will know a little more about a lot of things, but will we really have learned?

The map keeps moving, and we continue to catch up.

Here's what I've been up to lately! Three years after I created the original version, here's a revamp of the first planet I mapped out for @jayrockin's "Runaway to the Stars" project, the homeworld of their Centaur aliens. This post covers Phase One: Geology.

Firstly, the Equirectangular elevation maps with and without the color gradient layer, and tectonic plate map. This color gradient marks sea level, of course, and while there are inland areas that are *also* below that elevation, I have yet to determine which of those basins have lakes and seas therein, and how their shorelines compare; *that* will be seen once I figure out the climate : ) As for the Plate map, most of the smaller, oblong plates without any rift boundaries represent island chains or continent fragments that accreted onto larger landmasses; discretely marking those was helpful for placing and shaping the mountain ranges.

Next, the Poles-Centered Perspective maps, made possible with Photopea's Polar Coordinates tool. The planet's Southern hemisphere, centered on the south pole, is seen at left, and its Northern hemisphere is seen at right. Like the previous set of three, this set includes the color elevation map, greyscale elevation map, and solid color tectonic plates.

Last of all, the basis for the planet's current appearance: it's tectonic history! These gifs, in six frames, cover about 200 million years of continental drift, starting with the breakup of two Supercontinents, and was primarily achieved in Blender. This isn't my first time trying to reconstruct a tectonic history, but it *is* my first time doing so this quickly and efficiently, thanks to the process I developed here using this planet's continents as a test case.

Thank you @lovelylunasnow for the suggestion of Ingo using a yumi. I ended up doing down a bit of a rabbit hole but at least I got to read more about Kyūdo ^^

These are just rough ideas for now while I think on things. I saw some archers shoot with half their kimono hanging loose, so I wanted to test an alt design using that. Also hearing about how plucking the bowstring of hama yumi will scare off evil spirits gave me some ideas for how Ingo dispels angered alphas while he learns to actually fire.

I'll see if there's anything else I want to try but between the naginata and the yumi, I think his weapons are solid for his different forms.

We'll see how things go ^^ this might end up being his polished design if I don't find anything to change.

Summary:

CHAPTER THE THIRD: In which Mulder slow walks solving a case and the guys try desperately to avoid the outside world, but the world does not entirely cooperate (excerpt under the cut)

Along with a bonus interlude chapter, in which Mulder decides he'd like to try being the one who gets fucked for once, and is annoyingly Mulder-ish about it, but in the end everybody has a good time.

“Hi." Mulder looks around, a little stunned. "Where the hell are we?” “No place.” Alex shrugs, like this isn’t the type of house your average celebrity would consider a status symbol. “I'm tired of hotels. Friend of a girlfriend of a guy I worked with once is a travel agent, told her I wanted something nice. It’s off season, easy.” “Yeah, easy if you live in a world where money’s pretend." Mulder's tone is cutting. He can justify taking funding for research, but a mountain retreat provided by the conspiracy feels a little too close to being bought off. “Come on Alex, did you think this was going to impress me?” For the space of a heartbeat Alex looks crestfallen, then his expression flattens. “Really? Is this what you’re picking to be an asshole about tonight?” Mulder immediately regrets starting out that way. He has gone into every interaction for years wanting to hurt Alex by default, and it turns out to be a hard habit to break. “I didn’t mean—” “Yeah you did,” Alex interrupts, bitter. Spots of color appear high on his cheeks; Mulder must have hit a nerve. “You know, I didn’t ask to be a part of any of this. In case you haven’t noticed, my life is pretty fucked up. And it’s mostly because of the bastards I work for, on both sides." His eyes flash with defiance. "So no, I don't feel bad about living well off their money when I have the chance. Which is rarely. And no, I don't particularly care what you think about it.” That’s so patently untrue it hurts. Besides, Alex looks really good when he’s a little bit pissed off; Mulder decides there’s no reason to pick this as the place to stand on strictest principle. “I guess this is what you meant when you said I’d be annoying about things,” he offers, by way of apology. “You wouldn’t be you otherwise,” Alex responds, with a resigned half smile. “It’s fine if you don’t want to stay. I mean, I think you’re being stupid, but I get it.” That easy acquiescence pulls on Mulder’s heart. “No. Sorry.” He reaches out and cups Alex’s face, and Alex shifts almost imperceptibly into the touch, like a plant turning toward light. “Sorry,” he whispers again, guiding their lips together.

one of the best parts in playing through remedy’s games is directly seeing how each game built upon concepts touched upon in prior ones. you can trace almost every experimental decision throughout its run of games that it makes for an interesting playthrough whether or not you enjoy playing the game

Once I had enough high-resolution climate data to work with, the final part of the Climate phase was the creation of maps with discrete climate zones, which I produced in both the Trewartha classification scheme, left, and the Köppen classification scheme, right.

The final phase of the Ayrum mapmaking project was to create realistic satellite style maps, which began with mapping out soil colors and the ground cover of vegetation generally and tree-analogues specifically.

Once I knew where the plants belonged, I then determined what colors they'd be in the conditions they're adapted for, as seen in the maps, and under seasonal variation, with the chart showing how plants with certain adaptations react to seasonal changes in those conditions.

In these gifs we see the ground plants and tree canopies changing colors as the Solstices and Equinoxes expose them to greater or lesser rainfall and harsher or milder temperatures than what they're adapted for. Neither of these gifs provide a true image of what the surface looks like from space, but rather of the in-person appearance of whatever plants may be present.

Finally, using the vegetation density maps as raster masks for the seasonal plant color maps, and layering those with the snow-and-ice maps over the soil color map, we now have a much truer image of Ayrum's surface as of its (Northern) Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn months.

Me rn playing Assassin's Creed Brotherhood for the first time is like:

- 50% wandering around the map (trying to get to missions, treasures, feathers and flags).

- 30% battling.

- 12% admiring the architecture.

- 8% actually doing the fucking missions and restoring memory.
