The Autobiography of Red
Tumblr media
We haven't talked about this guy in a hot second. Though I have studied Greek and Roman mythology quite a bit, I wasn't really sure how to write for Marcus Acacius, until I realized that one of Pedro's favorite authors is Anne Carson, who specializes in Greek linguistics. I've just re-read "The Gender of Sound", and have also enjoyed "The Autobiography of Red", which I find to be a perfect pairing. Check 'em out!
Tumblr media
“Words bounce. Words, if you let them, will do what they want to do and what they have to do.” “Under the seams runs the pain.” “How does distance look?" is a simple direct question. It extends from a spaceless within to the edge of what can be loved.” “Not touching but joined in astonishment as two cuts lie parallel in the same flesh.” “Meanwhile music pounded / across hearts opening every valve to the desperate drama of being / a self in a song.” “And there it was one of those moments that is the opposite of blindness”. "The world poured back and forth between their eyes once or twice.”
― Anne Carson, Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse

Judge me here are my NHL head canons. I keep these to myself, for fun. These are not at all factually true (I think???)
1. Jack Hughes using they pronouns
2. Quinn Hughes absolutely ADORES Kiefer Sherwood, like a trophy on his shelf (signing him in free agency)
3. Marcus Pettersson is a chatty, fun guy that is great at giving advice to all the little swedes and little defenders. He has extremely comforting motherly vibes (this one MIGHT be true)
4. Erik Brannstrom and Nils Höglander are best buds, despite barely knowing each other. Its just the Swedish connection bro, duhh.
They also text each other like woozy exes that miss each other, but its all fun. (One of them was definitely drunk when it started)
5. Derek Forbort is gently loved by everyone in the locker room (I just hope this is true poor baby's been through so much).
6. Vincent Desharnais goes crazy at team parties
7. Jake DeBrusk also goes crazy at team parties
8. Elias Pettersson (40) and JT Miller had at least one heated moment off ice where they almost fist fought, and Quinn and Myers stopped them like the only mature adults around.
9. Quinn Hughes tiredly whispers the next move to the management every week.
10. Conor Garland IS Quinn Hughes's only emotional support and he's his favourite person.
11. Carson Soucy and Teddy Blueger are best buds.
12. Kevin Lankinen is casually everyone's therapist, but sometimes hes too mad about the team to help people.
13. Nils Höglander is the silliest young guy in the league, incorrectcanucks portrays him perfectly.
Okay, these are pretty funny though, imagine they were real ha ha ha... 😳👀🤞❔

Re: my observation that the average undergraduate now seems to have much greater familiarity with Homeric epic and at least some Greek literature (esp. tragedy) than with the Aeneid or any Roman material, I think there’s a myriad of things at work here but at least one is that we’ve reverted to this weird cultural construct where ancient Greek myth and literature is viewed as universal while Roman literature is viewed as particular and this affects what books are taught e.g. in high school and college English classes but also what gets mined for retellings. and I also think Roman material is often imagined as being more deeply implicated in the ideological framework of patriarchal western imperial society and like, in some cases perhaps that’s fair, but I would argue as a literary historian that Roman poetry is precisely where we see the cracks forming in Roman gendered imperialism just like Greek tragedy is where we see the cracks forming in Athenian gendered imperialism. whether we want to commit to any idea of authorial intent is a different question but imo it’s impossible to read e.g. Roman elegy or pastoral or even Lucan and come away with the pop-culture idea of the iconic masculine Roman subject (hell, I think even the Aeneid questions the conventional notion of masculine Roman virtus that Lucan absolutely shatters, but that’s another discussion)
anyways this also gets combined with a dynamic that’s really maddening to me as a classicist where anything Roman is almost exclusively gendered as masculine in popular culture (see the Roman Empire meme, but also the subculture of Jordan Peterson bros roleplaying as stoics and reading or pretending to read Marcus Aurelius) whereas on the Greek side we have Anne Carson’s Sappho translations and a total saturation of feminist rewritings of Greek myth, Homeric epic, and tragedy. this is actually really weird from the perspective of a Roman social historian, given that women are far more visible in Roman material (esp. from the 1st century CE onward) than they are anywhere in classical Greek society, and it has the consequence that Roman poetry (except, like, Lucretius I guess) gets sidelined because the types of dudes that are going to maybe read Marcus Aurelius or Tacitus are definitely not going to read Catullus or Vergil’s Eclogues or even the Aeneid given that poetry itself is often gendered as feminine in the 21st century popular imagination, and the types of non-classicists who like Anne Carson’s Sappho and feminist approaches to Greek myth are also probably not going to read Roman poetry

Canucksblr’s “most Canuckian experience” bracket — Round 2, Poll 2
Tumblr media
with a win in the second round, demko’s popliteus injury will be moving onto Round 3! the second poll of Round 2, with context below as always, is:
the context:
in a game that would cause the canucks to be eliminated if they didn’t at least get one point, they immediately went down 3-0. they brought it back to 3-2!! but then went down 5-2, with a minute left in the game. it was over. the team was incredibly short-staffed and had fought valiantly, but there was no no way, right? then, in one minute, the canucks scored 3 goals to tie the game. they went to OT, where defenceman filip hronek won the opening faceoff, and the canucks won. this was the first time in NHL history that a team came back from being down 3 goals in the final minute, and won the game. (the next day, they were eliminated after minnesota won a game against the sharks).
elias pettersson, a forward who wears #40 for the canucks, has been on the team since his rookie season in 2018-2019. in 2022, the team drafted elias pettersson (yes, really), a defenceman. he was picked in the third round and this is his first year playing in north america, so he really wasn’t expected to make the NHL team at all. he did, though, and even made carson soucy expendable, which meant we had two elias petterssons playing on the team! then, using assets from the jt miller trade, the canucks acquired marcus pettersson, another defenceman. we now had 3 petterssons, pettersson cubed if you will. it led to this iconic moment in the play-by-play:

Game of Thrones; Gender of Sound
Tumblr media
When I polled this option earlier the landslide victory was for Oberyn himself, and I fully concur. This man is MOST assuredly an advocate for women using their voices. I'm excited to write for this character eventually, once I get into that headspace. In the interim, please enjoy these continued quotes from Anne Carson's "The Gender of Sound"...
Tumblr media
In the Pythagorean Table of Opposites, we find attributes like curving, dark, secret, evil, ever-moving that are not self-contained and lacking its own boundaries This is juxtaposed by the attributes of straight, light, honest, good, stable, self-contained and firmly bonded to an air of masculinity. Ololyga is a shriek or ritual shout that was peculiar to females. It is a high-pitched piercing cry uttered at certain climactic moments in ritual practice like human sacrifice, the birth of a child or feminine festivals. Eleleu, Elelizo, Alala, Alalazo: cry of intense pleasure or intense pain Artemis is called keladeine, which means a loud roaring noise as of wind or rushing water or the tumult of battle. Or using the term “iocheaira” which means she who pours forth the cry”. Timyche: Pythagorean heroine who bites off her own tongue rather than say the wrong thing
