post-concert highs (Geminitay Appreciation <333)
Sweat dripped off Gem’s face, down her arms, and soaked her clothing. Working under the heat of the spotlights for an hour and a half would do that to anyone. She was sure she smelled and that her clothes would need to be run through the washing machine twice but these shows always felt so exhilarating that she couldn’t dwell on the discomfort for long.
“Woo!” Impulse enthusiastically threw his hands up in the air once they entered the room. They had recently finished performing and talking to fans at a meet and greet. “Fantastic job, everyone! That was great!”
“I’ll never get over this high.” Scott looked exhausted but the grin on his face was wide. He bent over to grab a few water bottles from the flat for himself and his bandmates. When he turned back to them, he called out, “Hey, catch!” The first bottle was tossed to Impulse, who caught it with ease. Gem was thrown the next one. She had to reach a bit to be able to catch it before it hit something other than her hands but she did manage it. Scott and Impulse both cheered for her.
“It’s so cool that they love our music.” Gem felt pride build in her chest. They had released their first album “Cherry Blossoms” and they were overwhelmed with love and support. Gem wasn’t sure how so many people discovered their little band from the middle of nowhere online but she was not going to complain. Impulse had always been the one to handle their @gemandthescotts social media accounts and then the label whom they now work under. He would be the one to know all of the behind-the-scenes work on that front. Maybe she should ask him in-depth about it one day. “I wasn’t sure if we would’ve ever gotten out of my mom’s garage.”
“I knew we would.” Scott leaned forward to grab one of the towels sitting on the coffee table. He used it to help some of the sweat drifting off of him but he made sure not to touch his eye makeup. The blue would mark the white towel easily, seeing how much sweat would combine with it. “We did win our town’s Battle of the Bands three years in a row.”
“We also sucked for a long time though.” Impulse chuckled as he thought back to when they were still learning and finding their sound. “Your mom tried to be polite but I think we are the real reason she soundproofed the garage when we were ten.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised.” Gem snorted at that. “She did always die on the inside when I said Scott was coming over.”
“Which one?” Scott asked, greatly amused at Gem’s words. Her mom had always been great to all three of them and they all loved her but they did like to joke around about being her annoying children. “Impulse Scott or me Scott?” “Both, duh. Mom would live in fear, never knowing which Scott was coming to haunt her doorstep!” Gem put on her best ghostly voice, even adding little ghost “oooo”ing noises at the end.
“She must have been so relieved when we started calling Impulse by a nickname.” Scott shifted his gaze to Impulse, a sly look in his eyes. “That way she could remember that Impulse was the one bad at the drums.” Impulse gasped, returning Scott’s sly expression with a flabbergasted one. “What do you mean? Are you saying I haven’t always been this perfect? I will let you know that my rhythm has been impeccable since I first held a pair of drumsticks.” “I could say I would pay to experience that again but I value being able to hear too much so I will have to graciously decline.” Scott continued to tease his friend, which just made Impulse gasp dramatically again.
Their lighthearted quips went back and forth for several moments. Gem just smiled lazily at them, taking sips of her water as she listened. She was grateful to have her closest friends as her bandmates. “You both are idiots.”
“How am I an idiot when I am supposed to be the smart Scott?” Impulse’s attention turned to her for a moment before shifting to side-eye Scott. “That guy though… hmm…” “Oh, shove off.” Scott tossed the now-empty water bottle at Impulse. It managed to hit his knee but it didn’t do anything more than make a few little crinkly sounds.
“I don’t know why we’re even friends.” Impulse wiped several non-existent tears from his eyes. “You’re so mean to me.”
“You love me.” Scott blew him a kiss in response. Impulse grabbed the blown kiss from the air and placed it on his cheek. “Hey, where is my kiss?” Gem scrunched her nose at them, a false hurt written all over her face. “Last I heard, it’s ‘Gem and the Scotts’, not ‘Dumb and Dumber’! Don’t I deserve some love too?”
Impulse and Scott shared brief eye contact, mischief radiating off of them now. Oh no. What did she manage to spur both of them on about at the same time? Did all guys named Scott have a telepathic link that she didn’t know about?
Next thing she knew, Scott had plopped down to her right and wrapped his arms around her shoulders. Impulse came in on the other side soon after.
“Hey!” Gem squeaked at their sudden attack. “Gross, I can feel your sweat. I said a kiss! I did not say ‘Everyone, jump on Gem!’” “We’re all sweaty already so it’s all good!” Impulse’s yellow face paint smudged against the black side of her shirt. The yellow side would have faded in more but she knew they would get cleaned enough to get the stain out.
“It can be both,” Scott responded at the same time as Impulse. He placed a quick kiss on her cheek and Gem just laughed at both of them.
“Okay, okay! You win!” Gem spread herself out as a way to nudge them off of her. She wasn’t mad at them but she did require to have her space again. “Off now, please. I am already hot enough without you two breathing on me.”
They complied instantly, getting off of both her and the couch she was sitting on. All three of them were laughing to the point it was a struggle to breathe. Their bodies were reacting to their little exchange, the adrenaline from the show, and the exhaustion they all felt weighing on them. Impulse was even doubling over and Scott had his head thrown back as they did so.
“I need to take a shower, change into something soft, and then pass out as soon as I’m under the covers.” Scott yawned loudly, putting his hand over his mouth as if to cover it.
“I need to take a shower and such too.” Impulse agreed with Scott’s plan of action. “Probably before the post-concert energy wears off.”
Gem groaned, leaning her head back against the couch. “I think it’s already worn off for me.”
“This is just an excuse for a sleepover.” Scott slid off his transparent, blue coat before tossing it on the back of the couch. “We will just do the sleeping part a little earlier than usual.”
“Ooo, yes!” Impulse lit up at Scott’s suggestion. “Gem, would you do us, the Scotts, the honor of having a sleepover in your room?” “You two act like we don’t have sleepovers almost every night.” Gem rolled her eyes affectionately. Everything was an excuse for a sleepover with these two. The question wasn’t if they were going to, because they usually were. It was more of debating if they were going to sleep early or if they were going to do whatever various activities they wanted to before sleeping. “Honestly, you two are so clingy.”
“Maybe,” Scott shrugged a shoulder with a cheeky smile on his face, “but you love us.”
“That’s debatable.” She stretched her arms up with a yawn, joints popping as she did so. Gem breathed out a soft sigh of relief as some of the tension left her. She did feel a little bit better but her body was still sore.
“Hey, you don’t mean that!” Impulse gave her the worst fake pout she had ever seen.
“Mhm, fine. I love you both.” Gem reassured them with a content smile. A happy buzz sent sparkling sensations throughout her body. One of her childhood dreams was becoming her reality and she was doing it with two people she cared deeply for. Nothing could be better than this.
A/N: I meant to write for @dronepikachu's Gem Week but I don't think I will have time before the week is over so here is one I wrote recently that can go under Prompt 1 and Prompt 4 for the writers! 'Many iconic heroes from literary history, due to their status within the public domain, have been adapted countless times to the big screen. There's bound to be a new film or series about King Arthur, Robin Hood, Zorro, Tarzan, or the Three Musketeers every few years, but there isn’t a character with more screen appearances than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Many adaptations of the character have tried to replicate the tone intrinsic to Doyle’s original stories, but the BBC series Sherlock made the radical decision to set the character in modern times, completely inverting expectations about his mythology. Although Sherlock did a great job of revamping some of the most iconic stories from Doyle’s era, Andrew Scott’s scene-stealing performance as the brilliant Jim Moriarty instantly ranked among television’s greatest villains.
Andrew Scott's Moriarty Added Legitimate Stakes to 'Sherlock'
What was most remarkable about Sherlock is that, despite minor shifts meant to reflect the new historical setting, the show was relatively faithful to the dynamics at play in Doyle’s original stories. Benedict Cumberbatch’s version of Sherlock is a dogmatic, isolated loner whose expertise at deduction makes him an integral (albeit obnoxious) ally to London’s Metropolitan Police Force, including Detective Inspector Greg Lestrade (Rupert Graves). After pairing with the veteran John Watson (Martin Freeman) to work on the “A Study in Pink” case, Sherlock realizes that the two have a potentially lucrative opportunity to work together in solving London’s most beguiling cases. As entertaining as the chemistry between Cumberbatch and Freeman was, Sherlock needed a legitimately intimidating villain in order to raise the stakes. Without a larger threat at play, Sherlock risked becoming just another network buddy cop mystery series, such as the rival Doyle adaptation Elementary.
A sure way to introduce a greater level of intensity to the series is to add Holmes’ most iconic villain, and the series did a great job at building up to Scott’s first debut as the character. Although initially Sherlock’s brother, the governmental agent Mycroft (Mark Gatiss) appears to be a barrier within his new detective agency, it’s eventually revealed that there are more insidious forces at play. Scott’s version of Moriarty is the show’s only character who is Holmes’ intellectual equal. While many of the most entertaining moments on Sherlock involve Cumberbatch belligerently proving his opponents wrong, Scott’s Moriarty is a man whose motivations he cannot crack. The conversations between Scott and Cumberbatch spark with energy because Holmes can’t be two steps ahead of his new rival; for once, Holmes is the one who is just trying to keep up.
Beyond the intellectual threat that he poses to the titular detective, Scott’s Moriarty has completely opposite morals compared to Holmes. Although Sherlock is often bewildered and willfully ignorant of the patterns of human behavior, he seeks to bridge a great understanding that would allow him to connect with others. None of that empathy is present within Moriarty; he views his intelligence as a commodity and callously disregards anyone who can’t keep up with him. While Sherlock seems to enjoy pointing out the errors in others’ ways, Moriarty takes a sick pleasure in creating scenarios where people are forced to make morally compromising decisions. By showing the negative effects that extreme intelligence can have, Moriarty forces Sherlock himself to find his inner heroism. It’s a level of nuance that simply isn’t present in other depictions of the character.
Andrew Scott’s Moriarty Is the Best Version of the Character
Scott certainly isn’t the first great actor to step into Moriarty’s shows; Jared Harris memorably appeared as the ruthless professor in Guy Ritchie’s action sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. While other versions of the villain tend to emphasize his formal background and influence upon London’s high society, Scott’s interpretation of Moriarty embodies modern fears about internet terrorism and outsiderism. Often concocting various schemes in order to catch the attention of the media, Scott’s Moriarty revels in the opportunity to “play the bad guy” on a public stage. While there are escalating stakes once he begins putting real people in danger, Moriarty can’t help but view his plans as one part of an elaborate game.
Sherlock utilized many of the best works from Doyle’s bibliography as inspiration for Moriarty, with great episodes inspired by the classic stories “The Great Game” and “The Reichenbach Fall.” Despite these classical inspirations, Moriarty’s depiction on Sherlock was retrofitted to reflect Scott’s personality. This is a version of Moriarty who is flamboyant, comically manipulative, and desperately seeking attention; in one instance in the finale “The Final Problem,” he has an entire dance sequence dedicated to Queen’s “I Want To Break Free.” It was a bold reimagining of the character that nonetheless reflected his literary roots as an agent of chaos, leading to Sherlock's Moriarty becoming one of the most defining villains of the modern “prestige television era.”
‘Sherlock’ Suffered Without Moriarty
While the early seasons of Sherlock sparked lively reactions with their creative new versions of classic narratives, the series began to suffer dramatically in terms of quality as it moved forward. Sherlock’s decline can partially be linked to the absence of Moriarty within the story; without a character that showed what Sherlock could become if his more chaotic impulses took over, Cumberbatch’s portrayal felt rather one note. The dark sense of humor that Scott had introduced to the series was also largely absent, leaving Sherlock in an uncomfortable place of self-seriousness.
Although the show attempted to introduce a few new antagonists, there wasn’t another villain on Sherlock who matched Moriarty’s screen presence. Compared to the energetic performance that Scott gave, Lars Mikkelsen’s Charles Augustus Magnussen felt like just another brooding terrorist, and Sian Brooke’s Eurus made for more of a half-hearted tie to Sherlock’s past. While these actors can’t be faulted for their performances, it’s hard living up to the incredible work Scott did in modernizing one of the greatest villains of all time.'

THE KING OF FNAF?
Read of AO3
< this is Chapter 1 >
disclaimers: This all takes place much after the events of each canon, Aftons & Emilys meet Fnaf: the musical, This is based off the gacha Fnaf concept of aftons meet past/future/au/canon/etc, This fanfic features my personal headcanons & theories and a Fnaf AU alike to gacha AUs (aftons can transform into their animatronic form, aftons have ther abilities, illusion discs make them seem normal, Ennard, etc) there's no need to get mad if you disagree with stuff, There's some canon-typical violence, And there's two ships (Nate x Mark, Michael x Jeremy Fitzgerald)
"Liz please I need to get some sleep before my shift toni-" right as Michael finished his
sentence, the doorbell rang. Elizabeth walked over to the door, turning on her illusion disc
and kicking any visible bloody appendage out of sight. She opened the door and stared down
the men outside with her big green eyes. "Who the fuck are you?" She asked, forgetting she
appears as a child. "Wow! No need to curse!" the man with the dyed hair exclaimed, "I'm
Mark, this is Nate, and this is... Uhh what's your name again?" He turned to the man in the
purple hoodie. "AJ!! ITS AJ!! IS IT REALLY SO HARD TO REMEMBER?!" He screeched,
it hurts Elizabeth's ears. "Shut up, stop shouting like a 5 year old, who's the last guy?" She
asked, pointing at the man in the bloody suit. "That man goes by many nam-" Mark started,
but was cut off by that same man. "Matt, or Scott, or William, or Dave, or evil dirtbag with a
chainsaw, or phone gu- okay yeah that's a lot of names. Most people just call me Matt
though" he chuckled, Lizzy raised an eyebrow. "Why are you here?" She asked, not wanting
to deal with adults right now. "Well, our car broke down and we need a place to stay..." Nate
started, "...and your house seemed more welcoming than your neighbour's, we were kicked
off the property" Mark finished. Elizabeth stared at them for a moment, confused, and then
turned to the inside of the house, "MIKE! THERE'S PEOPLE AT THE DOOR THAT WANT
TO STAY!" She shouted, hoping her brother heard. A bang was heard from the vents above
her, followed by a soft, robotic 'fuck'. "Enn, you have to stop spying on people from the
vents" she shook her head. Mark and Nate looked at each other, worried if they made the
right decision. After a few seconds, a man barely resembling Michael walked in to the room.
"Mike, this is Mark, Nate, Matt, and uhh-" Liz started to explain, but forgot the purple
hoodie-d guy's name. "AJ!" he exclaimed in anger. "James, exactly what I said. Anyways
they want to spend the night here because their car broke or something" she continued.
Michael thought for a moment, staring at a hidden blood spot on the wall, slightly terrified of
how that might go. "You know what? I'm sure dad will appreciate some guests, and I'm sure
Ennard will love it too" he said finally, winking to Liz, implying the four guests will not
leave the house unless it be in ghost/soul form. AJ started to shiver, it was getting cold
outside. "Come on in!" Michael smiled wide, fixing his loose tie which had his illusion disc
in it. The fours walked in and Lizzy closed the door. She went to the kitchen because she was
hungry and left the group and Michael all alone. Michael led them to the living room, which
was luckily empty. He took out his phone and texted the family group chat (which had very
little messages in it) "guests over, get En to clean up all the rooms and leave the vents, get
him his illusion disc too. C, get yours, it's on dad's table in the workshop. Dad, please don't
murder them. Liz, get mom and make some dinner, they probably need to eat. And under no
circumstances will any of you be talking about the past!! We are the Schmidt family until
they leave tomorrow morning." He sent the message and sank on the couch next to Mark. He
noticed two pins mark had on his shirt, one read "Freddy Fazbear's pizzaria security" and
they other was a bisexual pride flag. Mike raised an eyebrow, "you wor- uhh you like men
and women?" He thought it might be easier to approach that subject first. "yeah- I mean I
have a boyfriend" Mark pointed to Nate, who was chatting with AJ. "Ohhh, cool! I'm gay,
and I have a boyfriend too" Mike responded, wondering what Jeremy was doing right now.
"Nice" Mark pulled his phone, bored. His phone's wallpaper was him, Nate, a weird plushie
version of Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy on the background of a burned building with a
sign reading "Freddy Fazbear's pizzaria" in big letters and "get some Freddy-filled fun
today!" In a smaller font. Mike cringed at that slogan, ""don't ask as about our kids" was a
better one" he thought to himself. He wanted to ask about the job because he never saw Mark around, and he knew literally all of the workers at Fazbear entertainment's places. Besides,
those looked nothing like the animatronics from the actual locations, and that building didn't
look like any location! He was confused and concerned. "You uhh.. you work at Freddy's?"
He asked quietly, afraid of the answer. "Oh, uh, yeah, I'm a- or well, I WAS a nightguard
before this psycho burned his own place down." Mark chuckled and pointed at Matt, which
concerned Michael so much more. Freddy's locations belong to either his dad or his dad's
"friend", not this random dude! "I thought the owners were William Afton, Dave Miller, and
Henry Emily?" He said confused, attempting to sound normal. "Those are all his nicknames"
Mark chuckled again.
Before Michael could say anything further, William walked through the front door, looking
exhausted and with a big stain of blood on his clothes. "It rained today." He said through
gritted teeth, still in pain from the springlocks. Michael burst out laughing, glad his dad got
springlocked again. Mark stared at the blood with wide eyes and internal panic, Nate and AJ
did the same. Matt looked for a moment, then made a face of understanding, "you work with
springlocks too?" He asked, rolling his sleeves up to reveal scars from his old springlocks
suits. "Yep" William unbuttoned the two top buttons of his shirt, revealing deep scarring from
countless springlocks failures. "Oof, that's rough buddy" Matt responded as he got up and
reached his hand for a handshake, "Matt, or Afton, nice to-" but he was cut off by Michael
and William. "AFTON?!" they screamed in unison, shocked at this discovery.

"One thing about trains: It doesn't matter where they're going. What matters is deciding to get on." - Conductor
Twenty years ago, The Polar Express made it's theatrical debut in cinemas across the United States. Loosely based on the 1985 children's book of the same name written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, the film was directed by Robert Zemeckis (who also directed the Back To The Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, etc.) With Alan Silvestri producing the film's music. Although the film's premiere was held at the Chicago International Film Fesitval on October 13th 2004, the theatrical debut took place on November 10th of that year.
Among the cast members was Tom Hanks (the voice of Woody in the Disney-Pixar Toy Story franchise) who took on the roles of Chris the Hero Boy, the Conductor, the Hobo, the Ebenezer Scrooge Puppet, Santa Claus, Chris' Father, and the narrator, although Chris' child voice was done by Daryl Sabara with additional motion capture done by Josh Hutcherson.
Other cast members include:
Nona Gaye (voice), Darrian O Driscoll (additional motion capture), Meagan Moore (singing voice), and Tinashe (motion-capture model) as Holly the Hero Girl.
Peter Scolari (motion capture), Hayden McFarland (additional motion-capture), Jimmy Bennett (voice), and Matthew Hall (singing voice) as Billy the Lonely Boy.
Eddie Deezen and Jimmy Pinchak (additional motion capture) as Know-It-All.
Michael Jeter (voice) and André Sogliuzzo (additional voice) as Steamer the Engineer and Smokey the Fireman.
Leslie Zemeckis (motion capture), Isabella Peregrina (voice) and Ashly Holloway (additional motion capture) as Sister Sarah and Chris' Mother.
Dylan Cash as a Boy on the Train.
Brendan King and Andy Pellick as the Pastry Chefs.
Josh Eli, Rolandes Hendricks, Jon Scott, Sean Scott, Mark Mendonca, Mark Goodman, Gregory Gast, and Gordon Hart as the Waiters.
Julene Renee as Red Head Girl and an Elf.
Chris Coppola and Connor Matheus (additional motion capture) as Gus the Toothless Boy and an Elf.
Phil Fondacaro, Debbie Lee Carrington, Mark Povinelli, and Ed Gale as the Elves.
Charles Fleischer as the Elf General.
Steven Tyler as the Elf Lieutenant and Elf Singer.
The locomotive that pulls the train is based on No. 1225, an N-1 class 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type locomotive that was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in October 1941 to pull freight trains for the Pere Marquette Railway. The locomotive's design and sounds were used for the Polar Express while the whistle came from Sierra Railway No. 3, a 4-6-0 "Ten Wheeler" locomotive built by the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works March 26, 1891.
Upon it's release, the film was met with mixed reviews with many people labeling the film as a "Christmas Classic" and others criticizing the film's characters as "lifeless zombies". The movie recieved a Rotten Tomatoes score of 56% but had otherwise performed successfully in the box office at $318.2 million reaching over the film's budget of $165-170 million. Over the years follwing it's theatrical debut, the film would be released to home media both on DVD and VHS with occasional DVD releases from time to time.
Like all films, The Polar Express also has marketing and other promotional materials. One example comes in the form of games based on the film such as a PS2 game of the same name, a Ticket Chase game, a Train Adventure game, and so forth. Another example is with model railroad and toy train companies such as Lionel and Brio have made various train sets based on the Polar Express train.
A third example includes various Polar Express-themed train ride events loosely based on the train's journey taking place at various heritage railroads during the Christmas season such as on the Durango & Silverton, Grand Canyon Railway, the B&O Railroad Museum, and even from Pere Marquette 1225, although under the name of "North Pole Express". In addition, SeaWorld Orlando did a temporary Christmas Layover of the Wild Arctic motion simulator ride called the "Polar Express Experience" from 2007 to 2015. Other forms of marketing, promotional materials, and merch has come or have came in the form of various board games such as a matching game and Train-opoly, a book showcasing the film's concept art, and even a limited edition cereal.
Despite what some people think of the movie, The Polar Express continues to remain one of the most iconic Christmas movies to this day making occasional returns to cinemas during the Christmas season alongside various other Christmas movies. In fact, this is my number one favorite Christmas movie of all time not just because I'm obviously a railfan, but it's also because that this was the first ever movie I have seen in the theaters. It was this film, alongside Thomas The Tank Engine and I Love Toy Trains, that have gotten me into steam locomotives and trains in general.
To Robert Zemeckis, Alan Silvestri, Tom Hanks, and everyone else who took part in the making of this film, thank you. Happy 20th anniversary to The Polar Express!
Models and Route by: K&L Trainz, Auran and Download Station

This week in aviation history
21 February 1961: A Milestone in Human Space Exploration. Imagine a time when space travel was more than a wild fantasy, a time when it transformed into a thrilling reality. The week of February 21, 1961, marked such a pivotal moment in aviation history. It was the final training phase for the Mercury 7 astronauts, an elite group destined to become America's first voyagers into the great unknown of space.
The Heroes of the Skies: Mercury 7

The Mercury 7 astronauts pose in front of a Convair F-106 (NASA)
These seven determined men were: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. These individuals weren't just pilots; they were pioneers at the vanguard of a new era. Selected from a pool of over 500 candidates, they each possessed the 'right stuff' – a blend of skill, courage, and determination that set them apart as the best of the best.
Training for the Unknown
Their training was unlike anything seen before. It was rigorous, pushing the boundaries of physical and mental endurance. They underwent grueling tests that simulated the harsh conditions of space – from spinning in centrifuges to enduring periods of weightlessness. This week in 1961, as they entered the final stages of their training, the anticipation and excitement were palpable, not just among the astronauts but across the nation.
The Chosen Three: Shepard, Grissom, and Glenn
In a significant announcement, Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, and John Glenn were selected for the initial flights. Shepard, with his steely nerves and exceptional piloting skills, was slated for the first American manned spaceflight. Grissom, known for his calm under pressure, was set to follow. And Glenn, a decorated Marine pilot, would become the first American to orbit the Earth.
A Legacy That Echoes Through Time
The Mercury 7's journey was more than a series of space missions; it was a testament to human ambition and resilience. Their achievements laid the groundwork for future space exploration, paving the way for moon landings and even Mars missions that we dream of today.
Celebrating the Courage and Vision
As we remember this significant week in aviation history, let's not just reflect on the technological achievements, but also the spirit of exploration that drove these seven men. They ventured into the unknown, not just for themselves, but for all of humanity, inspiring generations to look up at the stars and dream big.
The legacy of the Mercury 7 astronauts continues to inspire us, reminding us that with courage, vision, and determination, reminding us that the sky is not the limit – it's just the beginning.

Consumer Guide / No.126 / MONDO TRASHO - a 5 piece psych, garage band hailing from Liverpool - with Mark Watkins.
MW: When did the band form and why the name MONDO TRASHO?
Jay Muat: We love obscure films and counterculture and weird things. Russ Meyer and John Waters were big influences when starting off. We got the name from John Waters, his first film from 1969. We were inspired by the Mondo movement of the 1960's. We wanted the word Mondo in the name of the band and so ended up with Mondo Trasho.
Chris 'Moz' Green: I like to to say, although this is not a true translation, that the world is full of rubbish. Me and Jay got the band together years ago. Its been an ongoing project. Losing a few drummers along the way. I feel now being 5 piece and the way the band sounds / feels is what I've always wanted it to be.
Dan Myers: I joined about 2 years ago. I knew the guys were looking for a guitarist through my old band mate Jack Birch, from The Heavy North. I got to listen to a lot of live recordings and demos. 'Strangers' really stood out to me; it made me want to join the band.
MW: What are the band's influences and describe your sound...
Chris 'Moz' Green: Inspired by the grandiose of 60's Scott Walker, the growl of like, The Doors, and weirdness of Frank Zappa, and The B52's, and the obscurity of the Flamin' Groovies. We started out being inspired by The Flat Duo Jets, The Cramps, The Doors and the sound has grown from there. We've added more of a garage punk sound and it has grown and evolved from there.
Jay Muat: I'm really into Love, old film soundtracks, Giallo (lounge type music), The La's, Pale Fountains, Ennio Morricone.
Dan Myers: I got into a lot of blues stuff when I was younger like Peter Green, and also early Black Keys, Queens of the Stone Age and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club too. Over time that's broadened into more cinematic stuff.
MW: Who does what in the band, and who supports Liverpool, Everton, maybe even Tranmere Rovers?!
Chris 'Moz' Green: I’m Chris 'Moz' Green I play Hammond organ & electric piano backing vocals sometimes play the Theremin. Not a football fan, I was raised a Liverpool Fan.
Then you’ve got Jay Muat - vocals & guitar, but he’s not really into football at all.
There's Dan Myers - guitar & backing vocals. He’s a Red. I reckon he cried when the news about Klopp broke but wouldn’t admit it to us haha.
Luke Hamilton plays bass and does backing vocals. He's not really a football fan, says he's a blue nose (he goes the game).
Finally, Greg Mitchell on drums. He is just a normal Everton fan.
MW: What do you like best about Liverpool? The least? What do you think are some common misconceptions about its citizens and the city itself?
Chris 'Moz' Green: It's a weird place because it's in a constant flux. There's always new buildings or things shutting down (mainly good live music venues). You get used to places being there and one day it's gone ("There are places I remember"...as the Beatles song goes).
It is a music city. There's loads of bands doing different music, getting signed, doing tours and that. Not everyone is a Beatles mop top fanatic. It's a boss place. Some of the people are boss. Liverpool has become a city break / Hen and staff party and University city. Worst thing is football match traffic - the whole of north Liverpool goes nuts on match day.
MW: Top 5. What are your favourite surf records of all time?
Chris 'Moz' Green: Of course we all love: Link Wray, Dick Dale,The Lively Ones, The Centurions, The Jokers, Freckles, The B52's and The Del Roswells. Top 5 are hard, but;
5. Anything by the Razorbills. More people should listen to this band. They are just a great band. Everything they do sounds amazing to me. Wish I could see them live.
4. The Impacts - 'Wipe Out'. Always sounds great, my go to for decent surf.
3. 'Unleashed' by The Eliminators. When I first heard the album I was like woah! how did I miss these from the 60's. Amazing instrumental surf boss horns.
2. Guantanamo Baywatch albums are boss. Modern surf bands who are solid. We were lucky to play with Night Beats last year and he was touring with Chris Scott the drummer from GB - my jaw was on the floor watching him.
1. 'Lolita Ya Ya' - The Ventures. I never get bored of this track, the harpsichord is boss. Fits into any playlists.
MW: Top 5. What are your favourite psych records of all time?
Jay Muat: Honourable mentions: The Animals, (some) Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, The Kinks, (loads of) Frank Zappa, 'Abbey Road' and more modern stuff like Triptides or Levitation Room.
5. The Seeds / 13th Floor Elevators debut albums. Just really good albums I remember finding both of these when I was 16 and thinking I'd unearthed rare gems.
4. Nuggets compilation - it's just boss. Got loads of amazing tracks on it from bands who deserved to be massive. 'Don't Look Back' by The Remains is such a good tune; it introduced us to so many great bands. When writing songs it's always worth at looking for references.
3. Love's 'Forever Changes' (1967) - just perfect.
2. The Doors' first 3 albums taught us so much. When we first started we didn't have a bass player and 'Moz' just played bass on the Hammond. It's the blueprint for us.
1. 'Freak Out' by The Mothers of Invention (1966). I know it is a parody by Frank Zappa of the bands of the time, but it's the best. It's an album that has everything. It stays with you after the first time you hear it. Goes from absolute scary freak outs to Blues Psych. 'Help I'm A Rock' is an go to always. Love putting that on when with unsuspecting company...
MW: What did you think of the recent Brit Awards?
Chris 'Moz' Green: I didn't really watch it. You knew that Raye was going to win loads which is boss for her. But award shows are just the big music labels just pushing shoehorning their artist in. It's just a big advert now. It's too big, too monoculture for me. It's not what it used to be: I mean seeing Jarvis with Michael Jackson. That would never happen again, everyone is too well behaved at the award shows.
Dan Myers: I didn't even know it was on, in all honesty.
MW: Do any of you enjoy playing darts and, if so, to what degree / ability?!
Chris 'Moz' Green: Me and Luke are darts players. Luke is the better player, but I played a lot when I was a teenager, having a dart board in the house. Playing round the clock for years getting ready for the pub tournaments.
We played a lot when we used to work with each other. We worked with a fella who made his own darts out of m10 bolts and nuts, because modern darts were too light for him. It was funny to watch until he wrecked every dart board he used, and we got kicked out of pubs.
Luke's really good under pressure. I'm better after 4 pints.
MW: Who usually gets the beers in and what tend to be your tipples?
Dan Myers: We're pretty good at getting round in. Think it's Greg's next!
Chris 'Moz' Green: Dan's a Guinness drinker. Luke likes a heavy stout, Jays drinks cider, Greggs into Lager and 'Moz' is into red ale and Belgian bevys.
MW: What are MONDO TRASHO's plans for the rest of 2024?
Chris 'Moz' Green: We have a lot of tracks recorded that need mixing. We were very lucky to get sessions in the George Martin studio at LIPA with our mate Jamie Lindberg. It was a good experience but because life gets in the way its taken a long time to get each song ready.
Jay Muat: Release more songs, reach more people.

UNKNOWN PLEASURES 01.25.2024
》 DJ: REED KAVANAH
This is gonna be long but fuck it: people of Chattanooga, you're so goddamn lovely. I'm genuinely grateful that I get to look forward to Unknown Pleasures every month now, it's worth every minute of the drive from Nashville - I'm on my laptop so I can't use emojis, but imagine all the sappy ones right here, because you're all gorgeous.
The list specifies what the performers danced to. It's all their own picks, besides a couple fill-ins - they got skills and amazing taste to boot (I'm lucky to have heard some synth music Phoenix is working on and it slaps heavily).
Also, here's a SoundCloud mix excerpted from the middle of the live mix! Let me know if you want more of these.
I'll be joined by DJ THEOCULTT for our extra-cyberpunk event next month, and I'm stoked to finally be in town for their set (I've seen them go hard when I've played some of my own personal top-tier favs - this always warms my heart). Also, Ariel is coming back with an experimental piece combining her live performance with a music-video-style VHS piece my friend Julia and I shot with her (sounds complicated but I promise it's fun)... AND we've got CRT from Atlanta playing a sick live industrial/body set. Be sure to check out CRT's label, DKA Records - they're based in Atlanta, but they put out great electronic music from all over the world, and you'll almost certainly find something interesting (like FUEDAL, whose track "Movin" you heard on Thursday).
One last thing: R.I.P. Luis Vasquez, Juan Mendez, and Simone Ling. They were massive losses to music, gone for tragic reasons. Do your thing, but please be safe and carry naloxone. DIY music is in dire straits, and we can't afford to lose any more of the beautiful, sensitive people who keep it going - there's work to do and shows to see.
Can't wait to see y'all again.
xoxo,
-R.K.
P.S: There's a requests board by the booth now - I can't play 'em all but I like to know what you like, so hit me! Apologies to whoever requested Boy Harsher's "Motion," cuz I accidentally played "Electric" instead lol - I have a BH setlist hanging on the wall behind me as we speak... I've committed a sin against Jae and Gus... but I shall atone next month, bet.
