Lights camera...calm down!

Watching Master Chef Junior and I can't help to notice that so many of the kids especially during to camera interviews do silly hand gestures, little dance movements, pull faces, etc. It really seems like they are doing Tik Tok dances or anything associated with constant social media and they are so accustomed to not only watching these videos constantly, but also creating their own that I think children end up acting a fool (sorry not sorry) without thinking whenever a camera is on them. And it doesn't sit well with me. To be fair I am not against social media or children having it, still it's apparent it's becoming a bit much.

I'm watching Master Chef Junior, and I feel like a young Andrew (in an au where he was adopted and raised by Mama Bee) would go in there at like nine years old (he's the second youngest) and stay silent literally the whole time other than when he presents his dishes, but he'd consistently make the best dishes and he'd win the whole thing.

au where marinette's parents own a small, struggling, but community-loved bakery outside of paris. she works after school and on weekends since her parents can't currently afford to hire any other employees, but she enjoys getting to know everyone in her neighborhood and uses her tip money to fund her sewing projects.

as the end of her junior high days approach, marinette is encouraged by her parents to apply to her dream high school, françoise dupont lycée of the arts, as a fashion student. she doesn't expect to actually get accepted, but knows her parents are right when they say there's no hurt in trying. after submitting her online store portfolio, where she does commissions and launches small projects like accessories, she receives feedback that the school board was beyond impressed with her work and would like to offer her a full-ride scholarship.

although it's hard for her to part from her parents for the first time in her life, they refuse to let her turn down the opportunity and practically pack her bags for her. after a very long and painful goodbye with lots of promises to call every single day, marinette leaves for paris.

she meets alya, her roommate and first friend at her new school. she's the daughter of a successful chef and is a promising journalist and creative writing student, she and marinette share many of their core subjects not relating to their majors.

marinette also meets chloé, the daughter of the mayor of france and alya's life-long enemy. the two go way back, with alya's mother being an old friend of chloe's father and having worked at his hotel restaurant before. the hate each other, and by association, chloé hates marinette — especially after finding out marinette is a fellow fashion major whose work scored much higher than her own.

then she meets adrien. adrien is a fellow fashion and modeling student who was eagerly accepted into the school despite his very late application. however, the principal was thrilled at the idea of having such a beloved model joining the student body, and didn't want to deal with chloé's threats of action if adrien was denied, so he was accepted with open arms.

adrien didn't exactly choose his majors, but rather just went along with what was expected of him. he already had a successful modeling career, so he took the classes despite there being little he didn't already know and have mastered. he was encouraged to join fashion classes as well, both by adults who assumed he was going to take after his father and by his best friend who wanted to spend as much time with him as possible.

adrien is easily impressed with just about every design marinette crafts and marinette admits it's a bit endearing the way adrien struggles to figure out where the sewing machine's on switch is. his father is equally impressed, if not even more so, and marinette is asked to become a paid intern upon winning a contest judged by gabriel agreste.

not to mention the kind old man she befriends, an older chinese man who owns a tea shop in petite asie. marinette admits to feeling a bit alienated without her mother, worried her classmates will look at her funny for cooking guangxi rice in the dorm kitchen or having late night gossip sessions on the phone in mandarin. he tells marinette she will always have a friend while in paris and that she's more connected to the city than she thinks.

eventually, marinette even finds herself befriending almost all of her classmates, and even one of her classmate's brothers. juleka couffaine is a modeling major and a fellow scholarship student, something she and marinette bond over. luka is just as sweet as his sister, and almost as quiet if you ignore his constant humming and guitar strumming.

he also applied to be a music major at françoise dupont, but was rejected. after a year of struggling and being bullied in public school, he dropped out to focus on working and supporting his family — taking some of the burden away from his single mother and making sure juleka never has to go without. throughout the course of their relationship, marinette is eventually able to discover the ridiculous reasons why luka wasn't accepted and encourages him to go back to school, as well as accept that he can't support his family if he doesn't let them support him as well (a lesson she also had to learn).

" so, this is where you've been hiding? " reo says when he found nagi sitting in one of the tables you set at the cooking classroom.

as president of the cooking club, you were allowed to use the room freely whenever you wanted.

" reo? " nagi calls as you turn to the purple haired boy at your door. reo can't help but feel the sense of home with you wearing the cute apron. a blush makes it's way to your face, you quickly turn around to resume cooking. turning off the heat from the stove and quickly plating. reo makes his way to sit opposite nagi. they seemed too invested in their batter that they don't notice you standing with the plate of food.

clearing your throat, the boys glace at you as you put the plate down. a force smile on your face.

reo winces at the food. the colours looked off if that was even possible. you call that edible food? how'd you even become the president of the cooking club. he looks over at nagi and he doesn't seem one bit digusted or even slightly. he watch as his friend take the first bite, his face unchanging. was it that bad he had to force a poker face to not break your heart?

" what's wrong, reo? " nagi questions before taking another spoonful of the fried rice. you can't help but let worry bite you bit by bit.

" do you... want me to feed you or something? " you can't help but turn away at the words that spill out of your mouth. you take the spoon from reos side and scoop the rice before eating it. it wasn't that bad, if he think you put poison in it then you'll certainly die right now.

he watches as you beam a smile at the food. you take another spoonful when you see him looking at you. you push the spoon towards him as he hesitantly opens his mouth and you're quick to push the spoon in. he chokes from the intrusion but swallows the rice nonetheless. suprised it wasn't so bad. you could replace the chefs in the mikage building with your cooking. the food looks unappetising but the taste was exquisite. he takes the spoon from your hand and start to devour his plate.

" y/n senpai! " a junior barges in with a paper at hand. he shoves the paper in your face as you scan it over and over.

right... the school was going to host an open house for the next freshmen. clubs are meant to plan what they were going to showcase and this junior already started planning the menu.

" um vice president said we're going to do a maid cafe theme... she also wanted you to check out the menu, said it's food you've cooked for her before. " you nod in understandment.

" what are these two doing here by the way, senpai? " the junior whispers as you can't help but giggle.

" they're my food connoisseurs. "

that was the first time reo met you and to say the least nagi didn't tell him why he was there. you were their classmate but you were barely in the classrooms. you managed to score well and maintain your grades. when you do attend classes, your classmates stared and treated you normally? he sees girls coming up to you with treats asking for advice on how to better the taste and he sees guys making jokes about getting Valentine's chocolate from you when the event was so far from coming back.

nagi doesn't speak much about you even if reo asked questions about you, the only answer he got was to ask you himself.

when the school open house came around. reo quickly dragged nagi out of the classroom to your club. some members dressed in maid dresses or suits and others in shirts that branded the clubs name. reo hoped to see you in a maid dress.

" welcome master, " a forced girly voice was heard, as a member bowed to reo and nagi.

looking in, reo was surprised. a very handsome butler was seated in one of the tables with many girls swarming him. girls holding out their spoon or fork with dessert, ready to feed him.

that male was you. you can't help but squirm under their attention.

" ahem, ladies. those desserts were made out of love, please enjoy them. " you announce as you push your glasses up from your face. standing up but the girls around you don't seem to buy it as they held your shoulders pushing you back down.

" are you reo mikage? " the vice president from the club calls from behind the boys as they turn. reo nods as nagi walks away, taking a vacant seat and playing his game as a waiter pushes a cup of lemon tea over.

" please save our president from the guests, it was nice to watch and be swoon but now... it's unsightly, " reo nods once more before making his way to you.

he grabs your arm and before you can comprehend anything he pushes you up.

" sorry ladies, we have something to do! " he calls back as he sprints for the door with you following behind.

everyone turn to look at each other. shock and surprise splattered everywhere, only a few seem unaffected, thanking reo but some were pissed at him for stealing the handsome butler.

" do you think reo is into him too? " one started and many continued. nagi can't help but listen in.

reo lead you to the roof. finally able to catch your breath, you loosen the tie as reo gazed at you. your hair sticking to your forehead, your low ponytail now loose and messy.

" I'm sorry, " he blurts out as you stare at him, not expecting the sudden apology.

" you're a mess because of me. " you can't help but laugh.

" I'm sorry too. you can't enjoy those food because of me, " reo frowns.

you take a seat as you lean against the rooftop fence. reo following suite.

" well even if I can't enjoy them now, I'm sure you'll make it up to me by cooking for me. " he suggested as you're stunned by him.

was the heir always so greedy and thick skinned? that's not true but it seemed like it.

" well whatever you want for saving me, prince charming. " you giggled as reo blush at the nickname.

Head cannon: that Leo is objectively bad/average at cooking

Yeah, he cooked while running away from his foster families….. on the run??? Running away!!!

People writing fics like he’s a junior master chef when it came to cooking when he probably stole food from trashcans or convenience stores and whatever he cooked was most likely ready to eat, since he definitely didn’t have a Coleman or seasonings.

Also…. His mother was a single mother running shifts/ a mechanic shop by herself with a family that most likely hated her . She would’ve had zero to NO time cooking, especially when it came teaching below double digit Leo how to cook.

So he would probably would have an aneurysm seeing a glass stove for the first time before figuring out all the mechanics.. because he had no one to teach him how to cook.

Including safety concerns. He’d 100% wouldn’t think twice about throwing in raw meat with vegetables and accidentally giving most of the Argo II crew food poisoning while his body’s not phased since he’s used to it.

Sorry, he’s bad at it probably 😭

Growing up eating delicious baked goods was one way to spark your interest in cooking, and your parent(s) always encouraged you! Your cooking skills flourished by the time you were a teen and you had only one goal in mind: becoming a celebrity chef. You work hard to achieve that dream.

Aspiration: Culinary Curator + Master Chef

Traits: Foodie, Hyper, Creative, Neurotic, Ambitious

Dulce realized her dream of becoming a celebrity chef at a young age. When she was found crying due to being bullied for her dyslexia, her mother, Noemí, knew she had to comfort her daughter. Noemí remembered the fond memories she had with her own mother in the kitchen, which inspired her to become a baker; so, she sought to recreate those memories. The plan worked, but Dulce discovered she preferred savory food over sweet food! Either way, the kitchen became their shared sanctuary. She immersed herself in the craft and began building her skills.

The turning point in her culinary journey came when she participated in the hit cooking competition show, Diced Junior. Despite the intense pressure and high stakes, she remained level-headed and impressed the judges with her creativity and refined palate. However, her own ego led to her elimination. Losing was a much-needed reality check that led her to reassess her motivations and ambitions. She realized that her love for cooking was fueled by the desire to be the best rather than bringing joy to others.

Dulce took a step back and focused on the art aspect of cooking and continued to share her recipes on social media. She had a few loyal followers, but the numbers began steadily rising after her episode of Diced Junior aired! Turns out, people found her quite charismatic and enjoyed her story. They were curious to see what was in store for young Dulce. While she was working on that, she also focused on her personal life. She hung out with her friends, spent time with her family, and played on the basketball team. She even dated a fellow Diced Junior competitor, Alex Marino.

Everything was going well, but as time went on, her resentment towards corrupt businessman Alfonso Alto grew stronger, leading to her exposé video. It was a huge risk, but Dulce managed to save her family business and put the criminal behind bars. Still, not everything was sunshine and rainbows after that. Life felt stagnant and she was ready to graduate high school, which seemed to drag on. Then, when Alex came back, she falsely believed that they wanted to rekindle their romantic relationship, which was not the case.

After saving the bakery and being heartbroken once again, Dulce is now focusing on herself and her dreams of becoming a celebrity chef. What does the future hold for this rising star?

oh man, this was my WIP for Rook Appreciation Week but that has uh, come and gone and it's still a WIP lmao

The idea was that we see Rook give gifts to each of the companions. This time, our companions reciprocate! Hence the name — "Fit for Rook" to match the in-game quest names for the gifts lmao

I only have like... 3 of the 7 companions written (Harding, Lucanis, and Bellara, though I don't think I fully finished Bel's or Harding's section) lmao. So here, have uh, all of that lmao. Approximately 1k words for these three. Might as well put it out there. I'm a little self-conscious of this one but oh well

Harding

It started with a plant — small variegated leaves of green, purple, and silver. Soft to the touch when Rook trailed her fingers down the vine, tiny boat-like flowers nestled between.

Stem to leaf to flower. It reminded her of home.

Emerald fire against the familiar shadowed halls of the Necropolis. The purple robes of teachers and classmates in every corner. The glint of the grave dowry she had to leave behind. Did Myrna and Vorgoth still have it, she wondered.

“What’s this about, Harding?” Rook swallowed the wave of homesickness that threatened to spill.

“I thought your room could use some brightening up! Can’t have you staring at fish all day, Rook.” Harding’s hand was on her hip as she laughed, easy and bright, before she turned her attention to the plant on the table. “It doesn’t need much attention, don’t worry. Just remember to water it every couple of days.”

“Ah. I’m sure the fish won’t mind sharing.” The quip was out of her mouth before thinking and Harding snorted at that.

“If the leaves start turning yellow, that means you’re over-watering,” the dwarf continued, “And if it’s getting a little spindly, you could take it out to the balcony for a bit. Give it some sunlight.”

Rook hummed in reply, fingers still stroking the leaves. She spent a bit of time in the Memorial Gardens as part of her Mourn Watcher duties. Those rose bushes weren’t caring for themselves, after all. But that was always a shared responsibility with the other junior Watchers.

This little thing, though? It was all hers — a scary prospect, on top of the whole saving the world thing.

“Softer than it looks, huh? Just like someone I know.” Harding knocked her shoulder with Rook’s before she hopped off the couch. “You can always let me know if you need some help.”

Lucanis

The Demon of Vyrantium was not what Rook expected.

A dark and broody master assassin? Yeah, sure, that checked out. Grocery shopping, though? That was always going to be a bit odd, she thought.

Their haul was underneath the table — bags of onions, carrots, garlic, and whatever else Lucanis thought they needed leaning against her legs as they waited for their drinks at Cafe Pietra. A tradition after every grocery run now.

Rook eyed the bag of onions. “How do we always seem to be running out of onions?”

“Onions are a fundamental ingredient in almost every kind of dish. They add depth and flavor. And they’re healthy for you.” Lucanis looked at her like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

She blinked at him. “Right.” She leaned her arms on the table. “I… don’t cook much.”

“I can see that. Bellara was quick to take you off the cooking roster, I hear.”

It wasn’t that she was uninterested in cooking — she had leafed through a few cookbooks of the famous chefs of Vanneska the Fourth and the Fifth. There just weren’t a lot of opportunities for it between classes, research, and Watcher duties. Rook, however, was well-acquainted with the dormitory cafeteria.

“Probably for the best.” Undead cooks didn’t care much for taste and junior Watchers didn’t get much of a say on the menu. “We’re all better off with me on dishwashing duty.”

Their drinks arrived — coffee for Lucanis (surprise, surprise) and hot chocolate for her. A sweet treat at the end of the world. She sighed happily into her cup at the first taste, Lucanis eyeing her intently.

“Would you like to learn?” He sipped at his coffee. “Cooking, I mean.”

Rook blinked at him, waiting to see if he was joking. The silence stretched as he took another sip. She cleared her throat and laughed almost nervously. “Me? I… maybe? I don’t know.”

It was on her mind all the way back to the Lighthouse. Her? Learning to cook? Now? She was caught up in the idea that she almost didn’t notice the little book on her dresser until it fell off when she was rummaging through her clothes.

She picked it up, curiosity getting the better of her as she thumbed through it. It was a small cookbook for beginners. Smartly annotated by varying hands, its pages soft and its spine showing signs of being well-loved.

A short note was tucked between the pages for spaghetti alla carbonara and gnocchi with pesto.

This was mine when I was a boy. Come find me before dinner. I will teach you.

Bellara

Giggles spilled through Rook’s room.

“She felt it all over. Her attraction to the hero, a powerful tingle, nearly exquisite,” Rook recited dramatically, before bursting into another fit of giggles, Bellara following suit. “Oh, Bel, I love it. I knew you were cooking up something good when I caught you last time. You could almost say I felt it all over, like—”

“Rook!” Bellara squealed, snatching the notebook from Rook’s hands, face flushed from the compliment. Rook only grinned.

Bellara looked down at the notebook on her lap and then back at Rook. “Do you really think it's good? I feel like I got a little sloppy with the part where the hero goes—”

“It’s perfect, Bel,” Rook interrupted her. “I’d love to read more. If you want me to.”

“Thank you.” Bellara let out a breathless laugh. “Actually…” She bit her lip and scooted closer to Rook on the couch, then lowered her voice as if to share a secret. “I, uh, based the hero off… you.”

“Me?”

“You're just so cool,” she said in a rush, “We have all these stories of heroic wardens conquering the Blight and dashing champions protecting their city, and I thought, yeah, Rook's just as great as the Champion of Kirkwall, she should get her own story too. The Hero who fought two gods and, against all odds, saved the day with the help of her friends.”

“And don’t forget this knife we found,” Rook joked, but she felt her heart squeeze hard in her chest.

Bellara laughed. “So, yeah, that's what I did. Well, am trying to do. I'm kinda writing as we go along.” Her fingers tightened around the notebook, almost nervous. “Am I being weird? Please don't say it's weird.”

Before she could think, Rook wrapped her arms around Bellara's shoulders, embracing her friend tightly. “Bel, that is the nicest thing anyone has said to me. Ever.”

Rook didn't set out to be a hero, she didn't imagine herself in the shoes of the Hero of Ferelden or the Champion or the Inquisitor. When the War of the Banners started, she did what she thought was right: stop the fighting before it got worse and ruined the people she imagined to be her family. In return, she was exiled.

Well, exile was a strong word. She wasn't technically, formally exiled — but it certainly felt like it. Peers and professors alike, people she looked up to, scorning her for her actions, her idiocy, and blaming her for the consequences of the nobility being put off. Even the most sympathetic of the Watch who quietly agreed with her had gently suggested she travel until heads cooled off.

Rook had never felt less like a Mourn Watcher.

Stargate Episode Review: Bloodlines

Time to fill in some of Teal'c's back story! Huzzah!

So we find out that Teal'c left behind a wife and son on Chulak, and the conversation where Teal'c reveals this to Jack is just *chef's kiss*. You can hear a little bit of anger in Jack's voice when he says to Teal'c "you swore that you had no ties to Chulak", but you can tell it's more so out of fear of what the higher ups will do when they find out than any anger that Teal'c lied to Jack. Because Jack gets it - revealing a family would have made the military command less likely to trust Teal'c, he even says as much to General Hammond. He even makes a point to call Teal'c "my friend" during this conversation, just a small, simple way of telling Teal'c "hey, nothing has changed between us, I'm here for you."

And it's not just Jack, but all of SG-1 rally behind Teal'c when they find out. The scene where they try to sell a return mission to Chulak to Hammond without telling him the real reason why just solidifies what they would do for their friend. And while Hammond tries to stick by "the rules", trying to insist Teal'c may be compromised, when faced with a determined Teal'c who tries to head home by himself, Hammond can't help but let his heart overrule protocol. Instead, he insists that no, if you go alone, you'll die, which is why your team is going with you. The pure look of shock on Tealc's face when Hammond told him this leads you to believe he really thought deep down he would have to fight this battle alone - I'm sure his respect for General Hammond ratcheted up even more after that.

This episode also introduces one of the most important recurring characters of the series - Teal'c's former master, Bra'tac. Hands down, one of my favourite recurring characters. While his initial meeting with SG-1 wasn't exactly smooth sailing, a short test of worth had him smiling in approval at his former pupils' new companions. The little tug-of-war between he and Jack is fun, with Jack used to being in command while Bra'tac expects his commands to be obeyed (which Jack concedes to - this is Bra'tac's domain, he knows the land and what to expect). Much like with Teal'c, Jack (and the rest of SG-1) very quickly trust Bra'tac, which is another example of their absolute trust in Teal'c - any friend of Teal'c's is a friend of theirs.

Before now, the Jaffa were really just seen as Apophis's army, whereas this episode really hammers home that they are also slaves. When they find Teal'c's son, Rya'c, the poor kid is dying of Scarlet Fever, so his mother had arranged for him to be implanted with Goa'uld larvae and become a true Jaffa (the whole reason Teal'c came back, to try and prevent this from happening). As Jack states, on Earth this is a curable disease, but here the only option for survival is to accept a Goa'uld, and once implanted, they become that Jaffa's immune system and are stuck with them for life (the beginning of the episide shows Janet testing a drug on Teal'c to try and replace Junior, but that ultimately fails). Sure, they gain advanced strength and healing abilities and a longer life span, but they are forever bound to them, for without a larvae, they quickly die.

We get another glimpse of Daniel's dark side in this episode. His pure hatred for the Goa'uld shows through when he decides to shoot a tank holding infant Goa'uld, killing them. As Sam points out, killing them while they're this helpless makes them no better than they are, and I can kind of see her point. Yes, they are the enemy, but the fact that they are snake like creatures makes you forget that what Daniel did was the equivalent of murdering CHILDREN. (Although later in the series, we discover that all Goa'uld are born with a genetic memory, so you could argue that they are basically "born" as adults, but Daniel didn't know this, so it's still a morally dark place for him to go.) The fact that moments later, we see Daniel casually snacking and chatting like nothing had happened also makes what he did seem that little bit darker - like taking those lives didn't affect him at all.

I don't quite get why Tealc's wife and son don't come with them at the end - they were going to when Rya'c was dying, but as soon as he starts getting better, it's like ok, just stay? They weren't getting slowed down any further (in fact, with Rya'c recovered, they could have picked up the pace), and there was always the danger that someone on Chulak picks up on their betrayal if left behind. I mean, I know why the writer's did it - they don't want Teal'c's adventures bogged down by a wife and son - but it seems like they could have found a better written way to do it.

The final scene is awesome, though - Bra'tac gets to show off that even at 133, he's still got it, easily dispatching the guards at the gate with an impressive display. And, as SG-1 prepares to leave, Jack shows a mark of respect for this great warrior/new friend by having he and Sam stand at attention. Until we neet again Bra'tac!
