Being sick is terrible, isn’t it? From the second you felt the first threads of the cold start to clog your throat and nose, you knew it was all over. Mentally, you signed your death certificate: Y/N L/N, passed away today, gone from the most horrific cough known to man. That’s how it felt, at least, yet you’re still expected to get up and act as if nothing was the matter. Those kids with tuberculosis in the Victorian age who got to lie around in bed all day while their parents treated them like royalty didn’t know how good they had it.

Thankfully, you have at least a couple of days to feel better before you really have to be productive. You started feeling poorly on a Friday, barely managing to stumble through class before heading home as quickly as you could. Not wanting to complain and spoil the good mood of everyone excited about their weekend plans, you had tried to tell as few people as possible. Specifically, you hadn’t told your boyfriend, Thomas, but now you’re missing him more than ever.

It’s not like you’re intentionally trying to keep things from him, you just don’t want him giving up whatever fun things he was supposed to do this weekend so he could hover over you. You love your boyfriend more than anything, honestly, but when it took you so long to admit your feelings for him because you were certain he would never like you back, small things like this make it even easier to talk yourself out of thinking he’ll want to know about it. Thomas is the varsity cross country athlete, the popular one. He loves you, and he’ll tell you that as many times as it takes so you believe it, but some part of you will always wonder why.

That’s why you haven’t told him, not yet, although you have a feeling that he’ll find out sooner or later. Your adoptive sister, Brenda, is best friends with Thomas’ twin, Teresa, and they trade gossip like no one you’ve ever seen before. Both of them have repeatedly assured you that Thomas is head over heels for you, but what if he’s not quite infatuated enough to want to drop his weekend plans to take care of an invalid?

As the cold progresses, though, you start to wish that you had bothered him anyway. You’ve shut yourself up in your bedroom with all the lights off, just lying there and reminiscing about the golden days when your nose had worked as it was supposed to. You had taken so much for granted, and now you’re afflicted with a truly terrible fate indeed.

You’re miserable even on a Saturday, which is how you know things have truly taken a turn for the worst. Not even the weekend, the blessed release from work, can lift your spirits. Your best friend Newt was the only one who knew that you were going through it, and he’d made you promise to call him the second you started feeling better so he could plan a friend group movie night or something. Newt’s always the one on top of stuff like that. You doubt any of you could accomplish anything without his work behind the scenes to keep you all organized. He holds all of you together and keeps anyone from straying too far.

You had hoped that Newt would forget that you were feeling down, but it’s half past noon when your phone buzzes with an incoming call from the blond boy. You briefly consider just letting it go to voicemail, but that would alarm him even more than if you admitted that you still aren’t feeling your best.

You end up giving yourself a second or two to put on your best fake smile before answering the call. Thankfully, Newt had elected to go for just a talk over the phone instead of FaceTime, so you only have to disguise your voice and not your expression, too.

Newt’s voice rings over your phone. “What’s up, Y/N? How’re you doing today?”

You’ve never planned on a career as an actress, but when you answer Newt as happily as you can, you start to consider it. You sound chipper and excited, surprising even yourself. “Doing fine, Newt. How about yourself?”

Maybe this is actually doable. Maybe you might be able to convince your friend that you’re fine so he doesn’t do something terrible like try to get involved. Right now, you just want to be left alone to wallow in your dark room until you’re physically forced out of it.

Newt clicks his tongue in disapproval, sending a rush of static crackling over the phone. “Y/N, are you being honest with me?”

You start to sputter in surprise. Hadn’t your ruse been perfect? “What? Of course I am!”

Newt lets out a sarcastic laugh. “Sure thing. We’ve been friends for years, I know when you’re lying. You want to let me know how you’re really feeling?”

“Really, I’m great,” you eke out. “You’re being paranoid, Newt.”

“Am I?” He asks.

“No,” you admit. “I’m still miserable. My head is killing me, and I haven’t left my bed for more than a couple of minutes all day.”

Newt sighs. “That’s what I was worried about. Is there anything I can do? Maybe rally the group to swing by your house to cheer you up?”

“No, honestly. I don’t want to do anything. Hopefully I’ll get better soon, but until then, I don’t want any crowds around.” You tell him.

Newt pauses for a moment, thinking, then asks, “What about just one person?”

You frown. “Are you offering? I thought you were busy all day.”

“I am,” Newt clarifies, “But Thomas isn’t.”

You go silent. Newt, always the perceptive one, sighs again. “You haven’t told him that you’ve been feeling under the weather, have you?”

“No,” you admit, “but I didn’t want to bother him, that’s all. There’s nothing Thomas can do about this. I don’t want him to worry about something out of his control. He’s already got enough on his plate already, you know that as well as I do.”

Although this conversation is happening over the phone, you can picture Newt’s look of disappointed consternation anyway. “No, he would be furious with me if you were sick and I didn’t tell him. I’m letting him know immediately.”

“Newt, don’t you dare,” you admonish.

He just chuckles. “Too late. Texting him now. With any luck he’ll be over within the hour.”

“You’ve betrayed my trust. You’re a terrible friend,” you admonish him, but only half heartedly.

Newt laughs openly. “No, I’m a fantastic friend and you know it. Did I not use everything in me to get the two of you together?”

You giggle in spite of yourself. “You did indeed. I remember you bringing that up many times.”

“As I deserve,” Newt grumbles. “The two of you fought me all the way despite supposedly wanting this. He had better make you happy now, I’m not ruining all of my hard work for a bad cold.”

You smile. “Thanks, Newt. I’m very glad that you suffered so much for us.”

“You had better be,” he says, but he’s laughing when he hangs up.

Seconds later, you get a text from Thomas: On my way ASAP. Might be breaking the speed limit.

You grin and text him back. Don’t get pulled over.

Never, he answers, and he’s true to his word, a knock sounding on your front door about five minutes later. The rest of your family is out of the house, so you have no problems creeping down the hall to unlock the door and let him in.

Thomas swoops in immediately, pressing a kiss to the top of your head before pulling away so he can get a good look at you. “How are you feeling, Y/N? Dizzy? Feverish? You look alright, if a little tired, but let’s get you back in bed at once.”

You laugh. “I’m not dying of the plague, Thomas. I’ll survive standing up for a few more seconds.”

“Yeah, but you shouldn’t have to,” he says. Pausing briefly to leave his shoes at the door, Thomas proves his point by picking you up in bridal style and carrying you back to your room despite your protests, which are admittedly pretty halfhearted.

Once Thomas has gotten you back in bed again, found a glass somewhere to bring you water, insisted on watching you drink all of it, run back downstairs so he could fill it again, and returned, he perches on the side of your bed, gently squeezing your hand.

“Well, Doctor Thomas?” You ask teasingly. “What’s your diagnosis?”

He grins and plays along. “Not terrible. I recommend bed rest, and maybe also letting your boyfriend know when he needs to take care of you.”

This last bit is delivered with increasing passion, and you’re left sheepishly smiling at him. “Alright, maybe I should have told you in the first place, but I just didn’t want you to worry.”

“Worrying is my job,” Thomas says, “I am excellent at it. Also, if I think you’re not telling me when you need extra love, I’ll worry even more than usual. The only way to keep me from worrying is to let me know when you’re sick or hurt. Deal?”

“Deal,” you agree, and smile when he kisses your cheek.

“You should get some rest,” Thomas urges you. “Here, I’ll close the door so the noise from downstairs doesn’t bother you.”

He moves to stand, but you reach for his hand and he freezes at once. “Stay with me?” You ask hopefully.

“Of course,” he smiles, and, careful not to disturb you, climbs into bed next to you, lying down on top of your blankets to keep his street clothes off of the mattress. You curl into him, letting your eyes shut as the steady beat of his heart lulls you to sleep. Once you wake up, you’ll feel better, and be more open to conversation, but for now, both of you are quite content with the silence. Peace is good for both of you.

The Augurey in Harry Potter: Origins, Symbolism, and Role in Wizarding History

Among the many magical creatures introduced in the Harry Potter universe, few are as misunderstood—or as melodramatic—as the Augurey. Also known as the Irish Phoenix, this peculiar bird is far from fiery or flamboyant. Instead, it cuts a thin, gloomy figure, resembling a small, underfed vulture with greenish-black feathers and a sharp, sorrowful cry.

A Shy Bird with a Bad Reputation

Native to Great Britain and Ireland, the Augurey is intensely shy, preferring to nest alone in thorny brambles. Its tear-shaped nest is often hidden deep in the undergrowth. It survives on a diet of insects, flies, and even fairies, which it hunts during heavy rain.

The Augurey’s mournful cry has long carried an ominous reputation. In wizarding folklore, it was once believed that its cry foretold death. This superstition caused many wizards to go to great lengths to avoid Augurey nests. But in 1824, magical researcher Gulliver Pokeby put those fears to rest with his book Why I Didn’t Die When the Augurey Cried. He revealed the truth: the Augurey simply sings when rain is on the way. Rather than a death omen, it’s a magical weather report.

From Myth to Meteorologist

Once the myth was dispelled, Augureys were sometimes used as magical weather forecasters. However, their constant moaning during rainy seasons—especially in wetter regions—made them less than ideal pets. While their feathers are striking, they repel ink and are therefore useless for writing. That said, the legendary Quill of Acceptance at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is believed to be made from an Augurey feather.

Love in the Rain

The Augurey’s courtship rituals are surprisingly complex, peaking around Valentine’s Day each year. Sadly, Augureys raised in captivity often struggle to find mates if released, having never learned these intricate social behaviors. Their shy and melancholic nature doesn’t make matchmaking any easier.

Famous (and Infamous) Augurey Moments

Over the years, the Augurey has popped up in several curious moments in wizarding history:

Uric the Oddball, a notoriously eccentric wizard, once kept 50 Augureys as pets. On a particularly rainy day, they all cried in unison—leading Uric to believe he was a ghost. He promptly gave himself a concussion trying to walk through a wall.

In 1927, Newt Scamander—the famed Magizoologist—had a pet Augurey named Patrick, who lived among other magical creatures in his enchanted suitcase.

Hans, an oversized and gloomy Augurey, became the mascot of the Liechtenstein National Quidditch Team, even gaining a fan club.

Most hauntingly, Delphini, the daughter of Voldemort, grew up with an Augurey and later adopted it as her personal symbol. She had a tattoo of one on the back of her neck, and in an alternate timeline where Voldemort won, she took on the name “The Augurey.”

What’s in a Name?

The name “Augurey” cleverly plays on augury, the ancient Roman practice of interpreting omens by observing birds. Given that the Augurey’s cry was once thought to predict death (and now rain), the term is fitting. Some even suggest the "-ey" suffix hints at "grey"—a color symbolic of sadness, clouds, and rain. Very on-brand for such a moody little bird.

So, while the Augurey may not be the most glamorous creature in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, it certainly leaves an impression. Equal parts misunderstood, mystical, and moody, the Augurey reminds us that not every ominous sound is a bad omen—sometimes, it’s just time to grab your umbrella.

I promise I don't mean to insult you or any ill intent, but I read your post about Colin being Penelope's prize and just wanted to say that the moment I saw the S3 plot, I thought it would be a Regency retelling of your fic dress (which I adore and read daily) 🙈 🙈 I know that when Nicola speaks about Polin it might seem that way, but Luke's interviews have me hopeful for good Colin development, and if it's even half like a Regency version of your story I'll be THRILLED. I hope the season leaves us happy :)

Follow up - I know the plot of dress isn't Pen needing lessons to find suitors but anyway okay maybe you're right and my hope for S3 was wistful thinking 🥺 🙈

Now listen - the moment the plot summary was revealed for S3, I kept saying to myself... wait, this is regency Dress! So yes, I do want that to happen really badly.

My problem is, after two seasons of this show, I know what they prioritize and how they tend to structure their writing, and it doesn't align with what I prefer and would like to see. And that's fine, the show has a different tone and purpose and narration that they want to tell. I'm pretty sure it'll be a decent season of television, casuals will eat it up, and I'll have a good time turning off my brain and watch Nicola and Newts kill it.

But I won't love Colin and Penelope in the show as much as their characters in the books (they're already so different and while they have potential to be absolutely excellent, I don't think they will reach that potential for me... especially since it'll require retconning a lot of Colin - or at least providing sneaky flashbacks of him actually being a matchmaker - and a more character-driven arc for Penelope that the show would never do because they are plot-driven). I do think I'll enjoy the show! I just have a gut feeling that Colin's development won't reach nearly the depth of the books (because if they actually kept the jealousy of Pen's legacy plot I would SCREAM in excitement but I doubt it) because again, the show prioritizes scandal and plot - and all of that means focusing on Colin groveling and Penelope being LW.

Having said all of this - I try to keep my expectations very low because both S1 and S2 disappointed me in regards to Penelope/Colin and them as individuals, so it's hard for me to have hope (except when Nic and Newts talk... they're what's keeping me here). But I would LOVE to be wrong and absolutely love everything about S3 and its direction and the depth and care of the arcs presented. But I've accepted that my Modern AU fic is probably gonna be WAY more in character than the show's out-of-character fanfic that emphasizes groveling, spice, and scandal over the growth and imperfections of the book.

But if S3 really is just regency "Dress" I expect royalties.

Severus

Severus is short. Poor childhood nutrition and stress put paid to him resembling his father. Also genetics. He takes after his mother a great deal.

Sirius

When Sirius is grieving or mired in strong negative emotion his animagus form is that of a Grim. When he’s happy and healthy his animagus form is still the size of a Grim but looks like a black Samoyed.

Yes, this is absolutely so Harry can go "Look at those EARS!" and smoosh his face into Padfoot's fur.

Narcissa

Narcissa is an incurable meddler. Given that she is In Society, she’s often bored to tears. Meddling in other people’s affairs gives her life. She absolutely read Emma and missed the whole point of the book.

3. Obscure headcanon

Severus

Severus’ paternal grandmother was On The Stage from the 1920s through the 1930s. Severus learned a wide repertoire of songs from her and pulls them out every time Narcissa tries to get him to sing at one of her musical evenings.

Narcissa now knows the opening chords for every filthy song from the 1920s.

Sirius

Sirius never quite got the hang of non-magical clothing. He wore jeans because he knew it would annoy his mother, but they never felt…right. Also knit boxer shorts in the summer are a hell he never wants to experience again. He never realized one could feel quite so…soggy.

Narcissa

She had a great deal of difficulty conceiving Draco and was ill for a long time after his birth. She’s convinced that without Severus’ intervention with potions she wouldn’t have a child at all.

12. Crack headcanon

Severus

Promising NEWT Potions students get to learn Severus’ more…illicit brews.

Sirius

Sirius has never been able to get rid of the dog breath after the first animagus transformation. Mr. Potter even tried to invent something. It became incredibly popular as oven cleaner.

Narcissa

Narcissa has never once told Draco the truth regarding childbirth. He went to Hogwarts convinced that babies of the Black family were brought to expecting parents in a chariot of stars.

She feels no remorse.

24. Most annoying habit

Severus

Stuffs used handkerchiefs in his robe sleeves during cold and flu season. He also leaves trails of books marked with bits if parchment all over his quarters.

Sirius

He thinks puns are the height of humor. He also likes to show off how many languages he speaks sometimes and will use a language no one else understands.

Narcissa

She files her nails manually with a metal nail file and hums in a high-pitched drone while she does it.

47. Their dream job

Severus

Researcher. Bliss. No students, no questions, and no being careful not to blow the roof off the building. Also he gets to go to conventions and argue with other people. Oh, and he can send scathing articles in to the journals and not have to worry he's insulting someone's second cousin twice removed.

Sirius

Extra-posh dilettante. He could dabble to his heart’s content, go to society events, and annoy Narcissa and Lucius to screaming point.

Narcissa

Matchmaker. She’d get to meddle as much as she liked and pair people off.

Hotel California Au: Thomas hasn't heard from his older sister (Teresa) in six years when he randomly recieves a letter from her inviting him to the grand re-opening of her new hotel! Ships: Newtmas

Aesthetic Summer Au: found a random list that claimed the key to having a perfect summer, litterally just Newt (ocasionally followed by Thomas, Minho, or Sonya) completing my favourites from the list. Ships: Newtmas (maybe even Thominewt)

“I can't believe you.” James crosses his arms over his chest as he leans into the doorframe of the bedroom, a teasing grin on his lips. “Here I am, doing all the hard work, and you can't even wait for me?” Lily laughs a little breathlessly, which is probably due to Sirius' lips currently brushing along her skin, travelling lower towards the waistband of her knickers. “Maybe you shouldn't have taken so long, darling.” “Oh, I'm very sorry I couldn't wrestle our two-year-old son into bed any faster,” James says amused, watching as Sirius hooks his fingertips into the lace of Lily's underwear and pulls it down her legs.

Eight-year-old Harry has bad luck with his chocolate frog cards. Why are his parents on there all the time when chocolate frog cards are supposed to be for interesting people? Totally unfair. His friends don't help either.

Don't worry about it.” Lily waves a hand for him to sit back down when they reach the table. “How are you two?” she asks with a smile. And casually sits down in Sirius' lap. Peter and Remus stare. “Um... okay...” Remus says slowly.

I didn't manage to clear the whole board (that was probably a bit too high of a goal 😂) but I had fun!

Sure! I wrote almost the whole damn thing in 2019 based on a cute prompt where Anathema gets a final prophecy to play matchmaker for demon and angel.

The reason it never got posted is that it’s missing a chunk in the third act that I never got around to writing 😅🙃

“Newt and I were thinking of taking a vacation together now that things have calmed down. Somewhere romantic,” she announced.

“We were?” Newt’s head jerked up from his plate.

She kicked his shin lightly and he slapped his forehead with one hand.

“Oh, right! Sorry darling, I’d, um, nearly forgotten that plan.”

Subtle as a brick to the head, that man of hers. God, she loved him. She patted his arm.

“Yes, so. Seems you two have done some traveling - any recommendations?”

Crowley looked at her directly for possibly the first time all evening. She met his gaze as best she could behind those dark glasses. He raised one eyebrow. “Atlantis was quite nice,” he drawled.

Are conures generally ok with other birds or was newt just really well socialized? I own a GCC and she’ll be my only bird until I graduate college. She’s only a six month old baby, but it’ll be another two years before I can get her a friend which I want to do when I can. Will her being an only bird for the next couple of years make that hard? She did grow up with all her siblings until she was weaned and ready to go home, so she at least has that experience with them.

Conure is a very broad term, in general pyrrhura conures tend to be quite social. Most species live in large flocks and some can be seen socializing with different species of birds with low conflict.

I don’t know much about Newt’s actual upbringing, in his previous home he wasn’t well socialized but his actual raising I know nothing about. He was a solitary bird for at least a year before he came to us.

Newts species, maroon bellied conure, is known for being pretty friendly and sociable with both people and a variety of birds. His sociability is largely fuelled by those genetics.

Captive parrots in general tend to lack social skills, many aren’t parent reared and get separated from their flock at a very young age which prevents them from learning critical social skills. Even when wild counterparts may socialize with with other birds the lack of social learning they get in captivity greatly affects their sociability. As a result even if a bird does really want to engage with another bird they may end up in a lot of fights, tension, and conflict purely because they don’t know how to communicate well. Most captive birds need to be taught how to socialize and communicate clearly in order for them to successfully get along with another bird.

In captivity you also have the issues of space and choice, they don’t get to pick their friends and they’re limited on how they can escape and move away from the new bird. Not every bird gets along with every bird they meet and with reduce space it makes conflicts more likely to happen.

All in all there’s a lot of factors that can influence sociability, and a lot of work that goes in to a successful birdly friendship. Them spending a lot of time alone can definitely make that process slower and more difficult but not necessarily impossible. Their individual personality, your matchmaking skills, development and genetics will all play a big role in whether or not they as an individual want to socialize with other birds.
