Are conures generally ok with other birds or was newt just really well socialized? I own a GCC and she’ll be my only bird until I graduate college. She’s only a six month old baby, but it’ll be another two years before I can get her a friend which I want to do when I can. Will her being an only bird for the next couple of years make that hard? She did grow up with all her siblings until she was weaned and ready to go home, so she at least has that experience with them.

Conure is a very broad term, in general pyrrhura conures tend to be quite social. Most species live in large flocks and some can be seen socializing with different species of birds with low conflict.

I don’t know much about Newt’s actual upbringing, in his previous home he wasn’t well socialized but his actual raising I know nothing about. He was a solitary bird for at least a year before he came to us.

Newts species, maroon bellied conure, is known for being pretty friendly and sociable with both people and a variety of birds. His sociability is largely fuelled by those genetics.

Captive parrots in general tend to lack social skills, many aren’t parent reared and get separated from their flock at a very young age which prevents them from learning critical social skills. Even when wild counterparts may socialize with with other birds the lack of social learning they get in captivity greatly affects their sociability. As a result even if a bird does really want to engage with another bird they may end up in a lot of fights, tension, and conflict purely because they don’t know how to communicate well. Most captive birds need to be taught how to socialize and communicate clearly in order for them to successfully get along with another bird.

In captivity you also have the issues of space and choice, they don’t get to pick their friends and they’re limited on how they can escape and move away from the new bird. Not every bird gets along with every bird they meet and with reduce space it makes conflicts more likely to happen.

All in all there’s a lot of factors that can influence sociability, and a lot of work that goes in to a successful birdly friendship. Them spending a lot of time alone can definitely make that process slower and more difficult but not necessarily impossible. Their individual personality, your matchmaking skills, development and genetics will all play a big role in whether or not they as an individual want to socialize with other birds.

Jason Todd never gets picked up by social services when Catherine dies. Instead, the alley protects its own.

Jason had spent most of his daytime hours looking after his neighbors kids. He was basically family. They paid him in meals and a shared bed when Willis would kick him out sometimes.

When people hear his Mom died, he couch surfs amongst families with small children that need supervision while their parents are at work. He manages well enough, and he rotates what families he stays with so CPS never catches wind. He’s the alley’s secret amongst working immigrant families.

It also means he knows how to deal with kids.

So when he watches one tumble off a fire escape on the roof opposite where he’s been smoking, he knows he has to check it out. Make sure the kid’s alright.

When he finally gets a good look at him, both his camera and leg are busted.

More convoluted take below the cut!

Tim, who broke his leg actually, is too little to be taking care of himself or get himself home. He needs to be looked after.

He gets the kid to Leslie, lies and says he’s watching him over the weekend and the kids parents will be back Monday, and gets the kid in a cab before figuring out where he lives.

Tim isn’t super aware of what’s going on around him since he was given something for the pain, but he knows there’s someone asking him a lot of questions. When he is more awake, the following morning after waking up on his living room couch, he realizes there’s a kid watching him.

Tim feels like hell and while he appreciates Jason taking him home, he can handle himself.

Jason snorts at him, asks if he’s ever had a broken leg or knows how to use crutches, and what he wants for breakfast.

It takes two days before Tim is willing to admit his parents won’t be home for a few months. They’re lucky school’s out or someone would have noticed Tim’s absence.

Jason becomes Tim’s babysitter, or as much of one as he can be without Tim’s parents finding out. Jason takes care of him the whole time his leg is healing. Tim teaches him to play videogames and Jason reads to him.

When Tim’s finally healed, he wants to go back out at night to chase after Batman. Jason gives him an unimpressed look, but asks if the kid wants to tag along to his babysitting gigs in the alley. He misses some of the little twerps and thinks there’s a few Tim would like.

Tim and Jason become brothers early, going from apartment to apartment looking after other people’s kids. Jason gets someone who follows him around, gives him shit, and is almost as good as wikipedia in a pinch. Tim gets someone who gives a shit about him, a social life full of people who aren’t snotty high society brats, and Jason’s special brand of aggressive caring.

What the two don’t know is that Two Face has been looking for Jason’s dad. No one had been able to rat him out when he was staying with Tim because no one knew where he was.

It takes a while, but when the wrong people figure out where Jason is, it isn’t pretty.

They interrupt him while sitting an overnighter. There’s a loud knock at the door and when Jason checks the peephole, it’s two of his Dad’s old buddies. Jason rounds up the kids, yells “just a minute!”, gives Tim a kitchen knife and tells him to sit tight and lock themselves in one of the bedrooms. Tim doesn’t hear anything after the front door opening and an initial shout. He waits 15 minutes before he’s sure the coast is clear. Then, he rounds the kids up, puts them to bed like Jason does, and heads up to the roof.

He knows Batman’s patrol routes well enough to find him and try to flag him down. Who he actually gets is Robin, who he has to explain to that Two Face took his brother. When Robin finally listens and takes the kid seriously, he radios Batman. Batman, who recognizes the neighbor kid and knows he doesn’t have a brother. By this point Tim is almost in tears of frustration trying to explain that Jason Todd is his brother but Batman also recognizes the missing kid from one of his reports and it’s enough of a corroboration that Tim gets put in the back of the Batmobile while they go to rescue Jason.

He doesn’t get to see any of the fighting and he doesn’t leave the car, but when Robin is half carrying Jason out of the building, Tim leaps out of the car to hug his brother. Jason’s got a few bruised ribs and his face is beat to hell, but it’s all something Leslie can fix.

What Leslie can’t fix is the legal fact that Jason is a missing kid, not Tim’s biological brother. Batman sits with the two, explaining how everything is going to work once they take them to the police.

Three things happen at once:

1. Jason accuses Batman of dropping kids off with traffickers. It’s why he didn’t let CPS pick him up when his Mom died.

2. Robin asks if the two will get to stay together, if they can ask Gordon not to separate them.

3. Tim says they will be doing no such thing, Mr. Wayne.

last night's whole stream was great but underrated bit is finding out that lando called max earlier that day and woke him up from a nap because he was in a restaurant for lunch and wanted to ask what he should order

that's actually so domestic like that makes the mclaren mental health video he did even cuter because he says he calls his friends and he always feels better. And we've literally also seen him call Max while Max is on stream to tell him about golf or to tell him about what he's doing it's SO unbearably cute and weirdly intimate.

omg i love your idea for the duke and dick dynamic, it could be so fun if handled properly, i wish dc would release a team-up for them where they start off with the one-sided hate-ish dynamic you described. i'm primarily a nightwing fan but i adore duke and something about them starting off on such a wrong foot makes my brain itch, the banter would be comedy gold. they team up for a case that involves undercover work and some classic corrupt officials in a powerful system. the rooftop should come up and dick should apologize for handling it all wrong and they would talk about the systemic issues in brief all over throughout the comic (maybe use the newly orphaned dick in juvie reference at some point, could lead to very interesting introspection on dick's part) and let them chafe a little together because they are both used to being in leader/solo roles and then let them find even more respect for each other and their skills. i think dick would like duke even more by the end and they both would gain a better understanding of each other. duke doesn't even need to like dick by the end of it. it would be SO fun. DC PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN, LET DUKE BE PETTY AND A HATER AND LET IT BE FUNNY

Sorry you've turned on the Dick + Duke tap in my head so gonna dump some thoughts here:

The thing about Dick + Duke is that they're sooo similar but SOOO different. Like technically they've both been wards/taken in not as a son for Bruce, but Dick's situation was so radically different that even if they talked about it, it wouldn't be the same. Dick would be like 'how did you feel being taken in by Bruce' and Duke would be like 'nothing really. I mean it was nice but it was only temporary. What was it like for you' and Dick would suppress 1 bajillion of the world's strongest feelings about Bruce to be like 'oh it was nice as well'.

ALSO thinking about how the roof thing happened when Dick gave Duke his blessing to be Robin, but now Duke is Signal. I don't think Dick knows 'Signal' comes from Duke's mom, and Duke certainly doesn't know 'Robin' comes from Dick's mom. Imagining a conversation where they discuss those names, and the uncomfortable realisation of what exactly it meant when Duke + the WAR kids took Robin out of its context, but also the realisation that Signal is a Robin legacy in its own way by honouring motherhood. Also, thinking about Duke telling Dick about Bruce giving him the Signal suit and basically asking him to stop being Robin. Dick had picked Duke in Robin War, I can't imagine Bruce's interference with the Robin mantle would go over well (and it shouldn't. I just need someone to be mad about the Robin/Signal transition in canon!!!)

Final thought is their opposing thoughts about performance and honesty. Performance is such an integral part of Dick's core, but it's antithetical to Duke's; he's all about truth, bringing things to light, digging things up etc. I think them teaming up could bring out these completely different approaches to being a hero and being human, and it would be so delicious and good!!! I truly do think at the end of it they would come to have a deep respect for each other, because they are both deeply good people who believe in community and compassion. I even think the leader thing won't be hard for them to overcome (Dick would not treat Duke as a sidekick and Duke would appreciate that; they're both very aware of the importance of youth's independence).

This is just some of the stuff DC is leaving on the table by NOT FLESHING THEIR RELATIONSHIP OUT. For now I just have 3 panels in Robin War to obsess over :((. If they ever do a Duke-Dick special or run I will buy every issue and every variant cover and cry on the floor for an hour maybe because I'll be SO HAPPY!!!
