Matthew 1:12
And during the captivity of Babulōn Iechonias begat Salathiēl, and Salathiēl begat Zorobabel,
Notes:
For more on the translation of Ī¼ĪµĻ„ĪæĪ¹ĪŗĪµĻƒĪÆĪ± ("captivity") and Ἰεχονίας, see notes to Matthew 1:11.
~~~
For more on the translation of ἐγέννησεν ("begat") and the use of the definite article with names, see notes to Matthew 1:2.
~~~
Σαλαθιήλ, transliterated here Salathiēl (Shealtiel), appears in the Old Testament as the son and successor of Jeconiah, forced into captivity in Babylon along with the rest of his family. For his biography, see 1 Chronicles 3:17.
~~~
Ζοροβαβέλ, transliterated here Zorobabel (Zerubbabel), appears in the Old Testament as a grandson of Jeconiah. He is a son of Shealtiel in Ezra 3:2-8;5:2, Nehemiah 12:1, and Haggai 1:1-14;2:2-23, but a son of Pedaiah, Sheatiel's brother, in 1 Chronicles 3:17-19. He led the captured Jews back from Babylon to Jersusalem, and laid the foundation for the Second Temple. For the story, see Ezra passim.
hello!!! i recently watched 12 Angry Men, the movie that episode 4 was named after (spoilers ahead for both Yellowjackets and 12 Angry Men, so beware), and I’ve come up with a list of comparisons between characters. I didn’t get all twelve, and not all of them fit (especially in verdict), but I think I did an alright job.
***
Juror #1, or the Foreman, is Natalie. He is seen to be a reluctant leader when put under social scorn and threatens to give up his position early on, mimicking when Nat regarded her getting involved in the Mari/Shauna beef as pointless and forcing her to be the camp counselor in it all. The Foreman does shut up and gives little opinion in the trial, like Natalie does, but votes innocent about halfway through.
Juror #2 is Gen, and this might be a bit mean but I’ve put her as him because #2 is a bit of a coward. He’s solid in his opinion of ā€œnot guiltyā€ but speaks quite trembly and always fails to offer a strong rebute whenever someone insults him. Gen switching her position on command was similarly cowardly, so she’s here now. All respect to both of them though, this isn’t my strongest comparison.
Juror #3, the last holdout, is 100% Shauna. Not only is he the angriest of the jury and the least impartial, he blames the accused for his own terrible relationship with his son, mirroring how Shauna blames Ben in part for her child not making it past birth. He is angry, yelling, constantly throwing questions like ā€œwhat’s the matter with you all?ā€ to the rest of the jury, believing them to have gone mad by switching their votes to not guilty. He’s confident in his verdict until the last minute. He makes decision on emotion, not logic. Very Shauna.
Juror #4 is our very own Taissa Turner, similar in position to Shauna but very different in method. Juror #4 is calculated and is incredibly thorough with his arguments. He destroys arguments until there is nothing to stand on. Interestingly, he switches his vote to not guilty once convinced through ā€œreasonable doubtā€, and Tai’s glance to Van in the vote of episode 4 made it look like she was confused that Van was voting guilty, because she, at this point, believed Ben to be innocent as well.
Juror #5 would have to be Mari. #5 starts out with not much of an argument for the accused’s guilt, much like how Mari’s initial testimony was weak and dismantled without much effort. He relates to the accused boy because they both grew up in the slums, similar to how Mari bonded with Ben in the cave and understood that he hadn’t had any intention of trying to kill her.
Juror #6 has a small part but I’ve given it to Akilah, simply because at some point in the movie he stands up for #9 and I’ve compared #9 to Lottie. Akilah is on Lottie’s side from the beginning of this episode to the end, and ultimately supports her in the final vote.
#7 is Van. Van stays out of the trial for the most part, but #7 is the clear comic relief character in all this, and keeps sending pot shots over #8 (Misty), just like how Van’s one significant line this episode is taunting Misty about her ā€œboyfriendā€. Juror #7 also doesn’t form an opinion based on the facts presented to him. He has other agendas (his baseball game), like Van might have (protecting Tai), so the arguments don’t matter to him in the end.
Juror #8, of course, is the MVP Misty Quigley. She is Ben’s sole defender, builds her argument on fact, detail, and calling out other characters to demand that they compare their experience to the situation, like with Shauna her jealousy of Nat’s leadership, or Juror #4 with his eyeglasses. She also places a heavy emphasis on ā€œreasonable doubtā€, which #8 does as well, as his whole argument is on the point of him not knowing if the accused is guilty, but wanting to dissect the facts deep enough to give the kid a fair trial. Just like Ben.
#9 I’ve given to Lottie, because her behaviour during testimony and her blatant support for Misty’s arguments was similar to how Juror #9 jumped on board with #8 once he had a chance to speak. Lottie has no bad intentions and doesn’t know if Ben set the cabin on fire either, she just wants to hear out all of the sides (Tai, Misty, and the wilderness) before coming to a verdict. Her testimony also proves to be a significant pillar for Misty’s argument, like how #9 was a huge support for #8 once he pulled through.
Juror #10 I’ve tentatively decided is Melissa. #10 is also a very angry man, although not as angry as #3 (Shauna). He’s biased from the start and allows his own prejudices to get in the way of his decision, like how Melissa bases her vote off what Shauna says. His notable argument is about how the rest of the jury keeps focusing on the little details instead of the bigger picture, which reminds me of when Misty drew attention to Melissa during court and Melissa just looked at her like ā€œthe fuck have I got to do with anything??ā€ Once again, not my strongest comparison, Melissa doesn’t have many lines in this episode.
That’s all I have!! The other Yellowjackets, including Travis, didn’t have too much to compare the others to, and both #11 and #12 have pretty defining personalities. If you’ve read this far, I love you and I’ve sworn fealty to you for life. Also, go watch the movie, it’s really fucking good.
So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good,Ā and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
ā€œBut when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes.Ā He asked, ā€˜How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless.
Ā ā€œThen the king told the attendants, ā€˜Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, ā€œLook! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.ā€
3 He answered, ā€œHaven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, ā€˜I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.ā€
9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, ā€œIs it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?ā€
11 He said to them, ā€œIf any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.ā€
13 Then he said to the man, ā€œStretch out your hand.ā€ So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.
God’s Chosen Servant
15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill. 16 He warned them not to tell others about him. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
18 ā€œHere is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory. 21 In his name the nations will put their hope.ā€ — Matthew 12:1-21 | New International Version (NIV) Holy Bible, New International VersionĀ® Anglicized, NIVĀ® Copyright Ā© 1979, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc.Ā® All rights reserved worldwide. We're Good at Condemnation. But Who Is Going to Judge the Judges?
If You think about it, all three ā€œmajorā€ religions are pretty good at condemnation. It seems that we humans like to judge other humans, and we tend to like feeling superior to somebody else. I think it’s interesting, for instance, that Christians are known for being judgmental when in actuality our whole belief system, based on the Bible, should be steeped in love and forgiveness. The Bible does…
1 Corinthians 12:12-26 (NIV). [12] ā€œJust as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. [13] For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. [14] Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. [15] Now if the foot should say, ā€œBecause I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,ā€ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. [16] And if the ear should say, ā€œBecause I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,ā€ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. [17] If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? [18] But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. [19] If they were all one part, where would the body be? [20] As it is, there are many parts, but one body. [21] The eye cannot say to the hand, ā€œI don’t need you!ā€ And the head cannot say to the feet, ā€œI don’t need you!ā€ [22] On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, [23] and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, [24] while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, [25] so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. [26] If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.ā€
Matthew 5:16 (NIV). ā€œIn the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.ā€
ā€œHow to Serve the Body of Christā€ by In Touch Ministries:
ā€œOur kindness to others can start a chain reaction that impacts many for Christ.ā€
ā€œWhen we talk about serving the church with talents and gifts, what comes to mind—a choir singer? Sunday school teacher? The truth is, there are many different ways to use our talents.
Church isn’t a ā€œSunday onlyā€ establishment. It’s not simply a place and time; it is a body of believers, each one gifted by God to guide, help, and support the rest. In fact, service to the Lord doesn’t have to take place within church. It can happen out in the world as well (Matthew 5:16).
The majority of believers aren’t in a position to influence large crowds. When we act or speak, it’s usually only those closest to us who notice, but a chain reaction ripples outward to affect others. Paul’s metaphor of body parts working together is a helpful description of how one small action can have widespread impact (1 Cor. 12:15-21). Consider the way your big toe keeps your foot stable, thereby steadying your whole body. In the same way, a gentle rebuke, a listening ear, or a loving deed benefits the church by strengthening someone, who then supports another …
We are on this earth to serve God’s kingdom and His church. And we do that by ministering to each other in small ways that steady the whole body as we give extra support to one member. This week, look for a need that God can meet through you.ā€
