I have to pick my specialty this year and I am struggling HARD. How did you know what you wanted to specialize in? Or should I just let the NRMP decide and stop stressing?
There’s so much I love about this but first I was selfishly admit that I love that you didn’t assume I was assigned Emergency Medicine as my specialty. I wasn’t. This was my top choice, along with Pediatrics and R&O. So thank you for stroking my well-maintained ego :)
Alright. So there’s a few reasons I chose Emergency Medicine. In sharing these I’ll try to show what made a difference for me and maybe that’ll help you to sort out some thoughts. Mainly though, this is a hugely personal decision/journey…and like you said, only some of it is in your control so I think you should a) have a plan and b) make sure that plan is flexible.
1. I wanted to become a doctor because of pikuach nefesh, or the Jewish belief that saving someone’s life will always take priority. G*d will not be offended if you break Shabbat to save someone’s life - it’s a requirement. Why do *you* want to become a doctor?
2. Being a Jew (I promise I don’t plan for everything to come back to this but I’m a big Jew so for me it often does - sue me) I thought that was the coolest shit. For me, technically, pikuach nefesh also excuses a doctor sometimes needing to work on Shabbat. Listen. I’m the daughter of immigrants and that pressure to be constantly working is a very real thing. At the same time, again - big Jew, so I wanted to make sure I was being as efficient with my life-saving time as possible. It just made sense that my specialty check all of those boxes: aka works with my lifestyle. Is there anything in your life that you think might make one specialty more desirable over another? Sure, we all want to cure cancer but at the end of the day this is a profession and you’ll do your best when the specialty is the right fit.
3. I was a combat medic. In a war zone. I did everything from desk-based vaccination rollouts to pulling soldiers from burning cars and administering aid in dust storms. I thrived in that world. I am very, very cool under pressure. So for me, Emergency Medicine was a no-brainer. One of our other doctors was a nurse in the army and we have that in common. The ED can feel like war - during the pandemic it was war…some days it still feels like it is. There’s also a running joke in my life that I have unreal amounts of energy. I was blessed/work hard to cultivate a clear mind and healthy body…all on very little sleep. There’s also a joke amongst doctors that the staff in the ED are a bunch of fitness freaks with too much energy…we are. We have to be. What’s the thing about you that you can bring to your specialty? What background/trait do you have that makes you unique and desirable in that field?
4. Sometimes picking fields you don’t want is a great place to start. Like OBGYN? I’d rather die. Also wasn’t much for PhysMed or ophthalmology. So that helps too. What specialties can you easily push to the bottom of the list and pray you don’t get matched on?
5. This kind of relates to #3 but I’m mentioning it in a more cynical/realistic way. Like I said, this is a profession. It’s sadly not meant to be our lives. This means that some people choose specialty based on the life they want to have - aka I’m 31 and am not yet married and do not yet have children because (pandemic aside) those things are very difficult for me to do with my current work schedule. That might have been easier if I did choose Pediatrics..or really so many other specialties aside from EM. Is there anything that might hold you back in a specialty? Ie. *what specialty can you die with without resenting it first?* Or, the nicer way of putting it: What specialty can you remain married to? You may dislike it some days, sometimes you’ll want to call it quits, but at the end of the day it’s the best way to spend your life and it helps you be the best doctor you can be - which specialty is that? My aunt (also a doctor) posed this to me once. I thought it was a great way to look at things. And this is 100% how I feel about Emergency Medicine.
Basically:
1. Do what you can but remember that you’ve worked your butt off and now, yes, your hard work is being put into a database with everyone else’s hard work and it may not play out how you planned. And that’s okay! Trust the process! (There’s not much you can do anyway - sorry)
2. You will kill it in any specialty. I’m serious. You’ve done your rotations. You made it through med school! You are so capable to do anything!!
3. Best of luck! Sending all of the good vibes your way! I promise you it will all work out.

I should be revising for my residency. I should be preparing for practical work. I should be training to gain my stamina back to run on no sleep for 24 hour shifts. I should be gathering new textbooks to memorise over and over again. I should keep in touch with the outside world to seek if there are any updates concerning us. But here I am, stressing over it while doing nothing but trying to forget. When time comes for revision, I know I'll be up to it. I know i can finish things in time and be that. But for now, i can't. And i won't. I will not let my surrounding peers pressure me into overworking myself again.

I'm not tumblr fluent enough to know wtf a medblr is, but I do have over 10 years experience as a nephrology nurse, and perhaps my main scope of practice is delivering haemodialysis daily. I had to trawl back through the posts to find the referenced b&w photo.. and then I had a laugh. This person needs to do a lot more research or training, (or meet people who actually have an arteriovenous fistula) or whatever they pretend to do if they're going to offer their "expertise". I suppose Angelina Jolie also has kidney failure? Perhaps all the stacked Marvel Chris's too? Hemsworth obviously needs to come in for his 3 appointments per week, stat!
Like..some people just get enlarged veins..often those who engage in a lot of personal fitness. No need for such a reach lol!
A Mdblr is a person who likes to pretend they're doctors on Tumblr wheb they clearly have no fucking idea what they're thinking about. It explains why you laughed.
Gatorshit has 2 Mdblr : Aeltri, who is an freelance and mostly unemployed medical interpreter who thinks that makes her a medical professional and Murphysmom67, who claims to be a therapist and experienced psychiatric nurse but acts like a psych patient. Every time a *real* medical professional comes to Gatorshit's blog to explain to her why she's wrong, they're automatically declared liars or are simply ignored.

You can major in that?
So I majored in Anthropology. Not physical Anthropology, where I would have at least learned about bones, I majored in the touchy-feely, listen-to-my-story-child Anthropology that brings to mind sitting in a rainforest learning about "lost" cultures. If I was forced to work in a field relevant to my major, I would probably have to spend my life trekking through east Asia interviewing people about labor and gender relations and writing depressing articles about how terrible the patriarchy is.
Tumblr media
I loved it.
I am a huge advocate in studying what you want to study in undergrad, especially if you are pre-med. You're going to spend the rest of your life buried in science and math, it's okay to devote a few years to other stuff!
Tumblr media
But more than that, majoring in Anthropology gave me a perspective on medicine I don't think I would otherwise have. I am much more aware of the societal forces that shape each individual patient, and feel like I'm less judgmental because of it.
Finally, on a more practical note, I talked about Anthropology and how it affects the practice of medicine in both my personal statement and my interview. My interviewer made it a point to tell me that me talking about my experiences in an unusual major pushed them to select me for an interview.
So in conclusion, do you what you love in undergrad! If you're truly dedicated to being a doctor, you'll get there eventually. :)

Protease inhibitors are "-Navir" going to give you up, "-navir" going to let you down, unless the HIV strain acquires enough pol mutations, then you're in trouble.

Is it just me or has Gatorshit completely ignored that first part of that ask? Because that anon is spot on. The Repubicunts have been using the same tactic lately. Accuse everyone who doesn't agree with their bigotry of being pro-pedophile because they can't logically argue their decisions.
As for her answer on the second part, it won't end well for Gatorshit. At some point she's going to have to explain why her Mdblrs were so fucking wrong about everything.

Welcome Post!
Hello! I'm not sure how to start up this blog but I figure that I can't really go wrong with a short introduction to myself. The next post will be about why I decided to start this blog now!
Firstly, I am what you would call a "traditional" medical student. I went to high school, went to college right after, and was accepted to medical school during my senior year. I will be 22 years old when I begin classes.
I am also a first generation immigrant. I was born in another country and immigrated to the US when I was six. I did not speak English when I arrived but my family tells me I adapted quickly and I don't really remember a time when i didn't speak and understand English.
And, I am the first person in my family to attend college and graduate school in the US. My parents both have college degrees from foreign universities, in which they take much pride.
I am furthermore the eldest of three children, love reading and running, have a cat, majored in the Liberal Arts, and have been in a serious relationship for almost two and half years.
If you have questions, I am happy to answer!
Next time: Why Now?
