Experimented with shots of random imagery to demonstrate that suggestive content can be made present from the unlikeliest of objects and scenarios (some less subtle than others).

A sound narrative inspired by Rudy Francisco’s highly known slam poetry entitled, “A Letter to Your New Boyfriend/Scars”.
All recordings and tracks included (apart from Rudy Francisco’s) in this project are original.
Default image is temporarily a screenshot from the film, Casablanca (1943).

Welcome to the world of girls night - It's like drunk history, but with reference to sexuality. The mic was left on to capture our conversations as we shared: thoughts, experiences, drinks, and laughter.
WARNING: our language is not for all ears. We mutter the occasional curse word and discuss entirely sexual subject matter in regards to gender roles and equality.
We just want less judgement and concern; more acceptance and apathy when tackling something as uniquely complex as one’s personal sexuality.

White Space and Size
Tumblr media
This ad for Volkswagen utilizes white space to emulate its message to “think small.” The car advertised here is small in comparison to the vast amount of white space around it. This is done in order to make the reader feel that the car is compact and economical. The words below try to convince the reader to buy the small Volkswagen because it is small and it lists reasons why one would want to buy it, summarized by the last line in the list of reasons, “Think it over.” It should be noted too that the font follows the message of the ad because it is so small. I am not sure how effective the ad is, but it does certainly keep to its message of thinking small.

Audio
“Ready to Stand”
I recorded 100 sounds/conversations/songs/voices on a Zoom H4n audio recorder (WAV files; 48:16).  Out of the 100 sound clips, I used segments from 15 of them in my “Ready to Stand” audio piece.  They include a segment of a conversation between my roommates while they were listening to BBC News on the radio (since they happened to be discussing issues relevant to my audio piece, I did not want to interrupt their conversation by letting them know I was recording and I wanted it to be natural, so I had to record at a distance which impacted the loudness of the clip).  Also included are some segments from interviews by Emma Watson and Davis Guggenheim, speeches by Malala Yousafzai and Viola Davis (I recorded Viola Davis when I attended a luncheon in her honor and met her in person!), and short segments from the two “Like a Girl” commercials that came out this year, a Tracy Anderson workout video, and the 2015 film “Far from the Madding Crowd” starring Carey Mulligan.
The musical tracks in “Ready to Stand” include musicians that I recorded in Union Square, New York City along with the ambient voices and applause in the square.   The track starts off at a distance and gets closer.  I used the entire track in my audio piece as the background/supporting music/drumbeat track.  In addition, on top of that track, I used a short snippet of music from the “Like a Girl” Commercials, Lesley Ann Warren singing “In My Own Little Corner” from Cinderella, a segment from “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid, and a clip of “Little Town” from Beauty and the Beast (just the music, no singing—Karaoke version).
The challenging aspects of this project so far have included selecting, narrowing down, and combining the audio segments I recorded so that every piece of audio included conveys the theme and flows.  Also, while I spent a lot of time adjusting the audio levels on the Timeline in Adobe Premiere using the Pen Tool and making Keyframes, I have yet to explore the more advanced methods of adjusting the EQ and Gain.  Therefore, I need more practice in adjusting the loudness or softness of a clip and making sure that loudness/softness levels remain even throughout.
This assignment has been very valuable in learning about the creative process of taking an idea and then figuring out how to carry it out practically by recording the environment and using the tools and resources available to construct an audio piece out of that raw material that conveys a theme or message.  It shows the power of mixing and recombining different sounds and putting them in a new context to impact a listener in a myriad of ways.

Symmetry, Balance, and Size
Tumblr media
The ad here has symmetry along an axis to the left and right. The purple can is symmetrical to the blue can and the red can serves as the axis line through which we can see the symmetry. As far as size goes, all three cans are identical in size even though the red can (strawberry lemonade) is at the forefront of the picture. This ad is also a good example of compositional balance as the weight on the left balances the weight on the right. The words on the bottom make less of an impact than do the pictures, but the slogan “Sip in good. Give out great” seems to make more of an impact than the small paragraph above it. Essentially, the words below summarize the idea in the paragraph above.
