If you liked HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’, you’ll probably like NOVA’s ‘Building Chernobyl’s Megatomb’. It’s about the construction of this dome that’s placed over the wreckage of the power plant, and the documentary contains a lot of the original footage that’s recreated in the HBO show. It’s on U.S. Netflix, if anyone’s interested.

If you've been watching HBO's Chernobyl and want a story of humans actually getting something right and fixing shit in a collaborative and kind of cool way, please watch this 2017 doc on the 'Megatomb' built by an international team to finally cover and dismantle Reactor 4

Just watched a fine documentary on… a construction project.
“Building Chernobyl’s MegaTomb” (2017) (@pbs) shows how an international team led by French engineers built an arch over the crumbling “sarcophagus” that covers Chernobyl’s reactor 4.
Must-see if you’re interested in the nuclear disaster of 1986, engineering or architecture!
Depressing thought: the site is now occupied by the Russian army that neglects nuclear safety. To think that the arch cost 1.15 billion Euro financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (“EBRD”)!
You can always count on the Russians acting like criminals...

It’s not just “a sarcophagus,” it’s even more impressive than that. In the immediate aftermath, they built a large concrete building around the original facility, to contain any further radioactivity. That was the original sarcophagus. But that was only a temporary measure. Starting in 2010, construction started on what they call the New Safe Confinement structure, because the original sarcophagus was beginning to degrade. The new structure is a massive metal arch that they built off to the side of the facility, because it would have been too dangerous to work at the power plant. The arch is 108 meters tall, 260 meters wide, and 165 meters long, the thing is enormous! Once they finished the arch in 2016, they slid the arch on rails into place over the entire thing, power plant and sarcophagus. They finished the project in 2019. There’s a really neat PBS NOVA documentary about it, called “Building Chernobyl's MegaTomb.”

The photo above is the closest humanity has ever come to creating Medusa. If you were to look at this, you would die instantly.
The image is of a reactor core lava formation in the basement of the Chernobyl nuclear plant. It’s called the Elephant’s Foot and weighs hundreds of tons, but is only a couple meters across.
Oh, and regarding the Medusa thing, this picture was taken through a mirror around the corner of the hallway. Because the wheeled camera they sent up to take pictures of it was destroyed by the radiation. The Elephant’s Foot is almost as if it is a living creature.
