“We felt like, [as] storytellers, we would be dishonest if we didn’t incorporate those choices that he’s already made into showing what he is like and what his character’s really like.”
“We felt like it was important to show that that has been his character all along—that he hasn’t left. He has talked about how before there was Gilead, he was nothing.”
Now, June “has to really confront who [Nick] is since he has revealed his character—his true character—at the end of this episode.” (Source)
Oh sure, and now we’re supposed to applaud you for it? Should we thank you for ruining a story that some people have been following for years and investing their time in? Just admit that you put his character on the back burner after season 2 because it didn't fit your cards.
You spent five and a half seasons building Nick’s character in a way that mostly shows us his best side. You portrayed him as a man who would do anything for the people he loves… and then boom. A plot twist and a slap in the viewers’ faces, basically saying: “You fools, you are so naive, can’t you read between the lines? He’s not like that at all. His character is actually something completely different!”
Oh god… Go to hell with these cheap twists.

i feel like im not making any sense but does anyone else feel like there are stories that let u run with them and ones that spell everything out for you
#im reading that post that says artists are directors of audience reaction and not its dictator:#'you cannot guarantee that everyone viewing your work will react as you are trying t make them react. a good artist knows that this is what#allows work to breath. by definition you cannot have art where the viewer brings nothing to the table ... this is why you have to let go of#the urge to plainly state in text exactly how you think the work should be interpreted ... its better to be misinterpreted sometimes than#to talk down to your audience. you wont even gain any control that way; people will still develop their opinions no matter what you do#im thinking abt this again cuz i was thinking maybe the thing that lets adventure time work so well the way it does is cuz it doesnt#take itself too seriously that it gives the audience enough room to fuck with subtext and then fuck with them back yknow. i think it was#mentioned somewhere that they werent even planning to run with the postapocalyptic elements that are hinted in the show but changed their#mind after the one off with the frozen businessmen and dominoed into marcy and simons backstory. on the other side there are stories that#explain too much to let the story speak for itself and i think it ends up having to do more with the crew trying to lead ppl in a certain#direction than expand on what they have and i see a lot of this with miraculous. like when interviews and tweets are used as word of god in#arguments and it becomes a little stifling to play around with it knowing the creator can just interject. u can say its the crews effort to#engage with its audience but it feels more like micromanaging. and none of this is to say there ISNT room for stories that spell things out#theyre just suited for different things. if sesame street tried abstract approaches to themes and nuance itd be counterproductive#a lot of things fly over my head so i need help picking things apart to get it- but it doesnt have to be from the story itself. ive picked#picked up or built on my own interpretations listening to other ppl share their thoughts which creates conversation around the same thing#sometimes stories will spell things out for you without being so obvious abt it that it feels like its woven into the text. my fav example#for this might be ATLA using younger characters as its main cast but instead of feeling like its dumbed down for kids to understand why war#is bad its framed from a childs point of view so younger audiences can pick up on it by relating to the characters. maybe an 8 year old#wont get how geopolitics works but at least they get 'hey the world is a little more complicated than everyone vs. fire nation'. same for#steven universe bc its like theyre trying to describe and put feelings into words that kids might not have so they have smth to start with#especially with the metaphors around relationships bc even if it looks unfamiliar as a kid now maybe the hope is for it to be smth you can#look back to. thats why it feels like these shows grew up with me.. instead of saving difficult topics for 'when im ready for it'#as if its preparing me for high school it gave me smth to turn in my hands and revisit again and again as i grow. stories that never#treated u as dumb all along. just someone who could learn and come back to it as many times as u need to. i loved SU for the longest time#but i felt guilty for enjoying it hearing the way ppl bash it. bc i was a kid and thought other ppl understood it better than me and made#feel bad for leaning into the message of paying forward kindness and not questioning why steven didnt punish the diamonds or hold them#accountable. but im rewatching it now and going oh. i still love this show and what it was trying to teach me#yapping#diary

Leslye Headland: My story is going to be Jedi critical.
Fans: So maybe the story is just going to have an unreliable narrator!
Leslye Headland: The Jedi are the institution to the Sith's underdog in this story, much like the Empire was to the Rebellion.
Fans: Obviously it's just a complicated story told from a different perspective!
Leslye Headland: The question we are answering in this show is "what went wrong" with the Jedi leading up to the Prequels.
Fans: People who think this show is being unkind to the Jedi are just being unfair and not giving the story a chance!
#star wars#anti acolyte#anti the acolyte#acolyte critical#the acolyte critical#acolyte negativity#the acolyte negativity#leslye headland critical#headland critical#anti leslye headland#anti headland#how many times does this woman have to spell it out before people will believe her???#she's not being subtle about it at all#you literally do not have to watch the show in order to understand what its message is#the showrunner is just flat out telling you what it is#“it's an unreliable narrator” this#“it's from the villain's perspective” that#when the showrunner tells us she believes that the message of the prequels was the jedi being corrupt#and that her show is going to continue to follow up on that theme#it means that the jedi critical dialogue is just the theme of the show being given outright#it's only unreliable if the creator believes it to be#and she doesn't#she VERY VERY CLEARLY doesn't#fandom wank

Good evening (or morning, depending on your timezone).
Absolutely no hate, but I want to ask how you reconcile your enjoyment of the show with the reality of what Ikuhara has (most likely) done?/gen
I understand Death of the Author, but what drew me to Utena in the first place was its theme of critiquing the patriarchy and calling out abuse, which feels somewhat hypocritical now. I resonate with this show, and many of Ikuhara's other shows, on a personal level, which is why I am especially disappointed with the accusations since I now have to wonder how that reflects onto me as a person...?
Obviously I don't know you personally, but you seem to spend a lot of time and care on your analyses (which are great btw) so have you also struggled with this?
Again, there is like zero judgement when I say this and I'm absolutely not trying to come off as hostile (in case that is how this reads). And, there is no pressure on you to answer this and I'll completely understand if you want to ignore the ask.
Thanks.
hi, i've been thinking about this as well since yesterday, and it is kind of tough to figure out how to feel about. i think it's important to remember that ikuhara did not make revolutionary girl utena alone, for one. he had a whole team of writers and animators and producers and so on, that it would not exist without. obviously ikuhara played a big part in the show's creation, but far from the only one (if it was, i have no doubt it would be very very different), and . idk what my point really is here but i don't think his actions reflect on the show as a whole. it still is what it is, it still says the same important things about our society's systems of abuse that we've always talked about, even if the director didn't understand it or didn't want to understand it or however you want to put it. and by extension i don't think it reflects on to all the people who have enjoyed the show, who have seen their experiences in it, who have learned from it more about how this kind of abuse works and so on. and i think we need to be aware of what has (allegedly, but again, i believe it) happened, but i don't necessarily think we need to write off the show just because he had a hand in making it. because it is just as important as we've always known it to be, you know? though i think there are (as there has always been and there always is in anything) elements of the show to be critical of, and maybe some new things as well in light of this. i'll have to think about it more.
#this is a ramble i'm not rereading it so apologies if something is wrong or poorly articulated i also just woke up#i also hope i'm not coming off as defensive(?) over the show?? like i fully realize i'm biased because this is my special interest#and it's easier from the outside when there are controversies around creators of things you don't care about#to just say that the thing they made is bad or wrong anyway and to stop engaging with it#idk that probably doesn't make sense i'm just worried that i'm one of those people who uses#“seperate the art from the artist” in a wrong way or like as an excuse to not change my harmful behaviour#but idk i do think the show and its message about abuse stands on its own despite this. open to other input though of course#wow those tags were even more of a ramble i'm sorry#asks#m

On the topic of ‘bad mascot horror video games for kids’ the exception to the rule (or rather, something that understood the assignment) would be My Friendly Neighborhood.
I don’t want to spoil anything if you haven’t booted up the game before, but just…don’t be fooled by jumpscare compilations or the character design. From the opening cutscene this game grabs you by the fucking throat. The mechanics have thought put into them, the voice acting is top notch, and christ the fucking story - a complete story, one that has an end that isn’t promised in future ‘chapters’ or left ambiguous.
Yes, it has jumpscares from goofy muppet monsters, but they’re not cheap tricks. Once you learn how the game works they’re easy to avoid or at the very least anticipate - not to mention they’re survivable with the healing mechanic. And just when you think the scares are done, when you’re well into the game and have all the tools you need to navigate around potential jumpscares, the final act dunks you into the deep-end with the actual horror and nightmare fuel puppets.
I’m not sure how much the game as a whole qualifies as ‘horror,’ but it’s certainly being lumped in with the Whatever-Mascot Horror Game of the Week genre. Which is a shame because My Friendly Neighborhood is leagues ahead of those other games. It has more in common with survival horror than it does with mascot horror in terms of gameplay and tropes. It’s literally just the ‘monster’ designs leading people to assume its another Poppy Playtime clone complete with half baked story and repetitive, unimaginative gameplay loops. And that’s so far from the truth -
My Friendly Neighborhood is like if Sesame Street and Resident Evil had a beautiful muppet baby that opened its eyes to have an existential crisis when confronted with the horrors and apathy of modern capitalism.
#ra speaks#personal#video games#mascot horror#survival horror#my friendly neighborhood#I’m not trying to be harsh on the mascot horror genre but let’s be real. a lot of those games aren’t made from genuine joy for the genre.#which is a shame because as MFN shows you CAN make a kid friendly horror game that CARES deeply about the message and story it has to tell.#a lot of ‘click bait’ video games these days aren’t…games. they’re walking simulators. at best a compilation of fetch quests w flavor text.#video games are an ART medium. what emotions are you trying to evoke. what are you trying to communicate beyond language.#its art that cannot exist without participation of the viewer and that participation needs to be considered as an active force.#the player is not passively turning the page they are writing the story the rules the world with you. but if there’s no genuine love for it#from the creator…what is there? what’s left when the player is a vehicle for YouTube jumpscare clickbait and not an integral piece of art?#I’m rambly today. sorry.

PM Seymour covered your post in his most recent video "The Touch Starved Tumblr User"
just wanna congratulate you for that!
Yeah someone else shared it w/ me. Kinda insane to see a post I made on whim go basically... everywhere like that. Especially given that I made it from my mildly-popular-in-one-fandom position surrounded by a lot of friends of various levels of popularity, seeing it get posted by accounts with 50k, 80, 150k is like damn. Really highlighting the difference in what 'popular' can mean to someone. I hope people at least take home the message about how to approach creating and posting online to heart and pace themselves. Its remarkably easy to slip into the ditch with such an interaction driven system, so i hope that those reposts and discussions at least mean more people see & talk & internalize it
#ask#admittedly 'congrats' feels a little strange since i didnt really do much#and the video itself is sorta just a compilation of various posts vs. like#discussion of the topic i guess? at least from what i saw of it#but i cant complain since like i said its a message i think basically any type of creator should keep in mind

my god of war hot take is that the games have always been a parody of toxic masculinity behind male action heroes, even if not intentional during the greek era (or at the least presented awkwardly) bcuz it's 100% intentional during the norse era, and people who claim that kratos has "gone soft" are completely missing the point ESPECIALLY the point of the norse era, in this essay i will-- (GETS FUCKING SHOT)
#sorry i saw that the og creator didn't like that kratos has 'gone soft' and cackled#kratos was ALWAYS depicted as being in the wrong during the greek era#like the message might not have been portrayed nearly as well as norse era#(i think that they toned down the violence in the norse era for this very reason)#but like. kratos has always been this exaggerated depiction of toxic masculinity#and then the norse era is. literally depicting kratos as he grows past himself and teaches his son to avoid going down the same path#kratos's arc is LITERALLY about him learning to admit that he NEEDS and is WORTHY of love and can't just be a lone wolf type#while also giving atreus the opportunity to begin his own life separate from the problems that kratos admits he has and once had#'kratos has gone soft' HE SURE HAS BITCH!!!!!!! LET'S GET YOU SOME LOVE AND ALSO SOME THERAPY!!!!!!!!#gow
