LOST 2006-2007
We’ve done our best to live on this island. Some of us have come to accept we may never leave it. Not all of us have survived since the crash. But there is new life, too, and with it, there is hope. We are alive. Please don’t give up on us.

Frightober Day 1 - Home
Word Count: 573
Warnings: Childbirth mention, emergency c-section mention, hysterectomy mention
Fandom: The Frighteners
Pairings: Frank Bannister x Lucy Lynskey
Welcome to my first installment of Frightober 2023! Oh, I'm so excited to not just work on these prompts, but for this little peek into Frank and Lucy's life.
This will later be featured in my upcoming fic, Never Simple Or Planned, which will follow Lucy's pregnancy with Baby #5, Libby.
Enjoy!
————————
Lucy rested her head on Frank's shoulder, taking in the scenery around them as they drove on. He had rolled down the windows so that the both of them could take in the fresh air after spending five days in the medical center. She looked in the rear view mirror at the car seat that was turned to face the back.
She let her hand drift down over her belly, stopping it before it could touch the bandage that covered up the stitches. She sighed mournfully as she thought about the surgery.
Even compared to the terror of Julia's birth, this had been the scariest experience that she and Frank had with childbirth.
Despite her doctor's brain telling her how c-sections and hysterectomies happened everyday, she was afraid that she might not wake up. That she might not get to go home with Frank and this baby, and to their older children.
And, of course, there was the sense of grief that she wouldn't be able to have any more children. But, when she had learned that she was pregnant this time around, one of the thoughts that had been there from the beginning was that she was closer to fifty and than forty. Libby was going to be their last baby anyway.
So why did it hurt so much?
"I know I've said this ad nauseam for the last few days, but I can't wait to get home," she suddenly said quietly.
Frank smiled, kissing the top of her head. "Me, too."
"A part of me is afraid that the kids forgot us," she told him.
"How could they, Luce?" he asked. "They visited us everyday after school, and we called them before school and before bed."
Lucy sighed. "I know. I guess I'm still a little worried for when the excitement of a new baby wears off of them."
"I don't know-- our kids aren't really the jealous type," Frank said. "I mean, they might have little fits when they can't get what they want, but you know how much they love each other. And you saw how much they already love Libby in the hospital."
Lucy smiled up at him. "You're right."
As they pulled up to the house, they saw all of the kids, accompanied by Scarlett, Dean, and Mina, on the front yard. Both Mina and Julia had one of the twins on their lap, but all of them stood and jumped with joy as they saw the car pulling up. Frank and Lucy looked out the window, seeing pink balloons saying "It's A Girl!" and a pink and blue banner spelling out "Welcome Home, Libby!"
"MOM! YOU'RE HOME!" Julia cried out excitedly, running to the car once it was in park.
Frank and Lucy exited the car, with Frank going to take Libby and Lucy embracing her daughter as best as she could with her stitches and bandage.
"Oh, I missed you, Jules," Lucy murmured into her daughter's raven hair.
Seth, Maddie, and Adrian ran up to join their big sister, almost knocking Lucy over.
"Remember what Aunt Thea and Daddy said?" Julia scolded. "We need to be gentle--"
"No, Julia, it's okay," Lucy assured her. "It's okay."
Frank came back from around the car as Scarlett, Dean, and Mina came up to them. He held the carrier up so that everyone could get a better look at the newborn baby.
"Hi, Libby," Julia knelt down. "Hi."

US-funded projects addressing the ongoing impact of Agent Orange in Viet Nam (toxin cleanup, support for those with congenital disorders like the poet's) were disrupted by the abrupt dismantling of US foreign aid programming this year. Along with many others.
Today in: 2024: blessing the boats, Lucille Clifton 2023: Wound is the Origin of Wonder, Maya C. Popa 2022: When the Fox Comes to the City, Patricia Fargnoli 2021: aubade for the whole hood, Nate Marshall 2020: Keeping Things Whole, Mark Strand 2019: New Year’s Day, Kim Addonizio 2018: I Know You Think I’ve Forgotten, Jane Hirshfield 2017: The Writer, Richard Wilbur 2016: from Seven Skins, Adrienne Rich 2015: I Ask Percy How I Should Live My Life, Mary Oliver 2014: In the Park, Maxine Kumin 2013: To A Sad Daughter, Michael Ondaatje 2012: My Dead Friends, Marie Howe 2011: Staying After, Linda Gregg 2010: Dream Song 14, John Berryman 2009: What We Kept, Megan Alpert 2008: Please Take Back the Sparrows, Suzanne Buffam 2007: It Happens Like This, James Tate 2006: Tantalus in May, Reginald Shepherd 2005: September Song, Geoffrey Hill
A transcript of the poem text follows:
Text is in the shape of a standing person raising a fist in order to punch someone who is lying on the ground holding up their hands in defense. It reads:
hooking up with strange men on edibles is fucking awesome until you’re lying in his bed afterward and you can’t shut up about how much you want to hit henry kissinger over and over until he stops breathing. like, did you know that agent orange is apparently 100,000 times more potent than thalidomide at causing birth defects and to this day vietnamese infants have an elevated incidence of congenital disorders, including heart abnormalities, and like you’re not saying that henry kissinger is the reason you were born with a broken heart but wouldn’t it be so fucked up if he was and wouldn’t you then have every right to press your thumbs into his windpipe until he chokes to death and your hookup is like yeah you’re right that would be fucked up i’m sorry but what did you want to get i’m placing the order now and you say two spicy potato soft tacos please and you let him pay for it because he’s white and you’re too stoned to navigate venmo right now and it’s only like $2 but by the time the food arrives you’ve fallen asleep anyway, hand over your heart monitor, dreaming of kissinger’s blood dribbling out his mouth like hot sauce

Man, I flipped my wig when I saw the first Astraleyez post about Spell Bound (2023). The book debuted at the Lethal Matters book fair in LA and I pretty much begged my pal Michael C Hsuing, who was also vending there, to snag me a copy. Thank goodness he did, because the 333-copy first edition sold out pretty much immediately — many folks I recommended the book to in that first week were left wanting (there is a second edition out now and, while the cover is also cool, I think the cover here, shot by Emily Utne (somehow in 2023, not 1974?) is the definitive one.
Anyway, the book is a set of photographs of the cover of paperbacks from the collection of Mr. Eyez. As you might have guessed, they are unified by their interest in the occult, but they range from books about witchcraft to books that are extremely nervous about witchcraft but also turned on by witches and straight up horror novels both terrified of and supportive of witches. All of them are pleasingly worn in, which foxed edges, crinkled spines and smudges on the cover. The overall effect is not just a celebration of these often lurid books, but also the assembly of them as a the wares of some sort of perfect or archetypal occult/vintage book shop I can visit in my mind. It’s one of very few books I’ve encountered that conjures the memory of a smell.
Well worth trying to snag a copy if this sort of thing is your jam. I hope Mr. Eyez produces many, many more volumes!

hello ro jeyneofpoole boatgirl. The fitzjames news has rocked my world and rotted my brain because I love a historical mystery solved. As a AMC terror and a real life terror fan, what texts would you recommend to someone who just watched amc terror and now wants to read the research on the real thing
i love love love when i get this question ok. if your first exposure to the franklin expedition was the terror i think your best jumping-off point is michael palin’s erebus: the story of a ship. yes he’s the guy from monty python, no he’s not a professional historian, but it’s entertaining and well-researched and a great way to familiarize yourself with the general concepts that other more elaborate texts will touch on. then you just GOTTA read dr. owen beattie’s frozen in time, it’s one of the most iconic pieces of franklin literature and the descriptions of the beechey exhumations are so near and dear to me. some of the lead stuff is on shaky legs now, but this book was revolutionary for the longest time. then there’s may we be spared to meet on earth edited by russell a. potter et. al., which is a collection of letters to and from members of the franklin expedition. after you’ve read the others listed here you’ll be crazy enough to cry over this one.
a more niche read that i just finished was david murphy’s arctic fox, which is a biography of leopold mcclintock and his arctic career. it’s super compelling and mcclintock lived a very interesting life and seemed like a pretty okay guy especially for the time; murphy does a really good job and i don’t see this one recommended at all but it’s actually good. there are some minor issues with some little details surrounding, like, the peglar papers, for example, but that’s what the other books are for. honorable mentions include (ie they’re on my shelf staring me down) ice ghosts by paul watson, unraveling the franklin mystery: inuit testimony by david c. woodman, the man who ate his boots by anthony brandt, james fitzjames: the mystery man of the franklin expedition by william battersby, and icebound in the arctic by michael smith. but do NOT and i mean do NOT under any circumstances read dan simmons’ absolute drivel that novel isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. just watch the show and read these. ok love you byeeeee

Three Firefighter Shows & Their Queers
Station 19 vs. 9-1-1 vs. Lone Star
A. THE FIREFIGHTER SHOWS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Station 19 is a TV show about firefighters, created by Stacy McKee with Shonda Rhimes as Executive Producer, launched by ABC in Jan 3, 2018. It's a spin-off of Grey's Anatomy.
9-1-1 is a TV show about firefighters, co-created by Tim Minear with Ryan Murphy as Executive Producer, launched by Fox in Mar 22, 2018.
Lone Star (or 9-1-1: Lone Star) is a TV show about firefighters, co-created by Tim Minear with Ryan Murphy as Executive Producer, launched by Fox in Jan 19, 2020. It's a spin-off of 9-1-1.
They sound repetitive? Wait until you get to the next parts.
B. THE TOKEN QUEER COUPLES
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Station 19 has only one queer (bisexual) main couple: Maya Bishop (main character) x Carina DeLuca (main character) or MARINA. Maya Bishop is a member of Station 19, while Dr. Carina DeLuca is a medical doctor in... Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital (duh 🙄).
Cheating issue: Maya cheated on Carina with her ex, Jack Gibson.
Parenthood issue: Initially Maya didn't want to be a parent, but Carina wanted to. Maya changed her mind later.
Adoption issue: Marina's effort to adopt baby Liam was far from smooth. First, they needed to foster Liam. They also faced a risk of losing the baby.
9-1-1 has only one queer (lesbian) main couple: Henrietta Wilson (main character) x Karen Wilson (recurring character) or HENREN. Henrietta Wilson is member of 118 Firehouse, while Dr. Karen Wilson is an aerospace engineer.
Cheating issue: Hen cheated on Karen with her ex, Eva Mathis.
Adoption issue: Henren's efforts to adopt Denny, and later Mara, were far from smooth. They also faced a risk of losing their children with each adoption or child fostering 🙄.
Lone Star has only one queer (gay) main couple: TK Strand (main character) x Carlos Reyes (main character) or TARLOS. TK Strand is member of 126 Firehouse, while Carlos Reyes is a police officer, later a Texas Ranger.
Parenthood issue: Initially Carlos didn't want to be a parent, but TK wants to. Carlos might change his mind later.
(Potential) adoption issue: TK wanted to adopt Jonah, his little step-brother. By the time this piece is posted, Lone Star final season is still ongoing. We don't know yet what will happen to the adoption plan.
C. THE OTHER QUEERS: THE "ETERNAL BACHELORS"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Station 19 has only one other queer main character: Travis Montgomery (gay).
Relationship journey: He became a widow after his husband, Michael Williams, died. Since then he had a string of failed relationships.
Final relationship status: By the end of the show, Travis got a brand new boyfriend (Dominic Amaya), whom he could build a relationship with.
It is an odd choice to make Travis went through a string of failed relationships until the end of the show (May 30, 2024), when other main characters got their one 'true love'. Sure, other main couples have their ups and downs during their relationships, but each of them got a 'soulmate', someone who audience assumed would be their end-game partner. Since Station 19 already had Marina set and settled, it is as if the show was afraid to upset the general audience if there were more than one queer couple had a lasting relationship with a happy ending.
9-1-1 has only one other queer main character: Evan Buckley ("Buck") (bisexual).
Relationship journey: He had a string of failed relationships with 4 women and 1 man during Season 1 to Season 8A (current season). Currently he is single.
Final relationship status: Yet unknown, since the show is still ongoing.
Other prominent queer (gay) character on 9-1-1 is Josh Russo (recurring character). He had one failed relationship portrayed on the show during Season 2 (Josh' 1st appearance) to Season 8A (current season).
Lone Star has only one other queer main character: Paul Strickland (transexual).
Relationship journey: Paul had one date with Josie on ep. 5x01 "Studs", but they didn't pursue a romantic relationship after that. Currently, he's in a relationship with Asha Fulton, whose appearance is almost as rare as UFO sighting 🙄. So far, Asha's only appeared in 5 episodes in total, all were in Season 4.
Final relationship status: Yet unknown. Currently the show is on its final season and has aired 9 of 12 episodes of the season. Paul's girlfriend has not yet made an appearance, but there is also no sign that their relationship is in trouble. If fans were lucky, Asha would make an appearance at the final episode of the show 🙄.
D. THE DIVERSITY QUOTA
Tumblr media
All the three firefighter shows are marketed towards the general auidence. Each has only one queer couple who enjoys a lasting relationship, and (most likely will) get a happy ending at the end of the show. The other queer characters are not so lucky in love. Either they go through a string of failed relationships, or have an elusive romantic partner when the shows end.
What ABC did to Travis Montgomery of Station 19 is particularly telling. Why Travis didn't get a lasting romantic relationship with a happy ending? Station 19 has resolved any other problems with their characters, except for this one. The show tried to compensate it by giving Travis a major career boost and a brand new love interest. However, it means he had to build the relationship from scratch... again. And it still didn't answer the question: why didn't Travis get a lasting romantic relationship, when other main characters on the show did?
Paul Strickland's elusive girlfriend in Lone Star must sound familiar to Tevan fans, because that's how 9-1-1 treated Tommy Kinard during his term as Buck's boyfriend. Fans celebrated a less than one minute scene and zoomed his figure in the backgrounds, because Tommy's appearance was so few and far between.
Since Buck is bisexual, there's a chance that he'd get a lasting relationship with a woman. Another option is making Buck the Travis Montgomery of 9-1-1. He'd have a string of failed relationships throughout the show. When 9-1-1 ended, he could be in a brand new relationship with a man, because the show wouldn't need to portray the relationship any longer. Giving Buck an elusive boyfriend ala Paul Strickland seems unlikely, considering his personality. And by reflecting on what happened on other shows, the chance of Buck has a lasting relationship with a man is slimmer than celebrities on Ozempic.
It is as if there is a diversity quota for TV shows marketed towards general audience. If anyone disagree, let me ask this:
Why is there no show marketed towards general audience, which has more than one queer couple with a lasting romantic relationship & a happy ending at the end of the show?
'Coincidence' is not a logically acceptable answer, simply because the sheer number of shows marketed towards the general audience. The possibility of coincidence is also practically out of the window when we question 'why Travis of Station 19 didn't get a 'soul mate' while other main characters on the same show did?'
'There is no such diversity quota. I live in LA and have been working in the industry for decades, so you should trust me' is also not a logically acceptable answer. My question starts with 'why'. Logically, the answer should start with 'because'. That kind of answer reminds me of the dispute between Galileo Galilei vs. the Catholic Church. When Galileo promoted the heliocentrism doctrine based on the phases of Venus, the Catholic Church basically answered 'the doctrine is wrong. We've been studying God and his creations for centuries, so you should trust us.' We know how the story ended.
