"On Duke's Birthday:" A Jazz Tribute by the Mike Westbrook Orchestra
Introduction: The jazz world is filled with tributes, homages, and celebrations of past masters, but few manage to capture the essence of their inspiration while forging new paths quite like Mike Westbrook’s “On Duke’s Birthday.” Released in 1985, this live album by the Mike Westbrook Orchestra is a dedicated suite to the memory of Duke Ellington, recorded on May 12, 1984, at Le Grand Theatre in…

AllMusic Staff Pick: Mike Westbrook On Duke's Birthday
The music here is not Ellington re-arranged or re-conceived, or an attempt to bring back the big band era. Why Westbrook titled his record is anybody's guess. This music is ingenious. The composer wrote five thematic musical conversations for a large band in the process of creating a new harmonic language.

E-A-G-L-E-S!
The Philadelphia Eagles have dominated the NFC and are on track to win the Super Bowl. As a fanatic, I join my fellow Eagles fans in anticipating the emotional response that will undoubtedly shape our perspective until the season kicks off again in autumn. It’s a unique bond we share, one forged by decades of loyalty and heartache, and it is this connection that makes each new season feel like an opportunity to prove ourselves once again.
Looking back, I wasn’t alive to experience the back-to-back championships in 1948 and 1949 under Greasy Neale, nor did I witness the dominance of the 1960s team with Chuck Bednarik. However, I did have the iconic photograph of Concrete Charlie with his cigar as my wallpaper for many years. While Bednarik wasn’t widely known as a cigar enthusiast, he became my idealized legacy cigar smoker. His no-nonsense, gritty persona made him an emblem of what it means to be tough, and I’ve mirrored my appreciation for cigars after his image, as though to channel some of his toughness and perseverance into my own life.
In the 1980s, I wasn’t around either, but I admire Ron "Jaws" Jaworski—not only for his influence on the cigar industry but also for his leadership on the field in Eagles Green. Jaworski's post-career involvement with cigars and his role in promoting the culture among NFL players made him a perfect figurehead for the Eagles' ongoing relationship with cigars. Even though I missed out on watching some of the greatest players in the Eagles’ history during the earlier years, my connection with the team started in the 2000s.
My first real experience—and my deep adoration for the Eagles—came during the 2000s with players like Brian "Weapon X" Dawkins, Terrell Owens, and Brian Westbrook. These were the players who introduced me to the true essence of Eagles football: a relentless, never-back-down mentality. I was 15 when the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. Looking back, I could’ve used a cigar to cope with the disappointment and the heartache of being so close to greatness and watching it slip away.
Still, I wouldn’t change a thing (though secretly, I might). Those years taught me more about handling emotional disappointment and remaining hopeful through life’s challenges than any relationship or business arrangement ever could. In many ways, that Super Bowl loss shaped who I am today. It forged resilience in me, a lesson in persevering through adversity, and the importance of sticking with something through thick and thin, even when the odds are against you.
As a seasoned cigar enthusiast and an Eagles fan who finally experienced the team’s first Super Bowl win in 2017, I understand more than ever how cigars allow a celebration to continue beyond the playing field. It's not just a symbol of success; it's a physical representation of the emotions and memories tied to a hard-fought victory.
Cigar smoking is interwoven into NFL culture and, more importantly, into the history of the Philadelphia Eagles. From Mike Ditka to Fletcher Cox, to Seth Joyner, cigars have come to symbolize dominance. They are not just a celebratory item; they are a marker of success and a reminder of the work that goes into achieving greatness. The patience and precision required to craft a perfect cigar mirror the Eagles’ own journey: multiple setbacks, adjustments, and failures before reaching that underlying "perfection." Like the Eagles, cigars are honed over time, tested and refined, and only truly respected through success.
As a blue-collar individual, cigars remain an affordable luxury that no other item can rival in cost and appreciation. For me and many other Eagles fans, cigars have become a staple of victory celebrations, especially at tailgates where the tradition runs deep. Jalen Hurts, the leader of this new generation of Eagles, honors the legacy of cigars by savoring one after major victories, a gesture that reinforces the unity and pride that binds the team and its fans together. It’s a shared ritual that adds another layer to the Eagles’ storied history.
I hope to join Jalen Hurts today in a celebratory cigar, raising it high after another championship win, and help prevent a three-peat from happening against a team that seems to have the NFL in its corner. With the Eagles' continued dominance, I know that this cigar tradition will live on, passed down through generations of fans and players alike.

From Saxapahaw to the Stars Slow Teeth’s Journey Continues with a New Album and a Massive Tour
Slow Teeth began as a creative experiment—a way for Robert Chamberlain (drums, synthesizers), Justin Ellis (bass, vocals, keyboards), and Jeremy Haire (guitar, vocals) to reconnect with making music after a long pandemic-induced silence. Forming in Saxapahaw, North Carolina, during the summer of 2021, they initially focused on free-flowing improvisations, only to find that their chemistry was too strong to be a passing project.
By March 2022, they had translated those early sessions into structured yet unpredictable live performances, embracing a sound that blends post-rock’s sweeping grandeur, shoegaze’s immersive textures, and indie rock’s emotional core. Their debut album, “I”, set for release on March 21, 2025, showcases their ability to craft sprawling, cinematic compositions driven by deeply personal themes—the passage of time, fractured relationships, and the search for meaning in an increasingly chaotic world.
Recorded in an old house in Saxapahaw, the album retains the intimacy of its setting while expanding into something vast and otherworldly. Mike Westbrook’s mastering adds a final polish, giving each track the weight and clarity it deserves.
Slow Teeth has already earned a reputation for transcendent live performances, sharing stages with Explosions in the Sky, Xiu Xiu, and Holy Fawn while playing at venues and festivals across the country. Now, they embark on their most extensive tour yet, bringing their evolving sound to both familiar and uncharted territories.
Tour Dates
Sunday 3/23 - Raleigh, NC - The Ritz - Supporting Explosions in the Sky Saturday 4/26 - Carrboro, NC - Cat's Cradle Back Room - Headlining Record Release Show w/ Ben Hackett Thursday 5/29 - Raleigh, NC - Neptune's - Supporting Shock TeaSaturday 8/23 - Durham, NC - Beer Study Monday 8/25 - Denver, CO - Skylark Lounge Tuesday 8/26 - Salt Lake City, UT - The DLC Thursday 8/28 - Seattle, WA - Bad Bar Friday 8/29 - Vancouver, BC - Batch Kitsilano Saturday 8/30 - Vancouver, BC - Kingsway Club Sunday 8/31 - Portland, OR - Turn! Turn! Turn! Monday 9/1 - Pacifica, CA - Winters Tavern Wednesday 9/3 - Los Angeles, CA - Genghis Cohen Thursday 9/4 - Mesa, AZ - The Underground Friday 9/5 - Las Vegas, NV - Red Dwarf Saturday 9/6 - Denver, CO - Better Barnum Animal Center (DIY)
With their album on the horizon and a coast-to-coast tour ahead, Slow Teeth is set to carve their name into the next chapter of modern post-rock and experimental indie.

Cleveland Cavaliers Add Damian Jones in Offseason Deal

On July 8th, 2023, the Cleveland Cavaliers traded $110,000 in cash considerations to the Utah Jazz for center Damian Jones.
Athletic center Damian Jones joined the Utah Jazz as a piece of the Los Angeles Lakers' trade to offload Russell Westbrook in a three-team trade that also included the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In the deal, the Jazz sent starting point guard Mike Conley to the Timberwolves. The deal signified that the Jazz were willing to sacrifice any playoff hopes and focus on player development. After the trade, the 27-29 Jazz went 10-16 the rest of the way to finish 37-45 and out of the postseason.
After seeing little playing time with the Lakers, Jones had a boost in minutes with Utah. In 19 games, the 6-11 big man averaged 4.6 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 0.6 APG and 0.5 BPG in 15.8 MPG.
After the season, Jones exercised his $2.58 million player option for the 2023-24 season to remain in Utah. Soon after, the Jazz freed up a roster spot, dealing Jones to the Cleveland Cavaliers for $110,000 in cash considerations according to The Athletic.
Cleveland was able to acquire Jones without sending a salary using a because Jones was on a minimum contract. The Cavaliers were able to use the minimum level exception.

Jones stepped into a backup role with Cleveland with starters Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley ahead of him on the depth chart and veteran Tristan Thompson also vying for minutes.
Cleveland began the 2023-24 season just 1-3, but picked up its performance going 17-10 to reach 18-13. After dropping two consecutive games, the Cavaliers went 17-1 over the next 18 games to become 35-16.
Injuries were a story all season for the club. Starters Mobley, Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland all missed more than 25 games with various injuries. The Cavs went 13-18 over the final 31 games to finish 48-34 which was fourth in the East.
Jones was mostly in a very limited role seeing scant minutes. He appeared in 39 games with Cleveland, compiling 2.7 PPG and 1.4 RPG in 6.9 MPG. Mobley's injury did open up some time for Jones briefly, leading to a season-high 14 points against the New Orleans Pelicans in March.
The Cavaliers went on to the first round where they faced the 47-35 Orlando Magic. Cleveland was comfortable early on. Donovan Mitchell had 30 points in the series opener to lead the Cavs to a 97-83 win in the first game. In Game Two, Cleveland led by as much as 22 points in a 96-86 win.
Orlando bounced back significantly at home, routing Cleveland 121-83 and 112-89 in Games Three and Four in Orlando. After four double digit contests, Game Five was closer. Cleveland won 104-100 after Evan Mobley blocked a potential game-tying layup from Magic forward Franz Wagner with five seconds left.
Mitchell had 50 points in Game Six, but Orlando had three players score at least 20 points in a 103-96 Magic victory. Game Seven saw the Magic take an 18-point lead late in the second quarter. Facing a potentially embarrassing elimination, the Cavs outscored Orlando 75-45 the rest of the way to win the series 4-3.
The Cavs faced the top team in the NBA, the Boston Celtics in the next round. Boston's Jaylen Brown had 32 points in Game One as Boston won easily 120-95. The Cavs answered back with a 118-94 rout in Game Two. However, the Celtics took the next three games to win the series 4-1 and eliminate Cleveland.
Jones played nine scoreless minutes in Cleveland's playoff run. After the season, e became a free agent. The Cavaliers did not re-sign Jones and he ended up agreeing to a deal with the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association.

Damian Jones on how he envisioned his role in Cleveland (via Cleveland Cavaliers on SI):
"Coming in as a backup five and keeping the offense flowing, whether that's running pick and rolls or doing touch actions. Being able to provide vertical spacing and being able to protect the rim."
If he was surprised about the trade:
"It did catch me by surprise. I'm not going to lie. I just found a place in Utah and something told me not to sign a lease and I'm glad I didn't sign the lease. A couple of days later I got the call. My agent told me."
On his impressions of Cleveland and the organization:
"It's been good. It's crazy, two of my boys from the Bay (Golden State) when I was out there, they're from Cleveland. One of them moved back [to Cleveland] and another visits all the time. We hang out and kick it. They tell and show me things about Cleveland. The organization is great, everybody's been welcoming."

Voices From The Garage: The Zonks At The Dairy Queen

Blast from the past May 22, 2011 at 11:02 p.m. | Updated July 7, 2015 at 5:37 p.m.
by Eric Nicholson
On a Saturday night during the summer of 1967, five teenagers scaled the Dairy Queen in Hope, Ark.
As people began to gather below, the sound of drums and an electric guitar cut through the air, and the Zonks began to play.
"We just said, 'Let's play on top of that sucker. Let's play on the roof.' And we did," said lead guitarist Buzz Andrews. "Did it before U2 and the Beatles."
The Dairy Queen was on U.S. Highway 67, the town's main thoroughfare. As word spread and curious passersby stopped to watch, the crowd overflowed the parking lot and began to spill into the street.
"We didn't really know how much of a following we had until that," said drummer Gary Thrasher. "It was kind of our own little Woodstock."
Arkansas State Police soon arrived. The band, and most of the audience, assumed they would disperse the crowd and shut down the performance. Instead, they began diverting traffic down other roads.
The Zonks weren't the first band to play atop Dairy Queen-that honor belonged to Rick Durham and the Dynamics-but that show "wasn't much," Thrasher said.
"It was a big deal for Hope, Ark.," Andrews said about The Zonks.
Satisfaction
According to Andrews, the Zonks were formed about 1965 as the Offbeats, a name they kept until a band member pointed out that they were on beat and shouldn't advertise otherwise.
They settled on The Zonks, which, all agreed, was "very original, very cool," Andrews said.
The band shifted over time, growing from a trio to a quintet, and adding new members as others lost interest or moved away. For a brief period before its dissolution, the band added a horn section.
The longest incarnation was the group that played atop Dairy Queen.
Alongside Andrews and Thrasher were bassist Alan Phillips-whose elder brother Ronnie was the band's manager and promoter; keyboardist Mike Westbrook; and vocalist Mike Tolleson, a charismatic Florida transplant with strong stage presence, on vocals.
The Zonks wasn't quite what Thrasher had in mind when he moved to Hope from Prescott. He had hoped to form a jazz trio, but it was the time of the British Invasion, and rock 'n' roll was in the air.
The band practiced at first in Alan Phillips' bedroom, until they played the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" within earshot of his mother.
"She's Church of Christ," Andrews said. "We were no longer allowed in her home."
They moved to Andrews' garage to get out of reach of prying ears. They rechristened it the Zonk Room.
The Zonks made something of a name for themselves in southwestern Arkansas during the late 1960s. They began playing carports and pool parties in Hope. Eventually, there were regular gigs at Hope Youth Center alongside bands with names like the Uniques, Mouse in the Traps, the Morticians and Squirrel Fever.
"It seems like we won second place in the poultry festival battle of the bands," Andrews said. "That sort of launched our musical careers."
When friends and siblings went off to college, The Zonks started to get gigs at parties at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia and Southern State (now Southern Arkansas) University in Magnolia.
They played at the grand opening of the Dairy Queen on East Street in Texarkana, Ark., and at an Arkansas High School homecoming. But the rooftop concert was the highlight.
The quintet reveled in their relative fame. Andrews, who was also starting quarterback and Mr. Hope High School, remembers the band being greeted by shouts of recognition as members walked through downtown Hope.
But fame was not quite enough to hold the band together. The Zonks, though they mostly wound up in Arkadelphia for college, dissolved after high school. They played at a couple of Hope High School reunions, but otherwise have pursued their own paths.
"I guess we weren't really dedicated to the band, because we didn't drop out of school and become rock stars," Andrews said.
Renaissance
The rooftop show at Dairy Queen would have marked the peak of The Zonks' fame had someone in the company's corporate office not happened upon a promotional photo for the show.
In the photo, the five band members are posed casually with their instruments on a vintage white truck covered with the DQ logo and parked in front of the restaurant. They look confidently at the camera.
Something about the photo seems to capture the spirit of the era, said Dairy Queen spokesman Dean Peters.
The company obtained the rights for the photo and used it in promotional materials for its 50th anniversary in 1990. More recently, it began hanging the photo in Dairy Queen restaurants across the country.
"Nostalgia plays an awful large part of who Dairy Queen was and is," Peters said. "We thought our customers would enjoy it."
Unbeknownst to band members, the photo, 40 years after it was taken, was sparking a renewed interest in The Zonks.
"I got an email from my brother saying, 'Hey, I saw The Zonks on TV last night,'" Thrasher said, referring to the photo's appearance on a Food Network program.
The reappearance of the photo and the interest it generated was news to Thrasher, as it was to Andrews.
"We had let it go," Andrews said. "We had moved on."
Andrews, a high school track coach and blues guitarist in Dallas, now receives regular emails from curious Dairy Queen patrons who see the photo, Google Zonks and find Andrews' Facebook page.
"I now have two sets of followers. I have my Zonks followers, and I have my blues followers," he said.
The photo even inspired a self-published novel, available on Amazon, about a fictional Zonks reunion.
A real-life reunion, however, is unlikely. Alan Phillips died several years ago. Though Andrews is returning to his hometown to headline this weekend's balloon festival, the rest of the band are firmly entrenched in their own lives, he said.
Hope no longer boasts a Dairy Queen, but the flat-roofed building on which The Zonks played 44 years ago still stands on Highway 67, just in case they change their minds on the reunion.
