Album Review!
Peach Pit - Being So Normal
Released September 19, 2017
I completely fell in love with this band and their lazy summer sound and gentle vocals. Damn such a great album - Let’s go:
Track 1 : Drop The Guillotine - Words cannot describe my love for this song. The swaying guitar vibe seems to make the summer heat radiates off of this song. Something about Neil Smith’s voice just makes me want to close my eyes and dance on the beach. This song is more upbeat and gentle with it’s steady bass and drum beat as the guitars riff away. That breakdown too, it grabs your attention. Overall, one of my favorites from this album!
Track 2 : Being So Normal - Fuck, this title track! The muffled guitar riffs and slides just fill your ears as the bass carries on. Supposedly, this track is about Smith’s breakup and the changes he’s observing in his Ex-Girlfriend. It’s tough to watch someone you used to love quote take the piss right out of me. When the guitars really rev up in the middle and start swelling, you can’t help but start jamming, if you haven’t already, of course. This solo on this one kicks ass too! Peach Pit can pull off those static muffled guitars well!
Track 3 : Techno Show - A gentle vibe song. A stark contrast from the previous, this song takes its time with subtle riffs and steady bass. Also, for some reason, the drums compliment the guitars so well! Let yourself go to this soft summer jam. Favorite lyrics from this one : With you here it seems okay for me to be out of place in this dank room Making any awkward situation comfortable with that someone by your side.
Track 4 : Alrighty Aphrodite - The beat in the begging sets the tone for another one of my favorite tracks off this album. Another song that Smith takes hold of and makes the best it can be. Peter Wilton’s bass skills coming in once again and damn do they ever hold up. Peach Pit have a sound of their own and this is the most Peach Pit song I could possibly think of. A song you have to listen through again if you weren’t paying attention the first time, especially to that kick ass solo.
Track 5 : Chagu’s Sideturn - Another favorite! The story of this one is great, frontman Neil Smith recalled a moment with an Indonesian tour guide who said they should “...sideturn sometime!” This ended up being snorting crystal meth off of Chagu’s knuckles. On that note! A dope song with a funny story to go along with it, a vibe to crown all vibes. Iconic lyrics: I'm just like you / sideturned and ripped as shit again
Track 6 : Not Me - A track about moving on but keeping them in the back of your mind, the guitars on this one carry the vocals so well. An upbeat that’s actually pretty dark once you read the lyrics. Nevertheless, this track is once again a late night summer jam fit for dancing with the fireflies. The bridge of this song too, another crescendo and solid wake up. Favorite lyrics: She's always rockin' a smile / Haven't seen mine in a while / Always so happy to be / But not me I love the back and forth between these lines as he sings about himself and then the girl. An underrated song from this album, give it a listen!
Track 7 : Hot Knifer - This song is featured on my 15 Songs for Rainy Days playlist and for good reason. I can practically feel the warm summer rain dotting my face as I listen to this soft and powerful track. “Hot Knifing” is a method of smoking hashish, a coping mechanism. Something about the last little guitar bit makes me feel light and tired at the same time. Another underrated track from this album, for sure.
Track 8 : Private Presley - I love Mikey Pascuzzi’s snare drum in this intro, setting the scene for the wartime song. The first verse about loss and gritting teeth, something different but welcomed from the band. The song may even be interpreted as a metaphor, leaving for war and wanting to return home much like the narrator is feeling in this song. This is using the story of Elvis Presley being in Germany during WW2 and referencing his story frequently. Overall, this song is an under appreciated masterpiece, take time and listen to what it’s saying. The hollow strings with the wah on that guitar, they carry this one gently home. Another great breakdown in this one as well.
Track 9 :  Tommy’s Party - Ending this album with a drunk feeling vibe. The sway of the guitars start this song off top introduce Smith’s soft vocals. This song is supposedly from the perspective of a friend coming to comfort Smith after a girl ditched him at a party. Favorite lyrics: Seemed like loneliness was all we'd ever do /But now she's knowing you, just like I used to Letting your only friend become not just yours anymore is a knife in the chest. The guitars throughout this album, man. A chill way to end a great song and an incredible album.
Album Overview - Although only 9 tracks, this album is so full of life. From the solid vocals, deep lyrics, vibing guitar work to a steady rhythm section. This album remains as one of my favorite summer albums, it just drips with lazy summer evenings watching the world move around you. I’m eager to see what Peach Pit have up their sleeve because so far, this album is one for the books. Such a damn good album, well done Peach Pit. :)
Let me know what you think of this album! If you have an album you’d like me to review, shoot me an ask! Until then, I’ll talk to you guys in the next one.

Fresh Meat Fridays: Week One
Tumblr media
The first band to be featured this week is self described indie folk rock band Aster and Ivy. Consisting of four members and originating in Jacksonville, Florida, the band currently has one single released. The catchy, upbeat track entitled “Silhouettes” is an earworm in the best possible way. After one listen, the hypnotizing guitar melodies (by Mitch Fountain and Irno Kola) and smooth, enchanting vocals (by Irno Kola) will have you hooked. Other members include Quinn Alexander (drums), and Ryan Cox (bass guitar). The band recently announced the upcoming release of their debut EP Tell Me Pretty Things, and have a variety of merch available to purchase. Find them on twitter and instagram @AsterAndIvy, and on spotify here.

Peach Pit is yet another indie band, although this time of the pop variety. They released their debut LP Being so Normal in 2017, which is the perfect album to dance or chill to. The mellowed out and endearing vocals performed by Neil Smith are perfectly complemented by the seemingly effortless and indescribably groovy instrumentation in the background. Besides Neil, who also plays rhythm guitar, the other members of this Vancouver four piece delight are Peter Wilton (bass guitar), Christopher Vanderkooy (lead guitar), and Mikey Pascuzzi (drums). To me, this album is a perfect mixture of teen experiences and angst, along with an overall sound that is honestly timeless and as smooth as butter. They can be found on Twitter @peachpitmusic, on instagram @peachpit17, and on Spotify here.
Tumblr media
Finally, we have California-based alternative-indie- oh my god this is so many genres- rock band Wee Beasties. Most recently, they have released a single entitled “Valentine”, which I am absolutely enthralled with. The almost theatrical vocals and catchy guitar riffs feel like home to my pop-punk grown self. They also have two EPs, both released on iTunes last year. The first is simply named after the band itself, holding the title Wee Beasties. The second is titled Tame the Wave. While their self titled EP is my personal favorite, both are terrific and unique to an extent in which I can barely describe them. Band members include Codie Collins (vocals), Nic Tesi and Gio Najeh (guitar), Nick Merrick (bass guitar), and Max Martinez (drums). You can listen to them on spotify here, and find them on Twitter and Instagram @weebeastiesband.

EP Review: Peach Pit - Sweet F.A.
Guitarist Christopher Vanderkooy and singer Neil Smith first kindled their flame when they met at the 2014 Pendleton Music Festival and promised each other a jam session. A full two years later, in 2016, they added drummer Mikey Pascuzzi and bassist Peter Wilton to the mix, forming Peach Pit. So far, the band has one project out, an EP called Sweet F.A.
The collection of four songs has a very recognizable surf-rock sound that makes it stand apart from other modern music. However, the songs are not as happy as they sound. They are often about the hardships of coming of age (Seventeen) or the despair of being in love when you’re young (Drop the Guillotine). Upon its release, Sweet F.A. earned its share of negative feedback. It was often accused of being one-dimensional or unoriginal in its style. But I think that its songs are made to appeal to younger audiences and, while it is obviously inspired by ‘90s alt. music, it uses its elements skilfully, especially for a first EP.
Featured Tracks:
Drop the Guillotine
The most clear-cut track on the EP, and also the most somber-sounding. This song is sure to bring out emotions, especially for teens who have gone through similar experiences.
Seventeen
A happier-sounding track with intense percussion. The perfect song for a flirty summer day.

Peach Pit - Being So Normal
The band Peach Pit is an indie pop/rock group from Vancouver formed in 2016. The four boys in the group are Neil Smith (lead singer), Mikey Pascuzzi (drummer), Peter Wilton (bassist), and Christopher Vanderkooy (guitarist). The band has been described as “chewed bubblegum pop”. They create a wholistic vibey feel that will keep you coming back for more.

https://soundcloud.com/eatshitpeachpit/drop-the-guillotine
The album begins with a synth-pop song called “Drop the Guillotine”. The song tells a story about an ex that moved on and a guy that had once not cared about her, begins to show her attention now that it is convenient for him. The vocals are cathartic and smooth. “Drop the Guillotine” is an upbeat track with a laid-back vibe. Certain portions of the lead guitar solos are juxtaposed with a rougher muffled sound that creates texture toward the end of the song. “Drop the Guillotine” is a bop that will get your foot tapping, and your shoulders moving until your whole body is dancing with no restraint.
https://soundcloud.com/eatshitpeachpit/being-so-normal?in=eatshitpeachpit/sets/being-so-normal
The track “Being so Normal” transitioned into a more melancholy feel with heavy reliance on electric guitar solos to show Neil’s emotions.  Neil tells a narrative about an ex in high school and how they grew apart and changed. By the end of the song, the clean guitar riffs begin to fray and become fussy, and more chaotic showing how he became after that relationship.
https://soundcloud.com/eatshitpeachpit/techno-show?in=eatshitpeachpit/sets/being-so-normal
“Techno Show” is the next song on the album. It uses perfectly timed silences, and guitar riffs to draw a cheerful feel after the sadder tone of “Being so Normal”. The song tells a story of not wanting to be in the upbeat party environment but finding comfort in being with the girl he is with. This song contrasts with the others with its complex metaphors and romanticizing lyrics to a simplistic bluntness that humanizes the song with a level of rawness.
https://soundcloud.com/eatshitpeachpit/alrighty-aphrodite?in=eatshitpeachpit/sets/being-so-normal
The song “Alrighty Aphrodite” illustrates strong allusions to the story of the goddess Aphrodite. This song uses elaborate metaphors to romanticize this subject. In the classical painting of “The Birth of Venus”, she is depicted in a clam shell, resulting in the sarcastic first lyric of the song, “Take a seat back in your clam shell if the oceans not enough, nor am I”. He describes a girl as having traits like the Goddess Aphrodite in describing her power over men, along with her inability to stay faithful and decide who she wants to be with.
https://soundcloud.com/eatshitpeachpit/chagu-sideturn?in=eatshitpeachpit/sets/being-so-normal
“Chagu’s Sideturn” references a trip that Neil took to Indonesia where he had a guide named Chagu. His guide would say “We gotta sideturn sometime” which Neil later found out was crystal meth. Neil describes his personal ups and downs by describing Chagu. “Chagu’s Sideturn” has riffy vibes and a fun melody that makes you want to dance.
https://soundcloud.com/eatshitpeachpit/not-me?in=eatshitpeachpit/sets/being-so-normal
“Not Me” is a song about how Neil is longing to be with a girl and feels her slipping away. He describes feeling upset through the song while she is happy. This song contains lots of intense fuzzy sounding guitar solos. Certain lyrics show resentment.
https://soundcloud.com/eatshitpeachpit/hot-knifer?in=eatshitpeachpit/sets/being-so-normal
“Hot Knifer” is arguably the most depressing song on the album. Neil describes himself smoking alone because he isn’t with the person he wants to be with. He says throughout the songs that he is okay, but contrasts it with the irony of the drug use.
https://soundcloud.com/eatshitpeachpit/private-presley?in=eatshitpeachpit/sets/being-so-normal
“Private Presley” begins with a soft militant repetitive beat that continues throughout the track. The drummer, Mikey Pascuzzi uses perfectly timed silences and breaks in drumming. The song makes references to Elvis Presley throughout the song and in the title, and ends with an intense guitar solo.
https://soundcloud.com/eatshitpeachpit/tommys-party?in=eatshitpeachpit/sets/being-so-normal
“Tommy’s Party” is one of the more somber tracks on this album and my personal favorite. It is told from the perspective of one of Neil’s friends that feels neglected as a friend. He feels like Neil keeps choosing girls, and getting drunk over hanging out with his “bud” like old times.
In review, I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys indie, or alternative music. Peach Pit’s album, “Being so Normal” shows lots of passion and energy. I give this album 5 stars. If you enjoy artists like Hippo Campus, COIN, Rex Orange County, or Clairo, Peach Pit will be your next favorite band.
