pavia is so unbearably dog coded — putting his wolf stuff aside he’s literally like a dog.

how it feels as a writer to refrain yourself from sharing anything about a WIP until it’s fully done.

Nikolai and Price going to an evening game of poker with some of Nik's "friends", John sitting with his guard up as he's surrounded by a group of dangerous international criminals, all of them carrying guns, all of them glancing at him with a curious look. Price is uncomfortable but doesn't show it, while Nikolai is awfully relaxed considering the situation.

The evening goes on, drinks, cigars and hearty laughs are shared around the table, the bets reaching numbers Price doesn't even make in half a year. It would be a problem, if he wasn't winning most of the rounds, piles of cash gathering around him as he feels the tension build in the room. One of the younger guys, another russian speaker, starts getting an attitude about it around two hours in, and Nikolai immediately puts him in his place with a single sentence Price doesn't understand, his voice booming, as intimidating as he could be, a heavy silence falling inside the room as the lad with an attitude sits back down, eyes not even daring to look at Nik. The silence is only broken by Nik again, a warm laugh leaving his lips and the other men joining him, their nervousness barely hidden.

It had been so easy for Nik to command the room, and even after the tension had diminished, Price could see how much respect these men had for him, while also clearly being scared shitless of the man. Price had rarely felt more attracted to him as he did at that moment, and the wink and smirk Nikolai gave him when he noticed him looking in his direction absolutely did not help.

John eventually left the table, excusing himself for a moment but squeezing Nik's hand briefly as he got up, moving deeper in the building they were using for their game.

A minute later and it's Nik's turn to excuse himself, quickly finding Price who immediately grabs him by the collar of his open shirt and presses his lips against his, Nik hungrily returning the kiss and pushing John against a nearby wall.

When they return to the table, hair tousled, face flustered, all it takes is one glance from Nikolai to shut the others up. This is his territory, this is where he's comfortable, surrounded by dangerous men who show him respect and never dare to cross him.

It's easy for John to forget how natural this all is for his partner, and if Nikolai brought him here tonight to assert his dominance and show off a little, just so he could impress John, well, that mission sure was a success.

What if it's literally just the gameplay reflection of his excessive emotional repression?

The mask of serenity glued so tightly to his face that his sheer will is enough to shove any negative emotions aside and raise his SP. All for the sake of never letting that one spark start a fire. All for the sake of never losing what little control over himself he still has.

I'm insane because this next month? It isn't simply about to be a month of us wondering if Akutagawa is going to live or die or some secret third thing. I won't just be wondering if we're getting another fake-out or what's next for Ame-no-Gozen as time turns on.

All I can think about?

Atsushi's decision likely decides the fates of everyone else.

Atsushi decides if Ueda lives or dies here which means whatever happens next is the DIRECT result of his choices. Presumably, whether Akutagawa lives or dies. What happens to the ADA- those who've been struck down and those still fighting. And knowing Atsushi and the way this story unravels, he likely won't kill Ueda.

Atsushi's inherent kindness and the way he sees himself there signals something to me. The idea of no one deserving to die because someone else abused their gift. The idea of that evil is in the hands that wield it and no tool is evil until it is. The idea that simply because someone tells you you're to blame and that you must atone, doesn't make it true- an idea Atsushi has come to understand himself.

I have notes stashed away for an essay on a rainy day about Bungou Stray Dogs and the cycle of abuse (as a vague TL;DR- PLEASE GIVE ME A CHANCE TO WRITE THIS, PLEASE COLLEGE OF MINE). In BSD, we've seen this cycle clearly through our two little weirdo freaks- Akutagawa's recycled rhetoric and verbal attacks that he likely learned through Dazai and how he continues to facilitate said behavior, through Atsushi's time at the orphanage and how the headmaster's abuse is the direct cause of Atsushi's low self-worth and intense self-hatred, and how they finally break free of that cycle.

Atsushi first with Kyouka, then Akutagawa as he begins to realize what he needs to overcome and that he no longer seeks that validation from Dazai as desperately as he used to, and now Atsushi again with Ueda.

Atsushi is going to set Ueda free because that's the person he is and because that's what he needed someone to do for him. In a way, Atsushi is saving himself.

Because "It's not your fault".

I have so much to say on this topic, but that is a well referenced and cited essay for another day.

Bottomline is, there's going to be large ripple effects because the core is severed and no longer bound by rope and chain and past. What exactly that means remains to be seen, but it might be Ueda being able to 'atone' for the sins he feels he's done or caused. It might be Ame-no-Gozen losing control and going berserk. All we know is killing Ueda would cease the conflict, but based on everything know and what I've already said- Atsushi likely won't do that.

So, everything that happens next will be the results of Atsushi's choice- good or bad.

All we can hope for is that the weight of that choice and the weight of the consequences that follow won't crush him and that any guilt he may carry after won't bury him.

Just a thought I had while replaying this fight & choosing to not imprison Illario...

What if Caterina didn't promote Lucanis to First Talon during this conversation after the fight?

Illario knows Caterina won't show him mercy the way Lucanis seems intent on doing. He went too far with trying to get Lucanis killed and then trying to usurp Caterina's position as First Talon.

He knows it won't matter what Lucanis wants to do. Caterina holds the power to decide his fate.

So... What if, instead of giving Lucanis that choice, Caterina decides what to do about Illario? Because she wants it known that House Dellamorte is still capable of holding the position of First Talon, even after Illario has taken such drastic actions to try and usurp her position.

Although, let's face it, in terms of Crows, Illario's actions aren't that misaligned from what Crows have been known for. Lucanis even says later on that Caterina would be proud of Illario for trying to get rid of her.

The funny thing is, Illario is what Caterina expects Lucanis to be. Cold. Manipulative. Someone who clearly doesn't let his heart and attachment to people get in the way of doing something. Someone who wants the power of being First Talon.

Now Caterina has to face the fact her favorite grandson is willing to let Illario just walk away like nothing happened. No, she's not going to stand for that. If anything, she's less mad at Illario for trying to get rid of her than she is about what he did to Lucanis.

Caterina wouldn't just let him walk away, simply being babysat by the Fifth Talon like Lucanis requests. No, she'd have him imprisoned for an indeterminate amount of time.

Or she'd have him killed. Illario probably expects this to be her decision.

Caterina won't do what Lucanis asks. She won't refuse to imprison Illario because then it would make it seem like she had become soft, that maybe she couldn't handle being First Talon anymore. (And maybe that's why, in game, she promotes Lucanis and lets him make that decision. Because then it's Lucanis showing a hint of forgiveness/compassion towards Illario instead of her.)

In my version of this, Caterina decides that Illario's punishment will be imprisonment. She won't have him killed, but she also won't let his imprisonment be that simple either. She'll find little ways to make his life unbearable from that point on.

Lucanis eventually hears about how Illario is being treated. He'll go to Viago and ask him to help get Illario out of Treviso, maybe even out of Antiva entirely. Viago will, of course, voice his displeasure at being caught in the middle of House Dellamorte drama, but he'll agree to help.

Caterina isn't surprised to find out Illario has somehow managed to "escape" and get out of Treviso. In fact, she knows Lucanis had a hand in it.

It's not until after Illario's disappearance that Caterina decides to step down and name Lucanis as the new First Talon.

Illario hasn't forgotten Rook is the one who spoke up on his behalf, to convince Lucanis not to imprison him even if it wasn't Lucanis's decision to make. (My canon Rook is also a Crow, and in the past, had been one of the few people who ever showed Illario any true kindness. Illario thought she was trying to use that kindness to manipulate him, so he pushed her away.)

He knows the Venatori have overtaken Minrathous after the dragon attack, when Rook chose to help defend Treviso instead. With nowhere else to go, he sets his sights on taking down the Venatori he had sided with not that long ago. When Elgar'nan makes his move... Illario is there to fight alongside Rook, Lucanis, and anyone else willing to stand up against the blighted god.

Illario knows joining the fight doesn't erase what he did, what he would've done had his plan been successful.

Lucanis still struggles with Illario's betrayal. Illario tries to figure out how to move forward, past all the hate and vitriol that drove him to wanting Lucanis dead.

Eventually, they'll reconcile as best as they can. And as First Talon, Lucanis will give Illario permission to return to Treviso should he wish to do so.

edit: might need to add some additional dialogue to this to make it more clear, but a clarification in the interim; he knows about his own footprints. he's just surprised to see something similar already there when he knows he's only just landed. he lifts his own shoe to confirm that they're not identical (and also to reveal this to the viewer). seems his stoicism beat off the clarity in this one, sorry 😭

thinking about the reboot mw games collectively and it’s so sadly unfortunate because like. when put up against the other two, mwiii fails so visibly.

first of all you’ve got their thesis/emotional core, right. for mw19, it’s all about the personal motivation of being a solider, the cost of war on an individual. what it means to fight and discovering the importance of what you’re fighting for. for mwii, it’s about trust. the importance of knowing that your team has each others backs, the weight that it has between individuals. what happens when that trust is broken and how it’s found again through vulnerability, because that’s how you truly know you’re there for each other.

and then there’s mwiii..? you should let your sergeant kill a prisoner illegally so said prisoner, when he breaks out of maximum security prison, doesn’t kill your sergeant 4 years later? you should illegally kill people who piss you off (shepherd)? sure there’s the whole “never bury your enemies alive”, but where does that come in to play outside of the soap/makarov interaction? it’s definitely not a valid reason for price to kill an american general in his own office. they could’ve used it for graves if they wanted to take it a step further, but no— graves doesn’t betray the team again, for whatever reason. we’re expected to consider him just a much a member of the team as anyone else, and the narrative treats him as such outside of a few bristly reactions to his involvement.

secondly i take a huge issue with how characters were handled in mwiii. literally everyone is here, and there is no reason for several of them to be. alex felt like a cameo— you see him actually on screen for maybe 30 seconds. farah’s missions feel forced for the sake of her involvement. not that farah shouldn’t be in this game, but makarov’s flimsy reasoning for targeting the ulf is so clearly an excuse to involve her. it feels very random and transparent as a decision to reuse her character because she’s familiar. again with graves— why is he here? i still genuinely do not understand why they decided to retcon his death. it was a perfect arc for mwii to kill him, and him being alive adds absolutely nothing to the story. he has nothing to do in mwiii and there is zero reason for his involvement other than “people liked him in mwii and he has a cool accent.”

within the 141, it’s mostly rehashing of the growth/personality that each of them showed in previous games. none of them have an arc, except maybe price if you’re willing to call the *post credit scene* where he commits cold blooded murder a completion of an arc. gaz, soap, and ghost are static versions of themselves that simply are just … there for most of the plot. they’re not out of character or ruined, but none of them individually have anything going on that can’t be tied back to price.

i think a lot of it comes down to the way they tried to shoehorn mwiii into the original trilogy’s storyline. people loved those games, and nostalgia sells. i don’t think it’s a coincidence that makarov was a big marketing factor for this game— and that’s not to say that mw19 or mwii didn’t abuse that either, but in execution you can feel the difference. price, gaz, soap and ghost are all their own characters miles away from their original trilogy counterparts. makarov… isn’t. he’s a poorly written villain riding on the success of the original trilogy— he’s scary because he’s *makarov*, not because he’s a real threat. it’s cheap. the knockoff “no russian” mission felt insulting. it’s a callback with no real impact in the story, just simply “look! remember when we did this in 2009 and everyone loved it?”

and all of it culminates into a shit ending with shock factor that it tries to make you feel emotional. i’m not sad over this character death. i’m mad, because it’s unearned and lazy. i realize it’s a lot to ask a multi-billion dollar corporation to actually put effort into their stories, but… it’s such a let down when the previous games actually had at least an ounce of passion. i’m just still so disappointed with this game ruining what could’ve been a really interesting and unique story.

This scene is honestly one of my favorites in the game.

(Spoilers ahead for the storyline & Lucanis's romance in this clip & under the cut.)

Lucanis falling asleep with his head in Rook's lap shows just how much he's learned to trust her, how much he's now willing to trust Spite.

I'm betting Spite was probably begging Lucanis to go to sleep so he could finally have a turn to talk to Rook. Lucanis, though, doesn't want to fall asleep because he doesn't want to miss a moment with her, not after what happened.

I've seen it mentioned somewhere that Bellara says Rook was gone for weeks, but there doesn't seem to be a definite answer on how long exactly. General consensus is 3-4 weeks from what I've read from others who've posted about it. There doesn't seem to be any explanation either as to how the team got Rook back.

Lucanis had to have been hit hard in the wake of what happened. He was finally beginning to trust someone enough to admit he loved them and in an instant, Rook was taken from him. He probably also thinks about missing that first shot against Ghilan'nain and how, if he'd succeeded, then maybe things wouldn't have gone so terribly wrong, maybe some of the ones they lost would still be alive.

My headcanon is that at some point, Lucanis absolutely spiraled after about the first week. Spite probably struggled to understand why Rook wasn't around anymore and why Lucanis wasn't trying to find her.

None of my gaming friends have played this game & my best friends aren't gamers. So, my options were either share my thoughts here or just go scream into the void.
