Hitler's Final Madness: An Absurd Farce About the "Victim" Narrative

My demand from the beginning has been to clarify that autumn and ygpgsgl are not the same person, and to require ladyyomi, who condones and encourages such remarks, to apologize. I publicly asked her to provide three types of evidence:

Screenshots of the alleged harassment.

Links to the original fanfiction allegedly "plagiarized," along with comparison images of the suspected plagiarized paragraphs.

Any verifiable timestamps or account logs supporting their claims.

In other words, only if they fulfill the above three points can their accusations against me be considered valid.

However, ladyyomi and her supporters did not do this. Their response was:

Unilaterally blocking me, preventing me from clarifying the facts, and then stigmatizing my mentions in her posts as "harassment," but it was they who spread a large amount of autumn=ygpgsgl statements from the very beginning, not me. I'll say it again: they posted exactly the same message under the three works "A Friend Like You" (ladyyomi), "A Note from Me" (autumn), and "The Birth of Romantic" (ygpgsgl), especially the last one, which already constitutes an open provocation against me.

Attempting to revoke the legitimacy of "anonymous creation," they regard my anonymity as "block evasion" and "anonymous ranting out of revenge," equating anonymity with shirking responsibility, thereby denying the value of my work itself. They deliberately ignore that my anonymity is an effort to convey the truth to the public while protecting myself. Furthermore, they demand that I provide my Discord account name to prove that I am not autumn. Obviously, even if I did, they would continue to argue that "this is a self-directed performance by autumn," because they have long falsely claimed that "autumn has thousands of alternate accounts." Any user supporting autumn can be slandered by them as an alternate account of autumn using this rhetoric. Their style of speech is like kidnappers holding hostages demanding ransom from family members in exchange for their "apology."

Repeatedly using labels such as "homophobic bully," "attention-starved," "narcissist," "sad and lonely" to belittle my character, they try to characterize me as an unreasonable troublemaker with mental issues who refuses treatment; they use psychiatric terms like "mentally ill but refuses treatment," "immature," "clowning again" to humiliate me, undermine the legitimacy of my expression, and attempt to stigmatize my lawful rights defense and self-protective statements as the ramblings of a mentally ill person, urging me to stop "spreading rumors" about her (which are actually legitimate accusations). They then use this as a basis to threaten me with expulsion disguised as concern but actually intended to humiliate (for example, "hope you can get through this," "go get treatment," "stop hurting others").

Confusing the boundaries between public platforms and private spaces, they disguise themselves as "exhausted victims of ongoing harassment," labeling my quoting of their defamatory remarks in self-defense as "crossing the line of harassment," while treating her publicly made slanderous statements as private speech; they downplay and rationalize their aggressive behavior by saying they "just blocked you" or "just rejected your opinions," but ignore that they themselves repeatedly stalk and repost on Tumblr and AO3, mock me in tags, and then claim that I am "block-evading" and "not letting them go."

Resorting to collective denunciation, using "group consensus" to isolate me, continuously emphasizing "we all know what happened," "no one will believe you," "only you are making a fuss," using group pressure to make me appear as an unreasonable, unsupported lunatic, thereby inciting uninformed audiences to block me. They hope to exclude me from the community through technical means. ladyyomi even shamelessly creates and posts sarcastic memes mocking me as "yomi surrounded by friends, leaving only autumn talking to herself."

Meanwhile, the so-called evidence they listed:

Only a bunch of IDs with unverifiable sources and screenshots of private messages with ladyyomi. I have repeatedly emphasized that before July this year, I had no private communication with ladyyomi, and any logic suggesting that the person in the pictures = autumn = me is absurd. Their pictures can neither prove that it is autumn nor that it is me.

An emotionally charged interpretation of my autoethnography and rights protection record statements, containing nothing meaningful except a bunch of emotional rhetoric that fails to address my core demands. When they found an equally emotional and angry accusation in the PDF I published, they treated it as a treasure, immediately screenshotting it as evidence that I was trying to issue death threats against them. However, this is exactly what I intentionally wanted everyone to see. I wanted everyone to see how strongly ladyyomi’s absurd accusations affected my mood and how they pushed a rational and wise cultural researcher to this point today.

ladyyomi and her supporters' recent words and actions have clearly implied: none of them are innocent — that is to say, not only have they, as I mentioned before, condoned and encouraged the spread of such false statements, but they are also the deliberate planners and disseminators of these conspiracy theories. This is the point I was making in that post: ladyyomi could not have coincidentally and conveniently come into contact with these people claiming to be from China and naturally call them "her readers," unless they were originally part of the same group. Anyone familiar with Chinese expression habits can immediately recognize that these statements are comments written by foreigners who know nothing about the matter using a translator — since these Chinese people's statements are deliberately fabricated, ladyyomi's actions are tantamount to admitting that she herself is the person fabricating, spreading, and maintaining these statements.

I also want to add: screenshots from the comment section of my work show that this has been a systematic defamation campaign against me starting from January this year, carried out by at least three people: ladyyomiart (AO3: LadyYomi), vicecommanderhijikata (AO3: oninofukuchou), and lightmelodyva (AO3: LightMelodyVA). You read that right, they have been targeting me from the very beginning. I received a suspicious anonymous comment at the beginning of this year (January or February), with the anonymous accuser falsely claiming that I was autumn’s alternate account created to promote her novel "Twenty Three Nights," which defends Kazama Chikage. But I ignored it at the time and deleted the comment as spam. ladyyomi and the others should feel lucky because I no longer have a copy of that message, allowing them to mock me for rambling during a psychotic episode.

Chronologically, they first fabricated a large number of false facts about autumn, then pinned these baseless accusations on me, portraying me as an immoral, repeat offender: "she plagiarized saltyneo’s articles," "she has countless alternate accounts," "she hates fujoshi," "she harasses minors with NSFW content," "she is blocked by 99% of the fandom," "she deletes comments once exposed," "she uses anonymity to bypass blocks and send hateful messages," "she has always had a bad reputation," using these negative moral accusations to create the impression that "everyone is her enemy." autumn issued a clarification statement titled "A Note from Me," denying all the accusers’ allegations, but they not only ignored her efforts, they went further by posting even more irresponsible negative comments under her article.

They united to accuse me as victims, pretending to be "harassed authors" from the Chinese internet, claiming that they "only made mild suggestions but were retaliated against," and tried to form a group accusation with other accused parties, saying that I was "spreading hate through my works" and "writing revenge plots" to prove that I have character flaws, deliberately ignoring the context of my original words. They also used social justice language to gain support, fabricating lies such as "she attacked LGBT character pairings during Pride Month" and "she is an anti-OC troll" to seek moral superiority. But I have repeatedly stated on various occasions: I am not autumn, I do not oppose otome or BL, I support LGBTQ, and I oppose any form of personal attacks. I have never contacted any saltyneo fans through private messages. The group I initially satirized in my autoethnography was not ladyyomi (in fact, the original group I satirized has tacitly pretended nothing happened; they don’t even dare mention my name on social platforms because they know doing so would harm their fanbase, but unfortunately, ladyyomi lacks such self-awareness).

But my efforts to clarify were equally ignored. Instead, they began to further reinforce and repeatedly cite the absurd accusations they fabricated from Chinese authors—more precisely, they falsely claimed to have been harmed by me in the name of those I criticized in the original text—when all I did was scholarly cultural critique research. They even dared to use translators to forge Chinese people's statements, treating these nonsense claims as their "evidence," because they assumed that the vast majority of people do not understand Chinese and would not personally open my autoethnography to verify the truth of these claims. They placed moral judgment above textual quality, mixing emotional narratives and moral accusations in their storytelling, using illogical attacks like "she's too jealous of others," "no one is proud of her in real life," "she's a typical AI fan" to provoke readers' emotional aversion, and repeatedly implied "even if she writes well, she doesn't deserve to be liked," emphasizing "no matter how well you write, if your behavior is immoral, you should be expelled." But now it seems that the ones truly jealous of the other's talent are precisely those who made false accusations trying to silence me, not me.

These people’s distortion of facts has seriously disrupted my life, trampled on my creative enthusiasm, and shattered my trust in the fan community. I began to doubt the authenticity of likes and comments—especially anonymous ones. They repeatedly refreshed my works, making me feel that "no one is willing to seriously read my work except these people deliberately smearing me." I no longer want to open comments and private messages; I fear being insulted by malicious commenters and then blocked, and I fear my words being taken out of context and twisted by them. This is not the treatment I, who was inexplicably dragged into this dispute, should endure: all I did was write honestly. I reiterate: I have never and will never respond to them using the same attacking rhetoric they use against me; I am only revealing how they distort facts to slander me.

As for ladyyomi’s accusation that I use GPT to read and write replies—that is true, and it is their only truth. If I didn’t use AI, given my current physical condition, I simply wouldn’t have time to handle so much information (they tried to overwhelm me with a flood of messages full of lies and emotional manipulation, hoping to defeat me without a fight). Anyone who has dealt with severe depression knows that people like us struggle even to take care of daily life, let alone have the leisure to "harass" them online. If it weren’t for these people repeatedly provoking my boundaries, I could have completely ignored their absurd accusations.

I have already given them enough time to state their positions and even provide evidence to defend themselves, hoping they would come to their senses and bravely admit their mistakes, thus avoiding further pursuit from me. But their responses have been deeply disappointing. I have done all I can. At this point, I no longer accept their apologies, nor will I comply with any of their demands. I hope all of them face platform penalties and pay the price for the serious consequences caused by their deliberate smearing and isolation of me.

hello october anon, i'm very sorry for the delay i've had such a time but believe me when i say toxigriffe hasn't left my brain. i'm about to give you so much more of an answer to what you asked (but dw there will be pictures)

so it looks like whatever seal plikki have on their mouths does belong to the supreme. and it appears that even in their true forms this seal still lasts.

and it's not just a block either. it seems like resisting actually hurts plikki, like a shock collar.

and then right after marinette makes the wish, the seal appears again beneath her feet.

whatever power the supreme has, it's more powerful than the wish. but what could have made the supreme so powerful to begin with? my theory is this: the supreme got a hold of the ladybug and black cat miraculous (maybe even the whole miracle box) and made a wish. we don't know what it was, but it seems that there's evidence enough to back up the inclusion of the clause that no one can supercede their wish. that's what makes them the supreme.

lets take a look at what the miracle box looks like in fu and then marinette's possesion:

doesn't it look like the symbol of the order of the guardians?? just with an x superimposed over it??? and since fu had the lb & bc miraculouses at the start of the series, maybe this miracle box that the supreme acquired as the guardian also had those miraculous. that's how toxigriffe ended up getting their proper miraculous in the paris special!!

i think the intro is telling us a story of what happened, actually. first, the supreme got a hold of the miracle box. next, they made a wish. (i assume it's an image of the wish, given what the wish looked like in re-creation)

the image splits into hexagons, with the one with the wish happening forming in the center. i'm guessing all those other hexagons are parallel worlds, and this world in the center is the one the supreme became the supreme of

then we get an image of this person, who i assume is the supreme, given the giant x they are standing in front of - the same symbol that blocks the guardian insignia on the box and on plikki's mouths. like all the fractured worlds featured in the previous image, the supreme stands in the midst of fractured pieces of what looks like glass.

maybe all the shards represent worlds the supreme has tried to take over before, but failed to. maybe they are all the worlds the supreme has conquered already. or maybe the broken mirrors are meant to parallel the supreme to poor emonette, whose misuse of her powers (under the supreme's threat of her life) have fractured her body and soul.

but unlike emonette, the supreme doesn't have the miraculous of creation. the supreme isn't the girl who can fix anything.

My Big Feedback Thread

(Note: apologies if this is a bit messy or ramble-y. I wrote this in my notes app.)

Hello all. I'm not quite sure how to start this to be honest. I've been around since Alpha. I remember being very excited for all of the new features and constantly giving feedback in one way or another. I've kinda stopped for a while, but now users are scared to give feedback due to the new rules and, well, I have nothing to lose. I have had nothing to lose since August and doublely so since the last one of my referrals stopped playing due to the AI thing. I've been online and sometime communicative here and there. I've helped a couple of users and have contemplated staying here until Thirs Tee got new art (the oldbies will remember me comming Zale x Thirs Tee art and posting about it. It still is my favorite piece), but the amount of issues I've had and I have seen other players have has gotten to the point where I have to say something.

I don't know how long this'll be up, but I hope staff at least reads this. I still recall my good experiences with most of y'all. I hope y'all understand where I'm coming from. I'm not intending this to be harsh, so (naturally) apologies if it comes off as such.

The Good Things

Firstly, Santae is the first petsite that I've played on that had nonvinary characters off the bat, as well as label options for our pets! It may have been because I joined in around Pride Month and it may not have been an option before, but I love that it is an option for our pets to be nonbinary or agender and such. Silvershade and Skye (especially Skye, I vividly remember them) are so cool to me. I love nonbinary characters being canon rather than something assumed!

Secondly, the friends list and block list? Wonderful, no notes. I can now befriend people onsite. I can now block people. I wish at the very least the blocking feature came out earlier, in case users felt uncertain around certain users.

Thirdly, I love the starter pets. I love the pipsqueak dust. My pets are primarily pipsqueaks because I love their little baby wide-eyed forms. The starter pets are also really cool, especially Nochturns. Not many petsites, I feel like, have moth-y creatures, so I'm glad that Santae does. It was actually the pets that brought me back. Multiple times. Which I suppose is the point of a petsite.

Fourthly, I'm glad patch notes are their own seperate thing now. Again, wish they came earlier, but it's nice tobe able to look in one place for important patches rather than on the Discord.

There is good things, glints of gold-like sparkles in a rock. Beautiful, womderful things I love about the site and hope that this will become a good petsite, solidly in with some of the greats. But there's a lot of issues that I have that, as it stands currently, I cannot continue to play as a result.

Accessibility

I will say major strides in this topic have been taken. I appreciate some of the settings (such as reducing animations around site, color sensitive mode, auto mining, etc) that have been put in place with disabled users like myself in mind. I especially appreciate the auto mining. It makes the worry of having to click or tap multiple rocks disappear, and it helps my wrists not get strained.

But there still isn't ALT text. I recall, early on in my account, seeing a Tumblr post someone put out misusing the ALT text feature and had noted that ALT text was meant to describe the image for those who use screenreaders. I was reassured that ALT text would be used properly... and then never saw it used again. Tumblr posts from your site's blog are one thing, but the site itself also does not have ALT text currently. Those who use screenreaders won't necessarily be able to know what each image is. I know that someone else pointed out that the images of the shop links don't have it and that it's rows and rows of buttons. It's just inaccessible, especially on a website where people look over the site initially before joining. I appreciate the quests having the ability to toggle on their names and what they have requested, but I wish this was something implemented earlier and sitewide, and it's still not a replacement for alt text.

(Quick note: I have no idea if other petsites have this issue as well. This is more coming from a concerned player who tries their best to care about accessibility. I do know that it's heavily advised to have ALT text and it's not horribly hard to add in the code.)

Secondly, the colored text in news posts makes it hard and distracting to read. Plain text would be better, especially since some colors might be worse on the white backing of the news posts than regular, plain text. I'm unable to personally read through them half because of the colored text (the other half is the centering breaking the news post formatting at times). I understand wanting to make your characters' names stand out, but perhaps there is a better way of doing so? Maybe allow users to opt into the colored text highlights if they choose, so that not only are players that don't want that don't have to go out of their way to toggle it off, but also so that potential players interested in the site aren't turned off by it.

A lot of the much smaller issues that I have with the site (not very accessible on the forums, espcially not on mobile, lack of dark mode, some smaller things that I'm forgetting) makes it feel like accessibility is an afterthought. I'm not intending to be harsh here, but it just doesn't feel welcoming for many users. Mining should have come with auto mining when it came out. Images should be described when released. Dark mode should be included (and I know a lot of site have issues with that, but still). Granted, this site is still in Beta. Things still can be added. It hasn't been fully released yet. I understand, I do! It's just the way it has been brought up before, reassured that it is on the list of things to do, and then nothing happens that makes it feel this way, I guess. I get rhat images are catchy. I get that the colored text is pretty. I get that this site is in Beta. But it just feels like accessibility is an afterthought.

A little small thing that personally annoys me a tad bit but doesn't neccessarily fit here, but I'm not sure where else to put it: I wish there was more disability pride and representation onsite. Canes, crutches, and wheelchairs still aren't things onsite, much less wearable for our avatars. I recall suggesting a disability pride pin (because some people (like me) like the disability pride flag's colors) and was told that staff was afraid of having too many pride pins. The only disability presented onsite is bad eyesight (through the glasses some NPCs wear), which is a disability, but I wish there was more. I get that not every player or potential player is going to feel represented (which is why I always design "my" player character off of my beloved OC Zale). There are over a thousand players (as of writing this, over 1,200 players have been online in the last 24 hours) and potentially one to two billion people speak English. I wish, however, there was a bit more disability representation.

Transparency

When I read criticisms of this site, one of the main ones is "lack of transparency", and I can see why. When several users asked if the images onsite were AI generated or AI based, we (even staff themselves) were lied to. We were told that the characters weren't AI, only to be revealed that they were based on AI by CJ later on in an announcement. When we asked "hey, these items are exactly the same image as these other items. Were these images drawn by staff?" we were lied to. We were told that they were all drawn in-house, only to be told that they were bought assets. When people started to ask if CJ had tried to start another petsite, we were told that he had not, only for it to come out that he had (and that's a whole thing in of itself that I don't remember all of the details of, so I won't say more). When players asked if lootboxes were going to be a thing, we were told that they weren't. A week later, the pet crate lootbox began to exist. We were lied to, again. Artist and staff pays aren't super well-known and, again, feel like they have been intentionally hidden. How much are artists being paid to make onsite assets? I wish things weren't intentionally obscured like this. I was staff at one point, and things were still hidden from staff, and it's annoying and saddening. I wish CJ and anyone else that knows on-staff were more transparent rather than lie and hope no one notices. Even now, the information that the intial NPCs are traced over AI images isn't well-known and feels like it's intentionally hidden. The feedback thread has been unpinned in the past (it's pinned again now) but has been locked. The lootbox feedback was locked. After the lootbox feedback and some user confusion (it feels like), the constructive feedback rule was added, much to the confusion of many. Several feedback posts disappeared, again much to users' confusion. I wish there was some transparency to all of this. Would being upfront with "hey, we have a no AI rule now, but we have used AI in the past" turned away players, including myself? Yes. But it would have been honest. It would have been the right thing to do.

Transparency is just something that feels like it's lacking a lot of the time. We don't know why certain actions do or do not happen. While there was some transparency about the KS pets returning, and the cash shop items returning, there isn't a ton of it, especially with regards to CJ giving away premium items at random. We can't question staff actions (which is a semi-normal rule on the petsites I've been on, but the extent of which this rule is enforced is not). Actions are taken, things are removed or changed, often without the why. Someone won multiple contest catogories in rhe first contest without any second checking or reason why (or any backup in case someone did win multiple catogories for the contest). Again, forum threads disappeared without any reason why, making several users in one case think negative action was taken. There's no clarity, no transparency in staff actions and staff why's. Why does CJ mass gift with his name attached, anyways (genuine question. Y'all can send out items via the Santae Team account)? Until I joined staff, I didn't realize that Ember was the only programmer/coder for the site (and the "I'm stuck in CJ's basement jokes" aren't that great in my opinion. IDK). Assistants as a role disappeared abruptly, it seems. CJ will go on rants about the negative things in the Discord chat (which I get the frustrations, I do, but it feels like there's a time, place, and way to do that). Users are afraid to crituque this site, even before the rule was solidly out into place, because there are rumors of people being banned for bring up something as simple as "I don't like this feature very much".

I don't think we should be scared of negative actions for sometimes saying crits in a not-super-constructive manner. Is it annoying? Yes, but sometimes players don't know what annoys them about a thing but need to voice it anyways. I know I have done such on other sites, but striking down on negative opinions feels like it's cultivating an enviroment where one has to be positive or else. "It's just a beta, things will change" shouldn't be a go-to response for some things. CJ complaining that people thought the saying were cheesy made me feel a bit afraid to voice that I don't think eveey gift from CJ needs a message like that. Staff complaining about how their actions are always seen as negative make players afraid to voice their opinions. Criticizing players for bring up negative opinions will make players less likely to voice them.

There's also just the feeling of needing to please CJ. I mean no harm towards you, CJ. I know I have directly named you several times, but there are times where it feels like you're overstepping as an owner and needing to meddle with things that don't necessarily need you, personally, to deal with them. I understand not wanting to hear criticisms, but blanket banning non-constructive criticisms and making players be afraid of criticizing you without any transparency as to why maybe you banned some users that happened to criticize you is bad, bas in the way of being overly controlling. I get wanting the userbase to like you, but sometimes the best way of getting a userbase to like you is by listening and not gift bombing (especially not different gifts at different timezones. That cultivates some unhealthy behaviors). Heck, the userbase doesn't have to like you for the game to be halfway decent. Neopets' TNT is well-beloathed for making bad decisions, but players still play, Neopets is still a Thing. Neopets is still loved... in a way. Flightrising, Dragcave, I don't even know the owner, much less have an opinion on them, and I still love them (FR less so due to accessibility issues). I'm not saying "become TNT". Please don't. But not every player will love you or even like you, and that's okay.

I wish staff turnovers, when I was staff, were a little more transparent, and I wish I could've said goodbye. I wish we were told why staff was parting ways. Maybe things have changed. I hope so. I wish the NDA was more blunt on what former staff/current staff cannot say. I didn't entirely know (and still don't) what I'm allowed to say. I don't know if I would be released from the NDA if I was banned. I don't know, still, why certain things happened while I was staff. It felt like both discords were a bit of a mess when things should have been more smoothed out. It felt like the beta-general didn't have a well-known purpose. I was told it was meant to discuss news and such about the site when people have trailed off for long periods of time about non-news stuff. Heck, we made a ton of Thirs Tee family jokes back in Alpha (I vividly remember the Thirs Tee family tree). I wish that things were clearer, I guess. I wish things were more transparent.

Uh, woah, that was a ramble. Apologies. I feel like it's all important though. Again, I mean no hard feelings here.

Summary

This'll be quick because I missed an hour of an event I wanted to go to. Oops.

But:

- There should be more accessibility and transparency.

- There should be oversight and backups when something unexpected happens (like maybe scan enteries before posting to make sure they fit the theme and don't misgender characters)

- Criticism is valid. Sometimes that is voiced simply and "non-constructively". That's okay.

- CJ should take a step back. I heard some people suggest a PR person.

This is my foray into the world of whump. In the past few days, I have seen and enjoyed a lot of excellently written whump, so I’ll be reblogging it here, and I have some ideas of my own as well.

l will be updating this post timely regarding my squicks, if any. As of now, I can only say that I do not like sexually explicit content.

I’ll be reblogging whump fics I liked! It’ll take some time to be entirely done though. I’ll reblog master lists first, then slowly the fic posts. I hope that’s alright with the writers of the said fics.

So here is something about me.

I go by Nila/Archer (my mutual @hum-suffer was very kind to give me so nice a nickname!) I am a medical student. I try to be medically accurate in my writing, but sometimes that is sacrificed for an emotional impact.

Most of my angst/whump/hurt-comfort fics will be featuring two well known characters, from vastly different works. One is Jaime Lannister from the GoT/ASOIAF franchise and the other is Arjun(a), the protagonist of an Indian epic, The Mahabharata.

These two characters will usually be in an AU situation which would differ story to story, which I will be sure to mention at the beginning of each original story post. Should you not be comfortable with what I stated here, please do not interact with this blog.

I also have some ideas with original characters, involving prompts I have seen around Tumblr, which I will post when I can. (I am, sadly, forever having exams)

Taking weird shots at one of the better Daniel accounts who actually posts good and interesting content from the races that most people don’t see and relevant news articles, and who clearly has sources they’re getting information from when one of your bigger contributions to the fandom is posting articles on Reddit that set Daniel up for hate is crazy. Maybe ask someone where they got their information from instead of trying to jump to discredit them.

If you think asking for proof is trying to discredit someone then I don't know what to tell you. Literally all I did was try to find official journalistic info about a question. That's why I asked Medland.

You unnecessarily dictate how others write characters, especially asexual ones (pointing out the use of bad stereotypes is not this and completely understandable).

You are not plural safe. (BTW I use the term plural, please use this term, not D.I.D). I have a zero tolerance policy for not only people that are negative about/to plurality and systems, but also people that misuse plural experiences for their own entertainment. Some examples would include:

Featuring characters doing things very similar to "switches" because you find it funny/to show they're "mentally unstable".

Have your character talk to "people inside their head" to paint them as crazy.

Treat an evil alter ego or persona as another personality.

Painting alters or alter equivalent characters as evil.

That shit isn't for your singlet characters and it definitely isn't for your "crazed" or "violent" characters, and alters deserve to be treated kindly.

There is some media I am uncomfortable with and I will block you if your F/Os are from these sources: SAO (sword-art-online), R/ayman, J/ekyll and H/yde, and H/arry P/otter. (These medias make me uncomfortable for one reason or another it's not always for moral reasons, please respect that even if you don't understand).

lrb op is a hockey rpf blog so i really don't care about their opinions on this matter but i spend a lot of time in jp fandom spaces not like on purpose or anything twt just understands i retweet a lot of fanart and shoves more at me. anyways that being said i am exposed a lot to ppl complaining about reversing ships (such as, tagging something as topbottom but the artwork has the bottom character topping. this post is made under the assumption you understand how ship naming conventions work) and sometimes people are like i block if you reverse or i block if you like bottomtop instead of topbottom which is fine and a correct usage of block feature but it is always so... weird to me that people care this deeply about if a character tops or not to the point that it can ruin their day. honestly, it's not that big of a deal. i think both sides take it too seriously. I think most of the complaints is the misuse of ship tagging because the top/bottom order of ship names was invented because some people give too much of a shit about it. idk where i was going about this. i think it just intrigues me it's that serious to people, but i also don't think picking on them for it is the correct answer either.

EU’s proposed Chat Control law has become a bone of contention between members of the bloc. First proposed by the European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson in May 2022 as part of bloc’s push to combat child sexual abuse online, the framework of the bill has now come under fire, earning itself a derisive term “Chat Control”. 

France, Germany and Poland have particularly refused to accept a clause that allows for mass scanning of private messages by breaking end-to-end encryption. Some tech companies, along with trade associations, and privacy experts have all vehemently opposed the regulation. 

On the other hand, Interior Ministers of Spain and Ireland have supported the proposal. Separately, a network of organisations and individuals, advocating for children’s rights in Europe, have lashed out at EU leaders for failing to tackle child sexual abuse online. 

What are the concerns of those against the proposal?

Scanning end-to-end encrypted messages has remained a controversial issue. That’s because there is no way to do this without opening risky backdoors that can be accessed by third parties who can exploit the vulnerability, in turn ending the promise of end-to-end encryption.

Tech firms that treaded the encryption bypassing path have have often been made to retreat. In 2021, Apple announced NeuralHash, a feature that could automatically scan iCloud photo libraries of individual devices for child sexual abuse material, or CSAM. Employees and activist groups expressed concerns over the loss of privacy. A year later, Apple said it had abandoned the initiative. 

Another looming issue the iPhone maker recognised in the process was how authoritarian governments could potentially misuse the feature by using it as a tool to target individuals who oppose the regime.

Erik Neuenschwander, Director of user privacy and child safety at Apple, admitted this in a note saying, “It would […] inject the potential for a slippery slope of unintended consequences. Scanning for one type of content, for instance, opens the door for bulk surveillance and could create a desire to search other encrypted messaging systems across content types.” 

When brining in a similar clause through the UK’s Online Safety Bill, lawmakers attempted to make way for client-side scanning of private and encrypted messages. The proposal was postponed after receiving pushback from encrypted messaging app owners like WhatsApp and Signal. The duo threatened to leave the UK if such a law was passed. In its final stages, in September, 2023, the House of Lords considered the potential security threat that the clause would bring saying it would not implement scanning until it was “technically feasible.” 

What is the status of EU’s Chat Control law?

On June 30, a new draft of the proposal is set to be be reviewed. Legislators have now left the idea of scanning text messages and audio, and are instead targetting shared photos, videos and URLs with an adjustment to appease the naysayers. 

Another tweak in the making could be people’s consent in sharing material being scanned before being encrypted. But this compromise has been largely called out as a farcical one. A report by Euractiv which has been confirmed by internal documents show that if a user refuses the scanning, they will simply be blocked from sending or receiving images, videos and links hardly leaving them with a choice.

Despite these measures, EU’s enforcement of such regulations have seen exemptions to the rule. In November 2023, the European Commission reportedly published a proposal to amend the regulation on a temporary derogation of the E-Privacy Directive against CSAM. Under the regulation, specific online communications service providers were allowed to sift through or scan messages to detect, report and remove online child sexual abuse material or CSAM and content that solicits children. The regulation is set to expire in early August . The initial plan on the table was to simply extend this regulation for another three years. But, according to media reports, plans for further extensions were stalled in February this year.

Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal app called the measures to assuage concerns as “cosmetic”, and has signed a joint statement along with a group of over 60 other organisations like Mozilla, Proton, Surfshark and Tuta, voicing out her concerns. Whittaker has echoed her earlier warning saying Signal will leave the UK rather than undermine end-to-end encryption. 

A blog, co-authored by Riana Pfefferkorn, a research scholar at the Stanford Internet Observatory and Callum Voge, director of government affairs and advocacy at the Internet Society, notes, ”If government surveillance is a concern in an established democratic entity like the EU, what hope is there for beleaguered democracies like Turkey, India and Brazil, much less autocracies?”
