Mod Erhardt Intro Post

Hello! 

I am your Mod Erhardt, and I’d love to welcome you to Octopath Exchange!  I suppose it would behoove you know a little about me, no?

I have been writing fanfiction for roughly 17 years across a wide range of fandoms, from obscure anime (Samurai 7) to popular movies (Star Wars).  My largest collection of work is in the TV show Danny Phantom.  That being said, my work from 2002 is...less than stellar, so if you choose to look at my collection, please look at anything from 2008 and onward.  My longest work is around 200k words.  I am generally more active on fanfiction.net because, well, I started there and am a creature of habit.  My username there is Ryuuko1. Now that you have my general background, here is a little more pertinent information: My favorite main character is Cyrus.  Oh, Cyrus, my sweet, sweet, oblivious academic.  I like to think we would get along well in real life; at the very least, I would enjoy talking long into the night about esoteric crap that has no real bearing on actual life but is fun as hell to learn about.  Olberic comes in a close second. My favorite non-main character is Erhardt.  He’s so complicated and fascinating and actually really human as a character. My favorite of the characters’ tales is Therion’s.  The plot arc and character development is just perfect. My favorite character musical theme is Cyrus’ because it is a waltz and pretentious and beautiful.    My primary ship is Olberic and Erhardt.  Always and forever.  My gods, the entire time they were on screen with each other in chapters three and four...I just died.  I do favor H’aanit/Ophilia, too. I am writing fanfiction for Octopath Traveler, and it is currently being posted on AO3.  It is Olberic and Olberhardt-centric because I love them.  I believe Mod Therion gave a link to my profile there somewhere below. As I am currently working and taking night classes at school, I will be the less responsive between me and Mod Therion, but any questions directed at me in particular will always be answered.

i havent participated in exchanges before so im not aware of a lot of things, can you explain what it means for our works to go live and how creators are revealed? ive also made a speed paint out of my piece should i upload it as a private video and link it in the ao3 submission and make it go live on the 11th?

Hail, Traveler.

Your questions have their answers in the back end of how the Collection on AO3 is run.  

A work is “live” when it is fully accessible to anyone and everyone who would want to view what you have crafted. Right now, any work that is posted to the Collection does not appear and is not searchable on AO3.  Mod Therion and I have a button that triggers an event wherein all works posted to the Collection will be viewable on AO3; that will occur on August 7th.    

Upon being available on AO3 on August 7, all the Creators will be listed as “Anonymous.”  Mod Therion and I have another button that, upon activation on August 11, will change the creator from “Anonymous” to the handle of the person who crafted the work.  We like there being a bit of mystery for a few days before people know who actually created the piece for them.

It is great that you made a speed paint video!  I’m sure that your giftee will be absolutely thrilled.  Please do feel free to link it in the AO3 submission.  If the hyperlink would reveal who you are and you wish to keep the suspense, then you can certainly make the video private until August 11th when names are revealed.  That much we leave up to you.

Blank Letter Template!

So some of you might be a little daunted by creating letters especially if this is your first exchange, so we decided to create a template, feel free to use it or adapt it as you like it! If you do write a letter, once it’s posted let us know by @-ing us with the link to your letter and we’ll add it to this spreadsheet where everyone can see your letter and hey you might even get an extra gift! 

Letters are completely optional, please don’t feel pressure to include them we just want everyone to have fun ❤️

As we mentioned this exchange is open to ship-y fics and gen fics, but remember, your creator is only obligated to to use one of the characters you requested so you may not get a ship-y gift. 

Now, without further ado! Here’s a potential blank-ish generalized template I adapted from one of my old letters. You can adapt to yours own needs or heck throw it out and do your own cool thing!

Typically what I like to do is a little intro and a sort of thank you in advance to my creator

Letter Intro: You can introduce yourself, your socials and a thank you to your creator if you wish!

Listing Likes: Typically this list is stuff that is fairly similar to DNWs. It can be a little overview or just a simple list of elements, themes and tropes that you enjoy seeing in art and fic: 

AUs! No, seriously, every kind of AU go wild! Humor! Especially: sarcasm, witty banter, etc… Happy Endings! Listing DNWs: I also re-list my DNWs from my sign-up sheet here, just in case—and I hate to sound like a broken record but I just don’t want anyone to be surprised—we will only enforce DNWs on your sign-up form so if you have any please make sure to list them there as well.

Prompts: You can go a nuts here, after all these are just some prompts/suggestions that your creator might want to have just so they can get some more insight on what you really like. Especially when they go along with general settings, specific characters, platonic relationships and/or your favorite ships. 

At the end of my letters I always reiterate that I genuinely don’t mind if my creator doesn’t do any of my prompts because, I don’t want them to feel limited in anyway. I just like giving prompts because I like getting them. I have gotten stuck on exchanges and my giftee’s letter has saved my life by giving me a jumping off point/a cute idea I wouldn’t have thought of. There was a year in yuletide where I got a giftee who had no DNWs listed, no preferences, no prompts and their ask box wasn’t open, it was an interesting year.

Dear Creator Letters

What are they? 

Dear Creator letters are a completely optional step in the exchange--it is not required, it is not necessary, it is merely there to help.  In it, you can write what you enjoy about the characters that you’re requesting, what themes and tropes you die for, potential prompts, etc., anything that may make the creation of your exchange work easier.  You could also list your Do Not Wants here, but we will only enforce DNWs on the actual sign-up form.  These examples are only guidelines, however; feel free to include anything in the Dear Creator letters that you think may prove useful--many creators do read through the letters to look for optional extras that they can slip into the exchange work.

Where do they go?

The letters can be posted on LJ, tumblr, pillowfort, etc., pick your platform of choice.  They are not sent to individual creators in particular.

What does a letter look like?

Mod Therion has an example of a “Dear Creator” letter that was used during a previous exchange that can be provided to you as an example.  Additionally, you can create a letter of your own, or we could come up with a new template.

Hey There, 

I am your Mod Therion, and have some modding experience through Seroroki Week (BnHA). I have participated in 3 Ao3 Yuletides and (once again) a BnHA Rare Pair gift exchange and those are what this exchange is modeled after. 

I have been writing fanfiction for small fandoms and big fandoms alike my FF.net will go with me to my grave, but my Ao3 is Nightmoonz and my Tumblr is Moonwolfhowl.

My favorite main—who I did in fact main—is lol you guessed it Therion! My god I love this little shit with my whole heart and would gladly die for him. As Mod Erhardt mentioned his plot arc is stellar and ultimately that’s what drew me to him. He had so much against him (and had imo one of the most tragic backstories) but in spite of that he was able to trust people again.(Runner-up for my fav is Tressa who like Therion I would gladly die for. I love them so much, and they deserve the world.) 

My favorite non-main character is Leon Bastralle cuz let’s face it who doesn’t love a pirate? Also his bettering himself in memory of Baltazar, who he loved and respected, who taught him how to find treasure in everything ; _ ; my heart.

 My primary ship(s) are probably on the rare pair spectrum (this is why I am so happy I’m a multishipper). That being said I think my top fav ships that currently own my heart are: Tressa x Leon, Thordelia, OLBERHARDT omg, and H’aanit/Ophilia ; w ; (there are so many honorable mentions, but I already gave you four)

I’ll will get back to any and all questions as soon as possible but please be patient in the response time as I have a full time job and I may be in a different time zone

Hello, I'm super-excited for this exchange, but I've noticed a few sign-ups that ask for any characters (out of 90+ possibilities) but then only specify a handful of characters in the optional details. Is that allowed?

Hi there, thank you for your ask! 

We’ve reached out to those who needed a bit of clarification over the “Any Character” option, but wanted to make sure that everyone understands exactly what the “Any Character” option entails.

If you would like to receive a gift featuring a specific character(s) from the Octopath Universe, we strongly recommend entering them into your character roster rather than selecting the “Any Character” option in your official sign-up form.

This is because if you choose the “Any Character” option in the “Request” field, you’re indicating that you are open to receiving a work with “Any” character(s) from the Octopath Universe.

For example: If you would really love getting a gift featuring Harald and Reggie but you selected “Any,” then there is no guarantee that you will get a gift featuring either of them. You may even ending up receiving a gift without either Reggie and Harald, even if you list them in your “optional details” box or letter. The only thing that we will be enforcing on your optional details box are your DNWs.

Similarly, selecting the “Any Characters” option on the “Offers” section of your form indicates that you’re okay with creating a work that features “Any” character—From the God Aeber to Alfyn’s bestie Zeph—in the Octopath Universe.

We’re making sure this is as clear as possible because we’re so happy to have you all participating, and we want to make sure you have a fun and enjoyable experience.
