Hi! I'm a Minecraft modder, and I can explain
You mentioned slimefun, which is a spigot plugin, so I'm assuming you're using a bukkit derivative
Bukkit and it's derivatives are *super old*, with the first CraftBukkit versions being in beta Minecraft.
Bukkit and derivative servers try to keep backwards compatibility with their APIs, so something you write on, say, 1.8, will likely run on recent versions
This causes an issue as Mojang makes more and more changes to Minecraft's codebase (1.13's "the flattening", 1.18's worldgen overhaul, etc)
So the maintainers of the server software need to choose between keeping compatibility with old plugins or removing broken APIs. Most of the time they choose the former.
This has lead to a very big compatibility gap and general instability that can cause problems if not treated carefully.
An ever-growing alternative to Bukkit derivatives is the server-side Fabric and Quilt ecosystems. (Henceforth referred to as "fabriquilt")
Fabriquilt has the advantage of being newer, so they've seen the issues with older mod/plugin systems and addressed them in some way, the biggest thing being the separation of Loader and API.
If Minecraft makes a change that breaks one of the APIs, it's much easier to change or outright remove that API than it is for Bukkit derivatives.
If you ever need any functionality that isn't provided by any current mod, there's always someone willing to take on a commission! (Including me, sometimes)
For those who don鈥檛 know, I am the technical admin for a Minecraft server. Now I have slightly above average skills with computers, but nothing to call home about, since computers generally act weird around me. That said I was the best equipped for it so me and @the-seelie-court-official started it up together, me for technical stuff and Dion for community stuff.
Now let me tell you about the Haunting on the Minecraft server.
One of the things I wanted to set up was NPC shop keeps. Now these shop keeps look like players, and I can code them to type in chat and to walk around, but they aren鈥檛 players. They aren鈥檛 counted in the server list, they only say the words I鈥檝e given them. One of these Npcs was Herb, the Herbalist. They sold plants.
This was their skin, by the way.
Now one day herb stopped talking, this was odd so I tried to select them, like I had done so many times before, but it wouldn鈥檛 work. Whenever I tried I was met with error messages. I couldn鈥檛 select them, so I couldn鈥檛 delete them, I couldn鈥檛 move them, they had cut their strings and I the puppet master was forced to place an end portal beneath them and drop them into the void.
I thought this would be the last of it.
Fast forward a couple months and the server is up and running for public use. The players got into the end to find the end dragon missing, and upon building out to make an enderman farm we found herb. They were hovering, in the void. Easily accessible, I still couldn鈥檛 select them to change them or edit them so we just let them stay, floating above the yawning void that was meant to get rid of them.
Over time the server got more and more glitchy, chunks were being loaded by the thousand with only one or two people on at a time. After some serious sleuthing we (me and my team) found that the server recognized a ghost player. One that wasn鈥檛 listed when you pressed Tab, but was listed on the server side. The console of the server was filled with error messages almost constantly, cascading errors of Null, of Not Found despite the fact herb was right there.
Eventually it came to a head, the corn plants and slimefun crops went Wrong. Corrupted just like herb. And with fields of Steve heads staring back from what should be a farm we agreed that we would completely delete the world. The world that herb was in, that whole dimension. In hopes it would finally get rid of them.
We thought it worked, that we had finally be rid ourselves of this beast of my own creation. An hour later Herb Appeared at the world spawn. As if nothing had happened.
Finally I had to resort to burying them in a bedrock box directly under world spawn, because while I couldn鈥檛 move them I could break the blocks under them to make them fall. They sit down there trapped, vomiting error messages any time they are looked at or touched. Waiting for the chance to destroy what we have built.

hey im planning to switch over to linux and need advice from the smart people of tumblr, please and thank you. my messages are open so if you need any info to help me out hmu.
General Questions:
im seeing everyone saying ubuntu, mint, and ziron are "the #1 go to versions for beginners" but like... which is it?
i also hear about security being the best with linux but nothing about it coming with antiviruses. does it come with one like how windows comes with defender or do you install that yourself, or is it something different entirely?
all the sources i look at talk about downloading and installing linux but i want to know what to expect when first getting a prebuilt pc with the OS, like the system 76 pcs. do you have to set it up like when you install it or is it as easy as getting any new computer?
i know nothing about coding and im planning to get a computer from system 76 since it seems like the best, and its by far the only source that only comes with linux, and since my current one was pretty much ruined by someone i thought could fix it after a faulty outlet fried its insides, he didnt and made it worse.
so yeah, which linux version do you suggest for a computer moron, any suggestions for computers would be nice (max price is $1,300), i'll put the specs and my uses under the read more.
Preferences:
It ONLY comes with Linux. I despise what Windows has become and don't want to even bother dual booting cause I feel with the switchovers happening they're gonna get salty and make something that'll turn your computer into a bomb if you use Linux with it.
Kinda beefy but not a supercomputer. I don't use AI stuff, I'm not a programmer, but I do frequently play modded Minecraft with my friends and run smps for my Discord servers. I recently switched to Modrinth cause ATLauncher had been giving me trouble. Curseforge is out of the question.
At the most, I'll be playing VRChat with friends while having Spotify or Youtube in the background for music and Discord open in case someone needs my help in one of my servers, similar goes for running one of my SMPs just minus the VR.
Gaming Questions:
I also play VR games often, especially BeatSaber (modded ofc im not insane), and I have Half Life Alyx that I haven't been able to finish cause my already dead and gutted PC struggles to run it anymore even with the lowest settings. My current headset is a two feet in the grave, barely hanging in there, held by tape Oculus Rift S thats as old as my current PC whos also dead. I plan to get a new headset soon and had the Quest 2 recommended to me by friends. If theres better alternatives that isn't Meta please let me know.
I'm a DBD addict. Does it really run DBD or was that just the one guy from the one video I saw.
My friends also often drag me onto Roblox so I need to know if that'll be an option for Linux too.
I know I could probably look up all this myself but every source is outdated from years ago or they all say different things and it just confuses me.
Art Questions:
My current tablet is a Wacom, I got it before knowing how greedy the company actually is, and I plan to switch to a Huion after this tablet dies on me. If compatibility is an issue with it please let me know what to do about that.
I usually use Medibang but I don't think it runs on Linux from what I've seen, if I'm wrong lemme know. Am I going to have to switch all the files over to something else before getting a Linux or are there programs I can use that'll load them?
I also write and need to know if I need to switch all my files to something else before porting it all over to the Linux PC. I just used the default notepad and document programs on Windows.
But yeah, that's all my questions for now. If I think of any more I'll just edit this post. Sorry if I sound super dumb for all this, I tried finding information sources myself but like I said all of them weren't too moron friendly or had relevant information. Most sources I found were articles or reddit forums from years ago so I thought "Hey, why don't I just go ask the computer nerds directly?" so here I am.

Looking for players interested in Building and Adventuring! ive recently set up a somewhat lightly modded minecraft server using a custom map for the Terrain rather than a mod. The server is open to all, more info can be found on our discord here
the server is using the fabulously optimized modpack from the modrinth launcher along with a few other mods to enhance travel and gameplay. if exploring the vast landscape gets boring theres places amongst the stars to travel to as with the mod, Ad Astra.
the gorgeous landscape of the server has Numerous wonderful places to settle down and build empires or cities of all sorts. all of these lovely veiws are thanks to The Sixth Realm, made by Honest Soul.
due to the whopping size of the world(20k by 20k) waystones have been placed about the world near some lovely spots for newcomers to start at. as the server grows (and i get around to it) the currently waystones will be shifted around to player settlements only. this will be to encourage players to travel and explore via boat or horseback. both have been enhanced with mods

Hi, I really like your art, just wanted to say that
I was also wondering if you have any art tips, I'm trying to get better but am struggling a bit
Also, you don't have to answer this, but what modpack do you use in the minecraft posts? I was interested in playing it but couldn't find it
have a fantastic time wherever you are!
okay, like most things, i think the best way to improve in art is to just practice as close to everyday. doesn't have to be anything big, but even a five min sketch or practicing some fundamentals helps a LOT.
But besides just plain practicing, i found at a certain point i need to be conscious about what i'm practicing. analyzing my own art for my weak points / what i wanna improve on and then dedicating a week of studies to that thing. i think a big thing isn't just blindly repeating the same thing but actively trying to push yourself forwards.
Another thing is that I started really drawing because I just liked an anime series and wanted to draw them, which meant for a while I was just imitating a style without a good understanding of the fundamentals of art. so one thing i'd also recommend is making sure you do study the fundamentals. it's sorta like in calculus where sure you can take a derivative if you know the rules but you should also understand what a derivative is and where those rules come from. if that makes sense. while i was on my little "re-learning art" stint back in like 2023, i used this playlist!
But generally speaking, i think just trying to have fun with what you're drawing is the most important. i had spikes of improvement when i got super attached to a character and just drew that character everyday lol. at least for me i tended to improve more when i was actually having fun drawing. yeah :D
I guess to recap: 1. practicing often (even if it鈥檚 just something tiny) 2. make sure you鈥檝e learned all your basic fundamentals (shape, value, perspective, etc). it鈥檚 boring but it helps in the long run. 3. analyze your art, figure out what specific thing you want to improve on, then study it. 4. and most importantly, enjoying what you鈥檙e drawing :) i always see the most improvement when i鈥檓 just genuinely enjoying the subjects i鈥檓 drawing.
i'm not the world's best artist by far but yeah :D as for the mods, i鈥檓 not really using a specific big mod pack, it's just a couple of mods from a pack my partner made for a separate server that I tweaked a lil. I also don't know a lottt about modding so uh.
i'm using 1.20.1 and fabric 0.16.9, here's a google drive folder with a download for my modrinth profile and also a google doc with a list of all the mods. But for the stuff you see often in my posts: i'm using an mc dungeons weapons mod for all the cool weapons and customizable elytras for the elytra colors & trim.

my hot take is that the minecraft community started going downhill when people decided the best way to play the game is to have it basically play itself. i dont want 5 automatic diamond farms and 30 beacons i want to make a warship that doesn't actually move and a space station in the end and a little cafe thats ran by a fletcher villager for some reason. hell yeah give me a weird little guy ill put him in my colusseum of which me and my friends are the only spectators
now the fans get mad if mojang doesn't add 3 new biomes and a mob that revolutionizes redstone and 5 new bosses and a new dimension and an item that changes the entire pvp meta and a mob that goes and hunts down every resource that you cant infinitely farm without touching your keyboard for you every single update. you don't want minecraft dipshit you want cookie clicker
its not like this game is subscription based or anything either you buy it once for 20 dollars and then you have it for as long as you have access to your email address. this isnt like pokemon where they're selling what might as well be ps2 titles at this point for 60 dollars every year that get rid of features the previous games had. "but the marketplace" modrinth is right there "but realms" aternos is right there. theyre not doing anything to shut down either of these services. any other microsoft property would (metaphorically) kill your firstborn in front of you right then and there if you dared to host your own servers. why does java even have realms again no seriously what does it even do
anyway rant over if youre getting genuinely upset over trees in the funny block game please do literally anything else this isnt healthy

Update for the Tricksy Foxes mod!
Version 4.1 fixes a critical bug that prevented the combat nodes from working (a bug that somehow was entirely unreported for the past year!), adds a couple new search-type nodes to make farming automation easier, and adds a server config option to disabled Prescient Candle logging to reduce server performance impacts.
Go forth and stabby!

Last Monday of the Week 2024-09-09
It was Bandcamp Friday last friday so those go up front:
Listening: First up God's Country by Chat Pile which I cannot remember why I found it but is extremely noisy metal. Blunt, to the point.
A Dog A Deer A Seal by Hit Bargain has featured on a Monday before but now I actually bought the album, here's the title track. Very modern-style rock.
The Envoy by Gavlina Rayna Russom, her first solo album after leaving LCD Soundsystem, soundscape electronic and voice based on The Left Hand of Darkness.
Cyberspace Database by Fornax Void, sort of the evil mirror dimension version of Businessfunk which now that I think about it has never come up on here? Incredible. Anyway a sort of fantasy soundscape for a cyberspace environment. Huge album too, like 50 songs.
Alright back to our regularly scheduled programming
Watching: New! Dynamo! Dreams! from Ian Hubert,
youtube
This is the first time we're back at what was started in Ep1 so there is in fact some kind of plot, although the series remains supremely vibes-based. Excellent extensive rampaging robotaxi sequence. Dynamo Dreams is mostly about the props and atmosphere.
Reading: Finished The Tyrant Baru Cormorant after a brief lapse in reading. It's got problems! I really like a lot of it but it keeps on pausing the book to tell us about the blogs and wikipedia pages Seth Dickinson has been reading. Have you heard of Euler's Formula? What about the evolutionary argument for homosexuality? Yo did you hear about plants that avert scurvy? I am going to tell you about these in a boringly straightforward didactic way for the next 200 pages while occasionally progressing the plot.
Things I like: There is a very real sense of trying to balance everyone's schemes. Despite the fantasy communication techniques there's a lot of hidden information that gets used well, and the vibe of Baru's person-blindness is felt heavily but by anyone trying to make a plan run smoothly. Baru gets so messed up over the course of these books and it works to demonstrate how she's taking herself to pieces to make this work.
When Baru is actually doing her thing you can ignore the sort of awkward frankensteined nature of the world around her, but when explicit attention is drawn to it it quickly starts to fall apart, and the introduction of the Lightning Cult has me worried that this will only get more severe. Seth Dickinson seemingly cannot do Greg Egan, but they can do the rest of the Baru Cormorant pretty solidly.
Also more Skin Horse. Only to about 2012 so far.
Making: Some abortive soldering projects, hampered by my lack of good quality solder, I only have pure tin/copper blend in pretty coarse gauge, you want something finer and with a little silver for this.
Started working through some Control Theory lectures to brush up on that because I'm also working through some ROS tutorials, I want to make my robotics projects more broadly useful and integrating ROS/microROS might go a long way to helping that.
Playing: Ash and Adam's Gobsmacked, an early access roguelite arena combat goblin game that came out recently. Big focus on mobility, you can run and jump and glide around levels while taking out a bunch of robots. Still pretty finicky, controls are on the slippier side so on the plus side "high skill ceiling" but also "uncontrollable".
A touch of Minecraft, poking at Modrinth mod manager rather than my usual manual mod installation because I was unwilling to spend time figuring out how some of the new mods interact. I really do want to stick with a world long enough to do something interesting sometime.
Tools and Equipment: I set up Tailscale to link my server with my devices when they're in the field, using a headscale node running on my cloud server. It's really nice once you have all the basics sorted out, works smoothly. Worth a look if you want to securely access your home network while on the go.

The Good, the Bad, and the Rowdy: D&D Origins Version 1.1.0
This update features several major additions and changes, most notably:
Added the Aasimar race (the good).
Added Tiefling sub-races (the bad).
Added the Kobold race (the rowdy).
Added the Artificer class.
Created a "single-player" version.
Check the version release notes on GitHub for more information: [Main] [Single-Player]
What does "Single-Player" mean in this context?
Good question! The only content of the pack affected in this version is the Artificer and the Wizard; in the main version of the pack, the Infusions you can learn as an Artificer are divided up into different specializations, and the spells you can learn as a Wizard are divided up and made exclusive to various schools of magic, limiting the total number of infusions/enchantments you can learn to encourage diversity within any given server, and to keep any one player from becoming too overpowered. In the single-player version of the pack, this specialization/school division does not exist, and any one Artificer can learn any and all Infusions, while any one Wizard can learn any and all enchantments! While this change is intended to enchance the single-player Artificer/Wizard experience, this doesn't mean this version of the pack must be exclusively used in single-player servers; it's just up to the server admins and their priorities for their players.
