What TES Languages Sound Like

Modern Cyrodiilic: Romance Polish isn't real, it can't hurt you! Basically Venedic/Wenedyk. Figured with the Slavic names (skinGRAD, riSLAV the righteous, etc) combined with the Roman aesthetic, it made the most sense. Despite the evolution of the language, many patrician/noble families, especially those of the Elder Council and Imperial Dynasty, still carry the Classical Cyrodiilic "Praenymic, Nymic, Cognymic" naming pattern.

Old Cyrodiilic: Classical Latin, with bits of Quenya/Sindarin carried over from Ayleidoon

Nordic: Old Norse, with bits of Lithuanian and Tibetan for flair (see Project Tamriel: SHotN)

Khajiiti: Romanian-Spanish-esque language

Al(t/d)meris: Sanskrit-esque alien language, with bits of Quenya/Sindarin to tie them back to the DnD / Tolkien elves that inspired them

Dunmeris: Imagine Hindi, but Australian.

packs can consist of 6-20 members though the average is thought to be around 10

there is usually 2 main wolves, sometimes known as alphas but that terms outdated, these are usually the main parents and give birth to most of the pack

a litter usually consists of 4-6 pups and they are all born blind and vulnerable and they usually stay in the den and with their mother for about 2 years

older siblings have been known to look after younger siblings if needed

the packs social bond is very strong and have fierce devotion to their pack. they have been known to mourn loss, which is what a lone howl usually is, they have also been seen to sacrifice themselves for their pack

vocalisation:

every pack as its own unique howl to distinguish different packs and if they are on someone else's territory

a defensive howl is to keep the pack together and keep predators out of their territory

a social howl is to locate one another

barking, though rare, is used as a warning for example a mother wolf may bark of she senses danger around her pups

whimpering and whining can indicate a "i give up/in"

growling is also used as a warning but for more dominance like protecting their territory

body language and posture:

a wolf interacting with it pack can say lots about the status of the wolf and the pack

less dominant wolves usually crouch to make themselves look more smaller

they also lick the muzzles of more dominant wolves

slinking is another "i give in" and is a more submissive behaviour and is show in fights and disagreements with the pack

dominant wolves usually have a more confident upright posture to show said dominance

they also rest their head on submissive wolves neck or back

facial expressions:

when angry their ears stick upright and they bear their teeth for example when two wolves have a disagreement they will show this and growl

when suspicious they squint their eyes and put their ears back

when in fear they flatten their ears

when they want to play they display the play bow and dance around

as a warning they will curl the end of their lips displaying a bit of teeth

when relaxed their eyes are just on their sides

tail position:

tail tucking is a sign of being in fear and submission

a more dominant tail position is sticking it out and slightly upward

a neutral tail position is wagging

scent marking

they mark their territory with pheromones

these pheromones come out from glands on the toes, tail, eyes, skin and genitalia

there are 2 types of submission: active and passive

active submission: is where a wolf shows signs of inferiority like tail tucking, muzzle licking and crouching (pups do this with adults)

passive submission: passive submissions is when a wolf lays on its back or side displaying the stomach or chest which is a vulnerable part of the body because it contains vital organs it is show to more dominant wolves when they get into a disagreement the less dominant one usually gives up and shows passive submission to show the others authority

playing:

they are known to get zoomies like how domestic dogs do

some games they play include: chase, tug of war or jaw sparring

jaw sparring is when two wolves will rear up on their hind legs and use their front paws and jaws

a range of vocals come out when playing this this fortifies bonds and status and shows physical skills

a more casual version of this is then laying down

wolves don't hibernate at all so they can be seen all year around

the biggest pack ever consisted of 400 wolves which was found in the outskirts of the woods in russia (i made a post abt then when i got 400 followers)

With old Germanic attire, since they seem pretty much german so I think this ones kinda obvious. I also gave ehm some fisher tribe vibes since Grünwald is next to a river, I think.

Raban and Deniz

For Raban I was obligated to do Celtic wear because obviously he‘s a redhead and I bet there is some Irish blood in him. And without a doubt, Deniz is of course in some rich turkish attire^^

Vanessa and Jojo

Both of them based on the northern cultures. Vanessa has the iconic slavic attire, originally wanted to give her those patterned dresses but tbh it‘s too much detail and she looks hot in men wear. Jojo is in finnish folk clothing cuz I do feel like he‘s pretty resistant to cold ( I mean he spent some time in the forest at night) so I think finnish culture might fit him well.

Kong and Markus

First off Markus, I kinda thought maybe japanese culture might fit but from the glimpses of his mother made me kinda think he might be of taiwanese ethnicity? So I just went with that one and I think it looks neat! Now for Kong I would‘ve naturally done Chinese attire, but thinking back on his looks and nature he definitely fits better in a Mongolian worrior attire.

I've seen people say that saber-toothed cats couldn't roar because only Panthera felids can today. But if other large carnivorans like bears and pinnipeds could evolve the ability to roar independently, I don't see why saber-toothed cats would be any different. (Even if it would've sounded different from their modern cousins.)

"Roar" is so vaguely defined a term as to be almost nonscientific. What people mean when they say "saber-toothed cats couldn't roar" is referring to a specific vocalization in big cats - this deep, long-distance territorial call. It has a distinct pattern in each species, and between individuals:

These cats have two specializations that make them able to do this. First, they have an incompletely ossified hyoid - the epihyoid is replaced by a ligament. This allows for the larynx to retract deeper into the throat, making the vocalizations deeper and louder. Incidentally, this also means that they can't purr like small cats do. The second adaptation is that the vocal folds within the larynx are really thick, which lowers the pitch even further.

Snow leopards have an incompletely ossified hyoid (which means they can't purr), but they don't have the thickened vocal folds. They make the exact same long-distance territorial call as the other members of Panthera, but it instead sounds like this:

Clouded leopards have neither of these specializations, and they basically just meow like a small cat:

So what of saber-toothed cats? Hyoid elements are known from Smilodon. Their shape resembles those of small cats, implying that the larynx itself had a similar morphology (i.e., without the thick vocal folds of big cats). However, the hyoids are also significantly bigger than those of any living cats - including big cats. This implies that the larynx itself was proportionally bigger, and that would mean a deeper pitch to the vocalizations. No modern cat has a disproportionately increased larynx like that, but male Mongolian gazelles and hammer-headed bats have larynxes at least twice the size of the females', and consequently make deeper calls (unfortunately I couldn't find good recordings of either online). The fact that Smilodon is also just larger animal would mean its vocalizations would be deeper than those of small cats anyways. However, the lack of laryngeal specializations means that it may not have had the same deep formant frequencies as big cats; this means the sound would have been less resonant and maybe not able to travel as far.

So basically, Smilodon may have been able to "roar", but not the same roar as modern big cats. Rather, it'd be like the calls of small cats, but much deeper in pitch. A baritone meow, if you will.

How do you imagine Queen Daenerys style evolution to be? From Essosi influences to slowly accomodate or create a new style?

I don't think Dany grew up with a particular style, due to being on the run and just wearing whatever she was given by her current host. But when she gets married, she has to wear the Mongolian-inspired garb I headcanon for the Dothraki. For ceremonies and formal gatherings, she wears a heavy and embroidered gown that's hard to move in, along with a horse hair headdress that makes her neck hurt. For more casual days, she wears comfortable leather pants and cotton wrapped robes, finely crafted for her status as Khaleesi. Once Drogo dies and she goes on the worst roadtrip of all time, her once fine clothing has deteriorated to filthy rags in the Red Wastes' heat.

Dany's Qarth fashions are once again her being dressed up by whoever her host is, with no real identity through her clothing. Hm this might be an ongoing theme. My late Roman Republic inspired Qarth how I love you. Long, loose, simply shaped gowns made of thinner material that kept the heat out and a breeze flowing. Delicate crowns and headpieces, with long veils she drapes around her shoulders and waist. So so so many colors and different patterns that keep Dany feeling like a peacock as she is paraded around.

Unfortunately I have lots of ideas about the slaver cities and their clothing, but they include the blending of multiple real life cultures, so there are no actual costumes to go off of, just cool art that I hope u mush together in ur mind :] But for Dany's arrival at Astapor, Yunkai, and Mereen, I think about a combination of ancient middle eastern cultures like Babylonia, Assyria, and ancient Egypt (though I am unfortunately not as well versed in their clothing histories as some other cultures). Dress here is far more complex than in Qarth, with multiple gowns and pieces of clothing wrapped around and tucked into one another, with decorated belts and fringed draperies and heavy jewelry. Dany often feels like she's drowning in it, but is determined to absorb herself into their culture.

And cut to if we ever get Winds and Dany sails for Westeros wearing a combination of the styles she has worn over the years, leather pants and linen tunics and short wrapped gowns, as an accumulation of everything she's learned, but this time she is confident and sure of herself :] though that's just a pipe dream George please release wi

Been trying to be more Talky on here because twt sucks and I miss Blogging so I’m gonna talk thru some design WIPS

Working on the winx au- trying to establish Eraklyon vibes. Current criteria is a more cool-temperate climate, inspiration pulled from late medieval/renaissance shapes, as well as certain periods of Kimono and hanbok, scattered Mongolian - the most important thing here is the sense of everything being big and heavy and opulent.

Here is a pass on Queen Samara, trying to reference her canon colors

Going for big and squarish prints and quite showy colors. The crown is somewhat inspired by her canon one but I wanted to make it look more like swept back antlers. My problems with this is that although I’m theming Eraklyon around precious gems, the theme is less light and bright than say-Solaria. I want a vibe of deep colors and mountains and stone. The brightness of this definitely puts it in a fantastical slot, but I’m also worried it almost looks too much like Just a pseudo-ren faire esque costume.

This next pass I decided I wanted to take my colors from some architectural references-actually baroque marble floors with a busy mix of stone in white, black, green, orange, gold. I also more overtly mixed in elements from more of my Asian references. I feel like this could work on Eraklyon, but worn by someone from one of the more Asian inspired culture groups -or maybe Samara could wear it for an occasion, but it’s not what I’m looking for for her default look.

I reworked the original sketch with the architecturally inspired patterns. I think the darker colors vibe better with what I’m imagining for the setting on Eraklyon, but the patterns are a little outlandish and hint at this design not being for a standard fantasy world. I also made her hair a little bigger, like a fusion of the structured hairstyle from the 2nd and the chunky braid. I think it’s neat.

This is just my first pass on things, trying to pin down the vibe. What do you think?

Silm Fashion - Part 9/? - Amrod & Amras

Yeah, I considered separating the Ambarussar, but I felt like I should not do that.

Also, I know that @peasant-player kindly offered some help due to the actual impossible mission of finding photos of redheads that are not AI (see Maedhros), but girl, my beloved friend, you already have like 15 projects ongoing and it's Christmas, I am NOT giving you more work!

That said, I am probably NOT going to find ANY piture with redheads for the kind of fashions I have in mind for A&A, so I am gonna ask you all to PLEASE imagine and envision the pictures having redheads, ok?

With this out of the way let's start! Under cut!

So, I have the feeling that everyone looked at A&A and collectively decided that they were going to be those cutesy twins who dress the same and talk in tandem with each other - much to the parents' horror. The amount of gift clothes both Feanor and Nerdanel had to modify/return so that a) they could distinguish them and b) they would keep their personalities different was uncountable. The twins had to wear their brothers' hand-me-downs for a while, until both Feanor and Nerdanel had finished modifying/returning ALL of their wardrobes.

In any case, even wih the hand-me-downs, they would style those clothes quite differently - figure Maglor's beautifully embroidered dupattas paired with Celegorm's white shirts and Caranthir's hakamas for one, whilst the other had Maedhros' viking trousers paired with Curufin's jianghu-style shirt.

I am sorry, but I will not be finding any mash-up like that on any picture 😓😭

The "fashion disaster mash up of hand-me-downs" will keep going until they both are in ME and they settle down with the Green Elves (if I remember correctly, poor lads get mentioned a total of 5-6 times in the entire Silm). They need to blend a little bit more, but that doesn't mean that they forsake their heritage. They go for different roads in fashion, because Fea and Nerdie made damn sure that each one of their children had a completely different personalities. A&A included.

So for Amrod I am drawing from Mongolian fashion: furs, silks, flowy/geometric patterns (pls pretend that the guys in the pics have red hair). There's a lot of beading going on and bandanas (no fancy headpieces for him). Feanorian red is there, always. Never forget that he is Feanor's son.

For Amras I am picking from Saami culture (also pls pretend that the two look like redheaded twins). For him there is a lot of Feanorian red going on and also a lot of navy (he adores Maglor's navy outfits in ME). There is of course a lot of beading and also a lot of wool, rather than fur.

Anyway, this is my take, last ones of the Feanorians are done, next ones are the Nolofinweans!

One of the battles in To Guard Against Titans, where Kai Khan and Hunter have one of the shortest, and most intense, conversations of their lives.

I'm sorry, but drawing MCRN light armor from The Expanse is both fun as hell and a pain in the butt.

It's sleek, futuristic, gorgeous, and easily patterned once it's out of fascist hands. Not unlike Star Wars armor!

Kai Khan Petrenko's proud of his mother's Mongolian heritage, an unusual trait amongst Martians, who often have left behind their Earther heritage to focus on Mars. Hence the Soyombo symbol on his armor, his son's name (Tengri: the eternal blue sky, the highest being), the name of his ensign ship (The Orda), and all other little details about him.

He and Hunter fall for each other partially because of this, telling stories of Mars, Mongolia, and Mandalore. The idea that warriors can love each other and their families, their people, as fiercely as they can fight.

And that brings us to their ultimate fate - to either stay together on the burning Orda in battle over Weyland, or to take the remains of the ship in battle and give their other the chance to survive.

Best Sylus Memory Ever!!!!

Oh my gosh, my Central Asian genes were satiated with this memory. And I summoned him on the first pull!

I can't stop raving about how good he looks in this outfit. I instantly recognized the patterns on MC's outfit in the trailer and knew I was pulling for Sylus ;)

There were so many words I recognized, like khan, kumis (which is a drink among nomads, made from horse milk, kind of like alcohol), yurt, and the braids!!! I'm sure this memory was culturally based on Mongolian tribes, and since most Central Asians were nomadic, there are many things I recognize from this memory. So happy!!!

a little info thing i made about a horse breed (landrace? i imagine its defined as more vaguely than "breed") in Moscah, the Cavran horse! they're from Cavrah and are highly important in the culture. they're also primarily inspired by Mongolian and Yakutian horses! transcript under the cut. ignore any typos i suck at proof reading haha

horses are sacred to all of Cavrah, but especially areas such as Cecily and Ibykos

horses in Cavrah are more or less considered a single breed, but have sub-variations dependent on region (central, northern, etc)

Cavran horses are generally short and stout to fat, with strong bodies and Roman noses. they have long hair and tougher hooves, and those in colder regions grow thick winter coats. any colour/pattern is acceptable, with different groups favouring different ones; however, overall, dun, bay, and black are most popular. primitive striping is common. they're not the fastest, but make up for it in stamina and sure-footedness

different regions have different adaptations; e.g. northern horses have adapted to withstand -70 c weather, while those from the mountains have stronger necks and larger lungs

Tell me what patterns to use lmao

im not an expert in such things but i can give you some info based on what i see commonly.

the chinese hanfu and mongolian deel both are a type of traditional clothing that has intricate patterns on themselves. ranging from clouds, mountains, round patterns, mythical animals such as dragons, phoenix and the 4 mighty (4 хүчтэн) being the more common patterns. while searching for silk to order custom made deel last summer, i realized that round shaped patterns are more common. most of them being round shaped dragon patterns. so maybe those patterns will be easier as they could be copied and pasted across the hanfu.

round patterns like this;

the clpud and mountain or river patterns are more commonly used on the tips of it. on the very edge of the sleeves, at the bottom of the hanfu etc for a more minimalistic design. of course a waterlily is also commonly used too;

phoenix patterns (one big in the middle around the chest or a few spread across) could work but if i remember correctly, historically, the phoenix was more common used pattern for the empresses;
