Asma Barlas on the Qur'an and patriarchy (1/2)

(min. 7:56) "When it comes to qur’anic hermeneutics and method, what is it that you seek to critique and what are the alternative methodologies that you are asking your readers to take?"

"Well, essentially, I’m critiquing dominant interpretations of the Quran that allow Muslims to associate God with women’s abuse and oppression. And of course, most Muslims may not think it’s oppressive to claim that God has made men superior to women and prefers them to women, but I feel that such a view is at best theologically indefensible and at worst sacrilegious since it makes God a partisan in men’s sexism and misogyny.

I also think that such a view is unacceptable from a strictly interpretive and hermeneutical perspective since it arises from focusing selectively on only those six or so verses and partial verses out of a total of 6236 in the Quran that give men and women some different rights and such readings also fail to contextualize these verses or to accept that we can interpret them differently than they have been interpreted in the past.

And what I find ironic is that the same Muslims who insist on the fixity of the Quran’s meanings like to boast that Arabic is so rich that it has 100 words for a camel. They even admit that the Quran has at least two levels of meanings and if they incline to Sufism that each verse has thousands. So only when it comes to men’s rights does Arabic suddenly become plain sense and monosemic and the Quran the only text in the world’s history to have just one fixed and transparent meaning.

So, those are the tendencies I’m critiquing. As far as my own methodology… well, firstly I acknowledge that there is a relationship between meaning and method, so that what we take the Quran – for that matter, any text – to be saying, depends on who reads it, how, and in what sorts of social, political and historical contexts and circumstances.

I also take it as a given that languages and texts are polysemic and that interpretation is “an open process which no single vision can conclude” – that’s from Paul Ricoer. More to the point, I read the Quran in light of its descriptions of God because after all the Quran is God’s word and I feel we ought not to ascribe ideas to it that run counter to its claims about God. So for instance, it says, God is one, God is just, God is incomparable, so I read the Quran in light of these precepts of divine unity, justice and incomparability.

To give just one example, since God is unlike all else in creation and since the Quran forbids using similitude, that is to say comparisons for God, or calling God “father”, I think God to be minimally beyond sex and gender and since God rejects patriarchalization, in other words, God rejects being a patriarch, I take the Quran’s own episteme, and I use the word loosely, to also be anti-patriarchal.

On this note, I’ve applied a comprehensive definition of patriarchy to the Quran which, it appears, no prior reader had done, at most amina wadud had argued in her book that it’s “neutral to social and marital patriarchy” though without clarifying what she meant by the term.

The way I define it (patriarchy) has appeared in two major forms: one is as the historical tradition of rule by the father/husband which in its religious iterations draws on depictions of God as both male and as father; and the other is the more modern politics of sexual differentiation that privileges men and discriminates against women because of their biology. So this half of the definition I borrow from my colleague and friend Zillah Eisenstein.

Lastly I’ve drawn on some criteria the Quran itself suggests like reading it intra-textually, that is as a whole, contextualizing some of its provisions, since it refers to what Kenneth Cragg calls the “necessarily periodic nature of some of its contents”. I privilege it’s foundational aya [verse] and I search for the best in its teachings because these are all things the Quran urges us to do and I know that we may differ on what is best but my own view is that an exegesis which offends against God’s self-disclosure or ignores the Quran’s holism and/or the context of specific verses is contextually a misreading.

So it’s based on this approach that I’ve tried to illustrate that the Quran doesn’t advocate patriarchy and in fact that its foundational teachings incline towards sexual equality and as for the hierarchy verses I argue that these refeel (?) an infinity of traces, I have borrowed the phrase from [Antonio] Gramsci, of the 7th century tribal Arab patriarchy to which God first spoke but which, as we know, has long since passed into history along with its specific forms of male authority and gender hierarchy." question/discussion topic for my black american followers:

have you heard of soulaan as a word to describe us? and if so, what do you think of it?

for those that don't know, soulaan is an endonym (i.e created by us) for our ethnicity that was coined over a year ago. the base 'soul' comes from our culture that includes soul food and soul music, while the ending '-aan' comes from "african american nation". variants include: soulaa and soulaani (both of which can have the double aa or single a)

i thought it was nice but then i saw concerning stuff like this that made me go "yikes":

some of the people that use it are black separatists, use it to fuel diaspora hostility, etc.

it doesn't seem very popular right now outside of like tiktok or pinterest. but it's been gaining popularity throughout 2023.

some people criticize it as not wanting to learn our individual ancestry blends (i.e the ethnic groups we'd get from a dna test)

personally i'd be fine with the term because as i see it, this would make it less controversial both in and out of our identity:

afro-american/black american: anyone of full or partial sub-saharan african ethnic descent who are citizens or permanent residents of the united states. (race + nationality)

soulaa: any black american who's culture and heritage is tied to the united states. (ethnicity)

american descendant of slavery/foundational black american: any soulaani that uses their identity to push a, usually nationalist, separatist, or supremacist political stance. (ethno-political identity)

from my understanding, any polarity in regards to the current terms stem from:

people confusing denonyms, ethnonyms (endonyms and exonyms), and ethnotopynyms with each other

identities and labels are very different between countries + identities that start with afro-/black aren't usually ethnicites outside of the americas

polysemic vs monosemic terms (e.g being "black" can be referring to race or the american ethnicity)

probably some other stuff i forgot to add

also, to me, the word is just cute and fun to say. "sō-lahn" haha 🥰 i think i'll try using the term to see how i like it.

As the Party's texts, cinema is a powerful aesthetic and political instrument for representing the regime.

The cinema of the North Korean dictatorship is part of the regime founded in 1948, part of its aesthetic, cultural and political system, in a word, its spectacle. It is often absent from studies of world cinema, even though the regime and its film-loving dictator Kim Jong-il hold it in high regards.

Propagandistic, North Korean films are nevertheless diversified and subject to change. For example, there was a genre such as melodrama, which was already very popular before the war. On the contrary, it is interesting to note that the comedy genre is not present in North Korean cinema. Seriousness, in these conditions, dominates. On the contrary, comedies are absent from North Korean cinema. However, humour sometimes appears in a naturalistic logic, in the sense that what is instinctive and childish.

As with Stalinist cinema and its Hollywood rival, the aim was to make films that were understood by the peasants and workers, and therefore to make films with simple, monosemic narrative structure and dialogue. Dialogue is the driving force behind the action.

On the Soviet model, North Korean cinema has become state-run, with budgets and content totally under the control of the political leaders. No other production or import of films is allowed except in exceptional cases.

Lexember, but not really 1

I had wanted to sort of participate in Lexember just a month ago, but that clearly didn't happen.  It wouldn't have been brand-new words for me, though; more like just showing off some words in Kilxagyo which I already had.  Specifically, I had wanted to show words which were polysemous, that is, ones with many meanings.  My words tend to be fairly simple and monosemous, so developing any polysemous words at all is pretty good for me.  I even added a few meanings to some of these words and refined the meanings which were already there.  They are presented with a slightly more transcriptional Romanization and in the correct alphabetical order for Kilxagyo.  The actual Kilxagyo script does have some minor historical spellings, too.  Also, the etymologies aren't real etymologies; they're really more to just help me remember how I made those words.  Of course, some things may be subject to change, as I like to tinker with this conlang.  I'll show off the words in a few short posts.  The first two words are "ate" and "ikatla."

ate; /ˈʔa.te/          Etym: related to -ato: behind          1) adj. or adv: worst, most inferior, most inferiorly; generally, the superlative of xul.  ¿In, ate gatin yoŋkol xohán nas, veta ka?  Is this the worst spoon you own?  2) adj. or adv: worst, most inept, most ineptly, most incapable.  Vin ate folxa mendám veta.  He is the worst employee here.  Yoŋ inwega ate makéŋ.  You finished it in the most inept way.  3) adj. or adv: last, final, ultimate, lastly, finally, ultimately (obsolete or archaic).  Ate satsu.  The last book.  See also: ulta.

ikatla; /ʔiˈka.tlə/          1) n: provisions, rations, resources, vittles; food set aside for a specific and possibly future purpose.  ¿Mimul mem ikatla floltutame hava ka?  Do we have enough food for the winter?  2) n: monetary provisions or resources.  3) n: resources in general, including tools and other items.  4) n: goods, wares, merchandise, inventory of vendors.  Ulukil bem vul ikatla hava.  The merchant has a lot of good inventory.  5) n: an arsenal, as of weapons. (Addendum: since Kilxagyo is spoken in a sort of generic game-like fantasy world, and if I choose to have the speakers have that sort of pseudo-steampunk fantasy robotics, then ikatla would also mean a battery.)

Those are it for now.  I have a total of twenty, so the other words will be posted in the subsequent days.

There’s no monosemic term (with exact/specific/only one definition) for being attracted to masculine individuals regardless of their gender. Recently there was coined fe- (fesexual/feromantic) for attraction femininity regardlessly gender identity, there was also mascu (mascuromantic/mascusexual) then someone recoined it as attraction to men.

You may suggest that andro-/masc-/vir-/min- means it, but there are a lot of people also using these terms meaning attraction to men or masculine genders (the same happens with gyne-/gyno-/fem-/fin-/femme-). So I’m gonna ask y’all what you think:

Manu-/Maculi- attraction to masculinity (presentation/expression), regardless of gender identity.

Based on manugender/masculigender. Reminder there are already monosemic terms for attraction to men/women, such as ma(n)-/vir(i)-/mascic & femaric/woma(n)-/femi-.

Androgyne-/androgyno-/androgino-/androgine- are also terms used in many / polysemic ways, to mean attraction to both men and women (as in ambi-); being attracted to androgyne/androgynous people or masculine & feminine individuals. There’s lin but it’s not about androgynous expression only (compared to min-/fin-). So I also coined:

Angi- attraction to androgyny regardless of gender.
