This business-card order isn't like the others
Part of graphic design is taking things away that no longer need to be there.
Once again, I have not lived up to the retail industry’s Black Friday expectations. I didn’t buy any presents for anybody on Friday; all of my gift shopping this morning happened in indie physical stores; and this evening’s two online purchases were both business expenses that were going to happen at some point, with only one spurred by a holiday discount. But the 400 business cards I ordered…

Making of business cards
I looked at different websites to compare prices however moocards had the most straight-forward website interface and was easiest to navigate as well as having the option to print on both sides. This is something i felt was important as i wanted the front of the card to be a miniature print in itself so that people would feel more inclined to pick them up, perhaps even pin them up somewhere.
Moo.com also offers student discount of 15% which made the price more reasonable.

Pantone Colour of the Year Self Portrait - Contest Entry Moo (the printing company I use) are having a contest on instagram to do a self portrait using the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2020 (Classic Blue). This is my entry. It ended up being a bit of a family portrait as well, as this is the time of year I think about and miss my family the most. The holidays are filled with memories and traditions that I no longer get to take part in regularly... but thanks to the wonders of the internet and smartphones, I at least get to see their faces and hear their voices. So here, my self portrait for 2019/2020 - me, getting to talk to my family.

Admittedly, I’m not a marketing whiz. But I do enjoy blending my photographic skills with my also admittedly meager graphic design skills. That being said, I think what works best for designing marketing materials for photographers (in this case a new set of business cards) is simplicity.

Sample card with a Death Valley photo
I was thrilled with the most recent batch of cards I ordered from Moo.com. The card stock was thick and sturdy. They were a little pricier than Vistaprint, but the quality was superior. Now that I’m nearly out of cards, rather than do a simple reorder, I decided to design a whole new set. What I especially love about using MOO is that while I can have one standard front side, I can do fifty different backs, which is perfect for a photographer with an extensive library of images. The hardest part is winnowing it down to fifty. What I’ll probably do this time is place two different orders so I can increase the variety of cards even further. Here’s a handful of other favorites I’m having printed.
For the card design, I use Adobe InDesign, the same software I used to design my book (see below). I also use Adobe’s Lightroom and Photoshop to organize and edit the photographs themselves.
A reminder: my book about the John Muir Trail, “As I Was Walking: Two Summers Exploring and Photographing the John Muir Trail” is on sale through Apple Books.
Here’s a direct link to the Apple Book store: “As I Was Walking”

Hello!! Do you have any plans to sell more of your SVSSS photocards? I'm so late to the party and only saw them now, but it's obviously way past the pre-order date. ;_;
sorry but that project was a limited run!
if you want to make your own photocards though, the printer i used was moo.com and I wrote up a guide on how I priced things out in this post
